Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins - Penguins make it SIX IN A ROW with a win over the Devils!

Episode Date: January 9, 2026

The Penguins got their sixth straight win on Thursday night with a big win over the New Jersey Devils. Hunter and Patrick begin the show recapping an extremely solid effort against the Devils (1:45). ...Despite a slow start, goaltender Stuart Skinner kept the Penguins in it, and then for the next 40 minutes, the Penguins took over the game. Thanks to big goals from the fourth line and Evgeni Malkin, the Penguins have now beaten every divisional opponent at least once. Then, the Penguins will be back in action this weekend, starting on Saturday against another struggling team, the Calgary Flames (12:55). Much like New Jersey, the Penguins will need to take advantage of a team that has lost four in a row. Finally, the Penguins’ big weekend wraps up on Sunday in Boston where they’ll take on a top-heavy Bruins squad. Pat, make it six.
Starting point is 00:01:08 The Penguins have now won six in a row after beating the Devils four to one on Thursday night. And with that, the Penguins have now beaten every single team in the Metro at least once this season. They are eight and one and three against the Metro. Remember Pat, this team only won nine games against Metro teams last year. They're only one win away from Equingland and we're basically a little over. over the halfway point of the 2025, 2026 season. That's a really underrated storyline that's not being talked about enough is the way the penguins have played against their divisional teams this year.
Starting point is 00:01:42 But let's get into this game as a whole. The first period, very rusty, not good enough. I think every player on that team owed Stewart Skinner a steak dinner because he was the only reason why the penguins came out of that first period with a lead. He was making 10 bell saved after 10 bell saves. You could tell the penguins are really trying to get their legs back. they just sometimes that's what happens when you haven't played in a few days in the devils you knew that they were going to come out at least with a better effort than what they showed against the
Starting point is 00:02:11 islanders and also this team just got manhandled and once the second period started though it was all penguins they skated the devils right off the rank the numbers also support that path penguins had 81% of the shot attempts at five on five in that period 79% of the scoring chances 83% of the high danger chances as well. Great period. And then in the third, I thought at times they were a little passive. You expected the devils to make at least a little bit of a push. But once the Penguins got that fourth goal, it was game over at that point.
Starting point is 00:02:43 So again, the fourth line, they were tremendous. We'll touch on that in a little bit. Evgeny Malkin, he gets a goal with his comeback. Connor Dewar gets another one in Eric Carlson. He starts things off with a goal at one time, awesome release, but also Jake Allen was a bit off his angle there. I think he could have done a better job with that shot. But all in all, Pat, another really solid win against a team that's chasing the penguins in the standings. A lot of reports out of New Jersey that I saw from the devil's broadcast on MSG,
Starting point is 00:03:14 they had the same take as you about the Carlson goal that, yeah, it was a sweet release. It was a great shot, but Allen should not give that up. So while Carlson deserves his kudos because this was another game where I feel very safe in saying he was maybe the best player on the ice for either team. It was another spectacular performance from Carlson. He has really been a revelation all season long. We also do have to touch on Stuart Skinner because he wasn't the reason the penguins won. The penguins won because in the second and third period, they were the better team. They were just doing everything a lot better than the devils could. And the devils did not have an answer.
Starting point is 00:04:02 But in the first period, while I'm not going to go as far as you and say that he was making 10 bell save after 10 bell save, because the devils were getting some chances, but they weren't getting a plus chances. They were scoring opportunities. Let's not get carried away here. He wasn't stopping muffins. There was a breakaway in there that he had to come up pretty big.
Starting point is 00:04:22 I will say that too. That was one of them. And he, But he kept the penguins afloat while they found their legs. And then as soon as Connor Dewar scores getting sprung out of the penalty box by an elite pass by Ricard Raquel, the devils you could just see. The shoulders started to slump. The strides got a little shorter. And it's exactly what we talked about on the preview episode.
Starting point is 00:04:47 This is a very, a very fragile, struggling team. As soon as they gave that goal up after failing to score. on a power play to tie the game, their mentality and their effort immediately went to, we are out of answers, and here we go again. But all in all, it was another really solid win by the Penguins. And it was a very, very valuable two points because a team that they're chasing, Philadelphia Flyers only managed to get a point out of a tough game against the Leafs. So this helps them tremendously.
Starting point is 00:05:23 Also, at the same time, the Islanders also only got one point against the Predators last night. They have started a seven-game road trip. So again, I keep saying it, the teams that you really want to chase down if you're the Penguins, the Islanders and the Flyers, both those teams are also very flawed, even though they're off two good starts the season as well. The Penguins, two points behind the Islanders. They have two games in hand on them, and then only one week behind the Flyers as well. So again, second place in the Metro, definitely still very viable for this team if they
Starting point is 00:05:51 really keep it up. The Penguins will play Philadelphia next week. We're going to touch on the weekend games first, but we'll get to that Flyers game next week because that's going to be a huge game with obviously a lot of implications and all that good stuff. But you said about Eric Carlson, man, I thought he was sensational in all three zones. He absolutely let it rip on that first goal to open the scoring.
Starting point is 00:06:13 Connor Dewar, really nice goal there. And then how about that goal in the third period? We'll get to Gino's going in just a second because I felt like he was very, rusty in the first period. But once he found his legs, you saw him get pissed off. He was being a puck count. It was only a matter of time before he was going to score more on that in a second. But how about that fourth line, man? The way they were able to forecheck, cycle. And then Noah Chari, very much the shack name of, I apologize, I was not familiar with your game. What a pass to Blake Lazade, who has a wide open cage. He's going to bury that every time.
Starting point is 00:06:48 this fourth line continues to play so well for this team. It's the most fun fourth line this team has had in years pat. Honestly, going back to the 2016 or 2017 fourth lines with Matt Cullen down there. This is a team that is very, this is a line, excuse me, that is very competent defensively. And the way that they're able to out cycle teams down low, work at low to high, and really just be a pain in the ass whenever they're out there, it's awesome man and it continues to play so well for this scene it's a threat there's no two ways about it when usually you want to play your fourth line minutes to even but the way this fourth
Starting point is 00:07:29 line has been playing they are very much on the plus side and any time they come on to the ice they are not just there to eat minutes they are there to be a line that pushes the effort forward and keeps things moving and you just just it there's no secret sauce to it. They are just energy. They are energy personified. They are a million miles an hour. They're physical. They're not afraid to shoot the puck. And they know that they are not out there just to play defense. They are out there to play all 200 feet. And just with each passing game, they do multiple things that make you really happy that you have a fourth line that is this viable.
Starting point is 00:08:15 Right. And I just love the way they compliment one another. I love how they each understand their individual assignment when they're out there. And they always weed off each other so well too. So this is a line that's cooking. It's a lot of fun to watch. Now, Pat, as I tease, let's get to have Genie Malkins goal. What an absolute clapper. That was a vintage Gino goal. If we've ever seen it, the celebration was also great. As I said, first period, he looked like he was very old out there as to someone who hadn't played in a month. then you could very well see it. Also looked a little uncomfortable on the wing, but once the second period happened again, he got his legs back. He looked a lot more comfortable, and he was being a puck town. He was getting frustrated by some of the devils,
Starting point is 00:08:57 and it's like, hey, I would not upset this guy. We've seen it time and time again. When he gets upset, he goes into even more of bully mode, and that's exactly what he did. The penguins get a very rare five on three. We haven't seen them get many five on threes this year.
Starting point is 00:09:12 And of getting Malkin, he makes no mistake what that pucked. Allen. Sorry, man. You had no, absolutely no shot at saving that. And the final 40 minutes, man, Gino was very much, you know, nice to see him get a goal in his first game back. If my memory serves me correctly and my notes are right, that was only the second five on three that the penguins have had this season. So they're operating in a 50% clip at five on three, which is nice. I could be wrong on that, though. If I am, please correct me in the comments. But yeah, it was a tale of two Gino's on Thursday night.
Starting point is 00:09:46 The first period, there was a lot of rust. He was kind of careless with the puck, wasn't doing the things that make Gino, Gino. And then he went Gino Machino in the final two periods. He was a bully. He hounded the puck. He was intercepting passes, reading the play really well. And that goal, that was a month worth of frustration let out on that one-timer. I don't think that he could have gotten any more on that shot if he tried.
Starting point is 00:10:17 And God bless Jake Allen for trying. You weren't stopping it, buddy. That was predestined as soon as he wound up in Sid Somm. It was game over. But loved his game in the second and third period, much like I did the rest of the team. So again, no crazy in-depth analysis here. they played a really solid game.
Starting point is 00:10:40 They beat a team they needed to beat. And here they are. They're right in the race. Yep. They're going to try to make it seven in a row on Saturday against a flames team that is really struggling right now. I also want to shout out Rickel. I thought he played very well as well.
Starting point is 00:10:55 And Chris Lattang, I thought this was one of his better games of the season. He continues to, at least to me, or the last few games, he's looking more and more comfortable next to Brett Kulak. So that's another underrated thing to at least watch if you haven't watched it enough yet. But that's going to do it for this first segment. Coming up in the second segment, as I said, the Penguins will try to make it seven in a row on Saturday against a struggling flames team.
Starting point is 00:11:18 And Pat and I are going to preview that game for you guys right after this. But before we get to that, we have to tell you all about our first sponsor, which is game time. There is nothing like being near the ice during hockey season, the speed, the hits, the atmosphere, it's unmatched. Watching at home is great, but being in the building is a completely different experience. The only thing that's used to get in the way was actually getting. tickets, long queues, endless screens, and prices changing at checkout. But that's why the game time app gives the advantage back to fans.
Starting point is 00:11:50 It's the hack for unlocking amazing NHL tickets and experiences in just a few taps. I put up the game time app to check out upcoming NHL games, including tomorrow against the flames, and was surprised at how fast it was to find great seats. The app, it is very easy to use. Browsing, comparing, and buying tickets took only a few minutes. One of my favorite features is seeing the view from my seat before buying so I know exactly what I am getting before checking out. The zone deals, they are also clutch. You choose the section.
Starting point is 00:12:20 Game Time picks the seats and you save even more. Take the guesswork out of buying NHL tickets with GameTime down the GameTime app. Create an account and use code locked on NHL for $20 off your first purchase. I am one of your host, Hunter Hodes, joined by my host, Patrick Damp and Pat. The flames are a very weird team this year.
Starting point is 00:12:55 They were coming into the new year, at least a little bit hot. You know, December 31st, their last game of 2025, they beat the Flyers 5 to 1. They had won three straight and also five of their last six games. They got up to 18 and 18 and 4, but they have not been playing well since the calendar flip at 2026. They have lost four in a row. have given up four plus goals in all of those games, including Thursday nights 4 to 1 loss in Boston.
Starting point is 00:13:20 They're in the midst of a pretty big Eastern swing right now, and they will play the Penguins at PBJ Paints Arena on Saturday at 3.30. This is a Flames team. Still, you look at their record, it's not very good. They still have some good players on this team. Nazim Khadry, even though he only has eight goals, he's a lot more of a playmaker. He has 32 points in 44 games.
Starting point is 00:13:41 Rasmus Anderson has nine goals and 27 points in 14. 44 games. I think Anderson at some point is going to get moved. There's been all the rumors about him potentially going to Vegas and all now. We have to see if that comes back to fruition around the trade deadline. But I have to think the flames are going to look to try and move him. You have Michael Backlin who is still there. Matt Coronado, Jonathan Huberto, of course, is still there. Blake Coleman. The one stud on this team that I am a big fan of, even though his numbers aren't that good this year, is goaltender Dustin Wolfe. I think he is going to be a very good goaltender for quite a while in the NHL.
Starting point is 00:14:15 He has played in 35 games this year, only an 898 percentage. But again, he just doesn't really have that good of a team. I think he's going to get the start, though, on Saturday. He can come alive at any moment. I mean, he was great last year for this team. They were in the race for basically all of last season, Pat. And a lot of that was because of the way Wolf was playing. He had such a great year for the flames last year, finished with a 9-10-saver percentage,
Starting point is 00:14:41 2.64 goals against average. He was awesome. So that's really the one big area that you want to focus on for the penguins is getting to Dustin Wolf, obviously slowing down Anderson, Cadre, Hubertoe, excuse me. But this is still a Flames team that's right for the taking just because they have not played well since the calendar flip to 2026. It's a very bizarre team to figure out because you hinted at it before the calendar flipped the 2026.
Starting point is 00:15:08 They looked like they had figured it out. They looked like Huska had them playing some hockey that while it's not the deepest team, it's not the most talented team, they were grinding out wins. They were playing pretty well. And then all of a sudden, as soon as we got into 2026, it just all started to fall apart. And I'm with you on Dustin Wolf. I think this kid is going to be a stud, whether it's in Calgary or somewhere else. And his numbers are very deceptive because this is a lot of.
Starting point is 00:15:40 a flames team that doesn't have a lot in front of them. They're 30th in the league and goals per game at only 2.5, but they're 13th in the league at goals against per game at an even three. So that kind of tells you the story that between Wolf and Devin Cooley, they've got two goalies who play pretty well. They just don't have anybody that can score. And you look at you, much like Thursday night against the Devils, this is a. team that is struggling, that is a little bit fragile. And they've got a lot of up and coming talent in their pipeline. This is going to be a team that's on track to be pretty good in the next couple of years,
Starting point is 00:16:24 but they're not quite there yet. They're in transition, kind of like the penguins. Only difference is they haven't really had that total franchise player. So if you're the penguins, you limit their top six. limit their top line. And this is a team that you can beat. It's very much a game that is there for the taking. You're going to be at home.
Starting point is 00:16:48 If you can get this win, it almost makes Sunday against Boston immaterial. Yeah, I hear you on that. I mean, you look at some of their underlying numbers. 18th in the league in terms of expected goal share at five on five. So a little bit below average. But then when you go to the actual goal rate, 44.7 percent, good for 29th in the league. only ahead of Nashville, St. Louis and New Jersey. And we saw very much on display on Thursday how much trouble the devils have had in terms of
Starting point is 00:17:18 scoring this year. The flames, Pat, it's been very much the same thing. Goals have been hard to come by for this team. Even during the four-game losing streak, Pat, that they've been on, they've only scored six goals in their last four games, including only three in their last three games. They're having a lot of trouble scoring. So for the Penguins, this will be a good opportunity to continue to try to play, lockdown defense like we saw in Detroit
Starting point is 00:17:40 even against New Jersey outside the first period. I thought the penguins, especially in the second, were great at locking things down. They were still a little bit passive in the third, but I still felt like Stewart's Skinner wasn't nearly tested as much as he was in the first period. I also want to see Archer
Starting point is 00:17:56 Shilovs bounce back in this one. I'm assuming he is going to get the start because Dan Muz keeps rotating starts between goaltenders and it's Shilov's turning the rotation. So if he does get the start in this one, I want to see just more consistency. Again, I like the effort I saw down the stretch in Columbus, but I want to see him get off to a better start in some of these games and just have a fully consistent 60 minute effort.
Starting point is 00:18:19 You beat me to the punch on that one. That is one of my biggest keys for Saturday against the flames is Ardor Shilov's has to punch back now because Thursday night, that was another check in the column for Stuart Skinner. Stuart Skinner played extremely well. He has been a playing pretty well in his last couple of starts. And this is now where Sheelov has to assert himself. He has to have a very good start, a very consistent start against the flames to make Dan Mews' job more difficult. He has to give him a more difficult decision.
Starting point is 00:18:57 Do I continue with the rotation? Do I put the saddle on one of these two guys and let them run for a little bit? And if Sheelovs has a bit of a shaky start, this is very much going to be. be the net for Stuart Skinner. So if you're Arter She-Lovs, you got to circle Saturday on the calendar and think I have got to play one of my best games of the season, or I could be watching quite a bit moving forward. Right, because I think you'll see Stuart Skinner become the quote-unquote 1A in this
Starting point is 00:19:27 rotation with the way that he has played his last three starts. So I hear you, I want to see him have a little bit of a bounce back here for the Penguins. But I think that's going to do it for the second segment. up to end the show. Penguins will also play on Sunday. My friends, they'll go up to Boston and take on the Bruins at TD Garden. Also a Bruins team that is flat out weird this year. They're a very strange team too, just like the Flames. Pat and I are going to preview that game against the Bruins right after this. But before we get to that, we have to tell you all about our final
Starting point is 00:20:00 sponsor, which is Fandall. The Wildcar Round is here, and Fandall is officially in playoff mode. I am one of your host, Hunter Hodes. That's my good friend and coach, Patrick Damp, and Pat.
Starting point is 00:21:07 The penguin's second half of the back-to-back will be in Boston against a Bruins team that has been very up, down, up, down. much a roller coaster this year. They'll go on a nice little winning streak. Then they'll lose a bunch of games in a row. And it feels like they've been like rotating throughout that this year. But this is a Bruins team that is very top heavy. If you slow down David Posternak, which is easier said than done, just because he's one of the top goal scores on the planet. And you slow down Morgan Geeky, who is also having an unbelievable season for the Bruins, you will have a very good shot of winning this. Because outside of those two guys, there's just not a lot of full on production from this Bruins team. Yeah, Casey Middleston has 10 goals and 18 points.
Starting point is 00:21:48 Pavel Zaka, same thing. He has 10 goals. But most of the Bruins offense forward at least comes from pasta and comes from Geeky. Pasta this year, 19 goals, 49 points in 39 games. Morgan Geeky, 25 goals, 41 points in 44 games. Again, both have been absolutely outstanding. So if you can really slow down those two guys and kind of just play to a draw on that top line,
Starting point is 00:22:12 I like the Penguins other lines to take advantage of a Bruins team. that again is very top-heavy. You will obviously have to worry about Jeremy Swayman. He has played 30 games this year, has 16 wins, 2.9-1 goals again, his average in a 902, say, percentage. She has been much better this year compared to last year where I just think
Starting point is 00:22:31 with the contract situation, all that stuff, I just don't think he ever really got into a groove. That's if he starts, of course, the Bruins also play on Saturday against the Rangers. That's part of ABC's Hockey Day. They're both. That one is at home. So I actually am curious to see, do the Bruins go swimming that one or do they go Corpusalo?
Starting point is 00:22:50 But as of right now, man, I'm preparing for Jeremy Swaving because he's the better goalie. But still, TBD on that one. Pat, what say you about this Bruins team? I'm going to make a reference that is going to make my good friend Josh Taylor very happy. A former guest of this show, I might also add. If you're the penguins going up against the Bruins, you got to use the. Los Angeles Lakers, Kobe and Shaq defense. When it comes to their top two guys, David Prosternak and Morgan Geeky,
Starting point is 00:23:24 you can let one of them get theirs. If Posternak scores a goal, Geeky scores a goal, however, you can let them get their cookies as long as you shut down the other. You can't let them both go off because we know how good David Posternock is. He is one of the best players in the National Hockey League. he's not quite inevitable, but he's very close. He is that good. So if he scores on you or does something spectacular,
Starting point is 00:23:54 you don't need to hang your head. He does it to everyone. So making sure you don't let both of them impact the game, that's the key to victory. And the thing that's going to be a little bit more of a challenge for the penguins on Sunday is that the penguins play at home against the flames on Saturday. Then they go to Boston.
Starting point is 00:24:16 For Boston, yeah, they're playing a back-to-back, but they're both at TD Gardens. So, yeah, they're going to be a little bit tired as well because they're going to have to play an NHL game on Saturday themselves, but they get to go to their homes, they get to sleep in their own bed, there's no travel. So this is going to be very similar to what we said last week
Starting point is 00:24:38 when the penguins played a back-to-back. you just have to play a simple, solid road game. You don't want to try to do too much. If you don't have options, throw it in the corner, go get it. Don't try to make the complicated play in the defensive zone. High percentage plays, be smart with the puck. It might not be the most exciting hockey, but if you want to take this win streak,
Starting point is 00:25:02 assuming you win on Saturday, to eight, you got to make a couple sacrifices. And I'll add this as well. Boston is one of the teams chasing the penguins right. Yeah. Boston is three points behind the penguins. If they get a win on Saturday, they're right there with you.
Starting point is 00:25:20 So this is not, even though I did say in the last segment, if the penguins win on Saturday, it makes Sunday almost immaterial. I still stand behind that, but you do have to keep in mind that Boston is a team that's chasing you. So you've got to at least be aware
Starting point is 00:25:36 that this is a team you're battling with to get into the playoffs. Yeah, that's the type of game where you really want a regulation win as well, just like you did against New Jersey, where they were three points back, Pat. Now, they're five back because the Penguins didn't give a team like that,
Starting point is 00:25:50 a loser point by winning in overtime or winning in a shootout. So going into that Bruins game, it's also very paramount that you win that game in regulation. I also be remiss if I didn't discuss Charlie McAvoy, one of the top defensemen on the planet. He is outstanding in all three zones also brings a physical element to his game.
Starting point is 00:26:08 he is outstanding to watch i'm excited for him to be on team usa as well for the olympics i love charlie mccaboy and he's absolutely fantastic so always the offense isn't there is much for him this year one goal 22 assists for 23 points i think a lot of that is more born of the fact that boston's pretty top heavy they don't have a ton of players putting up points they postur knock has 49 geeky has 41 and then the next closest is zaka with 28 so McAvoy doesn't have a lot of players to distribute the puck to that are producing, but he is such a good, complete defenseman. He may not produce that much overall, but he can when you need him to.
Starting point is 00:26:54 And he is just a lockdown guy. Good luck trying to beat him. He is so good defensively. he has one of the crispest and nicest first passes I've seen from a defenseman in a long time. I hope I don't want the Bruins to succeed because they're a sneaky little rival for the penguins. But I do hope they get better because Charlie McAvoy is a player that I know this is going to make me a little hypocritical because I got annoyed with all the people who said this about Sidney Crosby. but McAvoy is the type of player you want to see in important games because he brings it every single time.
Starting point is 00:27:37 You're going to see him in those games next month at the Olympics. Maybe. Well, I mean, I know what happened to the Four Nations, but come on, man. I am still hype for that. He's also such a fluid skater as well. He is a treat to watch when he's on his game. So I agree with those points. We said earlier this week, got the two points now.
Starting point is 00:27:56 You get four out of six points from this week. that is a success. I said it last weekend, on the weekend back-to-back. I think a split would be nice, then they go out and win both. I'll still say the same thing here. You can get a split, four out of six points. Anything else to me is a little bit of a bonus because of the situation. Second half of a back-to-back with travel,
Starting point is 00:28:14 those are sometimes just hard games. Also, your third game in four nights. I know you've had a few days off prior to that, but still, those are tough situations. Good thing is, though, Pat, these two teams are not that good this season. So they're both very winnable for this team as the penguins try to continue their winning streak. If they win both, they'll get to eight in a row. I'll be there on Saturday. I really hope I don't hear a lot of the woo, because that was getting really bad last night. That's how you know that the penguins are wrapping up a win in that it's not that close is that
Starting point is 00:28:46 fans just start the woo bird start coming out. It's too much, man. That's a, that's a monkey's pause situation where you're like, yeah, I want to see the penguins wrap up an easy win. We don't get too stressed out. But that also means if you're in the building, you're going to hear the woo birds. So it's a tough decision because you don't want to hear the woo birds, but you also don't want to be on the edge of your seat for 60 minutes, hoping they can pull this out. That's fair. I just, let's hashtag ban the woo. It was too loud last night.
Starting point is 00:29:17 It was funny at the start. It was getting me, you know, vibes from 2011 to 2018 and all that. But when it gets that loud, late in games, let's just not. We really don't need to get that loud. It was just a lot coming through. And I can't imagine how it was for the fans that were at the game. Again, I'm going on Saturday with one of my friends. If they get out to a big lead, I'm sure it's going to happen again.
Starting point is 00:29:38 And I'm going to be like, oh, boy, here we go again. It's just, it's too much for me sometimes. But Pat, unless you have anything else to add for this episode, I think that's, going to do it for the Friday edition of a locked on penguins podcast. Thank you all so much to take the time to listen to slash watch this one. Pat and I will be back on Monday for a fresh episode for this show, breaking down Saturday's game against the flames and Sunday's game against the Bruins and getting you all set for a very busy week ahead,
Starting point is 00:30:08 some really big games next week, including against Tampa, Philadelphia, and Columbus. The games, they're going to continue to get bigger as we were now in the second half of the season, where points are at a premium, every point is very important, especially when you are in a playoff race like the Penguins are. So again, that will do it for this one. Thank you all so much for tuning in. Pat and I will be back on Monday.
