a little bit of housekeeping before we really get going here, just so our listeners know, Hunter.
We are recording this on Sunday evening and dropping it on Monday morning.
So this will be in your feeds on YouTube Monday morning like normal.
But because of some work scheduling issues I've had in life just happening,
this is going to be a little bit of a weird week for the Locked-on Penguins podcast.
We are going to have Monday through Friday, like we all.
always do, but it's going to be dropping it weird times due to other jobs, due to Hunter going
to training camp. So we will still have our daily episodes, but it's going to be a bit of a
goofy week with everything going on just so you know. Now, with all that in the background,
let's get into the meat of this episode. Saturday night at PPG paints arena, the final game
for legendary Penguins goaltender Mark Andre Fleury.
And we're obviously going to go a little long because it was a great game.
It was a great tribute and everything.
But there is one word to describe it.
And it's perfect.
The Penguins did this perfectly.
Everything about it from top to bottom was great.
And just a hat tip to the Penguins organization to Mark Andre Fleury
and everybody involved for what was an amazing tribute for one of, if not the best goaltender in the history of the franchise.
Pat, you know, I really loved that Mark Andre Fleury got to play the third period instead of the first.
You and I were talking about this during our show on Friday where we were like,
hmm, is it going to play the first period?
Is the other goal we going to play the second and third?
No, Flurry was like, I was given the option to play the first or the third and I wanted to play the third.
And look, guys, Sergei Mirochov was spectacular in those first two periods.
He may very well be the goaltender of the future.
But this is all about Mark Andre Fleury.
This was a homecoming, eight years in the making.
And I think the Penguins and everyone involved handled this beautifully.
As for the crowd of this game, it wasn't like your typical preseason or even your typical regular season crowd pat where it's a Tuesday game.
late January, it's cold out, you're playing one of the worst teams in the league.
No, this felt like a playoff crowd.
Anytime Mark Andre Fleury did something, make a save, use his signature poachic,
which I loved seeing come out.
I had a smile on my face the whole time just because I was reliving childhood memories.
And hell, I was smiling that entire third period, honestly.
I just felt like I was watching a game from my childhood when I was like 12, 13, 14 years old as a teenager.
So that was awesome.
But anytime he did anything, including those things,
heck, even when he touched the puck with his stick and passed it to one of his teammates,
the crowd went wild.
It felt like a playoff crowd to me on Saturday, in my opinion.
Just an electric crowd from start to finish.
I also loved that the first three players to greet him when the final whistle blue were
Sidney Crosby, Evgeny Malkin, and Chris LaTang, as it should be with those four players.
They grew up together, their brothers forever, there'll be the core four here in Pittsburgh
Forever, Core 4, Big 4, whatever you want to say for it.
And you could tell a lot of them we're getting emotional and rightfully so.
And I just thought that this was the one night where everyone in this city and everyone watching could say,
hey, goodbye, this is it.
Thank you for the memories and you will be Pittsburgh Royalty forever.
Didn't give up any goals.
Pat, you and I were texting about this going into the third period.
Hey, they got a 2-1 lead.
How is this going to go?
And 4 was tested a little bit, made the right saves, and he gets to go out with the win.
They didn't get the shootout win.
Who cares?
That's not what we're here for.
But they got the win even though it was preseason and it was awesome seeing the crowd
just give him all that love, the interview.
with Dan Potash was awesome.
Just an all-in-all 10 out of 10 night for that hockey team.
You said something there that I got to expand on.
And it's that it was a goodbye eight years in the making.
Yeah.
And we were talking about this before we hit record.
There were a couple people, and it wasn't many,
but it was a few that said it was a little over the top.
It was a little bit much.
here's the thing.
It was a proper goodbye because, yes, he came to PPG Paints Arena last year with Minnesota.
It was a whole spectacle as well as it should have been.
And then they had a game later in the season in Minnesota.
And if you watched the second intermission interview with Flurry and Dan Potash,
and you listened to what Flurry said, this is a guy who is done.
he is hanging them up.
There's not going to be a year from now when he gets the itch again and comes out of retirement.
He talked passionately about how he wants to be a dad.
He wants to be a husband.
He wants to be there for holidays in soccer games, in recitals, and all of that stuff.
Because he talked about his career, his profession, being one where he was not home a lot.
And that is something that professional athletes go through all the time.
For what they do, they miss a lot of things that us normies are there for.
So this is a guy who is officially done.
He's officially retired.
In Pittsburgh got a much deserved goodbye for their favorite goalie.
I will say, though, Hunter, being the wrestling nerd that I am, I have to make this reference.
Del Bellouz with a great heel moment scoring in the shootout to win the shootout for Columbus on Mark Andre Flurry's night.
And the funny thing was even the goal itself, you could tell all three of the shooters for Columbus were like,
how can I make it look like I'm trying, but not really trying?
and Del Belluze's move was at maybe 50%,
but he did it well enough that Flurry did bite on it.
And you could kind of see after he scored,
he was like,
I didn't mean to do that.
And the game was over.
You know,
it kind of reminds me of,
you know,
when they would do like the shootout
in like the all-star festivities,
like the skills competition,
like this was,
you know,
a few years ago.
It kind of reminded me like that
where obviously the players in there,
they're just goofing on.
off having fun.
It wasn't all the way to that point, but you could tell the Columbus shooters were
trying to have a little bit of fun while also trying to make it look like, hey, we're
kind of trying here.
And one more thing, Pat, I did find this funny, and I texted you about this.
Ricardo Raquel getting the empty net goal and Mark Andre Fleury has a chance.
Boo him.
Now, we're just messing around.
We're messing around.
Ricardo Raquel, great game last night.
He was stupendous.
I just had to make the joke because I wanted to see Florey, at least,
go for the empty net with two to three minutes left i just had to joke yeah we we set it on the
friday show dan muses if you don't start flurry you're on the list he doesn't start him but then we find
out flurry had the choice so dan you're safe for now but rickle we're watching you buddy we're watching
you for that okay there was one thing we all wanted and you took it from us but but you also said this
Raquel was really good last night.
There were a few other players who were pretty good last night.
And the Penguins also played another game on Friday that was a pretty good effort.
We're going to talk about those games now that we got all the flurry, pomp and circumstance out of the way.
A perfect tribute to one of the best goalies in the history of the organization and a great send-off for what is sure to be a future Hall of Famer.
And that is going to do it for our opening segment.
Like I said, when we come back, we're going to take a look at the games against the Red Wings and the Blue Jackets,
who stood out, who didn't, and everything in between.
So stick with us.
We'll be right back right after this.
Before we do that, though, we've got to tell you about today's first sponsor, and that is Monarch Money.
Most people can't name all of their financial accounts or even what they're worth, whether it's 401Ks, properties,
investments, savings, you name it.
When you don't have the full picture, you can end up leaving money on the table.
table. That is why there is Monarch money. It's an all-in-one personal finance tool that brings your
entire financial life together in one clean, easy-to-use interface on your laptop or your mobile

putting all of my stuff right there, whether it's my bank accounts, my savings, credit cards,
you name it. It's all right there in an easy, easy, easy, not spreadsheet. I almost said

Back here on the Monday edition of Locked on Penguins, I'm Patrick Damp right alongside Hunter
Hodes. And like I said, now that we got all the flurry stuff out of the way, we have wiped the tears
from our eyes and we've got the smiles on our faces. We got to talk about two big penguins wins
over the weekend against the Detroit Red Wings and the Columbus Blue Jackets. So this is truly
a victory Monday in the city of Pittsburgh. Three and a weekend, Penguins with two wins,
Steelers with a big win in Ireland. But let's keep it funky here, Hunter. We don't
care about the outcomes of preseason games.
We care about the process.
The first player I want to talk about because I thought he had a tremendous
game on Saturday night.
It's Ben Kindle.
I still don't think he is going to make the team.
I think there's too many people above them.
I think he's still got junior,
or I know he's still got junior eligibility,
and he's still pretty raw.
But this is going to sound like a backhanded comment.
compliment, but I mean it in the strongest of terms.
My thought process watching him Saturday night was this kid does not look out of place whatsoever.
He certainly doesn't.
And if I am Damuze and the rest of this coaching staff, I am keeping him for the rest of this week,
going up almost all the way to opening night, and then I am sending him back to his junior team.
I know we're going to get some questions asking, should he get the nine game tryout?
I don't think he is ready for that just yet.
but I don't think he is far away from being HL ready.
You're probably looking at maybe a couple of seasons.
Like this year, Pat, for example, goes out, dominates the WHL.
Next season when the NHL-CHL-CHL rule really kicks in,
you can have him go down to Wilkesbury,
which will be big because I think by then for sure Brunick will be ready
for the NHL, in my opinion, at least for next season.
And then you can have him start down there.
If he starts lighting it up, maybe he gets a call up during that next season,
then maybe he's a full-time in the NHL or after that.
But I think as of right now,
you still need to send him back to Junior so that he can just keep developing.
You don't want to rush this type of player.
However, he really was awesome once again.
Some people are concerned about his skating.
And to me, I don't understand it.
Could he be a little bit better in a couple of areas?
Sure, I think he could be a little bit more explosive, excuse me, with his first burst.
But there was a play where he knifed around a defender for a prime
scoring chance in the offensive zone got a really nice shot off. And it was because of his dynamic
scanning ability. Again, he has a little bit of work to do, but his skating is still a plus.
You could see the hockey IQ really stand out throughout this game. It's also been standing out
in the other preseason games that he has played in as well. He's been creating dangerous scoring
chances throughout the entire week. And I'm not trying to be mean when I say this, but you could
just tell, especially during the draft on social media, there were a lot of people who simply
did not turn on the tape of this player and it shows the vision is great the hockey IQ is great he
has an underrated release he has good skating ability he has good two-way play and he's still only
18 years old if he keeps developing like this imagine what he is going to look like when he is
21 to 22 years old people i'm just saying so i love how this is going right now i would play him
honestly another preseason game or two and then you can send him back so those are my thoughts
on Ben Kindle. Real quickly,
Pap, before I do send this back to you.
Also, shout out Avery Hayes.
I thought he was really good last night, too.
The nifty little feed from him to Sidney
Crosby for his goal behind the back.
No look past, knew exactly where
Sid was going to be. Really good game
from him. He's also making a big push
for the roster right now.
Yeah, that area pass by
Avery Hayes, it's going to get
overlooked because it was a great
goal from Sid, all things
considered. But
what do we?
I always say about playing with guys like Crosby. Being able to play with elite players is a skill
within itself. And when you're a young guy getting paired with one of the best players of all
time in the preseason and you're trying to make the NHL roster, it would be really, really easy
to try to do too much, to try to match what Crosby does. And that's not to say you shouldn't
try to do that. You should. You should put your best foot forward. But
When you try to do the things that Crosby does, they are things that only he can do.
He and a few other players can do.
So Hayes having that awareness to just put in space, you know Cid's going to be there and let him run.
That's a really, really smart hockey play.
From good, we got to go to a little bit of bad.
Friday night against the Red Wings.
We talked about this on the show.
It's been all quiet on the Tristan Jar.
front was not a great showing by Tristan Jari in that game.
Plays a little over 30, a little over half the game, makes 11 saves, lets in two goals.
And it is, in my opinion, the classic Tristan Jari experience to where both of the goals were born
of bad play and bad defensive structure in front of him.
But you are allowed to make a save.
It wasn't to the point where everything went well and he just got beat on a bad shot or
didn't play his angle well.
But they were moments where they weren't the best of shots.
And yeah, there was bad defense in front of them or turnovers, but you need to make the
save there.
I will say this.
I didn't have a big problem with the first goal.
I think that was just a really nice release,
tough one for a jari to track.
The second one was really bad.
That is mostly an uncontested shot from about, what,
50, 55 plus feet right at the blue line.
You could even argue it was close to 60 feet.
You have to make a save there, man.
And it goes back to the struggles from last season.
You've got to get that out of your game.
But if he's not going to,
we're going to have more of these discussions during the season where he might have to go down to
Wilkesbury for a while and they might have no choice but to bring up someone like Blumquist for a bit once he's healthy
or even Sergei Murashav even though I still want him to spend most of this season in Wilkesbury
so that he can get a full season there before coming up to the NHL.
But that game, it didn't inspire much confidence for him.
And you and I, we don't have much confidence in him anyway.
I don't think anyone in this fan base has much confidence in him, but you said it.
You got to make a save there.
It's 50 plus feet out.
I was watching on an HL network, and you could kind of tell the Red Wings announcers,
they were kind of mocking Jari a little bit.
Like they were like, whoa, how did that go in?
It's like, well, this is what Jari does on a semi-nightly basis.
So he's had a fine camp, not as good as a couple of the other goalies,
but you've got to be better than that.
Outside of Jari, I thought Connor Dewar had a great goal in that game
to get them back in it.
Beautiful back.
I think that might be the best goal I've seen him score in a Penguins uniform,
even though I know it's only preseason.
Great pass from Jackson and I, by the way.
I also thought he had a good game, which he needed as he continues to try
and push for a spot on the right side.
Also, Robbie Fabri, Pat, getting a goal.
That's big for him as he tries to make this team on a PTO.
And finally, really nice feed from Philip.
Hollander to set up Philip Thomasino for the go-ahead goal, excuse me. And speaking of
Thomasino, he was a menace this whole game. We all know he's going to be on the team.
I think he was the best player on the ice for the penguins during that game, in my opinion.
He could have had three or four goals that game with the countless great A scoring chances he had.
So it was nice to see him get that game winner overall. So those are just some of my thoughts from
Friday's game. Yeah, Thomasino in Fabri, I thought had really strong games on Friday night.
The goal aside for Fabri, I thought he played a really simple, straightforward game that was extremely effective for the majority of the night.
And it was a really good step in the right direction for him trying to get a contract out of this PTO.
And for Tomicino, it's what we have talked about for the last year with him.
He was an impactful player, the majority of the game, but the challenge still remains for him.
can you continue to do this consistently?
Can you do this for four to five games at a time?
We know players like Tomasino aren't going to dominate for 82 games.
It's just not the kind of player he is.
He's not at that level.
But he needs to continue to string together multiple games at a time where he's very good.
And if he has a couple off nights, but not a bunch,
that's exactly what we want to see out of Philadelphia.
Thomas. One last player I want to bring up, and this is from Saturday night, I thought he didn't get on the
score sheet, but he had a damn good game. And that was Anthony Mantha. He was all over the place on Saturday
against Columbus. Colby Armstrong said it on the broadcast. There was a real world where he could have
had four goals in that game. He was creating offensively. He was playing with some physicality. He was
using his size. And this is kind of what we've been hoping for for Evgeny Malkin,
because it looks like when the team is fully healthy and the team is set going into opening
night, that's probably who is going to be with Hvgeny Malkin. And if he plays like that,
it could really help Malkin bounce back this year. He had a couple of nice chances. One of them
was on an on-man rush just couldn't beat Mers Likens. He also made some really nice saves during that
game, by the way, even had a few windmill saves as they,
call it. I also thought Miroshov again was great in the first two periods. There was one sequence
where Cole Cillinger was coming down on a two on one. He was trying to kind of outweighed
Miroshov and Miroshov just gave no ground, stood tight to the post and made the save look so easy.
Just a really nice play on that two on one. But yeah, no, I thought Mantha was very good. He was with
Gino a bit during the scrimmage on Sunday. I will say the scrimmage day, and we'll get to that in
just a second. A lot of power play work for the first time. But yeah, I agree with your thoughts.
And just wanted to shout out Miroshov continues to be a big standout during preseason and training camp.
We'll have to see if he gets the nod in the game on Monday.
If not, probably Wednesday.
There is three more preseason games this upcoming week.
Two wins for the penguins and a lot of standouts.
Again, we don't really much care about the outcomes, but it's a lot easier to learn lessons after you win than when after you lose.
But that is going to do it for this middle segment.
When we come back, Penguins made some roster cuts.
They had some practice time today.
We're going to go over all of that when we come back right after this.
But first, we got to tell you about today's second sponsor, and that is Fandul.
The NFL season is in full swing, and Fandul has an offer you don't want to miss.

the Monday edition of Locked on Penguins. I'm Patrick Damp right alongside Hunter Hodes. And
again, apologies. We're recording this on Sunday evening. So I have been jumping over every
tents from today, yesterday, whenever. Just know, it's the Monday edition. We're recording it on
Sunday. Thanks for hanging with us. But Hunter, you said it before we went to break. A lot of
power play work today Sunday at training camp. And what did you see from that? Because we know that
going into last year, we were like, well, if this power play can figure it out, they might be all right.
went on to have a pretty darn good power play,
but the rest of the team couldn't really figure it out.
So how did that power play look today?
So yeah, a lot of power play stuff during the scrimmage today.
It wasn't your typical five on five scrimmage.
No, we were rotating two minute periods,
I guess if you want to say it for 45 minutes where one team would have a power play,
other team would be penalty killing, and then the roles would switch.
So Team Black, you saw the main power play from Master Pat with Eric Carlson, Sidney Crosby,
Afghani Malkin, Brian Russ, Rickel.
You also did see Chris LaTang swapping with Carlson throughout that.
That was really fun.
And then you also saw Tomasino on a unit with Caleb Jones, Tristan Rose, Ben Kendall,
Philip Hollander.
By the way, Ben Kendall, he threaded a beautiful pass through a ton of traffic on the power plate
to a wide open Dan Hinen in front of the net who made no mistake for his team.
I just wanted to point that out because, again, Kendall just continues to have a great camp.
It was a really beautiful pass where you saw the vision.
You saw the hockey IQ on display.
I thought Billy Coyvenin also looked pretty good on the power plate today.
His goal was funny.
He banked it in off a defender.
He put his hands up like, hey, I did it.
But even though it wasn't your typical five-on-five scrimmage, it was still competitive.
These penalty killers were selling out to block shots, hit players along the boards.
It was a lot of fun for those 45 minutes.
And you really got to see that top power play get some good reps in against the penalty killers.
You continue to see Rickel get penalty killing minutes, which I found interesting.
Because Pat, when you look at his tenure here with the Penguins,
Ricardo Raquel doesn't even have five minutes of PK time.
His highest for his career is about 35 to 40 with the ducks.
I think he might break that, considering that we keep seeing him get more reps on the PK.
He is fairly fine defensively, and I think Damuz wants to tap into that a little bit more.
So I did want to bring that up.
So don't be surprised if you see Raquel a bit more on the penalty kill this year.
He's also been playing some more center.
They're trying to experiment with him a little bit more.
He was playing with Kendall and Covenant on Saturday.
So you might see a couple new looks with Raquel.
We all know that he's a great scoring.
but I think they want to tap into him a little bit more when it comes to just his overall game.
So that's something that I continue to notice with him.
This taps into something I said that I have an expectation of with Dan Mews this year.
And then he is going to have full license to go mad scientist this year with lines,
with the way he uses players, with what he does in certain situations.
And I think we're going to see that for more than just Raquel.
We're going to see it for a lot of players.
On the other hand of it, though, I have been screaming and a lot of fans have been screaming for this for a while.
You can put your top players on the PK, especially if you get down to under a minute.
Because then if you feel like you've got the momentum on the kill and you think you're going to kill off the penalty,
why not throw out your top players and try to spring yourself on offense?
Because you know that what you're going up against isn't your opponent's best defensive unit.
so you should try to use that to your advantage.
And as for Raquel, just overall, it does get kind of lost because he is a good scoring winger,
as you said.
He's also a pretty solid all-around player.
He's not going to win a Selke Award anytime soon, but in no world is he a liability
defensively.
So if that's the case and you think he can bring value to your P.K., why not do it?
Why not try it out?
He's also not terrible at center.
And if you keep giving him those reps,
you can really spread out some depth and see how it works if you want to put him at center.
But I like a lot of that real quick before we close out the show.
Earlier in the weekend,
the Penguins did make a few roster cuts ahead of Saturday night's game.
Not a lot of surprises.
The only one that really stood out to me is the,
and I should also say,
this takes the training camp roster down to 58 with these cuts.
The only one that stood out and it was more the fact that I kind of expected a little more from him this camp,
and that was Emil Pian and Emmy.
I look at it and I know that he wasn't on the same level as, say,
someone like Tristan Bros, who were kind of hoping ends up grabbing a spot.
I expected more out of him this camp, the way they had talked about him,
the way he was kind of hyped up.
And in no world was he bad, but I just kind of,
I find myself left one thing more from him right now.
I get where you're coming from,
but also at the same time,
I'm not really too surprised.
He was okay,
but he never really fully stood out during camp.
Now that he's going to have a full pro season in Wilkesbury,
let's see how he does it back camp and let's see how he does there this season.
He was never going to be NHL,
coming out of this training camp. I think if someone ever thought that, I think they were a little
delusional. This was more for me to see, okay, let's see where you are development-wise. And he still has
a little bit ways to go before he can become a full-time NHL defenseman. But I'm not surprised that he
was one of those first cuts. So he'll go down. I don't want to, I don't want to undo expectations on
him. I'm not saying I expected him to come up and light it up. But you could kind of see the hype machine behind
him. And I fully expected at one point or another him to go to Wilkes-Bair and them to put him in a more
prominent role because he wasn't going to get it with the NHL club. There was just, there's just
too many players ahead of him. He's still got a lot, not a lot, but he still has some
development to go through. And it's going to be better for him to be in a prominent role on a top
pair in big moments with Wilkes-bear. I just, I kind of expected to see more of him in the
this camp. But again, young player, a lot of potential, put him in a prominent role in the
HL, and he'll figure it out. Yeah, I think that part is fair. He'll go down there, try to have
a good first pro season, and let's see what happens. If he really lights it up down there,
maybe he can be a call-up way down the road this upcoming season, but still not really surprised
he was cut. And then as for the other players as well, Pat, no real surprises there either.
No, it's pretty much a lot of AHL guys getting sent to the Wilkes Bear Camp, and they're going to start that this week.
What also is going to happen this week, you're listening to this on Monday, on tonight, on tonight, he says,
they will play another preseason game this time at the Detroit Red Wings.
Once again, we're recording this on Sunday, so we do not have the lineup to break down for you.
But when we come back on Tuesday, we will recap that.
that game and any other news that might happen between now and then.
But that is going to do it for the Monday edition of Locked-on Penguins.
Thank you, as always, for tuning in.
Hunter and I will be back with a brand new episode for you on Tuesday.
