Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins - Penguins RECALL Tristan Broz, injured players closer to a return
Episode Date: November 25, 2025Tristan Broz has officially been recalled by the Pittsburgh Penguins, and head coach Dan Muse confirmed he will debut on Wednesday night! While exciting, Patrick and Hunter start the show discussing t...he goaltending situation and how Tristan Jarry is inching closer to a return, which means that Sergei Murashov is likely to be sent back down to the AHL in the coming days. They talk about how, while it would be nice to see Murashov continue to get NHL action, it's probably best for his development to get a starter's workload with the Baby Penguins. (0:00) Next, Hunter gives his impressions from practice at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, and how we saw a shuffling of the forward lines, and what that could mean for the Penguins moving forward. (13:51) Finally, it's time to talk about the kids. They get into Broz's recall, what he has to do to stick with the big club, and his amazing comments not long after being recalled. $5 bet wins more on them later. Hunter, let's start with the very obvious that I think everybody,
if you're following along like the sickos that we all are when it comes to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Sergey Murshov era in Pittsburgh is probably going to stall here for just a little bit
because at practice today, Tristan Jari, Arter Shilovs, and Sergey Murshov were all getting work in.
Murshov not getting a ton of reps during today's practice.
So it looks as if Tristan Jari is on track to return sooner rather than later, which means
Sergei Marashov is probably headed back to the American Hockey League.
Yeah, it does look like that, Pat, because I was at the full practice today,
and Marashav really didn't get any reps at all.
It was all Jari and Shilovs.
If I had to guess right now, I think Shilov is going to start the annual Thanksgiving Eve game
on Wednesday against the Sabres with Jari backing him up.
And then to take it a step further, I think you're going to see Jari and Shilov split the
weekend back to back to Mac, meaning Marashav is going to go back to Wilkesbury.
And that's the prudent move.
You saw a lot of the potential that he has in his first few starts,
though his last start, he gave up a couple of goals that I'm sure he wants back.
You and I also discussed that during the Monday episode.
Now the goal for Muroshov is keep dominating down in Wilkesbury,
be the number one goalie, and then after the year,
we can have an even more in-depth conversation about him potentially being fully
NHL ready by the start of next season.
His time is coming, people, and I'm still very high on him and his long-term future,
but you've got to get this development right.
So if anyone's going to be a little upset about him going down to Wilkesbury,
trust me, you shouldn't be.
It's a totally good move to me.
Yeah, I do think that, again, I bring up the shiny new toy metaphor all the time.
We want to rip it out of the packaging on Christmas morning
and play with it for the entire day when it comes to a lot of the young players,
especially Sergei Murashov, who has arguably been the penguin's best goaltender this year,
both out of training camp and through some of his starts in the NHL level.
But I do look at it this way as well, as he still has to prove that he's ready to be a full-time starter.
And I know people will point the last year when he had a lot of good runs with both Wheeling and Wilkes-Bair,
but he was really operating out of a platoon the last season with both the nailers
and the baby penguins where he had other goaltenders stepping in.
He would go on some extended stretches for a week or two where he got the majority of the starts,
but then he would be backing up for the next week or two after going through that stretch.
Now you want to see him really start to grab a starter's workload with the baby penguins.
which is unfortunate for Yoel Blumquist whenever he gets healthy,
that he's probably going to really kind of be a backup for Wilkes Bear.
Well, he is healthy now, I will say.
I couldn't remember if he was still getting healthy.
But either way, that does suck for Blumquist,
but for the long-term project within the franchise,
it is going to have to be Murshov getting the lion's share of the starts
to see how he holds up.
Can he handle that workload?
Can he keep a consistent level throughout the rest of the season?
And if he is able to prove that, which I very much think that he will,
going into training camp next year,
depending on what they want to do with the roster overall,
if they want to hold on to Archer Shilovs after this season,
if they find a way to trade Tristan Jari,
the door very much could be open for him to take the starting job.
in the NHL, but that is so far ahead from where we are right now.
Let's keep it with the goalies.
Obviously, you saw that both Jari and Shilov's got the majority of the work at practice,
something that I am really curious to see now with Jari looking like he's ready to get back
to health.
It doesn't seem like he, I imagine they wouldn't put him in net against the Sabres tomorrow
night on Thanksgiving Eve, just because he's getting.
right back to getting ready that you want to kind of give them that runway to get ready again.
But my biggest spotlight for the rest of this season, regardless of anything else that
happens, I want to see what Tristan Jari does the rest of this year because through seven
starts this year, five and two record, two point six goals against average, 9-11 save
percentage. Can he keep this up?
That's the question.
we all know the first half of his seasons are a lot better than the second half. So
honestly, Pat, I'm more curious to see how he does once the calendar flips to January
because his saber sentence from January 1st on compared to the first half of seasons is a lot
lower. So that's what I'm really curious about. And another thing, I was listening to 32
thoughts on Monday and Elliot Freeman put on his little wonderer hat just because he likes
to do that a lot during the show. And he said he got a note from someone saying,
that the penguins could have, you know, a couple of goalies available.
And, you know, the one thing that popped in my head, of course, is, you know,
Jari keeps playing well, maybe there's a team out there that gets suckered into trading
form, or maybe that's more for you all Blumquishish is because the penguins are really high
on Murrishav, or maybe it could be for Philip Larson.
At some point, the point is they're going to have to make a move for one of these goalies.
It's not going to be Murashov.
I don't think it's going to be Shilov.
The most likely candidates are Jari, Blumquist, or maybe Philip Larson, one of those three.
So upon Chris is back healthy now.
And he's playing in Wilkesbury, which is obviously great.
I'm glad that he's back healthy.
Jari has been good for the most part all year outside of that really bad period against the Maple Leafs.
So if he continues that, you know, maybe his value goes up.
But I think with the way that he has played, it's the prudent move to keep rotating him in Shelovs throughout the year,
especially with the way Sheloves has played as well.
He's been one of the best goaltenders in the league.
He has.
And I don't think it would be a challenge per se to move.
Shilovs, because he is an RFA at the end of the season.
So granted, that does continue to give the team control rather than becoming an expiring
UFA.
But I do think if they are really into wanting to make this a youth movement, I think you
have to hold on to Shilov simply because, one, there is still a lot of potential there.
We kind of forget that this is a young goalie.
He is 24 years old.
He'll be 25 at the end of the season.
So this is a kid who we know with goalies.
It is extremely rare for them to come into the league at 18, 19, 20 and really be a finished product.
It takes a while to adjust to NHL shooters, NHL speed in just the way the game operates at the NHL level that goaltenders take a little while to become a finished product.
So at 24, there is still a lot of potential for Shilovs to become whatever he may be,
whatever he may become.
The thing that I was thinking about this morning, and this is why I am a dumbero with a podcast
and not a president of hockey operations or a general manager,
the team that continues to pop into my head, if you want to find a way to get rid of Tristan Jari,
send him back to where he played juniors.
The Edmonton Oilers really need a goalie.
But here's part of the reason I would be afraid to make that move if I was both Edmonton.
And maybe not the Penguins, because if you can get salary off the books and clear the way,
things are going to look good for that.
But I do, the chicken and egg thing that I always have about Tristan Jari is this.
Is Tristan Jari a starting goalie who has just been playing?
behind a team that is really bad defensively?
Or is he just not a good starting goalie?
Because you look at the way the Penguins have played this year.
Have they been tremendous defensively?
No, but they have definitely been better than the last couple of years.
And what do you know, Tristan Jari's having himself a pretty good start.
So I look at Edmonton and I go, that team's struggling pretty hard defensively.
So Tristan Jari might not be the answer.
It might not even be a goaltending issue in Edmonton because they can't.
play defense. The goaltending is part of it. The defense is also part of it, but that team as a whole
has just been very inconsistent to start this season, which is on a surprise because over the last
couple of seasons, they've also been inconsistent to start before they get on a heater. And then
obviously, you know, they go to two straight standing like the finals. I know they lost both, but
still, I look up and down the roster this year. It's really just the Conner and Leon show,
like it is basically every single year. But also, Pat, on paper, I agree with you. But the
Oilers would have to make something work because you look at their current cap of space per
puckpedia, a little over 150,000, and that's it.
So they would have to really make something work here to even consider that.
Skinner and Pickard, they're both UFAs after this season.
Skinner makes 2.6.
Pickard makes one.
So, you know, is one of those goleys going out on a different deal?
It's one of those always coming back.
A little bit of spitballing, silly season.
I think it makes sense on paper, at least for the Penguins perspective, but for Edmonton
I think with their cap situation, they're going to have to do something
angling just because they don't have a lot of cap space right now.
No, they're in a really tough position.
But I obviously am not here to make any big time scoops or trade proposals.
I just, I think of the way Jari has started the season,
I think of the comfort level he would have in Edmonton going back to where he played
juniors.
And I do think there could be a fit there.
But again, that is putting the cart so far ahead of the horse.
We got to see how he performed.
now that he is coming back to health.
And obviously, we want to see Sergei Murashov do a really good job with the baby penguins
and take another step to potentially becoming the penguins starting goaltender.
But we're not done talking about practice because Hunter Hodes ever dedicated to the hockey news
and locked on penguins.
Our boy was there at UPMC Lemieux.
We've got more to talk about from practice.
So hang with us.
We're going to be right back to tell you more about all of Hunter's observations today.
right after this.
But first, we've got to tell you about today's first sponsor,
and that is Fandall, the NBA.
It's back, and there is no better place to get in on the action than Fandul,
the official sports betting partner of the NBA.
Even if you miss the start of the game or you just want to ride the hot hand,
Fandle has live bets on everything from who will score to fourth quarter comebacks.
Plus, you can even combine your bets into a.
same game parlay for a shot at a bigger payout.
Obviously, this is a hockey podcast based in Pittsburgh, not big hoops, guys.
But hey, you got Steelers bills this weekend.
And it's been a pretty mid-silly NFL season.
So I bet there's quite a few bets you could take there with the Steelers and bills this Sunday,
including if our ever inconsistent Steelers can somehow find a way to beat the Buffalo
bills.
There's going to be plenty of action for you there.
And Fandual keeps every game exciting.
especially when your team is making that late push.
Right now, Fandul is giving new customers $300 in bonus bets
when your first $5 bet wins.
So head to fandul.com to sign up and play your game with Fandul,
the official sports betting partner of the NBA.
All right, we're back here on the Tuesday edition of Locked-on Penguins.
I'm Patrick Damp running alongside Hunter Hodes,
who braved the rain and the Pittsburgh drivers to head to UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex for practice this morning
and pretty exciting line combination at practice today.
Center Tristan Bros with Tommy Novak and Ville Covenin, who is working his way back from injury.
So this youth movement hunter starting to come together on this.
this Penguins roster, wouldn't you say?
Bit by bit. I'm glad that Tristan Rose is going to play. And by the way, Pat Dammuz did confirm
to the local media after that. Tristan Rose is set to make his initial debut on Wednesday.
So he'll get to have his rookie lap and get to have his first game. And I'm really excited with
the way that he has dominated in Wilkesbury this year. Honestly, the way that he has played in
Wilkesbury since getting there, this has been a long time coming. And I'm really excited to see
if he can really take that next step and maybe even try to convince the staff.
to have him stay here for a good chunk of the season, you know,
just because he was that close to making the team out of training camp.
Line-wise, I like that Billy Coivinen is with him,
and it does look like Coivin is going to return from injury on Wednesday.
He was a full participant in practice.
You might see Muse label him as a game time decision after the morning skate on Wednesday,
but in my opinion, I think he is going to play.
I think he was fairly solid a practice today, but again, you know, it's just practice.
And then as for Tommy Novak on that line, I like it.
But he's got to get going.
You know, I think he's been a little disappointing.
You and I have talked about it.
And I came into this season really high on him just because I've seen his
impacts on other teams, good playmaker.
He has underrated release, at least before he getting to Pittsburgh.
But we haven't seen that yet as a penguin.
You've seen a couple of flashes, but not on a consistent basis.
So I really want him to get going because I think he can be a really solid contributor on that line.
So now it's another opportunity with Tristan Brose.
Eventually, I think you might see Ben Kindle get back down to the third line if Brian Russ is able to go.
He missed practice again today with an illness, though damn he was did confirm after practice that he expects them back on Wednesday.
So assuming Rust is back, he gets back on the top line, I think they're going to move Kindle back down to the third line, which maybe could move one of those wingers off.
Or Pat, you know, maybe Russ, or maybe they still have Kindle on the top line and maybe Russ replaces, you know, Yonokopin in the lineup, something like that.
just because Rust has not been that good lately.
They have a whole bunch of different combinations that they could try.
But at least for the third line I saw in practice,
color me very intrigued to say the least.
You and me both.
And I want to say this about Tommy Novak.
He kind of embodies Dan Mews's comments from after the Seattle Crackin game.
Because I'm with you in that I look at the way he plays.
I look at the under the hood numbers, and I see a player who is driving offense.
I see a player who is doing well with the process and all of that.
But it has got to eventually lead to something because good as he has been.
It's hard to say good because the points in the production have not been there.
He's not a drag on possession.
He's not bad defensively.
It's just eventually this process has to lead to outcomes.
He eventually has to start putting the puck in the net,
or he has to start setting goals up or something like that.
Because, again, we talked about this on Monday.
The team very clearly has a want and a belief in an expectation of being competitive,
if not qualifying for the 26th Stanley Cup playoffs.
So if they want to do this,
Novak is a player who is embodying those comments.
The process is there.
He's not playing poorly,
but he is ever so dangerously walking towards that line a cardio merchant.
Because you're playing well,
you're eating minutes,
but you're not really doing anything.
So that's got to change.
And then to what else you were saying,
this is what we wanted to see from Dan,
news going into this season mad scientist juggle those lines because here's the thing the eastern
conference is a massive log jam it is just you have one good week look at that you're near
the top of your division or at the very least in the top three you have a bad week all of a sudden
you're in the basement so they afforded themselves enough room that they can't have a prolonged
poor stretch, but a bad week, week and a half, start juggling things up, start finding things that
work. And here we go. Maybe we're going to find something this week. I agree. And you keep seeing
more players skating before practice. You know, Justin Brzoe keeps skating. Now, I think we're getting
close to the point where he's going to be returning in the next couple of weeks. If I had to guess,
Ricardo Rakel keeps skating before practice. But I still think his return is about a month away,
just because of the time frame. Once he comes back, though, that's a couple of
another top six option, even Nolachari, who you and I have talked about a lot on the show,
how we've been very underwhelmed by him, but in a fourth line role with Lazot and Dewar this
season, I think he's been at least competent, which I haven't been able to say a lot of times
during his tenure here.
You know, Connor Dewar is still playing top line minutes.
A little out of his depth, once he moves back down to the fourth line, the lineup is also
going to balance itself out a little bit more.
And we're going to discuss this coming up in the final segment.
You know, Rucker McGority, it's the time is coming when he is going to
to be up here in a top nine role whether he is playing on a top line with crosbie or maybe
on a third line with ben kindle and maybe billy coivenin maybe even tristan bros there there you go pat
how about another kid's line there pros with coivenin and regority if you want you can put kindle
with two of those three i think you can really have a true kids third line which would be a ton
of fun to watch so you're going to get more of this youth movement you're going to get more of these
regulars back you just got to be a little bit more patient and they just got to keep at least
treading water, but they need results this week, too.
Like, you talked about this on Monday, five out of six.
For me, you got to get at least four, but you can get five or six.
Obviously, that's the goal.
But at the end of the day, they got to just start banking points.
This is what makes me a true sicko when it comes to hockey.
I want that fourth line of Dewar, Lazot, and Achari back.
Because underratedly about them, I can't believe.
I didn't notice this in the last couple of years because you would think this would be right up my alley.
That line brought something that this team had been missing for quite a while, and it was just energy.
They were just an energy drink on skates.
Did they do a lot of really good things?
Not really.
They were fine defensively.
They weren't really producing offensively either, but they would go out and it was just 60 to 90 seconds of balls to the wall hockey.
They were throwing hits.
They were skating hard.
They were pepping the team up, and the penguins have kind of missed that the last couple of years.
They don't need a whole roster of it.
They don't need a bunch of dudes who just skate hard for a minute and a half and then get off the ice.
But to have a fourth line that plays hard is able to get you a little bit of offensive zone time.
So when your top six comes over the boards, they've got a bit of a tired unit to go up against.
that has its value and those guys were bringing it in the early weeks of the season and it made a difference.
So I want to see those guys get healthy and reunited because I really enjoyed that fourth line.
And I think the penguins are missing it.
But Hunter, I think at this point, our listeners are yelling into their headphones.
They're yelling at their screens.
They're yelling at their steering wheels because we have waited all episode.
And we're going to make you wait just a little bit.
bit longer because we got to talk about Tristan bros and Rucker McGority in the youth movement
for the Pittsburgh Penguins because that's what you came here for and we're going to talk
about it right after this.
But we got to tell you about today's second sponsor before we do that and it is game time.
Hockey season, it's officially here and nothing beats being in the arena for those opening
games, but let's be real, getting tickets can be a total.
headache these days. Between waiting and cues, surprise fees, and prices that jump right before
checkout, it's easy to get frustrated when all you want to do is take your seat inside
PPG paints arena and cheer on our penguins. That is where game time comes in. The app gives
fans the advantage, and it's your ultimate life hack for scoring amazing NHL tickets, fast,
easy, and stress-free. Been over it a bunch of times. Game times my go-to these days. I've used it for
Penn's games. I've used it for Pirates games. I used it to go see Sabrina Carpenter because I too
am short and sweet and I really enjoyed that show. Thank you very much for that one game time.
Love the fact that they got the upfront pricing and the view in the app from the seat. So both you know
what you're paying and what your view is going to be. You can't beat it. It's simply the best. So take

All right, we're back here on the Tuesday edition,
wrapping it up here on Locked-on Penguins. I'm Patrick
Damp right alongside Hunter Hodes. Let's get right into it.
Tristan Brose, man, how can you not smile right now?
How can you not smile when it comes to this kid's story?
It's not a very unique one.
It's nothing crazy about him making the NHL,
but the story of him and the way he has acted since he got called up is just amazing.
Starting with, he's on the bus with Wilkes Bear coming back from Providence, Rhode Island,
sitting around a table with his teammates on the bus playing some cards.
the old iPhone rings
and he ignores it
because I'm playing cards man
you've ever been on the bus
but can't interrupt the card game
can't be on the phone
but then he goes
that looks like Jason Spetsa calls me
and called me and Owen Pickering goes
dude call him back
it was really so funny
because like if you look at the old quote
he even says yeah I was playing cards
I missed Spets his call
and then Pat he texted him back
something like
can i call you back in 10 minutes and then bro shows owen picturing that text and pickering was literally
like what the hell are you doing go calling back you're not gonna call him back in 10 minutes he's like
do it now imagine timing your a gm just hey man sorry a little busy uh can i call you back i'm on the
bus literally and then he goes in the bathroom calls him and then he kind of said something like
you know that mean pat i fell to my knees and like walmart and stuff but he basically said like
I fell to my knees in the bathroom just because he was so elated.
So again, this is such a dream come true.
It's such a well-deserved call-up, as I've said, multiple times over the last couple of days.
And I am really stoked for his debut.
I'm going to say the same thing about Avery Hayes once he gets called up because he's also
been playing well when he's been healthy.
But, you know, this is about Tristan Bros.
And I think he can offer this team quite a bit in the offensive zone.
He's also a very smart player in all three zones, too.
that is an amazing story and again really excited for his debut and it looks like he's going to have two
very sound line mates but again still want more from Novak but they're putting him in a third
line role right away it looks like and more on what he he did when he got called up as soon as
he meets with the media after practice before he fields even a single question he said
before we get started I would just like to thank a couple of people and he just goes
through family, friends, former coaches and teammates, just to thank them to say,
hey, I finally made it.
And then he gets kind of asked about not making the team out of camp because he had a
really strong prospects challenge, had a really strong preseason and training camp.
And it looked like he was on a glide path to make the team.
And this quote really stood out to me from him.
He says, I thought I had a really good camp and put myself in a really good
position to make it. It didn't go my way. That's how life works sometimes. You can't just
quit. So I kept playing hockey and doing the thing I love and kept working really hard at
everything. I don't want to anoint this kid. I don't want to put undue expectation on him,
but that is the kind of perspective that I think really helps this organization. It's such a great
mentality also. Like, yeah, it sucks. I didn't make it. But you know what I'm going to do? I'm going to go
down to Wilkesbury, keep working on my game, crush it down there, and eventually I'm going
to get called up. And that is exactly what happened. He didn't sulk about it, didn't cry about
it. He just said, hey, I got that close. I know I'm going to get there. I just got to put in
a little bit more work. And he did exactly that. Just that type of mentality is so awesome to me,
man. It's great. It's great. And to kind of make everything full circle, it always, I'm always going
a victory lap myself for saying about the anti-tanking stuff. That is part of the
penguin's culture that has been set by the big three for the last 20 years. We can complain
about them not being the biggest personalities or not being the most fun, but these guys are so
dedicated to their craft. They're so dedicated to winning. And that trickles down throughout the
organization. You either have that mentality or you're close to that mentality and you're going to
push towards making the franchise better or you're not going to be there very long and we have
seen a lot of players who have come and gone in the last 20 years who didn't fit that mold
and it may have sucked to lose a couple of them but when you saw that they didn't fit in
with the culture it made sense so having a player like that a prospect like that who has that
mentality is nothing but a net positive now the challenge is on him to perform
The mentality is there, the work ethics there, but now this is no longer, this is no longer the
HL.
This is no longer developmental.
You are coming on to a team that has been on a bit of a slide lately that just had their
head coach call them out.
So he doesn't have to light the world on fire in his first game, but he's got to play hard.
He's got to play well.
Right.
And for a team that really needs some depth scorning and just some better forwards in their
lineup overall,
this is the perfect time for it.
They've lost seven of nine this month after starting out eight two and two.
The head coach is not pleased.
And over the last couple of days,
it feels like he's, his voice is kind of wearing out just with how much he has screamed
on the ice.
So I'm excited and just real quick pat about Rock and McGority,
that goal that he scored this week and his second goal,
just a thing of beauty short-handed.
That was the game-winning goal.
His skating looks even better this year than it did at the end of last year.
and that's scary because I thought he was looking like a much better skater
at the end of last season compared to what we saw at the beginning of the season
during his first day now only in two games looks like he's worked on it even more
the way that he knifed around that Providence Bruins defender short-handed
cutting to the middle right around him was awesome and then
little dig that he pulled in front of the net was great it's not going to be long
until he's up here they're still going to give him a runway if I had to say
10-15ish games but he will be up here
before the end of the season.
I am just going to echo and endorse what our old pal Jesse Marshall said.
Whenever he's ready, whenever it is, staple him to Sidney Crosby's line and let him cook,
especially if that skating has improved the way we think it has.
One last thing I just want to mention before we close the show.
If you're going to tomorrow's game against the Sabres,
you're going to have one more championship team to cheer for.
because your U.S.L champion Pittsburgh Riverhounds will be in the house.
Give them one hell of a welcome winning their first title in franchise history.
Congratulations to them and show them how bird proud we can be here in the 412.
But that is going to do it for the Tuesday edition of Locked-on Penguins.
Remember our programming note, we will have a preview episode out for you.
tomorrow afternoon to get you ready for penguins and sabers.
And then right after the game ends, Hunter and I are going to fire up the microphones and
the cameras recap that game.
So you'll have some content on Thanksgiving to listen to when you duck into the kitchen
to make your Thanksgiving dinner.
We'll be right there for you.
But for now, for Hunter Hodes, I am Patrick Damp.
Thank you as always for tuning in.
And we will be back on Wednesday.
