Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins - Egor Chinakhov has the makings of a STAR with the Penguins!

Episode Date: May 22, 2026

At the time, the price to acquire Egor Chinakhov seemed steep, but after half a season in Pittsburgh, it looks like a steal. Patrick Damp is flying solo today on the Friday edition of Locked On Pengui...ns, and it begins with continuing the season in review series, looking at forward Egor Chinakhov. In 43 games with Pittsburgh, Chinakhov looked like a star, scoring 18 goals and 36 points. Along with the offense, Chinakhov showed he can be a reliable player in all three zones. Going into next season, the priority should be getting him more power-play time. (0:00) Then, the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins were unable to close out their series against Springfield, getting shut out 2-0. While the team did have a disallowed goal go against them, their response left much to be desired. Then, the Wheeling Nailers open their series against the Florida Everblades in the Eastern Conference Finals. (12:17) Finally, it's an AMA version of Fan Take Friday! Patrick takes your questions on theme nights, similarities between the Penguins and Steelers, and a truly wild trade proposal. Starting point is 00:00:00 When the Penguins acquired Igor Chinikov right before the new year, it seemed like a bit of a steep price to pay for a player who just needed a change of scenery, but after more than a half of a season with the Penguins, he looks like he could be a star in the making. Let's talk about it and that Dubus Masterclass on the Friday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast. Your Locked-on Penguins, your daily podcast on the Pittsburgh Penguins, Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Welcome in to the Friday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast.
Starting point is 00:00:43 I am your host, Patrick Damp. You can follow me across all social media platforms at Synonym 4 Wet, flying solo today because Hunter Hodes is on a mini vacation this weekend. And before I jump in, today's episode is brought to you by Fandul. Right now, new customers can bet just five. $150 in bonus bets if your first bet wins. Head to fandul.com to get started. We will have more on them later.
Starting point is 00:01:13 All right, we have got plenty to get to today for the Friday edition of Locked-on Penguins. The baby penguins are going to have to play a winner take-all game five after dropping game four to Springfield two to nothing. We got plenty of questions about the offseason in another fan take Friday. But before we get into all of that, the season and review series continues today. And we are going to talk about Igor Chinikov, a guy who really this season emerged as a potential long-term piece. And yes, I set it in the cold open and I stand by it. He does feel like a star in the making for these Pittsburgh Penguins.
Starting point is 00:01:58 If you don't recall, Chinikov was acquired from the Columbus Blue Jackets in a trade on December 29th. The Penguins sent Danton Hinen, a 2026 second round pick and a 27 third round pick to the Blue Jackets for Chinikov. And at the time, if you recall, both Hunter and I weren't upset that the Penguins acquired Chinikov. we didn't exactly love the price because you see where the penguins are as an organization. They need as much capital as they can get as they try to walk this high wire of a retool on the fly in getting themselves back to contention. But that means you need your prospects, you need your picks, you need your picks, you need those depth guys that you can flip.
Starting point is 00:02:50 And that's what Danton Heinen turned into because before Igor Chinok became a penguin. His results in Columbus were nothing short of disappointing. 204 games played in total, 37 goals, 40 assists, 77 points. And on top of all of that, with the blue jackets, he was frequently injured, he was a scratch, or he was buried down on the fourth line, taking away a ton of opportunities for him. So it really was a classic change of scenery guy, but you look at the numbers, 200 games is not a small sample size. This wasn't a player in his second or third year who was not getting a chance, but you saw the flashes.
Starting point is 00:03:41 That said, it was a little bit that, but he was getting dangerously close to bust territory with the blue jackets. But now with the benefit of hindsight and looking back at his time in Columbus, I think a lot of it really was more of the fact that Columbus did not have any patience with him. He really didn't get the opportunities to really work through some of his slumps, to work through some of his issues. It seemed like the leash could not have been shorter. Any mistake or underperformance put him on the fourth line, put him in the press box. There was also a bunch of injuries. So Columbus and Chinikov's patience both wore out by the end of his time with Columbus. They make the trade.
Starting point is 00:04:28 And what do you know? He comes to Pittsburgh and he is a brand new player. 43 games in the regular season for the Penguins, 18 goals, 18 assists, 36 points, nearly half of his entire output in Columbus in 161 fewer games. So he really found his spot and his mojo in Pittsburgh with the penguins. And when you dig deeper into his metrics, you kind of get the same story that he really figured it out here in Pittsburgh. According to Natural Static, played a little bit over 558 minutes at even strength,
Starting point is 00:05:10 slightly underwater for shot attempts at 49% well above water, an expected goals percentage at 60%, a plus nine for goals at five on five. And along with being a really good driver of offense with a great shot, he also showed he is reliable in all three zones. Now, that was a little bit of a concern prior to his acquisition. You heard a lot of that talk out of Columbus that he wasn't a 200-foot player. he was mostly a one-trick pony, great shot, offensive player, doesn't bring much else to the table. That gets flipped when he comes to Pittsburgh.
Starting point is 00:05:53 Now, nobody is going to mistake him for a Selkie candidate. He's not going to be a defensive forward that you're putting out in six-on-five situations or on the penalty kill or anything like that. But he's not going to be the type of player that you've got to shelter, you've got to hide them, you can't rely on him in high-leverage. moments. He showed that he can play basically all three zones reliably, and he is pretty damn good offensively, where only two of his 18 goals this season with the penguins were with the man advantage. And that is where I want to take this discussion next. For Dan Mews in the
Starting point is 00:06:36 coaching staff next year, a huge priority has to be getting Igor Chinikov more time on the power play between his shot, his speed. He is a natural asset to really boost this team's power play. Obviously, we know the Penguins power play for the majority of the regular season was pretty good. In total, after 82 games, they finished seventh in the league in power play percentage. But as we know, that doesn't tell the whole story. The Penguins power play down the stretch, the last month or so of the season really hit a slump, started to slide, lost some of its mojo and its advantage. And the same thing can be said for the first round series against the Philadelphia Flyers.
Starting point is 00:07:26 They had several opportunities in high leverage moments to take full advantage of a game with the power play and they let that go by the wayside. So you didn't see a lot of Igor Chinikov on the, the top unit. And while I understand the rationale from Dan Mews, you look at the players on that top unit, Sidney Crosby, Eric Carlson, Brian Rust, and Ricard Raquel, that is a pretty murderer's row of offensively talented players who bring a lot to the, a lot to the table for your man advantage. But realistically, putting Igor Chinikov shot on the wall for the the power play just seems like a no-brainer to me. The velocity behind that shot, the ability to
Starting point is 00:08:18 fit it into tight windows, to take advantage of screens in front, which you know a player like Brian Rust is going to bring to the table every night. There is a real opportunity for both the Penguins and Igor Chinikov to take the next step by putting him on the top power play unit. And if I'm Dan Muse, Nick Benino, and the rest of the coaching staff going into 26, 27, once you get him re-signed, the top priority for him has to be getting him more power play opportunities because he will be able to bring that shot to the top power play and make that unit even more deadly than it was for the majority of this season. So overall, a fantastic run for Igor Chinikov with the Penguins. He plays 43 games.
Starting point is 00:09:15 He puts up 36 points. He seems like a natural fit on the second line with Ebgeny Malkin, brings the offense, plays well in all three zones. And the acquisition at the time, while it seemed pricey, now it seems like an absolute steel when you consider that Columbus in Pittsburgh are very much in similar situations right now where they are fringe playoff teams, not quite contenders,
Starting point is 00:09:44 but now the penguins have a serious building block for their future in Igor Chinikov. In Columbus, sure looks like they could use a guy who can score you that many goals throughout the course of an entire season. So much like it has been for this entire season in review series,
Starting point is 00:10:05 up to this point. Igor Chinikov gets an A from me, a great season for him. I think a bridge contract is coming up for him this summer, two or three years. They're going to see what they have in him. If he can continue this level of production, they can revisit it in a couple of years and get him locked up for the long term with the penguins. But overall, I will continue to keep my flag in the ground when it comes to Igor Chinikov and say that it doesn't. does look like the penguins, for now, he obviously has to build on it, have a star in the making in Igor Chinikov. That is going to do it for this opening segment. When I come back, baby penguins had a chance to close out their series against the Springfield Thunderbirds,
Starting point is 00:10:54 but we're unable to punch their ticket to the Eastern Conference final of the Calder Cup playoffs. We will talk about that game as well as get you set for game one of nailers everblades tonight so stick with us we're coming back right after this but first we've got to tell you about our sponsor and that is fan duel the NBA and stanley cup playoffs are here and in full swing where every possession matters if you're looking to get even closer to the action fan duel has a great offer for you to get started right now new customers can bet just five dollars and get 150 in bonus bets if that first bet wins. Just head to Locked-on Podcasts.com slash Everydayer Club to learn more. Wilkesbury Scranton Penguins will have to play a winner take all game five on Saturday night against Springfield in Wilkesbury. Now, before I get to the game itself, this might be bringing a bit of the, for my WWE fans out there, a Danhausen curse on the baby penguins.
Starting point is 00:13:17 But with the Western Conference final in the Calder Cup playoffs set between the Chicago Wolves and the Colorado Eagles, the baby penguins are now the top remaining seed in the Calder Cup playoffs. Should they take care of business tomorrow night, they will have home ice advantage throughout the remainder of their run. And I got to give a shout out to Tony Androquatus of Inside AHL hockey for that catch. He is a great follow on Twitter. His work on Inside AHL hockey is fantastic. If you're like me and you don't have the subscription for Flow hockey and A HL TV. He is a great resource for everything,
Starting point is 00:14:01 AHL, worth your time, worth your money. Definitely someone you should check out. Now, let's get to the game. A 2-0 loss for the Wilkesbury Scranton Penguins and Baby Penguins head coach Kirk MacDonald. He didn't pull any punches after the game, saying, quote, that was the worst game they have played since January, end quote. and it's really hard to disagree with that assessment from McDonald. Now, of course, we got to talk about the big story out of the game, which was the disallowed goal for the baby penguins in the first period. Avery Hayes, Rutger McGority, Harrison Brunich, and Gabe Closson,
Starting point is 00:14:46 they teamed up for a gorgeous tick-tac-toe goal. Brunick appears to finish it off, but it ends up being overturned for goaltender interference. Watching this back, I really think that the Springfield goaltender Romanov, he went down pretty darn easy on this one, taken Claussen down, or Claussen, excuse me, down with him. And in my opinion, after I talked to a few people who watch the AHL a lot closer than I, do. Romanov has been kind of doing this a lot, both in this series and overall. And this
Starting point is 00:15:31 disallowed goal was another example of that. No doubt in my mind here that the baby penguins got screwed. It was not a great call. It was not a good thing to overturn this goal. It should have counted. It should have been either coincidental or incidental contact, however you want to describe it. It wasn't the cleanest goaltender interference call. And obviously, it's the HL. It's not the NHL. You don't have the whole war room and a hundred different cameras and everything else in place. But at the end of the day, it was not a great call.
Starting point is 00:16:10 However, this is where the learning moments for some of these young players in the penguin system has to come into play. after the call, the baby penguins pretty much let frustration get the best of them. Obviously, you lose two nothing. They were not able to score the rest of the game. And on top of that, they get out shot 19 to 13 in the final two periods. Hunter and I have talked about it on the show. To make a big club to affiliate club comparison, this series against Springfield is a lot like the penguins against the senators in 2017.
Starting point is 00:16:56 This is a team that leans on defensive structure. They lean on having a really good goaltender. And you have to stay patient against this team. They're not going to give you a ton of opportunities. You're not going to get your A plus opportunities. And I understand the frustration. You go back, especially to Tony Androquatus's feet. who had several angles of the disallowed goal.
Starting point is 00:17:23 This was Harlem Globetrotters style hockey from the baby penguins. They were snapping the puck around. They were really making it look easy. And then it leads to that disallowed goal. I understand their frustration. I get why they're upset. I get why this was a tough one to come back from because you finally get that A plus plus chance.
Starting point is 00:17:47 It looks so pretty. It's you guys stick into the system, but they kind of went into a shell and played frustrated the rest of the way. And you could see that in the way they played the game. Along with that, their PK only goes one for two. Their power play, O for two. And both of their biggest power play opportunities came when the game was still scoreless. So there were plenty of opportunities in the second period for the baby penguin to take the lead and close this series out, and they weren't able to.
Starting point is 00:18:23 So again, this is a big learning opportunity for some of these younger players in the penguin's system. As McDonald said, it was probably their worst game since January, and pretty much in that time, they have played really, really well. They have been one of the better teams in the HL. They have been getting contributions from just about everybody. And now you got a little bit of adversity. You're going back to Wilkes Bear. You've got a winner take all game five at home with a chance to advance to the final four to the Eastern Conference final where it's going to be the winner of the Cleveland Monsters, who are the Blue Jackets, AHL affiliate, if I am not mistaken. And the Toronto Marleys who I think you know what team they are the AHL affiliate of.
Starting point is 00:19:16 So it's a huge opportunity for them on Saturday night when they head back to Wokes Bear for this game five. And you know Hunter and I probably more me because Hunter's off having fun at a wedding. I don't expect him to follow HL hockey while he's celebrating a wedding. But we will keep an eye on that game and we will have your recap on our Monday episode. So make sure you're subscribed. Make sure you're following us everywhere. we will have that update for you on Monday when the penguins take on the Thunderbirds on Saturday night in the winner take all game five. Meanwhile, another look at the other team for the Penguins organization,
Starting point is 00:19:59 and that is the Wheeling Nailers. The best in the north takes on the best in the south, starting tonight in Estero, Florida at 7.30 when the Nailers will take on the Everblades in the Eastern Conference final of the Kelly Cup playoffs. Now, the key matchup in this game and this series for me is the Nailers team offense against Florida's team defense. Nailers, they finished top 10 in goals in the league this year with 231, while the Everblades gave up the fewest goals in the ECHL this season at 142. along with that the Everblades also have a top three penalty kill.
Starting point is 00:20:43 They had a top three penalty kill, I should say, in the regular season at 87.7%. And to make this series even more fun, it'll be a battle of goaltending. Taylor Godier, who we have talked about endlessly on this show, has been huge for the nailers in this run. And then on the other end of the ice, Cam Johnson for the Everblades, eight wins in a one. point three four goals against average in these playoffs. So it is two very gifted teams with two very gifted goaltenders in the net. So this is going to be a very fun war of attrition for both teams. Typical playoff kind of match up. The team that can get the better goal tending and get advantage on special teams, they will be the team that can stamp their ticket to the Kelly Cup final. It would be
Starting point is 00:21:36 the first time since 2016 that the nailers can find their way to the Kelly Cup finals, as that organization is still looking for a Kelly Cup championship. It all gets going tonight, as I said, at 730. Game two will be Saturday night at 730 in Florida, and because it is the ECHL with the 232 format, the teams will come back to wheeling for games three and four on Wednesday and Friday. both of those games are at 7.10 p.m. If necessary, game 5 is next Saturday in Wheeling at 710.
Starting point is 00:22:14 Should games 6 or 7 be necessary, they will be back in Florida on Monday, June 1st, and Wednesday, June 3rd, both games at 730 at Hertz Arena in Florida. But that is going to do it for this middle segment. When we come back, it's a Friday. it's fan take Friday and I asked you guys to get a little bit creative with your questions. There are a couple really funny ones and a lot about the off season. We will get to all of those questions when we come back right after this. But we've got one more sponsor to get to and that is five hour energy.
Starting point is 00:22:58 If you've got a sweet tooth like I do, you know how tough it is to find that perfect treat without all of the sugar. That is why the fruity rainbow five hour energy shot brings that nostalgic flavor back in a whole new way. Starting point is 00:23:51 Closing out the Friday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast. This is Patrick Damp, fly-in solo as Hunter Hodes, as I have said, is at a wedding this weekend. He's on the road traveling. So I'm here by myself. So with that in mind, it's a Friday. You guys know what that means. It's Fan Take Friday.
Starting point is 00:24:12 And I put the call out for a Fan Take Friday AMA. And as always, you guys delivered. And also shout out, you follow the directions. Kept it in good taste, nothing crazy, just some silly fun. And we got some really fun ones to get to starting with this one from Steve on Blue Sky. He asks in a recent Penguin survey, They asked about interest in various theme nights, including Shrek and Twilight. What character would you dress as for these theoretical theme nights?
Starting point is 00:24:46 Well, I've never seen Twilight. I've never read the books. So I don't know what I would dress as, maybe a werewolf or something. If I got the theme of that book right, but I don't know on that one on Shrek. Come on. If you guys been listening to this pod long enough, you know how much I get ribbed for being short. Lord Farkwad is right there. You know I'd show up to PPG as Lord Farkwad in the Shrek theme night.
Starting point is 00:25:12 It's just too obvious. It's right there on a T. So of course, that would be my answer for a Shrek themed night. From my good friend, C-Fax on Blue Sky, this one gave me a good chuckle. He says and asks, as a general principle, asking for a friend, is it considered a success when a Pittsburgh team drags an aging roster? into the playoffs, even if they don't advance immediately after firing their long time championship winning years ago, but struggling lately head coach named Mike.
Starting point is 00:25:46 Yeah, yeah, I mean, it's hard to say that this past season for the Penguins was anything but a success. We all were talking about them being in the Gavin McKenna sweepstakes. They decide to go off and have a great season, make the playoffs, and unfortunately, disappoint us by not making the second round, which, if you understand the question, that sounds an awful lot like the team on the North Shore at Accroshire Stadium or Heinz Field. And yeah, it's like these two teams like to put a fun house mirror up to one another and just laugh at the results.
Starting point is 00:26:26 But I will say, I do think both organizations are actually in a solid spot, all things considered. I know that Chris Carter over on Locked on Steelers, good pal of mine, does a great job on that show. He, along with so many of the guests that go on that show, have been beating the drum that everybody's frustrated about not getting the quarterback, but you look around the rest of the roster and they're rebuilding everything else. They want the quarterback to be the last guy, not the first guy, which is something that a lot of NFL teams run into. As for the Penguins, I it's nowhere near mission accomplished obviously they made it to the first round and didn't get any further their first round pick is going to be in the 20s so that kind of puts things behind the eight ball
Starting point is 00:27:14 but you look at what the penguins are trying to do and if they're able to pull this off I do think it is going to change the way a lot of teams look at rebuilding and retooling after they're after they go on successful runs whether it's championship or if it's just teams that are really good and among contenders for a long time, because we've often thought that the best way to do it is to tear everything down to the studs, start over and tank as much as you can. The Penguins and Kyle Dubis are doing a good job of giving themselves multiple options. They can build through the draft with a bevy of draft picks.
Starting point is 00:27:56 They've got all kinds of cap space. while they're probably not going to be able to build through free agency because a lot of players don't make it to unrestricted free agency, they will be able to swing some trades because teams will be up against the cap. Teams are going to start their rebuilds. They're going to have opportunities to swing some big deals because they've collected a lot of assets. So while the job is nowhere near finished,
Starting point is 00:28:21 they're in a good spot where they can go a couple of different directions and they're not going to have very many bad contracts on the books that they're not going to be able to move. So it's a good spot for them to be in. So I really enjoyed that question. I got a kick out of it. It's a very funny one. So let's move on. And this one, I combined a couple of questions into one because there were a few questions about Afghani Malkin.
Starting point is 00:28:51 And as Hunter and I have said, we don't want to spend the entire offseason. chasing every Malkin story before he hopefully resigns with the team. So Jacob Hutchinson asked on a scale of 1 to 10, how confident are you that Malkin resigns? He said he puts himself in a nine, but that's starting to fade a little bit. And then Penn 68 says he has a gut feeling that Malkin won't be back, referenced Dubus's comments about being loyal to the organization and not individual players.
Starting point is 00:29:21 So I still am very much in the camp that he's going to come back. I think it's just they're taking care of other business. And between the nailers and the baby penguins still being in the postseason, Kyle Dubus and Jason Spetsa being part of Team Canada's management team at the World Championships, they're taking care of other business right now. It doesn't mean that they're ignoring Malkin. It doesn't mean that they're not going to bring him back. But I will say with each passing day that he is not re-signed,
Starting point is 00:29:59 by ever so slightly very little bit, I start to get a little bit concerned, but I still do think at the end of the day he's going to come back. He wants to come back. It's not like he's going to ask for an astronomical amount of money. He's not going to be blocking anyone. Because along with Dubis's comments about being loyal to the organization, in wanting to get the penguins back to contention rather than just being loyal to players. He also referenced himself that bringing Gino back doesn't block anyone.
Starting point is 00:30:29 There's nobody waiting in the wings that he would be taking the spot of. So it's not going to be that big of a deal if he resigns. So I'm still very confident he will be back. But again, with each day that passes that he's not, you start to get little seeds of doubt that it might not. happen, but I still, again, think it's going to happen. Moving along here from another someone on YouTube, Matthews and Riley for Novak, Gerard Coyvenin pickering a 2027 second and a 2028 first that is top 10 protected,
Starting point is 00:31:07 who says no. Probably Austin Matthews. I do think there was a lot of drama about him wanting to maybe leave. And I do think that was more a negotiation ploy and more of a power move by Austin Matthews. Because like a lot of hockey superstars, I don't see him as a guy who medals very often. Josh Yo, he had a piece today in The Athletic talking to Sid about everything going on with Gino. And Crosby basically said, listen, I'm not the GM. I'll give my opinion if I'm asked.
Starting point is 00:31:47 I'll give my opinion if it's needed, but he's not going to tell his general manager how to run the organization, just like he's not going to tell his coach how to run the team. He will give his opinion if asked, he will talk to the staff. And I think Matthews was doing a similar thing. I think Matthews was signaling to the Maple Leafs that he wants to be more involved. He wants to be more of it, have more of a say with what happens with the Toronto Maple Leafs. And you can see that in Chica's comments. where he says he wants players to be partners with the organization. So to me, I don't think Matthews is getting traded. I think if anything, he's probably just going to walk in free agency if he doesn't like where the team is. So I don't see him getting traded unless things are as much of a catastrophe as they were this past season for the Leafs, especially with Gavin McKenna coming in.
Starting point is 00:32:43 And I don't see him forcing his way out. unless it's a really, really bad year in Toronto. But I will say that proposal, I think that's kind of your makings of how you would get Matthews out of Toronto is you would have to attach picks because they are pretty light on picks and you would probably have to attach a couple of prospects and some roster players because if you're trading Austin Matthews, you're not winning the trade,
Starting point is 00:33:12 but you do have to give yourself ammunition to rebuild the organization with without him. So really good question there. Thank you for that. And we'll end with this one from Professor Planet on YouTube. Do you think the penguins ever contend again with Crosby or will we just be stuck in the mushy middle? I really don't know. I think it's entirely possible because I think Kyle Dubus is showing that he does not have the same kind of constraints that he had in Toronto. He seems to have the ability to operate with a lot more freedom in Pittsburgh, and he's able to make the roster moves he wants to make. And I do think the unknown and the X factor for the penguins over these next couple of years is nothing really to do with them,
Starting point is 00:34:08 but what happens around the rest of the league. I say this quite frequently on the show. A lot of teams don't win when they expect to win. And that leads to irrational decisions. It leads to making decisions emotionally because you didn't win the Stanley Cup. So there could be some teams in the East and the West over the next couple of years who fall short of expectation. They don't win a Stanley Cup. They don't get further than the second round. And if they decide this isn't working anymore. There's a world where Kyle Dubus could swing some big deals and that could get the penguins back to contention before Sidney Crosby hangs them up. But the thing I'll add to finish this off is even if they don't, I always try to keep things in perspective. When they drafted
Starting point is 00:35:04 Sidney Crosby and they built this core up 20 plus years ago, they did what they were supposed to do. 16 straight years in the postseason, five trips to the conference final, four trips to the Stanley Cup final, winning it three times. It's as much success as you could ever imagine when Sidney Crosby's name was called. So while I am always greedy and I always want them to win, at the end of the day, this truly has been the golden era of Penguins hockey with Sydney Crosby and company. But that is going to do it for our Friday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast. We will be back with a brand new episode for you on Monday, continuing our season in review series as well as giving you our updates on the baby penguins and the Wheeling Nailers.
Starting point is 00:36:00 Hopefully, we're getting you set for the Eastern Conference final in the Calder Cup playoffs. And hopefully the Wheeling Nailers are ahead or tied in their series with the Florida Everblades. But for now, I am Patrick Damp. Thank you, as always, for tuning in. And we will be back on Monday.
