Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins - Penguins WINLESS on western road trip after another loss in Utah

Episode Date: October 20, 2026

The Penguins tried to mount a comeback against the Mammoth on Monday, but ultimately fell short. Hunter and Patrick begin the Tuesday edition of the Locked On Penguins podcast by going over what went ...wrong in a 5-4 loss to the Utah Mammoth. (00:30) They take a look at the defense, who have been subpar for the most part, and how a lot of the problems stem from poor defensive zone play. They then discuss some positives from the game, including players like Rickard Rakell and Egor Chinakhov breaking through and scoring goals. (10:50) They also talk about how the Penguins could turn things around over the next couple of weeks. Finally, with another loss on the books, it’s time to give their three shames of the game. Starting point is 00:00:00 The Pittsburgh Penguins went over on this four-game road trip, and the same problems that were there at the beginning of the trip were also there at the end of the trip. Your Locked-on Penguins, your daily podcast on the Pittsburgh Penguins, part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Hello and welcome to the Tuesday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast. I'm one of your host, Hunts for Hodes, joined, as always by my co-co's Patrick Tamp. A bit later on in the show, we're going to discuss. Whether the penguins can turn this thing around because they have lost seven of their first 10 games to open the 26-27 season.
Starting point is 00:00:41 We're also going to get into our three shames of the game of Pat. Let's just jump right into it. A 5 to 4 loss to the Utah Mammoth and 0-4 road trip, no points, zero out of eight points on this road trip, which is simply inexcusable. It's unacceptable. And to add the cherry on top, it's not good enough. And there was one key to the game that we got right at least a fast start. The Penguins got it. They got a lead at the start of the game,
Starting point is 00:01:07 and it was a power play goal, no less. Eric Carlson makes it 1-0. A bit of a lucky bounce, but obviously you will take that. Penguins go up 1-0-0-0, and you're like, okay, good start here. And then it all goes to crap, where the penguins are lost in the defensive zone for the rest of the game. Lawson-Krauss, beautiful pass to Clayton Keller to tie the game, but I still think Chinikov and Krosby need to be better there. You can't let someone skate right past you to the front of the net and just score there.
Starting point is 00:01:33 Like both players have to be better in that situation. But the same problems persisted in this game. Number one, Pat, the defensive zone breakouts were still horrid. And their defensive zone play was also disgusting. Players were coming in just all alone getting chances right and run the net. There was no resistance at all. We'll discuss Declan Carlisle a little later on the show, Pat. But those are the same two issues and no one wants to fix it for some reason.
Starting point is 00:02:01 I mean, let's just, let's park right there because you can bemoan some of the lack of production from the forwards, and I understand it. You can bemoan some of the goaltending from Murashav and Sheelov's over the past couple of weeks. And it's understandable. They have been somewhere between inconsistent and shaky. I don't think I would call either of them bad at this point. Murshov has given up basically one bad goal. Sheelov has given up a couple, but he's had more stuff. starts.
Starting point is 00:02:33 The beginning and end of the Penguins problems is the defense. They can't get the puck. They can't get the puck to the forwards on the breakout. They are providing zero offense. They are, except for Eric Carlson and even, we can say Declan Carlisle, but it's-
Starting point is 00:02:50 Hey, Pat, he scored his third goal of the season, even though for the rest of the game, he was pretty bad. Yeah, and we will get to Carlisle later in the show. But the thing is, they can't get out of their own zone. They can't defend, down low. And by the time they get out of their own end, the forwards are gassed because they've
Starting point is 00:03:06 been defending for 45, 60 seconds or more. And you, I understand that you'll look at this forward group right now and be unimpressed and that's fair, but they're not getting the opportunities to go be effective because they're getting hemmed in their own end or they're just not getting clean breakouts. And that's becoming a massive issue for this team. Yeah, the amount of times, Pat, that I saw a first pass out of their own zone, intercepted or broken up, it was just like virtually every shift. Like, it was a miracle when they were getting time in the offensive zone because the defenseman can't break the puck out.
Starting point is 00:03:49 And when they try to do that first pass, it's always intercepted or broken up and the other team gets the puck. And then, boom, they're back to defending once again. And yeah, the fine man unit out there needs to be a lot better at defending. but the zone exits have still just been a disaster to start the season. And until those get fixed, I don't think you're going to really see them forecheck their butts off. Like, yeah, we've seen it in sports against Dallas.
Starting point is 00:04:13 We've seen it against Montreal. We've seen it against Philadelphia. But really ever since those games, we haven't seen it in a lot of these where they're just having to defend the whole time. And they're leading players wide open. They're gassed. Both of those issues, their end zone play and the breakouts, need to be addressed and may need to be addressed ASAP if they want to turn this around.
Starting point is 00:04:34 And the forwards do have to take a little bit of accountability here. Their defensive zone performance is not great. You talked about the Keller goal where both 87 and 59 completely lose Clayton Keller and he goes almost uncontested to the front of the net, the score of the goal. He gets a little bit of resistance, but it's too late by both of them. They both notice almost at the same time that they've left a man unchecked. and they get a little bit on them, but it was too little too late. Overall, though, the thing that is bothering me is you look at a lot of Utah's five-on-five goals,
Starting point is 00:05:13 and they had a few of them last night. They all stem from poor defensive zone coverage. They all stem from an inability to get out of their own end. It's not, you know, oh, they got a really good break on that, or with the exception of the Yamamoto goal, which was just a nicely played fast break that eventually you do want to see Sheelovs squeeze it and stop it. A lot of their goals were simply just,
Starting point is 00:05:42 they blew assignments in the defensive zone, they got hemmed in, and the mammoth took advantage of it. That also Pat, and the Netfront defense has also been really bad too. Like for example, and I put that in the DZone coverage because it's part of it, the Penguin's defensive core,
Starting point is 00:05:58 I don't want to revert into caveman brain here, but they're pretty soft. Especially Declan Carlisle. And we can just get into that real quickly here. He was really soft on two of those goals against. One of the pat, he just can't move anyone out of the way so she loves can see the puck.
Starting point is 00:06:19 Don't get me wrong. I think she loves kind of misplay that a little bit because he moved for no reason. But Carlisle still needs to get his man out of the way or get himself out of the way so that Sheelov can see the puck a little bit better. Again, Sheelves does not get an A grade for that either, but I don't know what Carlisle is doing there.
Starting point is 00:06:35 And then earlier in the game, there's a puck right there. He totally whiffs on it, and Utah takes advantage, and they stuff home the loose change. You got to clear that puck. So just horrific net front defense by everyone, but especially Carlisle,
Starting point is 00:06:48 like he was awful in this game, especially in front of the net. In the preseason and then early into the year, I liked a lot of Carlisle's fire, his ability to join the fight, his ability to be physical. And for the last couple weeks, it has just disappeared.
Starting point is 00:07:04 And listen, the net front goal from Nate Schmidt, I mean, you're not going up against the jumbo. You're not going up against a massive dude. Like, you got to move them. Or at the very least, you've got to give Shilov's a chance and at least communicate to him that,
Starting point is 00:07:23 hey, shot's coming from the point so he can readjust across the screen. and Carlisle just kind of ties up his man and leaves it at that. And that's just unacceptable net front defense. And as a whole, this unit on the back end just cannot defend the front of the net. No, they can't. I mean,
Starting point is 00:07:44 they can't really defend it all right now. So until that changes, Pat, like I feel you're just going to keep seeing results like this. So Dan Musin and his staff have a lot of work to do to try and get the defense to defend a lot better, exit the zone a lot better so that the forwards can really get to work in the offensive zone and get to that forechecking that we know that they can do. But it all starts in the D zone with the exits and their play in the D zone in general. But that's going to do it for our first segment. Coming up in the second segment, we're going to discuss a couple of the positives from last night because
Starting point is 00:08:16 there were some. And whether Pat, they can turn this around. We'll also get to the three James a bit later on in the show as well. And that's all coming up right after this. You may know Navy Federal Credit Union, but do you know who can join Navy Federal Credit Union? It's probably more people than you think, and it might even include you. My father-in-law, Jim was a Navy veteran. He served in the Vietnam War, and while he served, he joined Navy Federal Credit Union. He had three daughters in his son. One of his daughters was my wife, Karen, who joined Navy Federal Credit Union as the daughter of a member. And my father, Ed, was an Army veteran. He served in the Korean War. He was eligible to join Navy Federal Credit Union. And even though I never served as the son of a veteran and as the spouse of a member,
Starting point is 00:09:04 I'm eligible to join Navy Federal Credit Union as well. So once again, all active duty service members of all branches of the military can join, all veterans of all branches of the military can join, and the families of active duty service members and veterans can also join. A lot more people can join Navy Federal Credit Union than you think. And if you're one of them, you can find out more at Navyfederal.org. And we're not done, and we still have to tell you about one more sponsor, which is Bauer. If you've played hockey at any level, chances are you've had Bauer gear in your bag.
Starting point is 00:09:37 They've been in the game for almost 100 years and are one of the most trusted names in all of hockey. You'll see Bauer on players everywhere from the NHL and PWHL down to your local ring. Hockey season is underway, and if you're still playing with the same stick, you had two or three seasons ago, it might be time for an upgrade. And Bauer's got you covered. Bauer's back with their new Pulse 2 stick, and it's even better than the original. original. The upgraded design makes every shot feel effortless with an easy load and quick release that can catch even the best goaltenders off guard, and it comes in your choice of black or white graphic. I know I'm not lacing up my skates anymore. Haven't done that in quite a few
Starting point is 00:10:12 years, but I watch hockey every night for this show. Bowler is everywhere from NHL stars ripping one-timers to the PWHL. When you see the best players in the world trusting the same brand, that should tell you something. So bring your game to life with the Bauer Pulse Tuesday available at your local Bower retailer or online at Bauer.com. Use a promo code Lockdown 26 to get free standard shipping on your order. One code used per customer cannot be combined with other discount codes. All right, we're back here on the Tuesday edition of the Lockdown Penguins podcast. I'm one of your host, Hunter Hodes, joined by my co-s, Patrick Nampen.
Starting point is 00:10:50 All right, Pat, so we obviously discussed all the D-Zone struggles that's been highlighted plenty on the show so far. I do want to discuss a couple of positives because I don't want to spend this entire show whipping on them for 30 plus minutes. I know we've been doing that a lot lately. I do think there were some good players last night. Igor Chinakov, and I see him get off the Schneide. Really big goal for him.
Starting point is 00:11:14 Rickel, he breaks his curse to start the season. Nice goal around the net front. Really nice job from him. Those are the main two pad I really wanted to shout out. And of course, Eric Carlson gets his goal. I do think he was a bit better last night as well. He has the points, so it felt parts of his game have been lacking,
Starting point is 00:11:31 but I do think he was better in general last night as well. You kind of saw him. It's not a surprise, Pat, I should say, that he's playing better with Spencer Stastney because Stassany was playing well with Crystal Tang. Carl Wiles was really struggling up on that top pair. Dam Euse made a change there, and it was for the better because I do think
Starting point is 00:11:48 Carlson played pretty well on that pair with Stassie, in my opinion. So I just wanted to highlight a couple of positives, even though they didn't get the result, but two players that really needed to score did find the back of the net. And if they're able to get out of this rut, that could be huge for them. I will say this about last night's game to kind of build off of what you said. We spent the first segment destroying this team. And understandably so, they're not playing well to start the year.
Starting point is 00:12:20 I liked the majority of the game last night by the penguins. There were problems. And I'm not denying them. But let me just frame it this way. A minute 36 into the third period, it is 5-2 mammoth. The way this trip has gone, the way the start of this season is gone, it would have been incredibly easy for the penguins to just go, it ain't happening on this trip.
Starting point is 00:12:45 It's not. We don't have it. And they just make the third period of formality. They lit a fire under their own asses. And they played pretty damn hard for the, the third period. They pushed back against the mammoth. And I think I also don't want to make that sound like they decided to wake up when it was five to two. They, they had, the problem was so many of their mistakes ended up in the back of their net in the first two periods. But they had
Starting point is 00:13:13 moments that went well. You brought up Raquel, you brought up Carlson and Chinikov. Sid, I thought, had another really solid game, even though he took the dueling minors in the second period. That was a captain who was basically sending a message to his team to wake the hell up and that they got a fight. Also, there's no way that Andrew Peek of all people is telling Cindy Crosby to cry. Brother, come on, man. Yeah, that's, uh, he's on a very short list of players who you don't get to say that. But no, we don't need to worry about that. He's the top five player of all time. Come on, man. But I will also, I will look at it, I will look at it this way. I looked at the way they played the game, especially in the third period.
Starting point is 00:13:57 And I see enough effort. I see enough positives that I can see them eventually turning this around. But as you can see if you're watching us on YouTube, the bullet point on the rundown. It was just a little too late and a little too little. Okay, so a couple points off that. Number one, I think for me, do I think they played well for a lot of that game? no, I felt the start of it, at least due to get the opening goal, was good. But when Utah pushback, they kind of reverted back to the same things we saw against Colorado and Vegas,
Starting point is 00:14:32 where they really had no answer for it. They were not breaking the puck out cleanly. I mean, they were getting some chances, but a lot of them were one and done, and the puck was going back the other way, and they were having to defend the whole time. Third period was by far their best period of the game. It would just would have been nice if they were able to play like that in the first two periods, because you're right. They punched back.
Starting point is 00:14:55 They had a glorious chance at the end of the game. And let's get into that right now, actually, Pat. So Carlson uncorks it. There's a mad scramble from the net. It looks like it's a tapping. And Kendall's right there. And so is Sidney Crosby. I know some people are going to be like,
Starting point is 00:15:11 well, you know, he should have just ignored it for Cid. And he easily could have, because if he does ignore it, I do think Cid scores there and they get at least a point and this game goes to overtime. However, I have no problem with what Kim, did. He went for it. Like any player I think in that situation would go for it. It was a little bit of a lucky save, but it was also at the same time a great save
Starting point is 00:15:31 by Kosa because he was able to get the pat out. I do think though there are two things to be said about that moment with Kendall. One, it's instinctive. There was no thought put into that. That was he saw the rebound. He saw the net. He goes for it. 99.99.999% of hockey players are going to do that.
Starting point is 00:15:51 They're not going to have the. know how or the instinct to just go, well, SIDS's right behind me. If I let this fall, he's just going to bury it. The other thing I will say, being the smart type of hockey player that he is, I have a feeling if he finds himself in this situation again, which I think is going to be exceedingly rare because it's such a specific moment, he'll probably know next time if SIDS right behind him to just let it go. And maybe they practice it, maybe they don't.
Starting point is 00:16:22 I don't think they should. It's such a rare situation that you don't need to practice it. But he did something instinctive and just about every hockey player is going to try to do that. And then Kasa gets a piece of it. I like their effort to try to come back. I like the way that they played in that third period. And at the end of the day, the onus now is going to be on the team to take that effort and build on it. Yep.
Starting point is 00:16:51 Exactly. Like, you're going to have to try and take that momentum, even though you went over on the trip. You had a good third period. Take what you can from that. Come home, play a really good Panthers team on Thursday, and try to get back in the win column, get the two points, and then you go on from there.
Starting point is 00:17:09 You have Nashville. Utah, that same team you just lost to comes back in only a few days. So maybe you can channel that into that game. You have the California trip after. Again, by no means are the next 10 games easy. I think, are they easier than these first 10? Sure, but there are still pretty difficult games in there in general. But I will be fascinated to see if they can at least channel some of this as they come home, because, you know, it is getting late early. You can't make the
Starting point is 00:17:38 playoffs in October, but you can certainly miss them. And they've, we're 10 games in. Like, I like looking at these in kind of chunks to start the season. We probably won't know how good or bad this team is until probably Thanksgiving around that time. That's usually like my first benchmark. I know it's like the old saying as well, Pat, if you're in a playoff spot there, you're likely to be in one by the end of the season. That's usually like my first benchmark in general. Like, okay, how good are you by that point?
Starting point is 00:18:06 So, so months ago until that time. Well, I got to wake up here. Here's the thing I want to build off of from you, Hunter, about there's a good chance it's going to get late early with this team. Because look at the next couple of weeks. They come home, they have the Panthers. The Panthers have figured it out. They're healthy.
Starting point is 00:18:28 They're mostly back. You have the predators who are better and they're playing better. It's not going to be an easy game. Then you got the mammoth again. You just had a tough one against them. Then you have the habs who are pretty darn good. And then you've got the Vegas Golden Knights again. And then you've got Boston, who is always.
Starting point is 00:18:48 always pretty good. Then you go out west. L.A., not that great, but it's still the western swing. The West, the California trip is always quirky. There's always a game or two that just leaves you shaking your head because it's the California trip. Anaheim, good, young, talented, fast team. That could get difficult. Sharks, not really all that improved, but still, same as Anaheim, young, fast, talented team. Then you come home, Ottawa's playing better, St. Louis is playing better, the Preds again, the stars. Calgary on Thanksgiving Eve, Calgary kind of stinks,
Starting point is 00:19:28 but you don't get a reprieve for the next month. So the penguins are going to have to figure something out and figure it out fast because going into the end of November, there are a lot of challenging games on the first. the horizon and you said it you can't make the playoffs in october november but you can miss them right and again the schedule is quote unquote easier like in terms of like some of the teams you'll face but it's still not like a cakewalk by any means and by the way for the panthers bad days are still without barkov no brad marshand either jacob mark from his day to day said they're not fully all they
Starting point is 00:20:08 they still have quite a few they're good players but not having someone like sasha barcoff and brad marchand is pretty big. So the Penguins will see that Panthers team on Thursday for the NERX game, but yeah, man, they got to figure out a lot of things at this point because it has not been good and I am sure Kyle Dubus is also not thrilled, but, and at the same time,
Starting point is 00:20:27 maybe Pat, he has seen enough to the point where he wants to make some changes already and start the sell off a little bit early. Time will tell if he decides to do something this week, maybe waits another week, waits a bit later on in the season, we'll see. That's going to do it for this segment. Coming up to end the show. We're going to get our three shames of the game in, and that's coming up
Starting point is 00:20:46 right after this. But before we get that, we have to tell you about our final sponsor, which is Odu. Running a business should not feel like you're trying to connect a bunch of systems that were never designed to work together, one app for accounting, another for inventory, another for sales, and somehow none of them talk to each other. All right, Pat, so I'm going to end this over to you so my voice can get a rest. Again, I am still dealing with this very annoying cold. I'm hopefully on the better end of it right now. But Pat, I'll end this over to you. Let's get to our three shames of the game. Yeah, it's a big week for you, Hunter. So we got to hope that that voice starts getting on the mend here.
Starting point is 00:22:37 Because we only got a couple days before we go get you married. So let's get that voice on the men, shall we? Now, without further ado, let's get to our shames of the game. If you're watching us here on YouTube. You can see it on your screen. Here are mine from the game. One shame goes to Archer Shilovs. I don't think he played poorly per se. I think he just had one, especially the Yamamoto goal. I would like to see him squeeze that and keep it from going in. So that's kind of my only tick against Archer Shilovs. Two and three are kind of interchangeable. I'm kind of taking the pairing as a whole. Two for Caden, Corsack, three for Declan, Carlisle. I, Those two, I don't know what to make of because, again, we're 10 games in and we have seen
Starting point is 00:23:24 rough stretches get turned around plenty of times from multiple players over the past few years, but it is clear right now that it appears that Carlisle and Corsac are a downgrade from Shea and Watherspoon. So that's a tough one to eat. I understand the logic and I understand the bet that the penguins and Kyle Dubus are trying to make. You can't bet on reclamation projects and cheap depth to outperform every single year. It's unrealistic. So I understand what they were trying to do. They didn't think that Shay could have a repeat season. They knew that if you can sell a $1 million dollar Parker Watherspoon, who was your top pairing defenseman last year for something younger and similar, you make that move when you're in the position the penguins are.
Starting point is 00:24:17 so I get it, but after 10 games, it does feel like they've downgraded. Yeah, especially with Carlisle and getting to my three shames of the game, Pat, he gets three shames, well, not three, he gets two for me. I apologize. The defensive zone effort, excuse me, gets three shames because that was putrid by basically everyone that was out there in the defensive zone, leaving players wide open, not exiting the zone with control, running around with their, you know, heads cut off.
Starting point is 00:24:45 That's what it was looking like out there. They were leaving already out to dry way too often. So the defense zone effort gets three shames. Declan Carlisle for two shames, as I discuss, his net front defense was not very good. His decision making was not very good. I understand that he scored, which was nice, and he does have three goals this season. But other than that, his play for the last couple of weeks has been really bad. And honestly, Pat, I think it is time for him to be healthy scratched for a game or two.
Starting point is 00:25:14 I would look to bring up Owen Pickering for a game at this point. why not? What do you have to lose? He's playing well down in Wilkesbury. Carlisle is not doing anything for you right now. We know that Ilius Silov is way more of a number seventh defenseman. At least bring up Pickering to see what you have in him this year. That's what I would do. Not sure if they're going to do it, but that's kind of the thinking I have. And then one shame for me, Artie Shilovs. Again, this loss is not on him or anything like that. I just think Pat, in general, on a couple of the goals he could have been better on. The one where he was screened, I think he moved. for kind of no reason there. I just don't think he read it as well.
Starting point is 00:25:52 Again, that's way more on Declan Carlisle. I might be being a little bit nitpicky with Sheelves, but I think if he, I will say, though, if he doesn't move there, excuse me, it's better. And then on the fourth goal, Pat, needs to squeeze that one, in my opinion. I will say, though, Arter Sheloves, kind of called out the defense in his post-game comments.
Starting point is 00:26:10 He did, he did. Saying they won some battles in front of the net. They created a lot of on-man rushes. they just kept coming and coming. That is him saying without saying, my defense hung me out to dry. And if you watch the game, you're not going to disagree with him.
Starting point is 00:26:29 No, I will not. Again, could I be being a little bit in a picky? Sure. But I still think he could have been a little bit better on a couple of the goals. But for the most part, he was hung out to dry. I will still give him one shame, though,
Starting point is 00:26:41 because I do think for the fourth goal pad, as I said, he could have squeezed that one. I know it might be a little bit of a tough chance to stop, but I think it's a saveable shot in my opinion. Yeah, that's the thing. It's, you got to understand the nuances. It's not saying, oh, my God, how did he let that one up? Can you believe it?
Starting point is 00:26:56 It's a, yeah, you know, 50-50. He should probably make the save, but I'm also not going to crush him for it. And I think that's kind of been just the theme of these first 10 games is you can have questions about the goal tending. They're fair. We talked about the goal, Mureshov gave up to lose the game against Chicago,
Starting point is 00:27:16 not a great goal. But everything that's happened with those two, it stems from the defense in front of them. They're not getting a ton of help. And they're not Vezna-Qa-quality candidates yet. And they might never be. So at this point, has their play been great? Not really.
Starting point is 00:27:35 But they're pretty far down the list of the problems. Yeah, it's certainly not been great, but I still think, again, the defensive problems are higher up on that one. obviously. So I think that's going to do it, Pat, unless you have anything else to add for this game. I mean, that's going to do it for this edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast. Thank you all so much to take the time to listen to slash watch this one. Pat and I will be back for a new episode on Wednesday. Warrior Helmet. Wednesday will make your return. We'll have to figure out who to give the helmet to
Starting point is 00:28:06 for this past week, considering they did not win a game, but I'm sure we can come up with something because there were some positive performances from some individual players during this and we'll discuss any other news that comes out when it comes to the Pittsburgh Penguins. So for Patrick Damp, I'm Hunter Hodes. Thank you all so much tuning in. We appreciate it. We'll be back on Wednesday.
