Starting point is 00:00:00 Ryan Shea had a really good season for the penguins on their back end, and Pat and I are going to recap his season, plus update everyone on the farm, and we're going to dive into Sydney Crosby going to the World Championships. That's all coming up right after this. Your Locked-on Penguins, your daily podcast on the Pittsburgh Penguins, part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. And of course, thank you all so much for making this your first listen slash watch of the day. We are free and available on all platforms. Pat, we are continuing our season in review series today with
Starting point is 00:01:03 Penguins defenseman Ryan Jay, who is set to be a free agent on July 1st. This was his third season with the Penguins, and it was by far his best, not even close. Going into this season, he had only recorded three goals in six points into combined seasons. This year, Pat, plays 80 games, by far the most games he has played in a single season, and records six goals and 35 points in 80 games. So really close to a half a point per game on the Penguins back end. He had a lot of second pairing minutes next to Chris Littang. He also played a lot on the bottom pairing as well.
Starting point is 00:01:37 It's kind of a mixed bag between playing on the second pair and playing on the third pair. And he was just Mr. Reliable throughout the season was always consistent in all three zones. I thought he was defending a lot better. He also brought it more offensively than I thought he was going to this season because, you know, going into this season, he was always fine enough defensively. he just didn't really bring a lot of offense. This year, Pat, he brought the offense 10fold, really. He was really good offensively for this team,
Starting point is 00:02:08 something that I really didn't see coming heading into this season. He was a revelation for honestly a good chunk of the season. And I don't say that lightly just because the expectations for him really weren't that high heading into the season. I kind of saw him as, you know, a third pair guy, number six defensemen. But he played like their number three slash number four defenseman for. a lot of this season. And just production-wise, play-wise,
Starting point is 00:02:35 I give him an A for this season. You look at some of the underlying numbers for this season as well. Again, 80 games, almost 1,300 minutes of 5-on-5 ice time. When he was on the ice, the Penguins had a plus-22-goal differential, 51% of the scoring chances, 52% of the high-danger chances, and plus 11 high-danger goals for differential at 5-on-5. So all in all, Pat, really strong season from him. We'll get into whether he should come back coming up here in just a couple of minutes.
Starting point is 00:03:04 But I'm going to hand this over to you. Really great stuff from Ryan Shea this season. Another player that it's really hard to give anything other than an A grade for the season. He exceeded any and all expectations. And there's kind of a running theme here, I think through part of what is going on in the Penguins organization. And this also applies to Ryan Shea. We talked about it with Parker Watherspoon yesterday. We're going to talk about it with Harrison Brunick
Starting point is 00:03:32 throughout the offseason and into next year. It takes a while for defensemen to blossom in the NHL. It is very rare that early 20s, teenagers, those type of defensemen come in and are great right away. They'll have flashes, they'll have streaks. They'll even be consistently good for a while. But it seems like in the NHL for everything else, that we've had to relearn about the types of players you put on your roster,
Starting point is 00:04:02 what primes players are in. The thing that's remained consistent is it takes a little bit for defensemen to really get to where they need to be in their primes because Ryan Shea's 29. He won't be 30 until February of next year. And this was far and away his best season. He triples his goal total in a season. I'm not even going to try to do the math of going from three assists to 29 in a season. I know it's 26, but I don't know the factors in that.
Starting point is 00:04:34 And here's the other part that stands out to me. It was a plus 30. And I know that we all kind of look at plus minus as an outdated statistic. But I am very much of the belief when you start to get north or south of 15 when it comes to plus minus, it's a stat you can start to look into. So him finishing the season as a second or third pairing defenseman at a plus 30, it tells me that he was pretty good at defending, and he wasn't so bad at driving offense either.
Starting point is 00:05:09 So this was a really encouraging season from Ryan Shea. And much like we said about Parker Wetherspoon yesterday, the expectations were not that high going in. and he absolutely obliterated them. I agree. And another area that I felt he was also very good at was penalty killing. Played a lot on the PK this season, a little over 181 minutes on the Penguins PK,
Starting point is 00:05:34 which was one of the best units in the league during the regular season. And you saw it in the playoffs, too, especially when Blake Lazot came back, Pat. Now, I know they were going up against the Flyers power play, which was one of the worst units in the league during the regular season. But still, when Ryan Shea was out there, he was doing, but really solid job. He was getting into shooting lanes,
Starting point is 00:05:52 whether it was his body, whether it was stick. He was getting the clears. He was playing well along the boards, winning those loose battles. So I do want to shot him out for his PK ability as well because he did do a very good job on that stellar unit for the Penguins this season.
Starting point is 00:06:08 Now, comes down too bad as we end the segment here. Do they bring him back? Because he is a free agent. If you don't bring him back, there is a bit of a hole on that left side. I think for me, what I like to bring him back, yeah, but if they decide not to, I'm not going to lose too much sleep over it because I think he's going to get a good contract elsewhere. And I'm also not sure he's going to replicate this type of season again, where he has almost 40 points, you know, triple, not triple, doubles his goal output and all that other stuff.
Starting point is 00:06:47 I just don't know if he's going to repeat that type of season again on a multi-year contract. So, again, in a perfect way, I'd like to have him back. But if they want to go elsewhere, find another upgrade there, I'll be totally good with that. Because, you know, they do need to start thinking more long term with this defense. Again, getting a more bona fide guy to play top pair of minutes on the left side is a pretty big priority for me still. But with Ryan Shea, still, still curious to see. see how they tackle this one. So what are your thoughts on it? There's going to be a bit of a tell for me about what the plan is for Ryan Shea. And before I say it, I'm going to caveat it with,
Starting point is 00:07:30 I know this is going to come off as extremely obvious. If they get him re-signed before July 1st, that means they were interested in bringing him back. I think if he makes it to July 1 unsigned, he's probably not coming back because it is very much a copycat league in so many senses that I get the feeling there may be some teams out there that look at Ryan Shea's next year's Darren Radish in the sense that kind of an understated defenseman, late 20s had a small breakout, maybe he's poised for more. We can give him a little bit more money, a little bit more term, and that can be our next guy.
Starting point is 00:08:14 I'm skeptical that he's going to do what Darren Radish did. He's not as gifted offensively as Darren Radish is, in my opinion. I agree with you. My point is there might be a GM out there. Understandably so, because Darren Radish was the biggest surprise of so many players this season that you know that a bunch of teams are probably going to line up on July 1st to try to hand him a bag full of cash for what was likely an outlier season.
Starting point is 00:08:41 And so there's probably going to be another subset of general managers who look at Ryan Shane Shays year and go, that's this year's Darren Radish. It doesn't mean they'll overpay them. But I think it'll be more a sense of the Penguins will look at it and go, we would pay that, but we can go get someone similar for less, either internally or externally. So if he's re-signed by July 1, I'm totally fine bringing him back. I think he's a very reliable ceiling, second pair defensemen, steady third pair defensemen,
Starting point is 00:09:17 if you get him on a good deal. But if he walks, it's not going to be the worst loss. And we'll also see he was very adamant he wanted to return because he basically said he owed it to the penguins for giving him a shot. Because it was the first place he made his NHL debut. And it's the only place he's played in the NHL. So it's clear he has love for the organization. and wants to return. It's just a matter if he's got someone in his camp saying,
Starting point is 00:09:47 hey, go to July 1 and you might get some more money and some more term. So we will wait and see. It's 50-50 for me to answer the question in full. I'm totally fine bringing him back. Not going to be the biggest loss if he walks. I'm with you on that. Like, in a perfect world,
Starting point is 00:10:04 I like to bring him back. But if they don't, it's not the end of the world. He's a replaceable player. I'm just not willing to overpay for his services or anything like that. So we'll see. They have penguins have a lot of decisions to make on a lot of players this summer, and Ryan Shea is one of them. But for his season, A overall, he did an outstanding job, blew away.
Starting point is 00:10:27 All expectations that I had for him, you had for him, and I think a lot of people in the fan base had for him as well. We just have to see what happens over the next month and a half, if not longer, potentially if he goes into past July 1st. I should say. So we'll park the conversation there. That's going to do it for the first segment of today's episode, the Locked on Penguins podcast.
Starting point is 00:10:48 Coming up in the second segment, we're going to discuss the whaley nailers now on the brink of elimination, plus look at game two for tonight between Wilkesbury and Springfield, and that's all coming up right after this. But before we get to that, we have to tell you all about our first sponsor, which is Fandle. The NBA playoffs are here and every possession matters.
Starting point is 00:11:10 If you're looking to get even closer to the action, Fandall has a great offer to get you started. Right now, new customers can bet just $5 and get $150 and bonus bets if your first bet wins. That's right. Turn $5 and do $150 in bonus bets just for getting started. I like using Fandall during the playoffs because everything I need is right there in one place. You can check all the stats, the trends and the matchups before making your picks, which makes the whole experience feel a lot more informed.
Starting point is 00:11:38 Whether you're looking at player props or just following your favorite stars, it adds another level of excitement to every game. Head to fandle.com to get started, and that is fandle play your game, and we're not done. We still got to tell you all about one more sponsor, which is five-hour energy cotton candy. If you've got a sweet tooth like I do, you don't know how tough it is to find that perfect treat
Starting point is 00:11:59 without all the sugar. That's why cotton candy, five-hour energy shot, brings that nostalgic flavor back in a whole new way. This is that classic cotton candy, taste you remember, but with a tasty caffeine boost in zero sugar, it's a quick, easy way to satisfy that sweet craving while keeping things simple and on the go.
Starting point is 00:12:17 I've always loved cotton candy, but I can't be eating sweets all day, and this is the perfect alternative. The flavor really does bring that throwback for the Vinaola vibe, and it's surprisingly smooth. I like how convenient it is as well. It's just a small, portable shot that I can grab whenever I need a little pick me up.
Starting point is 00:12:32 It's become my go-to when I want something sweet without going overboard. Bring on the sweetness with cotton candy, five-hour energy sauce. available online right now at five hour energy.com or on Amazon. All right. We're back here on the Thursday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast. I'm one of your host, Hunter Hodes, joined by my co-s, Patrick Damp.
Starting point is 00:12:57 And Pat, it looks like the nailers almost feel like they're gassed in a way. Just watching that game last night, Maine was doing a really good job, really hemming, wheeling in their own zone for the majority of it. I don't want to say that the schedule is really getting to Wheeling because Maine has to play the exact same schedule. But these last couple of games, feels like Wheeling is gassed, man, going back home for game six. I mean, I got to give credit at least for the two of the three games in Maine to Taylor Godier, who had seemingly continued to do everything he can to keep this Naylor's team in it while they look a little bit gassed. And that's a huge credit to him because when your team is facing a situation like this,
Starting point is 00:13:44 it's difficult to be the goaltender. So he has done a solid job keeping them in it. The other thing I have to say is I got to give credit to the Mariners because they are incredibly opportunistic. You look at some of the goals they scored, especially last night, in the situation in which they were scored right after killing a penalty, right after. right after blocking shots, stuff like that. So on one hand, I'm in agreement that the nailers look a little bit gassed, but at the same time, Maine is getting their opportunities and they're capitalizing on them. The nailers, on the other hand, they're getting chances, but they aren't finishing them.
Starting point is 00:14:29 So this is kind of now going to become a real battle of who can outlast the other over these hopefully next two games in West Virginia because Taylor Godier is keeping them in a position to win. If they can discover or rediscover, I should say, a little bit of offense, it's still there for the taking, but you drop three straight in a series you had a 2-0 lead in. I'm not even going to put that on the players, the coaching staff in general. I'm just going to say that is a really hard psychic wound to come back.
Starting point is 00:15:06 from because you start second guessing yourself, you start doubting yourself. There's a real psychological element to it of, oh, no, we may have blown our best chance and we're screwed. So if they can find a way to force a game seven, game seven is the best thing in sports. And it's a 50-50 coin flip. If it falls your way, you're moving on. If it doesn't, you're done. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:32 And the good thing is, Wheeling does have a couple of days off. They're off today. They're off tomorrow and they'll play game six until Saturday. So you can get away from the rink a little bit, recharge, and then get amped up again because game six is in your home bar. Remember, this is a two three two system in the ECHL. First two games at the higher seeds place, next three, the lower seed. And then the final two games, if necessary, which obviously game six is.
Starting point is 00:15:59 And then game seven would be necessary if the way he wants to win this series, both will be in Wheeling, West Virginia. And hey, Pat, the HALN team has won every single game in this series. So hopefully that's also a good omen for Wheeling coming back home as they try to force game seven of their second round series against Maine. They were creating more offensively in the first two home games that are also defending a lot better as well. So hopefully they can get back to just the basics, really, after really struggling on the road in this series in Maine. Game six. I mean, one other thing, you know, if I'm the Nailers coaching staff in their leadership group on the ice, if nothing else, I'm looking at this as boys, Taylor Godier has really helped pull us here.
Starting point is 00:16:47 Right. It's our turn to pick up the mantle. So he has done everything he can, even in these three losses to where if you're his teammates, if you're his coaching staff, you've got to look at it as this guy's kept us hanging around. now it's our turn to pick him up because he has more than deserved it. I agree with you, but we'll see game six Saturday night in Wheeling, West Virginia. If Wheeling wins that, they will force game seven on Monday. Now, Pat, before we end the second segment, game two, HL Calder Cup playoffs tonight, Wilkesbury versus Springfield.
Starting point is 00:17:21 Wilkesbury, of course, won game one by a score of two nothing via shutout. Sergei Miroshov was great. Bill Zonan, he gets his first AHA goal and what a beauty was. Tanner Howell also scored in that game. And just overall, I thought Wilkesbury played very well against a scrappy Springfield team. And they'll have an opportunity to go up to nothing in this series as it will shift back to Springfield, at least for game three. If Wilkesbury wins tonight. But if Springfield wins, it'll be tie 1-1, which would force at least a game four in Springfield as well.
Starting point is 00:17:52 For this series, first two games in Wilkesbury, next two in Springfield. And then if necessary, a game five would be back in Wilkesbury, before a potential birth to the Eastern Conference final, which is the next round of the Calder Cup playoffs. I'm excited, man. I've been really having fun watching this Wilkesbury team, seeing how these young prospects do in these high-stakes games. I want to see it again from Rucker Gordy,
Starting point is 00:18:18 Billy Coivinen. I've talked about Tanner Howl, of course, Bill Zonan, Tristan Brose, I've talked about as well, Harrison Brunich, but is there going to be an under-the-radar prospect that that could potentially come clutch tonight for Wilkesbury. That's what I'm going to be watching for. But let's see if they can go up to O here. That would be obviously huge just because you'd be one win away from sweeping Springfield.
Starting point is 00:18:41 But you also want to defend home ice and not surrender it. Now, they did win that first round series against Hershey in four games, though they did surrender home ice. Now, again, they did win the series. But you still don't want to surrender home ice when you have an opportunity to go up 2-0 when the series shifts back to Springfield. No, you don't. And I mean, just in the sense that you want to obviously put yourself in the best position
Starting point is 00:19:06 possible to move on and also give yourself more rest and recovery time because in the NHL, I do think having a lot of downtime can be a bit of a detriment just because it is the luxury suite. You've got all the best tools, all the best treatment, all the best travel, all the best food, et cetera, et cetera, ain't that way in the AHL and the ECHL. It's a lot of bus trips. It's a lot of catered meals from the local restaurant. It's a lot of, hey, the local hospital donated us some supplies.
Starting point is 00:19:41 So when you're in these minor leagues, giving yourself that time off to just chill. You don't have to jump back on the bus. You don't have to take another six, seven, eight, nine, ten hour bus ride cramped into that bus. So getting that win and giving yourself more opportunity to close the series out is crucial so you can get that recovery and rest time. The other thing is I'm going to relate this back to the big club for our listeners. This series against Springfield is a lot like the 2017 conference finals against Ottawa. This is a very disciplined, very slow it down, get down in the muck kind of team. They are not going to be able to go blow for blow with Wilkes Bear.
Starting point is 00:20:28 So if you're the baby penguins, patience is required. Even if you don't jump out to a one-nothing lead, if you're getting chances, if they're not fallen, you can't deviate from what you're doing because this is a team in Springfield that depends on counterpunching. So if you feel like, oh, I'm going to take that one extra move or I'm going to do that one extra stride, they're waiting for you to do that. Yeah. So just continue to do what you do and hopefully break the wall down because if you try to get
Starting point is 00:21:05 into a game where you're taking unnecessary risks, you're making high risk passes, you're taking shots that don't have a lane, they're going to capitalize on that. So for the baby penguins tonight, very similar to what you did in game one, just keep working, stick to the plan, and know that it can. work out because you do have the talent to outlast this Springfield team. Man, you should have told that to the Pittsburgh Penguins when they were playing the Flyers, just the way that the Flyers were playing in the first round series, very defensive. They were relying on some counterplay, basically just waiting for the Penguins to make mistakes.
Starting point is 00:21:43 And that was one of the biggest reasons why they went up three games to none in that series is because the Penguins were at times back kind of just handing them goals. And they were getting a little too undisciplined. They found their way back into the series towards the late stages, of course, but they just made too many mistakes and no-showed. But hey, at least for this series for Wilkesbury, they were patient, they were disciplined in the first game, they let the game come to them,
Starting point is 00:22:08 and they were able to capitalize on the couple of chances that they did get, especially when it came to Bill Zonan's chance, and then Tanner Howe on the breakaway. You know you're playing a defensive first team, you're going to get your chances if you just stay committed to your assistant, system, you play mistake-free hockey. The chances are going to come, especially with the talent that you have on this team. And in the biggest part of Tanner Howe's goal, I said it yesterday, was the hard work.
Starting point is 00:22:34 It wasn't some crazy move that leads to a breakaway. He out-hustled the guy, but what led to it was the penguin, the baby penguins played good defense. Tanner Howe put himself in a position where he was able to block a shot, win the race, and get to the puck. But it was also born of the fact that they had a lead on Springfield. Springfield had to deviate from that stay-at-home patient kind of game. That kind of stuff will build on itself.
Starting point is 00:23:02 So you got to stick to that system. You got to stick with that patience. And you should, obviously there's no guarantee, but you should be rewarded. Yes, hopefully in Wilkesbury's case. But that's going to do it for the second segment. Coming up to end the show, we touched on it a little bit on Wednesday, but we're going to dedicate a full segment to it. Sydney Crosby officially going to the World Championships,
Starting point is 00:23:26 and Pat and I are going to talk about that coming up right after this. But before we get to that, we have to tell you all about one more sponsor, which is Hems. Hymns is not affiliated with or endorsed by Vietris. All right, we're back here on the Thursday edition of the Lockdown Penguins podcast. I'm one of your host, Hunter Hodes, joined by my co-s, Patrick Namp. And Pat, we discussed it for a couple of minutes to end the show briefly on Wednesday. But yes, Sidney Crosby officially going to the World Championships.
Starting point is 00:25:08 It felt like at first he wasn't going to do it because he was very noncommittal when he was asked about it at his locker room cleanout day. Kind of just said, eh, we'll see. Wasn't really committing to it one way or another. But his knee must be fine because he's going to the World Championships. And this will be the fourth time that he goes, Pat. He was there for 2006, 2015, in 2025. He won gold with Canada in the 2015 World Championships. Macklin Celebrini is also there.
Starting point is 00:25:39 I didn't get to say this yesterday. We talked about the captain's, the captaincy a little bit. Can I just have a line with Celebrini and Crosby on it at the World Championships? Please, just inject that into my veins, man. I mean, you could see he's trained with Cid before and Cid's kind of taken him under his wing. a little bit as kind of almost telling him, hey, you're going to be the next one for Team Canada. And you look at the, you look at the season he had this past year.
Starting point is 00:26:10 I mean, the comparisons are pretty appropriate between Crosby and Cellebrini. And Crosby was asked today about the captaincy. And he kind of said, he was noncommittal, hey, we're going to figure it out, went out of his way to praise what a good year. Macklin Cellebrini had, how good of a player. he is, how good of a person he is. I think with that answer, it kind of feels like Sid's going to defer.
Starting point is 00:26:36 It feels like Sid going to look at it and say, you know what, kid? Like, it's your turn. Like, I've done it. I've been here. I've won it. I've been the captain. I know what this is about.
Starting point is 00:26:48 I'll be here to help you. And let's be honest. I don't think anybody's going to look at that team and go, oh, that's Celebrini's team now. everyone's going to know it's Cid's team. So it might be a nice little kind of trial run for Macklin Celebrini to learn how to be a leader while having the sea on his on his jersey. I still almost wonder if Celebrini is still going to be like, you know what? No, you're taking this.
Starting point is 00:27:14 You don't have to say, I'm just going to give you the back to sea. But hey, maybe Celebrity does get to keep the sea. At the end of the day, it's really not that deep of a conversation. It's the Royal Championships. Everyone is excited. I just want to see Celebrity play with Sid because I think that will be awesome. Hell, maybe we get to see Porter Martone play with them as well. That would be something else if we got to see that.
Starting point is 00:27:40 But still, Crosby is already part of the Triple Gold Club hat. So he has that going for him. For Canada, this will be from May 15th through May 31st. They will play Sweden tomorrow. Then they'll play Italy. on the 16th, May 18th, they'll play Denmark, the 21st they'll play Norway, 22nd, they'll play Slovenia, May 24th, they'll play Slovakia, and on May 26th, they will play Czechia and the World Championships that we broadcast on NHL Network and ESPN Plus, if you want to watch the first
Starting point is 00:28:12 game tomorrow on Friday against Sweden, that will be at 10.20 a.m., and then on Saturday against Italy, at the same time, 1020 a.m. as well. But Pat, those are the opponents, and that's the schedule for Team Canada at the World Championships before we get into the knockout stage. The other thing to add here that we kind of did miss a little bit is obviously we said that Parker Watherspoon is going for Team Canada,
Starting point is 00:28:37 which is very much deserved. Spetsa and Dubus are part of Team Canada's management group, so they are also part of the World Championships, as well as Penguins Strength and Conditioning Coach, Sean Young, same role for Team Canada. So penguins are pretty well represented, at the world championships, which kind of feels like a consolation prize, because as we know, the world championships, when you get to this time of the year,
Starting point is 00:29:04 you are no longer in the Stanley Cup playoffs tournament. But at the end of the day, the last thing I'll add, I kind of touched on it yesterday, I think this is kind of good for where Sidney Crosby is going to be going into next season, because Crosby has said it himself, the more time off, that he has, the harder it is for him to get back into it at his age. So I think this is him kind of telling us, hey, I still got gas left in this tank. I'm not slowing down. I'm not tapering off.
Starting point is 00:29:37 I'm still going. And then there's the other side of it as well where the man loves nothing more than the sport of hockey and competing. So any chance to put on the Maple Leaf on his chest or the skating penguin, he's going to do it. Right. And just one silver. the Olympics, he's ready for another gold. At least that's how I see it. And this also keeps him refreshed going into the season. He gets to do this, then start his offseason routine, and then
Starting point is 00:30:06 he'll be fully fit and ready to go for training camp. So there we go. Cindy Crosby to the World Championships and Team Canada will start tomorrow, May 15th, 1020 a.m. against Sweden. But that's going to do it for the Thursday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast. Thank you all so much to take the time to listen to slash watch this one. Pat and I will be back with a fresh episode of you all on Friday with a brand new edition of Fan Take Friday.
