Tommy Novak played in all 82 games this season after only playing about two after he was acquired by the Pittsburgh Penguins.
But evaluating him, it's a bit of a challenge.
We're going to attempt to do that on a brand new locked on penguins.
You're locked on penguins, your daily podcast on the Pittsburgh Penguins, part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day.
Welcome to the Monday edition of the Locked on Penguins podcast.
I am one of your hosts, Patrick Damp.
You can follow me across all social media platforms at Synonym 4Wet,
joined by my pal, the one and only Hunter Hodes.
You can follow him on Twitter at Hunter Hodes.
The Wheeling Nailers have a two to nothing series lead in the North Division
finals in the ECHL, and in the AHL first round pick,
Bill Zonan is set to make his debut in the Atlantic Division finals.
But before we get to all of that, today we begin our off-season season in review series.
This year, we're switching it up just a little bit because if you're watching us on YouTube,
you can see the rundown and you see who we're getting to today.
But instead of going by production, importance, we're going to go by games played.
and the only penguin to skate in all 82 games this year was forward Tommy Novak.
So we begin offseason season and reviews with Hunter's boy.
So let's get into it.
82 games, 16 goals, 26 assists for 42 points in the regular season,
two assists in six playoff games.
And while you can't say that Tommy Novak had a bad season by any stretch of the imagination,
The way I look at Tommy Novak Hunter is he almost makes you feel like you want just a little bit more out of him.
Yeah.
And first off, I do want to say this is a victory Monday, at least for me, Arsenal 1 on Sunday.
They are two games away from winning their first Premier League title in over two decades.
So a lot of fun on Sunday, very controversial at the end.
But we don't have to get into that today on this show because this is a hockey league.
show. But yes, when it comes to Tommy Novak, I understand that he frustrated a lot of the fans
this year just because he was inconsistent at times. He'd go several games in a row without
getting a goal and assist. But then he'd go on some nice streaks where it's like, okay, you see
what he's doing. You see that he's putting together several good games in a row. But I feel like
that's kind of what happens league-wide when you see a middle-six top-time player.
These players are streaky, and it happens.
And overall, just counting stats-wise, I think this was fairly solid for Novak.
16 goals and 42 points in 82 games, basically a half-point-per-game player.
I predicted him to score 20 goals this season, only was four-off on that.
So I'll still take it.
I was on the right track.
I just didn't get to 20 like I thought he was going to get to.
but a good quality that he did have, at least at times the season,
he did score some big goals.
For example, the goal against Boston and overtime when the Penguins were down
three nothing in that game, the way they were able to roar back in the final 25 or so minutes
before Novak scored that goal to win it.
That was huge.
He had a big goal in Utah earlier this season, too, when the Penguins were down by multiple goals.
He was able to help him get back into it.
The New Jersey game, where they clinched the playoff spot,
he scored a really nice goal to make it to one the dependens ended up winning five to two so it won't
go down as the game winner but it still gave them the lead making it to one in the second period i know
he only had a couple of points in the first round series against the flyers he was definitely disappointing
but i do want to stress that again he did score some pretty big goals for this team throughout the
season so you have that you look at some of the underlines for this season played a little over a thousand
minutes of five on five ice time. When he was on the ice, the penguins had just about 51% of
the shot attempts, plus six at five on five goals for also 54% of scoring chances, 56% of the
high danger chances, and then 59.5% of the high danger goals for. So when he was on the ice,
he was helping drive offense, even when it was inconsistent, even when he would disappear
at times. But to me, Pat, I'll give him a solid, you know, letter grade-wise.
B plus for this season.
Some people may think that's a bit out to lunch.
If you want to say a solid B, that's fine.
If you want to go a little lower than that,
I'll hear arguments for that too.
But for the most part, when he was on,
he was fairly solid.
Now, it's still to be determined
if they're going to keep him for the entire next season.
He's still under contract for one more year.
He could also be used as trade bait potentially this summer.
But overall, you look at it,
Half point per game, solid underlines, scored in big moments, at least during the regular season.
I know it wasn't during the playoffs.
I'll give him a solid B plus for this season.
I don't think it was an A.
I think that would be too much.
If you want to say again, a solid B minus, I'll hear arguments for that as well.
But for me, I'm going to give him a B plus for this season.
I'm going to go lower.
I'm giving him a C because I've said it on the show before.
I look at Tommy Novak's game and I can see it in there.
And like I said in the first toss, he just leaves you wanting more.
I mean, 16 goals, 42 points.
I'm not going to get mad at that.
I'm not going to pretend like that is an underperformance.
It's the third most points he's ever put up in his career.
It was the third most goals he's put up in his career.
So in no world did he have a poor season.
but you look at where he was in the lineup.
You look at the players he was often paired with,
especially guys like of Genie Malkin, Igor Chinikov,
and you want to see a little bit more production.
Now, again, it's the inconsistencies that I'm giving him a C for.
I don't think he played poorly.
I don't think he was a liability or anything like that.
I don't want this to come off as I'm torching him
or saying they need to get rid of him.
He was perfectly fine.
but you look at you you predicted him to get 20 goals when you give that prediction a little bit more
context and again you look at the players who was often paired with 20 goals should have been
gone from a prediction or a hot take to an expectation because if you're going to be in the top
six consistently for the majority of the year and you play all 82 i would like to see you get a little bit
more. But the thing that keeps me from really saying he had a quote, unquote, disappointing season is he's a
very versatile forward on a very affordable contract. It's $3.5 million. Next season is the last year of it.
He can be on your second power play unit. He can be on your penalty kill unit. He can switch
from center to wing. So this is a player that it's just like the rundown says. It's a curious.
case because there are plenty of positives, but there are also negatives about him.
So he's a very difficult player for me to evaluate.
I like his game a lot.
And I think next year between being in the final year of his contract, going into being
a UFA, and next year near the end of the season, maybe even after the end of the season,
depending upon how the schedule shakes out, he's going to be 30.
So there's a bit of a fork in the road for him here is, does he have a breakout year, earn himself a little bit of extra money, become part of the penguin's future?
Or are they going to look at him and go, thanks for the help, go get paid elsewhere.
That or again, they could potentially use him as trade bait in a deal this summer.
I will say he did have great chemistry with Afghani Malkin throughout the year, same with Igor Chinochinov.
I understand what you're saying when it comes to an expectation for 20 goals, but you have to remember he is more.
of a playmaker first. He still has an underrated release and you saw him use it throughout the
season. But at his, at his core, he's more of a playmaker. He's good, dishing the puck. He has really
good vision, at least when he's on. That's really his bread and butter to me. And I will push back
a little bit on the penalty kill, Pat, because he really has not played on the penalty kill at all
throughout his career. Only this season that he played 34 seconds on the penalty kill. The most he has
played on the PK in the season is a minute 33 seconds. And that came with Nashville back during the
3-24 season. He has not played very much on the PK, but you were on the right track in terms of
being a jack-of-all-trades player, can play center, can play wing, can play second line,
your third line, can play in your second power play unit, and he was on that unit this year.
It just doesn't play a lot. They only kill wise.
So I understand why you're giving him a C, especially due to some inconsistencies.
If other fans want to give him that grade, I totally understand.
If you, again, you want to give him a B-minus, a solid B, that's fair too.
guess I just gave him a B plus because I looked at his overall body of work.
I saw the production, the underlines, the big moments where he did show up, even though
there were others where he didn't like the playoffs.
And that's kind of where I got to my overall letter grade for him this season.
Time will tell if he is on the team for next season.
If he is and they do bring Evgeny Malkin back, I would expect those two to play on the
same line again next season because those two did have a lot of fun playing with one another.
I think of getting him all can even talk about it last off season where he wanted to play with
Tommy Novak he got his wish for a good chunk of this season time will tell if both players
return for next season.
So there's our first season in review.
Let us know if you guys, let us know if you all think we're out to lunch for our letter
grades for that.
I definitely am because I don't know why I said penalty kill.
I think mainly it's because I've never looked at him as a defensive liability because
he's not.
Maybe there is something there next season to put him on the.
P-K, but we will see. Either way, I give them a C. Let us know what you think about Tommy Novak in his
season and review. This also means our season and reviews aren't going to be any surprises.
You can go right to the Penguins website, sort it by games played, and you know who's coming up.
And if you do go look, our next one is going to be Anthony Mantha. So I'm sure we will have
quite a few things to say about Anthony Mantha. But that is going to do it.
For this opening segment, when we come back, we're checking back in on the farm.
This time, the ECHL where the Wheeling mailers have a 2-0 lead in the North Division final.
We will break down that when we come back right after this.

Wheeling Naylars will look to take a stranglehold on their North Division final series
against the main Mariners tonight in Portland.
Thanks to a 4-3 overtime win in game one and then a 4-1 win over the Mariners in game
two over the weekend.
The nailers are in prime position to advance to the Eastern Conference final.
And as expected, Hunter, a lot of that is thanks to a guy we have talked about quite a few times on this podcast.
Goaltender, Taylor Godier, who is once again having himself a hell of a series.
He's been unbelievable once again.
I know water is wet.
Taylor Goetier continues to light up the ECHL playoffs.
Pat, he is 6.0 in these playoffs, a 1.04 goals against average in a 963.
Sabres. She is making a mockery of the ECHL playoffs right now.
And Little Birdie told me that Kyle Dubas was in the building over the weekend,
getting to see Taylor Godier. So maybe he's looking to see, okay, maybe he is fully ready.
He is ready, by the way, to go to Wilkesbury for next season. That is the obvious step up for him.
I think he's done literally everything that he has needed to do in Wheeling and with Sergei Moroshoff continuing to,
light it up in Wilkesbury, it just makes the most sense for Gaudi to go to Wilkesbury
to be at least the 1B next year, potentially behind you,
Oblomq is because you and I, and I think the entire fan base expects Sergei
Miroshov to be the 1B slash backup goaltender to probably Artis Sheelovs for next season
on the main squad, because that's obviously the next step in his development as well.
But Gaudier is just making it look so easy with the saves that he is making, Pat.
He has been fantastic.
Another player, Pat, who has also been very good, is Matthew Corseo, three goals,
eight points and seven games.
Logan Patilla has also been good with a goal in six points.
Blake Bennett, Ryan McAllister, Zach Erdahl.
They've also been fairly solid throughout these two series, too.
So willing, they did what they needed to do, going out to a two-nothing series lead.
Now can they take the next step, put a strangle hold on Maine,
and get even closer to potentially going to the Eastern Conference final?
This team has been good, man.
And it's awesome when both of the minor league clubs are in really good positions to potentially get to the conference final.
Wilkesbury, you know, they are the favorite going into the Atlantic Division final Springfield.
They're a scrappy team.
They've beaten two teams as underdogs.
But going into the series, they are again the underdog to Wilkesbury.
And I think Wilkesbury, they do have the better team.
It's all going to come down to Cam May win another best of five series.
to get to the Eastern Conference final.
But both teams, Pat, as I said,
in pretty good position here
to potentially make really deep runs
in their respective playoffs.
For sure.
And we'll get to Wilkes-Bair in the final segment
because, as I said in the open,
Bill Zonan,
Kirk McDonald might have let it slip a little more
than he wanted to that he might end up playing in this series.
But again, we'll get to that in a minute.
The thing that I have noticed,
keeping an eye on the Wheeling series,
is they're getting contributions up and down
the lineup for the most part.
But the thing that is really driving them is the guys who drove them through the regular
season.
All those players that you named who were big parts of games one and two were big parts
of the nailers success throughout the regular season.
And it is obvious and as quote unquote hot take as it might sound, your best
player's got to be your best players at this time of year.
and all of these guys on Wheeling are stepping up in this playoff run thus far.
Now, the thing we know about the ECHL,
and the same goes obviously for the AHL,
because much different than the NHO,
you don't have the charter jets,
you don't have the TV contracts.
So you're playing games in a real condensed way.
This was a Friday-Sunday thing, I believe, in Wheeling,
and now it's going to be a Monday- Tuesday thing.
Friday Saturday for Friday Saturday. And then this time up in Maine, they're playing tonight for game three.
And then they're playing once again on Tuesday for game four. So this is, and here's the other thing.
In the ECHL, it's not like the NHL where it's 2-2-1-1. It's 232.
Yep. So if the nailers can win the next two,
they'll get some much needed rest.
But if they split or lose both of them,
they're playing a third game in a row on Wednesday in Maine.
So there is a chance that they could play three straight games
before coming back to Wheeling on Saturday.
So sounds pretty obvious to say.
Sounds pretty, you know, no crap Sherlock, as they say in other words.
but getting both of these games is going to be crucial for the nailers
because then if you look at the way the schedule is condensed,
some momentum could shift back to Maine if they don't.
Yeah, I mean, hell Pat, even just winning one of these games is,
that's the bare minimum, I think.
You're guaranteed, you would be guaranteed to go up three to,
heading back to wheeling with a chance to close out the series.
So one, that's the bare minimum.
You just can't lose all three.
be a disaster, even though you still only be down 3-2, going back home. Obviously, winning two
out of three, that wins you the series right then and there in Maine. But sooner or rather than later,
you want to get these series done as quickly as possible, Pat, because this format, it's designed
to be very, very quick. Oh, the series is over. Oh, you move on to the next one. Oh, you move on
the next one. So especially in this type of league, rest can be pretty paramount. So if you can close out a team
like Maine here pretty quickly, you'll be able to get some of your guys some rest before your next
series in the conference final. You know, it's not like right now where you have Carolina and the
NHL Pat where, you know, they're probably going to have two weeks off. It's not going to be like
that here with Wheeling. But the more rest days that you can have, the better I think they'll be
going forward. So we'll see if they can close this team out pretty quickly here. This will be huge
for the nailers. And as I continue to beat the drum, the more meaningful hockey this organization
plays in the HL, in the ECHL is only better for the development of a lot of these players,
because we know the position that this organization is in, especially with the way this
season went and the way some of the future is looking. That top three, top five draft
pick is not likely to come around anytime soon unless they trade for it.
So having some of these B and C level prospects playing high level, high leverage, high stakes hockey throughout the spring will only help them become potential contributors at the NHL level.
So Nailers and Mariners, game three is tonight in Maine at 7 o'clock.
Game 4 is Tuesday at 7 o'clock.
Game 5 if necessary, Wednesday at 7 o'clock.
And should the series shift back to Wheeling, 710 on Saturday and game 7 if necessary, 710 next Monday in Wheeling?
We're obviously going to be keeping an eye on that series.
And we're also keeping an eye on the baby penguins.
And first round pick, Bill Zonan, he could be making his AHA debut sooner rather than.
then later Hunter and I will touch on that and get you set for the series when we come back
right after this. But we've got one more sponsor to get to and it's our pals at Indeed.

One more time, Indeed.com slash podcast. Terms and conditions apply. Need to hire. It's a job for
indeed sponsored jobs. We're closing out the Monday edition of Locked on Penguins. I'm Patrick
Damp here alongside Hunter Hodes. And as we discussed last week, first round pick, Bill Zonan signed
an amateur tryout agreement or option or whatever you want to call it.
They change the name seemingly every five minutes,
but ATO at the end of the day with the Wilkesbury Scranton Penguins,
and head coach Kirk McDonald's may have let it slip when asked if Zonan would be an option
for the baby penguins during this series.
And he said at some point,
he could make his debut in the Atlantic Division Final against Springfield Hunter.
let's keep it real simple on this one.
What does Bill Zonan need to bring to the table?
What does he need to do if he makes his debut with the baby penguins?
It's going to sound very cliche,
but just keep doing what he's been doing throughout the season
after coming back from injury.
And that's being a solid playmaker.
He's also been an underrated goal score.
He has used his speed to his advantage.
And I think the most underrated aspect of his game to me
is this net front play.
He is awesome in front of the net.
net and I want to see him bring that element to his game for Wilkesbury as well.
So all those qualities, especially the net friend play, which I do find very underrated.
That's where I want to see on display in this series against Springfield.
This comes from Tony and Dracutus, who he covers Wilkesbury for Inside H.L.
Hawke does an amazing job.
I wanted to shout him out like I shouted out, Samantha for Wheeling last week because
she does a great job covering the nailers.
Tony, he does the same for Wilkesbury.
He is on top of all this, spoke to Kirk McDonald about it,
and it very much does sound like Bill's on and will be making his
HL debut for Wilkesbury in this series.
Curious to see who he comes in for just because that team has been jelling
throughout the year.
They were great, obviously, in that series against Hershey.
So who will he come in for?
Very curious.
Also, who will his linemates be?
Also curious about that.
But this should excite everyone in the family.
base. A bit of a slow start due to injury, but when he came back, was over point per game,
was very good for the Armada in the playoffs, in the queue. Now he's coming over here. His junior
career is over. How does he adjust to the AHL is going to be very fascinating? Because he's
going to have at least one full season down to the AHL, probably next season. I don't think he's
going to make the main NHL team out of training camp. I say that now, like I said about Ben
Kendall, and then he might just make the team. But that's just my prediction.
I think he's going to need at least one year in the HL before he comes up to the Penguins full time.
But I am stoked to see him come in the lineup.
I really am.
I am too.
I still hold my position that I look at him as a bit more of a project than most of the Penguins prospects right now.
I think it's going to take him a couple of years to adapt to just the size and the speed of the pro game.
But at the end of the day, the things that he does really work at whatever level you
want to go to. It's a lot of straightforward speed. It's a lot of physicality. It's a lot of fearlessness.
It's just learning when to apply those traits at the professional level. So getting this opportunity
for him deep in a playoff run with the baby penguins will really help him in the long term.
And the thing that I always come back to is it helps a player like him. It helped a player like
Harris and Brunick where there is no shallow end of the pool, so to speak. They're not just
dipping a toe in and seeing what it's all about. Brunich got playoff action in his first action
with the AHL level. Now Zonan's going to get that. And we saw, even though as impressive as
Brunick has been in the last two training camps, you could see that he leaned on it a little bit
and was able to be a little bit further ahead than most thought,
though he wasn't quite ready.
I could be the same track for Zanan.
Again, still have him as a bit of a project,
still look at him as someone who's going to take a little bit of time
to really get used to the speed of the pro game.
But no better way for him to learn how it's played
than being in the playoff run.
Now, let's talk a little bit about the series to close out the show here.
You brought this up in the second segment.
Springfield has been surprising everyone.
They should not be here.
They're still a solid team.
They're an organization that has some okay prospects,
but nobody expected Springfield to get this far.
For Wilkes Bear,
they can not underestimate them,
or this potential deep run to a Calder Cup for Wilkes Bear
is going to come to an end.
Right.
And you look at the standings even during the regular season.
Pat, they finished sixth.
Vine Providence, Wilkesbury, Charlotte, Bridgeport, and Hershey.
They were only ahead of Lehigh Valley and Hartford, both of those teams who were not very good.
Springfield said, okay, we're going to go into this with House Money.
They take out Charlotte in the first round.
They then play Providence, who, by the way, Providence won 54 games this season.
They were a huge favorite going into that series.
I think everyone was probably expecting a showdown between Wilkesbury and Providence,
just considering where those two teams finished, top two in the division.
Springfield said, nope, we are.
got other plans. They took them out, not even in five games. It only took four games in that best
of five series for Springfield to win it. And they've already upset two teams. And now they're going
to try to do it a third time against a Wilkesbury team that obviously just beat Hershey in four
games. It's a Springfield team that's well coached. They're playing with even more house money
now. And they've been scrappy during these playoffs series during the regular season. This is not
going to be an easy series at all for Wilkesbury.
But I think if the big guns show up for them, if Sergey Murshaw keeps doing his thing,
I do think Wilkesbury is going to do enough to advance to the Eastern Conference final
where they would play the winner of the North Division final, which is Cleveland and Toronto.
So curious to see how that series goes.
So if you want to pay attention to see who Wilkesbury could maybe play, that's a series
to take a look at because we are now to eight teams left, all division finals.
before we get into the best of sevens,
because that's when the best of seven kicks in bat.
Eastern Conference Final, Western Commerce Final,
and then the Colorado Cup final,
that's also the best of seven.
Interesting format.
It's unlike some of the other leagues that you see,
but that's what makes it different,
but also kind of cool at the same time.
So we'll see.
This will be another big series to win for Wilkesbury,
gets these players,
more experience for high-stakes games,
you go deeper in the playoffs,
so all that good stuff.
Once again, you beat me to it, as you often do.
It is another best of five for Wilkes-Bair.
It starts tomorrow night at 705 in Wilkesbury for game one.
Game two, same thing on Thursday, 705 in Wilkes-Bare.
Then next Tuesday and Thursday, the series would shift to Springfield at 705 both nights.
And if necessary, game five next Saturday at 605 in Wilkes-Bair, just like we are with the
wheeling nailers.
We're keeping an eye on that series and we'll keep you up to date on it throughout and keeping an eye on the penguins prospects.
One last note before we finish today's show.
Our Tuesday show will be a bit later than usual because Kyle Dubas is doing his end-of-season media availability.
So we're going to watch that, take our notes, and we will react to it on a brand new episode of Locked-on Penguins on Tuesday.
But for now, for Hunter Hodes, I am Patrick Damp.
Thank you, as always, for tuning in.
And we will talk to you once again on Tuesday.
