Before we get into the Christmas miracle that is the Pittsburgh Penguins,
winning their first shootout of the season, the big news, the historic news,
the thing that we have to start with is Captain Sidney Crosby has officially become the franchise
leader for the Pittsburgh Penguins in points with 1,724 points, 645 goals, 1,079 assists.
And of course, his 1,387th game against his boyhood.
team in Pittsburgh at PPG Paints Arena.
Sometimes the hockey gods make you wait, but what they make you wait for is
absolutely perfect.
And of course, in classic Sydney Crosby fashion, it comes on two assists.
He gets it out of the way early in the first period.
He assists on a Ricard Raquel power play goal, which gives the penguins, which gives him,
excuse me his franchise leading point and I'll say this and then I will pass it off to you
Hunter Sidney Crosby has done everything and more that we could have imagined that we could
have asked of him since he was taken first overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins as Mario Lemieux said
in his pre-taped message to Sidney Crosby he has now more
than ever placed himself among some of the greatest players to ever play the sport.
He's a top five player of all time, Pat, been saying that for the last several years.
And I was waiting to see who was going to pick this team up off the mat after this
eight game losing streak, just because they had not been playing well, especially these last
two games, getting shut out twice, getting outscored eight nothing.
I didn't like Saturday's performance.
but we saw vintage Sidney Crosby on today.
After her, I thought, was a few lackluster performances from him
and honestly the rest of the team over the last week,
he picked the team up off the mat,
gets the goal in the first period,
then gets the assist to break the record.
The Penguins take a two to one lead into the first intermission.
I really liked that first period as a whole.
But you could tell when the moment that he broke the record,
they weren't losing that.
game. Yeah, I know. It got really dicey in three on three overtime. That was the worst
I've seen the Penguins play in overtime this season. But they weren't going to lose that game
on the night that Crosby broke, one of the biggest records in franchise history, a record that
when Mario said it, I don't think anyone thought this was ever going to be broken. Now it is.
And Crosby has literally exceeded every single expectation and then some since coming into the league
two decades ago he not only is a top five player of all time he is such a wonderful ambassador
for the sport both on and especially off the ice he's a great hockey player pat but he's an even
better human you saw even in his post game interview after the game it felt like he was going to cry
like he was getting a little emotional there he understood how much this record meant to him
just because again this was a record that at the time no one really thought this was ever going to be broken
and now that Sid has it and he's going to keep getting points until he retires as a member of the Penguins.
I don't think this record is ever being touched.
If it is, I think we are truly the most spoiled fan base of all time.
But just an incredible accomplishment, seeing Mario's message for him was spectacular.
And on a night that the Penguins needed it the most, Cindy Crosby delivered.
Just an awesome performance from him.
And you said it, man.
what better do it against your childhood team we talked about it maybe for
saturday i was like in montreal would have been cool this is cooler man against your
boyhood team at home where the fan base can go nuts you know just watching it live
it was probably the loudest i've heard ppg this year honestly that that crowd pop was
spectacular everyone coming onto the ice to congratulate him was sick he saw
Evgeny Malkin post game in the locker room.
That speech to him was incredible.
Same with Crystal Tang.
You know, we're never going to see someone like this ever again.
So celebrate it for as long as you want people because this is just awesome.
It really is.
Genuinely stunned that I'm sitting here recording this podcast this morning because
between Crosby breaking the record and then as our cohort over on Locked on Steelers,
Chris Carter talked about wild end of the.
Steelers Lions game. I could feel my heart beating out of my chest. I thought I was probably
going to keel over between those two things happening simultaneously. So a bit of a heart racing
night in Pittsburgh last night. But it's funny because you look at a lot of the career milestones
from Sidney Crosby. For as great as he is, for as clutch as he is and everything he's done in his
career it feels like every time he's close to a big milestone he makes us wait for a little bit
he makes us wait for a few games you remember last year with his 600th goal it was like okay when's this
going to happen when's this going to happen when's this going to happen and then it finally does
and then this year we're all excited he's chasing down lemieux he's chasing down the the franchise
record in points and a couple games passed and you're like all right he's two away he's two away
from setting the record goes pointless for a game goes pointless for another game get shut out and
then you're like oh my god are we ever going to see this before we get to 2026 and then you could just
feel it and this will be a good segue into recapping the games while the effort on Saturday wasn't
great in that 4-0 shutout you could kind of see the seeds starting to get planted with the team
as a whole going into Sunday.
They put together as the game continued a better effort.
They didn't start great.
They were behind the eight ball most of the game.
But as the game progressed, you could see, all right, this team's starting to find
its footing.
They're starting to do things a little bit better.
They're starting to find some even ground here.
And you went, okay, Sunday is a day where they should be able to pick themselves off
the mat because everything is square.
both them in Montreal are taking the same flight they're playing at the same times it's 50 50 it's
not hey you guys have to go play Montreal in Montreal on Saturday and you got to come back and
pick a random team who didn't play on Saturday night everything was square because it was a home
at home and then of course on Sunday he gets it out of the way early he was absolutely flying
out of the gate on Sunday and it just felt like okay
it's a matter it's a matter of time now it's it's going to happen tonight we'll see how it goes and then the penguins they pick themselves up time and time again on sunday night to pull out a four to three shootout win which is crazy to say so we got to recap both of those games but before we do amazing from sidney crosbie he is everything we could have ever wanted and i'll say it until i'm blue in the face guys
It's not going to be too much longer.
So every chance you get, appreciate this man, appreciate his body of work,
because the end is a whole hell of a lot closer than the beginning.
And if you're ever thinking, if you're listening to the show and you live outside of the Pittsburgh area,
you're ever thinking about wanting to come into a game,
but maybe you're not sure, pull the trigger and go because you're right, Pat.
We're approaching the end here where Cindy Crosby is not going to be,
playing for this team at some point. So whenever you have a chance to go see him live,
please do it because it might be, you know, potentially depending on where you live outside
the Pittsburgh region, it might be your last opportunity to watch him live inside PewGP's
Arena or, you know, if you want to go on the road, if the Penguins are playing near your city,
do the same thing there. I can't recommend it enough. But another great performance from him,
the rest of the team fed off of it. And I thought,
overall, excluding the three-on-three overtime, which wasn't good.
But for the 60 minutes in regulation, that is the best the penguins have looked
since they went up 5 to 1 against San Jose.
Yes, I know what happened after they went up 5 to 1 against San Jose.
We're not here to talk about that.
But in terms of the way they were carrying play, in my opinion,
they were skating the Canadians off the rink in this game on Sunday during regulation.
And a lot of it was because they fed off of what Sidney Crosby did in the first period.
That goal, vintage Crosby goal, gets the assist on the one that made it to one.
Again, every milestone, it just gets sweeter and sweeter, man.
Like, I can't wait to hopefully come on here, celebrate more, even though the end is getting closer.
But hey, Pat, we're still 1,800 points right around the corner, my friend.
That's going to be another big one that's coming here soon.
That is a good place to leave it for now because Hunter, you can see him rocking back and forth.
He wants to recap these games, so do I, and we will do that when we get back right after this.
But first, we've got to tell you about today's first sponsor, and that is game time.
There is nothing like being near the ice during hockey season, the speed, the hits, the atmosphere.
It is absolutely unmatched.
Watching at home is great, but being in the building is a completely different experience.
The only thing that used to get in the way was actually getting tickets, long queues, endless screens, and prices changing at checkout.
That's why the GameTime app gives the advantage back to the fans.
It's the hack for unlocking amazing NHL tickets and experiences in just a few taps.
You guys know it.
I may have pulled them off the screen for this ad, but I have used GameTime for, oh, so many things over the past year since they came on as a sponsor of our show, whether it was Pittsburgh Penguin,
games, Pittsburgh Pirates games, WWE events, and yes, even Sabrina Carpenter. It has been
the perfect app for me to get tickets. I'm a huge fan of the upfront price guarantee right there.
As I said, you know what you're paying right when you click the seat and the ticket. You're not
getting hit with any of those annoying fees at checkout. You know what you're paying. The same thing
goes for the seat view inside the app. I may have been to PPG paints arena more
time than I can count, but I still know, I still like to know what my seat's going to look like
when I get there before the game. It's a great app. The pricing's great and everything makes
it simple and easy for you to get tickets to your favorite upcoming event. So take the guesswork
out of buying tickets with Game Time, download the Game Time app, create an account and use
code locked on NHL. That's L-O-C-K-E-D-O-N-HL for $20 off your first purchase. Again, create an account
and redeem the code Locked-on NHL for $20 off.
Download the GameTime app today because it's game time.
All right, we're back here on the Monday edition of Locked-on Penguins.
I'm Patrick Damp right alongside Hunter Hodes.
And it was a weekend split of the home-at-home between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Montreal Canadians.
A 4-0 loss in Montreal on Saturday night.
and then a four to three shootout, excuse me, win over the Canadians on Sunday.
Let's start with the loss hunter, the 4-0 shutout at the Bell Center on Saturday.
I hinted at this in the last segment.
The start was not great.
They did not play well to start the game, but as the game progressed, they started to get a little
bit better.
They started to really push back on Montreal, but by the time you got,
to the third period, the die had pretty much been cast at that point.
You weren't going to come out with a win.
It was 3-0, and it was pretty much game over at that point.
But I do have to give them credit because putting it in the context of where they were that
night, it was there, they were on a seven-game losing streak.
It became 8.
When it was 3-0 after Josh Anderson scores a short-handed goal, it would have been very easy
given all of that context for the penguins to just go, that's it, it's over, we're done,
we can't buy a win, but they kept battling, they kept working, they kept pushing.
And there have been a few losses, there were a few losses during that streak where you
could see that there was a malaise.
There was kind of a negative attitude, negative energy, whatever you want to call it.
that went away in the third period against Montreal and I went by the end of the game I thought
okay they have a really good opportunity to pick themselves up on Sunday and write this ship
and they did just that so while I'm not going to compliment a 4-0 shutout loss
I liked a lot of the process by the end of the game and thought all right that is something
we have been waiting to see for a few games and we end up getting it on Sunday when they
gut out a shootout win over the habs.
I disagree a little bit.
I do think it wasn't the Ottawa loss.
Like this one, I saw a little bit more fight.
I saw a little bit more passion.
I still didn't like a lot of the effort personally in the Saturday game against Montreal.
However, I thought Eric Carlson was especially tremendous from Penguins.
He was setting up scoring chances bat virtually every time he was on the ice.
No one was finishing the chances off.
And you could tell the player.
were gripping their sticks a little too tight in that one.
I thought Ricardo Raquel also was the second best player on the ice for the penguins,
in my opinion, had a beautiful little dangle going through two Canadians players later on
in that game.
Jacob Fowler was just a better saving.
He's kind of been their boogeyman in two games this year, my friend.
Well, I do have to give Fowler credit for Saturday because that third period,
the penguins were swarming and threatening, and he held the fort really well.
he was good yes i know i know that our listeners are tired of me saying it but we do have to remember
there is another team on the other side playing the game and the penguins played pretty well i think
in the third for most of the third period and fowler was there pretty much at well not pretty much
every time to shut the door and he deserves full marks for that effort in the third period
i agree i just think by the by the third period it was too little too late if you had been playing
like that at the start of the game obviously would have been a lot better but again through two
periods i just really didn't like a lot of what i was seeing when you were down the third yeah i saw
a little bit more pushback but still i thought they played for the majority of that game a lot of
the same hits that i was talking about you know after ottawa you know even after edmonton
where i didn't really like their effort in some of the other losses in this losing streak as well
obviously some of the other losses they played really well like anaheim and most of the san jane
But you fast forward to the game on Sunday, and we talked about Cindy Crosby, picking this team up off the map.
But, you know, I also saw this team fighting for one another, you know, getting involved with some of these post-wistle skirmishes.
They weren't taking anything in this one.
You know, the Canadians were trying to push them around, and I saw some pushback.
It's been what I've been wanting to see from this team for the last few games, just because I hadn't really been seeing it.
I know that's a little bit of a caveman type take.
but I liked everything what I saw in this game by the Penguins.
Again, I thought they were the better team at five-on-five.
You know, that's supported by the metrics.
You look at the five-on-five numbers, Pat.
Penguins had 19 high-danger chances for at five-on-five in this game,
only four against.
Yes, 10 of them were in the second period
where the Penguins really tilting the ice.
But they badly, I thought, I'll play the Canadians in this one.
They also had 71% of the expected goals,
65% of scoring chances at 5 on 5.
This should have been a regulation when the other Canadians goalie made some really nice saves.
The Walnut McGrady, especially where he lunged his glove out.
That was an unbelievable save later on in that game.
Doebus had himself a good night against the Penguins on Sunday.
And the thing that I agree with what you're saying about them pushing back,
The thing that I want to build off of for that, though, for Sunday, was this was the kind of win that was going to break this skid.
It wasn't going to be the prettiest win.
They weren't going to come out and win five nothing.
They weren't going to have a snooze festival win where they just run over another team for a couple of reasons.
One, when you're in this kind of skid, it's really easy and it's human nature.
I don't care if you have the ultimate winner in Sidney Crosby or you're a young team or anything in
between. When you're in this kind of skid, the minute it looks a little bleak, it is human nature for you
to think, good Lord, what do we have to do to get out of this? Why is nothing going our way?
But it's going to take a game like that where you're pushing back. Every punch that you take,
you get back up both literally and figuratively. And when Dobson tied it early in the second, or
third, excuse me, they kept pushing the penguins. They kept coming back. They kept trying and
pushing. They weren't able to find that equalizer. But I'll say this. I know that you said that
you thought that the penguins played poorly in three on three overtime. And I'm going to
disagree on that in the sense that the Montreal Canadians are a team that are built to play
that three on three overtime. That is a team that is really good in that period. So to further the
point that I'm making, even if you don't score or give up the goal in three on three
overtime, it gives you a little bit of belief of, all right, we hung tough on that. We
played, we, we bent, but we didn't break. Now we just got to finish the job. And of all
people to go out and open the scoring in the shootout, a guy who I was ready behind the scenes
look, if they would have lost to come on in Savage, Kevin Hayes scores a really nice goal in
the shootout. Then Crosby unable to score. Then Cole Cawfield scores on a really nice goal.
I know that we all want to pile on Sheelavs, but I don't see a lot of goalies stopping that one on
Caulfield. Raquel gets the winner. Sheelves makes a save on Suzuki. And what do you know,
they win a shootout and the skid is over? Yeah. So going back to your point about overtime,
I hear what you're saying. But they also hardly have.
the puck that entire overtime someone has to be able to make a play to get the pug i thought
defensively they were a bit lackluster there but to your point i agree with you a bit that
the canadians for a very hard matchup i mean i was seeing lame pos did people's lives out there
that that's what it looked like and i was saying to myself man can't wait till he's on the
olympic team at some point i don't think it's going to be for this year but uh he is disgusting in
three on three. I thought Cole Coughfield was a lot of fun out there. Demadolm was a lot of fun.
You know, but I just, in terms of the penguins having the puck, I got to see them fight for
a little bit more in overtime. Again, I'm being a little nitpicky, but still, didn't like the
way they played the three on three. Credit to Archer, She lost. He made some dazzling saves for the
scene that he had to a shootout. And then in the shootout, he was awesome. Best I've seen him look.
He looked confident in the crease.
That third one that he saved,
it was the second save out of three attempts.
But the third shooter, he stayed with Suzuki the entire way.
And Pat, watch the way the bench celebrated.
Kevin Hayes literally looked to the heavens and was like,
thank God.
Damn news, I think must have done four to five fistpons.
Everyone was so excited.
You can tell how much weight was lifted off their shoulders,
considering this losing tree was going on.
you know now it's about building off this win how do you build off it going into tuesday's game
against a maple league's team that is really fighting it right now i mean there's been plenty rumors
that kreger ruby's job is on the line we're going to get into more of that coming up to end the show
and then we'll preview the game on tuesday but it was just such a massive win to get for so many
reasons you said it about kevin hayes when he first went out there i was like dan news think we might be
Galaxy braining this one a little bit. And then I was like, because my jaw just hit the floor
with that beautiful move that he had. And then Ricard Raquel, I'm glad they did utilize him.
Of the players that the Penguins have in shootouts, he is one of their better ones. So having
him back is nice. And he had a really nice deep there on Domish. So really nice job there.
And then she loves was also great. Breaks a nine game shootout losing streak. Their last shootout
win, Pat, last November against San Jose. It has been over a full 12 months since this team has
won a shootout. But hey, it's Christmas week. It's a Christmas miracle. Crosby breaks the record.
They get a shootout win. The weight was lifted off their shoulders. But now, as I said,
how do you keep going from this? Also, I do want to shout out. No La Chari, top shelf for Mama
hides the cookies. That was a beautiful goal from Noah Chari, my friend. And also, one last thing.
Thought Chris Lange played a really nice game in this one.
That's the best I've seen Lattang look in the last couple weeks, in my opinion.
That is a good spot for us to end it real quick.
But I will say, Dan Mews, apparently a confirmed listener of Locked-on Penguins.
Because we said when Kulak was acquired, he'd probably be pretty good with Chris Lattang.
And what do you know?
The last couple games, those two have been paired together.
And while it hasn't been great yet, you can start seeing some of the signs that Latang might be turning
it around, which is nothing but positive for this team and their stated goals for this year.
But that is going to do it for this middle segment.
When we come back, like Hunter said, you got the Toronto Maple Leafs before the break,
and then one game coming out of the break.
We will get you a quick rundown at the week ahead when we come back right after this.
But we've got one more sponsor we've got to tell you about, and that is Fandol.
NFL Sundays, they move fast, one big play, and suddenly everything feels different,
whether it's, I don't know, just picking a random example here.
Kenneth Gainwell scoring a touchdown that nobody thought was going to be a touchdown
and might have been a penalty or not even a catch.
Just a random example I'm picking out of nowhere, nothing really based in any reality for that.
But that's what makes betting with Fandall so exciting.
You're not just watching the game, you're reacting to it in real time.
With Fandall, you can place bets as the action unfolds, every drive, every momentum swing, and every highlight moment.
Live betting is the best when the game starts to shift.
A receiver gets hot, a defense tightens up, or the momentum flips after a turnover.
Fandul lets you jump right into the moment with live spreads and money lines adjusting instantly.
Player props update as guys heat up.
You can bet next touchdown scores, drive results, totals, and more.
It keeps you locked into every snap, every drive, and drive.
every possibility with the Pittsburgh Steelers heading into a matchup with the Cleveland Browns this
weekend. They are the favorites and there's going to be plenty of other props that you can bet on
for that AFC North Showdown this weekend by heading to Fandul. So if you want to be right in the
middle of the action this season, visit Fandul.com and place your NFL live bets all season long.
Fandul, the game moves fast and so can you.
All right, back here on the Monday edition,
wrapping up this Victory Monday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast.
I'm Patrick Damp right alongside Hunter Hodes.
And it is going to be, whether you want to believe it or not,
a tough test coming up for the Penguins on Tuesday as the Toronto Maple Leafs come to town.
Because here's the thing.
These are two teams that are mired in a very simple,
place right now. The penguins just come off an eight game losing streak. They were obviously
able to break it. The Maple Leafs, they are struggling really hard lately. They are four,
four and two in their last 10. They have lost five of their last six. Craig Barube is very much
on the hot seat. And it looks like a team that right now might be in for some big changes if
things don't pick up. So for the penguins, you have to take advantage of a team in a vulnerable
position. A hundred percent. And now that the penguins have this win, again, it's on building this.
And the Maple Leafs, you said it, Pat, they're really down bad. They just went 0 and 3 on this last
three game road trip. They just got absolutely placered by the Dallas Stars. It really does feel
like Craig Ruby is out of answers right now. And if this continues the way it's going,
He might find himself out of a job.
I can see the general manager getting canned.
Maybe you see other big changes with their core.
They also got shut out by the capitals.
Early on in this road trip,
they lost five to three to the predators
who are not very good this year.
They have been fighting it all year long.
Every other team of the league, Pat,
has been able to figure out the Maple Leafs,
except the Penguins, basically,
because the Penguins,
they had them figuring out for 40 minutes in the first game,
and then they played one of their worst periods of the year,
over a month ago, that third period
where they blew that three-goal lead
and the third lost in regulation.
You then get absolutely blown out at home.
Arta Shilovs didn't have it in that one.
Now you'll try to, you know, A, avoid the season series sleep,
but also, you know, try to win your second row
and try to really just get back in the swing of things here
now that you're not gripping your stick too tightly,
but this is a perfect opportunity to really take advantage of a team
that also, you know, the penguins were looking a bit broken,
during this 8 game losing streak, I said it a couple of times on the show the last couple of weeks.
This leaves team also looks very broken right now.
You know, whether it's the stars on the ice, whether it's the depth.
You see Craig Ruby again screaming at his players on the bench.
You see him talking about how there's really no passion after games.
It's like, ooh, when the coach is saying that, your days are kind of numbered, I feel like at that point.
But that's still a big one.
Because, you know, it's an opportunity for you to really, you know, write some of the wrongs that you've had against this team this year.
these last couple of seasons as well because the penguins just they haven't I feel like they
haven't played as well against the leaps you know we're going to dive and do more of a preview
for the Tuesday episode you know it's the last game before the Christmas break but there's a pretty
big opportunity here for the penguins especially if they can build off the confidence that they
have after Sundays a game against Montreal going into a game in Toronto against a team that
is very desperate right now they're desperate for anything to go right
And then after that, they will come out of the break on Sunday against the Chicago Blackhawks who are really struggling right now without the services of Connor Bedard.
They will play the Philadelphia Flyers tomorrow and then they will play the Dallas Stars on the 27th and then come to town or they will welcome the Penguins to Chicago on that Sunday.
So this is another team for the Penguins that while Chicago was a nice early surprise, you can.
kind of see that Bedard was a really huge part of it in their quick start. And now without him,
they're struggling a bit. So it's two opportunities coming up here over the next week for the
penguins to take advantage of two teams that are really struggling and not a such great place.
For Chicago, it's not that big of a deal because you expected them to be a little bit better this
year, but you didn't expect them to be good quite yet. And this is kind of just the stumbling block that you
hit when you're a team like Chicago.
But again, opportunity with two games, one before, one after the break for the penguins
to really write their own ship.
Agreed.
These are two very winnable games.
We've just talked about Toronto struggles.
Chicago, they're coming back down to earth a little bit more.
Even when they were playing a little bit better with Fadar in the lineup, I was still a little
bit skeptical.
I talked about this on the Thursday edition of the Lockdown NHL show a couple of weeks ago.
A lot of their underlines are simply not good.
this year, you know, especially when you look at some of their defensive metrics.
But they've at least shown a little bit of progress this year, which is, I think,
what a lot of Chicago fans want to see after these last few years where they just
have been in the basement of the NHL really thinks that we're not going to get Bard
for that game just because he has been on fire for the Blackhawks this year, been trying
to play his way on to Team Canada.
But again, that said, two very winnable games here for the Penguins to try and potentially
get a three-game winning streak going here but again got to go game by game you won the first one
to get that monkey off your back now it's about sacking some wins make it two make it three after
that try to make it four but they're still very much in this i know it was an eight-game losing streak
teddy's trying to get me to wrap it up over here she's getting a little whining real restless
but i know it's an a little losing streak but pat look at the standings they're still very jumbled
together they're still in this especially if they can scrounge together some wins you are
absolutely right. And just some housekeeping before we close it out, our schedule for the week.
We will be back on Tuesday to preview the game against the Maple Leafs. Then we will be back
on Wednesday to recap that game. We will be off Thursday for Christmas Day. There will be no
episode for that. But then we will return on Friday the 26th to get you set for the weekend
matchup against the Chicago Blackhawks, as well as bring back our favorite.
favorite fan take Friday. So make sure you are on the lookout for that. But that is going to do it
for this Monday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast. For Hunter Hodes, I am Patrick
Damp. Thank you as always for tuning in. And as I said, we will be back on Tuesday.
