Hello, welcome to this Tuesday evening episode of the Locked-on Penguins podcast.
I'm, of course, your host, Hunter Hodes, follow me on Twitter at Hunter Hodes, follow the show's Twitter, at L.O. underscore Penguins.
Hope you all are staying indoors, enjoying social distancing, practicing or social distancing, I should say.
And I just want to say, first off, you know, thank you guys so much for voting in the polls for the first round.
We had a lot more votes than I thought there would be.
Hell, three of these matchups went to overtime, which we'll get to you, but really just want to say,
say, you know, this bracket was just a lot of fun to make. And, you know, we have the Sweet
16 already. I'm going to be finishing filling them out on the bracket. And then after,
we're going to put the matchups up and it's going to be 24 more hours. But, you know, let's just
get right into it. There were a couple upsets that I did not see coming, especially the Pittsburgh
Washington 91 series lost to the 3 seed to a 14 seed, the Pittsburgh Columbus 2014 series.
very surprised by that
I just definitely did not see that coming
that's one way to put it at least
I thought that was definitely not going to be an upset
but you know maybe a couple people threw their vote
now I'm just messing with you
I guess people you know they want chaos and you know what
we will give them chaos but
you know I'll obviously at the start of the bracket
you know Pittsburgh Minnesota 91 Stanley Cup final
just blew away Pittsburgh St. Louis
there were no 16 seats upsetting
a number one seed
unlike Virginia did when they
were the one seat and lost a UMBC in the actual March Madness term a couple years ago.
But they also went on to win the title the next year.
So, you know, I really don't have much room to talk, but still, I can always laugh about that
because, you know, screw UVA.
I'm not a big UVA fan, of course, as I go to Virginia Tech.
But anyways, also in that bracket, Pittsburgh, Oakland, the 1970 series got absolutely
beaten down.
The voters definitely like the Pittsburgh Boston 91 series on the conference final.
I ceded the Pittsburgh Oakland series as eight, because, you know, you know,
You know, it was their first playoff series victory.
You know, I have a soft spot for Michelle Brieger.
And, you know, how he basically carried that whole team in that series.
And then they lost, of course, the next round to the St. Louis Blues.
I believe it was in, what, six games?
Excuse me.
But, yeah, they wiped the floor there.
Then the four versus 13.
Pittsburgh, Washington of 2017, blows out Pittsburgh, Ottawa of 2008.
Yeah, I thought that was coming, especially with how great that Pittsburgh, Washington series was.
I mean, that also could have been a series that ended in five games,
but, you know, the Penguins were also kind of lucky to win that series.
And, of course, our 5-12 in regulation time ended at 50-50 out of 36 votes.
Pittsburgh National 2017 is the five-seat versus Pittsburgh Washington, 2016,
as the 12-seat.
And a 12-seat upset the five.
It does.
Pittsburgh, Washington did upset Pittsburgh, Nashville.
I wanted to put that as a question.
cool matchup because I figured that would be a potential really, really big upset.
Of course it happened.
Both those series, you can make a case for, but one of, honestly, both of them being better
than the other one in Pittsburgh, Washington was able to get that one.
Then, of course, we moved to the upset, 34 votes, 55% go for Pittsburgh, Columbus, 2014
over Pittsburgh, Washington, 1991.
Got to say, I'm a little bit surprised by that.
I think that's a little bit questionable.
But, you know, I guess a lot of people like that Pittsburgh Columbus series
and the Evgeny Malkin Hattrick that happened in game six.
But I think a lot of people don't realize that Pittsburgh was very close to going to game seven of that series.
I remember myself personally almost crapping my pants after Columbus made it four to three
with, what, six minutes left in the game?
Yeah, it was very, they were almost tied that.
The Penguins almost choked that away.
But that will move on to the next round.
And we also have another upset.
I was a little surprised by this one, too.
Buffalo, 2001 with Darius Casperitis, overtime goal,
loses to Pittsburgh, New York of 2008, 35 votes,
when Marion Hosa, of course, ended the series for the Penguins in five games
against the Rangers.
Man, I remember watching that series, you know, just as a little kid,
and Marian Hosa was just, he was just such a treat to watch.
And, yeah, definitely a little surprised that that one, I think,
beating the Casperitis.
Well, just because the Casperitis one was so legendary.
and that, you know, no one, I don't think,
pick the Penguins to beat the Sabres in that series.
Yeah, the Penguins almost made a Stanley Cup run that year.
I know I believe they lost in the next round.
I think it was what to New Jersey that year, if I'm not mistaken.
I got to, if I messed that up, then I'm a full on.
I believe they lost to New Jersey that year, though, and they, yeah, the next round.
But, yeah, definitely surprised.
That was very close to 51% to 40, 51.4 to 48.6.
And then two more in this section.
Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay edges out.
Pittsburgh, New York of 92,
Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay of 2016, of course.
I thought that was a little bit expected,
so, yeah, so that one wins.
And then, of course, the last one for the first section.
Pittsburgh, Washington, 2009, 71% over Pittsburgh Ottawa 2010.
Absolutely wipes the floor.
So Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, 2016, Pittsburgh, Washington, 2009.
We'll be going at it in the Sweet 16.
You know, I'll be previewing all of the Sweet 16 matchups.
I'm in the next segment, actually, but.
To the next section, one versus 16 absolutely wipes the floor again.
Pittsburgh, Detroit of 2009 versus Pittsburgh Buffalo of 1979.
Yeah, that was not going to be a debate at all.
The toss-up between the two Rangers series, the nine-seed wins,
the Rangers Penguin Series of 96.
Edges will the one out of 89 when, of course,
Mario Lemieux made his penguin playoff debut.
It was honestly really wasn't edging out, 66%.
So basically two-thirds of the voters went towards.
the nine seed.
Then, of course, the next one, Pittsburgh San Jose, the Stanley Cup final in 2016.
62% voted for that.
That one won over Pittsburgh Columbus of 2017.
No surprises there.
Then, of course, we had another tiebreaker, basically.
Well, one that we had to go to overtime between the five seed, Pittsburgh, Ottawa of 2017,
and Pittsburgh, Philly of 2008.
And we had one hour overtime.
and then in the overtime, Pittsburgh, Ottawa,
wipe the floor, 85% of the votes go to that.
So Pittsburgh, Ottawa, there will not be another 12-5 upset.
Pittsburgh, Ottawa wins in extra time.
And then the next one,
Pittsburgh, New Jersey of 1999 against Pittsburgh, Ottawa, 2013.
Pittsburgh, New Jersey 99, of course,
with the Army Yager's Heroics.
That ends up advancing to the Sweet 16 as well.
Though that next matchup is going to be pretty interesting
with going up against,
Of course, the 6-11 actually went to overtime.
The Pittsburgh-Washington 95 series, the Pittsburgh-Boston-902 series.
I have to click these links to actually just get to them.
And, of course, Pittsburgh-Boston, five votes overall in the overtime in Pittsburgh, Boston of 92,
ended up winning.
So it will be Pittsburgh-Boston of 92 in the Sweet 16 to meet Pittsburgh on New Jersey of 99.
and then a couple more matchups to close out this first segment.
Excuse me.
Pittsburgh, Carolina, 2009.
Beats out Pittsburgh, Washington of 2000, of course,
with Afghani Malkins, just dominance, you know.
Remember just hearing the call of Gany Malkins, Hattrick, you know.
All me, all the time, like of game two,
and he just, you know, made the Carolina Hurricanes and Cam Ward,
especially in there just looked like utter buffoons.
And then the last matchup, which was a little closer than I thought it was going to be,
27 votes. Pittsburgh, Chicago, 1992, Stanley Cup final, edges out Pittsburgh, Philadelphia of 2018.
About 52% to 48%. And yeah, that basically does it for the first round. The Sweet 16 is finally here.
This was a lot of fun for the first round. There were definitely some unexpected results that I did not see coming.
But, you know, like I said, earlier on in this episode, I love chaos. And that's what we definitely have here now going into the Sweet 16.
All right, so to preview the Sweet 16 here,
first matchup in the Sweet 16,
it'll be the Pittsburgh, Minnesota Stanley Cup final of 1991
against the Pittsburgh-Boston series of 1991,
the 1 versus 9.
You know, I think I know who I would vote for a year,
but, you know, the voting is up to you all
on the Locked-on Penguins' Twitter account and on my Twitter account.
I have an idea of who is going to get to the next round,
but, again, I leave it up to you,
so that will be an interesting matchup.
we then have the Pittsburgh Washington series of 2017.
We're both the Washington series of the 2010s going up against each other.
Pittsburgh Washington, 2016, Pittsburgh Washington, 2017 in this week 16.
Honestly, that's just really close to call, I think, in my opinion.
I'm honestly not really sure which one I would vote for.
Maybe I would lean Pittsburgh Washington 2017, but, you know, that's my take just because I think.
That one also crush the Caps fans more, which I think does more for.
you at least. And of course, our big upset. The 14 seed, Pittsburgh, Columbus, going up in the
Sweet 16 against Pittsburgh, New York of 2008. So the 14 and the 11 seed will be going at it in the
Sweet 16. I'm not really sure what people are going to go for there. I honestly am not really
sure myself, but I'm really, really excited to see how you guys vote for that one. And then
the Pittsburgh-Tampa Bay series of 2016 will go up against Pittsburgh, Washington.
of 2009. I'm pretty sure, like I said, where I would go in that. But, you know, I think some
people honestly may like the Pittsburgh-Tamber Bay series more, though, even though I think
Pittsburgh, Washington, 2009 is honestly one of the best playoff series in, you know, of our generation,
just because of how dominant both Alexovetch and Cindy Krosby were. And then, of course,
oh, yeah, you have Evgeny Malkin, who, you know, was basically like a silent, a sleeping giant
for some of that series, and then woke up as it gone along.
Moving on to the next part of the bracket,
Pittsburgh, Detroit, 2009 moves on.
Like I said, no 16-seat upset.
They will be playing the 9th seed, Pittsburgh, New York of 1996.
Baring something unforeseen, which, you know,
people maybe throwing their vote or whatever,
you know, I know maybe someone there could do that.
Maybe, I'm just maybe messing around.
But Pittsburgh, Detroit should move on, I would think.
But, you know, we're going to leave it up to you all.
and then Pittsburgh San Jose in the Sweet 16,
and they will be going up against Pittsburgh, Ottawa of 2017,
so an Eastern Conference final going up against a most recent Stanley Cup final.
That's going to be a good one.
I think people could lean the Stanley Cup final,
but Pittsburgh Ottawa, 2017,
was just an amazing seven-game series with, of course,
Chris Kunitz is heroic,
so can't wait to see what happens in that match-up.
Pittsburgh, New Jersey, 99.
Of course, moving on to the Sweet 16,
they will be meeting
um
jeez the fact that I don't even have this
I was honestly trying to memorize these
all at once
okay finally yeah I'm not finally got yeah
there will be going up against Pittsburgh Boston
um of 1992
so um yeah that this is also
going to be another very interesting one
I know please drink a shot every time I say this is going to be a very
interesting matchup because I literally don't know
what else to say but yeah Pittsburgh New Jersey
wiped the floor with um I honestly really really
didn't wipe the floor of Pittsburgh Ottawa 2013.
But that 6-11 matchup I always thought was going to be close.
I think me and Cam thought that one was going to be one of the close ones.
Of course it was as it went into the extra session.
But Pittsburgh-Boston M. 92 ended up taking the cake.
So can there be another upset in the cards going up against Yarmier's Heroics of the Penguin's Devil Series of 1999,
which basically saved the franchise at least once?
Could see it.
You know, we never really know at this point.
And of course to the final sweet 16 matchup,
Pittsburgh Carolina of 2009.
We'll be going up against Pittsburgh, Chicago, 1992 Stanley Cup final,
where the Penguins swept the Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup final.
So another two versus seven matchup.
Yeah, so these are all some outstanding matchups.
After I get this episode up and running,
or just up and posted, I should say, Jesus.
We're going to have the poll starting.
I know it's going to start a little bit late at night.
but you know what we're going to do it and it's going to be great
I'm really excited to get this next round going
I'll be curious to see how the results are coming in tomorrow
for the podcast I think it's going to be very very interesting
to see what happens with them
heck you know what I honestly may make them right now as I'm recording
as it's still 915 as of this recording right now
just about almost 15 minutes into this recording
and I don't really want to wait till 10 p.m. to do it
because I feel like the voter turned out
could be a little bit less.
And all right, perfect.
Yeah, I actually ended up pausing this recording and tweet all these out because, yeah, I didn't want to do this live.
And, well, I didn't want to do it while recording, actually.
Well, yeah, I just didn't want to do that.
But, yeah, the polls are open now.
So if you're listening to this at the 13, almost the 14 minute mark, go out, vote.
You know, I'm sure you probably will see this by the time on this episode I was posted.
But you know what?
Go out, vote.
Polls will now close at around.
a little before 930 tomorrow night.
That's probably honestly when I will have my next episode up.
So can't wait to do that.
This is, like I said, this has been a lot of fun.
Hopefully, you all do more brackets moving forward.
Me and Cam, we're actually talking about maybe doing a worst trade in Penguin History edition.
I think that would be really good, especially with some, in recent times, of course,
with Ryan Reeves would definitely, I think, be up there.
Going to go back about 20 years, Marcus Naslin, honestly.
would probably be one of the top seats.
The Yara Miri Yager trade, just a bunch more.
I think that would be a really fun one.
We could also do one of maybe one of the worst contracts ever signed from a general manager to a player,
you know, Jack Johnson, Rob Skidary.
So, yeah, I think that would really be fun.
You know, there's just a lot of really cool ideas that I think we could come up with.
Yeah, I know March is almost over, but, you know, March Madness also goes into April a little bit,
usually with, of course, the national championship game and the final four.
So I think it actually goes into like the second week of April
at least over the first week of April.
I think, yeah, I'd have to go back and check.
I'm about 90% sure.
But you know what?
Don't quote me on that.
But yeah, I feel like that would be honestly a lot of fun.
No, we're looking at some early, early results right now.
As I refresh my Twitter feed, actually, we'll do this in real time.
Right now, if just a few votes in, looks like Pittsburgh, Minnesota, 91's down like a final.
up. Really close to one so far. The boat, the Pittsburgh-Washington series of 2016-17.
A few votes in 50-50 right now. Wow, I almost like lost my voice here for a second. My apologies
on that. Go to the 14-11 matchup. A few votes are in. Pittsburgh, New York. 2008 is currently
leading the plaque with about two-thirds of the vote. Still, it's very, very early, of course,
over Pittsburgh, Columbus of 2014. Just a couple votes into the...
the Pittsburgh Washington, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay Series.
Pittsburgh, Washington is leading that right now.
Pittsburgh, Detroit, 2009, onto the next section of the eight ones left.
That's currently leading right now.
50-50 right now, Pittsburgh-Sanazade, 2016, Pittsburgh, Ottawa, 2017.
Well, actually, in real time, Pittsburgh, Ottawa just took the lead.
So, yeah, we're going to be doing this real time.
It's like we're doing, like, the primaries for the presidential race.
Pittsburgh, New Jersey of 99, currently just a little bit in the lead, just a couple of votes
in and then Pittsburgh, Carolina, 2009 is also in the leadover of Pittsburgh, Chicago of the 92
Stanley Cup final.
So, yeah, these are, like I said, these are just, you know, there's only about, you know,
four to five, maybe six votes for each of these.
Some of these only, honestly, only have about two to three right now.
But still, you know, I just wanted to give you those results in real time and, you know,
just keep on voting, keep it coming.
This is, you know, it's only going to get better as the match.
get even tougher as we get to the elite eight, the final four,
and then, of course, the national championship,
the best for the best penguin playoff series in franchise history.
So as I didn't know really what to talk about for this last segment,
since you know there's no lot going on,
though Peter LeBron did have an article on the athletic today,
apparently with the NHL had a conference call with their GMs today.
According to a couple of his sources,
the league said that basically the self-quarantining schedule is going to be extended.
by another 10 days.
Again, that's not really surprising with the new developments that we have coming in every day.
With, you know, states being put on full-on lockdowns.
You know, I think my state of Virginia is probably going to be coming up next.
At least that's what I think, at least.
And then apparently, the NFL has asked teams for building availability through the month of August.
So, yeah, if we're going to have a comeback, it's not likely going to be, you know, for playoffs until late July, August, September.
And then, you know, maybe starting a season and to November.
remember. But also, so NBC, well, NHNBC Sports Network, they've been, you know, running a lot of these old playoff classics of the past decade, which, you know, I like, you know, that's really good marketing, you know, it gets people back into watching hockey, especially some outstanding playoff games of the last decade.
Um, so I decided to hate watch game three of the Penguins Flyers 2012 series because, well, I hate myself and I like pain.
So, um, I just wanted to share some thoughts just out of that series, just in general.
Um, he's watching that whole game back live.
You know what I mean?
I was 14 at the time that series happened now.
Now I'm 22.
Um,
I don't think I truly under,
I think I underestimated,
I guess is the right thing to say.
How bad Mark Andre Fleury was that run.
Um, you know,
back then, you know, I was, you know,
oh my God,
Fleury, this, story that.
You know, I'm like one of those three cult people that,
you know, still hate on Matt Murray for taking his job.
I think I was probably one of those people back when I was,
14 or 15 years old. I just absolutely adored everything. You know, I think I was one of those people
that was like, oh my God, it's not his fault. It's not his fault. But, you know, and I just, when I watched
it back tonight, and, you know, I've watched it back since then, too. But, you know, also tonight,
man, that's got to be some of the worst goaltending in modern penguin's history. But
that was just brutal. He was, I don't know what was going on. You know, I think it was right
after that he had to go, what, see a sports psychologist or something like that to help fix his
game. It was just bad.
I didn't realize that Chris LaTang basically put Kimo Teaman's jersey over his head and just started
throwing haymakers out. Oh, my God. I mean, I remember when I was watching that, I was
cheering that on because, you know, I liked fighting when I was 14 and I was just a dumbass little kid.
But man, I never knew how bad it was because Chris LaTang was just, who he was going at him like
there was no more. Then, of course, you had the Cindy Crosby called Drew.
fire where Crosby kind of
you know
I don't say he beat the crap out of him
but he did throw a couple uppercuts
at him and then of course you have Craig Adams
and Scar Hardinel man
watching that game back
I'm like stuttering
because I'm trying to figure out what to say here
yeah I could not stand
in Scott Hartnall all the time I cannot stand
Scott Hartnell still to this day especially when he has that
just awful looking
hair that he had back then I was
just, ugh, that kind of hair is just disgusting, and he was just a complete ass in general.
But, you know, the whole series honestly still makes me a little triggered to this day.
But, you know, when you really think about it, the Penguins have won a couple championships since then,
the Flyers really haven't done anything.
They've been, honestly, mediocre.
You know, that year, everyone, I believe, was the last time the Flyers won a playoff series.
I think ever since that Playoff Series victory for the Philadelphia Flyers, they have not won
a playoff series in general since then.
So, congratulations, Philadelphia.
Philadelphia, congratulations.
But, yeah, I'll never take a day granted where I don't have to rose, where I do not roast Philadelphia fires, because it is fun to do so.
Also, yeah, James Neal, I think that's the last thing I'm going to say about that game.
Man, was he just an ass?
You know, I think I, I think when I was 14, I kind of found what he was doing funny.
I was just like, oh, yeah, okay, you know, he's just running around hitting people.
Yeah, go hits, go hits.
You know, it didn't get me until a couple years later when I got to about 16, 17 years old.
Then, of course, today as I'm 22, man, he was just cheap shot after cheap shot, after cheap shot, after cheat shot.
It was on Sean Couturier.
It was on Claudeau.
It was on Jacob Vorichek.
Oh, my God.
It was like, man, I kind of like started hating him a little more to this day because he was just being such an ass of himself.
And then, oh, yeah, the Aaron Ashen thing.
That's the last thing I was going to say.
One more thing.
Aaron Ashon, start a fucking ragged shed after he went after Paul Martin.
I remember, yeah, I do remember what I do remember what I was.
I did that. I stood up and jumped when Ashen did that and basically yelled a few words that I will
not repeat on this podcast because, yeah, I'm just not going to repeat them because they're really,
really bad words. And you know what? I was 14 years old and I was a late middle school student.
So I was just learning a bunch of those very, very bad words. But you know what? We don't say
those words on this podcast especially. But thank you guys so much again for listening to this
episode of Locked on Penguins. Please go out. No, vote in the Sweet 16 matchups. We'll have the
Elite 8 for you guys tomorrow night. We'll have an episode tomorrow night to break down the
Sweet 16 matchups. Look forward to the Elite 8, you know, see what you guys come up with.
Try not to throw your votes. I know, some people I know we can't resist. So, like I said,
if it's going to be chaos, it's chaos. So like I said, follow me on Twitter at Hunter Hodes.
That's where all the polls are going. Follow the shows. Twitter at L.O. underscore Penguins.
And we will have another episode for you guys coming for you tomorrow.
All right. Take care, everyone.
