The NHL regular season is finally here,
and I'm going to get you guys set for Penguins Rangers right after this.
You're Locked-on Penguins, your daily podcast on the Pittsburgh Penguins,
part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day.
Hello and welcome back to another episode of the Locked-on Penguins podcast.
I am one of your host, Hunter Hodes.
You can follow me on Twitter at Hunslerhodes.
You can follow the show's Twitter account at L.O. Understore Penguins,
and you can follow the show's Instagram account at Lockdown, underscore Penguins.
And of course, thank you also much for making this your first listen slash watch of the day.
We are free and available on all platforms.
If you're watching on YouTube, you're probably noticing that my good friend in Coast,
Patchdamp is not here for today's episode.
No people.
He has not been fired or anything like that.
Pat woke up today very sick.
He looks like he has the flu.
He is not feeling very well how to call off work.
So he is not going to be previewing today's.
matchup against the Rangers. The hope is that he will be back on Wednesday to recap this game
against the Rangers also give out our warrior helmet for this past week. And then we're also going
to move Bull Predictions, hopefully, to that day on Wednesday. We're not going to do Bull predictions
today. I just don't think that would be fair. But that's the latest update on Pat and wanted to get
that housekeeping out of the way. So you guys are stuck with me today for a preview,
previewing, excuse me, this game against the New York Rangers. And I am stoked, guys. We finally made it to the regular season.
no more seven game preseasons where it's just a bunch of meaningless hockey,
even though it was cool seeing a lot of the young players really fight for jobs during the preseason.
Watching seven preseason games, it's tough.
It definitely is just because they don't really mean much.
But again, we finally made to the regular season.
The Penguins will open the 2025, 2025, 26 season tonight inside Madison Square Garden
against Mike Sullivan and the New York Rangers.
We're going to do a full preview of that game a bit later on in the show.
give some keys to victory for this game.
But first, let's go over some of the lines that you are expected to see for tonight
after I was at Monday's practice, starting with Ville Coyvdon, with Sidney Crosby,
and Ricard Rakel, on the top line.
No surprise that Rakel was with Crosby.
They had a lot of chemistry last year.
Raquel was obviously outstanding.
And with Coyvenin, he was attached to Crosby throughout camp and the preseason, so I'm not surprised by this.
I do think you might see Coyvden with Malkin a little bit at times this year.
but I'm not surprised that Coivinen is getting the first reps with say.
Coivnin had a tremendous camp in preseason.
He is more than NH already.
He had seven points and eight games last year.
In terms of expectations for him this year, if you can get him to around, you know,
10 goals, 20 assists for 30 points, even 15 goals, 20 assists for 35 points,
I think that is a win.
Anything more, that's a bonus.
But if you can get him close to half a point per game in his first full NHL season,
that is a major win for me because then you can start expecting,
okay, maybe there's a big jump next year for 26, 27,
and he maybe has 45 to 50 points or something like that.
So I think that will be a big win for the Penguins this year
if he's even close to a half a point per game.
But I'm really excited about him.
And I do think, my opinion, I'll say this right now.
I think he's going to be the Penguins rookie of the year this year.
So I'm going to put that out there.
Hopefully I'm right.
Second line, you have Anthony Mantha with Afghani Malkin and Justin Brzo.
Mantha, he was attached to Malkin throughout the
camp in preseason. And I do think Manta and Malkin could do some damage together.
Last season, obviously Manta, his season was cut short, torn ACL.
But the season before that, he had a 20 plus goal season.
This is very much, I think, the Anthony Bavillier situation from last year where if you can
get some really good value out of him, get him to around, say, 15, 20-ish goals by the trade
deadline, I think you can get a really good return and flip him to a contender.
So I like those two together.
I think he has a good release.
Malkin is still a good playmaker.
I like that.
I know some people are going to be upset about Justin Brazo being on the second line,
but this is to me very much a placeholder until Brian Rust gets back.
They said to end training camp, he was going to be out for a minimum of two weeks.
It doesn't look like he has started skating yet.
I was at the facility on Monday.
He wasn't out there for practice.
I didn't see him out there skating.
But I would at least assume he's going to be back during this nine-game trial run for Ben Kendall.
And once he is, I think he is going to take Brazosos.
spot in the top six, and that allows Brazo to move down the lineup to preferably a fourth
line role, which I think is totally fine for him, by the way. I think some people are sleeping
on him a little bit this year. I'm not expecting him to light the league on fire or anything
like that. He's just a totally fine depth forward. I think he'll give the Penguins double-digit
goals. He's a better version of Achari. I don't think Achari is any good anymore, but I just think
Brazo is a much better version of him. And he'll actually give you offense. He'll be physical
and Achari will be physical as well, but I'm just speaking,
offensively speaking,
Brazil will give you the offense and Achari won't, in my opinion.
So as a fourth line forward,
he's totally fine.
Don't freak out about it.
He's only going to be up there for a few games.
And also people,
Rucker McGority is going to be back at some point this season.
I think he's going to get a conditioning stint in the AHL once he's healthy,
and then I think he's going to come up to the main squad.
But he's also going to probably have a top nine role at some point.
This season, third line.
You have Tommy Novak.
with Ben Kendall and Philip Tomasino.
I like seeing Novak and Tomasino get more time together.
They got a little bit of time together if you combine the 22, 23 season and the 23, 24 season
with the National Predators.
Only six games, 32 minutes of five-on-five ice time.
But in those minutes, albeit a short sample, they played fairly well together.
When they were on the ice together, the Predators had 70% of the shot attempts.
They also had 85% of the expected goals, 80% of the scoring chances, and 90% of the high danger chances.
again, very, very small sample.
But it is at least interesting to see them go back to that.
And I want to see how it does here, at least to start this season,
if they can maybe pick up on that from a few seasons ago.
And then obviously Ben Gindle, congratulations to him, again, for making the team.
He is going to be the third line center.
I think having Novak next to him is a big win.
Novak is someone who is a really good playmaker, also has an underrated release.
I like seeing that skill set next to someone like Kindle who has obviously a very great hockey IQ.
And then Tomasino, someone who I want to see be a bit more consistent this year.
When he's on, he's a really fun player to watch, especially when he is showcasing that nice release.
But inconsistency just really plagued him throughout last season.
So I want to see that change.
And by the way, Harrison Brunick is also set to make his NHD debut tonight.
This is only the third set of teenagers to make their NHO debut.
together in Penguin's history.
The last two to make their debuts together,
got to go back to October 5th, 2006,
Chris LaTang and Jordan Sal.
So 19 years later, we get it with Harrison Brunich
and Ben Kindle.
Congratulations to them.
Damn you is announced on Monday.
They will both be in the lineup.
And then for the fourth line for this game,
Connor Dewer with Blake Lazant and Noel Chari.
Dewar in LaZot, I'm totally fine with.
I know some people are going to be upset that Hollander is not the lineup.
I don't think that's going to be for very long.
I think he is going to be in and out of the lineup all year.
I don't think Achari has his lineup or his spot in the lineup,
but excuse me, set in stone.
I think you'll see him or one of the other players on the fourth line coming in and out
of lineup throughout the year for Hollander.
They're going to want to get a good look at Hollander throughout the season.
So even though it looks like he might be scratched in this game,
it's not the end of the world, people.
It's fine.
And by the way, people, I don't think Achari is going to be on this team for the full
season unless they do what they did with Grizzlik last year.
but I do think there will be at least a team or two to come calling around the trade done line.
Pending UFA, you're going to want to get what you can for him around that time.
Defensively, Parker Weatherispoon with Eric Carlson, no surprise there.
They kind of have no choice but to put Weatherspoon on the top pairing.
On a contender, he's a third pairing defenseman, but Penguins aren't trying to contend this year,
and he's their best option on the left side.
Carlson, I want to see him take the top pair of minutes this year.
No surprise that he's up there.
With Chris Let's hang on the second peer, they have Ryan Shea.
not what I would have done, but I'm also not going to overreact to it.
We're not sure how long this is going to be.
But again, I don't want to overreact to a lot of lines and pairings this year just because
this team is not expected to be very good.
Again, I would not have Ryan Shea with Crystal Tang.
I think that's a recipe for disaster, just like Caleb Jones with Crystal Tang would be.
But again, hopefully we're able to see Owen Pickering come up at some point during this season
and take that spot from Ryan Shea because I really want to see him solidify
himself as a future staple for this team.
On the bottom pair, you have Caleb Jones with Harrison Brunick, Clifton, and Dumbah,
we're rotating.
So it does appear that Connor Clifton and Matt Dumbah are going to be healthy scratches,
at least going off the practice lines from Monday.
Don't expect that to be the case throughout the season.
You're going to see a lot of these defensemen rotate in and out of the line.
You're not going to see Weather Spoon, Carlson, Letang, rotate out.
But I think everyone else, you know, Ryan, Shay, Caleb Jones, even Harrison Brunick,
Clifton Dumbah. A lot of these guys are going to rotate in and out of the lineup,
especially because they want to showcase Clifton and Dumba.
So don't get married to the last two pairings.
I think you can get married to the Wetherstone-Carlson one,
but for the other two pairings, don't get married to them.
We all know what Tang is going to be on the second pair,
but don't get married to Ryan Shea as partner.
That's a look at some of the lines that you're expected to see for this game on Tuesday.
Let me know what you think about those lines.
Down the comments, you can send me a DM.
as well. But I think that's going to do it for this first segment of today's episode.
Coming up in the second segment, it's time to preview this game against the Rangers
and what I think about this Rangers team heading into the season. Again, that's coming up
right after this. Before we get to that, though, we have to tell you all about our first sponsor,
and that is Fandall. The NFL season is finally here, and Fandall has an offer you do not want to
miss. Right now, new customers can bet just $5 and get $300 in bonus bets if you win.
That's right. Pick a bet.
down five bucks and if it hits, you will unlock $300 in bonus bets to use across the app.
I love how Fandl gives me so many ways to play.
I built parlayes, try player props, and even follow the live lines during games.
It makes watching football even more exciting when you've got a little something riding
on the action.
Whether you are a casual fan or love diving into the stats, Fandall makes the game day experience
so much better.
So what are you waiting for?
Visit fandole.com to download the Fandle app today and get started.
All right, we're back here on this episode of the Locked-on Penguins podcast.
I'm one of your host, Hunter Hodes.
Usually I would say I'm joined by Patrick Gamp here, but again, people, he is sick today.
So he'll hopefully be back tomorrow.
And actually, this is some very fascinating news.
As I'm checking Twitter after the ad read, it looks like Archer Shilov is the first goalie off
the ice.
So it looks like Archer Shilov is going to get the start tonight for the Penguins.
Did not expect that.
I thought it was going to be Tristan Jari, but this is a,
fairly big opportunity here for Sheelovs.
Was the second best goalie during camp.
Looks like during that final preseason game,
Dan Mews may not have been too happy with the way Tristan Jarii played in the first half.
So they're rewarding Archielloves for the camp in the preseason that he had.
And it looks like he is going to get the start tonight.
So as for this Rangers team,
this is a very fascinating season for them.
They hired Mike Sullivan away from the Penguins.
He was out of the job for basically less,
than a week before they hired him and they're trying to return to the playoffs after
missing the playoffs this past season.
But I look up and down at this Rangers lineup.
They have some good pieces, but to me, their defensive group is not very good.
I think that's a place that the Penguins can definitely exploit tonight and their bottom
six is not very good.
So their top line, you have our Tommy Panarin with Vince Trochik and Alexei Lafranier.
Their top center man is Vince Trochek.
Like, I just, I can't take them seriously as a Stanley Cup contender when their top
center is Vince Troche. Second line, you have Will Cooley, who I do like a lot going into this year.
I think he's going to have a good year for them with J.T. Miller, who has just been named their captain
and Mika Zabenejad. Third line, former penguin Connor Sherry, who was on a PTO. He signed a contract
with them. You have Noah Labba and Taylor Radish. Labba is an interesting player.
I've seen a lot of Rangers fans really like him throughout camp and preseason. I don't know too much about
him, but they're saying he's having a good camp in preseason. So we'll have to see. And then you have
Edstrom with Kierkin Matt Rempay on the fourth line.
Again, that bottom six still, it just leaves a lot to be desired.
I think that's also a place where the penguins can exploit the Rangers tonight.
It's funny, I'm not expecting a lot of big things from the Penguins this year.
I'm not expecting them to make the playoffs.
I still think they have a better bottom six than the Rangers do going into the season,
which is kind of crazy.
And then defensively, Adam Fox is still one of the five best defensemen on the planet.
I like that they sign Gavricov.
I think that's the best player that he's going to have.
paired with throughout his career.
Outside of that, though, that defensive group is not very good.
You have Carson Sousy with Will Borgian as your second pair.
Doesn't really do it for me.
You got Schneider and Vakinen on the third pair.
It doesn't really do it for me.
And then obviously, I think you have the best goaltender on the planet in Igor Shusirkin,
but I just think there's a lot of holes in this Rangers lineup.
I think the Penguins can definitely exploit their bottom six.
They can exploit the Rangers defensively.
I don't think they're very fast on the back end.
I think that the penguins can really bring out an aggressive forecheck tonight.
I think you can really see them just get under the Rangers skin a little bit just because, again,
I don't think the Rangers are that fast on the back end.
And I also want to see if the Penguins can take advantage of some overly aggressive pinching from the Rangers.
That was a little bit of a staple during the end of Mike Sullivan, senior, especially in Pittsburgh.
I want to see, does that carry over here to the Rangers?
If it does, I think you could see some good on-man rush opportunities from the Penguins tonight
because we obviously saw a lot of that last season when Sullivan was the head coach of the Penguins
where some players would be too aggressive, pinched when it wasn't needed.
It's an all-man rush going the other way turns into a goal.
Can that happen tonight for the Penguins?
That's something that I'm going to be keeping an eye on in this one.
Also, again, special teams.
Throughout Cam and preseason for the Penguins par play,
I've noticed that there's been a lot more movement.
It's not just players, you know, staying in one place.
And last year there was more movement too.
It was one of the reasons why they had one of the best power plays in the league.
But it feels like this year's movement compared to last year's movement,
it's on steroids, which again is saying something because there was some movement last year.
But I've seen, you know, Sydney Crosby on the half wall.
I've seen them getting Malkin move down with the goal line.
You're seeing Eric Carlson move around, not just sitting up at the point.
As the quarterback, you're seeing Chris Lange move around.
Ricard Raquel.
he's been in that T.J. Oshy spot, aka the bumper spot,
but I've still seen him move around a little bit as well.
There's been more of an emphasis on multiple net front presences,
at least during camp in the preseason.
So I'm really excited to see this power play in action tonight.
And also for the penalty kill,
it's been more aggressive throughout camp and preseason.
I want that to carry over,
especially because these last couple of years,
Mike Volucci's unit just wasn't aggressive to me.
Way too passive.
You had players sitting back.
kind of just waiting for the game to come to them.
But with DMUs, you have one player pushing up pretty high.
You have the other three players back a little bit,
taking away the high danger areas.
And again, it looks like the same penalty kill that you saw with the Rangers
when he was an assistant coach for the last couple of years.
So I'm excited to see that in action tonight as well.
But again, this is a matchup that I think the Penguins can win.
I am not high on the Rangers this year.
I made my Metropolitan Division predictions for the hockey news this morning.
You can go check them out after this.
I have the Rangers finishing fifth in the Metro.
I do not have them making the playoffs.
I could definitely see a world where they get in, but there's still just too many question
marks.
I don't like their bottom six.
Outside of Gavarkov and Fox, I don't think they're good defensively.
They have the best goaltender on the planet.
But how much more are you going to get out of some players in the top six?
Is J.T. Miller going to have a really good season for you?
Are you going to get a lot out of Mika Zabinajad, who,
I'm still not very high on that.
They're trying him at Wing, but I'm still not that high on them.
You know, how much more can you get out of Artemi Penner?
He was going into the final year of his contract.
Can you get a better year out of Alexei Lafranier?
So there's just a lot of question marks,
and I just don't think it's enough for Mike Sullivan to fully fix in his first season as head coach.
Again, I think this is a team that can be had tonight.
I think if you can force the Rangers to really defend in their own zone,
just because a lot of their defensemen aren't that mobile outside of Gavakov and Fox,
I think the Penguins can really piss them off, especially with their forecheck and really get a lot of chances.
Also, you got to make sure you're getting a lot of traffic in varnish of Sorkin.
Get in his kitchen really pissed this guy off because when you get him pissed off, he gets off his game a little bit.
So I want to see maybe a dirty goal or two tonight.
That's another key to victory for me.
And then, again, special teams really want to see the power play, the movement on it.
And then for the penalty kill, again, want to see that.
that aggressiveness on the penalty kill tonight for the penguins.
But that's my preview, my keys to victory for the penguins tonight over the New York Rangers,
and that's going to do it for this second segment.
Coming up to end the show, we're going to get into more of my pure NHL predictions for
this year, who I have getting to the Stanley Cup final.
I got that right last year, by the way, so we're going to see if I can get that right
again this year, who I have leading the penguins in points, a couple more things.
So stick around.
That's coming up right after this.
All right. Before we get to that, though, we have to tell you all about our second sponsor, and that is Indeed.

All right.
I'm back here on this episode of the Lockdown Penguins podcast.
I'm your host today, Hunter Hode.
You can follow me on Twitter at Hunter Hote.
So let's get into a few.
NHL predictions for this year.
We're not going to get into bowl predictions.
I'm going to save that for Pat,
but I'm going to get into some league-wide predictions for this final segment.
So I did get the Stanley Cup final prediction right last year.
I had the Oilers playing the Panthers yet again.
So we'll see if I can go two for two this year.
I'm not going to pick that this year.
I think with the Panthers,
they're going to get to the playoffs.
That's just, I think if you're not picking the Panthers to make the playoffs,
I think you're insane.
They're going to get Kachuk back.
even without Barkoff for the entire regular season,
I am not betting against the Pandora's getting at the playoffs.
But assuming they don't have Barkaw for the playoffs,
and I'm under the assumption that they won't,
he's the straw that stirs the drink for that team.
He takes all their hard matchups.
He's the best defensive forward in the league.
He brings all the offense.
Without him in the lineup,
other teams can take advantage of that.
And that's why I have the Tampa Bay Lightning
coming out of the Eastern Conference this year,
especially with no Barkoff in the playoffs,
that's the assumption I'm going under.
I think the lightning will be able to get past the Panthers,
and I think they will be able to get out of the east.
The East is still not very good.
It's funny.
I actually have the same eight teams from the conference last year,
making it this year.
I know that sounds weird.
I just don't trust a lot of these other teams.
I was close to picking Columbus to get in,
but I think there's going to come up just short.
I want to take the Rangers,
but again, I just think there's too many holes in that lineup,
and I think Igor Shasturkin is going to have to do.
too much to get that team over the hump, even with Mike Sullivan now as the head of coach.
He's an upgrade over Peter Wavillette, but I still think it's a big ass for him in year
one with all those holes, excuse me, in the lineup.
But, you know, I have the same three coming out of the metro.
I have Carolina winning it, New Jersey, two, Washington three.
And then from the Atlantic, you know, I have Toronto coming out of there.
They're going to take a little bit of a step back, but I have them making it.
I have the two Florida teams, Tampa and Florida getting in.
I also have Ottawa and I do have Montreal getting in.
So I have the same eight teams again,
the Eastern Conference going into this year once again.
It's still not very good.
And I think the Metropolitan Division especially is trash.
So I'm going to take Tampa Bay coming out of the east from the west.
I am going to go with the Vegas Golden Knights.
I think even without Patrangelo for the entire season,
I think this is the best team on paper.
And you also know that they're probably going to get another defense around the trade deadline.
they are never, you know, satisfied.
They always want to go out there, make the big moves.
They have an owner that likes being aggressive.
They have a really good front office.
I see them making another move.
And now that they have that full cap relief for the year,
does that open up a possibility for an Eric Carlson trade with some retention?
Just put that out there for everyone.
Just put that out there.
So I have Vegas getting there.
I love the Mitch Marner move.
They still have a really deep forward group.
I'm excited to see what Shay Theodore can do as the bona fide number one to
defensemen there, and I think their goal tending is totally fine.
And the way they play defensively in their own zone under Bruce Cassidy,
Chef's Kiss.
So I have Vegas coming out of the West, and I do have Vegas winning the Stanley Cup this year.
Again, I think this is the best team in the league, and I think they are going to win the
cup this year.
That is my Stanley Cup final prediction.
Now, as for some penguin predictions, who gets the most points for the penguins,
I'm going to go Cindy Crosby, 95 points.
I'm not going to take him to go under 90 points in this.
season until he actually does it.
You know, three straight seasons here in his mid to late 30s where he's been over 90 points.
I'm going to say he does it again this year.
95 points.
Rookie of the year, kind of discussed that.
I'm going to go Ville Coyvenin for the Penguins rookie of the year.
I think he gets close to a half point per game.
I think he is really good for them this year.
And then breakout player, I'm going to go Tommy Novak.
That might be a hot take to some, but I really like what he can bring to this lineup.
He's a really good playmaker, has good vision on the ice,
likes using his underrated release.
He's a good skater.
I think they can play him up and down the line.
He's kind of like a Swiss Army knife.
You can put him on your wing on the third line.
You can put him as your third line center.
You can put him on the second line next to Hvgeny Malkin.
I want to see that happen at some point this season
and let them get a little bit runway,
just because, you know,
you've seen Malkin kind of want to play with Novak at times
during camp and preseason.
I want to see it during the regular season.
And I think that's kind of,
kind of it in terms of some pure penguins predictions. In terms of if you want to ask,
you know, who gets the bulk of this starts, I'm going to go jari by a hair. I know
She-laws is getting to start tonight. I'm still going to go jari by a hair. I think it's going to
be really close, though. I think this might end up being a 1A, 1B situation. Could be dead wrong
on this, and I'll take the L if I am, but that's what I have right now. And just to close this up,
Again, this is the most intrigued I've been about a season in quite some time.
You have a brand new coaching staff in place with fresh new ideas.
The team doesn't feel like it's stale anymore.
You still have a fairly good forward group.
You have legit young players getting chances right out of the gate in the
equivalent in Ben Kendall and Harrison Brunich.
Phil Ponder is going to get some chances at some point.
You're going to have other young players get chances during the year.
I expect Avery Hayes up at some point.
I expect Tristan Brose at some point.
I'm hoping Owen Pickering comes up at some point.
Hell, you might even see Sergei Miroshaff at some point later on this season,
even though, again, I want him to get a full season in Wilkesbury,
but say Tristan Jari stinks it up, which is a distinct possibility.
You can see Miroshov up here.
But you have legit young players getting an opportunity.
You still have the core three here in Crosby,
Malk and Littang doing their thing.
And I think you're going to see a better season from Eric Carlson as well.
He had a really good camp, really good preseason.
He's going to take the top pairing minutes.
I'm really excited to see what he can do under a new coaching staff.
Again, I don't expect this team to be very good,
but I expect them to be a lot more fun to watch than they have been,
especially these last couple of years.
And I think you're going to see a lot of fight and a lot of effort
and a lot of compete in this team.
So that's what I'll leave off with today's episode.
But we've made it, guys.
The regular season is here.
Penguins Rangers tonight inside Madison Square Garden.
The Penguins will play the Islanders a bit later this week.
And then they will host the Rangers this weekend.
Mike Sullivan's return to PBGP paints arena.
But it all gets underway tonight inside MSG.
Really excited for another season with you guys here.
Thank you guys, as always, so much for taking the time to listen to slash watch this one.
Pat, hopefully we'll be back with another episode with me on Wednesday.
If not, I'll be delivering the recap for you guys on Wednesday.
and then hopefully Pat will be back maybe a bit later on this week.
But again, the goal is to have them back on Wednesday for the recap,
Warrior Helmet, and then giving our very bold predictions for this year.
So for myself, thank you so much for taking the time to listen to slash watch this one.
And what another episode for you guys on Wednesday?
Enjoy the game tonight.
