Starting point is 00:01:32 hasn't been that kind to them historically, the TD Garden in Boston where they will take on one of the NHL's most confusing teams in the Boston Bruins. They currently sit in the second wild card spot in the east with a record of 33, 21, and 5. Here's the rub, though. TD Garden being a house of horrors for the Pittsburgh Penguins, they just need to get in line because the Boston Bruins at TD Garden this year, 22, 8, and 1. This is a team at home that very infrequently loses. For the Penguins, though, this is going to have to be much like it was earlier this year,
Starting point is 00:02:17 a game of patience because the Boston Bruins, they don't have a very deep roster, they don't have a ton of talent, but they are disciplined, they play low event hockey, they wait to capitalize on your mistakes. And when they do, they put you in a vice and they put you to sleep. You kind of almost have to play low event hockey when you have a roster like this. And yeah, there's still some really good high end talent there. David Posternak, one of the five best pure goal scores in the NHL. He is fantastic.
Starting point is 00:02:49 And he is having yet, Pat, another marvelous season with 22 goals and 72 points. Morgan Geeky has just completely come out of nowhere this year, 33 goals and 55 points in 58 games. He has been awesome. Charlie McAvoy with five goals and 41 points overall. All those three have been good. And yeah, there's some other players that have double-digit goals this season. Pat, you know, Elias Linholm has double-digit goals. Pavel Zaka, Victor Arvinson, Fraser, Mitten, Casey, Middustadt, etc.
Starting point is 00:03:17 But the main three that you always have to watch out for are McAvoy, geeky and post-wrong. And then, of course, Jeremy Sleman and Net is having a better season, 9.03% 2.89 goals against average. It's a far crying from last year, Pat, where felt like just that whole situation with training camp and the contract just really derailed his season. He wasn't the same. Comes back this year looking much better and they're in a playoff spot. Their underlying numbers are not very good. You know, they're 27th and expected goal share at 5 on 5 or 20th and shot attempts, but they're in the top
Starting point is 00:03:52 10 in actual goals for. So they are badly outperforming some of their underlying numbers. and Pat, they're top 10 in goals against five on five. They're doing a really nice job, being disciplined, playing really good lockdown defense in their own zone. And all of that was on display when these two teams met back in January. You remember that game. Boston's lone goal they scored. Pretty lucky.
Starting point is 00:04:17 There's a bounce off the post off Skinner and in. Otherwise, they didn't really do much to really sniff another goal in that game. The Penguins just weren't able to generate much office. which has been weird because this has been one of the best offensive teams in the league this year. But the Bruins, they were content to clog everything up in the neutral zone and put three guys back at the blue line. And they were daring the Penguins to try and play dump and chase hockey, try to go low to high. And penguins just weren't able to do it. So they're going to have to make, I think, a couple of adjustments, excuse me, for this game to try and break down the Bruins'ins' defensive structure.
Starting point is 00:04:50 It reminded me a lot of Claude Julian hockey when the Bruins used to play under Claude Julian. So again, it's figuring out ways to really, you know, beat that trap kind of in the neutral zone and just get the puck past the three players that they're going to put at the blue line and just go to work down low. That's what I really want to see from the Penguins tonight is start getting to work down low, getting their cycle game going. And then, you know, obviously getting more net front traffic because I don't think they did enough of that with Jonas Corpus. The Penguins had a couple of chances in that game back in January, but they were very few and far between. And it was a frustrating game when it came to the penguin generating just because you haven't really seen the penguins shut down like that a lot this season. So again, a couple adjustments are in order here for this one. One of the biggest problems the last time they played Boston was not so much, at least in my estimation, that they got shut down.
Starting point is 00:05:47 It was that they played right into the Bruins hands. They played right into that trap game. They tried to go to dump and chase, which is fun. but they kind of forgot the chase part of it all. They pretty much just sent one guy. They were outnumbered. Boston quickly broke it out. They would clog up the neutral zone.
Starting point is 00:06:05 For the penguins against the team like the Bruins, when they play that one three or one four, or however, they're going to stack up the neutral zone, you essentially have to double down on what makes you so successful as a team this year. And that's a heavy puck support system. You're going to have to use short, quick passes through the neutral zone with puck support, making sure that you're attacking them with numbers. Because if, again, you try to go to the dump and chase style against the team that's playing the trap, you are just going to be outnumbered from the jump. So they can't get into that kind of game with Boston tonight because they are well equipped to defend it.
Starting point is 00:06:48 And it's what they want their opponents to do because it's how they're going to capitalize. on those mistakes. Plus, if they play Jeremy Swayman, just try to take a couple shots from the red line and see what happens. He's notoriously not too great with those as we saw over at the Olympics. But, I mean, at the end of the day, the penguins have the talent advantage here tonight against the Bruins. The thing that they can't do, though, is get impatient,
Starting point is 00:07:17 because that is exactly what the Bruins are also going to try to do. They're going to try to lock you in a quagmine, They're going to try to make you play this boring, frustrating, low event hockey. It's exactly what they did under Claude Julian. It gave me, that last game gave me such 2013 vibes from that series. You remember that quite well. I think every fan that listens to slash watches the show. Every fan that follows this team anywhere remembers that series quite well.
Starting point is 00:07:43 I felt like I was watching a carbon copy of that series. And it was so frustrating just because like you see what the penguins are trying to do, Pat. But they weren't able to just because the Bruins were frustrated. them shift after shift, putting three guys at the blue line, daring them to basically just come into the offensive zone. And the thing is, it's easy to get frustrated by that style of play. If you're Dan Mews, if you're the Penguins tonight, you attack it as basically, all right, you guys want to be boring.
Starting point is 00:08:12 You guys want to play a boring style. We'll play it right there with you and we'll let our talent take over. We'll try to get into your zone. We're going to hold the puck there. we're going to make you chase us and we're going to let the talent win out over you. Because realistically, and I can't believe I'm saying this about this Penguins team all the way into March, they are deep. They are a little bit faster than I think anybody would have expected. We're not going to accuse them of being the fastest team in the league because they're not,
Starting point is 00:08:44 but they've got better foot speed than expected. if you can trap Boston in their zone for extended shifts on multiple occasions, that is the way that you beat this team because even though both Swayman and Corpusolo are having fine enough years, these aren't the Bruins that have, say, Tim Thomas or Tuka Rask who can step up and steal you a game. Swamen occasionally. But in this juncture, if you play this game the way you should against the team that plays low event hockey, and it ends up in a game where Jeremy Swayman steals it, you tip your cap, you keep it moving. But it can't be like last time where you play right into their system.
Starting point is 00:09:35 Right. It was just too predictable. It felt like from the Penguins. So that's why I'm hoping for a damn use to change a couple of things up for this game. also in that game. And again, not to end all be all problem. They did have Kevin Hayes playing a pretty prominent role up in the lineup there, Pat. Again, I'm not blaming the loss on Kevin Hayes. I am just simply saying that he was playing a very prominent role up in the lineup.
Starting point is 00:09:57 Now he's not in it. You are still pretty deep forward, even without Zendie Crosby. How does that look now against this Bruins team? That's something I'm going to be looking for. I also want to see the power play continue to cook. It has been fan-freaking-tastic. since we came off the Olympic break. Todd Nelson, my kudos to you for working overtime during the Olympic break.
Starting point is 00:10:19 I want to see that continue to go. And Pat, I know we didn't get to it on our Monday episode, but the penalty kill has also been lights out as of late. One of the best units in the league, I want to see that continue in this one. Last time these two teams played the Penguins, P-K, was really good in that game. So, that has to continue here. We'll have to see which goalie starts for the Penguins. They have their morning skate going on right now.
Starting point is 00:10:41 We're recording at about 1115. A.m. on Tuesday. So I'm sure we're going to get an announcement here by the end of the show. If I had to give a strict guess, I'll go Skinner just because Sheelov started over the weekend against, well, he started the second half of the back to back, I should say. But we'll see. Maybe they do go to Sheelogs and kind of reward him for that shutout. But time will tell. This is still going to be a tough test. This is the first of two meetings against the Bruins this week before the Bruins come here on Sunday. Hold on to a lot of those thoughts, Hunter, because we got to throw it to break here.
Starting point is 00:11:13 and we got a lot more to talk about, about this Penguins, Bruins game tonight, because it is a big one, and it's got some big implications for a lot of things going on right now. We're going to get into all of that when we come back right after this. Before we do that, though, we've got to tell you about our first sponsor, and that is indeed.

We're back here on the Tuesday edition of Locked on Penguins. I'm Patrick Damp right alongside Hunter Hodes. you brought up something pretty big that we got to dive into getting into tonight's game against the Boston Bruins Hunter. And that is special teams because this really could be a big maker break for this game against the Bruins
Starting point is 00:13:30 because they are on opposite ends of the spectrum from the Penguins. With the Penguins, they've got the league's second best penalty kill at 84.3%. They've got the league's third best power play at 26.8%. Then you go over and look at the Bruins. Fourth in the league on the power play at a cool 26%, but they are near the bottom of the league in penalty kill, which is astounding considering how good defensively this Bruins team is at 76.7. So for the Penguins, you're probably not going to get many power play opportunities
Starting point is 00:14:11 against the Boston Bruins, especially this iteration of them. because while they do play a physical style, while they do play a frustrating style, they play a disciplined style. So they don't take a ton of penalties. But when they do, they're struggling to defend them. And when you've got the league's third best power play, you've got to make the Bruins pay. Right.
Starting point is 00:14:35 And the penguins are coming off a performance against Vegas where they made the Golden Knights PK look pretty amateurish, to be honest. Two power play goals in that game. Again, if you want to say three, that's fine. because one of the goals literally came five seconds after the penalty expired. So, you know, to a T, it's basically three power play goals against Vegas. You know, they had the one against the Rangers. The other one was disallowed.
Starting point is 00:14:57 The devil's game, I thought the power play was starting to look a bit better. So I just really want to give even more credit again to Todd Nelson for simplifying that unit even more, especially without Sydney Crosby. And it's looking really deadly again as we get into the heart of the Mark's schedule here. It's going to have to be like that again tonight. the Penguins want to win that special teams battle against a lackluster Bruins penalty kill. The Bruins Power Play, you mentioned it. One of the best units in the league, Pat.
Starting point is 00:15:24 This unit is very good at 26%, directly behind the Penguins, but Penguins also have the Equalizer. Second best penalty kill in the league, only behind Chicago. As I mentioned in the first segment, Bruins had six power play opportunities in that first meeting. They went 0 for 6. Penguins PK did a great job on that unit. So, you know, if they get a couple of powerplay, I don't think they're going to get six power play opportunities tonight.
Starting point is 00:15:50 But still if they get, you know, two, three, Penguins PK is still going to have to get the job done there. Also, the morning skit is happening right now. We do have a couple of updates. Blake Lazot is not out there. We don't know what's going on. Nothing seemed to be, you know, wrong with him at the end of the Vegas game. But, you know, we said that about other injuries before Pat, where it looks like, oh, nothing's wrong with this player. And then the player apparently is.
Starting point is 00:16:14 hurt and he's day to day. He's out for like a week or two, something like that. But he's not out there. Also, Ben Kindle has moved up to the top line center with Rickel and Brian Russ, because Kevin Hayes right now is centering Anthony Manple and Justin Brazos. So I know what I said about Kevin Hayes in the first segment. You potentially disregard a little bit of that as the lines had not been tweeted out yet. So it's a little bit of old news. But the lines right now without Blake LaZot, Pat, Raquel, Kindle, and Rust. You have Malkin, Chinakov, and Novak. them with Hayes and Brazo. And then you have Connor Dewer, Avery
Starting point is 00:16:49 Hayes, and Nollachari. We'll see what Damu says about Blake Lazot after the morning escape. But if he is out, that is still a pretty big loss because this, I will say, I know he is only a bottom six player. This is a different team with him in the lineup versus him
Starting point is 00:17:04 not a lineup. Great on the PK. He helps drag the team into the fight, plays his ass off every shift. I just hope that everything is okay because they can't afford to lose him. Yeah, that'd be a big loss. Maybe he's just hanging out, having a coffee, getting ready for tonight's game, not taking the option of the skate.
Starting point is 00:17:22 So we'll keep an eye on that. But also, if for nothing else, even if we put that to the side, this is deserved for Ben Kindle. We have talked about his game up and down. We have been so impressed by it. And I said it on our most recent show. It's time for him to get that look. If for no other reason, just to see if he can handle it.
Starting point is 00:17:43 He has been passing every test since entering the NHL with flying colors. Now putting him on the top line in the absence of Sidney Crosby, it's one more test for him to take into potentially pass. And given the way he has played the last few months, Hunter, I see him doing well. I don't want anybody to get confused here. He's not going to replace Sidney Crosby. No.
Starting point is 00:18:09 He is not going to be the next 87. but for the next two, three weeks, it's a pretty good fill in to have. I agree. And also a couple of defensive pairing shakeups as well. We still have Watherspoon Carlson. They have put Ryan Shea with Chris Latang and they have put Sam Gerard with Connor Clifton,
Starting point is 00:18:31 which I got to say, man, if that does happen tonight, I am very okay with that. I was totally fine with trying Gerard with Latang. Peak Chaos pair reminded me a bit of Pittsburgh. much of Matheson Latang for back in the day. It was a little too chaotic for me, man. I think putting Ryan Shea back up with Latang, Shea, who's been really good as of late, I think you can reward him for that while just getting Gerard a bit more comfortable in the lineup. He can be that offensive presence on the third pair with Connor Clifton, who he's more of
Starting point is 00:19:02 that stay at home, physical presence on that third pair. I just think overall it flows better. So those are my thoughts on the pairing. I'm totally good with it. At least it looks like that's what's floating around on social media right now. Yeah, I think at this point, it's not the worst idea to put Gerard down there just for no other reason. I don't think he's been bad since becoming a penguin, so I don't want to get that twisted. But it does kind of feel like he needs a little bit of time to adjust to the system that the penguins are playing and adjust to the way that he has to have a role in it.
Starting point is 00:19:37 So if you shelter him on that third pair with Clifton for a few games, let him kind of rediscover himself, figure out what he needs to do, where he needs to be. I do think there is some value in putting him with Latang. You can see some chemistry there building, but with where this team is, with how precarious their spot is, it's not like, funny enough, it's not like it's the team he came from in Colorado where they've built such a cushion that they can throw some stuff at the wall and see what sticks. with the penguins right now, every point is precious.
Starting point is 00:20:14 So let him get his feet wet, let him adapt to where he is. And then once he starts to be a little bit more comfortable, let's try that latang pairing out again and see what happens. But for now, I like this a lot. We'll keep an eye on what happens with Lazot. If something breaks, while we're still recording, we'll obviously update it on it before we end the show. If not, you're probably listening to this and you're screaming at your
Starting point is 00:20:40 phone or your radio that, yeah, we know what's happening. Okay, guys, enough, move on. But that is going to do it for this middle segment. Penguins, Bruins tonight, 7 o'clock at TD Garden. You can catch the game here in Pittsburgh on SportsNet, Pittsburgh. Hunter and I obviously are going to recap that game on our Wednesday episode. But we've got a lot more to talk about here on Locked on Penguins, including what's going on with Hvgeny Malkin.
Starting point is 00:21:08 And can Stuart Skinner be a potential trade? ship. We're going to talk about that when we get back right after this. Back here on the Tuesday edition of Locked-on Penguins, I'm Patrick Damp. That's Hunter Hodes. And we briefly touched on it yesterday, Hunter. At the end of a segment, it was just kind of a throwaway. We didn't really get a lot to it. Let's dig into it now, though. According to Hvgeny Malkin, there has not been any progress made on a new deal for him going into next year. Now, I actually spent most of the day yesterday after our show thinking about this.
Starting point is 00:21:55 And I think a lot of people, including Malkins Camp and everybody else, are kind of looking at this the wrong way. I think that they fully intend to bring him back because we set it on the show. If you give him a $5 million deal, you still have more than $40 million in cap space going into next summer. You don't have a ton of moves to make cap wise that are going to put you back that you really need to hold up space for. Here's something that, again, I don't have any insider knowledge on this.
Starting point is 00:22:31 I haven't talked to anybody about it, but I did, my mind went to this place. I think they fully intend to bring them back. But I think they're working on some stuff behind the scenes for this off season. namely Jason Robertson. Again, I know that we already talked about that, but I look at it this way. They're looking at it from a standpoint of, we have to make a potential massive move.
Starting point is 00:22:58 And they're in the position right now where they can kind of do whatever they want going into the Jason Robertson idea where they can swing a trade if Dallas is on board. They can offer sheet him to a point. Don't think that part is happening. It's probably going to be a trade. if that happens. But hear me out on this. You look at all the picks that they have. They own all of
Starting point is 00:23:19 their own picks. So if they want to do that, they're able to do it. And all of that is, I think, being worked on. And they're looking at Gino and going, listen, it's going to happen. Don't you worry. We're working on this. So I think it's coming. I just think it's kind of an aspect of it that people are kind of not noticing. I hear you. I think even if it's not wrong, Robertson this off season. I do think they are potentially planning something big, you know, to really put this more into high gear, get, you know, or try to get a younger player that can be here with a lot of term for the foreseeable
Starting point is 00:23:56 future, something like that. No, again, whether that's Robertson or someone else, I do think if Robertson is made available via trade and that the stars can't get them signed, I think they're going to be one of the first teams that calls, in my opinion. I don't think it's going to be an offer sheet or anything like that. that with Gino, you know, there's also the report, Elliot Freeman touched on this on TNT for the post game that he and Kyle Dubas were going to sit down early this week and kind of discuss a couple of things.
Starting point is 00:24:24 You know, Josh O'i from the Athletic, he confirmed that in his story on Monday to, you know, at least, you know, maybe talk a little bit of the contract, but I know JP, it doesn't sound like JP Barry was going to be there for that conversation. So if you're going to bring up numbers, you kind of want the agent to be there in that circumstance. I think it was just going to be a one-to-one conversation with. Dubus and then Malkin and then maybe at some point, you know, before this season, maybe, you know, penguins go back on their word in quotation marks, whatever, and get this done. But I still think this is going to get done before July 1.
Starting point is 00:24:56 It's too important not to, in my opinion, just because, you know, he has said repeatedly, he wants to come back. He has shown that he has what it takes to play next year. He has a really good winger in Igor Chinakov. He's playing great on a nightly basis. again, why not give him a one year deal, five to five point five million with a full no move clause? And say for example that, you know, maybe his camp is, you know, really wanting a two-year term. Okay, maybe you do that.
Starting point is 00:25:26 And then you extend his contract by another year. And then potentially those two go out together with their contracts that following season. Again, I'm just spitballing ideas right now. But I do think this is eventually going to get done overall. Now, you brought up Stuart Skinner. I did see he was number six on Frank Ceravali's trade bait board. And I wrote about this for the hockey news late last night into today. The only way I am moving Stuart Skinner is if I am getting a return that you truly can't say no to.
Starting point is 00:25:55 And I think for me, and people can yell at me at the comments for this, I think it's a second plus maybe a veteran goaltender coming back, a player at a different position, something like that. But it has to start with me with a second round pick. like if you're not getting that back, there's just no reason to even continue these conversations. However, you know, I would prefer to keep him, though. I think his experience can go a long way. He can mentor someone like Archer Sheelovs, who, you know, by initial standards, is still a rookie.
Starting point is 00:26:27 And you can never have enough goaltending this time of year. Not going to lie, man, it spooks me to think about a world where say they do trade Skinner and you have Murashov and Sheelovs for a stretch run and potentially a playoff run. And I think the world of Sergey Murshov, I think he is going to be a good NHL goaltender. He is going to be on this team next season.
Starting point is 00:26:49 He's had a really great year in Wilkesbury. But you're going to ask him to play in these very high-stakes games when he only has four games of NHL experience. It's a risk, man. That's a really big risk. I know Pat some people will come back to me like, well, you know, Matt Murray this, Matt Murray, that. I just think it's a little bit of a different circumstance for me.
Starting point is 00:27:07 So just tread carefully. If you get a dream return, okay, that's one thing. If not, keep him. Skinner has a lot of playoff experience that I think can prove worthwhile to this team. I do like that you brought up that Murray comparison because here's the difference. Matt Murray was playing behind a bona fide Stanley Cup contending team. The 2016 and 2017 Penguins were genuinely great. Who do they also have?
Starting point is 00:27:37 in his corner, though, Pat. Oh, he had, he had Mark Andre Fleury. Yes, that's also a big difference to me. Pretty easy to learn from that guy when, when he's still around. But I also, I look at it this way, and I agree with your point that unless it's a dream return, you hold on to him because this season is found money. And you already know that you've got a potential young starter in Archer Shilovs, who I don't think he's going to command.
Starting point is 00:28:07 too much of a raise going into being an RFA. He's definitely going to get one because he's played really well this year. In fact, he was just named the second star of the week for the NHL, for how great of a week that he had. But I don't think he's suddenly going to command a bunch of money. So that'll be real easy to bring him back. You can let Stuart Skinner walk because I do think he's going to be in demand this off season because he's got all that playoff experience.
Starting point is 00:28:35 he's shown that he's at the very least a replacement level starting goaltender, and a lot of teams need that. So you don't have to throw a pile of money at them. And if you have your young starting goalie who's getting his feet wet in the NHL in Archer Shilov, paired with your young stud and Sergey Mureshov, it's going to be kind of similar to what we saw when Jari was still here and what we're seeing right now with Shilovs and Skinner, but with more talent, where these two guys are going to push one another.
Starting point is 00:29:07 One guy's going to go out, have himself a big night, and then the next night, the other goalie has to go out and punch back or else he's going to risk not getting the net. So to wrap it all up in a fine bow, I agree with your point that I understand the excitement and want for Sergei Murashov to be here, but you've got Stuart Skinner, and you might as well hold on to him.
Starting point is 00:29:32 and kind of like the trade deadline as a whole, unless you're getting unbelievable offers, this season is house money top to bottom, treat it like you're sitting at the blackjack table and on a heater and just let it ride, just continue to let it ride and see what happens. Yeah, and I think also with Skinner, he's going to be one of the better goaltending options available
Starting point is 00:29:56 at the deadline for teams that need a goalie, but unless those teams are getting really desperate, and throwing you again a dream offer slash an offer you can't refuse. I'm keeping him and rolling with him and she loves going into the playoffs. Again, you can never have enough goaltending this time of year. Murshov is also playing in really high stakes games in Wilkesbury. Wilkeshire is going to be a contender for the Calder Cup this year. You can get him in those high stakes games in the playoffs, finish off the season,
Starting point is 00:30:26 and then he's going to be ready to go for next season because I agree. As of right now, I don't foresee Skinner coming. back, which would open the door for Murshov to make this team, at least as a backup slash 1B for next season. His time is coming. I just, you know, don't want to rush it for the sake of it. I know. I sound like what I did when we talked about Ben Kendall, and now he's lighting up the NHL. But still, goalies, it's a little bit different just because it's very voodoo. So I'm just preaching a little bit more patience. And last thing, it'll be swaying for Boston tonight. Skinner first goal you off for the Penguins. He looks like he's going to get the start.
