Hi, well, welcome to Lockdown Caps, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network.
My name is Nikki.
I am your host, and today we are joined by Hunter Hodes' post of Lockdown Penguins.
And we have kind of a fun concept for an episode for you guys today.
Obviously, with the postponement of all sports, not even just professional sports, just all sports everywhere.
We know that you're probably really, really bored.
So we wanted to bring to you some sports movie suggestions, obviously heavy hockey related ones as well.
And we kind of just wanted to debate what our favorites are, maybe throw some hot takes at you.
And then you can leave with your own opinions and let us know which movies you have watched, which movies you will watch.
And if you agree or disagree with any of our takes.
So, Huggner, I will throw the question to you first.
What is your favorite sports movie ever?
Favorite sports movie ever?
Okay, so this is for all sports.
Okay, so this is actually kind of tough.
I know a lot of people would probably say, you know, Miracle, which, you know, it is really good.
Of course, you know, I mean, hold down by her Brooks's speech.
You know, it makes you want to run through a wall during the movie and then, of course, the win.
But, you know, I'm going to go moneyball here.
I think that it's so good in every single way.
Broadset does an amazing job.
And just you could see just what happened when they finally put analytics, like, into the game of baseball.
I guess when it was really just coming into focus.
And you could see what the athletics did, of course, with their 20-game winning streak
and how they portrayed the events of what happened, such as,
was Scott Hadderberg's home run and the extra Indians to win the 20th game in a row.
And the fact that Billy Bean basically declined, what was it, like 15 million per year to go to Boston and San Oakland.
It was just the way that movie, it was just so well done in so many ways.
And I absolutely loved it.
So I will admit, as many of my listeners here know, and people who dislike me, I'm not a huge analytical sports person.
not that I don't enjoy people who are good at it.
I'm just not good at it.
And I've seen Moneyball pieces of it.
I haven't seen the movie in its entirety.
I actually saw pieces of it at like a assembly in high school.
I think like the air condition was out or something,
but they had all of us in one room.
It was like some weird end of the year thing.
But now whenever I think of that movie,
that's all I think about is like being in this giant assembly room
and kind of paying attention, but not really.
but yeah I think that I've heard it's an incredible movie so I'm definitely wrong for not having
watched it and it's a time you definitely should watch it all it's very very good yeah I mean I've
heard it's amazing um I'm gonna be really basic like you said and go with Miracle as my favorite
um it's just a really it's a feel good movie I'm not also not a huge movie person I'm throwing
out these really hot takes here just ready for people to roast me um I am kind of more of like
I'd rather be watching live sports, obviously,
or kind of just traveling out and about, watching live music.
But Miracle, movies in general for me that I love bring a sense of nostalgia.
And Miracle does just that no matter what mood I'm in,
no matter what I'm going through.
Miracle just makes me feel some type of way.
I really don't think as a hockey fan,
you can watch that movie and not get goosebumps.
It's just incredible. I think it was incredibly done as well. I think it was casted perfectly. Disney did a great job by making it cheesy, but not too cheesy. It just gives me all the feels. It reminds me of being a kid. And I could literally watch it every day. And I'm not going to lie, like it'll probably get watched at least three times a week now with no hockey on. Even if it's just in the background while I'm getting stuff.
around the house done. It's just, it's that kind of movie for me. So I think that there's no way I
could put any movie in front of it. Not that other movies aren't better, so to speak. That's just
definitely my favorite for sure. Yeah, knowing you, I figured it would be on probably more than three
times a week now without you out because I know you love it so much. But no, yeah, it is a very
good movie. It's definitely one of my favorite sports movies in general. Yeah, I mean, if you don't,
If someone doesn't get goosebumps after even watching it for the first time,
hell even for the 100th time,
I'd say there's probably something wrong with that person, not going to lie.
Oh, yeah, I agree.
Like something wrong with their emotions, like heartless, grudge level, something's off.
I think I'm going to try.
I think my top three that movies that I enjoy,
they're all going to go to that nostalgia, that cheesy factor for me,
which I feel like Hunter and I will be different.
in those takes, I have a feeling.
So I probably say top three.
It's going to go Miracle, Sandlot, and then Mighty Ducks.
Yes, I am a child.
It's fine.
I'm fine.
That's respectable.
I just, I love Sandlot.
My parents are big Sandlot fans, and it just brings me back to being a little,
I don't know if I had like reminiscent on like sick days,
home from school and watching the Sandlot or what it is,
but it just kind of makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.
and I grew up around baseball on a really like personal level, which actually not a lot of people
know.
So my dad coaches or coached youth baseball.
It was a big part of our life.
I spent a ridiculous amount of time at the baseball fields.
My brother played baseball his entire life.
And so I think some of my happiest times are just kind of sitting at the baseball field
watching my dad coach and my brother play.
And the sandlot brings those memories.
to life through a movie for me
and just kind of seeing kids
have a pickup game of baseball.
It's just such an American classic.
It's a great movie.
That's my second favorite one.
Yeah, just watching,
especially with, you know,
James Earl Jones playing the,
what's his name?
I can't even remember his name.
I know James Earl Jones in it.
James Earl Jones in the movie is always good.
And then, of course, you know,
the whole thing fighting with the dog,
whether that dog is one of the cutest dogs
that's just awesome. Yeah, but you know, they're all
playing a pickup up game. They brought
Babe Ruth into the fact that the James Earl Jones character was like a
teammate as his. I thought that was awesome.
That movie is so good in so many ways.
Oh, yeah. And it's just, I think it brings back
up on a nostalgia for people, you know, anyone who's into
sports in any way in their life, you know, just bring it back to
being young and playing, pick up games with your
friends and really,
just that sense of happiness and childhood.
And I think it's, you know, their biggest issue is so minuscule and the issues of life.
And I think that's what makes the movie so enjoyable is that, you know, they're trying
to get a ball back and, you know, to them.
It's the end of the world that, you know, they have lost this autographed baseball.
And, you know, as an adult when we're dealing with so many real issues that it's just,
it's kind of cute to remember a time when something like that would have been our biggest
issue or, you know, breaking a lamp in our parents' house and how are we going to tell them that we broke this kind of thing.
So I think it just kind of brings you right back to that mindset, which, again, to the nostalgia.
So it's also a movie that I would recommend.
I'm pretty sure you all have seen it.
But re-watching, if you just kind of need something to make yourself feel good,
Dorn needs difficult times right now, throw on some sandlot.
It's hard to not smile when you're watching it.
Yeah, I love it.
And my third favorite one, have you seen Invincible with Mark Wahlberg of your favorite team with Philadelphia Eagles?
Because I know it's the Eagles.
I know it's silly.
But that movie, you know, Vince the Polly.
That gives me goosebumps every time I watch it, too.
I actually have not.
Not because, you know, I would watch it even though I really dislike the Eagles.
But, like I said, there's a ton of movies that I haven't watched.
We could also do, like a regular movie.
episode and I probably get like thrown into traffic for all of the really great and classic
films that I have not seen. My parents are great parents, but they did fail me there, I must
say. So yeah, no, I haven't seen that one, sadly.
God. Oh, that's so good. It's basically about a guy comes off the street to play football for
the Eagles and he, he's, he did, he made the team and I'm not going to tell you what happened.
But it's really good.
I feel like you would definitely tell me what happens.
You're like king of spoiling things.
I'm not,
I'm evil,
but I'm not bad evil.
You're very evil.
So I'm like back in the fellow for people who aren't aware.
I tried to watch The Bachelor or Bachelor.
I don't know,
whatever it was called,
the one that was on this past season with Hunter.
I was like,
oh, like,
we'll watch it together,
like we can make predictions.
And he just spoils it for me because he read spoilers.
He's like,
really, Hunter, thank you for ruining you.
Who cares?
That's just a fun show when you're, it's just, it's funny because all the women on there are just, they're not.
But anyways, have you seen the Goon movies with, oh, what's his, I know the face when I see it, because he played Sifler and American Pie, which is honestly one of my favorite movies of all time.
Have you seen those?
Those are really good, too.
I don't like them.
I know, I knew you would like that another movie because you like, you like, you like, all of a four thing.
I don't think I don't like them.
Oh, okay, okay.
I figured you would.
I figured you would because you like all the fighting.
Oh, ha ha ha ha ha.
No, it's actually funny because a lot of people assume that I would like those movies.
I've been told to watch them by so many.
And then finally, when I was living in Chicago, one of my roommates who was a really good friend at the time was like, you had to watch you.
Like, you would love it.
And I was like, whatever, find to watch it.
And I was like, this is horrific.
I absolutely hated it.
like just awful awful awful awful um yeah not a big fan at all um one is like i think people either
love it or hate it that's kind of what i think with the good i don't know would you agree with that
uh yeah yeah i mean they're i mean they're funny because the guy who plays uh the main character
is probably one of the funniest people i've ever seen in a movie especially if you've watched
the american pie movies you know how funny that guy is
But I don't think they're like too bad, I mean, to be honest with you.
If you really want to be moved by a good sports movie, you know, Jackie Robinson's 42 movie is...
A great one.
That's...
It's hard to watch at times, but man, is it, you know, it's great, you know, especially with Harrison Ford in it too.
It's just that movie, that movie is something else.
It's a great movie, great themes, and it's just great throughout.
It was a really good one that I really liked.
Another, I don't know, this will, maybe, I feel like Klamar is going to yell at me and tell me this is not a sports movie.
But, like, happy Gilmore.
Well, it kind of is.
I mean, because that movie is just funny as heck.
And I know you like Adam Sam Moore a lot, but I mean, it would be very fun.
There's like a love who relationship with him, but I think he's really, really funny.
And put that in with like water boy.
You need some.
Yeah.
But how can you go?
Happy Gilmore, it's a good sports movie and it's funny because it's just a riot.
It's terrible.
I think Waterboy is pretty damn funny, too, if you just kind of need some, I mean, these are not like your heart.
Oh my gosh.
Okay.
Next date night, we're watching.
We have to like an Adam Sandler, like, marathon.
I love Adam Sandler.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That's probably going to happen at some point.
Adam Sandler is my favorite when I was like a teenager.
I mean, don't get me wrong.
I have crushes on like all of the normal teenager.
crushes, but I, if I could marry
anyone, it would still be Adam Sandler.
I think he's hysterical.
I don't know. Just love that guy.
But yeah, I guess they would be a traditional
sports movies, but I would totally
give those a watch if you haven't
seen them. I don't really know
where you could find those. I feel like a lot of
Adam Spender's older movies aren't on
the like traditional streaming
services.
Yeah, some of them are still
not, yeah, on there.
which is,
ah,
yeah,
it's kind of a
shame.
Have you seen
a league
of their own?
I have.
That's a good one too.
A great one,
obviously,
for,
you know,
me and when I stand for
and I speak for,
like a lot is great.
Then,
yeah,
I have to go to my third favorite.
The Mighty Ducks.
Oh my gosh.
I just love,
love, love, love, love,
love.
I was obsessed when I was little.
I think that,
you know,
I relate a lot of my love of hockey
to my dad.
got that from my grandpa but i'm not to like mighty ducks was like the first time i ever
really saw hot i mean i was talking little i was like who at three years old and i had the
biggest crush on charlie and fun fact this is like news that's been given to me for my mom
because obviously i was too young to remember but when she was like trying to give me a bath as like a
baby um she like she'd have to wash my hair and she need me like lead my head back and she'd like
charlie's on the ceiling like look up say hi to charlie like to get me to wash my hair um because i was
so obsessed with my dex i need her put it on over and over and over again um so mighty ducks purely
for the nostalgia um which is what makes sports movies so great in my opinion um i've also
heard that they might be doing some type of like mighty ducks reboot on disney
plus um which i think i've been the minority about being kind of excited for um i don't
really think they can ruin it like i'm not expected it to be as great as the original
but um why not just bring some fun to it uh have you seen the mighty lax movies uh hot take no i have
not. Hunter. Oh, my God. Yeah, I probably get a lot of the listeners I haven't seen that. I still need
to see that. That's all my list of things to do. Yeah, I'm like, done it very hard right now.
I'm questioning my taste and then, as always, with you, with your sports teams.
Yeah, you do that every day, so I'm not, it's nothing out of the ordinary. But what's your most
overrated sports movie all the time.
I have a good answer for that.
Oh, boy.
Most overrated sports movie.
I feel like if I say mine, I'm going to get a lot of hate.
Say it.
I think, remember the Titans is a little bit overrated?
Oh, geez.
No, that one never gets old.
I'm just, okay, I don't think it's bad.
I'm not saying that I didn't enjoy it.
That's just a much watch every time it comes on TV.
If someone's just like I tweeted this yesterday, it's like Twister,
where like anytime like it's on, I don't care how far it is into it,
you just have to turn it on and watch it because it's just so good.
Yeah, I mean, I'm not saying it's not good.
I feel like maybe I just, I don't know,
for whatever reason I feel like it's a little bit overhyped.
I'm not going to like give a ridiculous hot take and be like,
it's awful.
It's the worst movie ever.
But it's not like a huge fan.
I think it's a little bit.
overplayed, overdone.
I don't know. What was yours?
Bad take for Nicole on this one.
Whatever. For me, it's the blind side.
I think that movie's way too overrated.
Okay, I really like that one.
I think that it was actually like superb acting.
I love the story in general.
So I think that plays into it a little bit for me.
Yeah, as usual, another bad take coming from Hunter, but it's fine.
like we're used to it at this point.
I mean, it's not like a bad, but I feel like it's too...
It's just, I mean, I mean, great story with what he did, going to college and everything.
I just, yeah, I mean, he can...
And his career, he started out really good.
And then, of course, he kind of went from team to team, I think.
He got drafted by the Ravens, I think.
And then he kind of bounced around for, well, if it still went to the NFL, though, which is awesome.
I just, I think, I don't know.
same the bowl, like, hit her miss for me in all honesty.
Like, she's really good in some movies.
Other movies, she's kind of mad.
I kind of felt like in the line, like, she was just okay.
But, you know, sue me for that take, I guess.
Yeah.
Well, I mean, obviously, everyone's welcome to their own opinion.
I feel like at the end of the day, there's not really a lot of bad sports movies.
Probably for people who have kind of their ones that think are overrated or this and that.
But I think that a movie, you know, even though it might not be.
perfectly done, it can still bring a nostalgia or a smile.
There really are just so many to pick from, which is awesome.
So I feel like I'm going to try and compose a list to add to when I share this podcast,
some movies that you guys can watch and where you can find them on.
I also wanted to throw this out there.
I'm not sure how many people can access it, but if anyone needs access to, like,
any of the streaming networks right now.
Dorm used crazy times.
I'll hook you up and help you out.
I'll give a couple.
I'll give a couple.
For tennis fans, if you got watched tennis like me,
McEnroe versus Borgue is just,
Bjork is just outstanding.
John McInch was played by Shia LaBalbos,
who I know can be hit or miss by a lot of people,
but I think he portrays John Mackin
really, really well for those that
know who John McIner was.
for basketball, I'm Coach Carter.
That's just, that's a classic in every single way.
Yeah, that's a great one.
I think also, God, I'm going to be a bad joke because some comedic relief is what we all need right now, right?
I cannot stop thinking of Space Jam right now, watching everything that's gone down.
Oh, yeah.
So, like, literally, I watched Space Jam like three days ago, I think, for the first time and forever.
And then, like, everything went down literally, like, the night I watched.
watched it and I was like, oh my God, like is this literally space jam?
But that's just also a classic, a funny, nice, lighthearted, ridiculous movie.
But for basketball fans or really just anyone, that's also kind of a fun one to watch.
That I think definitely brings that nostalgia factor to a lot of kids.
I know that was like a lot of kids favorite growing up.
Surprisingly, a lot of kids nowadays also love space jam, but fact.
so that's a good one yeah I don't there's just so many like when you start talking about it
and then you start thinking oh yeah this one I totally forgot about this one like the blinds I've
actually totally forgot about and she brought that up yeah there's just there's so many that are just
so they're just so good and so I can't wait for more to come out in the future because I'm sure
they're going to be really good too I feel like there's probably going to be a really good
movie based on what's going on in the world of sports right now, like the day the sports world
went quiet. But yeah, I could definitely see that happening too. Yeah, I think it would be
would be a great one. Also, I have you here. I did want to ask for your opinion on one thing.
This is totally off topic of what we've been talking about, but Hunter is finishing up his
senior year of college. And as you guys know, many campuses have moved to
online only um hunter is also a huge college sports fan so i hunter i want your opinion on
college seniors losing out on the end of what's like such a special semester in addition to
the pain that those college athletes are going on going through um kind of college athletes of
every grade level but especially those seniors um you know what do you have to say about that and
you know what are you feeling in regards
to what's going on there.
Yeah, I just, I feel really bad for all of them, you know, especially, I have a really,
really good friend in my major back at Tech who plays for the girls across team.
Taylor Katzky, shout out to you.
If you listen to this, you're probably one of the best lacrosse players that are watched,
but she had this very long post yesterday, basically, you know, just, you know, thanking everyone
how sad she was.
And that's just, like, that's the kind of stuff I feel bad for because, like, four years
both on the team, like, they're trying, you know, you're trying to, like, have a really good season
and potentially make the NCAA tournament.
And then now you can, especially with March Madness, it was supposed to be next week,
which is a lot of people say, one of very people's favorite past nights, especially because
the game started, you know, the first and second on the game start at 12 o'clock each day,
like on the Thursday and Friday, you can watch them while you're at work, you can watch them
while you're in class.
I know people will probably yell at you when you do that sometimes, but, um, and, you know,
I don't care. I've done it so many times.
It's March Madness.
Like, that's what it is.
And it's, I feel so awful for all the kids that just, you know,
they can't try to live their dream of winning a national championship in their senior
years.
Like, that's just, that's the big thing.
And, yeah, from my school, especially, like I said, with Taylor, I feel really bad for
her because the team down there was actually having a really good season.
They were ranked and to have it come to an end like this.
It's like, thanks.
It's hard. I feel I don't only have any ties with any college athletes and I'm not a huge college sports fan. I will save that for another day and you don't want to sound insensitive right now. But it's just really tough. I really feel for those athletes. I feel for high school athletes too. I mean, high school seniors who are getting to play. There's spring sports. I don't think I haven't even started yet in high school. You know, baseball and track and other sports.
sports like that. So that's really hard, I think, especially for seniors who just want to play
one more season with their friends and they're not going to be able to. And obviously,
they're doing it for the right reasons. But it's hard. Just another effect on this that I don't
think a lot of people are really paying. But it's definitely. Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. So
to end this on a positive note, this was super fun. We have a lot more. I have a lot more. I have a lot
more and Hunter will have a lot more. Awesome and fun and interesting content coming for you guys.
The Wachshone network is committed and working really hard to making these kinds of your life
a little bit easier. We have been communicating constantly, have had meetings and discussions
about what type of content we can bring you guys. We and myself want to be the person that
you go to for that for that outlet and that stress relief at the, you know, end of a stressful
day. So stay tuned. It's not going to be your typical podcast, obviously. You might feel a little
bit off topic, obviously, but it's given me a ton of fun, a ton of sports-related conversation
and definitely look out for more guests, more calls over episodes. These conversations are
really fun and I know they keep it fresh and exciting for not just us but for the listeners as well
so thank you guys so much for tuning in and for appearing with us doing enough times and as always
even then we're not playing let's goaps baby thank guys yeah thank you so much for having
Thank you all.
Okay.
