So, Pat, the Penguins practice fully on Wednesday after an optional practice took place in Cranberry on Tuesday. And if Gany Malkin was once again a full participant, and we're getting very close to seeing him return.
Starting point is 00:01:23 I would be stunned if he does not return on Thursday. he looks to be 100% healthy and he had two new players on his line today. And those two players, Igor Chinikov, which by the way, people, it is not Yegor Chinokov, the Penguins want everyone to know it is Igor Chinokov. That is his name apparently. Everyone has been getting it wrong ever since he got into the NHL. So once again, it is Igor Chinokov, not Igor Chinokov. But besides Chinokov, Ben Kindle was on his line.
Starting point is 00:01:53 And this is the kicker. Ben Kindlepat was centering that line. Dan Amuze also wanted to make that very clear when he spoke to everyone after practice. So very intriguing here. It looks like Evgeny Malkin might start out on the wing. And honestly, why not? You've won five in a row.
Starting point is 00:02:10 You can experiment a little bit. If it doesn't work, you can maybe reunite the big boy line with Malkin, Manta, and Brzo. By the way, Manta and Brzeau are still with Tommy Novak, which I get it because of how great Novak has been playing with them. I still felt like they were going to,
Starting point is 00:02:24 to put Malkin back there, but News wants to experiment a little bit. And I do like the idea of Kindle and Malkin together just with the way they are as playmakers, the way they see the ice, combine that with Chinochov's finishing ability. I think you have the makings of a pretty solid second line there. So, Pat, your thoughts on a potential second line there with Chinov, Malkin, and Kendall. I think this is smart because we got to remember that Gino's getting up there in age relatively for sports. I say as he's all of like four years older than me. So I digress. But he's been out for quite a bit and you don't want to throw him right back into the fire.
Starting point is 00:03:04 You want to give him a little bit of a chance to ramp back up, especially with the way this team has been playing. You mentioned it. They're in the middle of a five game winning streak. Things seem to be going pretty well, all things considered. They've really seemed to find some good chemistry on all four lines. So this is a pretty easy way to kind of get things rolling again. And you obviously also have the added issue of Rutger Magrorty suffering a concussion and being put on injured reserve. So that just kind of automatically opens up a slot for Evgeny Malkin to come back. I like the fact that it keeps Kindle at his natural position because we saw earlier in the year. They did a little bit of work with Kindle on the wing and it wasn't terrible, but you could tell
Starting point is 00:03:54 that this kid is a natural center. That's where he's at his best. So putting this line together, I think is going to work really well, at least in theory. I think you look at Malkin and Malkin will be able to open up a lot of space for both Kindle and Chinikov. Chinikov, you give him room, you give him space, and you give him an opportunity to use his space. as well as get that shot off. That is going to be clutch for him. Kindle, as we continue to find out, just has really good puck distribution skills. So being able to get the puck to one of or both of Malkin and Shinnikov is going to be
Starting point is 00:04:35 hopefully really good for them. But overall, I come back to, along with what I'm saying about wanting to ease Malkin back in, you also look at his comments where he basically, said, I don't care if Dan Mews wants to put me in net. I just want to play. Yeah. You know that this isn't going to be that big of a deal, putting Evgeny Malkin on the wing with Ben Kindle and Igor Chinnikov.
Starting point is 00:05:00 Yes, Igor Chinochov, once again, for everyone out there. We probably said it five times in the first five minutes of today's episode, but that's okay. Just want to make sure everyone knows. But yeah, I do like the makings of this line, especially because even outside of how good Malkin and Kindle are as playmakers, they are also. solid goal scores so far. I mean, Kendall, he's only played in half of the season so far, but we've seen him use his shot when he wants to, you know, it's a weapon. But again,
Starting point is 00:05:27 his hockey IQ combined with his playmaking ability and the way he also defends in his own zone. I like that a lot of getting Malkin. We've seen him play a little bit of wing over the last year. So it's not a lot, Pat. We've seen him play a little bit with Crosby, for example. Thought he was totally fine. So very least going to test it out. I mean, we've even seen Ricard Raquel play at center at times honestly a little bit pat so they've tested that out a little bit when you've won five in a row like this you can test things out a little bit with Chinikov again we all know how great his shot is he's very quick as a skater so again i'm super intrigued or fascinated to see how this line goes as for the rest of the lines really no surprise the top
Starting point is 00:06:11 line is still intact with Raquel crosbie rust no back with mantha and brazo again i get i just don't think they want to touch that line right now. But if something happens with this new look second line, if they don't like what they see for a game or two, I'm sure again, they can just put Malkin right back up with those two. And then they can move Kindle back down to the third line and have him play with, you know,
Starting point is 00:06:33 Chinokov, Novak, whoever they want. And the other thing to keep in mind here, too, is I know for a little bit there, we were concerned about the play of the first of the top line, at least defensively, they weren't really, doing all that well. They weren't struggling, but it wasn't to the level we had come to expect from that top line. But over these past couple of weeks, they have really started to find their footing again. And you don't want to mess with that. You don't want to mess with a lot of what
Starting point is 00:07:03 you've had over the past few weeks. So I think overall, this is, it's unfortunate for Rutger McGority, who I do think has been really finding his game over the past few games. But now with him out, Malkin coming back in, you've got kind of just a ready made place to put them. And the thing I always say about this stuff, this could change 30 seconds into tomorrow's game against the devils. They could have a rough shift. They could have a injury, hopefully not. Or Dammeuse could just say, you know what, we're switching it up. So in no world is any of this set in stone, except maybe the first line, because I really don't see that getting broken up any.
Starting point is 00:07:50 Well, the fourth line, too, that that one is set in stone. I don't really see that line getting broken up with Deer Lazot and Achari. That was again, the fourth line today at practice. And Kevin Hayes was once again an extra and Vili Coivinen. We do have to see Pat if Coivinen gets potentially sent down just to get some playing time in Wilkesbury. It does suck, though. That Rucker McGority is out with a concussion. It really seems like it was just a freak accident during Tuesday's practice,
Starting point is 00:08:12 runs into his teammate. You could tell right away that something was wrong. Best wishes to a speedy recovery. You don't ever want to put a timetable on a concussion or anything like that, but just really sucks because, you know, he missed all camp in preseason, missed a good chunk of the beginning of the season, was coming back, was starting to really find his game here. And now he's going to be out for a little bit due to concussion. So just thanks again, best wishes to him on a speedy recovery. And he'll be back in the lineup at some point this season. Defensively, though, Pat, same pairings, while there's been Carlson. faculty saying she and st ivany with connor clifton as an extra i still wonder if clifton is going
Starting point is 00:08:47 to get into the lineup at some point again at just the last couple of games that i'm nitpicking i haven't really liked st ivney's game but i guess they're going to keep him in there for now but that's really all you have to say about the practice lines the penguins will play the devils on thursday a devil's team that is going through it right now to say the least they just lost nine nothing to the islanders and they keep booing luke hughes we're going to get into more of that on Thursday pack but that's a team coming in that's the vibes are rancid there they're not good and part of it is understandable i mean they're they're not in a great place they're struggling and their cap situation's a mess but that's a discussion for tomorrow's episode as for the bottom
Starting point is 00:09:28 pair i'm still sticking with what i said a little while ago about wanting to give that pair some runway because there has been good since they have been together. Granted, St. Ivany has struggled a little bit, but I do think they're approaching this the same way the entire organization is approaching things in the sense that they want these guys to mess up and then see what they do in response. There's not going to be a one strike in your out policy. If he continues to struggle, I don't think he's going to be.
Starting point is 00:10:05 be constantly in the lineup, but I do think it's going to be more than one or two games. And while that's going to be frustrating with this team in the midst of a playoff race, we do have to keep our thinking caps on and understand that they're thinking long term here. If they go on a run this year and make the playoffs and whatever, that is totally and completely house money. Oh, yeah. They want to see what some of these younger players can do. while St. Ivany doesn't strike me as a guy that they see in their long, long term plans,
Starting point is 00:10:41 but at least for now, he's here, he's a younger player, they want to see what they got, and they want to see what he does when things get rough. I guess he just needs to bounce back in a way. I just haven't liked his last couple of performances, you know, taking the penalty late in the third man, the play on the third Columbus goal on Sunday where he's just completely out of position. And yeah, she laws, I still think he needs to make that save. But I think St. I havenny also needs to play that a lot better.
Starting point is 00:11:10 So I guess in a way, if you want to argue that you can see what he's made of trying to bounce back, I'll listen to it. I just think I don't know how much better it's truly going to get. Again, that's just me on that one. I'm sure Clifton will play at some point this season. Again, I'm not out here simping for Conor Clifton. I don't really think he's that good or anything. He's physical. That's really it.
Starting point is 00:11:32 But St. Ivan, he also just hasn't shown me a lot. either it's i keep going with my take man you're kind of rearranging deck chairs on that spot on the third pair but i think that's going to do it for this first segment coming up in the second segment penguins reassigned harrison brunick back to the camloops blazers of the w hl on wednesday and pat and i are going to discuss that move coming up right after this but before we get to that we have to tell you all about our first sponsor which is fandal the wildcar round is here and fandle is officially in playoff mode. All right, we're back here on this episode of the Lockdown Penguins podcast. I am one of your host, Hunter Hodes.
Starting point is 00:13:04 joined by my coast, Patrick Damp, and Pat, my guess came true on Tuesday. I just put a guess out there saying that I think they're going to send Harrison Brunick back to Cam Loops. And sure enough, they did that first thing Wednesday morning. He returned from the Royal Juniors on Tuesday. And Kyle Dubus and the rest of the manager group and the coaching staff decided to send Brunick back to the WHL, the Cam Loops Blazers, his junior team, where he will play for the second half of the season. And I'm okay with this. He was getting scratched quite a bit after playing in his.
Starting point is 00:13:34 ninth NHL game. And in that game, he really struggled. So they were kind of just taking it day by day. He was getting some practices in. They were kind of waiting for the rural juniors to see how you do there. I think his role juniors were up and down. I felt like he was fine. Didn't really stand out that much, but I also don't think he was really awful, either, at least in the minutes that I watched. But now he's going to get to go back to his junior team, play consistently, which I think is going to be big for him, get his confidence up. And at the end of the season, I think he can join Wilkesbury for their playoff run, because we all know how good Wilkesbury is. And then after that, Pat, he can try to make this team on a more full-time basis for next season. So I'm okay with this.
Starting point is 00:14:19 This is another moment where we really got to dislike the agreement between the DHL and the NHL because- It's changing next year, but I agree it sucks for right now. Harrison Brunick is probably too good to go back to the WHL, but he's definitely not good enough to be in the NHL full time yet. And having him play every third or fourth game where he's in and out of the lineup, it's not going to help him because I know that some of our listeners will hear me say that, and they'll go back to my earlier episodes where I said, oh, he'll benefit from being in an NHL program and getting the training
Starting point is 00:15:01 and all the experience, but that changed when we saw the way he played his last few games. As I continue to point out, one of his biggest problems was netfront in his own end. And when you're a young defenseman, especially on a team that wants to be at least moderately competitive, that's the literal one place you can't struggle. If he was struggling a little bit with breakouts,
Starting point is 00:15:30 with defending the rush or making offensive decisions, you could live with that. But being the fact that the front of the net was seated territory when he was on the ice became a bit of a problem. So you're right. It'll be really good for him to go back to Cam Loops. And this isn't Cam Loops from last year. This isn't a team at the bottom of the standings. This is a team that's pretty competitive.
Starting point is 00:15:57 They've really improved over the last year. So he's going to get to play meaningful hockey in a meaningful rule for a team that's in the hunt. So this will help him long term. And to the world junior point, the only thing that would I think brought him back past the world juniors is if he was a standout on Canada. He wasn't bad. Let's not get that twisted. He was not a bad player for team Canada at the world juniors. but I think the only route he had open to return to the Penguins
Starting point is 00:16:30 was to go out and dominate the world juniors, and he didn't. But there is still an extremely bright future for this kid moving forward. And now he gets a chance to play in some really elevated minutes on a team in the WHL that is absolutely competing right now. Right. He also gets to go out there and try and dominate those minutes as well. He's had a taste of initial action. He played nine games.
Starting point is 00:16:53 He got to see what it's like to play at the highest level. now he can bring those experiences back to junior hockey where you're not playing against that top competition that you were in the NHL. So I want to see him go out there. I want to see him dominate and at the end of the season, depending on when it ends, because you're right, Cam Loops is better this year. They're better than I personally expecting them to be, excuse me. I was a bit concerned going into the year because I was just nervous that they were going to be bad like they were last year. That is not the case. You said, I think they are a much better team this year. And so when you have all of that
Starting point is 00:17:27 it makes for better competitive games and also it's good for his development as well that he's playing on a team that's much better you're not just eating top pairing minutes on a team that's not really going anywhere and still as I said depending on when his season ends he'll go right back to Wilkesbury like he did
Starting point is 00:17:46 I should remember Pat his season ended he got a taste of the HL and he played very well I thought for Wilkesbury down the stretch and especially into the playoffs when those playoffs started. So that's also going to be key for him as well. Once he finishes the season up with Kim Loops, goes to Wilkesbury, plays in more high-stakes games, and then he can bring those experiences back to training camp next summer to try and make this team on a more full-time
Starting point is 00:18:09 basis. People have to remember, he's only 19. They're not screwing him over or anything like that. He is still very young. I think he is going to be totally fine, and I think he is going to be on this team sooner rather than later. You also look at the way both, you look at both the film from when he played for Wilkes Bear in that little stretch. And then you hear the way head coach Kirk McDonald talked about him. They know that this kid has a ton of potential. But we also know that when it comes to young defensemen, it takes a while. It is very rarely overnight.
Starting point is 00:18:44 Matthew Schaefer, I know that's a wild example to pull, but he is the exception, not the rule. That is a player that is generational. That's a player that can step in. to the highest league and take on those minutes and not be phased by them. The majority of the time, when you draft a defenseman like Harrison Brunich, it takes a little bit. It's going to take a couple years for him to adjust to the way the NHL game is played. And here's the biggest reason.
Starting point is 00:19:14 And I have had this conversation with plenty of people is the NHL is almost robotic. And I mean that in a positive way. Players know where to be at all times. Players know what they need to do at all times. Whether it's the junior leagues, the NCAA, the ECHL, or the AHL, it's a little bit more chaotic. It's a little bit more improvisational. So when you play at those lower levels, you do have to get a little bit sharper. you do have to be a little bit better because it's not like the NHL where everybody knows
Starting point is 00:19:55 their role everybody knows where they've got to go everybody knows what pass to make it's it's I don't want to say predictable because it's the game of hockey it's incredibly unpredictable but the basics are just that in the NHL so he has got to really refine his game and then once he does that I do think that the sky is the limit for this kid I do can be a really solid contributor for this team. I don't know if he's going to be on the top pair or anything like that. I think we got to wait to see how he does and, you know, a second or third pair role. But I think potentially long term, if he develops, I can see him being a very stable presence
Starting point is 00:20:33 on the second pair with maybe, just maybe a ceiling of being, you know, a number two defenseman on a team. But still, we got to see how he does in a bit of a lesser role a bit first. I don't want to put unfair expectations on this kid. I'm just saying that development takes some time. I think this is the right move for him so he can get more consistent playing time get some confidence up and then he can go
Starting point is 00:20:55 into the summer do his thing going to training camp next year and really try to make this team on a more full-time basis and really crack a spot on the every night roster. I still, even outside of his net front presence, still think he can work on a few things defending some odd man rushes and just some of his
Starting point is 00:21:11 decision making overall I think also needs to be a little bit better. Not crapping on the kid or anything like that. We just want to see him make a couple of tweaks. and then I think he's going to be up here again sooner rather than later. So really no worries on that. No surprise he's back in the WHL. We're just going to hope that he plays real well
Starting point is 00:21:29 and we'll track his progress here on the Locked-on Penguins podcast. But that's going to do it for the second segment. Coming up to end the show, it's Wednesday. Yins know what that means. It's time for one of our favorite segments, Warrior Home at Wednesday where Pat and I will give out our weekly MVP, and that's coming up right after this. all right we're back here on the wednesday edition of locked on penguins i am patrick damp stealing
Starting point is 00:22:00 the host's chair from my good pal and co-host hunter hoodies like hunter said before we went to break it's one of our favorite segments because it's wednesday and that means we give out our MVP of the week as part of warrior helmet wednesday if you're not new here. Warrior Helmet Wednesday, as I just said, it's our MVP of the week and it's us paying homage to the 2016 Stanley Cup winning penguins where during that season, both in the regular season and throughout their run to the Stanley Cup, they would give out their MVP of the game in a winning effort with a warrior helmet. So we do that right here on the locked on penguins podcast. Hunter, this was an interesting week because the penguins are playing
Starting point is 00:22:49 really well. There are a lot of candidates for the Warrior Helmet this week because it has been a damn good week in the world of the Pittsburgh Penguins. But I'm going to start with mine. And if you are a listener of this show consistently and you paid attention to our show this week so far, I have already told you who my Warrior Helmet Wednesday pick is. And I am going with head coach Dan News. And the reason being, when this team was, in its losing streak, it would have been extremely easy for Dan Mews, the coaching staff, in the front office to react poorly, to panic, to make big changes, to throw everything out and say, we're losing all these games, we got to make all these big changes, but they didn't
Starting point is 00:23:38 do that. They looked at the way they were playing throughout the losing streak. They looked at the way they have been playing overall this season and went, there is a team here that can be competitive. There is a team here that can win games. We are going to stick with it, and we are going to get this team back on track. And what do you know, they come back from the Christmas break, and they have rattled off five straight wins against some pretty good competition, might I add. So my MVP of the week goes to the man behind the bench, Dan Muse. Do some fans still want to fire him? I hope not. I mean, there were some takes out there from some select fans saying, it's time to fire Dammuz, which was preposterous and ridiculous.
Starting point is 00:24:22 You're not firing a first year head coach before game 41 this first season behind the bench. But I love that pick. I think he has been fantastic, a very calming, steady presence behind that bench. I get very much Spencer Carberry rives from him. Carberry, really good coach in Washington. Just their demeanor, I think is pretty similar overall. And I think the Penguins, if this keeps going, the way it has, I think he's going to get Jack Adams consideration at the end of the season.
Starting point is 00:24:53 I did quote tweet this on my Twitter yesterday. He wasn't even in the others receiving votes for the Jack Adams, which I thought was insane if you look at Antiole.com. I'm like, guys, the Penguins are in a playoff spot. No one expected this going into the season. You got to have him at least in the, you know, not even in the top three, but, you know, deserving candidates that are outside of that. You got to have him there. And we know that the Jack Adams Award at this point, isn't coach of the year. The Jack Adams Award is that we thought you were going to stink and you didn't award. Or it's which goalie propped you up.
Starting point is 00:25:26 That has also been a lot of times the coach gets at Jack Adams. Look at the goaltending. Oh, a goalie is like 9, 25, 930. Look at the Penguins, man. They don't have a Connor Hellebuck or an Igor Shisnerkin on this team. I always have to make that joke with the goaltender. But, you know, a lot of times it kind of is true. But I love that pick.
Starting point is 00:25:45 Mine, I think it's overdue. and that is defenseman Eric Carlson. That is my pick for this week. Three points in two games to assist against the Red Wings on last Thursday and then gets an assist on Cindy Crosby's game winner against Columbus on Sunday. He was on Bath Salts, that entire game against the Blue Jackets. There is one heap in particular that I talked about on the show. I'll bring it up again here.
Starting point is 00:26:08 Letang sends back a pretty big saucer pass. Carlson has to kind of corral it right at the center blue line. It hops off his stick, about to go out of his zone. he's able to get it, and then keep it in the zone before the penguins were able to tie the game with 12.8 seconds left, thanks to Ricardo Raquel. He was just everywhere in that game. There was another sequence when he walked right around Boone Jenner with one heck of a deke, rang a shot right off the post. He was fantastic in that game against Detroit as well, had that shoot-first mentality that led to Blake Lazotte's goal. A little bit of luck just because it went off.
Starting point is 00:26:44 It was a puck-don-wide moment, went off a Red Wings player. in the net, but he still made that happen with that shoot-first mentality at the point. I know the Red Wings title later before Crystal Teng won it, but it was still really nice play from him. I am just loving the way that he is playing right now, three goals, 31 points and 41 games. So he gets my warrior helmet for this week. It was a tough call. There's a lot of very deserving candidates.
Starting point is 00:27:07 We could have given it to Brazil again, Anthony Mantha. Sidney Crosby could have gotten another one for that awesome overtime winner. He continues to play amazing as well. I could have given it to anyone on the fourth line, Stuart Skinner, but I gave it this week to Eric Carlson. No, that's a great pick. And we're running a little heavy on time, so I don't want to do a whole deep dive on Carlson
Starting point is 00:27:29 and his history as a penguin. But if there's one thing I have noticed this season more than anything, the more I go back and watch his footage, he's honestly playing more within himself than he has the past couple of years. putting aside all the coaching stuff and everything else that's happened over the past couple of seasons with Eric Carlson, there were a lot of moments over the past few seasons where it almost felt like Carlson was trying to do too much. He was trying to take over games and moments where he didn't need to.
Starting point is 00:28:04 You look at his game this year and he's just doing what he does best within his abilities. And what do you know? He's been their best defenseman. and it's not particularly close. So I've loved his game this year, top to bottom. You obviously get your boneheaded moments, your head scratching moments with him, but that's the Eric Carlson experience.
Starting point is 00:28:30 And it's at its best, like it is this year, when the good is greatly outweighing the bad, and it has for the majority of this season. That's a great pick by you, Hunter. Let's take a look if you're watching us on YouTube, at our Warrior Helmet Wednesday tracker for the season. Captain Sidney Crosby leads the pack with four this season. Evgeny Malkin and Justin Brzoe right behind the captain with three.
Starting point is 00:28:59 And then we got a whole bunch of people with two. Kyle Dubus, Ben Kindle, Eric Carlson, Dan Mews, and Sergey Murshov. And then with one a piece, we've got Anthony Mantha, the power play, the penalty kill. and now former Penguins goaltender, Tristan Jari. I may have to take him off the list since he can't get any more Warrior Helmets since he's not a penguin, and the reason we're keeping a tracker this season is because at the end of the year, whether that be after Game 82, maybe after some playoff games, who knows how this season's going to go, we'll be handing out some season long MVP's
Starting point is 00:29:39 as a Warrior Helmet for the entire season. Hunter, unless you've got anything else to add, that is going to do it for our Wednesday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast. Hunter and I are going to be back tomorrow with a brand new episode getting you set for the Penguins matchup with the New Jersey Devils and covering anything else that might be happening between now and then. So for Hunter Hodes, I am Patrick Damp. Thank you as always for tuning in. And we will talk to you once again on Thursday. Thank you.
