Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins - Penguins without TWO crucial players as home stand begins!

Episode Date: December 9, 2025

The injury bug isn’t quite done with the Penguins, as they will be without the services of Evgeni Malkin and Blake Lizotte. Hunter and Patrick begin the show discussing a very talented and young Ana...heim Ducks team, which will be the Penguins’ first opponent on this five-game home stand (1:18). Despite all the talent and offensive firepower, there is an opening for the Penguins to cool off this red-hot Ducks team. Then, the injury bug is back and biting in Pittsburgh (11:00). The team announced that both Evgeni Malkin and Blake Lizotte have been placed on IR and are designated as week-to-week. Bad as that news may be, it presents an opportunity for the Kid Line. Finally, Arturs Silovs returns to the crease tonight and has a chance to make a statement against a talented team (21:00).Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!GametimeDownload the Gametime app, create an account, and use code LOCKEDONNHL for $20 off your first purchase. If you want to be right in the middle of the action this season, visit fandal.com and place your NFL live bets all season long. Pat, the Ducks, they're coming off a 7-1 thrashing of the Chicago Blackhawks over the weekend.
Starting point is 00:01:10 If you look at the deserved a wind meter on MoneyPuck for that game, it was 99.2% for the Ducks. They absolutely dismantled the Blackhawks at home before starting their Trek East, and it'll begin tonight in Pittsburgh against these penguins and the Ducks, man. They've been a pretty big surprise, at least for me. I didn't see them being this good to start the year. I felt like this was going to be a little early for them, but they've been awesome. Their young core is especially great. Beckett Seneca, remember that name.
Starting point is 00:01:40 Third overall pick in the 2024 NHL draft. He has been on fire to start his first NHL season, nine goals, 24 points. Leo Carlson, also another high pick. He's been great. Leads the team in points, tie for the team lead in goals. Cutter Goat Sheistens coming over from Philadelphia, he has also been great. Troy Terry, another point for game player. Pat, I can keep going down the list if you want. A lot of these young players are off to such great starts in their careers, and there's a reason why this team does have a bright future with all this young talent.
Starting point is 00:02:13 They also do have some good veterans, cough Chris Kreider, who kills the Penguins, has nine goals in his last 10 games against the Penguins, including two against them earlier this year, where Parker Watherspoon had that awful delay game penalty, always have to be on high alert for Chris Kreider, especially in front of the net. I mean, Mattamas has been great. You know, they have Jacob Truba there who has honestly not been bad for them this year. So it's a good mix of a lot of young players, but also some vets who know their role. So this is going to be a pretty big test for them coming off that three, two shootout loss to the stars. We're going to get to the injuries in just a second. But Pat, this duck's team, damn, they're good. They're real good.
Starting point is 00:02:53 And there's no two ways about it because it's not like they're in a bad division. They're in the Pacific, which is just. game of thrones battle of the bastards type level stuff in that in the west right now and i would go as far as to say as much as it might be heresy to say as a penguins fan jacobb has been good for them like that it's amazing what a change of scenery can do for a guy in being wanted can do for a guy because say what you will about everything he has done in when he was a ranger as soon as it became clear that they were trying to get rid of him. He kind of threw it in the tank for the Rangers and was like,
Starting point is 00:03:34 hey, I'm here to clear a paycheck and you guys figure out what you're going to do with me over the next year or two. And when Anaheim came calling, they made the deal. And he's really revitalized his career with the ducks. He's been a bona fide top pairing defenseman for them. And the other part of this is a Penguins fan that's hilarious to me. And it's probably going to bite us in the ass. tonight when the Penguins and Ducks play. Boy, Flyers fans just couldn't wait to absolutely
Starting point is 00:04:04 torch Cutter Godier out of town after they traded him talking about how he wasn't going to amount to anything. He wasn't tough, this, that, and the other. What do you know he's got 33 points in 29 games, 16 goals to go along with it? And that's what happens when you miss on a coaching higher. As much fun as torts is for content, he repels players like that. And when they go somewhere where they can actually be productive, they end up being productive. But this is going to be a tough matchup for the penguins, not just because this is a talented team. It's a very fast team. And good as the penguins have been this season to this point, they still struggle with fast teams. And that is Anaheim to a T. And we saw that in the first notch up. I mean, this was a
Starting point is 00:04:54 up and down running gun game it didn't really suit the penguins it was very wide open fun to watch if you're a casual hockey fan but i'm sure if you're damn used he was probably sitting there cringing like oh my god can we please control things at five on five because they were giving up too many high quality looks to the ducks let's be real the penguins got off to a great start in that game they gave it back early and then they fully gave the game away late with the really bad penalty with parker water spoon but it was just too open i think for the penguins and they're going to have to really do a better job of preventing those high quality looks. I will say for the ducks, for as potent as they are to offensively, defensively,
Starting point is 00:05:32 they do give it back. You look at some of their metrics for this season. In terms of scoring chances allowed at five on five, they're second worst, only to the Minnesota wild. At high danger chances allowed, they are fourth worst with Leo two. Only the Blackhawks, Islanders, and Canucks have given up more high danger chances at five on five than the ducks. So that is an area where the penguins can really attack, just because the ducks have not been good defensively. And then goaltending, usually this would be a strength, but Lucas Dostal, they're very young goaltender who is off to a good start. He is out right now. Also, Peter Morazek is on injured reserve.
Starting point is 00:06:06 So it looks like, as of right now, Dili Huso is going to get the start. He has played in six games a season, four and two records, so fairly solved there, but only in 875%. I mean, the penguins, no matter who's in net, and it's going to be Archer Shilov, by the way. I think the penguins have an edge in this one. So you combine that with the way the ducks play defensively, how many chances they've given up, Pat. There's definitely some areas of the penguins could really exploit, even though the ducks are great offensively.
Starting point is 00:06:33 Yeah, it's a double-edged sword for the ducks this season. You look at their basic top-of-the-line statistics. They're second in the league in goals four per game at 3.5, but then they're 23rd in goals against per game at 3.2. So they outscore a lot of their problems. So if you're the penguins and you can control five on five, you can keep this. You don't have to go 90s Devils and 90s Florida Panthers and turn this into a neutral zone trap, kind of a slog game.
Starting point is 00:07:06 But if you keep it from becoming a track meet, if you're good defensively, you don't give them much in the neutral zone, this is a team that very much can be had. And I'm curious to see what they're going to do tonight simply because watching back a lot of the footage from their first meeting this season. If there's one thing Dan Mews and this offense understood was when they played against Lucas Dostall, you look at the goals they scored against them. They were all deflections. They were all born of having traffic in front. Now, Vili Huso, definitely not Lucas Dostall. But if no, if nothing else, that is a tried and true way to beat NHL goal.
Starting point is 00:07:45 is to take their eyes away, get to the front of the net, have good shots from the point or from the slot, have them change directions, and win that net front battle. They did that to some really good success against the Ducks the first time around. Having them do that tonight, I think, is just a good way to put this Ducks team on their heels because, yeah, I spent a good part of this first segment praising Truba for having a bit of a renaissance, but you look at the rest of their defense. It's fine, but there are a lot of defensemen that I think you can win the battle against, especially in front of the net and especially along the boards. So for the penguins to have any sort of success tonight against the Ducks, those are two keys I'm looking at right
Starting point is 00:08:31 away. Right. Also, the power play has to stay hot. You mentioned the Ducks defense. I mean, Jackson Lekombe, he's great. I like Zolweger quite a bit. Mintakov, I think he's going to be traded at some point. Again, that's someone who I've looked at in the half the penguins to say, hey, you can maybe poach them out of there, but it's also going to be, I don't think the ducks are going to sell low on someone like this, but I definitely think it's an area that the penguins can still attack. There's some studs on the back end again, Zellweger, Lecoma really good. You mentioned Truba, of course, having a bit of a better year, but I do think it's still
Starting point is 00:09:01 an area that the penguins can attack, but again, other teams can also attack the penguins defense, especially the bottom pairing, but I think that'll do it for this first segment. I'm really looking forward to this one, man. This is going to be a really fun game. a Ducks team that loves to push the pace of play. They're really quick. They scored on against the Penguins team that has also been scoring a little bit better as of late and is going to try to play a bit better lockdown defense compared to the first meeting between these two teams.
Starting point is 00:09:28 But it was still such a fun game to watch. But that comes your way. 7 o'clock inside PPG Paints Arena, the first of five straight games at PBGPT's Arena. Again, that'll do it for this first segment. Coming up in the second segment, Pat, the Penguins injury curse knows no bounds. But before we get to that, we have to tell you all about our first sponsor, which is Fandall. NFL Sundays move fast, one big play, and suddenly everything feels different. The game news fast and so can you all right we're back here on this episode of the locked on penguins podcast i'm one of your host hunter hodies joined by my coast patchdamp and pat penguins injury curse man it really it's like you know phanos a soul for a soul that's really what it's been like this season you got justin brazil and no'll chari back great fgeny malkin maintenance day he's out for one game okay not a big deal i mean i heard from a couple people. He was potentially going to be back in a couple of games, and then now he's
Starting point is 00:11:19 week to week with the same injury. So I'll think a little bit of an L on that, a little bit of bad info coming from a couple people, but just stinks that this went from a maintenance day to his day to day with an injury, and now he's week to week. And then also, Blake Lazan, really tough loss as well, especially on the penalty kill. He's been penalty killing his ass off all season long, an absolute hound on the forecheck. Really stinks to lose him, just because of how good the fourth line has been when he's been on there. I know I keep saying that Connor Dewar is the straw that serves the drink on there. But Blake Lazott is also right up there too and continues to not get the love
Starting point is 00:11:54 and support that he should be from Penguins fans, in my opinion, at least some of them. So two really annoying losses after it looked like Lazott was fine after that game against the stars. And then Malkin, I didn't even know he got hurt during the Tampa Bay game. So, Pat, your thoughts on this just stinks, really. either you can remind me or someone in the comments can remind me i for some reason in my head i remember something happening with lazotte against dallas whether he blocked a shot or got hit or something it looked like he was moving really gingerly afterwards so if i'm speculating i think that is probably what that was born from as for gino i said it to you before we hit record i know a lot
Starting point is 00:12:40 of people are going to get a little annoyed that the penguins said, oh, maintenance day, blah, blah, blah, not that big of a deal. It's entirely possible. He just tweaked something and it ends up being worse. Or maybe it turns out he thought he had something small. He gets re-evaluated yesterday or today at the UPM CLEMU complex. And they say, oh, this is actually worse than we thought. So I'd rather them err on the side of caution with how good this team has started and how good Gino has started to say, listen, we want him to be at his best. We want him to be at his relative healthiest because we know how NHL seasons go, then try to force him into action, then try to make him play through it, especially at his age because what would have been 10, 15 years ago, a day-to-day week-to-week injury can very quickly become. a month to month injury and we're in rough territory. However, I will say this, and this was my first thought when I saw the injury news, this is a massive opportunity for the kid line
Starting point is 00:13:48 tonight and moving forward. Yeah, I agree with you. I think they could stand to get a few more minutes. I understand giving, you know, Anthem Brazil a good amount of minutes as well. They've been really good this year. I know Kevin Hayes is the second line center, but I want to see McGordy and them get a little bit more minutes. I think you could stand to maybe give them as many minutes as the second line, maybe if not a couple more, just with the way they keep playing. I mean, that line is living in the offensive zone, virtually every shift. Kendall continues to be great.
Starting point is 00:14:18 I think that next goal from McGority is coming really soon. He's been getting some chances around the net. Covenant ever since that first goal has been playing even better. Should have had his second goal against the Stars, Pat. That was an outrageous save by Jake Hottinger in the third period. That probably would have iced the game for the Penguins. I said this to a commenter on our YouTube channel the other day, but if Coyvenin had not scored that goal against Tampa Bay and then still had not had his first goal and had
Starting point is 00:14:44 that one saved by Ottinger, I don't know what Coyven would have done, man. I think he would just like threw his stick into the crowd and just given up at that point. But still, I like how that line is going. I'm fine with not moving on from the fourth line of, well, Hinen is the fourth line center, you know, again, with Lazot out, but you have Duer and Achari there. You're not going to move any of those two down the line. end up. The top line is not going to change with Novak, Crosby, Russ.
Starting point is 00:15:08 But yeah, if you can give McGrady, Kendall, Coivinen, maybe as many minutes as a second line, if not a minute or two more, I would be very down for that, I think, in this game, and going forward until Malkin and Lazah are ready to come back. Hopefully, these aren't too serious. I mean, Covenin, they said, Pat, he was week to week at one point. He came back within a week, week and a half. So, again, hopefully it's kind of like that with these two injuries. It just thinks that this team was literally about to be fully healthy, just about
Starting point is 00:15:35 and we get two more injuries. Defensively, you'll have Watherspoon and Carlson tonight, Shea and Letang, and then Matt Dumbah is going to come out for Ryan Graves. Jackson and Iveney, he is back up from Wilkesbury, but he's still day-to-day. They're not going to put him back from the lineup just yet. As for the other call-up from Wilkesbury, it is St. Poulan, who continues to play well down there,
Starting point is 00:15:56 but it looks like he's not going to play in this one for the Penguins. He might play in some of these games going forward before he goes back down. I know some people, Pat, were a little upset that Tristan Bros. is not called up. Every Hayes wasn't called up. I still think you're going to see them again later on this season. I think for me, and I'm just speculating a little bit, you know, this might just be, again, only for a short-term thing where they're up here for a few games.
Starting point is 00:16:20 Hopefully, Lizotte and Mall can, you know, come back in a timely manner, and then these two guys can go back down and all that stuff. So those are kind of my miscellaneous thoughts on all that. And also, Ricard Raquel was back at the morning skate today. damn use confirmed after practice he has cleared for contact so his return should be coming in I think maybe a week or two something like that yeah doesn't seem like it's far off for rickel especially if he's cleared for contact already but with the level of injury that he had he's going to have to get some strength back on his shot on his passing and his stick handling and
Starting point is 00:16:53 like I said about ofgeny malkin this is an an opportunity for them to they've earned themselves the opportunity to give these players some extra time because they're not fighting against it. They're right in the mix and they've been playing well so you don't have to rush them back or panic. So that's good news for Raquel that he's skating. You brought up the defensive pairings. You know who I've really got an eye on tonight for this game is Ryan Shea.
Starting point is 00:17:22 You go back and watch the first Anaheim game this season. He was great in that game. He factored in on both of the goals. He factored in on a lot of chances. It was arguably one of his best games as a penguin. And I don't know if it's just because it was Anaheim and he's a California boy or what, but he played quite well against them. And he's played quite well the last couple of weeks.
Starting point is 00:17:47 I want to see him continue that against the ducks. And it's just been really nice to see. And this is more of an overarching thought. When it comes to the Parker Watherspoons in Ryan Shays of the team, We were talking about them in the preseason like they were just these throwaway, who cares, they're not going to make much of a difference type of players. And throughout the first couple months, Watherspoon staple him as they have to Eric Carlson and don't break that up until you absolutely have to.
Starting point is 00:18:19 He's been a genuinely very good top pairing defenseman. And Shea and Letang have some really good chemistry. Le Tang's had some struggles here and there. but the way those two are playing well together, it's been really encouraging to see that from the both of these players in Watherspoon and Shea. Yeah, I mean, Watherspoon continues to be great on the top pair. I have praised Ryan Shea quite a bit this year.
Starting point is 00:18:42 I do think, in my opinion, Patty's turning down ever so slightly over the last week to 10 days. He had that really brutal giveaway to Miko Ranssenon in the Dallas game, like right in front of the net. I was like, dude, that's Miko Ransom, and that's a top 15 to 20 player on the planet. and he knew right away, but I still want him to get his game back up a little bit more. I just think it's trended down a little bit the last week to 10 days. Still, I don't think he's been like brutal or anything like that with Crystal Tang, but I still think he, we've seen it better. Like you mentioned the Anaheim game.
Starting point is 00:19:13 You mentioned earlier in the season. He can get back to that. I do think so. It's just that he's been trending a little bit down over the last week to 10 days. So something to at least monitor just because he's never really played this many top four minutes in the NHL before. just with a full season. But Pat, I think that's going to do it for this second segment. Coming up in the final segment,
Starting point is 00:19:32 we're going to discuss Archer Shiloh's getting to start tonight for Tristan Jari. And also, Harrison Brunich, going to the World Juniors. We're going to discuss both of those things right after this. But before we do that, we have to tell you all about our final sponsor, which is game time. The World Cup is coming back to North America for the first time since 1994. And with 48 teams for the first time ever, It's going to be massive.
Starting point is 00:19:57 But let's be honest, getting tickets is usually the hardest part. That's why the game time app is clutch, finally giving fans a real advantage when it comes to snagging seats. With game time, you can track price drops in real time, get alerts when great seats open, and buy tickets the moment they hit the app. It puts the power back in your hands and makes going to the World Cup realistic instead of impossible.
Starting point is 00:20:17 You put the app in the layout makes it so simple to scroll through matchups and compare seat views. Pick a game, tap a section, and have your tickets locked in within minutes. no confusion no hunting for fine print the seat view future is a game changer you literally see what the pitch looks like from your exact seat right before you buy the tickets take the guestwork out of buying world cup tickets in every match concert or event with game time down the game time app grain account and use code locked on NHL for $20 off your first purchase terms of why again
Starting point is 00:20:48 download the app make an account and use the code locked on NHL for $20 off swipe tap ticket game time. All right, we're back here on this episode of the Locked-on Penguins podcast. I'm one of your host, Hunter Hodes, joined by my host, Patrick Damp and Pat. It'll be Archer She-Lovs, starting a net for the Penguins tonight. His first start since November 29th against the Toronto Maple Leafs, a game that he probably has tried to forget by now. It was probably his worst start of the season, gave up four goals.
Starting point is 00:21:21 Did not look confident from the start of the game, was swimming in his crease. that was his second really bad start in a row so he's going to get a chance to redeem himself here and why not honestly before these last two certs he had been really good him and trist in jari were forming a really nice 1a 1b situation i know jari has kind of run away a little bit with it since then as more the 1a or maybe if you want to say he's the true number one okay sure but she loves is going to get his chance to redeem himself here and they're going to give jari a night off you know i was a little surprised by it just because of how well Jari has been playing, but I also think at the same time,
Starting point is 00:21:57 Damuzes, doesn't want to run Jari to the ground and give him, you know, eight to 10 starts in a row at some point here in this month. He still wants to manage his workload. So, hey, we'll see how Shilov does. I get the reasoning. I'm just still a little nervous from those last two starts, but I'm willing to give him a shot to redeem himself just because before those two starts, Pat, he had been playing some really solid hockey for this team.
Starting point is 00:22:20 It does strike me as some load management. essentially you've seen Jari for quite a few games now and Jari has absolutely taken the starting job and ran with it. But it's also a redemption time for Archer Shilovs because this isn't going to be an easy game. We talked about it in the opening segment. There's a lot of really good offensive talent on this Ducks team. They score a lot of goals. They play a very up-tempo style. So this is a chance for Archer Shilovs to come out and show that he has rebounded, that he has recovered from a rough patch and that maybe he can claw his way back into making the platoon a thing again. And then I also look at the rest of the schedule for this homestand, and I think it actually
Starting point is 00:23:05 works out quite well in the favor of both Jari and Shilovs. You'll give understandably, and maybe depending upon how tonight goes, you'll give Jari the start against the Canadians. You can put Shilovs in against the San Jose Sharks, and then you can go Jari. back to back with the Utah mammoth on Sunday and then the Oilers on Tuesday and maybe if you know plays pretty well against the Oilers on Tuesday and they get a win maybe the Oilers start calling the Penguins a little bit more frequently to see if they can make something work but we will see how that goes but at the end of the day it really is an opportunity
Starting point is 00:23:47 for Artur Sheelovs to try to get that starting or not that starting job but the platoon plan back pat i just want to let you know you were doing the six seven meme there which was disturbing so please don't do that again thank you wasn't on purpose don't worry i didn't mean to do it it just happened we got to have a little bit of fun on this show uh i just when i saw you do that i'm like please please don't do that again but no it wasn't purposeful my bad But in all seriousness, you know, Stan Bowman, he'll be watching that game. So maybe he'll, if he's in Pittsburgh, go over to Kyle Dubus and be like, hey, maybe I'll up my offer for Tristan Jari if he gets the start and maybe, you know, gets a shout out against the Oilers or holds them to one goal, something like that. But again, Kyle Dubas is going to be very patient with something like this.
Starting point is 00:24:35 Nothing's imminent. Don't believe fake rumors or anything like that on the internet. But yeah, she laws getting to start tonight. I'm a little nervous again, but why not for? redeeming himself after these two really bad starts. Other thing I want to get too bad, it is official Harrison Brunick going to the World Juniors to represent Team Canada,
Starting point is 00:24:54 and this is the right move for him. I thought he played well in his five games, Stent in Wilkesbury. This is now the next step of his development. Kyle Dubas and DeMuse have both confirmed that Brunick will be playing for Team Canada when it starts towards the later stages of December and into early January,
Starting point is 00:25:09 and from there, they will make a decision on whether he will stay in the NHL for the rest of the season or if he will go back to Canloops. But I really like this move for someone who I thought was good at the start, then kind of tailed off. This is a nice development plan for him. He gets to play in very high stakes games,
Starting point is 00:25:27 represent his country, and then he'll come back, and then the Penguins have to make a decision. So I really like this one from them. It's a huge opportunity for him to kind of rebuild his stock. Because I don't think that the Penguins are suddenly down on him. I don't think that after his cup of coffee at the NHL level that they're suddenly worried that he's not going to turn out to be a very good NHL defenseman. Still think that very much is his future.
Starting point is 00:25:55 But you could kind of see he was maybe a half step too slow or a half step behind or just wasn't quite ready for the rigors of being an NHL regular defenseman. And that's fine. We say it all the time on the show. the development of defensemen takes a little bit longer than with a forward. So this gives him an opportunity to play at a level that is probably a little more consummate to where he is right now, rather than what he would be playing against at the NHL level. And if he goes out and dominates and is one of the better players, if not the best player on Team Canada, which is going to be so much talent around him,
Starting point is 00:26:37 I'd be shocked if he was the absolute best player on Canada. Have you seen that roster, buddy? Yeah, but if he is a key contributor for Team Canada at the World Juniors and you're the Penguins, you can maybe consider if he's going to get another shot this year with the Penguins. And the other thing to keep in mind, what we talk about in the second segment, this team forever and ever and ever and ever has an injury curse. So maybe the World Juniors happen, someone on defense gets hurt, and there's a chance for him to slot in if he has a good performance.
Starting point is 00:27:14 But this is just where we are in the Penguins organization and the Penguins history right now. Progress is not going to be linear. It's not all going to be Ben Kindle shows up and lights the world on fire and makes the team out of camp. It's going to be guys who look good for a couple weeks. They have a down period. They figure it out. They come back. It's going to take a little bit.
Starting point is 00:27:37 I know we're all excited. I know this season has been a success. to this point that nobody really had expected, but this is still going to be part of the Penguins rebuild and retool. Right. And this is a process with Brunich. Yeah, he was really good to start, tailed off after. That happens with young players.
Starting point is 00:27:55 He got the five games in Wilkesbury. He's going to get more high stakes game in games, excuse me, at the World Juniors, then they'll make a call. If they decided to send him back to Canloops, okay, they're better this year. If he plays well down there, he'll have another shot at being on this team full time next year. now if they want to keep him for the rest of the season, not send him back to Cam Loops, and he plays better after the World Junior's stint,
Starting point is 00:28:16 even better. So this is what development looks like, people. It's a process. So let it play out. That's why I have to say on that. And I think that's going to do it for today's episode of the Locked-on Penguins podcast. Thank you all so much for take the time to listen to slash watch this one.
Starting point is 00:28:31 Pat and I will be back with a fresh episode for you guys on Wednesday, recaping this game against the Ducks. And, of course, it's Warrior Helmet Wednesday, giving out our player. MVP award for the last week, or could be a coach, could be a special teams unit, could be anything regarding the Pittsburgh Penguins. But again, that will do it for this one. Thank you guys so much for tuning in.
Starting point is 00:28:51 We will be back on Wednesday.
