Well, here we are once again, Hunter.
the penguins find themselves with a two-nothing lead over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night.
And this morning, they find themselves three to two losers in overtime after blowing yet another multi-goal lead this season.
And if this game wasn't the epitome of this entire season, I don't know what was.
The penguins played very well in the first period.
They come out of it with a one-nothing lead.
Tristan Jari looks very solid in that first period.
Then same exact story in the second period.
The penguins play fairly well.
They add to their lead.
Tristan Jari makes a bunch of really good saves when called upon.
And then in the third period, it all falls apart.
Before we even break down the game truly,
I just want to throw this analytic out there from this game.
In the third period, the Tampa Bay Lightning had 76% of the shot attempts against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
That completely matches the eye test.
The third period, the Tampa Bay Lightning just completely took the game over, left the penguins no room to breathe,
and then the inevitable happens.
They tie the game, and then it goes to overtime and woof,
all of the goodwill, and we're going to talk about it later in the show,
that Tristan Jari built through the first two, two and a half periods of this game,
he completely gives away on the overtime winner.
Now, there are a lot of people to blame for the overtime winner,
but Tristan Jari is chief among them.
The rest of the game, though, again, I liked their game for the majority of it,
and then it just all falls apart in the third period.
I have one word for you for what they did in the third period, Pat.
Turtle.
That is what they did.
That was textbook turtling.
And when you do that and you don't want to live in the offensive zone,
the opposition is going to keep coming after you.
And it's only a matter of time before, A, they break through with a goal,
and beat before they tied it.
Both things happened in that third period.
Braden point, hell of a shot past Tristan Jari.
I don't know if any goaltender in the league stops that.
That is a beautiful shot by him coming around the net.
And then the second one, yeah, Jari kind of scores on himself,
but it is a little bit of bad luck because I can see what he was trying to do there.
He was trying to poke the puck free, get it out of there
because there was a lightning player right in his face,
trying to tap that puck in.
he tries to get there first, it goes over his shoulder, kind of bad luck, kind of funny at the same
time. We'll get to the overtime goal a bit later on in the show because that was thought out
awful. But you cannot turtle like that in the third period when you have that much talent
over there in Tampa Bay's top six. They were coming in wave after wave after wave and the penguins
had no answer for it. And I was getting ready to come on here potentially if they played a good
third period, excuse me, and be like, hey, this is honestly one of their better efforts of
the season, the first 20 minutes, they were great. They defended well. They got chances on
Andre Vasselowski. Tristan Jari was making some timely saves. And even in the second period, I know the
analytics swung in Tampa's favor. You know, for example, the lightning had 70% of the shot
attempts. They also had five high danger chances for, two high danger chances against. But the Penguins,
they still added to their lead. They still played a bit more in the offensive zone. Tristan Jari's still
made a few more good timely saves, but it all fell apart once again in the third period.
The penguins do not know how to play in the third period this year, but it's not even just
this year, Pat. This goes back to last year. It goes back to the season before that.
These last three seasons, they have been awful at defending leads in third periods.
And it's such a stark contrast from where they were under Sullivan when he first took over.
Remember 2016, 2017?
they were unbeatable when they took a lead into the third period.
It didn't matter if it was a one goal lead, a two goal lead, a three goal lead, whatever.
They were always able to clamp it down, shut down the opposition,
and they were also able to play well in the offensive zone,
continue to get chances and not churble.
That has all gone completely out the window these last three years.
And it's ridiculous.
That is their eighth multi-gold blown lead in 21 games.
We are not even at game 30 yet.
And they've already blown eight multi-gole leads.
It's on the players and it's 100% on the coaches as well.
This is ridiculous already.
It's really bad because even you stretched all the way back to 2016,
2017 when they were winning championships.
I mean, you can even stretch back to 2020, 2021,
and even 2022 to an extent where,
this team left you no room to breathe when they had a lead. They kept their foot on the gas,
or if they didn't keep their foot on the gas, they played very similar hockey to what got them
the lead. They continued just to borrow a phrase, they trusted the process. They kept doing
all the things that brought them success, and it continued to bring them success. And
these last couple years, you're spot on. They
turtle when they get a lead. They go into a shell. They stop attacking. They stop doing the things they do in
the offensive zone. And they look to just white knuckle it until they're able to hopefully get out of the
game. And as you've said, on eight different occasions this year, that has failed them. They have
blown the lead and they have lost. And it's it's inexcusable just because you watch the first two periods of
last night's game. They were clearly an overmatched team. Tampa was clearly better than them,
but they played really well on the counter. They kept most of Tampa Bay's chances to the outside.
They cleared the front of the net and let Tristan Jari see the puck. They killed penalties
extremely well. I know they're one of the last Tampa power plays that they got a lot of opportunities
and extended zone time, but if you go back and watch the actual footage, none of them.
those are high percentage chances.
They're all from the point.
They're all from the half wall.
Rarely is anybody in front of the net.
And then they just went completely away from it in the third.
They were giving up the front of the net.
I mean, even the bad luck goal on Tristan Jari, he makes the right play.
It just takes a weird bounce off his stick and goes in.
That happens in hockey.
But even if you watch everything else around it, they barely contest behind the net.
And it takes them until the last possible second to,
tie up the man in front.
And that's what led to the goal for up until the exact last second, there was an
option for Tampa in front of the net.
For the first two periods, that option was gone.
And if it was there, it was a very broken play where a puck bounces over a stick or
somebody sneaks loose.
But for the majority of the game, the penguins owned the front of the net in the first
two periods.
They did not let Tampa take over that area of the ice.
and they said, if you're going to beat us, we are going to force you to beat us from the outside.
And then for the final 20 minutes, they just completely surrendered.
Right. And they gave up 16 scoring chances at five on five in that third period.
The Penguins only had three of their own.
Again, they were turtling that entire third period, trying to rely on Jari to keep bailing them out like he was,
at least to start that period and at least to an extent in the second period.
They also only had the Penguins that is one high danger chance at five on five in that third period.
You're not going to protect leads like that in today's initial, especially against the Tampa team that has, again, a lot of talent in that top six.
Their bottom six is atrocious.
It's not very good.
This is a very top heavy lightning team when you compare this team to past Tampa Bay teams.
But you still need to be able to defend so much better in your own zone.
You were doing it to a degree, especially well in the first period.
Second period, it went down a little bit, but you were still at least putting up a solid effort through 40 minutes.
But it's that final 20 that they still need to iron out.
But I just don't know if they're going to, especially under this head coach now.
It's a very open question and very concerning.
But we also have to talk about the overtime frame as well.
And Hunter and I are going to do that when we come back.

All right, welcome back to the Wednesday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast.
I'm one of your host, Patrick Damp, joined as always by the one and only Hunter Hodes.
And let's keep it going here, Hunter, three, two losers for the penguins last night to the Tampa Bay Lightning in overtime.
We talked about it in the first segment.
They absolutely turtled in the third, opening the door for the Tampa Bay Lightning to force overtime, tying the game at two.
And then they lose in overtime.
One of the biggest takeaways from last night's game was that for about two and a half periods,
I'd even say three periods at this point because I really can't blame Tristan Jari for either goal in regulation.
Then after having a great bounce back performance through 60 minutes,
he gives that all away in overtime with just an absolutely inexcusable effort.
he swam all the way out of his net to basically West Virginia,
and it just left the wide open net for Tampa to win the game.
And it's so hard to really analyze it because we know the history.
We know what has happened over the last year with Tristan Jari,
with his struggles with him falling apart down the stretch last year to starting this year
in such a poor manner that they had to send him to Wilkes Bear for two weeks.
And you look at all the good he did last night.
And you're thinking, all right, he might have starting, he might be starting to figure it out.
He might be starting to get back to form.
And then that overtime goal, there's a lot of blame to go around on that.
But chief among them is Tristan Jari.
100%.
That play negated everything else that he did in the first 60 minutes of that game.
And the Penguins, I felt like we're playing fine in three on three.
it was kind of low event a little bit.
The Penguins did have at least one chance earlier on Marcus Pedersen got the puck,
and he did a slap past Sidney Crosby who tried to deflect it in.
Honestly, I would just let that sucker rip.
I would have just shot that at the net.
But hey, that's just me, a degenerate sitting on the couch watching.
And that's why I'm not in the NHL.
I'm not Marcus Pedersen.
But I have no clue what Jari was doing there.
What was he biting on Pat?
That's what I want to know.
There was no shot fake.
He just, as you said, swam out of his crease for no reason, lost the net, and then
Braden points like, oh, okay, thank you very much.
I'm just going to tuck this in and score it, and we'll get out of here.
And that's exactly what he did.
I'm just so bewildered by what he did.
And in my head, I was kind of like, when is the funny or bad jarring moment going to come?
Because it felt like this was too good to be true.
He was playing very well.
regulation. I'm like, we haven't really seen him play this well in a game for a full game that
is all season. So when is the regular season Jari going to come out and not, you know, Jari of the
past that we've seen in this game? And sure enough, that Jari came out in overtime. And my goodness,
man, I really don't know what you do going forward here. I mean, I think you got to start in
Delkevich on Friday right now. But when he's giving you,
that is that type of goal tending where he's flopping around like a fish in his net and he's biting
on fakes that aren't there. I just don't know what the plan is for him because if your goal is
to get him to up his value, he's not doing that. He had again a fine 60 minutes, but you just
completely tanked your value again after what you just did in overtime. That was a terrible play. But also,
we should say, what is Matt Grizzlic doing there, Pat? Please, what is he doing there? Out in no man's
yet again, we've had this discussion on the show the last week or two.
Taylor Haas of D.K. Pittsburgh Sports wrote about this last time as well.
It was a really good article today.
And we've been saying this.
It is past time for Matt Grizzlick to be scratched.
It's ridiculous that he's not already.
It is.
And, you know, Taylor brought this up in her article.
If there's one thing that Mike Sullivan said earlier this season that is ringing true,
or at the very least you want to ring true at this point in the state,
season. It's that performance will dictate playing time. And for the most part, I will say this,
for the most part, he has held true to that this year. We have seen guys come out of the lineup,
if nothing else, to give some other guys looks, but those guys didn't get extended looks. And then
you see guys like Yassie Poo-Yarvey keep getting more and more looks. They're getting more opportunities
because they're playing well.
But for whatever reason,
Matt Grizzlick has become this year's Ryan Graves
in that he's continually been a total liability
for this defensive core.
And yet they keep trotting him out
and not even just trotting him out.
They're putting them out there in high leverage situations.
They're putting them on the power play.
They're putting them out there in overtime.
And I get that this is a player that you basically acquired to trade.
You brought him in so you could get some sort of value out of them at the trade deadline.
But right now, he does not have any sort of value.
There is not going to be.
There are no more Arizona coyotes in the league.
There aren't teams that are just going to be your problem solver and take your bad contracts so they can put them on LTIR or do whatever they want with them because they're not attempting to win in any way, shape, or form.
So that's completely out the window.
And the other thing in Taylor's article that was striking to me is he's not just playing worse than Ryan Graves.
He's playing marketedly worse than Ryan Graves.
When it comes to your basic statistics, goals for, goals against, he's one of the worst defensemen.
Pat, this is Jack Johnson territory right now.
This is where it is in all honesty.
It's right there.
And the thing is, I was.
I was thinking about it this way with Matt Grizzlick.
When you look at when he was effective,
when you look at the type of player he was with Boston,
he was not a top pairing guy.
He was a middle pairing guy.
He would play 15 to 18 at max minutes a night.
They're having him play 20, 21, 22 minutes a night.
And at this point, obviously, it lies with him
because he's the one on the ice playing the game.
that eventually you have to be held to account for the way you play.
But he's being put in a role he can't handle.
So at some point, it is going to shift away from players' ability to coaching staff usage.
He's not equipped to play these kind of minutes and they keep making him play these kind of minutes.
Just look at Ryan Graves right now, even though he's been scratched for the last couple games.
When he's played this year, he has been playing 13 to 15 minutes a night on a bottom pairing and he's been fine.
The problem is they don't have anybody else around.
If you ask me, I know it's early.
I know it's only been in two games,
but there's no reason Owen Pickering should go back to the HL right now.
Right now, no.
I mean, I know Crystal Tang is getting close to being fully back from his illness.
It sounds like he could be playing on Friday.
He was at practice today on Wednesday.
Kevin Hazel was also back at practice on Wednesday.
Decent chance he could play on Friday as well, if not Friday,
potentially Saturday.
But we're getting close to Crystal Tang being back.
When he comes back, he's going to slot.
in. But the question is going to be who's going to come out. If it's up to me, I take Matt
Griswick out and I put Chrysletang in. You have Owen Pickering on the left side. You have Marcus
Pedersen there. Figure out the top four pairings and then figure out the bottom pairing. That is
what you should be doing. If you want to go based off performance, Owen Pickering has played better
in these last couple of games than Matt Grisleck has played all season. And I get it. You don't
want to rush Pickering's development, but he's been totally fine in these couple of games.
He had a really nice debut.
Even last time against Tampa Bay, he didn't really make any mistakes.
And that's what I want to see from a young defenseman.
I want to see him play just fine to start and have him not making mistakes.
He had a great debut.
I'd rather see Pickering play a bit more compared to Grizzlick, who I'm not even sure
is going to be on this team past the deadline.
And still, who knows if anyone's going to trade for him, but the Penguins could
also potentially place him on waivers if they want to.
He's not going to be on this team past this season,
but I'd like to think he won't be on this team past the deadline as well.
I get they're trying to showcase him to other teams by putting him in all of different
situations, but he's failing in every situation you put him on five on five,
power play, three on three overtime.
He's not been good this year.
And I'm glad that Taylor wrote that because it's something that we've been talking about
for the last week or two that he needs to be scratched.
He has been their worst defenseman this season.
And one more thing before we do had to break.
Mike Sullivan had a pretty scathing answer last night
when he was asked about the blowing liens
and why they become a problem.
And he says, we have to compete harder.
We need more guys to compete harder and pay more attention to detail.
And we need to take more pride in playing defense.
That quote comes courtesy of the legendary Seth World Ball.
And it's like, Mike, where was this the first time this happened earlier this season?
Why are you just saying this now?
You are also very much part of the problem.
How are you just saying this now and you're fed up and pissed off now?
Good baby.
It wouldn't happen the first time during the first week or two of the season.
I just don't get it.
Yeah, it's really confusing.
As for pickering, the way I look at it is this, because I am of the mindset.
You don't want to rush his development.
But on the other hand of this, you just keep playing him for right now.
Yeah.
And if the wheels start wobbling a little bit, there's nothing wrong with,
taking them out of the lineup and sending them back.
But you want a part of the development, what you want to happen is you want them to get a taste
of NHL action to understand what it takes to get there and then what it takes to stay there.
That is the biggest cliche because it's true.
It's not difficult to get to the league relatively.
I know.
It's the best league in the world.
It's very difficult to get there.
But when you are a professional who has been drafted in his play,
playing professional hockey.
The easy part is getting there.
The hard part is staying.
And right now, he is playing well enough to stay.
And again, if the wheels start wobble in a little bit,
he starts looking a little shaky,
there's nothing wrong with taking him out of the lineup and sending him back.
But for now, especially when Latang comes back,
Grizzlick should come out.
Pickering should stay in.
But we will see what happens with that.
That's enough negativity for now.
It's Wednesday.
you know what that means. It's Warrior Helmet Wednesday. It's back after a week hiatus.
Hunter and I will give our picks for Warrior Helmet Wednesday when we come back.

All right, welcome back to the Wednesday edition of the Locked on Penguins podcast.
I'm Patrick Damp, joined by my co-host Hunter Hodes.
And I just said it, it's Wednesday.
So you know what that means?
It's Warrior Helmet Wednesday.
I notice we've got quite a few new subscribers here today.
So if you are new, here is what Warrior Helmet Wednesday is.
We're paying homage to the 2016 Stanley Cup winning Pittsburgh Penguins
and what they did in the locker room after all of their victories.
They gave out a Warrior Helmet as their MVP of the game.
Hunter and I, we give out our proverbial warrior helmet for our MVP of the week. And this was not
an easy one to do this week because it has not been a very fun or good week in the land of
the Pittsburgh Penguins. But there is one player I do think is deserving of a warrior helmet
this Wednesday. It's a guy that we have both been very high on since the preseason. And that is
one yesy pull yarvey i thought he had a very solid week overall he scored in the last two games but
away from the score sheet i thought he has continued to play a very solid game the things that got
him an extended look in the preseason he's playing a very straightforward fast game
not afraid to go to the scoring areas and he's been rewarded twice already in the last two games
and overall, I don't think he has to leave the lineup at all this year.
If nothing else, he is very much upping his trade value.
But he's also maybe making a case that, hey, I'm still in my mid-20s.
I see where this team is going.
I want to be a part of it moving forward.
He could be an option for this team over the next few years.
But I thought it was a very good week for him.
As they kept saying on the Sportsnet or Sportsnet Pittsburgh broadcast last night,
there's something cooking with that OPP line with Drew O'Connor, Sam Poulan, and Yassie Poo-Yarvi.
I want to see that line get a lot more looks because they played very well.
But for Wednesday this week, my warrior helmet, Yassie Poo-Yarvey.
Hunter, what say you?
Yeah, that's a very good one.
I easily could have given mine to Poo-Yarvey as well.
I'm going to go Brian Rust for this past week.
I think he's had a really strong week for the Penguins.
He got things started against San Jose this past weekend with a really nice goal.
He had his patented move to the front of the net against the Red Wings last week.
Just a beautiful backhand, forehand move.
And he's been playing a lot better over the last week.
I know he's kind of had a little bit of an up and down season today.
He has five goals, seven points in 14 games.
Underlines are at least this past week have been pretty solid.
But I'm liking the play that I'm seeing from Russ.
He can play with either Crosby or Malkin.
His two goals were, again, typical Brian Russ type goals.
And you can see how much of a leader.
he continues to be both on and off the ice.
He's trying everything in his power to kind of jumpstart this team just in the same way that, you know,
Crosby is, Malkin, you know, the core leadership group of this team.
And I would put Rust in there because he's been there for so long.
And I really don't think the Penguins want to trade him at this deadline or even in the foreseeable future.
I think they want to keep Rust as part of this team.
And yeah, he's my pick for this past week.
I think he had a really strong week.
but Poyarvi, he would be kind of, you know, a one B candidate, but I'm going to give mine to Rust.
Yeah, that's a really solid pick. I agree with pretty much everything you said.
I also, I think the Penguins, when it comes to Rust, and this will just be a real quick point to close out the show,
I know that his name has been brought up in somebody that they could sell, but between having a
full no move in his deal and still having four years to go on it, being 32 in playing the type
of hockey that Brian Rust plays.
I don't know if there's going to be a lot of teams that jump to take that.
It would have to be a team that thinks they are quite literally one singular piece away
from winning.
And it's Brian Rust, because as we know, banners hang forever.
So if you win and you have an albatross on your salary cap, you get that three to four
year grace period where you go, you know, we just won.
It doesn't matter about who cares about that contract.
we still have to glow of the Stanley Cup behind us.
But add that with,
he's the only non-core member out of Crosby,
Malkan-Latang that's still here from those Stanley Cup victories.
And you can tell he really enjoys and really likes being a Pittsburgh penguin.
So I think he's a penguin until he's done.
So that's where I stand on that.
Yeah, I think the only way he doesn't finish his career at the penguins
as if I kind of think he wants out, that's what I think.
at this point.
So yeah, that's how I feel.
Yep.
But that is going to do it for the Wednesday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast.
Hunter and I will be back with a brand new episode for you tomorrow.
And then on Friday, we will get you set for both weekend games against the Winnipeg Jets and the fighting Utah Utins, which we will get you set for those with a preview.
But for now, thank you as always for tuning in for Hunter Hodes.
I'm Patrick Damp.
Thanks again.
And we will talk to you on Thursday.
Thank you.
