Penguins president of hockey operations, Kyle Dubus had himself a busy weekend, getting a bunch of players signed to contracts for the 26-27 season.
And we're going to break down those deals on the Monday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast.
You're Locked-on Penguins, your daily podcast on the Pittsburgh Penguins, part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day.
Happy Monday, everyone, and welcome in to the locked on penguins podcast.
I am one of your hosts, Patrick Damp.
You can find me on most social media platforms at synonym for wet.
Joined as always by the man himself, Hunter Hodes.
You can find Hunter on Twitter at Hunter Hodes.
Just a reminder off of the top.
We are officially in off-season mode.
So we will have episodes this week today, Wednesday, and Friday.
And that is our plan for the majority of the offseason.
Some things may change depending on guest availability, our schedules.
But for the next couple of months, we will be in your podcast feeds on Monday,
Wednesday, and Friday.
With that said, praise be to Kyle Dubis, who didn't seem like he wanted us to have any rest this week.
as we're down to three episodes, he also made it so we had some content.
Lots to get into today on the contract front, including Hendricks LaPierre,
Arter Shilovs, Yoel Blumquist, and David Gustafson.
But of course, let's start with the biggest one of them all.
Igor Chinikov signs a three-year, $6.25 million per season deal.
ultimately it is a bridge deal for Chinikov, but here's where I'm going to begin this, Hunter.
I like this deal quite a lot for everybody involved.
And here's why.
Essentially, it's a $4 million raise for Chinatov, but given where the salary cap is,
Chinokov putting up 36 points in 43 games last year with the Penguins.
That's pretty much the going rate for a player,
as him. Then on the other side of it over the next three years, if he lives up to the deal or even
exceeds it, great. If it looks cheap for the next three years, even better. And if he looks like he is
going to be that long term piece, the penguins want him to be with where the salary caps going,
not a big deal again. You will likely be able to afford giving him another raise. And then on the
other other side of it. If he doesn't, this is not a number that handcuffs you whatsoever for the
next few years. It's very affordable. So overall, Hunter, tidy work by Kyle Dubus. So your thoughts on
the contract and then we'll keep this segment just about Chinikov expectations where we think
he's going to go, what he needs to do to remain a long-term penguin. But overall, your thoughts on the
contract. First off, I just want to shout out Adam Lombardi, who listens to this show quite a bit.
I met him July 4th at Rookies and Brentwood. Thank you for coming over to say hello.
Thank you for saying you enjoy the pod. I really do appreciate it. Pat also does as well.
I just wanted to start off with that. Now, for the Chinacov contract, you and I talked about this
at length a few times before this was signed. Penguins really, they only had two options here.
They could give him term with this type of money, or they could bridge him and kind of say,
prove that you can do this for the next few years before we give you a much bigger payday.
And they opt with that one. And I am totally fine with it, by the way. He gave you a glimpse of what he
can do at least in half the season. 18 goals, 36 points in 43 games. Pat, that's right around for
like an 82 game season, right around a 70 point pace if my elementary school math is doing well there.
But that's what I believe. And now he'll have an opportunity to see if he can build off
that for next season, the year after, and then a year after that. And if he does,
not only will he get a bigger payday, he'll get some good term on that contract. I'm talking,
you know, six plus years. If he performs really well, say he scores 40 plus goals, maybe he's
making over $8 to $9 million per season. I saw some people pack that kind of scoffed at the price.
This is kind of the going rate now, man. The guy had 18 goals and 36 points in 43 games.
If you're betting on upside, I am totally fine with giving him 6.25 million.
They also still have a decent amount of cap space.
And I think they're going to open up more this offseason
because I think they're going to trade a forward or two
as we get deeper into it before training camp.
At least that's my opinion.
So I like this contract.
I think of the contracts that Kyle Dubas signed,
this is my favorite one.
I am really excited to see what he can do next to of getting Malik in this upcoming season.
And then in the next two seasons, assuming Malcon does retire,
how he plays.
with his other center, whoever that is.
But overall, big fan of this.
I'm excited.
And he could be in line for a really big payday if he plays fall on this contract.
Right.
And the thing to keep in mind is when this contract comes to its conclusion, he'll be 28.
This isn't like he is going to be in his 30s when this contract expired.
And you can give him a lot of term by then.
He still very much will be in his prime and his prime earning days when this contract reaches
its conclusion. And then on the other thing about this is you have, and if this would have gone to
arbitration, I imagine this would have been the penguin's argument with the arbitrator,
is that even if you take out his stats with Columbus this year, 29 games, six points,
he still would have reached career highs this year, but they're also extreme outliers,
save for one year in 23, 24 when he had 29 points.
So if you're the penguins, you're looking at this and thinking, okay, he has earned a
raise.
He's earned a payday, but we're not convinced yet that he is a lock to do this again.
And it's no shot at him.
I look at the way he played the game this year.
This is the Igor Chinikov that everybody was promised in years past.
but there is always, always that chance that a player like Chinikov has a flash in the pan year
and goes right back to what he has been since.
I'm extremely skeptical and doubtful that that is what is going to happen with him
because a lot of what he did this year, not only did it look sustainable.
The other big key to this is a lot of it was five on five.
He did this at even strength.
He was great off the rush.
He was great as a forechecker.
He has speed for days.
The release is disgusting.
And how about this, Pat?
Put him on the power play next season.
And I'm talking power play one.
Put them on there.
We all know how good the Penguins power play was for most of the season.
Chinakov, even after he was acquired, he was on Power Play 2 for a lot of it.
Though the best game, I think, for him on the Power Play was that game against Boston.
Remember when they came back from three goals down?
And he literally wheeled the Penguins back himself.
self almost in a way. Put him on there, let him run with that opportunity, especially if you move
someone like a Rust or Raquel this off season, he's a pure sniper. He will fire it from anywhere
in the offensive zone. So give him some more power playments. We all know what he can do at five on five.
I want to see him more on the main advantage. I think even if you don't move Rust or Raquel right
away in this off season, he is a favorite of this show. He is a favorite of mine. He's a favorite of
yours, but Brian Rust can very much be put down on power play too.
That's fine.
In exchange for Igor Chinikov, because the release alone, putting him on the wall on a
power play, whether it's for a one-timer or a quick snapshot, that would be a lethal
option to have on your top power play.
So I look at the expectation now that he has this deal signed.
And I think for next year, looking at what he did with the Penguins this past year,
I want to see 25 goals and I want to see 60 plus points because granted, yes, this is the going
rate for somebody like him right now, but you got the deal.
You're going to have a full training camp, a full off season, and then a full season with the
club.
So I want to see him get to that point where he scores 25 goals.
in 60 points going into next year.
I can see that.
I mean, hell, Pat, in half a season, he had 18 goals.
So I think if he builds on that momentum,
there's no reason to think he can't score 25 plus
or maybe even 30, 35 plus next season.
Again, I don't want to put outrageous expectations out there
because, again, it was only half a season,
but everything that he was doing
once he came over from Columbus felt very sustainable.
Now, again, he still has to build on it.
But nothing felt like a fluke when he came over from the blue jacket.
So I just want to see how that keeps up.
And again, he has a great bromance with Afghani Malkin,
and I'm really excited to see that in action for a full season because those two love playing with one another.
They really do.
They had a lot of chemistry.
And I do think that is going to carry into next season.
So once again, three year deal for Igor Chinikov, 6.25 million per.
He got the deal.
now it's on him to live up to it or hopefully exceed it.
But those were, that was not the only contract that Kyle Dubus got done over the weekend.
Several more were signed.
We're going to break those down when we come back right after this.
Before we do that, though, we've got to get to one of our sponsors for today.
And that is Fandul.
The biggest stage in world soccer is here and in full swing.
And every match feels like it.
has the potential for a memorable moment.
One goal can completely change the energy of a game,
shift momentum and alter the outcome in an instant.
That's what makes tournament soccer so exciting from the opening whistle until the final kick.
Now, Fandall is giving fans another reason to stay locked into every match with every goal
pays.
Bet on a match and get bonus bets for every goal scored in that match.
More goals means more bonus bets.
And all you have to do is turn on your token.
We've all seen those matches during this tournament.
They seem to happen every match in the knockout round where it's scoreless for what feels like forever.
Then a goal gets scored.
Everything flips.
Suddenly the pressure's on.
Everybody's pressing.
The crowd is alive.
And the final 20 or so minutes become must watch television.
And now you get to benefit from each goal scored from the opening.
whistle until the final kick. Let there be goals on Fandul. Visit fandul.com to get started now.
Welcome back to the Monday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast, Patrick Damp right alongside Hunter
Hodes. And as we said at the top, old Kyle Dubus was a busy bee this weekend, getting a lot of
deals signed and a lot of players locked up for this upcoming season. We'll go by length here, Hunter, just to keep it
of organized. So we'll start with goaltender Yoel Blumquist. Two-year deal, $875,000 at the
NHL level. I know he is kind of fallen out of favor, so to speak, with the emergence of Sergey
Murashav. But if he doesn't pan out, as we like to say, it's never a bad idea to have
goalies in your system. In speaking of goalies, another goalie gets.
It's a contract.
Arter Sheelov's one year deal, $2.8 million for next season.
This tells me a couple of things, Hunter, and then I will pass it off to you.
First, the obvious, the tandem this year, if everything goes to plan,
Arter Sheelov's, Sergey Murashav.
Sheelov's performance in the last couple of games of the Flyers series showed us that this was very much earned.
he stepped up in a big way, played really, really well the last couple of games of that series.
And now for him, it's on him to find a way to kind of beat back the Sergei Murashav era
and show that he can be a starter, whether it's here or somewhere else.
And the other very, which is related to Sergey Murashav,
giving him just a one-year extension tells me that they fully expect,
Sergei Murrishov to take the leap and take the net in the 27-28 season.
Potentially, I also do think with Shilovs, Pat, the first thing that really jumps out to me is
they want him to be, I think, a bit more consistent this upcoming season, regular season-wise,
because, yes, he showed his big game pedigree in the playoffs.
He was sensational in the second half of that series against the Flyers, who's just making
timely save after a timely save, great save after great save.
And you've seen him do this with the Canucks.
You've seen him do this with the Abbotsford Canucks as well in the AHL.
Like he was really, really good in the quarter cup playoffs, in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Did it here in Pittsburgh now.
It's about fine-tuning his game to get him to be a bit more consistent during the regular season
because there were stretches pat where he'd play really well.
And then he'd progress.
Then he'd play well a little bit.
Then he regress.
And then you see his regular season stats at the end.
And they're a bit of a jumbled mess where, yep, you had some.
highs and you had some lows. So I think if he does well this season, I could see them giving him
a bit longer of a contract, maybe two to three years, because he is expected to be an RFA.
Again, after this upcoming season, he also will have arbitration rights so he can take the
penguins to an arbiter if he feels like it. But honestly, to me, this kind of feels like a
prove it deal, almost, even though he did play well in the playoffs. Like, okay, you did that.
Go out here this season. Show what you.
can do in like a 1A role and then we'll make a decision on you for your longer term future after
this season i do agree with you about the tandem i think this is probably lining up for sergey murashov
to be the one b slash backup unless something changes in blumquist just completely a blows him away
at camp and preseason or murashov just stinks in camper preseason this is what i'm expecting
if she loves murashov combo with blumquist i am fine with a two-year deal
not a lot of money.
At the very least, he can be your starter in Wilkesbury again next season.
He can form a decent pairing with Taylor Gaudier
because down the stretch of this season,
a lot of it was Murshov and then Murshov got all the starts in the playoffs.
And that was their plan all along.
They wanted to give him those starts in those moments to see what he could do.
And I think for the most part, he passed those tests.
So now with Blumquist, he's probably the starter right now.
Gaudier is going to be like that one B slash backup now that he is ready
for the AHL, though he's been ready, I think,
the last year or two.
But, you know, in a pinch, Pat,
if one of those two goalies gets hurt,
you can call up Y'all Blumquist at the initial level.
Though, I also kind of wonder,
are they going to go get a third goalie
for, like, a veteran presence,
that if you need at times,
you've seen some of these teams,
do it, Pat, like Montreal did it a little bit.
You've seen Buffalo do it as well.
They kind of have, like, a third goalie there
in case one of their younger goalies got hurt,
so I'm kind of, I'd understand if they went that route,
But as of right now, I still think the tandem for next season is going to be Sheelof and Mershov,
barring something unforeseen happening.
So those are my main thoughts on the Blumquist and She Loves contracts overall.
I do think that they'll probably just stick with the goalies they have.
They may invite someone on a PTO to camp.
I can see that.
They might do something like that.
But I do think at this point with the way Kyle Dubus is running the team and the way he is,
the moves he is making.
I do think that they're just going to let the goalies in the organization do what they
have to do.
He's essentially treating it like the dad on vacation who throws his kid into the pool and
says, all right, teach yourself to swim.
And if you swim, great.
If you don't, we'll find someone else.
So I do think that there may be a veteran who is hanging around close to camp that they give a
PTO to.
And if they play well, you maybe go, okay, there's our.
There's our insurance policy, but I really do think it it leans more towards just the players who are in the organization.
Another two-year deal handed out by Kyle Dubus this weekend was for forward Hendricks LaPierre, a two-year deal, 1.3 million per season.
Totally fine with this.
It's a depth guy who is going to be battling for a spot in the bottom six.
As you and I have discussed multiple times, the thing that is going to be.
nice about training camp for the next few years is there are going to be actual battles
for roster spots.
This isn't going to be like the 2010s where we're just counting the days down until the
regular season begins because we know who's going to make the team.
So I'm cool with this.
I think that is a good depth signing.
And then one more contract to get to $850,000 for one year for David Gustafson,
in case you forgot.
He was acquired from Winnipeg in exchange for Jack St. Ivany, 26-year-old,
he's a good depth piece.
He's probably going to spend most of the year in the A,
and he'll be there when injuries arise at forward.
But overall, we're not going to dive too much into this because we're going to have all summer to do it,
but it does feel like we're getting to a point now with the forwards who are signed
where something is going to have to give here eventually,
whether it be a trade or something like that because they have a lot of forwards right now.
Oh yeah, and Hendricks-Lap here, I expect him on the NHL roster once next season begins.
Now, whether he's in an everyday role or whether he's a little bit of a 13 forward,
that should be determined because he still has to go out there and earn his gig.
A lot of the bottom six wards are going to have to go out there and do it some of the younger players as well.
But I still think he's going to be on the roster.
I have no problem with that contract.
It's kind of what I expected.
Gustafson, Pat, yeah, he's more of a Wilkesbury player,
and if injuries arise, you can recall him.
Wilkesbury's center depth was hit pretty hard last season,
and you see during the offseason, it's been hit a little bit as well,
but by getting Gustafsson, he can play a lot of center minutes,
and it just helps out their structure down there
as they try to make another run of the Calder Cup playoffs for next season.
So totally fine with that contract.
And now, Pat, before we get to Nick Robertson,
he is one of two RFAs the Penguins have yet to sign.
him in Philly Coivinant.
Coiffinant, I don't think it's going to be too hard.
It's going to be a very cheap contract on a short term,
and he has a lot to prove, obviously,
this offseason going into camp
where he is going to try to make this team
and build off some of the success that he had in the A,
but again, it's kind of high time at this point,
Pat, for him to really make the team in the camp,
and then for Robertson, I'll just say this as a tease.
I don't expect this to be big trouble,
and I expect this to be done before an arbitration date.
Yeah, me too.
And I also, if I'm looking at it correctly, I don't think Covenin is Arb eligible.
I do think that this is a player that at least according to Puckpedia, he's offer sheet eligible,
but I don't think he is eligible for arbitration.
So at this.
He never also filed for arbitration.
So that's.
Yeah, right.
So at the end of the day, this feels more like a Coivenins camp in the Penguins,
are in discussion.
They're going to get something figured out.
But like you said, it's a big prove-it year for him because he was really good
with the baby penguins in the regular season and in the Calder Cup playoffs wasn't as good.
I think it was a little bit unfair the criticisms he got at the NHL level,
but there is no denying that he did underwhelm at the NHL level this year.
So it is time for him to figure it out at the NHL level.
if he wants to stick.
But do think that one's going to get done.
Hunter, you brought it up.
That's a good tease for our final segment.
One Penguins player has filed for arbitration,
and it is newly acquired forward Nick Robertson.
I've got a little something I'm going to tell Hunter
that I don't think he's expecting.
But you know what?
You got to stick with us to hear that.
We will do that when we come back right after this.
But we got one more sponsor.
to get to before that and it is our pals at Odu. Running a business shouldn't feel like you're trying
to connect a bunch of systems that were never designed to work together. One app for accounting,
another for inventory, another for sales, and somehow none of them talk to each other. That is where
Odu comes in. Odo is an all in one business management software that brings every part of your
business together in one powerful platform. From sales and accounting to inventory and marketing,
Everything works in one place, helping your team move faster, stay organized, and focus on growing the business instead of managing software.
The best organizations know that success isn't just about talent.
It's about having everyone working toward the same goal.
And that is also true in sports, just like it is in business.
We've been talking about it on this episode.
Midseason last year, the penguins bring in Igor Chinikov.
now they sign him to a three-year extension, all because they knew he would fit right into
the Penguins organization.
Great organizations win because operations matter, and that is why you should be using
Odo.

We're finishing up the Monday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast.
I'm Patrick Damp.
He's Hunter Hodes.
And as I have said over and over this episode,
a busy weekend for the Pittsburgh Penguins,
despite the July 4th holiday.
While they avoided arbitration with the likes of Chinikov,
Shilov's Blumquist and Gustafson,
they will be heading to arbitration with Nick Robertson.
32 points in 78 games last year with the Maple Leafs made 1.825 million
on a one-year deal.
And like I said before the break, Hunter,
I am going to take this to a place and in a direction
I don't think anybody is going to expect here.
I'm starting off Nick Robertson's tenure with the Penguins,
a tad worried.
Now, of course, I'm all for player empowerment.
He's exercising his contractual right to go to arbitration
rather than sign a deal.
All good for that.
Want to see the players get.
paid because they are the ones who make the money. But here's where I get a little tripped up.
Between multiple trade requests in Toronto and now going to arbitration here in Pittsburgh,
it does feel like Nick has a pretty high opinion of themselves. And we know the potential's
there. We know the work ethic is there. You talk to any Toronto fan, all of his shortcomings
and the things that they critiqued for him, not a one of them questioned his effort. He,
was full tilt full time when he was in the lineup. Even amid trade requests in unhappiness with the
organization, the puck dropped. Nick Robertson was playing and he was playing hard. But for now,
though, I look at it as he has got to earn this. He has to really prove it this year. He's flexing
his contractual right, like I said, but if you settle on two and a half, three million dollars,
whatever it is, and tell him to go kill it.
I do think the environment that he is coming into in Pittsburgh, he will do that.
But right now, before we get to that point, as we're in arbitration,
mixed with the way he, I don't want to say conducted himself,
because it makes it sound like he's a diva,
but just with all the drama that surrounded him in Toronto,
it has me a little uneasy.
I think with this, he kind of did it in case something weird came up.
in the contract talks because, I mean, there's really, I mean, there's no bad blood between
the Penguins and they just acquired him last week. Yeah, yeah, I don't think it's bad blood.
I think this is more just talking about Nick Robertson himself. And it's in, and to be clear,
I'm not saying he's a bad guy. I'm not saying he's a bad player. It's just you have multiple
trade requests. You eventually get it granted. And you've been find a good since you've entered the
NHL, it's just at some point you were waiting for that breakout season and it very well could be this
year. Yeah, I mean, maybe he does pot 20 plus this year and then maybe he earns up the next payday on
the next contract because I do think this is going to get settled before his ARB date. Now, Pat,
they haven't released those yet because there were 15 players that filed for arbitration.
Nick was one of them, his brother, Jason, of course, in Dallas was one of them who wanted to see what
happens, of course, with that situation. But they haven't put out the ARV dates for those players as soon as
they do. We'll talk about here on the pod, but whatever that is, probably sometime in August,
they're going to settle before that. And they'll finish up a contract. If I had to guess,
it's going to be one to two years for two to two point five million per season. Just had a career
year, 16 goals, 302 points. His goal total has gone up the last few years. So that might drive up
the price just a teeny bit, but it's not going to be more than $3 million or anything like that.
I think he mainly filed for arbitration just in case something, you know, weird happened.
But I don't foresee any disputes here, anything strange happening.
I think this is going to be fairly straightforward.
And I think they are going to come to an agreement before the R date, which will probably be sometime in August, like I said.
So really no problem with it.
That's really him and Covenant, again, that's really the last two pieces of re-signings that they got to do this off season.
otherwise it's about making trades sending someone out maybe bring it someone else in you know
we talk about robertson eliot freeman talked about alias peterson this morning on 32 thoughts you and i
have talked about alias peterson on the show before other than this contract with robertson and coivenin
that's what they're going to focus on pat right now they have 16.9 million in cap space assuming
robertson takes two million of that you're down to 14.9 if it's 2.5 it's 14.4 and i saw some people that
we're a bit concerned about that, that's still a decent amount.
And you have an opportunity to open up more if you want to by moving out a forward or two,
just because there's a pretty big log in right there.
So you'll be able to get more cap space.
So for those that could be a little concerned that their salary cap space has gone away.
Right now, it's listed at $16.9 million.
Please, you don't have any reason to worry.
And Pat, they're going to have a craps on a cap space next offseason as well.
Right.
And that's the thing.
To that point, you know,
any moves that they're going to make this summer before we get to camp, they are going to move money
out. It may not be a ton. It may be some some moves on the margins because some of these players
that get mentioned like Petterson, you're going to have to give something back. They're not just
going to get him for nothing. So there will be money moved out. And then like you said,
next offseason when we're sitting here July 6th, 2027, they're going to have even more cap space
by that point. So there's no need to worry about the cab space. But to the original point,
I think you've actually now at this point talked me down a little bit because I do think
that's a piece of it that I missed, that he's probably just ensuring that there isn't any
silliness in his contract. But I just, I looked at it this morning and thought, you know,
he very much maybe, it wasn't horribly public. It wasn't like Robertson was,
step into the mic and saying Toronto sucks.
I hate it here. I want to leave.
But he was public that he wanted to move on and he wanted a bigger role.
And granted, like I said, he never stopped playing for them.
He never gave a crap effort.
He always gave it as all.
But I just, I look at it and I go, listen, kid, eventually you got to put the numbers up.
And he had a career year.
So I don't blame him for trying to get a little bit more money out of it.
And at the end of the day, though, I do think you're right.
I do think that they'll have this settled before they go to arbitration.
He'll get locked up and we'll work towards hopefully having a better year and becoming a bigger piece with the penguins.
Because I continue to say, as nice as it would be to get Jason,
and I'm not saying they shouldn't try or deny getting him.
But I do think there is a lot of upside in Nick's game and for him to grow into a significant contributor for whatever team he's with.
at the penguins or anyone else.
And Hunter, unless you've got anything left to add,
I think that is going to do it for the Monday edition of Locked-on Penguins.
Like I said off the top of the show, we are in summer off-season mode.
So we will be back with a brand new episode for you on Wednesday.
Then we'll be back on Friday.
So just a reminder, Monday, Wednesday, Friday, most of the time this off-season.
But for now, for Hunter,
hodies. I am Patrick Damp. Thank you as always for tuning in and we will be back on Wednesday.
