Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins - Penguins Training Camp Day One: Koivunen SHINES, Muse gets intense!

Episode Date: September 19, 2025

Penguins training camp has officially begun, and there were plenty of takeaways from the first day of on-ice practice! Patrick and Hunter begin their training camp journey with the Penguins on this ep...isode, and it begins at the beginning: with a Kyle Dubas press conference where he pushed back on Sidney Crosby's agent Pat Brisson's comments, gave updates on his rebuilding plans, and more! Then, they dive into the on-ice sessions where second-year forward Villie Koivunen had a big day, Dan Muse ran an intense practice, as well as other standouts. Finally, a lot of the Penguins' veterans seem defiant this year after a few seasons of disappointment, but will that defiance and motivation lead to a better year? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!IndeedNow, you can speed up your hiring process with a $75 Sponsored Job Credit. As we said yesterday, for the next couple
Starting point is 00:01:38 weeks, our show will be dropping a little bit later than normal because Hunter will be at training camp giving his observations, seeing what's going on. So we got to give him the time to get all those observations done and then deal with Pittsburgh traffic. If you know, you know, but let's start at the beginning for today. Kyle Dubus, began the day with a press conference and buddy, he did not hold back. He pushed back on all the Crosby trade stuff. He pushed back on the rebuild. We have talked to death, the Crosby stuff.
Starting point is 00:02:19 I don't think we need to get into it. He essentially said he didn't take a lot from it. He barely paid attention to it. He has to talk to Bresson quite a lot because Breson has five clients with the penguins including Cid. So that's the second most clients he has on any NHL team. So they're going to have to talk quite a bit. But I do want to connect to the dots here.
Starting point is 00:02:44 He pushed back pretty hard on Bresson's comments by basically saying he can be frustrated with where we are. I understand the frustration. We understand how good Sidney Crosby continues to be. But we have a plan in place. And we are not going to deter ourselves from that plan. And with that, Kyle Dubus planted his flag and said, I may not be the most powerful person in the Penguins organization, but I'm way up there.
Starting point is 00:03:13 He put his foot down. I wasn't there for the press conference, but I was kind of driving while some quotes were coming out. At least the drive there, by the way, was actually good. I got there in about 45 minutes. On the way home, it took me about two and a half hours. Usually that's a 45-minute commute home. 70 minutes standstill on 579 going towards a Liberty Bridge.
Starting point is 00:03:32 No one in this city knows how it emerged. And I thought Washington, D.C. traffic was bad. But apparently this was worse. And I didn't think it could get worse because D.C. traffic is among the worst in the country. Anyways, outside of my grievances with Pittsburgh drivers and Pittsburgh traffic, even though I love this city as a whole. Kyle Dubis, based on what he said, and this is what I took away from it, he said, nicely, screw you, Pat Brasson.
Starting point is 00:03:58 This is my team. And I'm going to run it the way I see fit. I am going to keep going with the plan that I have. You want to cry about it? Okay. You want to be mad about it? Okay. That's not going to determine me.
Starting point is 00:04:10 I'm not just going to be signing a bunch of free agents and making all these aggressive trades and trading all these prospects to, you know, go for whatever it is you want to call it, you know, a very, very short-term game. I think that's the best way to put it because he wants to be a contender for the long haul. So that's the first thing I took away, is that he planted his foot down and said, I'm done, Pat, you're not going to keep doing this. And I will say, I saw the quote that apparently Pat Brisson calls him like once a day.
Starting point is 00:04:41 Dude, if that person call me once a day about, especially about stuff regarding Cindy Crosby, I think I would just block his number. Like, how was Kyle Dubos not blocked his number yet? It all serious to know, again, that was the main thing I took away. One of the best things I wanted to drop too in this from Kyle Dubus that he said, he took it from a friend that he said is in another professional sport saying his friend always says shortcuts cut long runs short and listen i understand the fan base i understand our community
Starting point is 00:05:12 hell i understand even the two of us are so used to the penguins being one of the best teams in the nchl as they have been for the last two decades but the penguins at the beginning of this era let's call it what it is they got extremely lucky with all of their draft picks from Flurry all the way through Jordan Stahl. That often doesn't happen, if ever does that happen, where all of those high round picks end up working out. So I like this mentality from Dubus of we're not going to take shortcuts, we're not going to chase big contracts and free agency,
Starting point is 00:05:51 we're not going to leverage the assets we have for a short-term fix, because he could do all that. you could trade for somebody that's not going to work out. We have seen that happen quite a bit over the past few years. And granted, when the opportunity is there, absolutely take it. But you don't need the sugar rush. You need to keep this metaphor going. You need to eat nutritious meals.
Starting point is 00:06:18 You need to work out. You need to drink your water. And you need to get some exercise. And that is what Kyle Dubus is doing with this rebuild. If he really wanted to, He could have went out there this offseason, signed a bunch of big contracts, made some big trades, made Pat Brassan happy. He didn't do it because he's trying to stick to his plan. And hey, the jury is still out, by the way, on whether this plan is going to work.
Starting point is 00:06:42 They are still very early. And this, the early returns, I think so far are fine. But we will fully judge this once this is hopefully complete. If it doesn't get complete, Pat and I are going to crap on it. If it does, we will give him the praise that he deserves. Again, they are still very early on. Right. I don't, I don't want to put a crown on Kyle Dubus's head.
Starting point is 00:07:04 No, no. This is nowhere near done. It's barely even begun, but I do like the fact that he's sticking with it because we see a lot of teams and a lot of general managers just go, well, we had some moderate success. Time to throw this into overdrive. And what do you know in two to three years? They're right back at square one.
Starting point is 00:07:22 Right. Exactly. Another thing that I took away from it, obviously. the big news surrounding Rucker McGroarkey. There's a lot of mysterious stuff going on. Pat, you'll take the L on that. It's not the foot injury that you were kind of speculating. And I know you were just kind of speculating about it.
Starting point is 00:07:36 It looks like it's something else. I actually saw him walking around the facility. He looked fine. It didn't look like he didn't have any braces on, no cast or anything like that. I don't know what it is, but it's obviously bugging him to the point where we don't even know if he's going to participate in training camp.
Starting point is 00:07:54 Again, someone can be walking. totally fine, but still very much banged up. So whatever he has, it's very much affecting him. And Pat, we don't even know if he's going to be at camp. He said apparently he's out indefinitely, which really does suck because I was hoping to see him to start camp and I really wanted to see him push for a spot. But he is going to be out indefinitely. Hopefully he can return towards the latter, the later stages of camp, so he can really start pushing for a spot. But I don't think anyone would be surprised now that he might have to start in Wilkesbury, Once he's officially healthy, get some games.
Starting point is 00:08:28 And then once he's ready, he'll be called up to the main squad. So those were just two things that I kind of saw there. It does feel to me, and this might be a little bit of cope, that they're just being cautious with Rector because he is younger. He does have a good amount of potential. And you don't with where this team is right now and this franchise is right now, you don't have to rush him. You don't have to push him back from injury just because you need to win. And realistically, I feel like if this was something serious, like really serious, they probably would have come out and said he's got a knee injury,
Starting point is 00:09:11 a shoulder injury, whatever, whatever. He's going to be out X amount of time. When you come out and say undisclosed, indefinite, it kind of feels like they're looking at this and going, we don't really know how long it's going to affect him, but we're also not going to rush him back into participation. Because again, he's young, he's got potential.
Starting point is 00:09:34 This team, as of right now, does not have any sort of Stanley Cup or playoff aspirations. So you can let the kid get back to 100%, let him train correctly, and then let him hit the ground running. Exactly. I agree with that.
Starting point is 00:09:48 All that matters is getting him back to 100%. again, just because he was walking fine doesn't mean that, you know, he's not doing with an injury. He obviously is, and hopefully he's able to come back, and then he can start getting some reps, and then he can be back on the NHL main squad as quickly as possible, just because I really think that he can potentially have a good year if he is fully healthy. Last thing I want to get to when it came to the press conference, Dubus did say this, if young players show that they deserve a spot during training camp, they will make the NHL roster, regardless of how it might affect veteran players.
Starting point is 00:10:21 I've been screaming this on the pod for the last couple of weeks. It should not matter how veteran players feel in this situation. If a young player or two or three beats them out or has or have better camps, they should be on the NHL roster. You can figure out what to do with those veteran players as you wish. Now, let's just hope that Dubis and company, they follow through with that. You know, words can say one thing and then the actions say something else. I want the actions to match up with that statement.
Starting point is 00:10:53 And I do think they will, I think. But that was nice to hear during the press conference. It was. And let's take a quick break because I do want to respond to that because I had a bit of a thought about that as well. I will tease it by saying this. I did like that quote. It gives me a lot of hope. But there is a bit of an asterisk I need to put on it.
Starting point is 00:11:14 So we'll continue this discussion on the. other side in our second segment when we come back right after this. Before we do that, though, we've got to tell you about today's first sponsor, and that is Fandul. Back here on the Thursday edition, the Camp Opening Day edition,
Starting point is 00:12:22 of Locked-on Penguins. I'm Patrick Damp. That's Hunter Hodes, our man on the ground. So let's pick it up right where we left off. Dubus was pretty straightforward about young players getting a chance and not automatically deferring to the veterans on the team. Now, here's the thing I want to say about this, because it does feel ever so slightly to me like a rock in a hard place kind of,
Starting point is 00:12:52 scenario because here's the thing. So far, Dubus has done a really good job in my estimation of stockpiling draft picks and getting more prospects into the system. There is no two ways about that. You look at the amount of picks they have. You look how improved their prospect pipeline has become, you can't really deny it. Granted, yes, they still need the big blue chip franchise altering prospect, but he's done a good job of rebuilding what was pretty barren when he got here. However, the easiest way for him to be able to get more picks and get more prospects is he's going to have to shop a lot of these veterans. Now, none of them, with the exception of potentially Raquel Carlson or even Rust, who we will get to later on in the show, are going to fetch you a gigantic return. But at the same time, for them to increase their value, they are going to have to play.
Starting point is 00:13:50 You are eventually going to have to put them in the lineup. They're going to have to get an extended look and they're going to have to perform. Now, at the same time, most of these vets that we're referring to are on expiring deals or only have one year after this. So it's not that big of a deal if you don't move them. But I do kind of look at this like we shouldn't automatically defer to the young guys. And Dubas didn't say he was going to do that. The young kids have to earn it. that was the entire crux of his argument is if they come in they look good they earn a spot they're going to get it
Starting point is 00:14:26 but i also look at it as you do want to keep this rebuild going and to do that you're going to have to move some of these vets and to get to move them they're going to have to show some value at some point yeah i mean i don't know if they're going to play every gaming there's still going to be some vets on the roster my main point was that i don't think it's a given that all of them are going to make the roster and be every night players. As for the ones that make the team, and I'm not talking about, you know, Brian Russ, Tommy Novak, Ricard, Raquel, any of those guys. I'm talking, you know, Kevin Hayes, Danton Heinen, you know, Noel O'Chari. Those are just three, obviously, that pop to mind. You know, we can go into more, obviously, Pat, if you want, but those
Starting point is 00:15:07 are just the three of them that come to mind. You know, you're going to have, you would have to play them at some point, but I don't think it would be on it every night basis if enough young show out during training camp and speaking of that by the way the biggest standout to me of the first three groups today or you know team one team two t three nearly equivalent uh he was knifing through dudes that entire practice session starting at 845 in the morning ending at 10 15 in the morning it was not even fair like it was honestly and there was legit nchl talent on team one just knifing through these dudes like it was no tomorrow like he keeps that up he's a lot for this roster honestly and he doesn't even have to play at that high of a level to be a lock.
Starting point is 00:15:48 Like it was unbelievable what he was doing with a puck on his stick. Scored a beautiful goal going right through two players, showed off his playmaking ability, which is his strong suit. And one more thing. His skating, which going into, you know,
Starting point is 00:16:04 his draft was not considered a strength. He's been able to work on it. It's gotten better over time. It looked like a completely, just a completely different skating here. at training camp. And I thought it looked better at the prospect challenge. It looked twice that at training camp. It looks like he has worked on his skating quite a bit over these last several months. And, you know, if he has that during the regular season, it's going to make him hopefully more dangerous.
Starting point is 00:16:30 Again, I don't want to create too high of expectations. I think 15 goals, 35-ish points, maybe even 40 points would be a resounding success for Billy Coiffin. If he makes the team, I just wanted to say that he was by far the biggest star today. He was knifing through dudes, scoring some nice goals showcasing his vision. He was fantastic and he was also getting a lot of time with Sidney Crosby. A lot of the videos I saw from you from a lot of the other reporters, including your colleague Kelsey Surmats, it looked like he was really flying today. And obviously we don't want to react too much to one practice session on the first day of training camp.
Starting point is 00:17:07 But early returns are good. And like you said, the skating was the biggest thing that stood out to me. It was smooth. It was fluid. He was really pushing the pace. And with that in mind, I saw this written about, tweeted about, whatever, you name it. It seems like Dan Mews might have listened to our show on Wednesday because by all accounts, Hunter, and obviously you were there.
Starting point is 00:17:35 We're going to continue with your observations here. It seemed like it was a pretty intense first day on the ice. And as I said yesterday, if there was a good way for Dan Mews to acclimate himself with a roster that includes Crosby, Malkin, Latang, Carlson, and Rust, it's to come out and have a pretty intense camp. And after day one, feels like it's going that way. Some people may say that this guy's like very stoic, Dan Mews, that is. He was anything but that on the ice. He was yelling, screaming the whole time, banging his stick against the glass, the whole coaching staff and the other. and the other members of the staff,
Starting point is 00:18:14 they were just banging their sticks on the glass shouting. This was a competitive, and I mean a competitive, intense practice. There were like a lot of, you know, scuffles today, that might happen maybe a little bit later in camp, but you could really see the compete level. And this was just the first day, by the way. I think it's going to keep getting even more competitive
Starting point is 00:18:34 as we go deeper in the camp. But that was a very intense practice. You know, the drills were really fun to watch. A lot of two on two action, a lot of three on three on man rush work. You know, three on twos defending two on ones. Those were a lot of fun to watch. It's always cool when you see the quote unquote suicides fat where you skate up, skate back, skate a little more, skate back.
Starting point is 00:18:57 I hated doing those when I was the kid. Those were always the worst. You know what is an underrated nightmare of a skating drill? Did you ever have to do the lightning drill? Which it's a, it is a. It is a version of the Herbie, but it's a little bit different. And it's time depending upon the coach. The teams I played for, we did 30 seconds.
Starting point is 00:19:18 And it was goal line to far blue line. Once you stop at the far blue line, you go to the near blue line stop. And then you go to the far goal line and you got 30 seconds to do it. That one, everyone loves to talk about the Herbie. But lightning drill, man, that in the Minnesota mile were nightmares. I would take a Herbie over that all day long. The main thing I remember man is just suicides. Those always would just wipe me.
Starting point is 00:19:45 And I think a lot of my teammates out. But again, I was only like, you know, 12, 13 at the time. Again, people, I didn't play that long when I was a kid. It was, it was fun when I did. But I wish I started when I was a lot younger. But suicides would always just wipe me out. And you saw quite a bit of those. A lot of very good skating drills during this as well.
Starting point is 00:20:04 I think that was also a big emphasis during this practice session. But yeah, man, this was a super competitive practice. We can get into more takeaways. I had them actually finishing on my article for the hockey news as well. That will be out a little bit later. But there was a lot of good takeaways from this one. I thought Afghani Malk and Anthony Manta looked really good together. I could tell that Dam Euse was looking at that as a duo because you sign Anthony
Starting point is 00:20:27 Mantha coming off a 23-go year in 23-24. Torne ACL last year, by the way, his skating looked totally fine today. He would look like he was back to 100%. It didn't look like he was hurt at all. I thought they looked really good together. Malkin was scoring some nice goals off the rush. Manta was showcasing his skating ability during some drills. Do not be surprised if that is a line that you see for opening night against the Rangers. I think he was kind of testing that out of it.
Starting point is 00:20:52 It does feel like Manta was brought in to be a steady winger for Evgeny Malkin. And what have we been screaming about on this show for quite a while now? Find Vgeny Malkin a damn consistent winger because he isn't. what he used to be, but if you give him some help, he's still got some juice left in the tank. But that is going to do it for our middle segment. When we come back, we got to talk about some of the veterans and the returning guys who were at camp today and some of the comments that they had after practices. We will do that when we get back right after this.
Starting point is 00:21:31 But we got one more sponsor to get to, and that is Monarch Money. Most people can't name all of their financial accounts or even what they're. their worth, whether it's 401k's, properties, investments, or savings, and when you don't have that full picture, you can end up leaving money on the table. Starting point is 00:22:48 Use code locked on NHL at monarchmoney.com in your browser for half off your first year. That's 50% off your first year at monarchmoney.com with the code locked on NHL. Finishing up the Thursday edition of the Locked on Penguins podcast, I'm Patrick Damp right, right alongside Hunter Hodes. And my favorite quote that I got from today, I didn't get it. I read it. Should be clear on that was from Brian Rust. Because Brian Rust and Eric Carlson were asked by some reporters about all the rumors,
Starting point is 00:23:29 all the trade talk and everything in the off season. And what did Brian Rust have to say about his names being in trade talks, Hunter? Quote, I plan on play. playing here until I'm 40. He said with a smile. Rust, if you don't know, it's 33 years old. Now, I understand the compulsion, and I'm not someone who is saying Brian Rust is untouchable. I think anybody who's not named Crosby, Malkiner, Latang, is touchable. You can move them if you need to.
Starting point is 00:24:04 But Brian Rust is real close to that, just because he exemplifies the Penguins. He worked hard. He earned everything he got. He has been a pillar of the community. He's a leader. And I think having a player like that around will help with this team's rebuild. And especially the younger players, someone that they can look up to. He's a bona fide leader in that locker room.
Starting point is 00:24:30 I've said it on the show before. But when, you know, when someone like Crosby, Malkin, or Lattang don't want to talk to the media, Brian and Russell will be like, hey, come over here. I'll deliver a message that they probably would give, just that they're not talking today, but I'm part of the core leadership group. And I think he has the ability to, again, help some of these younger players,
Starting point is 00:24:49 you know, develop some of their games. And, you know, he's also aging really well when it comes to his game. You know, he's usually a lock for 20 to 25 goals a season. He just had one hell of a year last year. And, you know, again, of the three,
Starting point is 00:25:03 I still think it's the least likely that he gets traded. You know, it's to be determined if he finishes his career. with the penguins, but, you know, he was also totally fine today. I don't think he stood out as much as some other players did, but he also doesn't need to because he's a lock for the roster, and he's going to be totally fine this year. There was also a funny quote from Eric Carlson basically said, yeah, they never really called me about, you know, waving my no trade clause.
Starting point is 00:25:28 The only time I ever heard about it was when I was reading articles. So there's typical Eric Carlson for you. He very much wants to make the Swedish Olympic team. he's obviously not on the team yet, but that's something that he's working for this year, and that's something I'm also putting in my article. I thought Carlson was also totally good today. He was matched up quite a bit with Harrison Brunick and drills with team one.
Starting point is 00:25:49 I was a good battle between those two. I thought Brunich defended him as well as he could, but Carlson, like the way that he skates with a puck on a stick, sometimes it's a bit much for someone as young and as raw as Brunick, but I still felt like Brunich put up a pretty good fight against him. So I like seeing those two go at it. And Carlson, remember Pat last year, we didn't see him at all during training camp.
Starting point is 00:26:08 He was hurt and it really affected his start to the season because he wasn't himself for the first several weeks before getting his game back bit by bit. Now that he's back for a full camp, hopefully that helps him and he's under a new system. So I like to start that he had for at least this first day. Yeah, you beat me to that. I do think that I don't want to make it a one to one comparison because it isn't, but I do think there was some similarities from Ricard Raquel, two years ago to Eric Carlson last year.
Starting point is 00:26:40 I think injuries and missing time kind of had them stumble out of the starting blocks and they weren't really able to get to that top form. Again, I know that people have been disappointed with Eric Carlson's performance as a penguin. I think there's a little, or at least was a little bit more there that he could give. But I do think new system, full training camp should he run? remain healthy. I do think we'll see a bit of a different Eric Carlson this season. And I think that his quote about wanting to go to the Olympics, while extremely confident, while extremely shir in himself saying, I think I'm a lock on that team, but I still have to prove myself and
Starting point is 00:27:25 show them I can still play at a very high level. I think that's also Carlson kind of admitting. I have a little bit more to give. Yeah. And I do think there is, and there's a great story. on the Penguins website from Michelle Creckiolo. She spent the day with Evgeny Malkin during season ticket holder deliveries, and it's an incredible read. You get a really good look at Hvgeny Malkin. But I do think that this might, I don't want to make any declarative statements about the season. We'll see what happens.
Starting point is 00:27:55 We'll analyze it as it happens. But it does feel like there's a, especially among the older players on the team, especially the leadership group, there's a little bit of a why not. us feeling with them. It kind of feels like they all know that they've disappointed and they kind of want to shove that in everybody's face this year. Well, they kind of had that last year too and we all saw how that went. But so I don't want to put too much stock into that. You know, it's why we play the games, of course, but we also what happened last year, it's up to them to not have to repeat themselves. Again, this is still only day one. It's a long camp here.
Starting point is 00:28:36 Still got two full weeks of this before, you know, opening night against the Rangers on October 7th, a little more than two weeks before opening night, but two weeks of training camp, that is. So, you know, band type of attitude last year didn't really work out, you know. Yeah, let's be real here. They have to go out and prove that. Yes. But I am at least satisfied that they're kind of going in to camp with that edge, where they know they've disappointed,
Starting point is 00:29:06 they know they haven't lived up to expectation. And granted, we don't have high expectations for them going into this year, but I have always said, Sidney Crosby might be and probably is one of the most competitive human beings on the planet. He's also one of the most petty. And if you get him upset, you tell him he can't do something, gets real petty about it. And it kind of feels like we're going to get that competitive petty Sidney Crosby this year.
Starting point is 00:29:41 Oh, 100% for that. I agree with you when it comes to, you know, Sid, just being like that. As for the rest of the roster, again, we'll see. They can talk up that having an edge. We all know what happened last year. We're going to be more competitive. Let's see it on the ice. You know, I don't need this team being blown out.
Starting point is 00:30:02 every night there were way too many of those last year. I'll say this. You can be bad this year, but I still want you to be competitive in a lot of those games. Like that's what I'm here for. I want to see the effort. I want to see the heart. You know, you are very much seeing the effort during this first practice.
Starting point is 00:30:16 And if that's the intensity of it they're going to play at during regular season games, sign me up because, again, that was a very intense competitive practice. Otherwise, I thought Sergey Murashaw very much dazzled in net. I still think he's probably at least a year away from becoming a full-time NHLer, but he's coming. I think another year in Wilkesbury, a full year as the starter will pay off. And I think we could be looking at next year, potentially, as him cracking the roster. That's best case.
Starting point is 00:30:44 I don't think it's going to be this year. There's just too many goalies in running right now. But he showcases agility in the creast and he gives up many goals during drills. He looks apart every time you watch him. He's carrying a lot of momentum into this camp after the Prospects Challenge. Goleys are very much voodoo, but I like the way. that he played in one more pat i thought jackson and he had a really nice first day he's very much battling for that final defensive spot that's offensive starter spot on the right side i thought he was
Starting point is 00:31:11 skating really nice scored some nice goals during drills he was banged up for a lot of last year just felt like he was never healthy well he's back healthy now and he's trying to compete for a spot so watch out for him going for the rest of the camp one day in the books so many more to go and as hunter has said he is going to be there to watch it all and give us his thoughts. I'm going to try to join them for a few days. We'll see what happens. But if nothing else, make sure you're here with us on Locked on Penguins throughout training camp to get your
