Starting point is 00:00:00 We are just one day away from the penguins beginning the regular season in Philadelphia, but before the puck drops, a lot has happened. We're going to talk about the candid Kyle Dubus press conference, the opening night roster, and so, so much more on the Tuesday edition of the Locked on Penguins podcast. You're Locked on Penguins, your daily podcast on the Pittsburgh Penguins, part of the Locked on Podcast Network. your team every day. Hello and welcome to the Tuesday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast.
Starting point is 00:00:42 I am one of your hosts, Patrick Damp. You can find me on most social media platforms at Synonym 4 Wet. Joined as always by the one and only Hunter Hodes. Also, of course, make sure you're subscribed across all audio platforms and YouTube because we are now in regular season mode. The Penguins, they open the season tomorrow in Philadelphia, and we will have our game preview episode up on early Wednesday morning.
Starting point is 00:01:30 then we will record a recap of the game right after on Wednesday night, and that will be available early on Thursday morning. However, before we get into any of that, we have a lot to talk about today on the Tuesday edition, and that's what we're going to do right now. Later on in the show, we made our Penguins Bold predictions on the Monday episode, so as we do right on regular season Eve for the Penguins every year, we're going to make our Stanley Cup picks.
Starting point is 00:01:59 We'll also get into the 23-man roster and what Hunter over there saw at Penguins practice today. But we will begin the show talking about Kyle Dubas' season opening press conference. And Hunter, I'll be completely candid here. That's the most blunt and honest I have seen Dubis since he took over the job. So let's begin where most people are going to want us to begin. and that was when Dubus was asked about the future of legendary penguin Evgeny Malkin. He said pretty bluntly, quote, I'm not going to do this day by day, year by year thing with Gino again this year. End quote.
Starting point is 00:02:43 I know this sent a lightning bolt through a lot of penguins fans, but I would like to calm some nerves first. In my reading, at least my opinion, this wasn't Dubis saying, I'm done with Malkin. He can leave at the end of the year, et cetera, et cetera. This was more or less him looking at everybody and saying, it's the same as last year. You don't have to ask me about this every single time I talk to you.
Starting point is 00:03:15 If he plays well and he looks like he can go another year, we'll have that discussion in the off season. But we're not going to do this thing where we're going to talk about Gino's future. every single time I get in front of a microphone. Right. And I understand that because it felt like last season he was asked 50,000 times, whether it was on the GM show or just whenever he spoke to the media, just like, oh, what's going on here?
Starting point is 00:03:46 What's going on here? So I think he probably just wanted to get ahead of it and be like, hey, we're not going to do this again this year. I don't think it really had a lot to do with like Gino himself. obviously he's very happy that they resigned him. You and I still think this is probably going to be his final season. I think he just wanted to say, I don't want to be asked about this. So I'm going to be pretty blunt here and just say, let's not talk about this throughout the year.
Starting point is 00:04:12 I'm sure, you know, if there needs to be a discussion about a potential extra year, he'll have those conversations with J.P. Berry, Gino's agent, and then Gino himself. But, you know, he doesn't want to be asked about it 50,000. thousand times. So at first, and I texted you, I was like, man, the way that he said it was weird, but then after thinking more on it, just felt like, okay, he wanted to just be blunt and say, we're not going to just be asking about this every single time. I talk with everyone. So, yeah, don't really have much else to say on that. The one other thing that he was really blunt on Pat, and I agree. That was the most direct I've heard Dubas talk about the Penguins since he took the job.
Starting point is 00:04:52 And like a lot of times with these GM press conferences, you get like a lot of filler quotes, like a lot of typical GM speak. But he was pretty blunt about the goaltender battle. Like he was asked about like, when did you know that it was going to be Sargay Marischoff over Yaw-Bloomquist? And he said, Pat, the H.L.
Starting point is 00:05:13 playoffs. I was like, damn. I'm like, way to say that after Y'all Blumquist had a pretty good camp. And I know he played a little bit in the preseason. But I did. didn't expect him to be that blunt about it, but, you know, as the kids like to say, that was a bar of a quote right there. Just the way that he said it, I was like, damn, didn't think he'd come out there and fully admit that. The two things I will say about that,
Starting point is 00:05:34 though, is one, I think that it was pretty obvious overall that if Mershov had a strong season and a strong playoff run with the baby penguins, it pretty much meant he was going to get the call to the NHL the following year. And that also became even clearer when they traded Tristan Jari for Stuart Skinner because at that point, if you just go strictly by contracts, they would have only had Archer. Not even Archer Shilov. He was also a pending RFA at the end of the year. Exactly. Realistically, once they made that move, that became even more clear. And then the other side of it. He also did say about Blumquist that the new format for training camp and preseason, and these were his words, screwed him. Yes. Because there were only four games. Camp was only about
Starting point is 00:06:29 a week and a half. And no, this doesn't mean that we can, should, or want there to be a three week, eight game preseason because that helps no one. There probably should be a bit of a middle ground, say like a two and a half week camp and maybe four or five preseason games instead. Because realistically, and this is going to be a little bit of an offshoot here, I'll get back on track quick in a sec. There are way more teams than there aren't that need a bit of an extended look at prospects, new players, young players, etc., etc. And when you're a team like Pittsburgh who brought in a bunch of NHL capable forwards,
Starting point is 00:07:14 has a bunch of prospects that are hoping to make the leap. 10 to 12 days and four preseason games probably isn't enough to get the right look, but as Dupas said, it's the world we live in. That said, to bring this all full circle, I do think Blumquist is on the same track as Sergey Murrishov was going into last year, where have a good camp, we're going to put you down in Wilkes-Bare, you're going to be the guy down there you're going to get lion's share the starts it's going as duba said it's going to be a good team in the a hl once again so if you can be a solid starter for them
Starting point is 00:07:54 play well in the postseason for them then next year they can decide to part ways with someone like she loves or trade him if they have to and there's your tandem going into next year so it is at the end of the day, really kind of a carbon copy of situations as we go from year to year. Yeah, I would agree with you on that. I think, you know, with Y'all Blumenquist and Dubus even said that during the presser. Like he's going to go down there. He's going to be the starter. Taylor Godier is going to push him. He talked about how Godier is going to be the backup in Wilkesbury this year, which is going to be great as well. And Blumquist, he'll have an opportunity to really run with this thing down there. Get the lion's share of the starts. Have a similar season,
Starting point is 00:08:38 like numbers-wise to last year, but with more starts. And then he'll be the guy in the playoffs. And then from then on, Pat, time will tell what happens to him if he potentially can make the team next year. We also have to see what happens with R.D. She-Lves because they re-signed him for this upcoming season. But it's still a big year for him because he needs to be more consistent. We expect that Sergei Muroshael will be on the team next year.
Starting point is 00:09:01 But this will be a big season in the AHL for Blumquist. And as I've said, this isn't the last you've heard of him. I think he's going to get some starts. in the NHL this season, whether it's by injury or whether it's by some really strong play, that's to be determined. But I do think he's going to get at least a small handful of starts in NHL. A couple other things before we get out of here for this first segment. Obviously, he said the Penguins have no plans to take a step back this year.
Starting point is 00:09:26 Water is wet. He said their goal is to really try and chase down Carolina just because top team in the Metro, they won the Stanley Cup. And this was a money quote for me. He was asked about acquiring more younger talent, and he said, every single player of that nature in the early to mid-20s pat that becomes available, regardless of their profile, we are going to call and we are going to be involved. And I like hearing that. You should be involved in every single one of those discussions. Now, whether you can actually pull off one of those deals, that's to be determined.
Starting point is 00:09:58 We know that they're going to keep trying to. But that was refreshing to hear that they're going to keep going after those big difference-making early to mid-20s players. become available. It's just again, Pat, all the teams are probably going to be also going after those players. They are. And I do think that there's a connective tissue in what you just said with something else that Dubis talked about in the press conference. And that's related to the young players where he first said the obvious, which another water is wet moment is the development for a lot of these guys isn't linear. It's going to, it's going to go in a bunch of different directions. And that also brought it to guys like Rutger McGroherty and a few others where Dubas said that they're going
Starting point is 00:10:41 to have to start at the bottom of the lineup in the NHL when they're here and they're going to have to work their way up and they're going to have to earn their place in the franchise and in the club. And then he also said that with the number of younger players that they do have in the system that are going to be in the AHL and even some in the ECHL, the competition hopefully should provide motivation for them to earn it and for them to get better. So I think that all connects together because we know that they still don't have, save for maybe Sergey Mureshov, that blue chip top tier prospect.
Starting point is 00:11:22 Right. But if these guys continue to get better, continue to develop, continue to compete, and you want to go after those younger players, which they do, you can use of these guys who are developing to hopefully go get that younger player because some of those that become available will either be from teams that are getting out of their contention window and are starting to make moves or teams that are at the top of the contention window and are looking to shed salary or go after a bigger fish. So some guys might get boxed out or priced out, I should say.
Starting point is 00:12:01 So the thing is this is going to take a bunch of different routes over the next few years. And to put a fine point on this segment, it is going to go back to a question that your hockey news colleague Kelsey Sermats referenced at the press conference. There are a lot of parts of it that are going to be brick by boring brick. So we do have to, we do have to strap in for that. But overall, came away feeling pretty encouraged. He was very blunt. He was very obvious. For the people who are asking, what is the plan?
Starting point is 00:12:37 Just go back and watch and you will know what the plan is. It's pretty obvious. They're going to try to run both tracks of being competitive, compiling young talent, and draft capital so they can go whichever direction they want to go. Yeah, that was a big thing as well. He seemed pretty like, talk about like some big bold decisions. think he's prepared, Pat, if this season goes south, I think he's going to be prepared to make some decisions that may annoy part of the fan base,
Starting point is 00:13:05 but I think will be good for the long run. So he'll be ready for it. 100%, 100%, but it all gets started for real tomorrow. We know who's going to be on the roster. So we are going to talk about the 23-man roster when we come back right after this. The easiest dinner isn't always the one that comes through a drive-thru. Sometimes it's knowing you've already got incredible protein sitting in your freezer. That's exactly why Butcher Box has become part of my routine.
Starting point is 00:13:37 Butcher Box delivers 100% grass-fad beef, organic chicken, walk-hot seafood, and more. All source the standards they can actually tell you about. They've already done the research and made the tough sourcing decisions. So all you have to do is decide what's for dinner. And for me, it's super easy. All have to this place in order, get the protein when it's on my front porch, got to put in the freezer. And then, like this Alaskan cod, just pull it out and I make it. And I got great meals already ready to get.
Starting point is 00:14:00 and it's super easy. If you're looking for an easier way to get great meals on the table, give Butcher Box a try. Starting point is 00:14:20 Be issued you to use our links so they know we sent you. Back here on the Tuesday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast, Patrick Damp and Hunter Hodes here with you. And yes, neither Hunter nor myself made the Penguins 23 man roster. I know big shock there. However, right before Kyle Dubus did speak on Monday, the Penguins released their opening night roster. And no real surprises, if any at all,
Starting point is 00:14:50 considering where this camp ended up. But the Penguins lead the league right now going into the opening night with 10 players on either injured reserve, non-roster injured, and non-roster. They include on injured reserve, Brazil, Graves, Kindle, Lazot, and Rust. On injured non-roster, Tristan Brose, Melvin Firmstrom, Oliver Oculey and Gabriel Deg. Obviously, Kuzmenko is non-raster as he is still in Russia following the tragic death of his father. However, some names that did make the team out of camp, David Gustafson, Philip Hollander, Hendrik Flapier, and Rutger Magrorty. Now, we're going to do our preview
Starting point is 00:15:41 episode for the game tomorrow, but Hunter, this season begins with a big challenge. Four of the five players on IR to start the season can and have played big roles for the penguins. So those guys that I just, said that made the team, they are going to have to step up for, at the very least, the first week of the season. Yeah, you also forgot Billy Coyvin in there, Pat, because by all indications, he is going to be in the starting lineup in Philadelphia on Wednesday, back where it all ended after last season, where we all know what happened in game six of that first round series.
Starting point is 00:16:16 But he's going to have to be big for the first week or two of the season. You brought up a lot of year at the third line center, I agree. Philip Hollander, Rucker McGrody looks like a healthy scratch right now. but he is still very much practicing with the team. We have been getting it looks like a little bit of good news. Blake Lazot returned to practice on Monday. Full participant was the same today. I was there.
Starting point is 00:16:39 Was in his usual spot on the fourth line with Connor Dewar and Elmer Sotom. So that's all looking good. And he was also in his usual spot on the penalty kill. Damme was talked after practice how full participant, but they still got to talk and have some discussions about whether he can play on Wednesday. Personally, I would be a little surprised if he does not play. I think he is going to be cleared and he will be good to go on Wednesday, which would be a huge boost to the lineup, especially the bottom six. He is a really big difference maker on the fourth line and on the penalty kill.
Starting point is 00:17:08 So that would be some really good news. Otherwise, Pat, no other surprises. They also don't have to make a roster move because the roster is at 22 players right now. You activate Lazot, that's 23. Anyone else that gets activated and these players will get activated, you'll have to make a corresponding move, putting someone on waivers, sending someone back down to Wilkesbury, all that good stuff. Otherwise, no real surprises, especially after how many injuries they have, which is, again, ridiculous. And then if anyone's wondering, Andre Kuzmenko, not practiced today, still in Russia. I mean, you and I talked about this a lot, Pat.
Starting point is 00:17:41 He can take obviously all the time that he needs considering the tragic death of his father. Just, again, horrible, horrible stuff. And Dubus reiterated that at his press conference, basically saying they're not putting a timeline or timetable on Kuzmenko. He can stay with his family as long as he needs as they need to grieve after that, after that awful, awful tragedy. But the big thing that's that's standing out to me, one is the obvious that you just brought up. It's good news that Blake Lazot looks like he's well on track to be ready to go for the opening game because he was and has been huge in the penguin's bottom six.
Starting point is 00:18:23 He's everything that we have asked him to be since he was acquired, and now that he has since been extended by the penguins. Here's the biggest thing that I want to see tomorrow night. And I'm not going to put one game of pressure on him to determine it, but I want to see a good start from Vela Kovina. It doesn't mean how to rack up the points. It doesn't mean he's got to suddenly become a game changer in one of 84. but it would quell a lot of concern if he has a big start,
Starting point is 00:18:59 if he has a solid start to his season just to show everyone, hey, this is a process, it's going to take a while, it's not going to happen overnight, but he needs to have a solid, solid first game. And then the other thing is a lot of these names that we brought up that are going to be in the opening night lineup, your Gustafs, your Hollanders, your La Piers, it connects to something Kyle Dubus said on Monday.
Starting point is 00:19:30 The competition is now more so than ever there, because these guys, due to injury, get a spot with the big club on opening night. Right. And a good few of them are going to be out for a while. Brazo, Rust, Kendall, they might be out for a couple of weeks because they are still designated week to week. So you're going to get a runway.
Starting point is 00:19:53 You're going to get a few games. You're going to get Wednesday night. You're going to get Saturday at home. You're going to get quite a couple other games. So there are a lot of us, including you and I, who are wincing a little bit when you see all these injuries and thinking, it could be a tough start to the season. But if these guys come in and perform well,
Starting point is 00:20:16 it not only helps the franchise's case, helps their case as well. Right. And I think it's the biggest concern that some people have when it comes to the start of the season is, how are you going to overcome all these injuries that happened during camp in the preseason? Because, you know, a bad start, that can really doom you for the rest of the season. Like, especially if you go like, I don't know, 4-8-1, 4-9 and 2, something like that. You're really behind the 8-ball for the rest of the season, even with a couple of extra games now added to the schedule going forward.
Starting point is 00:20:48 So a good start, even with the injuries, I know, breaking news here, Pat, just very paramount to their success. Like something similar to last year, for example, remember 8-2-2? Maybe not even like that, for example. If you can go 6-4-2, 5-5-2, you know, even like 5-4-1 through 10 games, for example, you know, just got to stay in it until some of these other players can. and get back. And I do think they will, but just again, slow start. You'll be up a creek way too quickly. You can't win the Stanley Cup in September and October. And this is, this is really a big cliche, but you can all, you can lose it. You can have a tough start that's hard to recover from. So yeah, you can't make the playoffs now, but you can definitely put your chances well behind the eight
Starting point is 00:21:44 ball to say the least. Exactly. One last thing to hit talking about the, the roster and everything is we brought it up in the first segment that the goaltending tandem is going to be Sergei Murashov and Artur Sheelovs. I do want to highlight Dan Mews's comments today about the goaltending situation where he didn't totally commit to doing the same thing he did last year with the goaltending where it was a rotating 1A, 1B kind of deal. And I'll say this much. I do think overall that's how the season is going to begin.
Starting point is 00:22:20 I do think it'll probably be rotating starts every game. Murshov will get one, Shilov will get one, so on and so on. But I do think with Mews' comments, he is kind of hinting at the fact that this year he might have a little bit more willingness to ride the hot hand than to commit to a goaltending by committee, especially because if Sergey Maryshov or Archer Sheelovs, both, it applies to both of them, go on a heater, that'll help their development, it'll help their confidence, and it'll help the team. So I do think this year, rather than committing to a goaltender by committee right out of
Starting point is 00:23:04 the gate, is probably the best way to go about it. Yeah, I still think by the end of the season, I'm going to say this right now, I could be dead wrong on this. I think it's going to be about a 60, 40 split in favor of she loves for this season. Maybe it could be down to 55, 45, 45. You know, I think the days are gone when someone's going to get like 60 plus starts. Like, Arte's not that type of goalie. Yeah, the only guy who we're going to see do that anymore pretty much is Shastarkin and Bobrovsky.
Starting point is 00:23:31 Other than that, there's going to be. Bob, I would say like Vasilevsky. Vasilevsky too. Yeah, like him. I agree Shastarkin. If Hala Buck were playing, maybe well, not even. this year because Stuart Skinner is also their other goalies. I don't know if they would do that this year, but Helibuck's not playing.
Starting point is 00:23:46 He's suspended by the Jets. But yeah, I think by the end it's going to be 6040, but back in change, especially if Murashav does go on a heater. And I know we don't have the lineup yet for Wednesday, Pat. I would expect Sheelovs to get the net for the first game, though. So we'll see. As would I, I think that Mudes, good of a coach as he is, probably understands she loves once another whack.
Starting point is 00:24:12 at the Philadelphia Flyers after the way that series ended. So probably the guy that you're going to want to go with. And it would probably go a long way in the eyes of the fans to maybe give Sergey Murashov the home opener. But that's a discussion for later on in the week. So we'll table that there. But that is going to do it for this middle segment. When we come back, you got to do our yearly tradition here.
Starting point is 00:24:39 Season starts as we record this in about two hours. So we got to make our picks for who we think is going to win the Stanley Cup. Stay with us. We're going to do that when we come back right after this. Finishing up the Tuesday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast, Patrick Damp and Hunter Hodes here. And it is time for us to break out our crystal balls and try to look into the future. As we do on the eve of every penguin season, we look all the way. ahead to June and make our Stanley Cup predictions. Hunter, know this one for me might be a bit of a
Starting point is 00:25:26 hot take, but I am not picking the Pittsburgh Penguins to make the Stanley Cup final and win the Stanley Cup, though I would not be upset if I was wrong about that. But I just can't do it in the preseason. That said, I'm going to let you go first, but I want to preface you in your picks by saying this. I have two different picks, one that I want to happen and one that I think is going to happen. So Hunter, kick us off. Who are you taking to play in the 2027 Stanley Cup final and who wins it and why? All right. So real quick, I'm going to do my playoff team predictions. I want to go lightning fast here. Atlantic, I have Florida, Tampa Bay, Montreal as the top three, pretty standard. Florida's coming back with a vengeance to Cedar. Stay tuned for that.
Starting point is 00:26:19 Metro, Carolina, Washington, and I am taking Pittsburgh to make the playoffs. It's a bit of a home or pick. I know, but I also think they have as good of a chance to get that third spot as any other team in the Metro. I am not sold on a lot of these other teams. I can see some of these teams getting it, but I'm not fully confident in it. Wildcard, Buffalo, and Ottawa, I think those will be the two wildcar teams. From the West, Colorado, Dallas, Minnesota, in the central, very standard, Vegas, Edmonton, Anaheim in the Pacific, Utah, and give me San Jose to make the playoffs this year. It's a little bit of a bold prediction, but we've got to get a little bit bold.
Starting point is 00:26:53 Stanley Cup final, here we go. Florida gets it in from the east. I think they are coming back with a full vengeance, and I think they are going to be insanely tough to beat. I think their goaltending will do enough because it is a valid concern. They do not have Bob anymore, and their goalies can be a little bit shaky. But I think if they just get average goaltending, they will. go through to the final and I think they will meet the Colorado Avalanche and I will take the
Starting point is 00:27:19 Aves to win the Stanley Cup. I know boring pick. I could have gone with some other teams but I like both of these teams heading into the season quite a bit and I'm going to take Colorado. I can't wait for this to be wrong. I like a lot of that. I do. I like quite a lot of that. So let me get into what I'm going to do. I'm going to first go with the Stanley Cup final that I want to see, though I don't think I will get to see it. Coming out of the east is the other Florida team, the Tampa Bay Lightning. Okay. I think that we're constantly forgetting about them, the high-end talent that they have,
Starting point is 00:27:59 they still have Vasilevsky, who is still one of the best goaltenders on the planet. And I know that it annoyed all of us here in Pittsburgh, but John Cooper is one of, if not the best coach in National Hockey League, that is worth quite a bit. Coming out of the West, for me, it's the same team that you said, Hunter, the Colorado Avalanche. Love it. I think with that team, they're going to take a step back, but I do think that when you have a psychopath like Nathan McKinnon as your leader, and last season went the way it did, injuries despite being the reason, he is going to be absolutely on another level and I feel like that team does not get talked about.
Starting point is 00:28:43 That is the Stanley Cup final that I want and if that one happens, give Nate and his cohorts another Stanley Cup championship. The one that I think is probably going to happen though. We're going to get round three. The Florida Panthers and the Edmonton Oilers. You're buying into Mike Babcock, huh? I am not buying into Mike Babcock. I'm buying into Connor McDavid and Leon Dry Sightle more than I am against age.
Starting point is 00:29:13 I don't think I know that this is going to be a storyline and I'm not getting into the storyline of Babcock. If you don't know what I think of Babcock, I think you can probably figure it out. But I think with that team, their problems are so much less than coaching. Everyone will blame coaches. That team doesn't have a coaching problem. It has a management problem. and they can't build a good enough roster around two of the greatest players on the planet. But two of those players are cheat codes.
Starting point is 00:29:43 And if they get passable goaltending, passable defense with how weak the Pacific is, they've got as good a shot as anybody to make it through. So I do think in that scenario, Florida, the ultimate villains, get another Stanley Cup and we're all mad about it. because that team, it got better. And much like I said about Edmonton, yes, their goaltending is suspect after losing a guy like Bobrovsky. But at the end of the day, they play a style that wears everybody down. It is hard to keep up with.
Starting point is 00:30:23 And you put them in a seven game series. It is the old saying of, we are not locked in here with them. They are locked in here. with us. So I hope for my Tampa Colorado final, but I just can't shake the idea that we're going to get another Florida Edmonton final. I mean, I can see it because I do, I do think Florida, I think they're going to remind a lot of people that they're back. They got the Brady Kachuk trade. The biggest thing, though, for me is that Shasha Barkov is back. Like the fact that Barkov missed the entirety of last season, just completely screwed them over. So I can't wait for a Sasha.
Starting point is 00:31:04 I'm in because he is so great as a two-way center, the best two-way center we have in today's game. And I think they're going to win the East. I do want to see seven games, though, between them and Carolina. And I think that game later today, depending on when you're listening to this, is probably going to get a bit nasty because, I don't know, like, I feel like from Florida's perspective, like, they saw what Carolina did. And I think they're going to be like, hmm, you didn't have to go through us last year. Well, this year, you're going to have to go through us if you want to win it.
Starting point is 00:31:32 So again, I'm excited for that. I'm excited for the full season. We are back. Toronto, Montreal is also tonight if you want to watch that on SportsNet. You have ESPN Plus subscription. You have Boston, New York, if I recall correctly, as well, Pat. Edmonton, Vancouver is also tonight. And then Chicago and Vegas is also tonight as well.
Starting point is 00:31:52 And, of course, Carolina raises their banner against Florida today. And that's going to be great. So hockey's back. We're all excited. And tomorrow we have our first preview of the season. That'll be up in the morning. We'll preview the game against the flyers. Talk about who you should look out for,
Starting point is 00:32:08 the starting goaltender, keys to victory, all of that. We've made it and we're really excited. Hockey is back, folks. I said it at the top of the show. Make sure you're following us on social media. Make sure you're subscribed to the show
