Seth Tuple from Locked-on Wild, Eddie Garcia of Locked-on L.A. Kings, and Kimmel of Locked-on Predators and Haley Taylor Simon of Locked-on Blues. we are ready to start the conference finals.
Starting point is 00:01:35 I can't believe we are halfway through the Stanley Cup playoffs. And even though there's only four teams left, we've actually got a shot at a rematch in the Stanley Cup final coming up. Which one of these two series is a little more exciting for you guys? Well, if you're going to go Star Power, I think it's pretty obvious that you're looking out west. you know, when you've got, you know, Connor McDavid, Leon Drysidal, Miko Rantan, a pretty big star power going on on the other side.
Starting point is 00:02:10 So I guess you maybe tend to gravitate that towards that a little bit. Panthers looking for a repeat. Certainly, I guess, would be the storyline on the eastern side. But I would say I'd have to gravitate a little bit out west as far as just that, that star power up front to be able to tune in and see those guys back. rattling every night. So I would have to look at... Go ahead. Go ahead, Ailey.
Starting point is 00:02:36 So I would have to look at the East. That for me is the more entertaining, in a sense, because it's the Florida Panthers. I'm a huge Matthew Cichuk fan. I'm here in St. Louis. We love the Cichuk family. But just overall, I went a rematch of last year's Stanley Cup. And for whatever reason, I feel like the Panthers and the Kings are going to be one of the most underrated series just because everyone's doubting the Kings.
Starting point is 00:02:57 I think that this series will be going to seven games. I'll say for this, for these two matchups, it's interesting because of all of the talk regarding the hurricanes and their boring style of play that people would I think tends to lean towards the, uh, the stars and the oilers. And that's probably the right answer. But it is intriguing that you have the Florida Panthers trying to go for a third straight Stanley Cup final. And the players that they bring to the table that have been through this entire run and a Hurricanes team that has plenty of great players. But like, who's, who's the star? Who's the, the big name that, uh, that you're going to pull as like the, the one that kind of announces, hey, we're here. It's just, it's a group that has done a really good job all season.
Starting point is 00:04:00 but it has kind of been a committee approach and very much a like here's our punch card we're going to clock in at nine we're going to win the game and we're going to clock out at five and that's really all you're going to hear about it um obviously as a western conference host i'm super intrigued by the uh the oiler stars matchup and mostly what are we going to get from the oilers in net are we going to get the steward skinner revival? Are we going to get the Stuart Skinner Black Hole? Are we going to get the Calvin Pickard, save your story? Are we going to get, oh, it's Calvin Pickard? Come on. It remains to be seen. I love the Eastern Conference matchup, simply for the
Starting point is 00:04:48 reasons that you say, Seth, in the sense that marketability-wise, Carolina does not give you a lot to work with. You know, just from a straight, razzle-dazzle them. but I almost want to see how that style of play does against a Florida Panthers team that is loaded with recognizable faces. And I think that is an interesting storyline. Now, I will also say as a host of a Western Conference team, I'm excited to see Dallas and Edmonton.
Starting point is 00:05:16 As the host of a team that is paying $5.5 million to somebody who is not on our team to play in the Western Conference finals, I'll be interested to see what Matt Duchenne and the Dallas Stars can do. But I think there are really good questions about both of these matchups that are going to make this interesting. And I love that about this season. I think every single matchup that we have had these Stanley Cup finals, there has been a storyline. Whether it's been the same storyline round one into round two or not, there's always been a really good storyline. And for me, the lack of a Carolina superstar is part of the appeal for me. What can a team by committee that doesn't really have that standout?
Starting point is 00:05:57 marketable guy, what are they going to do against a team that has a couple marketable standout guys? I think it's going to be really interesting. Well, I hope Carolina can win game one because then it will be nine straight losses in the Eastern conference finals if they don't. And that is obviously going to be become a pretty big storyline. So I'd love to see them get off to a good start, get the game one win. I think that would probably help a lot in getting a deep competitive series. When we talk about the hurricanes, go ahead, Tate.
Starting point is 00:06:29 Yeah, when we talk about the hurricanes, though, and you guys say that there's really no star player, I kind of laugh a little bit sometimes what I think of Frederick Anderson and Nett, because he has been, at least in my opinion, as standout goalie. They also have Sebastian AHA, who's been consistent throughout the years. They also have Taylor Hall. So while I understand there may not be a superstar, I'm having a hard time looking at this group and not being able to pay out names of players that have been stand out throughout their time in the NHL.
Starting point is 00:06:54 Yeah, it's hard to say that Sebastian Aho isn't a standout player. I think for me it's more about marketability than it is talent. And I am 100% here for let's lean into Freddie Anderson. Dude is getting AARP mailings and he is still the best goaltender in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Like I am here for the storyline. I agree with you, though. You cannot look at the Carolina roster and say this is a team that's not talented. It is insanely talented.
Starting point is 00:07:22 I just don't know that it's marketed. like all these other teams are. I think they're a great team, but they don't have. I mean, I have tons of respect for Sebastian Aho, but he's not a superstar player. He's a very, very good player, but he's not a superstar. But look, I love team sports. I'm not watching golf tonight or whatever. I'm watching hockey because I love team sports.
Starting point is 00:07:43 And they were a great team. And I do appreciate that. I absolutely do. So, you know, they're greater than the sum of their pieces, I guess you would say. So great team. great coach, but they have been had their issues in the conference final. So like I said, I'd like to see them get off to a good start. I think that would help translate to a better series.
Starting point is 00:08:02 I would love to put to rest to the whole idea that you have to have that one elite guy, that there is some sort of accurate checklist in the NHL that if you don't have this particular elite unicorn, your team can't win it. I am so here for Carolina just for that reason. And I wanted to, you know, the one. thing I was going to bring up and you all did a great job of touching on it. Frederick Anderson, I don't think he gets enough respect for what he's accomplished in the playoffs this year. And just overall, I mean, yeah, he's been hurt a lot. And yeah, he kind of ends up alternating
Starting point is 00:08:41 with other players. But come playoff time, when he's been healthy, he's been really, really good. He's been the best goal of the playoffs so far. And nobody would have probably predicted that, right, going into this postseason. And I'm sure Toronto Mapleese fans are really excited to see that Frederick Anderson is getting it done in the postseason for another team. That's got to be something that adds to their joy at this time of the year. It's fun for the rest of us. I don't think that's joy. I don't think that feeling is joy.
Starting point is 00:09:10 No, I don't think it is. We can dive into that emotion another time. But I think for Anderson, though, when we look at goalies in the playoffs and while I can be able to be biased with the blues, In total fairness, I don't think anybody expected working at Winnipeg to Conor Hallibuck to a crumbled way that he did. And even Jordan Biddington had some slipups while he still performed well. Again, a little biased, but that series just highlighted to me what made Anderson stand out in net. And I was saying to a couple people the other day, but goalies win you games in the playoffs. While scoring is important, if you don't have a solid goalie, you're not going to win.
Starting point is 00:09:47 And I love Bob. I spent many years watching Bob play hockey in net. but at the same time, I think if you're comparing the two goalies between Anderson and Bob, you're going to have to go with Anderson. And I mean, even Jake Odinger has looked phenomenal and he doesn't get enough recognition. I think we kind of, we don't talk enough sometimes about the goalies and we talk about the star players, the star forwards. But the goalies, I mean, at the end of the day, if Connor Hallibuck was a little bit better
Starting point is 00:10:14 in net, I believe the Jets would have won. So it really goes back to who is in net for your team. Hellebuck has made postseason struggles kind of his thing, though. Like he has been not even just not as good in the regular season. Like, worst goalie in the playoffs for the last four years running, I think, by a large margin. So the goaltending, you have to have the goaltending because if you don't have a goalie in net that can keep the other team off the board. You're just, you're chasing. And in the playoffs, it is so much harder to chase, uh, one goal deficit, a two goal deficit. But, uh, you know, you, you look at these goalies and
Starting point is 00:11:03 Sergey Bobrovsky, say what you will about his, uh, you know, his regular season. He, he kind of is up and his down. He even has been up and down in the playoffs. He's been here before. And he knows what you can and can't do when the game is on the line. And he is probably, he is clearly the number two goalie in that series, but he's, he has shown he's more than capable of giving Florida good performances when, when asked. Yeah. And, you know, sometimes it's not how many saves you make.
Starting point is 00:11:38 It's when you make them and how you make them. And coming up in the clutch is a huge part of it. And, you know, just briefly with Hellebuck, he was so good. at home in the playoffs this year and on the road, he didn't look like Connor Hellebuck anymore. It was very mystifying. But anyway, we've got more to discuss on today's show. We're going to talk a little bit about the mess that is the Maple Leafs. So we've got that and more coming up on the squad show.

So the Toronto Maple Leafs, 58 years in counting, since they've been to, a cup final. Every year, it's this is the year and they've been a contender for so long.
Starting point is 00:13:31 But now they've got a situation where the big four, I doubt that they're all back next year. Who do you think returns to Toronto next year and who do you think is elsewhere? Well, first, have you all heard the stat? Have you all heard the Toronto stat that I'm sure most Maple Leafs fans have heard it by now? It shocked me when I heard it the first, the second, and the third time. The Buffalo Sabres, who famously have not made the playoffs in 14 years, have double the playoff series wins that the Maple Leafs do this century. Oh, just kill them.
Starting point is 00:14:16 I mean, stop, they're already dead. Like, it's so painful. That being said, of the. we'll say the big three plus because it's it's Matthews it's Marner it's Nielander and it's probably John Tavares um I think Marner is gone do you move one of Matthews and Nielander like I hear people say it's going to look drastically different like how drastic are we going to get because I would say Marner's gone But that's understandable considering what he's going to get on the free agent market.
Starting point is 00:15:02 You've got Matthew Nyes to fill that spot. And you probably bring Tavares back at this point. But beyond that, I don't know. I don't know if I'm getting super crazy with that roster. I think Matthew's a Nielander back. And they're going to try and build around those two guys. I think Marner is absolutely gone. And Tavaris is basically begging the team to resign him with his comments so far.
Starting point is 00:15:27 but what kind of hometown discount will he give the team? How badly does he really want to stay there? That will determine, I think, whether he returns or not. I think if he comes back at a hometown discount, I think they'd be happy to have him back, but he's going to have to leap some money on the table. At his point in his career, does he want to do that? Maybe he does.
Starting point is 00:15:47 Maybe he doesn't. But I think Martin's definitely gone. I think Neelander and Matthews is the, there'll be the core two going forward. I think everybody comes Go ahead, Haley. I was saying really fast. I think everyone comes back
Starting point is 00:16:02 besides Mitch Marner today, Chris Johnson, who does such a great job covering the NHL, posted a couple of quotes, and Mitch said at the end of the season exit interviews that he loved his time in Toronto. And the way that I take that, that is past tense,
Starting point is 00:16:15 and I've talked to a lot of players and whenever they were kind of about to leave, that's how they talk. And again, people can say what they want, but I feel like the leaves will at the same time, they don't want to spend that money on him. It's going to be a lot of money to spend like some people or even saying like 14 million he might be wanting.
Starting point is 00:16:33 So again, like you don't want to spend that money on somebody again who just isn't going to produce what you need specifically on that team. They need younger talent. I think it's so interesting to talk about Mitch Marner leaving. I do think I agree with you all. I think this is the odd man out. You know, with what he can get right now on the market, I think he goes.
Starting point is 00:16:53 I obviously I don't think Toronto is interested in doing the same thing over again and getting the same results. I'll be interesting. It's so interesting to me how people, I've heard people say like, well, we don't want Martin. He can't get it done. A hundred point player can't get it done. Now, I get the logic. Well, he's not getting it done in the postseason. Well, no, it's not the core one.
Starting point is 00:17:16 It's the core four and it's actually 20. And so I don't know. I think he probably is ready to shake that. narrative. I do think it's going to be culture shock for a guy who has only ever been in Toronto to go to any other market. Can you imagine Mitch Mark? Positively or negatively. Yeah, positively or negatively. I don't know either. I don't know. Yeah, I'm not sure. But can you, I mean, you think about where he could go, it is going to be a culture shock from a, from a media perspective, from a fan-based perspective. And I am certainly not saying there are passionate fans for every single one of these 32 teams.
Starting point is 00:17:56 I just think this is going to be a culture shock. So somebody is going to need to pay him the money just in case he needs a little help on the side. I think it's going to be big. There's talk about him maybe coming to Anaheim because they've got so much cap space. They could literally give him anything he wants. You talk about culture shock. Go from Toronto to Anaheim where they have like two beat reporters, you know, covering the team and there's no media pressure.
Starting point is 00:18:23 There's no media coverage of the Anaheim duck. So something like that, I would be really curious to see if that, does that free him up? Does that make him, you know, without the pressure? Is he going to be a better player? Or is he, as you said, culture shock? Is he like, what did I sign up for? What is this?
Starting point is 00:18:39 You know, I think about him in Nashville. I'm certainly not saying Nashville's going to go out and get him. If I was Mitch Marner and I saw what Nashville did to last season, UFOs, I'd be like, no, thank you. But just for, perspective, I'm like, here in Nashville, Mitch Marner can walk around. Nobody is going to pay a lick of attention to him.
Starting point is 00:18:57 Because Dolly Parton lives here, y'all. We don't care. And I think that's got to be so weird for him. Does he want that? Does he want to live somewhere with anonymity? Does he want to live somewhere where there are three beat reporters? Does he want to live somewhere where he is not the puppy that gets kicked every time something doesn't go on? It's so interesting to me, you know, yes, in in the checkbook, yes, in, you know, on the ice.
Starting point is 00:19:23 But what does he want off the ice? I think a really good team that's going to be suiting if he does, you know, if he doesn't go back to Toronto would be the Philadelphia Flyers. I think that this is a team that is in kind of like the bottom of the bottom of the rebuild, but you're on the up and up. And again, Philadelphia is a big market. And while it's not the same as Toronto, I feel like at the same time that he would adapt really well to this type of environment in Philadelphia.
Starting point is 00:19:47 So that could be a team that potentially could use him. I mean, they definitely need a player like him with the lack of talent that they have. And he could also help some of the younger guys on the team since Philadelphia right now, mostly their roster is like 24 and under. So again, having someone like Mitch Marner would be beneficial. And I feel like they would spend the money on him. They got rid of a lot of talent. How soon do you think he wants to win it?
Starting point is 00:20:12 Like, you know, you know next season. Like if I were him next season, I want to. to be the guy lifting the Stanley Cup. I wonder how much does that weigh in? Or is he going to be patient and say, you know what, I want to go to an Anaheimer. I want to go to a Philadelphia because I know they're headed in the right direction. I think there's, I'd be fascinated to hear what he is thinking. I think even though if he wants to win the cup, would he accept less money to do so? And that's what it comes down to. You don't think you would? No. No, I don't. This is his big chance. This is when all the stars align. I mean,
Starting point is 00:20:47 There's talk that he's getting 13 and a half, $14 million AV as part of this deal. If he waits even, even if he signs like a two or three year deal like a bridge deal, he won't get that kind of, you know, that kind of a good seven, eight year contract for that kind of money if he waits. So I think this is it. This is when he sets up his family for like two generations just by signing this contract. And there will be teams lining up to do just that because he, like, they said during the broadcast during the, during the game, players like him do not go to free agency. Like, it's just such a rarity to have a player like that. And he's like he's a phenomenal talent. And postseason, postseason numbers as they are, everybody wants a Ferrari, but they're.
Starting point is 00:21:45 there is a reason you only see a few of them driving around on the highway is because they just they're just aren't a ton of away. But he's somebody like whether it be Anaheim to get them to the cap floor, that's another thing. All the teams that are on the cap floor are going to come knocking. And there will be there will be one or two contenders because there may be teams that don't have money now, but there will be teams that try to position themselves to have money to be able to throw at him as well. So don't be surprised if you see a few teams, Boston, that that tries to maneuver a bit to be able to fit him on their books.
Starting point is 00:22:32 I do think this is where Carolina is going to be interesting. If Carolina advances, if Carolina can win the Stanley Cup, is that going to affect the narrative that you, this is your one, shot to go out and get the guy. I think that's what makes this so interesting. Timing is everything. And they took their shot earlier this year and it didn't work out. Maybe this is their chance to try again. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:56 I don't know. Are they going to be a little gun shy after what happened with Nico Ranton? We shall see. At least have a discussion with him, right? Do you want to play here? Yeah. Well, even like, my thing is like if Carolina does really well without that one elite unicorn, maybe some other teams are going to be like,
Starting point is 00:23:13 We're going to go with what we can afford and what we've got. And maybe, I don't know, it'll be interesting to see if that does anything to the Mitch Martner market. We definitely need Hurricane Stars now. Change of pace. Change of pace. All right. We've got more to get to here on the squad show, the coaching carousel, the GM carousel.
Starting point is 00:23:33 Still turning. We're going to talk a little bit more about that. Plus, we'll have our picks for the two playoff series coming up next. So some news out of. Boston that I think kind of surprised a few people, but Don Sweeney signing a two-year contract extension as the Bruins GM. I was a little surprised by this. What are your thoughts? Yeah, contentious press conference at the end of the season, very defensive, mixed messages from him and ownership with ownership saying, oh, yeah, we're going to be a playoff team soon
Starting point is 00:24:17 and him kind of saying, well, no, no, about that. We're going to be that. but yeah, a little surprised, a little interested. I think he's getting one year to kind of prove he can get this team in the right direction and course for where they're going. If that doesn't happen, then I think he'll be gone after one season. I did not expect that at all, especially the way this season ended in the press conference. I have a lot of Bruins friends, and they all blew up my phone saying, you know, what is this team doing? And I think it's one of those decisions where, in my humble opinion, being an outsider that doesn't really watch a lot of Bruins hockey, it seems to me that they're kind of setting up this team not to do well again for next season. So that way they get maybe a better draft pick.
Starting point is 00:25:03 That's just the way that I take it. Not only the fact that the roster has some very big flaws, which are a Don Sweeney product. But also, how about the fact that the coach that was fired during. the season goes to the St. Louis Blues, leads them to a playoff spot, and has them up until the end of the season playing as one of the best teams in the NHL. I kind of wonder if maybe there is a little bit of, hey, this was our guy from upper management. How come he's somewhere else now and he's as successful as he's ever been? This is fascinating because you only get so many coaches to kick to the curb as a general manager before you yourself are the one that gets shown the door.
Starting point is 00:25:55 And this is not a short process for this Boston team. So how much of a leash does he get to kind of finish his work or how impatient does ownership get the longer it goes? I don't think Don Sweeney's going to see it through to the end. I don't. Seth, I liked all of your compliments, by the way, towards Montgomery and what he's done for the blues. I like that. I feel like I had to.
Starting point is 00:26:27 It tastes like vinegar, doesn't it? Taste like vinegar. I was like, continue on and on. 12-game winning streak, franchise history. Yeah, yeah, we saw it. We saw it. Yeah. I think the fact that it's only a two-year extension speaks volumes.
Starting point is 00:26:45 I mean, one-year extension is a lame duck that is. didn't want to go there. This is the bare minimum extension that they would be willing to sign him to. Yeah, this is a you have, you have one more chance. Like we're giving you one more chance to dig out of this. You have one very brief window to reverse a narrative and to move things into different direction. And that's difficult to do. It, that is a, it's a big ask for this specific situation. It's a short leash. And I think the seat is already hot in Boston, even with the signing of this extension. So we got four teams left, two series now.
Starting point is 00:27:29 I want to ask each of you who you're picking to win the Eastern Conference Final, the Western Conference Final, and how many games you think it's going to go. We'll do ladies first. So, Anne, why don't we start with you? This causes me a lot of anxiety, y'all. I hate this. I'll do it, but under duress, because, you know, do you go with your head? Do you go with your heart?
Starting point is 00:27:54 All right. Western Conference, Dallas versus Edmonton. Honestly, I'm going Edmonton. Why Dallas is probably going to walk all over him. But if they can rattle Ottinger just a smidge, if they can kind of get him off his game, I think Edmund can do it. I'm not as concerned about the goaltending. I think Stuart Skinner with two shutouts. I think that's a big confidence builder.
Starting point is 00:28:22 I'm just going, I'm going Edmonton, Eastern. I'm going Carolina on vibes, y'all. Give me the team that you have to look up their roster. Haley? So I'm going to go opposite of Ann on everything. You are so smart, Haley. But I'm going to go with Dallas in six. I think this is nice.
Starting point is 00:28:45 And the last year, I actually predicted the stars to win the cup, and obviously they did it. But I think Dallas has so much talent. I feel like we're not talking about how this is kind of one of their last seasons that they can go on this kind of cup run. So again, I'm a huge Jake Audenger fan. We all know that. So Dallas and Six. Panthers in seven, as I said earlier in the episode, I think that this is going to be a really tough series. I think Carolina, I mean, we're forgetting about, you know, Brett Burns are so many players on this Carolina team that I personally like.
Starting point is 00:29:12 However, at the end of the day, Florida played phenomenal in game seven against the leaves. And I feel like if it goes to a seven, Florida is going to be the team that comes out on top. Eddie? I'm going to pick same teams. I'm going to flip number of games. I'm picking Dallas and Florida as well. But I'm going to say Dallas in seven and Florida in six. Obviously, I hate the Edmonton Oilers as a team who's lost to them four straight years in the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:29:38 So I'll be rooting hard for Dallas. I picked against Edmonton every round, and they've proved me wrong every round. So this is not looking good for me. But I'm going to stick with it. I just got to believe Dallas is depth scoring. They've just got so many players that can come at you in waves. And I've been totally shocked at what Edmonton has done with their secondary scoring. Is this the point where it finally runs out?
Starting point is 00:30:01 We'll see. But the Miko Ranton factor, I think that in the rematch, I think that's a big swing. Florida, they're just a machine. been there, done that, and we saw the additions they had of Brad Marchand and Seth Jones are paying dividends already. Well coached, just know what they're doing. So I'll say Florida stars in the finals. As much as I would like to see the Rantin'n and Bowl, I think we see the rematch.
Starting point is 00:30:29 I am going with the Oilers to beat the Stars in seven. And I'm going to also go with the Panthers to beat the Hurricanes in seven. lengthy series, overtime games, physical games, intense games. But I think we get the rematch. And I think the Oilers take it this time. Ooh, first Canadian base team since 1993, if it happens. I've got to go with the stars in six and the Panthers in seven is how I'm seeing it.
Starting point is 00:31:04 I think we're going to see some really good hockey. And I am looking forward to seeing how this all plays out. Can't believe we are now at the conference finals.
