I crushed the Penguins for their effort
on Friday. I did not like the way they played.
I thought it was unacceptable. And
what did they do on Sunday? They
fully reversed course and they came
out like a pissed off team
in the first grade. It was exactly what I
wanted to see. If you start that
game bright and early on Sunday morning, 9 a.m.
Eastern time, they get three
in the first period. Parker Watherspoon gets one. I thought it was deflected by
Denton Hinen Hinen, but they gave it to Wothera Spoon. Nice seeing eye shot.
Evgeny Malkin found out that the bank was open in Sweden because he got another
gold that banked off Sorosan Inn. And then Cindy Crosby, man, what a release that was.
And really quickly, I was like, yeah, this is a team that is playing pissed off after the way
they played on Friday. And did their level dip a little bit for the final 40 minutes?
sure, but it never got to a level where I was really concerned, especially because Nashville has
been one of the worst offensive teams in the league. And yes, I know the penguins have blown
multiple three goal leads already this season. But in the back of my head, I was like,
this one feels different just because I don't think the predators have the horses to come back
with the way they have played this year, with the amount of goals they have scored. Again,
not many just because they're not good offensively. So I always thought that penguins had this one in
the bag. And they kind of just had the Predators in a chokehold. Yeah, the Predators pushed back
ever so slightly. But whenever they did, Sergei Muroshov was always right there. And honestly,
Pat, let's talk about him to start. We'll get to the overall performance in a second because I do
want to discuss that. Sergei Moroshov gets his first NHL win and NHL shutout in just his second
career start. And this game, I think, is a perfect example as to why there is so much hype surrounding him.
look how calm he was in net look at the agility look at how he positions himself in net everything
comes so easy to him and i know it's only hit the second start but his talent was very much on display
in this one and there's a reason why so many people including us on the show are super excited
about his potential long-term future he was excellent his agility especially was amazing going from left to
right robbing a couple of one timers was also really good again i thought he was perfect in this one
he was really really good against nashville on sunday morning and before i get into it i have
just been bursting at the seams to say this what a happy victory monday it is for pittsberg the
penguins they get three of four points in sweden the steelers get back in the wind column and
and stay atop the AFC North.
And guess what else?
Your Pittsburgh Riverhounds, baby, are going to the U.S.L finals.
It is a beautiful victory Monday here in our Fair City.
But back to Murashav.
Unbelievable performance.
And I don't want to overstate it because you said this about the overall performance.
And I agree with it after rewatching a lot of the game on Sunday afternoon,
after it was completed.
The Penguins really did put the Nashville Predators in a sleeper hold for the final two periods.
There was some pushback as expected because it's still an NHL team.
It's still an NHL game.
You're going to have that.
But there were not a lot of grade A opportunities for Nashville.
But when they got their looks, Sergey Murashav was right there.
And he made a lot of saves look just absolutely routine.
His side-to-side movement is damn near perfect, and he is just a calm, poised goaltender for a 21-year-old to get called into action the way he was, because you know that this organization has told him they want him to be the starter for Wilkes-Bare for this year and really own that job, and then going into next year, barring any other circumstances, he will have an opportunity.
to play in the NHL, but to come up under these circumstances to play in a very odd
atmosphere in an international game and to just make it look routine, it says a lot about
his potential and his maturity at 21 years old.
100%.
The moment never really looked too big for him.
And it's funny, second career start comes overseas.
This is a game that the penguins really need to have, considering that they were on that
slide. They pissed away that game late on Friday. And did they deserve to win it? No, but they were
still trying to hold on through dear life and get that survive in advance situation. And then they
went out there and dominated today. And let's get into that here, Pat. It was exactly what I
wanted. You and I touched on this during the preview on Friday. We said, we wanted them to go
out there looking pissed off and punched them right back after the way that game ended,
the tying goal, and then the game winning goal. Eventually, you have to play a
with pride. And we got all of that today against the Predators. It was the exact bounce back
that I wanted to see from this team. And in totality, I know they did not play well on Friday,
and I went at them pretty hard for it. You didn't go as hard as I did, but that's okay. But when
you look at the weekend, three out of four points, despite how poor Friday was, and I'm not
taking anything I said back, three out of four points, I will take it, considering the
amount of injuries that this team does have.
And the schedule is continuing to get softer.
You're also going to have five more days off.
This team doesn't play again until this upcoming Friday.
So three out of four points at the end could have been four,
though also could have been only two.
I'll still take it.
Yeah.
You can't get, I don't think, too frustrated with the overall result now that we know it.
You get three of four in the international games.
You're now in sole possession of third in the Metropolitan Division,
and you're only a couple of points off second and only a couple points off the lead in the division.
And this is how I'll go about looking at this, right?
Is the Friday game, unacceptable effort, but you somehow get a point out of it.
And then on Sunday, you respond in kind after a bad effort.
And this team still has a lot of interest.
injuries, it still has plenty of flaws, but they are finding ways to win games. They're finding
ways to keep themselves in the fight. And that gets back to what we talked about at the
beginning of the season before anything even began. We talked about this in training camp,
in the preseason, in the lead up to the regular season. We didn't have high expectations
for this team. And we still don't because it's still a team that is in transition. It's still a team
that is trying to figure out where it's going.
Are they going to push along some of these younger players
and put them into the NHL?
Or are they going to still have to wait for them to develop
and look for their next franchise player?
That is all still to be determined.
But at the end of the day,
all we wanted out of them was to play somewhat meaningful hockey,
to stay in the fight,
to be able to hang in games.
If you end up a below 500 team or you just lose more than you win,
but you're in just about every game,
that's about what we expected and wanted from this team.
And that's what they're doing in the added bonus is that you have players like
Ben Kindle and Sergey Murashav and a couple of the UFA signings,
turning out to be a lot better than anybody expected,
and you're getting wins on top of it.
So as annoyed as I am at the way they played in the first,
game in Sweden, they showed us a lot of who they are by having such a good response on
Sunday and getting a 4-0 win after sleepwalking through basically the entire game on Friday.
It was a mature response.
It was exactly what I wanted to see.
Sooner later, you had to put aside everything and play for pride and punch back.
And they did both of those things in this game.
They weren't going to have it from anyone.
they somehow did not get a single power play during this game,
which was crazy.
I mean, hey, I watched that entire game.
I saw a bunch of infractions on Nashville just flat out not called
and some tickey, tacky stuff called on the Penguins.
It was funny.
There was a Nashville Predators reporter on Twitter complaining about
Pat Crosby's little crosscheck where he was smiling.
I'm like, there's really, you can't complain about that
when the Penguins didn't have any power plays.
And I also see that go uncalled a hundred times a game.
It's just, that's the main point.
And I don't agree that it should go uncalled as much as it does.
It's the textbook definition of cross-checking, but that does go uncalled hundreds of times throughout a week in the NHL.
And would I like it to be different?
Sure, I would love, I have said it a million times that everyone who hits you with the straw man of,
oh, you want them to just call everything?
Yes, yes, I do.
Because if you are of a similar age to me,
you remember the first season after the 04 lockout
when they changed the rules.
First couple weeks of the season were pretty brutal
because they called everything.
But then you know what happened?
The players adjusted.
They changed the way they played.
And we all survived.
But that's not the reality we live in.
That stuff goes uncalled.
Is it a little bit of a doofist move?
by Cid, of course it is. But when you know how the game's called, you do that to your advantage.
And he was smiling while doing it, which was, I think, the cherry on top and made a lot of
Nashville fans and that tweet that I saw on Twitter, that reporter very upset. So, hey, I'll take it.
But I think that's going to do it for this first segment. Coming up in the second segment,
Pat and I are going to discuss a few more really strong individual performances, including one
from Blake Lazot, who I felt like played his best game of the season. That's coming up right after
this.
But before we get to that, we have to tell you all about our first sponsor, which is
game time.
Hockey season is officially here, and nothing beats being in the arena for those opening
games.
But let's be real, getting tickets can be a total headache between waiting in cues, surprise
fees, and prizes that jump right before checkout.
It is easy to get frustrated with all you want to do is cheer on your team.
That's where game time comes in.
The ad bit gives fans the advantage.
It's your ultimate life hack for scoring amazing NHL
tickets fast, easy, and stress-free.
I recently used GameTime to grab seats for one of the rushed concerts, and it could not have
been simpler.
I had great seats in minutes.
I love that what you see is what you pay, no hidden fees at checkout.
Plus, I could see exactly what my view looked like before I bought the tickets with their
in-app C-view feature.
Their zone deals also are a massive game changer.
You pick the section, Game Time picks your seats, and you save big.
You can even find NHL tickets on there for under $25.
Take the guesswork out of buying NHL tickets with GameTime,
down the GameTime app, create an account and use code locked on NHL for $20 off your first purchase.
Turns apply.
That's code Locked on NHL for $20 off.
Swipe, tap, ticket, go.
All right, we're back here on this episode of the Locked On Penguins podcast.
I'm one of your host, Hunter Hodes.
That's my co-s, Patrick Damp.
And, Pat, we've got to start out with Blake Lazot, by far his best game of the season for me.
I've always liked him as a fourth liner on the Penguins.
I don't think he gets enough credit from some of the fans with usually how consistent he is game to game.
He does a lot of things that you just really don't notice.
But today, you really notice him, especially on the penalty kills.
He was a menace on the PK against Nashville's power play.
And he was getting his sticks and shooting league.
being physical along the boards for checking his tail off below the net and he was great
in all three zones even outside of the PK but he was the straw that stirred the drink
on that unit all game long and then he ended the game with the goal you look at some of the
underlines for five on five for Lazotte today when he was on ice the penguin said
67% of the expected goals 66% of the scoring chances at five on five he was awesome today
and I loved his game he is a great
hockey sicko kind of player. And if you are seeking out a hockey podcast, you are absolutely in that
group. He's not the flashiest of players. He doesn't put up the big numbers. He gets rewarded at the end of the
game for being so good defensively today by scoring the empty net goal. But you're right. He was not
only really good on the PK, but the thing that I noticed and continue to notice about
Lizotte's game, especially on the penalty kill, is how smart his game is on the PK.
Because it's really easy, and I say this a lot, that the best trait that you can have as a
penalty killer is effort. Everything else can kind of be secondary if you're willing to go out
there and work and work your tail off on a penalty kill.
I will take that over so many other things,
but he's always smart in when to press and when to pull back.
And if you looked at his decision making when he was on the ice short-handed,
he was making the correct reads of,
okay, if I pressure this guy,
it's going to lead him into a bad decision,
a turnover, an opportunity to clear the puck.
And everything else about his game today,
I really, really liked because it,
was just what you want out of a fourth line center where you would love to see him chip in a
little bit more more than just an empty net goal but at that point you're nitpicking but really
good on the forecheck physical and it gives you confidence that you can roll out your fourth line
and they won't be a liability you can give your top guns a little bit of a rest let them
recover and then you can set the table for them to come out and have a strong shift to build on
and whatever line lazotte has been on this year to this point has been doing that they have
been having good energy shifts they have been possessing the puck well they have been wearing
down opponents to where when crosbie or malkins line come over the boards they've got a tired
unit to attack and it's really just the tip of the iceberg for me that
that this Penguins team this year is playing complimentary hockey.
Right.
And the best part about this is, you know,
Connor Dewar was up on the top line today just because
Vili Coivident is now the latest Penguins player to get injured
as the Penguins injury curse continues to know no bounds.
And he did all of this today on the fourth line without him.
Usually Dewar and Lazot do a great job feeding off each other on the fourth line.
And it's another reason why I'm really excited for this team to hopefully get healthy soon
because I want those two to get reunited,
want some of the top six players come back
like Justin Brzeau,
Ricard, Raquelie Coifton, and Hell,
Rucker McGroody might be up there at some point.
He got his first goal of the Wilkesbury season
over the weekend.
Really nice goal, by the way,
for Wilkesbury,
and just awesome to see him back playing.
But again, for Lazot,
it's just his hockey sense
combined with his forechecking ability.
The same thing with Connor Dewar's forechecking ability,
it makes for a line that
it's hard to plan against honestly just because those two guys are coming at you
it feels like a hundred plus miles an hour along the boards and you know they create
turnovers below the goal line they start cycling and then they pin you deep in the
offensive and their other teams opposing zone excuse me and was always to me was doing all
of that today even without doer on his line on the pk making the right reads pinning players
to the boards being physical just an absolute maniac
on the forecheck and then as I said he got rewarded later on with the empty net I really loved
his game today and honestly through the entire season so far that he's been healthy I think his
game has gone a little under the radar so I really just wanted to shout him out especially
for this effort because I felt like he was one of the penguins best players one more though
I've actually thought Ryan Graves was fairly solid today and since coming back up I'm going to say
it right here I don't think he's really been bad the bar is obviously on the
floor here people. He needs to do a lot to even come close to somehow winning me over. But he has
at least been serviceable since coming up from Wilkesbury. I think he laid the biggest hit
I've ever seen him lay today on a Predators player. And they got very mad about that hit,
by the way. I don't know why. Clean hit along the board's most physical hit I've seen from Ryan Graves
since he became a penguin. It's Groundhog Day on the locked on Penguins podcast when it comes to
Ryan Graves, because this is what I said about him last season, is it has to start
somewhere.
There has to be building blocks.
And like you said, since he has returned, he has continued to turn in solid performance
after solid performance.
And are they earth shattering?
Not really, but he's not making the same mistakes he made for two seasons.
He's not out of position.
if at all rarely is he and the biggest thing we have wanted to see from him is to use his size.
He is a massive player and if you're not going to contribute offensively from the blue line,
which he hasn't in his penguin's tenure, you've got to bring something to the table.
You've got to be either good in front of the net or you got to bring a physical presence.
and he has been doing that since he came back from Wokes Bear.
And again, bar is very low, but he's building off of solid performances.
And right now, the only goal for him is to not be a liability.
In a couple of weeks, if he continues to bring in these solid performances, then the floor has to be raised.
We have to start seeing a little more.
Either he's got to up the physical game a little bit, or he's got to contribute a little bit
offensively. But so far, since he's come up, zero complaints for me. It's, it's,
it's all you can ask for, honestly. Like, we've complained so much about this player ever since
he became a penguin just because he wasn't doing anything right. Since coming back up from
Wilkesbury, he hasn't done anything wrong. And someone like that is at its best when I'm not
really noticing him in a bad way, of course. So he had the hit today. Otherwise, I'm not really
noticing him. That's a good thing. That means he's been serviceable on the bottom pairing,
whether it's playing with Matt Dumbah or Connor Clifton. So I'll take it, man. I thought this was
since coming up, I thought this was his best game. It was. And again, we will continue to monitor
it, but keep turning in these performances. And then we will begin to start to raise the bar.
It has to be, okay, you have been serviceable for a couple of weeks, which that's the starting point.
The way he has performed since becoming a penguin, that you can't expect it to go from zero to 100.
He can't turn back into the guy he was with New Jersey or Colorado overnight.
But if he continues to play well, if he continues to be consistent, it's also going to hopefully get better because with consistent performances,
breeds confidence.
The more confidence he has, the better he's going to play.
Obviously, that's getting very far ahead of ourselves here.
But right now, in this moment, the way he's playing,
I again have zero complaints with the way he's played.
Well, he's certainly playing with a little bit of confidence right now.
Right.
Again, that hit today.
I haven't really seen him do that as a member of the Penguins.
So Ryan, keep it up.
You're one of the biggest players on the team.
You can be physical if you want to.
I don't want that to be your entire game.
game. I want other things, of course, to come out. But, hey, this is at least a step in the right direction from what we've seen since he's come up from Wilkesbury.
But I think that I'll do it for the second segment. Coming up in the final segment,
Pat and I're going to look at the week ahead for the penguins and why there is a real opportunity ahead here for the penguins to continue banking some points in the standings.
That's coming up right after this.
But before we get to that, we have to tell you all about our final sponsor, which is Fandulvi.
The NBA is back, and there is no better place to get in on the action than Fandall,
the official sports betting partner of the NBA.
Even if you missed the start of the game or want to ride the hot hand,

All right, we're back here on this episode of the Locktime Penguins podcast.
I'm one of your host, Hunter Hodes.
That's my co-host, Patrick Damp, and Pat.
As I said earlier in the show, the Penguins will not play again now until this Friday
against the Minnesota Wild, who have been very mediocre to start the NHL season.
the Penguins obviously beat them 4 to 1 in St. Paul earlier this season.
After that, they will play the second half of a back-to-back at home on Saturday,
this coming Saturday, against the Seattle Cracken,
who to me, they're kind of, man, they had that nice little start to the season,
but I still, when I look at up and this roster up and down,
I still don't think this is a playoff team, in my opinion.
So these two games here, you've already beaten the Wild Ones.
The Cracken, I think they're okay, but there is a real opportunity here
to potentially sweep this back-to-back and get four points here against two teams that
very well could not make the playoffs this year.
And even after these two, next Wednesday, before Thanksgiving, you played the Buffalo Sabres,
and we all know how many memes we can make about the Sabres, depending on the season.
After that, you have Columbus, who is not terrible, Toronto, and they're having problems.
Philadelphia, the schedule, I think, is really set up here over the next six for the Penguins to bank some points
if they're able to consistently bring 60 minute efforts
and of course if they're able to get some guys back.
This is not a hard stretch of the schedule in my opinion.
No, it's not.
This is where the penguins are really going to have to put some points in the bank
and stack some wins because you went over who they've got coming up
over the next five to end the month in November,
Minnesota, Seattle, Buffalo, Columbus, and then Toronto.
And those are all extremely winnable games.
but then lurking right after that is the month of December.
You start off December with a three-game road swing.
You're going to Philly, Tampa, and Dallas.
Philly, we talked about it after the first game.
It feels like the rivalry might be back.
So that is going to be a challenge in a total wild card of a game.
Tampa, they're having some issues here and there,
but there's still the Tampa Bay Lightning, which will be a difficult go for them.
Dallas is great and then you got a big home stretch but still if you can get out of November
with I would say you look at these next five if you can have some combination of three one and
one to get out of the month you are going to put yourself in really good position going into
what is going to be a hectic December so I want to see them take advantage of the rest I don't
want to see a repeat of what happened in Sweden where you get four days off and then you sleepwalk
through your first game back. You go up against a team in Minnesota that has really been
disappointing to start the year with higher expectations. And you've shown you can beat them.
You've shown you can hang with them. Play with that confidence, play with that drive.
Seattle, Lane Lambert does have them playing solid hockey overall, but like you, not
totally sold on that roster.
I don't really know what the Seattle Cracken are.
They just are kind of there, but they're still playing solid, so it won't be an easy
out.
Buffalo, you are Buffalo fans, you are God's strongest soldiers for how much you put up with
with that franchise.
Don't want to lose that game.
Columbus, another rivalry game, a young team on the rise, so you're going to have to
earn that.
And then Toronto, we'll see which Jekyll and how.
Hyde version of Toronto you get when, when they come to town, are they going to be the high
flying leafs? Are they going to be the sad sack leafs? We'll find out. But it's five games that
present you with a really good opportunity. And if I'm Dan Musin the Penguins, I need and want to
take full advantage of it. Yes, I think three one and one would be fine for one and no. Obviously,
the goal is to win five in a row, but three one and one, four and one, four and one, anything around
there outside of five wins in a row would be perfect for me. Again, Minnesota, they've shown
they can beat them. Seattle, yeah, they're a 500 team. They're third in the Pacific right now.
I don't think that's going to hold. Like, you look at some of the teams behind them.
Edmonton, Vegas, for example, I have both of those teams leapfrogging the crack. And I think
at best, the cracker are maybe the fifth or six best team in the division when everyone is
fully healthy. And you've got the ducks playing really well to start the year. So I think it's a
nice, it's a fine enough start for the Cracken, but I still have questions about this team
on paper. The Maple Leafs, they, they look bad lately. They've lost five in a row. They are
basically towards the bottom of the Atlantic right now, eight, nine and two. Yeah, I know the
penguins, they will bully them for 40 minutes, and then they took the third period off, but
the Leafs vibes this year are definitely just not very good. Columbus, penguins salvaged a point
against them in their first meeting. They're going to want to change that. And the other one, of
course. And then, you know, we talked about Buffalo. I mean, I feel bad for their fans,
of course, because they're kind of in their rebuild from their other rebuild still, which is
crazy. So a big stretch here against what I feel like to me is a lot of non-playoff teams for
this year. Seattle, I still don't have getting in. A Buffalo is the same. Even Toronto, I still
have getting in, but they're not really good this year. Columbus I had on the outside again this
year, but I think they're potentially good enough to get in. But as of right now, I still have them
on the outside. I had Minnesota as a playoff team. But again, you look at all these teams
records and pretty similar. Like, so there's a real opportunity here to bank some points and
they got to take advantage of it before the schedule gets even nastier. The other aspect of it is
very similar to the run up to Sweden. You have condensed games in there where you've got
you've got a back to back and then you've got three and four nights. But on the,
the other side of that is you get quite a bit of rest in the lead up to both of them.
You obviously get the next four days off before you return to action, then you play the
back to back. Then you get three days off and then Buffalo and then you get a day off and
then you've got a back to back. So there is room for recovery and for this team to really,
when they're in the middle of it, to go all out because you will have time to rest and
recover. So it's not going to be your kind of stretch where you play four and five or something
like that. You will have the ability at the end of it to get a day off to basically have a day
where you do nothing. So the opportunity is there for the penguins, especially with the ever
present benchmark of American Thanksgiving coming up. So stack a few points here and you have
put yourself in really good condition in a really good position going into the month of
December. Right. And even for the back to back this weekend, you know, again, you have five days
off going into Friday. You play the next day, of course, but it's not three games in
four nights, for example. I don't think they're going to be losing their legs, excuse me, like they
did against L.A. in the third period before they went to Sweden, where they had nothing after
playing so much hockey that weekend, especially to start the month of November. So I still think
personally they'll have their legs for that game. And also that second half,
with back-to-back, there's no travel involved or sleeping in your own bed that night.
So even though it's a back-to-back and they've struggled on the second half of back-to-backs
this year, I think this one in particular could be an advantage of the Bengals
because they've had a lot of time off lately and they're going to have more time off
this week since they're flying back from Sweden and they'll practice Tuesday,
Wednesday, Thursday, and lead up to the games.
But I think that's going to do it for this episode of the Locked-on Penguins podcast.
Thank you all so much for taking the time to listen to slash watch this one.
Pat and I will be back with a fresh show for you all.
on Tuesday. Then, of course, Wednesday when we give up our warrior helmet, Thursday,
and then we'll preview the weekend for Friday and Saturday. We'll also probably have a
guest or two on this week just because that's the way the schedule is with the Sweden trip
and the five days off multiple times, all that good stuff. But again, that will do it for this one.
Thank you guys for tuning in. We appreciate it. We'll be back on Tuesday.
