Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins - Penguins SWEEP weekend back-to-back in chaotic fashion!

Episode Date: January 5, 2026

The Penguins' winning streak is now at five games thanks to an incredible comeback against the Blue Jackets! Hunter and Patrick begin the show with the first victory of the weekend, an absolute defens...ive masterclass against the Detroit Red Wings (1:30). They look at the team’s whole body of work defensively, how Yegor Chinakhov scored his first goal as a Penguin (6:00), and so much more. Then, with their backs to the wall, the Penguins were able to erase a 4-1 deficit and turn it into a 5-4 overtime win against Columbus (11:40). The captain had another brilliant performance, and so did the fourth line. Finally, the Penguins get a few days off after a rough stretch of games, but some big games loom this week. Starting point is 00:01:05 Sports. First off, congratulations to the Pittsburgh Steelers for clinching the AFC North in that crazy wild affair against the Baltimore Ravens. But Pat, we also got a pretty damn good hockey team right now in the city of Pittsburgh. The Penguins have now won five in a row. We will get to that crazy comeback against Columbus a bit later on the show. We will start with that historic. win in Detroit because the Penguins, Pat, they made history in this win here. They play, they have played over 2,000 road games in the history of this franchise. They did something that they had never done on Saturday. They held a team to only 12 shots.
Starting point is 00:01:46 It was a defensive clinic from the Penguins all game long, especially in the third period. That is the best I have seen them defend a lead all season long. The Red Wings couldn't even complete two passes in a row. row because of how stingy the penguins were being in all three zones, especially in their own zone. You can see how frustrated the Red Wings players were getting, slamming their sticks, slamming the door when they were getting to the bench. It reminded me so much of the 2016 Penguins when they would have a lead in the third period. They would completely shut the door, textbook suffocation. That was just the perfect third period under Dan Mus. I loved every single bit of it.
Starting point is 00:02:27 We're going to get to a couple of the goals a bit later. But Pat, we have to start there with the third period and the way they play defensively because it was an absolute clinic. I'm genuine. Like I'm buzzing today, like just buzzing after this weekend for Pittsburgh sports. You got to enjoy it. It makes a Monday a little bit easier to swallow when your teams just come out victorious. But Saturday for the penguins might have been the,
Starting point is 00:02:57 best game I have seen them play in five or so years because was it the most exciting game? Not really. Was it the flashiest game? Not at all. But it was textbook, man. Detroit had nothing. They gave them nothing. And you nailed it. The third period, they just put Detroit in a sleeper hold and did not let them up. It was the most suffocating performance I've seen out of them in a very long time. And I know it's not Wednesday, but a leading candidate for me for this week's Warrior Helmet is going to be Dan Mews because the way this team has played since they got back from the Christmas break, it would have been really easy for them to spiral.
Starting point is 00:03:48 It would have been really easy for Dan Mews to throw everything in a blender, scratch guys, move the lines around, do something. something different in net, but he understood that when this team went through its losing stretch, they weren't playing particularly poorly. They were just making mistakes at the worst possible times. And he went, this is a good, this is maybe not a good team, but this is a team that can win games. This is a team that can hang. So we're not going to change a lot. We're going to make the adjustments on the margins. We're going to try to minimize the mistakes. And for the last five games, you have seen a team that we saw in October.
Starting point is 00:04:32 It's a team that is taking advantage of the opportunities they get, they're playing well defensively, and they're being responsible with the puck. All of that adds up to a team that is right in the mix. Right. And even during that eight game losing streak, they were flat out dominating some of these teams. I mean, you and I said it about San Jose before the inevitable happened. We also talked about it with the ducks loss, how they were crushing the ducks up
Starting point is 00:04:56 and down the ice until we all know what happened with 0.1 seconds left. I can keep going with some of these other losses, but they were playing really well, jumping out to these leads. They just didn't have the mental toughness. And every time that something bad would happen, it would snowball into something worse. Ever since the end of the 8 game, losing stream, honestly, ever since that Montreal game, this has been a different team. Yeah, I know.
Starting point is 00:05:18 They had a little bit of a dud in Toronto. I like the way they were playing offensively. Defensively, though, they still had to be so much better. And since then, also, Dam Euse has done a great job. But over the last five games, you know, six out of seven with wins, you know, this has been a completely different team. And now they're solidly in a playoff spot. And, you know, also for this game against Detroit, it's funny.
Starting point is 00:05:40 I had a lot of friends go to this game, including Jamie and Izzy, not Izzy Stravlin from Guns and Roses, but a couple of friends, including them, were there. They got to see history, which is pretty awesome. And they also got to see Igor Chinikov's first goal. and what a pass that was from Ben Kindle, by the way. That was absolutely sensational Chinokov makes no mistake firing that pass John Gibson.
Starting point is 00:06:03 Sidney Crosby, outrageous pass to Brian Rusk. It's a little bit of luck that past went off a Red Wings player stick, but still the vision from Crosby there was awesome. And then the way they were able to shut it down in the third period, they get empty net goals from Connor Dewar and Ricard Raquel. This is arguably their best game of the season. It's funny. We also just said that against about the Carolina game.
Starting point is 00:06:23 last week. So you can really take your pick. I think the three best games of the Penguin season are this game in Detroit, the Carolina game, and then the game in Philly they won five to one. You can also argue the Rangers game at the start of the season when they dominated them defensively. But I think these three pat, you can make a case for either one. But they destroy Detroit in this one. It was awesome. Oh, it was, it was a clinic. And the Chinikov goal, It was really cool to see him get his first as a penguin, especially out of the way early, because when you get, I know it's not the most high profile trade, but this is a guy with pedigree. This is a guy that you have high hopes for. I know he's not going to be a franchise altering player.
Starting point is 00:07:10 He's not going to be the guy you put the captaincy on or anything like that. But when you get a player like that, that you have really high hopes for that has that kind of potential, if it drags on for a little bit and he doesn't score, it becomes kind of a weight around his neck. But it was exactly what we were told in what we believed about Yeager Chinikov, was that this is a guy who has really high offensive upside. He's got a great shot. And loki has some good hockey IQ.
Starting point is 00:07:43 He noticed that the Red Wings were making a pretty lazy change. and Ben Kindle with an elite pass to find him, and then Chinikov with a no doubt finish, it was a really, really impressive goal top to bottom. Rust's goal, I mean, what else is left to say about Sidney Crosby? He just continues to do this. And they said it on the broadcast on Channel 4, ABC. ABC, yes. I blanked on that.
Starting point is 00:08:16 But it was either during. the game or it was during the intermission, Crosby continues to be the best guy at finding that cross-ice seam. And nobody else, maybe a couple other players are making that pass. But away from all of that, the thing that I really liked about the Detroit game was the same thing that I liked about the games you referenced. They never let their foot off the gas. They weren't selling out for offense. They weren't throwing caution to the wind, but they didn't go into a shell they didn't get a two one lead or hold a two one lead and say all right because that was kind of what killed them during that losing streak is they would get a lead and they would back
Starting point is 00:08:58 off they would go into a shell they would sell out for defense and as of late they've gone away from that and good because when you're playing an effective game just keep playing it just keep doing the things that are working and if your opponent breaks through sure you can adjust but you look at the way they beat Carolina. You look at the way they beat the Red Wings, especially in the second game. They just kept doing what was bringing them success in Detroit didn't have an answer.
Starting point is 00:09:29 I mean, the only goal that the Red Wings got in Saturday's game was off of a bad Rucker McGrory miss. Latang gets caught. And I'm not really blaming Chris Lattang too much for that one just because it was a really bad balance. And Alex DeBrinke is going to make you pay on that 9.9 out of 10 times. I mean, that was an absolute snipe from. him just with McGority there probably should not have taken that Sean i think if he was a bit more
Starting point is 00:09:52 patient there that would have been better but again i'm nitpicking from a outstanding performance the penguins were great in this game it honestly had the feeling where you could have played another third period and the red wings weren't scoring that that's just how good the penguins were defensively in this game so two big points there and they went into columbus looking for two more and they got it in pretty chaotic fashion pat and i were going to recap that Fantastic win against the Blue Jackets right after this. But before we get to that, we have to tell you all about our first sponsor,

Starting point is 00:11:21 the official sports betting partner of the NBA. All right, right here on this edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast. I'm one of your host, Hunter Hodes, joined by my host, Patrick Damp, and Pat. For a while, it felt like on Sunday this was not going to be the Penguins Day. I loved the way they started the first 10 minutes. They were blitzing Columbus, right off the ice. Villeak Covenant opens the scoring for the Penguins.
Starting point is 00:11:47 for him. His underlying numbers have been very good throughout the year. He just has not had his confidence. He sits out for a little bit, comes back in, and it's exactly what you want to see, has perhaps his best shift of the season getting his second goal of the year. Again, it's exactly what you want to see from a young player that's still trying to find his footing in the NHL. But from about the 10-minute mark of the first period, through the 10-minute mark of the second period, those 20 minutes, it was all blue jackets. They pushed back. really well. They get three goals to end the first period.
Starting point is 00:12:20 I don't think Archer Shilov's played particularly well. He was below water in terms of goals state above expected. I don't think Jackson-Ivney played well to end the first period either, Pat. His play on that third goal was especially not good to say at least. And I do think Archer Shilov still should have made that save. Blue Jackets make it for one early in the second. And at that time, you and I were texting was like, well, felt like a scheduled loss. But those final 30 minutes, it was all pay.
Starting point is 00:12:47 penguins. They pushed and pushed until they eventually tied it with less than 14 seconds to go in the third. But the main catalyst for this comeback late in the second, that fourth line. The fourth line continues to play so freaking well for this team. Say it with me, everyone. Connor Dewar is the straw that stirs the drink on that line. Great keep of the blue line getting it to Noachari, who made no mistake. I continue to be blown away at the level that Nola Chari has played at this season. It is night and day compared to his first couple of seasons
Starting point is 00:13:19 with the Penguins. I thought LaSotte also played well, but again, Achari gets them right back in it. Early on in the third, Tommy Novak, absolute piss missile to make it four three. And then Pat,
Starting point is 00:13:30 the Penguins just kept coming. And Jet Greaves was doing everything in his power to give the jacket the two points. It wasn't enough. Ricardo Raquel ties the game with less than 14 seconds. And it felt like the Penguins
Starting point is 00:13:42 top players out there for five minutes for the six on, And then who else but Cindy Crosby? He owns the Blue Jackets franchise. He ends it with the overtime winner. Outstanding celebration from him and Eric Carlson. Carlson, you know, he just basically jumps into Crosby's arms. Just this comeback was everything, man.
Starting point is 00:14:02 The heart that these guys showed, the tenacity, the effort, the guts that they showed, it was all there. And I will shout out, she loves for some big saves down the stretch in the third. I don't think he played very well. in this game again and I picked a little bit in the first period but there was a couple minutes stretch late in the third when the penguins were still pushing if the jackets pushed back at least a little bit and she also made a couple of really big saves to keep the penguins in that one so I will shout him out for that but pat it's nice being on the other side of this after the penguins blew so many of these leads just a few weeks ago it was a really good feeling to see the penguins
Starting point is 00:14:40 be the team that plays spoiler this way it would and they deserve all the credit in the world for that effort on Sunday because as you said and as we were saying in text messages, when you look at the score and you look at the game as a whole by the point to the point where the jackets go up four to one, I wouldn't say that the penguins were playing particularly poorly. It just looked like a team that was playing its fifth game in eight days on the second half of a road back to back because things were just off. by a half an inch, a half a step. It wasn't as if the jackets came out and dominated them.
Starting point is 00:15:22 The jackets played well. I'm not going to take anything away from them. They did what they needed to do when they were up four to one. But it was just against the team that seemed a little off. And you felt like, all right, you know what? They took both from Detroit. They put themselves in a good position where if they lose this one, no harm, no foul. You don't love moral victories.
Starting point is 00:15:43 but at the end of the day, you can understand why. Then they just kept coming back. And they deserve so much credit for that. But I am going to push back on you about the fourth line. Because yes, they have been really good. Nolachari been very good. Dewar also been good. They deserve credit.
Starting point is 00:16:05 But it's Blake Lazot who runs that line. And I got to give a shout out to one of our biggest fans. One of my good friends, my buddy, Joe Radella. I was talking to him about this during the over the weekend about Blake Lazzat. And we both came to the conclusion that he is the key to that fourth line. And he sent me this, the Penguins record in games that Blake Lazzat plays, 18, 7, and 6. That's crazy. And I don't want to overstate his value.
Starting point is 00:16:41 He's not going to be the team MVP. he's not the best player on the on the team but he has made that bottom six legitimate he has made that bottom six worthwhile because he is just a responsible player he plays a very mature game he has all the energy in the world and when that line is on the ice they're not just getting caved in and eaten up minutes they're being productive they are playing extremely well And a lot of that is credit to Blake Lazzott. But overall, if you can say anything about the Pittsburgh Penguins, they are never, ever boring.
Starting point is 00:17:25 100%. And I loved that six on five. It was by far their best of the season, the way they were zipping the puck around. And also don't underestimate that keep by Eric Carlson at the blue line. It was fan-freaking-tastic. And speaking of Eric Carlson, he was on bath salts all game long.
Starting point is 00:17:45 I think that was his best game of the season, arguably his best game as a member of the Penguins. He was everywhere, especially in the offensive zone. There was one sequence where he put a move on a Jacket's Flair that basically put him into a blender pat and got a really good scoring chance out of it. They just had a nice deke in the offensive zone. But again, that keep for the six on five,
Starting point is 00:18:05 I think was perhaps the biggest reason. why the penguins were able to score there. And then Ricard Raquel gets the tying goal. And you and I have been wanting to see more out of him since coming back. Two games this weekend, back to back with goals. He was great this weekend. I thought Sidney Crosby getting the overtime winner just on a beautiful deke using that vintage backhand there, the best backhand in all of the NHL.
Starting point is 00:18:30 It was awesome. And I also want to shout out one person here. Josh gets off. You are awesome with your calls. we are spoiled and also very lucky that we have Josh Getsoff calling the games here on Sportsnet Pittsburgh. His goal calls for the Ricard Raquel goal and the Cindy Crosby goal were absolutely outstanding. Take a bowser. He's also one of the nicest people you could ever meet. So Josh, shout out to you two amazing calls there from him. Yeah, he read the moment.
Starting point is 00:19:02 And he he does a very good job in my estimation of knowing. when to talk and when to just let the game tell the story, and that is such a valuable trait for a play-by-play guy. So he has done a phenomenal job since taking over the duties and taken over the headset, hat tip to him. Last thing that I want to talk about, and it's not so much the Columbus game in general, it's just overall. I really don't know what to make of the penguins goal tending right now because yeah we're were there a couple goals this weekend and even against Columbus where you go ah save there would have been nice but then you look at the way the play developed and you go yeah you know at the same time I can see how a goal goes in there I don't
Starting point is 00:19:54 I know that we have said we want skinner or she loves to eventually have a moment and eventually grab a hold of the starting job and take it. And that still remains. But I look at the penguins goaltending right now, and I just go, these guys have some of the worst luck, because I don't think either of them are going to be the goalies of the future. We know that's going to be Sergei Murashov, but you look at the way the teams have played in front of them for the majority of the season,
Starting point is 00:20:26 and you're like, okay, I get that we want them to steal a game, but they also end up getting put in positions where you're like, no goalies stealing this game. So I'm still skeptical, obviously, on both Skinner and Sheelovs, but I look at the, especially the Columbus game, and I go, there was a screen, there was busted coverage, there was bad decisions with the puck, and yeah, goalies are allowed to make a save, but I look at their play and I go, it wasn't bad, wasn't good, but there were a lot of factors that went into it.
Starting point is 00:20:58 Sure, I do hear you on that. I think with Shewaws, I just want him to be a bit more consistent. That's the thing. Like, he was below water and goals state of above expected again on Sunday. I just want to see him be more consistent overall because down the stretch, he was good in the third one. Their jackets had a couple of nice shifts in a row, even when the penguins were still pushing.
Starting point is 00:21:16 He made a couple of big saves. That's all fine and dandy, but I still think he needs to be a little bit better earlier on in that game. I think ever since they formed this tandem, ever since the Jari train, I should say, I think Skinner has personally outplayed she loves a little bit. I think Skinner has been a bit of the better goalie. So time will tell if Dame Euse wants to run with him a little bit, but I still think he might stick to this rotation.
Starting point is 00:21:40 But I know a lot of people also want to see them bring up one of Marishaw or Blumquist. Let them keep marinating. They're both playing really well in Wilkesbury. You don't need to rush either of these two boys. Because I will say, Pat Blumquist has also been really good down on Wilkesbury. And you can certainly make an argument that he very much deserves a call up as well. But let them both keep marinating down there. I know Murshov had a really bad start this weekend.
Starting point is 00:22:04 He's going to bounce back from it. He's going to be totally fine. But they're going to stick with this tandem here at the initial level for quite a bit, at least this season, I should say. And also, last thought on both these games, Penguins, believe it or not bad, they held the Red Wings to no high danger chances at five on five in the final two periods of Saturday's game. And again, on Sunday, just the way the penguins were able to come back,
Starting point is 00:22:28 show that heart, show that effort, that never give up mentality was simply awesome. And they're closing on and getting to the top of the Metropolitan Division, which I can't believe I'm saying after that eight game losing streak. But this team fights, man, they really do. They've stuck with it. That's now five in a row and they have a few days off heading into Thursday's game against the New Jersey Devils. And speaking of that, Pat and I are going to look at the week ahead coming up right after this.
Starting point is 00:22:58 All right, we're back here on this episode of the Locked-on Penguins podcast. I'm one of your host on Trojordes. That's my good friend, Ann Coast, Patrick Damp and Pat. A few games lined up for the Penguins this week. They will play three times. Again, a sequence where it is three games in four nights. They are off today, Tuesday, and Wednesday before on Thursday. They will host the New Jersey Devils,
Starting point is 00:23:23 the only Metropolitan Division team the Penguins have yet to beat this year. penguins seven and one and three against the metro this year they were nine and 13 and four against the metro last year so they have almost equal the amount of metro wins and we're only halfway through the season they're two away from equalling it from last season the play against the divisional teams has been miles better compared to last season but they will get another crack at the devils on thursday at home they will then play the calgary flames on Saturday at 3.30, and then they will go up to Boston to TD Garden to take on a Bruins team that is flat out weird. They're a little bit better than expected, but I still don't think they're
Starting point is 00:24:04 that good overall. This is a pretty big week once again for the Penguins. You have another divisional game here where you want to try and take two clean points. You have a flame scheme where they're weird. I still think they're going to be sellers at the deadline personally. And then a Bruins team that they have David Posternock. He is simply outstanding. Jeremy Swayman has been better, but I still look this team up and down and I still don't think they're that good. So there's definitely some good opportunities for the Penguins to keep stacking some points here this week, which again, they need to, especially with how tight the standings are. The play in the division this year is so important because you look at how tight the Eastern
Starting point is 00:24:40 conference standings are. And being that we're pretty much right at the halfway mark for just about every team in the league tells us that that's not going to change. It doesn't look like there's going to be a team that wants to go on a run and really grab a hold of this thing. So at the end of the day, you have to keep getting wins in the division. So if it does come down to tiebreakers in April, you have that in your back pocket. And I'll say this, you know, we're obviously going to do a full preview of the game on Thursday, but their last meeting against the Devils, I thought they played really well.
Starting point is 00:25:16 And they were felled by the same thing. They have been felt by all season long, a shootout. So they played the devils way better than they have in recent past. So that is an opportunity right in front you. Calgary's not very good. That's a team you should beat. In Boston is kind of the embodiment of the entire Eastern Conference at this point. They have had stretches where you go, holy crap, Boston might actually be good.
Starting point is 00:25:43 And then you have stretches where you go, actually, never mind, this team kind of stinks. And then you have stretches where you go, I have no idea what this team is. So Boston, congratulations on being the personification of the entire Eastern conference up to this point. But you look at this, you look at this schedule. Most of the league as well, Pat, because I think you go to the Western conference, outside of three teams in the central, I don't know who is good in that conference. And you can honestly say a lot about the East as well. The standings are tight in the East.
Starting point is 00:26:14 I don't know how many of these teams are actually good, though. It's genuinely confounding. But again, you look at you, you just finished off five games in eight days. You're on a five game winning streak. You're really finding yourself in a good position going into this week. You're all of four points off the division lead, which is crazy to say. You're one point or two points off second in the division. So it's a huge opportunity.
Starting point is 00:26:43 And I look at this week and I say, all right, coin flip against the devils. because maybe we'll see the same effort we saw against them the last time. Maybe we revert back to this being the Penguins boogeyman. Calgary, at home, not a lot of excuses there. This is a game that you really do need and should win. In Boston, it's up and down. I can see the, if you can get four to five points out of these three games, you keep yourself right in the mix.
Starting point is 00:27:17 Yeah, I think four out of six. six points should do it this week. Obviously, the goal is to win all three and go on the eight game winning streak. But I think if you can win two of the three this week, I think if you can win the devil's game and then split that back to Mac, I think you're doing pretty well for yourself heading into next week, the week of January 12th, because, you know, the January schedule is also going to be pretty hacked to give the Western Canada trip in there a bit later on this month.
Starting point is 00:27:41 You have a lot of games against Eastern Conference teams also this month. So it's very paramount to keep this done. going again can get two out of three this week i think you're riding high there the devils they're also a bit of a weird team luke hughes is really struggling right now i don't know if you watched on sunday pat he not good to say the least i'll let you uh go find that's not the net that you score in buddy yeah that's that's the way to say it right there he was awful and i don't really think he's been that good this season so yeah we'll dive into more of that for our tuesday edition but that's a devil's team that's definitely there for the taking if you ask me the flames
Starting point is 00:28:18 don't think they're very good and then the Bruins you and I again very odd team in this conference and last but not least before we get out of here congratulations to Ricard Raquel and Eric Carlson making team Sweden deservedly so if I had the guess right now I think Eric Carlson's going to play with Gustav Forsling on the second defensive pair Matisse at Combe is not there he played a lot with at Combe at the four nations last year but think if you had to ask me right now I think they're going to put him with Forsling which I think is a Great pair, Foresling, arguably the best shutdown defender in his own zone. You put him with an offensive dynamite player in Eric Carlson.
Starting point is 00:28:55 I think that makes a lot of sense. Raquel, I think you might see him in a third line role potentially, but he very much deserves it, Pat, especially for the whole last year that he said. I know hasn't been as good so far this year as he was last season, but when you look at the full calendar year, he very much deserves to be there. So congratulations to him as well. Yeah, no-brainer for both of them to be on Team Sweden. been two of the best Swedish players of the last few years.
Starting point is 00:29:22 Eric Carlson has been one of the best Swedish players of all time. So they absolutely deserve the call. And I'll be honest, it's nice to see that there's not a lot of penguins going to the Olympics because this is going to be one hell of a sprint to the Stanley Cup playoffs. And as much as we may want to see our boys on the international stage, I want our boys rested so they can maybe maybe get back to the playoffs just maybe but at the very least they're very much in the race they're in a playoff spot right now and i'll keep saying it they're going to stay in this race all season whether they get in that's the big question but i am confidently
Starting point is 00:30:05 saying that they will stay in the race all season long unless something very odd happens but i think that's going to do it for this edition of the locked on penguins podcast thank you all so take the time to listen to slash watch this one pat and i will be back with another edition for you all on tuesday i almost thought that the penguins were playing the devils on tuesday for some reason complete brain fart for me but that's whatever we'll be back still on tuesday with a fresh episode we'll preview the devil's game later on this week on thursday of course but we'll have the latest news and notes on tuesday same for wednesday on rower helmet wednesday and then we'll get you all set for penguins devils on thursday so for patrick damp i am hanser hodies
Starting point is 00:30:45 thank you all so much for tuning in we appreciate it we will be back on tuesday
