I am joined today by our distinguished panel, Tom Callahan of Lockdown Mammoth now. We have an official name, Chukri writes of Lockdown NHL Game Night and Kyle Carr of Lockedon Ducks. And gentlemen, I want to start us off with this.
Starting point is 00:01:36 We're midway through the second round of the playoffs right now. What has been the biggest surprise to you so far in the two rounds that we've been through in the Stanley Cup playoffs? Everybody was going to jump in there. Okay. I was going to go ahead. I was just like, great. I was a little bit patiently. Go ahead, Tom.
Starting point is 00:01:57 So you know what? I've got to say honestly for me, and this is going to sound weird, but it is Dallas. And the reason Dallas is so big for me is because I felt like Dallas had a lot of question marks hanging over them coming in. They were on the absolute worst stretch of any team entering the playoffs. And so it's natural to wonder, hey, are they going to pull themselves out of the funk, especially against a really difficult Colorado team? Somehow Colorado was the thing that started their engine. Plus, with the injuries they had going on, you wondered how everybody was going to fit in the lineup. and then Miko Ranton in Don's a Cape and tights and play Superman, you know, in Victory Green and just has this team really going.
Starting point is 00:02:39 Jake Ottinger, who you knew was going to be good, has done everything they've needed him to do. But I really didn't know if Dallas was going to get out of the first round, period. I have my doubts, and they're proven me wrong. well for me i got to go with a guy whose name starts with Connor and his first four letters of his last thing begins with the letters h e l l and that man has been absolute hell on the road and not in a good way and as of this recording he is still on a win the streak on the road, getting back to what now three years now, give a take, in the postseason. I've never seen a goaltender who has struggled mightily on the road the way that he has.
Starting point is 00:03:29 I'm going to be honest. And it's got to a point for me where it's like, we're talking about it. And I'm going to keep banging on the damn drum until he finally addresses it because that is literally the one thing that is holding back Winnipeg, especially in this series against the Dallas Stars. Because again, as of this recording, I mean, this results are something to change, but kind of hell of buck. His road yips are just like, my God, what's made you terrified of the road? Is it, is it midnight, midnight road after the Cleaver?
Starting point is 00:03:59 Or is it, or is it like the late night Elm Street? Like, I don't know. Tell me, please. What's going on? And why does that only seem to happen in the playoffs? Because during the regular season, he's fine on the road. It's not like his splits are so dramatic during the regular season. I feel like we need to pull a Hoosiers.
Starting point is 00:04:18 We need to pull a Hoosiers with him. Take them out. Measure the gold crease. Measure the net. Hey, man, this is still six by four. It's not any different. The rank is still the same size. You know, measure the puck form.
Starting point is 00:04:33 Puck is still the same size. Yeah. Yeah. It's wild. I don't know if he just gets so used to that whiteout up in Winnipeg that. When there's colors in the stands, it, like, messes with this depth perception or what, but it's terrifying how scary here. Like, I don't know how Winnipeg Jet fans can even survive through the postseason with having a Vesna candidate goaltender the entire season. And then they're just getting lit up.
Starting point is 00:04:59 St. Louis lit them up. Now Dallas is lighting them up. And then they go home and it's like a totally different beast stepped into the net. So it's definitely an up and down with him. And what do you do? I mean, if you're the Winnipeg Jets, you're not trading the guy. Like, how do you, how do you over, you send him to a sports psychologist if he continues to struggle on the road? Like, how do you address this issue?
Starting point is 00:05:24 Because financially and contractually, you're committed to Connor Hellebuck for the foreseeable future. And he taught. 31 years old. And as you mentioned, he is locked up for the foreseeable future. I mean, how do you begin to resolve an issue that is now become psychological rather than physical? I mean, there is part of me that kind of wants to go the route of, look, you are just telling mind games, but I don't even think that's going to work. But, and I'm trying not to sound too harsh, because I've been beating on this man's drum for over the last couple of weeks,
Starting point is 00:06:02 over a lockdown NHO game night whenever I get the chance. But kind of hell of buck, I forgot the X. what the hell? Like, what is it going to take for you to actually snap out of the, it's not a funk anymore. Like people who are trying to just, he's just in the bad funk on the road. No, it's a trend. It's a trend. How do you buck a trend by somehow putting an absolute stop to it and actually showing up on the road?
Starting point is 00:06:28 Well, there are 18 other guys who can help him win a game. If Winnipeg would come out with a four-goal outburst, you could probably limp one over the line. They got to help them out at some point. You sure? Because we've seen kind of hell of give a five goals this postseason already. So I'm not even sure if four goals is going to be enough. Yeah. Offensively.
Starting point is 00:06:49 Now, the one advantage the Jets do have is they have home ice advantage as long as they're in the playoffs. So in theory, if they win every home game, they don't have to win on the road. Oh, God. But giving up that split to Dallas, I think. It's ruined them. I don't know if they can climb back. They're not beginning to be perfect at home. You're not wrong on what you said, but it's like, it's just, it's like a lame duck excuse.
Starting point is 00:07:15 Like, when all your home games, right? Have we ever seen a standing cup champion with all their home games and lose all their games on the road? Not that I mean, I don't think I've ever seen anything like it. At some point, you have to win on the road. That's why I'm like, hey, Connor, um, listen, and I made a video about this, about a couple of weeks ago now. And I said, listen, Connor Hella is the NHL's Payne Manning. great in the regular season, but for some reason he can't win in the Seneca Plus
Starting point is 00:07:42 and now he can't win on the road. Something that Payman, I couldn't do at one point in his playoff career in his hall of him career. So it's like, hey, Connor, you know, you know the song, hit the road, Jack, and don't you come back no more, no more, no more, no more. Like, you need Connor to not hit the road
Starting point is 00:08:00 and actually come back. Come back to Earth, please, thank you. And how would- You break. How would not winning a Stanley Cup affect how he's viewed by history? I mean, there are some great goalies out there. Henrik Lundquist comes to mind. Did everything.
Starting point is 00:08:19 Won an Olympic gold medal, won, you know, all kinds of tournaments. Never won a Stanley Cup. And it seems to put those players just like a little half-notch lower in a lot of people's minds when looking back at their career. at least Henrik Lungoist could win a game on the road. That was never a question for Henrik Lankwist. And I watched this entire career in New York. Like, it is a great question, though, Gil.
Starting point is 00:08:48 And I want to hear your thoughts on Kyle and Tom. I'm not taking up the space and time. But I think it certainly does impact his legacy a bit. Does it make him like any less great? No. But listen, Roberto Lulongo is one of the greatest goaltors of all time. But there is that, yeah, but he didn't win the standing cup, but he's still an all-time great in a goaltender.
Starting point is 00:09:10 So I don't want to have to look at kind of hell about in that light. But if it gets to that point, if he retires without having to have a one a cup, then I have no choice but to. I think at the end of the day, you know, whether it's quarterbacks in the NFL, pitchers in baseball, and goaltenders in hockey, if you don't have a championship, yes, that's something that's always going to be missing from your resume. and like Gil says, I think it does put you that half notch below the people who have won a championship,
Starting point is 00:09:40 although there's a converse of that coin where sometimes I think people who have won titles get elevated a little more, perhaps than they should in some cases. At the end of the day, if Hellebuck continues to put up the numbers he's always put up, is he a Hall of Famer? Yeah, I think so. Is he the best goal he ever? No. Is Roberto Luonga the best goal he ever? No.
Starting point is 00:10:00 But doesn't make them not a. Hall of Famer. So, you know, the good news for Hellebuck is I think he's got some very good solid years in front of him. And I'm not writing off this Dallas series yet either. I really do believe the Jets can make a dent. They were the best defensive team in the NHL for two years running now. So they've got to find a way to lock down the Dallas offense and then start putting the puck
Starting point is 00:10:27 in the net. And if they can do that, they can still win this series. They can get past this. And we can bury all this talk. about Connor Hallibuck not winning on the road. He's just got to win one or two, right? And then psychologically, hopefully that the yips go away because he proves to himself that he can do it.
Starting point is 00:10:48 But we'll see. We'll see how this ends up playing out going forward. All right, we have got a lot more to discuss. The coaching carousel is in motion, including Kyle's Anaheim Ducks, actually making a controversial hire. We'll talk about that and a lot more coming up on this week's NHL Squad Show. Today's episode is brought to you by your friends at Fandul.
Starting point is 00:11:16 The NBA playoffs are in full swing and every night delivers highlight-worthy performances, major momentum shifts, and can't miss moments. Make every moment more with Fandul official sports betting partner of the NBA. So the coaching carousel is in motion. Kyle, I'm going to start with you because your team did make a hire.
Starting point is 00:12:33 Joel Quenville, the new head coach of the Anaheim Ducks, a three-time Stanley Cup, winner, but some off-ice issues that caused him to be suspended from the NHL for a few years. He was reinstated, what, about a year ago, and now he is coming back with the Ducks. Kyle, your initial thoughts on this hire? A lot of ups and down feelings about this. I think it's insane that the Ducks took this gamble to jump in and make this. this higher. For those unaware of what happened, there was an issue in 2010 while he was the Blackhawks head coach and a player, Kyle Beach, had an issue with the video coach and it was brought
Starting point is 00:13:21 to his attention, but they were in their playoff run. So they kind of said, well, we'll look at it later. And from what it sounds like, Quinville thought that because there were higher ups in the meeting that it was being taken care of and he didn't understand the severity of what the issue was. well in 2021 this comes to light he gets he steps away from the florida panthers and now he is back that it was last summer that the n hl said he could be interviewed for hire but he still had to get permission to officially come back so it sounds like that the the ducks did get that permission and a big thing that came out is that him uh joel quinville himself and the head staff of anaheim have talked to Kyle Beach and got what sounds like is the approval of him to have him be reinstated.
Starting point is 00:14:08 Now, when it comes to the on-eye stuff, I'm absolutely excited. This is a stellar coach, the second most winning coach behind the bench. He has a 61.2 win percentage in his career out of, he's won 2,165 points out of a possible 3,536. So he's got a phenomenal, phenomenal career as a head coach. He's been coaching as long as my sister's been alive. And this is a young squad that's very reminiscent of the Chicago Blackhawks of old. And now with these young defensemen, the young forwards, I think he's going to bring a big jump. And Anaheim's going to be a pretty terrifying place for the road teams to come into.
Starting point is 00:14:55 Tom? So, first of all, I, I want to say it and Kyle, I respect the position that you may not be able to say it. Sexual assault was the problem. Kyle Beach was sexually assaulted by a member of the Black Hawk staff. It was swept under the rug. That's why Bowman lost his job. That's why Quenville lost his job.
Starting point is 00:15:16 That's why other people lost their job. So that was what the issue was. So this is a big deal. As an outside observer and when I was, was with Nashville. Quenville was the coach of the Blackhawks. I talked to them a lot. It seemed like we played the Blackhawks in the playoffs every year. We were always going against them. I still had nightmares about Nashville's first round loss to Chicago and Marion Hosa's non five-minute major call. But the guy's a brilliant coach, right? There's no getting around that. He's a winning
Starting point is 00:15:55 coach. He's a very smart hockey man. The question I have and other people will have is, if something like that were to occur again, because this is the real world, this is real life, things happen, has he changed? And so far, the right things have been said. Apparently, the right things have been done. And Kyle Beach signing off on it would seem to indicate that. time will tell if it's the right move or not. On the ice, I'm sure it's going to be fantastic for the ducks. It's going to have a huge impact on that club.
Starting point is 00:16:31 The only thing I can hope for is that Joel Quinville really has changed, has learned from this, and understands that this is not something you sweep under the damn rug. And that's how I feel about it. And I just hope that that's understood moving forward. And I hope he has changed. I really do. Actions definitely speak louder than words.
Starting point is 00:16:51 And a lot, was said during his press conference he made a lot of promises to the fan base and to players and what was pretty surprising to me is how much support from the players he's gotten it sounds like a lot of like ryan strome said his phone was getting lit up the entire day of people calling and congratulating him in a sense saying like you've got a great coach coming like it's going to be awesome to play there you're going to have so much fun like he's a good person so i'm hoping that he did take the proper actions and that the ducks are going to get the best version of Joel Quinville not only as a coach but as a human being and that's going to just pay dividends
Starting point is 00:17:30 for the confidence and the structure and all around like safety and feelings around the team that they're all going to feel like they can be themselves and be heard and it's just going to skyrocket on the ice. Is you okay? Personally, I have a problem with it. and it's not so much as to just the sheer nature and the seriousness of Joel Quimville coming back into the H.L. Because I agree with you, Tom, for me personally, and Kyle, this is no shout at you personally. But when you're in a position that you're in, especially when it comes to this kind of situation, we cannot sugarcoat it.
Starting point is 00:18:15 Like, I'm not going to triggercoat it. Like, Kyle Beach was sexually assaulted. And when it comes to matters like this, for me, it's not even a conversation about politics or difference of opinion. Like we're talking about someone whose trust was violated. And for him to come back into the NHL, look, congratulations to him getting back into the league. But I can't help but to think about people who were actually triggered, so to speak. And I'm talking about people who are victims of sexual assault. And there is one that comes to mind who works as part of the hockey meeting for Sportsnet.
Starting point is 00:18:56 Many of you may know her story of Ailish Fafar. She works for Sportsnet. And she actually has a tweet that's pinned on her profile. And for people like her, whether you're male or female, this is a very difficult conversation to have. And for me, like, when the Ducks decided that they were going to hire Joe Quinville, my first thought was, did Joe Quentinville truly learned his lesson,
Starting point is 00:19:22 or did he, or was he just desperately hungry to get back into the league? Because let's face it, no one's questioning his credentials on the ice. He's got Hollywood and credentials, no if, and to butt.
Starting point is 00:19:33 But we're talking about a man who knew about the sexual assault that took place and swept it under the rug. That, for me, from a moral standpoint, it's very difficult for me
Starting point is 00:19:43 to overlook and very difficult for me to just simply move move off off and in which that look I'm not one that's going to sit here and say I'm going to be angry forever but people who are victims of this don't get to simply say hey you know what
Starting point is 00:19:57 I'm just going to forget about it pretending that never happened and I sincerely hope that they did talk to Cal Beach about this sincerely because this is about someone whose life was forever alter based to what happened back in 2010 no doubt
Starting point is 00:20:13 there is a lot of controversy here we'll see how it ends up playing out in the future, but the Anaheim Ducks obviously made a controversial decision, and we'll see how it plays itself out. All right, we'll talk more about the coaching carousel and a little bit more about the playoffs, all that coming up on this week's NHL squad. So got to ask about some other coaching candidates and one of the hot candidates out there right now, Rick Tocke, Shukri, let's start with you, because I know that your Bruins are kind of. kind of rumored to be interested.
Starting point is 00:20:57 If they are, and I sincerely hope that they are, you need to move fast. Don't sit around, flirt with the, flirt with the man, like you're flirting with someone that you're interested in at the bar or a restaurant or out somewhere, make a move. Show him that you're really interested and get him in the office. Now, I understand that he just did TV work with TNT. I understand that.
Starting point is 00:21:19 I'm not sure how long it's going to run for, but you need to get Rick talking in a, soon as possible if you're truly interesting because listen, the Bruins are not going to be the only team that's interesting in Target. It's going to be other teams like the Flyers, whose team keeps popping up in the news as to they're ruined with Rick Tocket.
Starting point is 00:21:36 Maybe Danny Breyer and Keith Jones Bickaroo for Rick Tocket. If you're the Boston Bruins, you need a head coach and you need Rick Tocket. You need someone that, yes, right now this team is in a retool, but this team, if they're all healthy and if they all are back to
Starting point is 00:21:52 playing out a productive level where where they have played in the past. This team should be a playoff team next year. And as if, of course, Jeremy Swaman actually remembers how to play goaltender at a high NHL caliber level. But as far as the head coach is concerned, you need to absolutely be more aggressive and make the move if you're truly interested in Rick Tocke and make the move now. Do you think Shukri that Swayman's performance would have been at a higher level
Starting point is 00:22:21 if they had kept Montgomery on as the head coach? To be honest, I don't even think this was a Montgomery issue. It really wasn't. It really wasn't. The thing that angered me more than anything last summer was the fact that this contract situation extended into the beginning of training camp. And it was a very uncomfortable situation at the start of training camp for the Boston Bruins. Brad Mawshan pretty much was delivered subliminal messages via the Boston media at that point. Jim Montgomery was not particularly two.
Starting point is 00:22:54 thrilled about it and whatnot. So for me personally, it had nothing to do with Jim Montgomery. It had everything to do with Jerry Swain saying that, oh, I want to reset the market. Well, congratulations. Not only that you attempt to reset the market, but your play didn't back up the fact that you held out for an X amount of time and missed the start of the season. So for me, it had nothing to do with Jim Montgomery has everything to do with the ego of Jeremy Swing himself. You know, and I know we got to run through some seats here. I want to throw a couple of comments off that's going to derail the Boston thing. But number one, what is Dubis doing just kind of heading off to the worlds and saying,
Starting point is 00:23:34 I'll deal with this when I get back? Good point. What are you doing, buddy? Pittsburgh, of all teams, should be super focused on getting their coaching search nailed down. And Kenny Holland is close to becoming the GM of the Kings. I know we're not talking about coaching, but that's a huge get for the Kings if they get Holland, if he still has some magic in that old silk cap. but I can't believe what the penguins are doing.
Starting point is 00:23:57 I think the flyers are almost reactively waiting to see who Tocot picks before they get somebody. And I agree with Shukri, if you're Boston, and this is your guy, slide a piece of paper across the desk at him and get him to sign it. Would be a good detail. Getting back to the playoffs real quick, anybody surprised at the Capitol's struggles in round two and in particular that Alexander O'Ber, Bettskin has been relatively quiet. I know he scored a goal in their last game, but he's been quiet in round two. No.
Starting point is 00:24:34 I'm not because, listen, if anything else, and I talked about it on the last episode of, and it liked on NHO game that I was on, that Carolina's system is predicated on shutting down really good offensive players who are impact players. And you've seen this time and time again, like, look, You got to get credit where it's due.
Starting point is 00:24:57 The job that Jacob Slavin has done, outstanding. The job that Seth Jarvis has done in terms of the defensive side of the puck, outstanding. The job that Brent Burns has done in this series, outstanding. Like, you got to give credit to the system that Brad Brindamore has instituted and guys who have been playing in that system for a while. You're seeing it shut down a really good Washington capital team that, listen, let's face it. Yes, Alex Oveshkin has struggled offensively up until game number four where he did score. Yes, Connor McMichael has not been much of a factor in this series.
Starting point is 00:25:29 Neither has Dylan Strom. Neither has Tom Wilson. Oh, yeah, Tom Wilson, maybe in game, too, but that's, but that's it. So I think the credit has to be given where it's due. And I think you got to give the credit to Robbrenmore in the way that the guys are playing, especially at the four-go, but it's starting with the blue line. You have not mentioned Frederick Anderson. Oh, he's been phenomenal.
Starting point is 00:25:49 He's been absolutely phenomenal, yeah. He really has. I said out of all the series, I feel like this is probably, the biggest goalie battle right now between all the series that's still active between Logan Thompson, Freddie Anderson. They've been playing really shut down hockey. This series reminds me a lot of when the Islanders used to have their success. And it's just, it's not the most exciting hockey to watch, but it's, they're coming out with that win. They're going to make sure that they get success at the end of the game, but it's just not going to be high flying and crazy. And
Starting point is 00:26:21 unlike the Evanton Vegas series where I don't know, what happened to the Golden Knights. I feel like they've just disappeared off the face of the planet. And the oilers are terrifying right now. Like with McDavid and Dry Saddle going, but then Corey Perry, all the depth that has been scoring for Evanton, that is,
Starting point is 00:26:40 I saw someone saying like it's like going from your nephew's baptism to a strip club between those two games because the energy is just so different. And it's like, it's true that like, they're night and day on the energy that you see in those. series. Tom, one of the comparison.
Starting point is 00:26:58 Yeah. That really is. I mean. That's a heck of an analogy. Tom, I wanted to ask you, in your opinion, is there something different about this Toronto team this year that, you know, they've had so much regular season success, come up short in the playoff so many times. Do you see something different about the Maple Leafs this year that leads you to
Starting point is 00:27:22 believe maybe this is the year for the year? Ben. I felt like they were better set in net than they have been in several years. And Stolars just kind of stepped into the spotlight and said, all right, this is my net. Now he's hurt. That doesn't help. Austin Matthews not scoring right now. It doesn't help. They need scoring if they're going to get into round three because all of a sudden the Panthers have figured out there the Panthers. And in that last, well, by the time folks see this, it's going to be two games ago. But playoff Bob is back. And when he made that glove save on Matthews, and I think, I'll be honest with you, I think Matthews has hurt.
Starting point is 00:28:00 I've been hearing a lot of scuttle butt from the folks I've been talking to. He's not 100%. We won't know what it is till after the playoffs, but he's got to find a way to start scoring. They need to get everybody involved in the offense here. Are they good enough to win the cup this year on paper? Yes, if healthy. But right now, they're struggling. And Florida, they just, they have their chip back on their shoulder now. And that should worry everyone left in the playoffs. I agree because, I agree because, you know, on Tom's point,
Starting point is 00:28:32 and I'm going to add to your point now, Tom, because the turning point, you see, I've always been a believer in specific moments in sports that you could actually point to and say, ha, this actually was a defining moment right here right now. Toronto's up 3 to 1 in game number 3. And then all of a sudden, click. Florida became Florida again.
Starting point is 00:28:55 And they haven't looked back. And I think the biggest question for the Maple Leafs right now is not just as it pertains to Austin Matthews and his ability to score. What are they going to do in terms of an answer in regards to Florida's physicality? Because what they're doing is flicking the puck in the air and dumping it deep and having Toronto's forwards go chase the puck. And what they're doing is they're pounding everything in sight. This is Florida Panthers hockey. and the Maple Leafs, I got bad news. They haven't had an answer.
Starting point is 00:29:29 And Max Domi, listen, that was a real moronic move on what he did to end game number four. But that's not going to win you the series. The Panthers, all that all they worry about is winning, getting the four wins and advances to the conference finals. And that's something that the Maple is going to have to figure out in terms of matching or at least having an answer to Florida's physicality and forechecking.
Starting point is 00:29:50 Can we agree on one thing real quick, though, $5,000 is the maximum fine. That's like for an NHL player, that's like... Yeah, it's like a $2 fine for the rest of us. They've got to be doing something to increase the impact of those fines. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:10 Well, it's like you really want to take a mess with a player, take them out of the lineup. And I feel like that's what speaks more volumes to players than just giving them a cash penalty that they're not even going to really be focused on. But if you take them out of the, a lineup, that stress, the anxiety of not helping your team. Like, that's where it picks up.
Starting point is 00:30:28 And someone who hasn't been helping their team is Mitch Marner. And I don't know where he goes in the second round, but it's, he's just kind of dried up at the well. And then you got on the other side, someone took up their protein shaker and added their anti-leaf potion. And that's Brad Marchand. He is back doing what he does best when it comes to playing against the Maple Leafs. Well, let's see if he can market that potion, but I have a future reference.
Starting point is 00:30:53 But yeah, good point with that. Well, I want to thank everyone for making the squad show your first listen today for your second listen.
