So Pat, the Pittsburgh Penguins made some long-awaited coaching changes.
Right? Right? No, they didn't do it for the Bain Club, but they did make some changes to their
HL affiliate, the Wilkesbury's Grant Penguins, Jason Spetsa, announcing on Sunday that head coach
J.D. Forrest and assistant coach Kevin Porter will not be back with the team next season. They're not
renewing their contracts. And Spetsa, he will oversee the coaching search for Wilkesbury. This comes
after Wilkesbury got swept in their three game series against Lehigh Valley. And let's face it,
This is a very disappointing result for Wilkesbury.
They were expected to win this series and move on to the second round.
They called up a lot of reinforcements for the HL playoffs, and they lasted all of two games.
I will say, I did feel really bad for Wilkesbury in game, too, because they were playing
really well in that game.
They were up three to one, and they took that lead into the third period.
They give up a goal in the third to make it three, two.
And then after that, honestly, I hate saying this.
Wilkesbury got hosed a couple of times.
in the third period. The goal that made it 3-3, that was a blatant high stick. Somehow the officials
missed the call. Then Redeem Zohorna gives the Penguins a 4-3 lead with less than four minutes to go.
You're thinking, okay, they're going to skate out of there with the wind. They're going to send
this series back to Wilkesbury. But note, they did something that their parent team did a lot of
this past season, and they blew a lead late in the third period. But it wasn't for a lack of trying
to blow the lead, the officials missed another really bad penalty in the corner.
Sam Poulan was blatantly interfered with, and then I believe was Mark Johnstone that was
taken down.
They missed two penalties there in the corner that leads to the tying goal late in the third,
and then Lehigh Valley wins the game in overtime.
They got hosed very badly by officiating in this game, but still, no surprise that Wilkesbury
is going to have a new head coach for next season.
because that's just unacceptable to lose those two games to Lehigh Valley,
a team that I think Wilkesbury is better than.
For sure.
I mean, we talked about it on the show about how it looked a lot like the Rangers
Capitals matchup in the NHL where you had a team in Lehigh who had a negative goal
differential, really limped in.
And then you had Wilkes Bear who, well, they weren't the top team in the
They still had a very strong season and looked like a team that could go on a run in the Calder
Cup playoffs.
But alas, here they are outside of the playoffs after a two-game sweep.
And then I look at this from less of a results-oriented standpoint and more of an organizational
standpoint.
Forest as well as Porter where Rutherford hires, Pittsburgh is one of the teams in the
NHL that owns their AHL affiliate.
so this is part of the Penguins organization.
It's not an independent team that they contract to be their AHL affiliate.
They are fully under the umbrella of the penguins.
So then you think about the timeline as well of Dubus being hired,
Spetsa being named AGM or whatever his official title is.
I do believe it's AGM.
But regardless, they didn't have a whole lot of time to make structural changes this last summer
to the minor league system.
So they just kept it in place.
And now I think they're going to have more time this summer to really put their stamp on Wilkes Bear because you look at the way the NHL season for the Penguins ended last year.
You have the upheaval upheaval in the front office.
Kyle Dubus is a surprise hire because it looked like he was more than ready and willing to remain in Toronto.
So he comes in at the last minute.
there's only a few weeks prior to the NHL draft,
and then you've got free agency.
Now he's had an entire season to really put his stamp on the big club.
Now he's going to put his stamp on the AHL club.
So you see that that's going to be more of a process of this summer.
And we'll get into everything this has to do with the big club,
the coaching staff and things like that.
But overall, I mean, between both the results of the Calder Cup playoffs
in the two-game sweep and the organizational timeline.
I can't say I'm overly shocked by this move.
Agreed.
I think it was just time for a fresh start for all parties involved,
and this allows Dubison's Fets to really bring in their own head coach
to really develop a lot of these prospects in the Penguin system
because that's what's most important to me when it comes to this.
Obviously, the HL season is pretty important,
and you want to see how this team does throughout the regular season,
and you want to see if they can go on a deep run and playoff.
else, but I really care about how this coach develops the next wave of talent in this organization.
And obviously, I'm not going to kick JD for us when it's down.
I'm sure he was doing a very fine job in Wilkesbury, but it's obvious that they want their own
coach in place that can do a bit of a better job.
So I'm curious to see what type of coach they go after here, Pat.
Are they going after someone with maybe NHL head coaching experience to coach their
a HL team or are they going to go after someone who really hasn't had too much experience
coaching at the NHL or AHL level, but is a really good communicator.
It's going to be a really interesting search, to say the least.
It will.
And assuming that Fenway Sports Group is similar to MLSE in Toronto, you figure this is going
to be an HL team that's run like an NHL club because Kyle Dubis and just the Toronto
Maple Leafs in general since
MLSC really took over his
ownership in Toronto, they have
placed a serious emphasis on
their HL team not just being a spot
for development, but a spot for
meaningful hockey. Putting aside
what Toronto and the Maple Leafs
have gone through on the NHL
level, the Toronto
Marleys are very well run.
They're very well coached and
it's not just a feeder system
for the Maple Leafs. It's a
destination that players go to
win to play meaningful hockey. And I've long said that that is a huge, huge opportunity for your
NHL club when your AHL club plays actual competitive hockey rather than just guys show up there.
They stick around for a couple months and think, okay, if I play well, regardless of what
the team does, I'll get my call up to the big club and I don't got to worry about this place anymore.
No, you want to have that team go on deep runs. You want
them to play meaningful hockey.
And Wilkes-Bare, all things considered, despite having a lot of graduates up to the
NHL to the Pittsburgh Penguins, they have not really played much meaningful hockey over
the last decade.
So that, I think, is about to change in a big way for the Penguins organization.
The goal for them is to kind of be like Hershey for the Capitals.
You know how I feel about the Capitals team.
I don't really think they're that good.
But look at the amount of players that have come up.
from Hershey to the initial level that have played in very meaningful games down there.
You know, Hendricks LaPierre, Connor McMichael, Miros Chenenko.
I can keep going if you want me to.
They all played in those meaningful games just because Hershey has made deep playoff
runs over the last couple of years, but that's been really missing with Wilkesbury.
So I think it's more in that regard, Pat, to be honest.
And again, even though it's there have been all the memes, all the jokes and everything
about Toronto and their curse and inability to win in the postseason,
you look at a lot of the guys on their roster outside of Austin Matthews,
Marner, Nealander, on and on.
They cut their teeth at the AHL level with the Toronto Marley's.
They went on a Calder Cup run and won the Calder Cup under Kyle Dubus's tutelage.
And I understand the Calder Cup for us as NHL fans doesn't mean a whole heck of a lot.
But you want those guys to get that meaningful hockey experience at,
the professional level. Sure, these guys win in college and the junior level or overseas wherever
they're from, but it's not the HL, it's not the NHL. So you want them to have serious,
meaningful hockey at the HL level and you want them to come up and understand it's the same
standard here, just a lot higher. Agree, and I think that's where we're going to park the
conversation coming up in the second segment, Pat and I going to get into what this means for
Mike Sullivan and the rest of his coaching staff with the big club.

All right, we're back here on this episode of the Locktown Penguins podcast.
I am one of your host, Honour Hodeys, join on my host, Patrick Dam.
So in terms of what these moves might mean for Mike Sullivan,
obviously he is going to be back as Penguins head coach next season.
I think if he was not going to be back, they would have fired him by now, obviously.
But if Wilkesbury is able to hire an experienced veteran coach who has coached in the NHL before,
I think they could be setting this up with an angle like,
okay, Mike, if you don't have a good start to next season,
your replacement is now in-house,
and this coach will replace you if this team gets off to a really poor start.
Say, Pat, they start, I don't know, just throwing this out there.
Three, nine and one, four, ten, and one, something like that,
and Mike Sullivan gets canned.
The coach in waiting would be, in Wilkesbury,
that would be the next interim or potentially full-time head coach.
I really could see Kyle Dubus and Jason Spetsa going down that road for this next hire.
Yeah.
I mean, again, we can let history be our guide because you look at the Toronto Maple Leafs.
And you know that Mike Babcock was not Kyle Dubus's guy.
He was brought in under Lou Lamarillo.
Sorry, I blanked on that name real quick.
How could I forget the one and only Lou Lamarillo?
And he had Sheldon Keith coaching.
the Toronto Marley's.
And that is something I think we could see here.
I don't know who they would get.
I really hope it isn't Sheldon Keefe.
I'm not a huge fan of Sheldon Keefe in his coaching style.
But you figure they would go out and get somebody like that to where,
hey, listen, Mike Sullivan and Kyle Dubas may have a very cordial, very productive
relationship, but Mike Sullivan isn't Kyle Dubus's guy.
So he can maybe go get his guy and say, listen, we're going to put you in Wilkes-Bair.
If things go well this year, you're probably just going to be our development guy.
You're going to get guys ready for the NHL.
But keep your phone on because if things go poorly at the NHL level,
you may be getting a call to come up and coach the Pittsburgh Penguins.
So we'll see.
And I also look at this as Dubas was very non-committal to everybody but Mike Sullivan.
He didn't put really a show of faith into the rest of the coaching staff.
He put a show of faith into Mike Sullivan, but didn't.
really say much about everybody else. So I do think this is going to be a summer of a lot of
staff moves where, yeah, Mike Sullivan's still going to be at the head of the table as the head
coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins, but everybody else around him is likely to change.
Are you concerned that they haven't made any of those other moves yet to the NHL coaching staff?
Just because, I mean, I saw a bunch of the takes on social media on Sunday. Well, why aren't they
doing anything for the big club and all this stuff? And while I get that those people are a bit
frustrated. Sometimes these things do take a little bit of time and heck pat, maybe they're waiting
for a certain coach to be made available if a team gets eliminated. Well, and you beat me to that.
At one point this summer, or this summer, it's not even summer yet, this end of the season,
there were 16 available jobs because 16 teams fired their coaches. One of them has since been
filled with Lindy Rough going back to Buffalo. But there is.
going to be more fallout because you look at the way this first round is unfolding.
I've said it on the show before.
There are a lot of teams who had lofty expectations going into this Stanley Cup playoff,
and they're inevitably not going to meet them because only one team wins the Stanley Cup.
Now there's going to be a couple teams that make it to the second and third round,
and they're going to go, hey, listen, that's the best time where the best teams usually make it.
So we're just going to make some changes on the margins.
But Toronto's probably going to lose their series.
there's going to be a couple other teams.
And I don't think it's the Islanders because Patrick Boas just got in there.
But you look at a couple of the other teams facing elimination,
and they're probably going to make coaching changes.
And with that many open jobs and so many other guys out there,
they have a lot of a pool to go from.
And that doesn't even get into guys who may want to make the leap from junior,
guys who may want to make the leap from the NCAA or whoever else.
So I said this on Sunday when the announcement came out.
One move doesn't preclude other moves.
Just because they did this doesn't mean they're not going to do other things.
It is, we really forget how long the NHL off season is.
It's April 29th as we record this in the first round, still not done.
So we're going to have a long off season.
July 1st, yeah, it's going to get here before we know it,
but there is a lot of things to do between now and then.
Agreed.
And I think you can be disappointed maybe that some moves haven't been made yet
when it comes to this coaching staff.
But again, I will fully judge how this staff and honestly how this team looks
when opening night comes in October.
I'm not going to get my pennies in a lot on April 29th,
a couple weeks after the season ended.
Like, yes, is it a little annoying that they haven't made a couple of changes to the coaching staff?
with Tar Reardon, Michael Lucci, or maybe even to a degree, Mike Sullivan.
Sure, I understand that.
But I also know that there are over five months left in the offseason.
So everyone that's a little upsound on social media, take a little bit of a chill-pull.
I'm not trying to be like the fan police, please.
I don't want to be known as someone that does that.
But hey, just take a little bit of a chill pill.
It's going to be 85 degrees here in Pittsburgh today.
I want to see what this team does throughout the entire off-season,
and especially Pat, once the full season comes to an end.
Well, and here's the thing, too.
You know, I said that there's 15 head coaching jobs open.
And the pool is still pretty large of guys who are available and coaches that are available.
There's also guys who might do go on a really successful Calder Cup run this summer that might look to move up.
And there's going to be guys who miss out.
They're going to be guys who have their sights set on,
becoming an NHL head coach that don't get an NHL head coaching job.
Well, with the way the things have gone in Pittsburgh the last few years,
it should be a somewhat attractive destination because this team is underachieved.
There's no two ways about it.
There's certainly reasons for it that are beyond the control of coaching,
but at the end of the day, the team has underachieved.
So if you're a guy who misses out on an NHL head coaching job,
you can look at Pittsburgh and go, I'm willing to bet that that seat's getting pretty hot.
So if I join Mike Sullivan's staff, maybe I become Mike Sullivan in just a matter of a few weeks or a month.
Yeah, I agree with you.
But I did want to say there's not 15 head coaching vacancies, at least right now.
I think what you meant to say is throughout the last year, half the teams in the league have replaced their head coach.
But right now there's about, I believe it's around five to six NHL head coaching vacancies right now.
And that could grow by the time this season.
Yeah, that's the downside of speed reading is I just read the amount of firings and took it as the amount of job openings because I'm a dummy and like I did in college, I crammed instead of actually studied.
Pat's having a case in the Monday's here, that's what he's trying to say here.
But I think that will do it for this second segment.
Coming up to end the show, at least one of the Penguins farm teams has moved on in the playoffs.
The Wheeling Nailers got a big win in game five to advance the second round.
Pat and I can discuss that.
Plus give some of our thoughts on the Stanley Cup playoffs.
as well to end the show.
But before we get to that,
we got to tell you all about our next sponsor,
and that is Monopoly Go.
So, Pat, I've been told I'm a fairly competitive person.
What do you think?
Do you really want me to roast you for Fortnite again?
Because I know you're a competitive guy when you pick up them sticks.
All the time.
I always play on my controller.
I haven't learned keyboard just yet,
but it's a long-term goal of mind to play on keyboard and mouse.
But speaking of Monopoly Go, at least,
and Monopoly Go, you can team up with friends for time tournaments
where you work together to build up each other's boards.
The more you win together, the more awesome prizes you unlock.
And there's so much to get.
You can get unique stickers.
You can trade with friends to complete albums for big prizes.
Cool new playing pieces for travel the boards with.
You can also get hilarious emojis for taunting friends
when you smash their buildings or heist their vaults.
Plus, Monopoly Go feels new and exciting every day.
with constantly changing tournaments and challenges,
a ton including their own unique mini games,
like digging for treasure or a robot Pinchino machine.
And there's always new timed events that help you win big,
like massive multipliers for everything you win or rent frenzies.
There's always something fun to discover and Monopoly Go.
So get off the bench and go download it now,
free on Google Play or the app store, game on.
All right, we're back here on this episode of the Loggedon Penguins podcast.
I am one of your host, Hunter Hodes.
join on my coast Patrick Gamp.
So Pat, at least one team for the farm system for the Penguins
was able to advance in their playoffs.
Congratulations to the Wheeling Nailers,
beating the Indy Fuel in five games.
They had raised a 1-0 deficit with three straight goals.
And Justin Dammell and Matt Kutman scored two goals each in Wheeling's 42 win over the weekend
for everyone that was up at Cranberry watching that game.
Well, you were in for a treat as Willing got that massive win.
they'll now take on Toledo in the second round.
The first two games in Toledo, next three will be in Wheeling,
and then the final two, if necessary, will be in Toledo.
But that's still a big series win for Wheeling as they try and go on a really deep run here in the ECHL playoffs.
Yeah, it's huge for them because, you know, again, the theme continues.
You want to see your farm clubs playing meaningful hockey at this time of year.
You don't want it just to be looked at as a stop on the road.
Of course, it is that.
You want your guys to have that burning.
desire to get to the NHL and play at that level, but you want it to come in an environment where
you're actually playing hockey that matters. And another big comeback for them. They go down early.
They erase the deficit and never let it go. And again, it's a weird game for them because they
didn't play it at West Banko Arena. Like you said, they played it at the Lemu Complex. For all intents
and purposes, it's a neutral site. Yeah, sure. It's easier for those in Wheeling to get up to Cranberry
than it is people from Indianapolis to get there. But at the same time, you still had to
travel there. You had to make adjustments because you're in a building you're not used to.
And now they go on to play a pretty big rival in Toledo. If you've been at all paying attention
to the Wheeling Nailers for the past 10 or so years, a lot of roads lead back and forth from
Wheeling to Toledo. And these two franchises do not like one another. So this will be a very
fun matchup for them in the second round. And a huge, huge hat tip to a guy who is a
their head coach and was a huge part of that team's run to the 2016 Kelly Cup final, and that's
Derek Army. He was an absolute fan favorite when he was there, and rightfully so. The guy
could score goals almost at will. Heart and soul guy, fell in love with Wheeling, made it a part
of his life, and now he's coaching the team that meant so much to him. So I'm very excited for
them, and I'm even more excited to follow them through this journey, and might have to make
my way back down to my old stomping grounds of Wheeling, West Virginia and catch a game or two.
Yeah, you can go down potentially in a couple weeks. The series is expected to start this Friday and
Saturday in Toledo. And then May 8th, May 10th and May 11th will be the games in Wheeling,
the 11th, obviously. That is game five. That's if necessary. And you can get tickets visiting
Wheelingnailings.com or call 304 to a three-four goal. So congratulations to Wheeling. Really nice
first-run series win. They'll now go up against
the Toledo team that is one of the better teams in the ECHL this year.
But moving along to the Stanley Cup playoffs, did you have any thoughts on this series so far?
I mean, I hate to say this, but I knew this was coming with the Capitals and the Rangers.
There's a reason why the Capitals had a minus 37 goal differential heading into this series.
And I'm going to try to sound like someone who doesn't have copium.
Yes, the Penguins definitely blew it a lot of times this season.
but I still don't think it's that hot of a take to say that the Penguins would have given the Rangers at least a better fight than what the Capitals just did.
The Capitol scored seven goals in four games and didn't really come close to winning any of those four games.
Again, I don't think the Penguins would have won that series.
I think this would have lost potentially in five or six games.
I just don't think it's that hot of the take to say that the Penguins would have given them at least a little bit of a better fight.
I know.
Probably have a little bit of copium there.
but that series went how I expected to.
Yeah, I mean,
end of the day,
the true truth of the matter is that you have 82 games to prove that you belong in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
And the way did not do that.
They,
you know,
an average power play here or a couple better goaltending performances there
or a couple held leads there,
then they're right there in it.
And they probably do give the Rangers a better fight.
And again,
I'm right there with you.
I don't think they would have won the series, but five, six games, maybe seven,
take a little bit of a chunk out of the Rangers and give them a little bit of less rest time
on their quest for a Stanley Cup.
Sure, but end of the day, I mean, you know, I'm not going to sit here and pretend like,
no, the Penguins did not belong.
They should not have had a, they would have given the Rangers a better fight,
but that's an entire counterfactual that we're never going to be able to prove.
Right.
They also blew it for 68 games and blew so many leads.
So, yes, in a way, they got what they deserved.
I mean, they definitely did.
But I still, again, would have liked to see what they would have done
against the Rangers overall, just because I think they would have given them
at least a little bit of a more fight.
Outside of this, I'm sorry, I hope this isn't a hot take,
but this first round has kind of stunk.
Yeah.
A lot of these series are bad.
I thought Tampa Bay was going to put up a lot more of a fight against Florida so far.
I thought Toronto was going to play at least a little bit better against Boston.
And who boy, if they lose this game five in Boston,
Austin, the takes coming from Toronto will melt everyone's brains, but I also want them to
inject it into my veins because it's going to be awesome. You then have the Islanders series against
hurricanes. Of course, it takes double overtime for them to get their first win in that series.
I do feel really bad for the Predators up three to one with less than three minutes to go.
You give up one six on five goal. Colton Sizzins, literally an inch away from any of that game in regulation.
best forgets the hatcherick Vancouver
and then wins in an overtime.
They go up three games to one.
I was gutted for Predators fans there.
And then the Kings last night,
they threw everything,
including the Kitchen Sink at Stuart Skinner and the Oilers.
They're not able to win.
Oilers are not three games to one.
I very much need a Canucks Oilers second round series.
And then the other series,
with Colorado and Winnipeg, man,
I definitely think Winnipeg is a great team,
but there's nothing they can do
when McCar and McKinnon go gone mode like this.
Even though Georgiev has not even been good in this series,
when McCar and McKinon play like this,
it lights out.
Doesn't matter.
They've made Connor Hellebuck,
arguably the best goaltender in the league right now,
look very mortal in that series.
Yeah, I mean, just some,
I'm with you on the first round kind of being the,
it hasn't been great.
you expect more. I really echo what you say about Tampa Bay and Florida. I expected Florida to win,
even though I did predict that Tampa would win. I did say I would have no surprises if Florida
came out on top. I expected way more of a fight out of them. As for Toronto, I said this to our
pal Josh Yohe. It's not even that I'm so much surprised that Boston is up. I just expected so much
more out of the Toronto Maple Leafs. You know, the curse is there. You know, the, the Maple Leafs are now the
capitals in the whole until they do it they haven't done it kind of team but i didn't expect them
to look this poorly i i know that boston has their number i know boston beat them up
throughout the regular season but i didn't expect it to be this bad and then echoing what you said
about winnipeg colorado i mean winnipeg's a great team genuinely great team and the problem is
they ran into a greater team in Colorado.
Once those stars on Colorado start humming,
you just can't stop them.
So yeah, it's been a tough first round.
I mean, you expect more fireworks out of the first round
and we just really haven't gotten any.
Agreed.
And I will say Dallas, Vegas so far very much is living out to the hype Dallas
with a big time response in game three.
They're now down two games to one heading into game four in Vegas.
But last but not least,
Pat, do you want to tell the listeners and watchers about SportsNet Pittsburgh's new deal for everyone?
Yeah, we got a big, big new deal here from SportsNet Pittsburgh.
If you're like me, don't have cable, don't have the streaming services that have SportsNet Pittsburgh.
That is going to change.
I believe starting today, I'd have to check again.
But they are going to offer a direct-to-consumer streaming option beginning.
Again, I believe today, I'm going to have to confirm that later.
but it will be 1799 per month.
You'll get their entire library,
including pirates and penguins games.
So you don't have to go on some Google searches
that are making worry that your computer might blow up anymore
if you're willing to pay that cost.
So huge news.
And again, I keep saying this,
both at my everyday job and just in general.
This is a oncoming sleeping giant
that I think a lot of sports leagues
and a lot of teams are going to have to find a way to reckon with
because with so many people cutting the cord and walking away from traditional cable,
if these leagues and teams don't start to find a solution away from regional sports networks,
you're eventually going to have direct-to-consumer options,
whether it's from the networks themselves or the teams themselves.
Because we've seen a lot of teams offer this now,
where you can pay a flat fee and you get all of that team's games for that season.
So this is a big moment.
But for us right now as Penguins fans,
we finally have our option to see the regional broadcast.
Right.
I think this is the future of sports television in a way,
especially for local teams overall.
I think you're going to see a lot more teams in the NBA,
MLB, and NHL do this over the next few years.
But that's big news for me.
I have Fubo and my girlfriend uses it downstairs.
Her dad also uses that account.
So I don't think I'm going to be canceling that anytime you.
I'm just going to keep that.
But if you or someone you know has Fubo that really doesn't need it
or some other service, well, you can tell them to cancel this and just get Sportsnet Pittsburgh
and pay $17.99 a month to watch every single Penguins and Pirates game throughout the season.
But I think that'll do it for this episode of the Locked-on Penguins podcast.
Thank you all so much for taking the time to listen to slash watch this episode.
Pat and I will be back with another show for you all on Tuesday.
We'll probably continue the season reviews and discuss other things relating to this wonderful hockey team.
But again, thank you all so much for tuning in.
We appreciate it.
We'll be back on Tuesday.
