The Pittsburgh Penguins have made some lineup changes ahead of what has rapidly become a must win game three.
Hunter and I are going to break down the lineup changes and get you set for game three right after this.
You're locked on penguins, your daily podcast on the Pittsburgh Penguins, part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day.
Welcome in to the Wednesday edition of the Locked on Penguins podcast.
I am one of your hosts, Patrick Damp.
You can follow me across all social media platforms at Synonym 4Wet.
Join, as always, by the one and only Hunter Hodes.
You can follow him on Twitter at Hunter Hodes.
We thank you, as always, for making us part of your daily routine,
and we have got a big show for you today.
It is the day of Game 3 in the Penguins and Flyers first round series.
the series that the penguins currently trail two games to none after two losses at PPG Paints Arena.
And in the face of that, Hunter, the penguins have made some lineup changes.
We're going to talk about those.
We're going to talk about keys to victory.
And just because it's the Stanley Cup playoffs, it doesn't mean that we are going away from Warrior Helmet Wednesday.
We will have all of that coming up on today's show.
but as I said, let's begin with the lineup changes.
All of the changes are at Forward.
You've got your first line of Crosby between Rust and Raquel.
Thank you, Lord.
Your second line, Tommy Novak between Evgeny Malkin and Anthony Mantha.
Then your third line is Ben Kindle, centering Justin Brzoe,
who's expected to reenter the lineup and Igor Chinikov.
And the fourth line remains unchanged.
Blake Lazot between Nolichari and Connor Dewar.
And just to get the suspense out of the way,
Stu has the net again in game three.
Interesting move by Dan Mews here,
especially with the second and third lines.
Not what I would have expected,
but when you're down to nothing,
you've got to try something.
Yeah, I'm glad that Justin Brzoe is getting back in the lineup here.
I talked about that a little bit on our Tuesday episode.
you kind of had no choice, but to put Brzo in, excuse me.
It's nothing against Elmer Soderblum.
I think he's been okay in this series,
but you got to change something up with these forward lines.
And Brzo, I know he struggled a bit down the stretch,
but he was still one of your better depth scores for this team.
He's a big body, can put him hopefully around the front of the net.
Maybe that can help potentially break down this really good flyers structure
in their own zone.
so I like that.
And you're putting him back up with Ben Kindle on the third line.
Him and Kendall had some good chemistry during the regular season.
I am good with that.
The one that was interesting the most to me, Pat, was Chinakov down to the third line.
I thought they would reunite Chinokov with Novak and Malkin,
just because that line was one of the best lines of the regular season for the Penguins.
But, you know, I guess Dan Mews liked what he saw.
They didn't play a lot of minutes during the regular season.
there was that one game in Detroit, remember, if, you know,
Chinookov had his first goal of the Penguins,
it was off that great stretch pass from Ben Kendall.
So I think Muse is trying to see if he can get a little bit of that chemistry back here
for this game, also trying to maybe just get some more depth scoring from the third line
overall just because the third line has been completely neutralized in this series.
Hell Pat, honestly, all four lines have been completely neutralized in this series.
That goes to show how well the Flyers have.
play defensively. They're putting on a clinic. So Damu's trying to change this up.
You saw Mantha and Malkin have some good chemistry earlier in the season. So I think that's
why you're seeing that. And then the fourth line, no reason to change it. They were at least
understanding the assignment at least to a degree in game two before the rest of the lineup
decided to not really, you know, take charge after the fourth line. The one that I'm a little
confused about is no change to the defensive pairings at all. Watherspoon Carlson,
no reason to change that. That's your best defensive pair.
But we're still going with Gerard and Latang, even after these two games.
Don't really understand that.
And then the third pair, Ryan Shea, Connor Clifton.
Again, I'm fine with Ryan Shea.
He has had a good year.
I don't know if I'd be playing Connor Clifton tonight.
He has really struggled in this series.
He was not good on that first goal against that Porter Martone scored.
I would bring in Ilya Soloviov.
I have seen some calls to bring in Jack St. Ivany.
I'd rather play Soloviov over him.
I know you wanted St. Ivany in there.
Personally, I think Sloviav is a bit better.
I think he fits a bit better into this series as a whole.
But Damuse wants to keep sticking with those pairs.
We'll see.
It's funny, Pat.
I'm unusually calm going into this game tonight.
I've been very nervous for these last two games.
I don't know if this means anything that I'm unusually calm,
but maybe going on the road helps them.
Again, I'm looking for anything because these first two games have just been ugly.
Right.
we can talk a little more about confidence and what the stakes are and what's going to happen in our second segment,
but let's stick it with what's going on here with the lineup.
I look at these forward lines, and I think you hit the nail on the head.
I also want to look at it this way with the third line of Kindle, Briseau, and Chinikov as Briseau,
he just needs a spark. He's going to provide a spark.
You could see it in his gate.
He basically was like, yeah, it's sucked getting scratched for two.
two games in the play after everything we did this year. So you know he's going to have a fire under
him to play tonight. But I don't want this to come off as too much of a negative against Ben
Kendall, who has had a phenomenal rookie season. And we have to remember he is only 19 years old.
He has played more hockey this year than he ever has in a season. But both him and Chinikov
have not been very good through the first two games. And so,
Some of it I do relate back to in game one, the Flyers relentlessly targeted both of them,
whether physically or just in general.
And I'm still very confident in both of their futures as penguins and as NHL players.
But your first taste of NHL action and you are just under attack for an entire game,
it is going to put you in a weird headspace, especially if you're not a protege or a superstar who has,
high expectations. These are two guys who are going to be for Ben Kindle, I think his absolute ceiling
remains second line center and Igor Chinikov could be a top line winger, but they're not
franchise players. So that has got to be a little jarring. So I do think there's an element of,
you know what, we can put these guys together and maybe hide them a little bit and force the
flyers to pick and choose which one they're going to go after. That way you can open up the other
one. As for the second line, we know that Novak and Malkin have good chemistry together, but so do Malkin
and Manta. They played pretty well together to start the year. And yes, the entire Penguins forward
group has been quiet through two games. So saying this about Manta does also apply to the
rest of the forward group, but Mantha does need to get going.
And what better way to reunite him with those two and the top line.
I said this on Tuesday's episode.
For the penguins to break the way the Flyers are playing, they are essentially going to
have to play a grinding style of hockey.
In that top line of Raquel, Crosby, Rust, yeah, they're all talented.
Yeah, they can all score.
But when they want to, they can grind you.
into dust. We say it about Crosby all the time because Colby Armstrong copyrighted the description
of Sidney Crosby. He's the greatest fourth line grinder to ever play the game, and the penguins are
desperately going to need that. Now, here is where we got to thumb our noses a little bit at Dan Muse.
No changes to the top power play. It remains Carlson, Crosby, Malkin, Rust, and Raquel.
here is the asterisk I'm going to put on it.
And we'll see what happens tonight against the Flyers.
If they get an opportunity or two and it is the same lifeless unit,
he has to put these in a blender and try something new.
It has to be the shortest of short leashes for this power play unit.
Yeah, I mean, I'd like to see different combinations on that top unit.
I've been beating the drum for the last couple episodes.
I would like to see Igor Chinov up there considering.
the release that he has, the shoot first mentality that he also has, which that unit really needs
right now. He's also good at entering the zone with control, also something this unit needs right now,
Pat, because as soon as they enter the zone, the flyers are just waiting for them.
And they're just taking the puck and saying, like, oh, thank you very much. This is like free candy.
We're just going to send it right down the other way. And then the same thing happens. They send it back down.
They can barely even get sustained zone time against his PK. So if they get it, you know, that first powerplate
tonight, it's the same thing as the first couple of games.
You got to really put this in a blender.
You know, maybe that involves putting Malkin on his own unit.
Maybe that involves, again, Rust coming off for Chinakov, maybe someone else coming up on
the top unit.
But, you know, I was surprised that they didn't make any changes during the morning
skate.
But again, this, they keep messing up here.
They're going to have to make changes pretty quickly because that unit has really
cost the Penguins so far in two games.
And I will say this too.
Listen, look at the names that I just ran down on that top power play unit on, let's say, 30 of 32 teams, with the exception of a couple, that is probably the best unit you can put out there on most teams with the talent involved.
Most teams, yeah.
I wouldn't say 30, but it's more than half.
It's up there.
It's very much up there.
Yeah.
I think off the top of my head not to get too deep into this, Tampa, Edmonton, their probably, Dowell.
maybe. Colorado. Those teams, yeah, they probably got a better top power play unit just on paper. But
for most teams, that is one hell of a top power play unit. The difference now is it has been
such a net negative on this series that I understand sticking with it to start. But if you get
the same results, you have to change it just because we have said it a million times over the past
week. This is no longer the feel good, happy to be here. Look how much we're surprising every one moment.
This is the Stanley Cup playoffs and you are two losses away from exiting early, especially in a
series that before it started, just about everybody had you picked a win. So you've got to make
your changes one way or the other. Speaking of changes, that is going to do it for our opening
segment. When we come back, we got to talk about some changes the penguins have to make if they
want to get themselves a victory in game three. Before we do that, though, we have got a couple of
sponsors. We got to get to starting with our friends at Hymns. ED is way more common than most

We're back here on the Wednesday edition of Locked on Penguins.
I'm Patrick Damp right alongside Hunter Hodes and some big changes.
Got to be made tonight.
We already started with the lineup changes.
They're not significant or massive, but you get Justin Briseau back.
You've switched up your middle six.
You've switched up your top six.
The defense remains the same.
But not to beat a dead horse here, Hunter, but the penguins are going to have to,
and our hardcore listeners know this.
It comes from me a lot.
The best antidote to when you're playing this way is to simplify, simplify, simplify.
You don't need to skate through this team's trap.
You don't need to make tick-tac-toe plays.
You gain the red line.
You put it deep.
And you go to work.
I'm going to say, honestly, Pat, I have one big key for tonight.
It's going to be a cliche.
It's going to be simple.
That's fine.
Get a lead.
I think that could be huge for this team in this series.
They have yet to play with the lead.
And when you're playing against a team that they're very defensively sound,
they're clogging everything up,
if you can get a lead,
it can force them to potentially open up a little bit.
You especially get a second one to maybe get a two nothing lead
that could potentially open them up even more,
leading them a bit vulnerable in their own zone
where you can maybe punish them in transition a little bit,
because, you know, the transition play, you know, chances off the rush.
They really haven't been there that much for the Penguins in this series.
But if you can get an early lead or any type of lead in this game and the Penguins,
they have played ahead a lot this season.
They took the lead and a lot of their games.
So these first two games, it's been kind of unfamiliar territory for them,
playing from behind so much, considering how often they played with the lead so much this year.
That they were top five among all teams of the league in terms of playing with a lead this year.
Like, that's how good they were.
So if they can get a lead here, it could force the flyers to open up a little bit and potentially play a game that suits the penguins a little bit more.
So enough of these slow starts, you cannot let the flyers get the lead early in this game.
Or as you saw in game one, but especially game two, they're going to put you into a chokehold, smother the game out even more, and they're just going to keep frustrating you.
So a hot start tonight, very crucial for me.
That's honestly my biggest key for the penguins in this game.
We talked about ways to potentially get around this defensive structure, hit the red
line, dump it, try to go to work down low, work it low to high.
But again, I really just think they need to play with a lead in this one.
That's because they just haven't done it yet.
That's a, I'll just say it.
It's a painfully obvious point, but it's really true is that they haven't made the flyers
chase a game yet.
They have not made the flyers have to adapt to what the penguins want to do.
It has been the penguins adapting to the flyers and the penguins having to try to break the flyers system,
which that is the ground that they want this to be played on.
So it does go kind of hand in glove with what we have been saying about needing to put the puck deep,
needing to go to work, because you're going to have to do that to get that early lead.
and with the way the thing that I am curious to see,
because we have gotten a lot of comments and social media posts
sent our way from both penguins and Flyers fans alike of us saying,
hey, you're really underestimating this Flyers team.
And here's the thing I will say to that is I've brought it up in writing.
I've brought it up on this show.
Talkit deserves a ton of credit for the way this team is playing because,
while I don't think on paper the Flyers roster stacks up to the Penguins roster,
it is still a young, fast, talented team and getting them to play this type of
defensive, boring hockey is a testament to talk it.
What I'm curious to see is, what happens should the Penguins take a lead and make this
Flyers team have to chase them?
How good are they?
Can they keep up?
And if the penguins get beat in that way too, I'm still going to.
going to be annoyed. I'm still going to be upset. But if we find out that the penguins got to the game
they want to play and it's not good enough, that is a more complete answer than what we've gotten
through two games. So I look at that and I say, yeah, they got to find a way to take a lead and make
the flyers chase the game. Here's another painfully obvious one that I think that the penguins need
to approach this game with tonight, especially in the offensive zone. And I know after game two,
this is going to sound silly because they missed the net a lot in game through.
They are going to have to shoot from everywhere because here's how I see this.
Every shot on goal, every shot attempt is a mini chaos agent.
It is forcing the flyers to react to shots.
If you feel like in the defensive zone that as soon as the puck touches the stick of a penguin
that they're going to put it on net, you might have to go out of your way to you might have to change
your defensive system and your defensive posture because you have to prepare for the
eventuality that they may be shooting the puck.
The penguins, or I should say the flyers have done a good job of closing down shooting
lanes, getting sticks in the way.
But a simple way to break that is you've got to make them respect the fact that you're
probably going to shoot the puck and you really got to test more so than you did in the
second half of game two, Dan Vladar.
Yeah, Vladar has had a very good.
series. And there were a couple of takes on our, a couple of people in our comments section on Tuesday.
They were like, well, what do you mean they haven't tested him that much? He had the shutout. Yeah,
he had the shutout. And he played very well, especially in the third period. But in terms of high
danger, the penguins have not tested him nearly as much as I have wanted them to. So that's another key
tonight. Get to those high danger areas, 10 to 15 feet out. Try to break down that structure and test him
from there. He still makes the saves, which, hey, he's having.
at a really good year. He's had a good series.
You know, you tip your cabin and it's like, okay, well, not my night once again.
But you got to get to those high danger areas in this one.
So other than that, I don't really have too many other big keys.
Powerplay obviously has to be better.
Skinner's been good.
And I want him to continue to do that as well.
Also, and this sounds like a cliche as well, we don't need to see any more avoidable mistakes.
Excuse me.
Both goals, the flyer has scored with a goalie.
in the net in game two. Very pat, and I mean very avoidable mistakes that they need to learn from.
I want to see that tonight. Finally, go out there and execute. This is basically a must win.
You go down 03. It's almost impossible to come back from that. There's a reason why this has only
been done a select handful of times in terms of a reverse sweep when you're down 3-0.
It is painfully hard. You win this one. You're right back in the series.
Let's see what they're made of here.
Last one for me before we had to break.
And yes, I know it's a downtime right now, but that doesn't mean we're skipping more your helmet Wednesday.
So make sure you're hanging with us for that.
The last one for me is discipline.
You haven't really been bitten by it yet, but they have been getting sucked into a lot of the extracurriculars.
Because the Flyers, they know.
They have figured it out through two games that you poke and prod at this Penguins team,
they're going to engage.
Whatever they're calling it today,
Xfinity Mobile Arena, Wells Fargo Center,
Wachovia Center, Citizens Bank.
It's always the Wells Fargo Center to me.
They can change it however many times they want,
it will always be the Wells Fargo Center to me.
You know that crowd is going to be hyped the hell up as well they should be.
That is a very difficult place for people to play.
you've got to try to tune it out.
Let them punch themselves out the first five to ten minutes,
literally and figuratively,
because they're going to be amped.
They are going to be going a million miles an hour.
Survive that storm.
Stay disciplined.
Dig in and play this one as best you can
to try to get yourself off the mat and back into this series.
Before we had to break,
we got to remind you of our everydayers club.
If you never miss an episode,
it is time to make it official.

When we come back, yes indeed, it's Wednesday.
That means we're handing out our MVP of the week in another Warrior Helmet Wednesday.
into that right after this. But we've got one more sponsor to get to, and that is five-hour energy.
If you've got a sweet tooth like I do, you know how tough it is to find that perfect treat
without all of the sugar. That is why cotton candy five-hour energy shots bring me that nostalgic
flavor back in a whole new way. It's the classic cotton candy taste you remember, but with a tasty
caffeine boost and zero sugar. It's a quick, easy way to satisfy that sweet craving while keeping
things simple and on the go. I do love cotton candy. I'm not even going to run from that big cotton
candy fan, especially the flavor, always have been. But with my height and trying to get back
into shape, I can't be mainline in sugar all day. I'll end up looking like a bowling ball. So that is why
five-hour energy shots have been great for me, especially before I played beer league hockey,
go to the gym, go for a run. I'm getting all the energy. I'm not getting any of the sugar. I
cannot recommend it enough, especially the taste. Full, full transparency. I got a whole box of
them sitting downstairs. They go with me to the gym. Absolutely fantastic. So bring on the
sweetness with cotton candy five hour energy shots available now at five hour energy.com or on
Amazon. Rapping up the Wednesday edition of Locked on Penguins, I am Patrick Damp right alongside
Hunter Hodes. And yes, yes indeed, I know things aren't very very.
bright right now. We don't want to have, or we don't have, I should say, a lot of positivity
in the Penguins community when you're down to O to the Philadelphia Flyers. But as we do,
every single Wednesday, we hand out our MVP of the week in Warrior Helmet Wednesday. We do
have a lot of new listeners on board, thanks to the playoff run. So if you're new, this is our MVP
of the week, as I said, and it pays homage to the 2016 Stanley Cup winning Pittsburgh
Penguins where during that season and throughout their playoff run, when they would get a win
in the locker room, they would hand out their player of the game as part of their tradition.
And it was a warrior helmet.
So that's what we do here.
And I think if you have been watching Penguins hockey for the last week, there is a pretty
obvious Warrior Helmet Wednesday winner for this week, Hunter.
Why don't you tell the people who were picking for Warrior Helmet Wednesday?
Yeah, mainly because a lot of these forwards have yet to show up in this series.
Again, that is a credit to how well the Flyers are playing defensively.
They are not allowing any of the Penguins top forwards to really get in on this series.
A lot of the defensemen, it's the same thing.
Stu Skinner gets the helmet for this last week.
He has been awesome in goal.
He has given them a chance to win both of these games.
You remember after the penalty shot missed from Owen Tippett,
Skinner literally motioned to the bench saying, come on, like, get me some help here.
They weren't able to get him that help, but he very much deserves to start game three
tonight.
You know, I said on Twitter, I'll say it here.
This is some of the best goaltending they have gotten to, at least start a playoff
series in several years.
And if that continues tonight, and if their offense is able to finally show up, they'll have
a chance at winning this game and getting right back into this series.
So I felt this one was a no-brainer.
Skinner's been great in this series.
He's been the best player, but he's going to have to continue, I think, at least in my opinion, playing at this level.
It's kind of a cop out to call him the quote unquote X factor of game three because he really has been the only positive.
With all my X factors for the series.
Yeah.
That is kind of what I have said to the point where I said he needs to not lose the series rather than try to win it.
he can't give games away.
And through the two games that the penguins have lost,
he has been the only one I really can't blame.
He has stopped multiple breakaways.
I'm going to credit him with stopping a penalty shot,
even though Owen Tippett missed the net.
But he has been the only consistent force for the penguins
over these two games in the series.
And it's a positive development.
I know that we're down in the dumps because they're down to O,
but if the penguins,
can pull themselves out. If the penguins can make this a series and even potentially win it,
a huge positive moving forward is the fact that Stuart Skinner looks reliable. Yeah, you look at the
numbers, they're not all that great. Oh, and two, 2.56 GA 884 save percentage, but when he is needed
to make the big saves, he has made them. And pretty much all of the goals that have been
surrendered in this series by the penguins, you can't put on him.
They were defensive breakdowns.
Porter Martone's first goal, an absolute snipe.
But it came after a game where he was making a bunch of good saves to keep the minute.
And you knew that the dam was going to break eventually just because of the pressure that he was under the whole game.
So he has been fantastic.
Maybe I shouldn't say fantastic.
He has been pretty good.
Ideally would have liked him to steal a game, but we're also realistic.
and that we know Stuart Skinner isn't going to steal a game.
So let's bring up our tracker because we're still keeping track of it,
even into the playoffs.
If you're watching us on YouTube, you can see it there on your screen.
Still leading the pack is Captain Sidney Crosby with five.
Eric Carlson, Evgeny Malkin, and Anthony Manta with four,
Justin Brzoe, Kyle Dubus and Dan Mews with three apiece,
Avery Hayes, Ben Kindle, Sergey Murashov, Ricard Raquel, Archer Sheelovs,
And now Stuart Skinner with two, Noelle O'Hari, Igor Chinikov, Connor Dewar,
the special teams units, and Elmer Soderblum all have won a piece.
We are keeping track of this because at the end of the season,
whether it be at the end of this series, at the end of another series,
whenever that may be, we will hand out a season-long warrior helmet
as well as our end-of-season awards here on Locked-on Penguins.
But it is the Penguins.
It is the Flyers.
It's game three of the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs coming your way tonight from Philadelphia at 7 o'clock.
If you are in Pittsburgh, it will be on Sportsnet Pittsburgh, everywhere else.
TNT, True TV, and HBO Max.
That is going to do it for our Wednesday edition of Locked on Penguins.
Hunter and I will be back on Thursday to recap this game,
as well as get you set for the weekend when we will have games.
name four and anything else that happens between now and then.
So for Hunter Hodes, I am Patrick Damp.
Thank you as always for tuning in.
And we will talk to you again on Thursday.
