They dive into how many times they've given up goals in the first few minutes of games and why that's a trend they need to stop. So, Pat, the Penguins make it 7-2 and 1 in their last 10.
games by coming back to beat the LA Kings in overtime by a score of three to two.
And they very much earned this way.
They were the better team for, I would say, 55 of the 60 minutes.
They generated a lot more offense than teams usually do against the Kings.
When we were previewing this game, we were talking about how stingy the Kings
have been defensively this year.
And you look at some of their recent games.
This was the first time that the Kings allowed more than two goals in a game since November
25th, when the San Jose sharks of all teams put up seven goals on them. Since then, it's been
either one goal or two. Penguins were the first team to score three or more again since the
sharks. So really nice time by the Penguins and that aspect. There's one main negative that I do
want to point out to start the show. I promise people, the rest of the show is going to be positive.
The Penguins do have to do a lot better of a job starting games on time. You can't be giving up
goals in the first minute, first 10 minutes, first three minutes. Heck, honestly, the first five minutes.
They've been starting games way too slowly throughout the year.
And Bob Grove put out this really great stat.
Penguins' story in Bob Grove, he is tremendous on social media.
If you don't know who he is, you're doing it wrong.
But in 33 games this season, the Penguins have allowed a goal in the opening minute three times,
in the opening two minutes, five times, and the opening three minutes nine times.
So you combine all of that.
That is 17 times in 33 games.
The Penguins have allowed an opening goal in the first three minutes.
That's not good enough, Pat.
They need to do a lot better of starting the game on time and also getting early leads
because you can't just concede goals and then having to come back every single game.
For sure.
There's there's always going to be room for me to give this team credit for battling back
and erasing leads and sticking to it because that's what good teams do,
regardless of the situation, they find a way to win.
However, I would rather see them put themselves in a position.
to just win a game rather than have to respond and come back in a game. But all that said,
to further your stat, because I looked this one up just to confirm it, because I had my suspicions,
especially after the preview episode yesterday, about how good the LA Kings have been. They have allowed
two or fewer goals in 10 of their previous 12 games. So the Penguins being able to put up three,
I know three goals isn't exactly an offensive explosion,
but when you're playing a team that we talked about in the LA Kings,
who play a very smart, very disciplined, 200-foot game,
putting up three goals on them is an impressive feat.
And Darcy Kemper played a great game last night
because the penguins played,
when you dig into the analytics,
they didn't really control much of the shot attempts or anything like that.
But when they had chances, they were grade A chances for the penguins last night.
And Kemper played a great game.
The penguins could have theoretically had four or five goals last night with the way they were getting offensive opportunities.
Four goals in the third period alone with the way they were playing and the amount of high danger chances they were getting.
Kemper was making save after save after say.
That's one of the best games I think I've ever seen him play in the NHL.
I mean, Rob and Sidney Crosby multiple times in that period.
Ricard Raquel hits a post.
There's a couple other massive glove saves that he made.
I was getting ready to put a tweet out after this game saying, like,
wow, the penguins flat out got goalie.
But thankfully, Matt Grislyke was able to tie it with 535 to go.
And then Rickele gets a disgusting deflection in overtime to get his 14th goal of the year.
We'll discuss Ricardo Raquel a little bit later on in the show.
But yeah, I mean, he was tremendous in that game.
But again, the way the penguins were generating against a team that says,
as stingy as the Kings, that's what has me pretty excited for these next few games,
because if you can do that against a team like the Kings,
you can definitely do that against other teams coming up here,
like the Predators who have not been good this year,
like the Flyers who aren't as good defensively,
and especially the Islanders, I mean, they're giving up chance after chance.
It feels like every game, and they have a home and home against them at the end of the month.
So that does make me hopefully a little bit more optimistic
heading in these final few games of this month,
as they're trying to really climb their way into this,
because for a time last night, they were in that final playoffs.
Obviously, Ottawa jumped them and they're a point ahead of them right now.
But they're at least inching closer to spot.
The only thing that's really their enemy right now is the games in hand.
Yeah, that's working against them right now.
But simply put, they are in the race now.
Now, we're not going to send out the hello, we're back department.
We'd like to file a claim meme yet.
But this is similar to what.
I was talking about and that I so gracefully borrowed from Adam Gretz,
there is a difference between streaks and runs.
And the penguins right now are inching even closer to being on a run rather than a streak
because they're playing very solid hockey.
They're getting wins against good opponents.
They're not just beating up on the teams in the same.
We can't even say in the same realm as them anymore because they're pointing.
out of wild cards. So we're not talking about this team as basement dwellers, but they're not just
beating up on lesser opponents. They're getting wins against quality teams, and they're doing it
in a sustainable way. They're not riding a pedi-o bender. They're not getting a bad performance
from a goalie here or an off-night from another team there. They're playing a solid,
sustainable brand of hockey.
And it's been very encouraging to watch.
Now, like you, I want to see how they end this calendar year.
They don't have to be perfect the next two weeks.
But if they come out of it, three, four games ahead.
And all of a sudden, they're right there in the mix going into 2025 for a wildcard
spot.
They might start making a believer out of me.
We might have to pull out that meme.
at that point, but I agree.
We're not there still just yet.
We still want to see how these next few weeks ago,
I know we've been saying that a lot,
but again,
they had such a poor start to the season,
and I just don't want to,
you know, completely jump to the other side of the ship.
Like, okay, you know, we're fully back.
And then they go back to playing like they were, you know,
in early to mid-November or something like that.
But they were very similar to what you said about the game in general,
about the way they started.
That applies to the season as well.
dug themselves a pretty big hole coming out of October and a little bit into November,
that now they're playing catch up.
And realistically, obviously they're right there.
They're a point out right now.
But realistically, that could be this team's undoing is that they had such a poor start
to the year.
And I hate to throw water on what has been a positive episode.
But realistically, if we're looking at this from a basic neutral point,
they had such a slow start to the season,
like they have had slow starts to games recently,
that if we're back in this position come April,
where we're going, man, they missed by one, two, three, four points.
You can look back to the start of the year and go,
well, they don't drop a couple of those early games.
We're talking about the first round right now.
Right.
I mean, they were 7, 12, and 4 to start the season.
They have lost 16 of their first 23 games.
Since then, 7, 2, and 1, they've beaten,
as you said, some great teams during the stretch.
They've beaten the Bruins, which they rarely do in Boston.
They've beaten the Canucks.
They've beaten obviously the Kings.
They've beaten the Maple Leafs.
They beat the Florida Panthers.
And while they did get a bit lucky to win that game, they still were able to beat the defending
champions.
They're not just beating these basement-dwelling teams.
No, they are being beating, excuse me, legitimate playoff teams.
And it goes back to something that you were saying a couple of minutes ago, the type,
the brand of hockey they're playing.
It's legitimate good hockey.
The process behind the wins is very much there.
They're usually out shooting teams with these wins.
They're outchancing them.
They're playing better defensively.
They're getting at least average goaltending.
They're not just on this goalie heater.
They're not on this PDO heater or any of that.
No, the process has been very much there for these last 10 games over the last,
I would say, what, three weeks?
And that's what at least has me a little bit encouraged heading into the rest of this month here.
They're not just winning games by the skin of their teeth,
getting badly outchanced, outshot, and just getting.
a couple lucky bounces here,
they're no, they're actually out playing
a lot of very good teams, including the Kings.
Yeah, you're absolutely right.
And listen, the thing that has stood out the most to me,
and I promise, I know that I have been one who,
you know what, I'm not even going to back,
I'm not even going to backpedal into this.
I'm just going to face it head on.
I know I am a Mike Sullivan defender.
I know that I have gone to bat for him on multiple occasions,
but when they had a little bit of a break before this,
this run or streak or whatever you want to call it began,
one of the things he said publicly and emphasized was the neutral zone play has to get better.
They were giving teams way too many free entries.
They were giving teams way too much room to operate in the neutral zone.
You watch the way they've played these last 10 games.
And while it's not quite the New Jersey Devils, they're not playing a neutral zone trap, they're not turning it into a quagmire, but the pressure in the neutral zone is returning.
They are not giving teams free entry into the zone.
They're forcing them to either dump the puck deep, which is giving the defenseman more opportunity to start a breakout and blunt in attack, or they're forcing them into bad decisions and getting turnovers in the news.
neutral zone, which may not lead to offense for the penguins, but at the very least,
it's keeping them from giving up grade A chances that they don't have to give up.
You couple that with they're getting average goal tending, their defensive zone structure
has slightly improved, and they're getting a lot of depth scoring.
This is a brand of hockey that is sustainable.
Now, if the depth scoring bottom falls out, we might have an issue.
but at the very least, those other fundamentals don't, as long as they remain,
you still have opportunity in each game that you play.
And if the depth scoring does bottom out at least a little bit,
that's when you need some of your stars to come and bail them out.
And speaking of the star players,
we're discussed more about that coming up here in the second segment,
because Sidney Crosby and of getting Malkin,
we're both on fire on Tuesday night.
We kind of tease that heading into the game,
like, okay, this will be a really nice time for them to finally break out of,
I guess they're, what do you, if you want to call it a mini slump,
well, they were outstanding during this game against the Kings.
And we're going to break that down for you all coming up here in the second segment.

We're back here on this episode of the Lockdown Penguins podcast.
I'm one of your host, Hunter Hodeys.
joined by my co-host Patrick Dam.
So outside of all of the annoying wrestling terms that were on the broadcast last night,
I swear, if someone did a drinking game for how many times Josh and Colby just said a wrestling
term, I think you probably would have been drunk in five minutes.
I'm like, okay, I get it.
W.W.E. Night really fine.
I know you're a big wrestling nerd.
I think I was kind of done with it about the 10-minute mark of the first period.
Hey, shout out to the champ, Colby Armstrong, though,
for bringing the winged Eagle championship belt.
onto the broadcast. Absolutely awesome. One of the thing I would just say, I just want to get this out of the way.
So we can get to the point of this segment. Absolutely loved seeing one of the hottest W.W.E. stars right now,
Braun Breaker doing the Hockey Night in Pittsburgh announcement. Shout out to Jaden Becker, the inn arena host.
I know he had to, we had him on this show last year, and he like me as a giant wrestling fan.
So I know he had to be on cloud nine all night last night.
Oh yeah, he was probably loving that.
You even had a segment on that show with Jaden.
And you guys were just spewing WW's stuff.
And I was like, okay.
Yeah, can this segment be over at this point?
But no, outside of that, again,
was fine with Intel about the 10-minute mark of the first period.
But getting back to the game itself,
Cindy Crosby and Evgeny Malkin, man.
Wow.
I mean, Crosby could have had four to five points last night
with the way he was playing.
You can tell he's still getting a bit frustrated
it because Darcy Kemper flat out robbed him on multiple occasions.
Early in the third period, I have no idea how he didn't score there.
Later on in the third period, he gets a chance right in front.
Kemper robs him there.
And you can just see him, like, looked up to the heavens.
And he's just like, what do I got to do at this point?
But then later on, he gets the primary assist on Matt Grislich's goal.
And that is a disgusting pass from Crosby.
the way that he's able to know that Grizzlik is right there again has eyes in the back of his head
beautiful dish even better finish from Grizzlic and i will say this about mac grislet
it's one game yes he did play very well in that game against the kings that actually might
have been his best game of the season he led the penguins an average game score last night which he has
not done this season yet but his underlying numbers were also very strong he passed the eye test
one game, but I'm glad he made both of us eat our words, at least for last night.
So really nice performance from him, but Crosby, he was all over the ice.
And I got to think that a explosion of goals for him is coming because sooner or later,
these chances are going to start going with how many high danger chances he's getting.
Yeah, he is looking very much like Sidney Crosby once again.
And I'm going to read this verbatim from our pal, who we,
have on every couple of Mondays for Marshall Monday. Jesse Marshall put this on Blue Sky. He ran these
numbers for us. And this is during the Penguins' recent 10 game stretch during this time.
Shot attempt percentage, 57. That's first. Goals 4 per 60, 5.11. That's second on the team.
Expected goals 4 per 60, 4.27. That's first. Expected goals for percentage, 63%.
percent, that's first. And that has been in this 10-game stretch where he has not scored a goal,
but he has been arguably the penguin's best player during this stretch. And he is generating
offense. He's generating chances, whether it's goalies making unbelievable saves or shots
getting blocked or shots for some reason going through the entire goal mouth and going wide. Eventually,
this is going to fall for him.
It's exactly what I told you, Hunter.
When it comes to players, especially players like Sidney Crosby,
I only begin to worry about them when the chances stop coming.
The chances have been there game after game after game.
My worry for players like that are when they stop generating offense and stop generating
chances.
The way Crosby's playing right now, this isn't a traditional slump.
This isn't he's playing.
playing a perimeter game.
He's not getting shots.
You don't really notice him.
He's not playing with his usual tenacity.
This is Sidney Crosby unleashed right now.
The only thing that's not there are the goals.
You talked about the Grizzlic goal.
That is vintage Sidney Crosby.
How many players do you think could make that pass?
You could probably count them on one hand.
The fact that he throws a.
backhand pass from the wall across the entire zone, it lands right on Grizzlick stick,
and he makes no, no mistake on the shot, and the penguins are back in this game.
So I love his game right now, and I have to believe if this process continues,
we're going to get an explosion of goals. He is going to start filling the net,
and the sooner it happens, the better, because we know how fiery Sidney Crosby is.
know that even in his quote unquote old age, he's still got that fire. And if he starts playing
frustrated, things might go south. Yeah. And I think you can also say the same out of getting
Malkin. I felt like he was all over the ice last night. He gets credited with the first time
goal after the Kings took the lead early. Great play by him and Michael Bunting right around the net.
And we said before that game yesterday, we wanted this to be a big Michael Bunting game. It
screamed a chaotic game because you want to get traffic in front of Kemp,
especially with how the Kings are stingy defensively.
Bunting was great.
And, you know, Gino had his legs all game long.
He almost knifed through two Kings players late in that third period.
If he was in trip there, he would have had a chance to potentially score a highlight
real goal.
He was on fire last night.
And I do feel like we're going to see another big stretch here from Gino where he's
going to rack up some points.
I definitely think a good chunk of them could be some goals.
and I think some people will be like,
okay, guys, it's fine.
Gino's all right.
But again, I said it after the auto game,
you could tell you was fighting a little bit.
Well, I feel like he's just about out of
whatever small thing this is
because he was tremendous last night.
And I figured this was coming
because he's been showing signs of it.
Oh, yeah.
Like that, like the thing with Malkin
is you can tell when he's feeling it
in the primary example was that near highlight real goal last night where he gets
trip draws the penalty when he's feeling it he does things that no maybe not no other
but few other players can do the fact that he was in he let's be real the reason he drew that
penalty is because he had those two defensemen beat that wasn't him trying to do too much
he had them beat and juggled the puck on his stick and nearly goes in and scores
a goal and because he had them beat, the defenseman had to trip them up.
So when you have Evgeny Malkin engaged like that, that is nothing but a good sign.
Because comparing it to what I said about Sid, we know when Sid plays frustrated,
he kind of, he doesn't go away from the things that work, but he almost tries to do too much
where he's forcing passes, he's shooting from everywhere, he's kind of putting himself
in less advantageous situations.
On the opposite end,
when of Gennie Malkins frustrated and not feeling it,
undisciplined type of play.
It's not as bad as his biggest detractors try to say.
He doesn't turn into a useless goon,
but you'll see him start to take runs at players.
You'll see him retaliate when people get under his skin.
But when you have this version of Gennie Malkin,
it becomes the bully that we know so well,
where he picks the puck up,
Knife through people and basically says,
get out of my way I'm scoring.
So I'm loving the way both of them are playing right now.
And once the goals start to come,
we might have to press that we're back button.
I hear you.
I definitely do.
I will say a couple of Kings players were trying to get under Gino's skin a bit last night.
He was just barking back and skating away.
And that's the other thing.
When he's feeling it, you can't get under his skin.
No.
When he's not feeling it and he's frustrated,
he's extremely easy to frustrate.
Oh, I agree.
And you saw Bunting put one of the Kings players in a headlock after they were
messed around with Gino.
I love that from Bunting because he's sticking up for one of the core players,
and especially his line mate.
But after that, Gino just skated away.
And he's like, yeah, I'm playing well tonight, man.
Nothing you're going to say or do is going to make me mad or anything like that.
But I think that's going to do it for this second second second.
Coming up to end the show, you don't know what time it is.
It's Warrior Helmet Wednesday.
Pat and I are going to give out our warrior helmet for who,
player of the last week was for the Penguins, and there's definitely a lot of very good options,
including the overtime hero on Tuesday night, Ricardo Raquel, who got his 14th goal member
people. He only had 15 goals all of last season. We're at 33 games right now. He already has
14 goals. He is playing lights out hockey right now. But before we get to that, we got to tell you
all about our final sponsor, and that is prize picks. If you love sports, you're going to

lineup. That's right people, $50 instantly with the code locked on NHL. That is price fixed.
Run your game. All right. We're back here in this episode of the Lockdown Penguins podcast.
I'm one of your host, Hunter Hodes, joined by my co-host Patrick Am. So, Pat, a lot of very good
options for the warrior helmet this past week, especially after the offensive explosion that we saw
in Montreal, the comeback to get a point against Ottawa, and then the comeback to winning overtime
against the Kings on Tuesday.
I'll start here.
I've been going back and forth
between these two players all day long
because they are both great options
with the way they have played.
But I'm going to give my warrior helmet to
Ricard Raquel with the way that he has played the last week.
Six points in three games,
including three goals.
And yes, he had the overtime winner
against the Kings on Tuesday.
He now, as I said about 30 seconds to a minute ago,
he now has 14 goals already this season.
only had 15 last year. And don't get me wrong, people. Yes, I definitely said this offseason.
If there's a chance to move him, I would definitely consider it just because I looked at his contract.
I was concerned with his age and like, is he going to get back to the level that we saw him play at
the season prior to the last one? I was nervous and I felt like rightly so. I understood that last year
was kind of a loss season, prim with injuries. But even when he came back, he still felt like didn't
feel fully right outside of a few games to end the season. Well,
Thankfully, they did not move him during the off season because he has been awesome.
Now, I'm not saying he's going to be here for the next three to four years or anything like that,
but he has been fantastic this year, especially this last week.
He's going to the net.
He's using that great release to his advantage.
His playmaking has been surreal.
He's been great on the forecheck.
He's such a seamless fit with Sidney Crosby.
He works great with Malkin as well, but he just works better with Crosby.
You're seeing that this season.
And I don't even want to know where this team would be in the standings without the play of Ricard Raquel this year.
He's been that good.
He gets my pick, even though I almost gave it to Brian Rust.
I almost did the same.
I almost gave mine to Brian Rust, but I am sticking with you.
And this is going to be a unanimous warrior helmet this week for Ricard Raquel,
which fun fact about our warrior helmet Wednesday, which I've been keeping track of this season.
This is the second time we have both given Ricard Raquel, the warrior
helmet. We did that after the third week of the season. We gave our warrior helmet both to
Ricard Raquel. But here's what pushed it over the edge for me, because I am petty. I love
pettiness in sports. It's my favorite thing. I often say the team captain, Sidney Crosby,
is the pettiest man in all of professional sports. And I stand by that. But we talked about this
when the Four Nations face-off rosters came out and Ricard Raquel was left.
off of Team Sweden.
Well, since that day that he was left off of that roster, in the time since the
rosters were announced, since Team Sweden did not put Ricard Raquel on the roster,
he now leads all Swedes with four goals and eight points in six games played.
So he took that as motivation.
And we talked about it on the show.
there were a lot of people both in the penguins and around the penguins from Sweden that were stunned.
He was not put on the roster.
And he has taken that and said, you know what?
I know the Olympics are in two years.
So you might want to give me a second look if you're not going to take me to four nations because I'm one of the better Swedish-born players.
Now, will that keep up into two years?
We'll see.
But for now, he's making a real statement to show team Sweden that they may be.
a mistake not putting him on the roster.
Agreed. And I love the Penguins PR tweet because they tagged the Swedish Hockey Federation
in that picture. And I'm like, you know what? I respect that. I respect that you did that
because you're showing them that they should have put Raquel on this team. And yeah, I mean,
right now he should be on the Olympic team in 26. As you said, we'll have to see if that continues
well into next year. But right now, if he's not on the 26 Olympic team,
team Sweden's going to have some questions to answer, at least the way he's playing as of now.
I think that's going to do it for today's episode of the locked on penguins podcast.
Pat and I both really appreciate everyone listening to slash watching every episode.
We're going to be back for a fresh Thursday edition of the show to go over a preview for the game
against Nashville who shut out the Rangers and the Rangers man.
Woof, they're just really going through it right now.
We're also going to get into some World Junior talk.
Penguins are going to be representing their countries in that.
And Justin Schultz officially announcing his retirement will sing his praises
throughout that episode as well.
So that's all coming up for you all on Thursday.
So for Patrick Damp, I'm Hunter Hodes.
Thank you all so much for tuning in.
We appreciate it.
We'll be back on Thursday.
