Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins - Penguins Captain Sidney Crosby still has the respect of the league
Episode Date: April 15, 2025The annual NHLPA Players Poll was released on Tuesday afternoon, and Sidney Crosby's name is still brought up among the best in the game. Before Patrick jumps into the results of the players' poll, we... discuss the organization's decision to send goaltender Sergei Murashov to the Wheeling Nailers ahead of the Kelly Cup Playoffs. He discusses why this decision might have been made and what it means moving forward. Then, it's time for the results of the players' poll. We talk about how Crosby still gets voted as one of, if not the best, players in the league, as well as some rule changes the players would like to see adopted from the PWHL. Finally, an underrated issue for the Penguins this offseason is the left side of the defense. Looking at the organizational depth chart, Kyle Dubas would be smart to make some improvements on the left. Today on Locked-on Penguins, the Wheeling Nailers and Wilkesbury Scranton penguins have made some roster moves ahead of the Calder Cup and Kelly Cup playoffs.
Sidney Crosby still very much has the respect of his peers.
In this offseason, Kyle Dubus would be wise to focus on the defense.
We'll get into all of that right after this.

As you can see, once again, I am flying solo today.
Now I have it officially confirmed.
Hunter will return to the show on Wednesday where we will discuss a few things as well,
as give our season-long Warrior Helmet Wednesday award after we tally up who got the most
weekly MVP Warrior Helmet Wednesday awards throughout the season.
But for now, he is still spending some time with his family.
Obviously, once again, all of our thoughts and condolences are with him as well as his family.
So with that in mind, let's jump right into it today to talk about right off the top
some things that may have been a little bit puzzling for fans of the Penguins organization
and those who are keeping a close eye on the Wheeling Naylor's in the ECHL
and the Wilkesbury Scranton Penguins in the AHL
as those two teams respectively get closer to the playoffs for them
as the penguins wrap up their season in the NHL on Thursday
against the Washington Capitals.
As we obviously know, the Pittsburgh Penguins,
once again, not qualifying for the Stanley Cup playoffs,
but the two farm clubs are headed to their respective playoffs.
The baby penguins will head to the Calder Cup playoffs.
The Wheeling Nailers will head to the Kelly Cup playoffs.
And the big news that was a bit of a head scratcher for a lot of people was the news
that goaltender Sergey Murashav has been reassigned to the Wheeling Nailers
after being one of the best goalies in the American Hockey League
in continuing his rapid ascent up the penguin's organizational depth chart
and looking like the goaltender of the future.
Now, we're going to address this in a couple different ways.
I think this might not be a total panic moment.
I don't think that this is the penguins saying that they no longer believe in Sergey
Marischov or that he's been demoted or anything like that.
The first thing to address on this issue is this, and it's simply the schedule.
The Nailers will kick off the Kelly Cup playoffs against the Norfolk Admirals in Virginia on Wednesday.
The HL season does not come to a conclusion until Sunday.
So we still have half of a week of an HL season to go,
and then probably a few days before the Calder Cup playoff schedule is officially announced.
and the baby penguins know who they'll be playing when and where.
So we still have that waiting and coming down the pike.
So at the very least, we know that there will be games played in the playoffs in the organization this very week,
specifically tomorrow against the Norfolk Admirals in Virginia against the Wheeling Nailers in game one of their series.
And then we still, like I said, have about a half of a week left of the American Hockey League.
season. So the playoffs, the Calder Cup playoffs are still a few days away, if not a week or more away.
So I think that could be part of this, that they looked at the way the schedules are lining up,
the way that the ECHL's season has been wrapped up. The Nailers playoffs get kicked off here in
about 26, 27 hours in Norfolk, Virginia for their two, three matchup in the Kelly Cup playoffs.
and they probably want to give them at the very least a kickstart to their playoff run
because this is the number two seed in the North Division for the Wheeling Nailers.
They look like a team that could go on another good run reminiscent of the one that they had
when I was with the team in 2016 when they made it all the way to the Kelly Cup final
against the Allen Americans ultimately falling in that series,
unable to capture a Kelly Cup championship.
And with that in mind, the other thing that I do think might be happening here,
and this is a bit of a singular personal theory on my end, it could be something, it could be
nothing.
The Wheeling Nailers have a very dedicated, very hardcore fan base down there in West Virginia,
and they have remained loyal through a lot of things from when the team was first brought
to the city in the 90s as the wheeling thunderbirds to now being the wheeling nailers.
And they have yet to win a Kelly Cup championship.
That has not happened in their team's history.
So that is something that I think the organization could be looking at is a little bit of fan
service for a very dedicated fan base in West Virginia to bring them a championship
or at the very least put them on the trajectory for a championship run.
Now, there's another theory that I have about this, and it could be probably the more likely one about what they've decided to do with the goaltending situation in the minor leagues.
Along with Murashav being sent to the Wheeling Nailers, Taylor Godier has been recalled to the baby penguins from the Wheeling Nailers.
I think part of this might be that they want to give Murashav as much.
runway as possible to be the starting goal tender. Obviously, Hunter and I have discussed this at length.
One of the things the Penguins organization now, especially under Kyle Dubus, has begun to do,
is to want their minor league systems and their minor league teams to be playing meaningful
hockey rather than just be incubators for their top talent, their top picks, and their top
prospects. When you look at it this way, it seems pretty clear that this baby penguins team is
very talented. They seem to have the type of roster that can go on a pretty significant run
throughout the Calder Cup playoffs. They also have two very good goalies in Philip Larson
and Yowell Blumquist, who have performed very well, especially Philip Larson, who has really
almost come out of nowhere for the baby penguins and been very effective in the net for them.
So if you were to keep Sergei Murashav in the AHL, you would essentially have three starting
caliber goaltenders and only one net.
If they really want Sergey Mirashav to continue to develop as the potential future
franchise goaltender for this organization, it would probably serve him well to be,
the guy for a run. In Wilkes-Bare right now, when you look at the aforementioned other two
goalies, if he has a shaky start, if he has a rough go of it, it would not be a difficult
decision for the baby penguins to go to one of the other options, to go to Yoel Blumquist,
to go to Philip Larson, and really try to keep that run going. Now when you look at the Wheeling
nailers with Sergey Mureshov there.
Very real chance that he's going to get opportunities to bounce back.
He is going to be the guy in the net for the nailers across this entire run, however long
it might last.
So really at this point, you have Taylor Godier who has, who was last years, last seasons,
excuse me, ECHL goaltender of the year, put on a really great performance.
but when you look at the full scope of the organization,
Gautier appears to really just be found money.
He's very talented at the ECHL level.
He's been fine enough when he's had some opportunities up at the H.L.
But when you look at the organizational depth chart,
it obviously goes Sergey Murshov, Yowell Blumquist,
Philip Larson, and then Taylor Goteer.
So if you were to put Murathe,
in the AHL for the Calder Cup playoffs as the guy.
I do think there is a chance that it could,
I don't want to say hamper his development because it is obviously the higher level.
It's the better competition.
But I do think they kind of want to put him in a scenario where he is the one starting
goaltender.
He doesn't have two other guys nipping at his heels or one other guy nipping at his heels or one
other guy nipping at his heels that could take the net from him, they want to put the saddle on him
for a postseason run and see how he does with this organization and in that role.
So while it was a bit of puzzling news yesterday, it came out not long after I finished recording
the show.
So I knew we were going to have to address it today.
But those are kind of my thoughts on it.
I do think that they want Murashab to be the guy for.
the Wheeling Nailers in this playoff run.
And it would be nice to see him go on a long run with the baby penguins,
but that could be something that we see next season as this organization continues to make
more and more moves and continues to have more draft picks, more prospects,
and other players in the pipeline that can fill in for those who hopefully will graduate
to the big club next season.
But that is going to wrap up our opening segment of the Tuesday edition of Locked-on Penguins.
When we come back, the NHLPA's player poll is here in Sydney Crosby still very much has the respect of his peers.
We will talk about that as well as one other thing from the NHLPA player poll that I want to get into.
So we will do that when we come back.
Stick with me.
We will talk about it here in just a second.
But first, we've got to tell you about today's first sponsor.
and that is wonderful pistachios.
If you're looking for a snack that's both delicious and nutritious,
crack into a good source of protein with wonderful pistachios.
Wonderful pistachios, it's one of the highest protein nuts.
Each one ounce serving has six grams of protein giving you over 10% of your daily value.
Plus, they are packed with fiber and those better for you unsaturated fats

Welcome back to the Tuesday edition of the Locked-on Penguins.
I'm your host, Patrick Damp, flying solo once again today as we await the return of Hunter Hodes.
He's spending time with his family.
And obviously we send him all of our best and he will be back for our Wednesday episode.
But today we saw that the NHLPA players poll has officially dropped.
It's a yearly tradition at this point where they survey hundreds of NHL.
players and get their thoughts on everything from the best players in the league to the best places
to play and so much more. And once again, it is clear that even at age 37, Sidney Crosby
still very much has the respect of his peers in the NHL. He won the top spot in the survey as
the smartest overall player, the one player that you would want if you needed to win a single
face off and the most complete player. Those three are absolutely great accolades for
Sidney Crosby even at age 37. It also marks the sixth straight season that his peers have voted
him as the most complete player. One thing I always have said when it comes to NHL awards and
things like that. No offense to our friends who spend 82 games a year and practices and so many other
moments covering the teams. They obviously are great sources of knowledge for this sport, but there is
no better praise than getting it from your peers who you battle with night in and night out.
The one thing, though, that I do have to address when it comes to this NHL player's poll is that he's starting to get some company near the top.
In years past, it was very much, hey, Sidney Crosby, he's the best of the best, and everybody else is fighting for second place.
You look at some of these categories when you take a look at most complete and smartest player.
he won by only about three percentage points over a couple of other players.
Hot on his trail and complete players, Sasha Barkov gets 30%.
I think that's very deserved.
It also changes from year to year because we know that guys have up years,
they have down years, good years, bad years, you name it.
But Sasha Barkov has continued to be one of the best all around forwards in the National
Hockey League.
And he's on the team that is the defending Stanley Cup championship.
and is looking to get to the Stanley Cup final for the third straight year.
He has been a huge driver for them in those efforts.
So that is very much deserved.
And then in Smartest, right behind him with 24% of the vote, Tampa Bay's Nikita Kucharov,
one of, I think we know at this point as I sit here wearing a blue shirt,
ironically enough if you're watching on YouTube, is a very deserved vote.
he has continued to just be one of the best players in the National Hockey League.
You can see at night in and night out.
The Tampa Bay Lightning, at least at this point, we can see,
are somewhat vindicated of keeping him, elevating him.
And it might have been bittersweet, but moving on from Stephen Stamcoast,
really, really great player there.
And I will say the surprising one for this,
was a player that you would get to win a face off.
He kind of ran roughshot over everybody.
The next closest to Sidney Crosby in that voting category
was Ryan O'Reilly, who couldn't even break 10%.
This, to me, is a perfect encapsulation of Sidney Crosby's career.
I have long said that he might be the pettiest athlete
that has ever played professional sports along with being one of the best.
because if you look back on his career when he first started,
one of the knocks on him was,
well,
great playmaker,
great puck distributor,
can't score goals,
though.
Some of that was because he came into league with Alex Ovechkin,
who we now know is the greatest goal score of all time.
No,
I will not be taking questions on that.
And when you're compared to a guy like Alex Ovechkin,
who is a goal scoring machine,
that is what the bar is going to be.
But then after that, a couple years later, ho-hum, he learns how to score goals, wins a rocket Richard trophy.
Some of the next knocks on him, well, you know, he's fine enough defensively,
but, you know, I wouldn't put him in the category of guys like Anse Copatar, but still okay.
Goes out, becomes a guy who people start talking about as could he be a Selky candidate?
He's a very good two-way forward.
tell Sidney Crosby he can't do something
and he is going to show you he absolutely can do it
the same thing goes for face-offs
never was there any sort of doubt
that Sidney Crosby was good at face-offs
he was pretty middle of the pack
all things considered wasn't a liability in the face-off
he wasn't like his counterpart of Gennie Malkin
who even to this day it kind of seems like
not very great at winning face-offs
but given his size speed and skill
throughout his career, it was natural to put him at the center position.
Now, Sidney Crosby is an extremely reliable player in the faceoff dot, and according to his peers,
one of the best to do it.
One other thing, Penguin Centric before I get into the last part of the NHL players poll
that I would like to discuss is Kevin Hayes voted most likely to be one of the best people
to become a broadcaster post career.
He gets a bit of a split vote among quite a few other players,
including Ryan Strom, Brad Marshawn, Pat Maroon,
Eric Comrie, Eric Johnson, and Marcus Felino.
All I can really say about that is,
I guess I've got to get a little bit more familiar with Kevin Hayes' game
because I've been a big fan of him this season.
I think he has been a very pleasant surprise.
I think he's been about his effect
as you could have expected him to be this year,
but did not know that he would make a good broadcaster.
So I'm going to have to pay a little bit more attention to Kevin Hayes in media scrums
and on Penguin's social media accounts to see if he does, in fact,
have the personality to become a good broadcaster.
Hopefully, we can maybe get him on this show or something like that and see how it looks.
Maybe he can knock me off here and him and Hunter can continue locked on.
penguins, but we will see about that.
Now, last thing I want to address from the NHLPA players poll was they were asked about
the PWHL in some of the roles that the PWHL employs right now that they would like
to see the NHL adopt.
And there were three of them that you can put me down as an absolute and total.
Yes, do it yesterday.
do it right now.
The first one, more of a fun kind of competition thing that I think has been really innovative
and really smart in the PWHL is the jailbreak role.
If you are unaware in the professional women's hockey league,
if a team scores a short-handed goal, it ends the penalty.
I love this role.
And the complete spirit of competition, if you take a penalty,
but you score a goal and you're the team on the power play and you surrender a goal,
you surrender your power play.
You should not be giving up short-handed goals.
Sure, sometimes it's error, sometimes it's bad break,
but at the end of the day, in the spirit of competition,
you are given an advantage, you gave up that advantage,
you officially give up that advantage.
Huge fan of that idea.
I think it would make the game a lot more exciting.
You would have power plays that play a little bit more urgent.
You would also have penalty kills that play a little bit more urgent,
making the game a lot more exciting.
Would love to see the NHL adapt that idea.
The other one that I am a gigantic fan of,
and I think most of our listeners and a lot of hockey fans
are huge proponents of is the three-point system.
PWH employs the three-point system.
For those who may not know, it is very simple, very easy to follow.
Three points for a regulation win, two points for an overtime win,
one point for an overtime loss, and no points for a regulation loss.
I know that the NHL is so, so dedicated to its idea of parity.
They want to make it seem like that every team is in the playoff race almost right to the bitter end, almost to the last two months of the season.
But let's look at this from another angle.
Having the point system they have in place right now with loser points, with only two points for a win,
sure, it's keeping some of these teams on the bubble, but it's hurting good teams.
It's giving the great teams an inability to pull away.
It's giving a lot of teams who probably aren't as good as some of the top tier teams,
the opportunity to acknowledge the fact that we're in the middle of a two-two tie with less than 10 minutes to go in regulation.
Let's play it safe.
Let's get to overtime.
Let's get our loser point.
And let's move on and live to fight another day.
I can't stand this.
Very similar to the jailbreak role.
If we are going to really want to keep the spirit of competition,
if we really want teams to be rewarded for being great in competing,
you've got to take away that loser point.
You've got to take away the fact that there are teams who will just be perfectly content
to wait until overtime, get their extra point, and hang around,
And then you're not rewarding the teams that get a win.
I want to see teams be able to battle and get that extra point.
And if you're a team who in this system is hanging around,
rather than lugging the puck around and hoping to get to three on three overtime,
you know that you can take a significant step in the playoff race
by pushing in a tie game in regulation and getting three points
rather than surrendering one and only settling for two.
I really want to see the NHL move to this system because I think it both rewards the very good teams, gives them the opportunity to move further in the standings and give themselves a nice home playoff game, home ice through the first two rounds, if not home ice through their entire conference playoff.
And it keeps us from having to act like some of these bubble teams have an actual shot at winning a Stanley Cup.
I want to see the best teams be the best teams.
That's really the main thing I want to see.
One last quick one.
I won't dive too deep into it because we're running a little bit long here on the Tuesday edition.
One thing the PWHL does, I think they can only really do this right now because it's a smaller league with only six teams.
But the top seed in the league gets to pick their first round opponent.
NHL loves rivalries,
NHL loves storylines,
we as sports fans,
we love drama,
we love mess,
so why not do it?
Why not let the top seat in the east,
in the top seat in the west,
which means we go back to one through eight,
which is the preferred playoff system,
if you ask me,
gets to pick their first round opponent,
and then you seed otherwise.
You want to have a team say,
you know what,
screw them,
they picked us,
they think we stink,
and we're going to be an easy out, that sets up a very good, very dramatic series.
And what if you get an upset?
Or on the other hand, speaking of competition, what if you're a team that says, you know what?
We want to get the hard work out of the way early.
And you can pick the number two seed.
Or you can pick a team that you've struggled against and say, you know what?
We want to get them out of our way early.
We want to get it done quickly.
And we want to make our way to the Stanley Cup final.
I think that'd be very fun.
I don't know how feasible it would be in a 16 team playoff as opposed to a four or five team
playoff.
So very curious, see how that would work.
I think that one's a little bit pie in the sky, a little bit ridiculous.
But the others think it would be very smart for the NHL to adopt the jailbreak rule as well
as the three point system.
That is going to do it for our middle segment.
When we come back, yeah, we're going to do a little more offseason talk because
Freaking penguins don't play till Thursday,
and we got to talk about something, right?
The defense, it's a little bit of an issue, as we know,
but it could be a little bit bigger of an issue than one's thought.
We will talk about that when we get back right after this,
but we've got to tell you about today's last sponsor,

Welcome back to the Tuesday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast.
I'm Patrick Damp, flying solo once again.
And let's dive right into this to finish up the show.
our good friend Josh Yohei from the athletic dropped quite another great piece,
his rumblings that he's hearing about the penguins plans for this off season,
as well as everything else moving forward as the 24, 25 season rumbles to a close.
And one of the things he briefly mentioned that I want to dive into for the final segment of this show
is something that should probably be near the top of the Penguins priority list this offseason.
And that is the left side of the defense.
Now, it has been a little bit of a struggle this season defensively.
As we know, this team has been fine enough and could be better.
Let's not really try to sugarcoat this.
Obviously, you don't make the playoffs.
You miss them by the most.
You've missed them for, excuse me, in years.
but the forward group did seem to get a tad bit better this year.
You had a much more, maybe not much more,
but a better bottom six than you've had in recent years
when the bottom six would just get caved in defensively,
bringing you absolutely nothing offensively.
Was it good?
No, it was not.
You miss the playoffs again by these many points.
There's clearly a lot of problems.
But we know that one of the team's biggest Achilles heel this year
was both defense and defensive play.
And I think a lot of that has to do with the roster personnel on defense.
The right side, it's fine enough.
We talked about Chris LaTang yesterday.
There's also a very real world, according to Josh,
and of just about everybody's, from what everybody's hearing,
that Eric Carlson could potentially be moved this offseason to another team.
The Penguins will likely have to retain some salary in order to do that.
but given the rising cap, given what this team is doing right now,
not that big of a deal to take a little bit of dead cap to move that off of your entire books.
So we will see what happens with that.
But you look at this defense.
The right side, it's okay with Chris LaTang with right now Eric Carlson.
And then you have Ryan Shea.
You also have Koliachanuk, Connor Timmons.
You also will have a couple of players coming up through the system who could be ready as soon as next year, but might take a couple more years.
You have Harrison Brunick, who was a revelation and it seemed to fit in well enough with the baby penguins now that his junior season has come to an end.
And then the rest of the system, there are a lot of right-handed defensemen coming up.
But as we know, with defensemen, it could take quite a while for them to develop into effective NHL defensemen.
And that's not so much a knock on them as it is just how it happens.
It's rare that we see 18, 19, 20 year old rookie defensemen come in and fit right away.
You have to adapt to the speed of the NHL.
You have to adapt to the skill of the NHL.
it's a very, very difficult position to just step in and be effective right away,
even if you are a top tier prospect because you are playing against the best of the best
and the speed difference from even the HL to the NHL is a bit different.
But you look at some of these players and you obviously have Owen Pickering,
who looked pretty good this year.
We want to see what he looks like when he comes up.
Kulia Chanok, he has been inconsistent, but looks like the potential is there to be a good
second or third pairing defenseman.
And then it's a little bit ugly on the left.
You have Ryan Graves.
You have Matt Griswick, who I will say I was surprised again that they didn't move him
at the trade deadline.
But I think outside of his rough start, he has been very serviceable
for the penguins. I think he's been a solid soldier. Obviously, he does not mesh with Chris LaTang.
I will never understand Sullivan's insistence of playing those two together, especially when
it appeared that you had something going with him and Carlson together, but I digress on that.
Philip Krall, actually, it was announced this morning. He is being called up, but we really
don't know what that is going to lead to. He's played two NHL games in his career.
and that was a couple of seasons ago with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Since then, he has been kind of all over the place.
So we'll see what happens with him.
And then you have Ryan Shea, who I don't mean this in a derogatory way, just an observation.
He is essentially a younger Chad Roo-Edle.
And Chad Roo-Edle has his value on a good team when he is your sixth or seventh or eighth
defensemen, but right now the penguins' needs are a little bit more than just being a serviceable
guy who can play 40 to 50 games a season, maybe even less depending on how good your roster is.
So when you look at the penguins' needs for this off season, there are quite a few,
and you know what their stated goals are, or to get younger, to get younger NHL-ready talent,
to get better younger prospects into the system who can be ready in a couple of years.
But when you look at the immediate, if this team does want to take a little bit of a step next
season, they are going to have to exhaust a lot of options on defense, in my opinion.
I think that whether it's the draft, whether it's trades and yes, even signings,
they are going to have to do something to address the left side of the defense because right now
it is a bit of a deficiency.
So it's a bit of an under the radar issue for the penguins,
but looking at the roster,
looking at the organizational depth chart,
