Starting point is 00:01:18 On today's show, we're going to take a look back at some history for the one and only Sydney Crosby. We're going to continue our season in review series for Blake Lazot in what was a interesting first season as a Pittsburgh penguin. But before we do that, thanks to Elliot Friedman, we have got a couple more names who have emerged as potential candidates to be the next head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Hunter. One of these names, you and I kind of had our eye on for a while. Pat, I'm going to do this again. Pat myself on the back. You can pat yourself on the back to Elliot Freeman reported on 32 thoughts today that Jay Woodcroft has gotten an interview to the former Edmonton's oil. their as head coach that turned them from a, I don't want to say a joke, but kind of a
Starting point is 00:02:08 regular playoff team into a contender, got them to the Western Conference Final, got them to the second round the next year, was then fired at the beginning of last season before Chris Knoblock took over, and he took them from a contender to what they are right now, Pat, which is kind of bordering on the line of a juggernaut, if we're being completely honest. I mean, back-to-back trips now to the Western Conference Final under Chris Knoblock. They came within a game of winning the Stanley Cup final last year, and they have a good a shot as anyone to win the cup right now with the way they're playing. So Woodcroft, I felt like, did do a fairly solid job in Edmonton.
Starting point is 00:02:44 He has gotten an interview according to Freedman, and he also named job, Jay Leach. For those that don't know who Jay Leach is this past season, he was assistant coach for the Boston Bruins. Previously, he was assistant coach on the Seattle Cracken. He has been the head coach of the Providence Bruins. And also, Pat, he does have a connection to the Pittsburgh Penguins. He was an assistant coach under Mike Sullivan during the 2015-16 season with the Wilkes-Rankton Penguins before Mike Sullivan was promoted. And then we all know, the rest was history.
Starting point is 00:03:13 Back to back Stanley Cups was here for 10 years that just got fired a couple weeks ago. So he does have a little bit of familiarity with the organization. It looks like he's gotten an interview. Elliot did name drop that David Quinn, it looks like, has gotten an interview too. Again, I still feel like that's just a courtesy interview. Hey, you were here this past season. What do you got for this job? I still don't think he's going to be the hire.
Starting point is 00:03:36 If you hire someone like that, I think you are committed to fully sucking for the next couple of years. And that's not someone who is going to be the coach of the next contender. Again, I think if you hire him, that's like a short-term bridge coach to then firing him and bringing in someone that can coach the next contender. But I still don't get the vibe that that's the road they're going to go down. I think they want to bring in someone that can not only develop these players and oversee
Starting point is 00:04:03 the end of the core three, but I think can also oversee the start of this new contention window. I think they want someone that can be here, not just during the next couple years, but maybe for the next three to four to maybe even five years. That's the vibe I get, especially when I go back and rewatch some of the press farmers that Dubas had, look at the qualities that he's looking for in this next coach. So I still think that's a little bit unlikely right now. Not surprised that he got an interview Pat, but still, I don't think he's going to get the gig. Of the candidates
Starting point is 00:04:33 that have been reported to have gotten an interview, Mitch Love will be on the top of my list and Freeman echoed again today that the Penguins really like him, which is great news, by the way. Again, he did really good work with Washington's defense in these last couple of years. He's done really good work in the AHL
Starting point is 00:04:49 with Calgary's affiliate. We did a big, a big, excuse me, breakdown on him on the Wednesday episode. I would have Jay Woodcroft second, Jay Leach third, and then DJ Smith and David Quinn, fourth and fifth. You can talk me into any of those first three. I really do believe that. Bottom two, it would obviously take quite a bit more.
Starting point is 00:05:10 We talked about DJ Smith on Thursday. Pat, I'll hand this back to you since I've probably been rambling a bit too long. Your thoughts on Jay Woodcroft and Jay Leach being named today. You kind of actually echoed a lot of what I wanted to say. The one thing I will add, it does feel like. And what I'm going to say, it's going to have a hint of insidiousness for Kyle Dubus, but I don't mean it that way. It does feel like Kyle Dubus, and this builds on something you said, wants his guy.
Starting point is 00:05:41 And I don't mean that in he didn't like Mike Sullivan, wanted to get rid of him, anything like that. It feels like this is the next logical step for the plan he has put into place for this organization, wanting to do this retool transition on the fly. And it's not a disrespect to Mike Sullivan. We've been over a million times how competitive he is, the respect he has gotten, not just from the Penguins core players, but from a lot of very talented players across the NHL who have crossed paths with him. But it just seems like now the logical next step for Kyle Dubas is to find his guy
Starting point is 00:06:22 who is going to work very closely with him. in this process. I would put my rankings the same exact way as you would. Mitch Love is at the top of my list. He is probably my most preferred candidate. I wouldn't hate Jay Woodcroft. The thing that is interesting to me about Jay Woodcroft, when you bring up his resume, this is a hockey lifer. This is a guy who has been around it forever. He got his start as a coach in the NHL, 0506, Detroit Red Wings. He was a video coach for them for multiple seasons. He moves on to the San Jose Sharks where for several seasons he's an assistant coach.
Starting point is 00:07:07 Then he makes the jump to the Oilers where he's an assistant coach eventually becomes the head coach of the Bakersfield Condors, their HL team. And then he gets the call to the NHL with the Oilers. the other fun thing for me, and this is just a quick aside, he was an assistant coach for maybe my favorite hockey team of all time. Team North America under 23 at the 2016 World Cup of hockey. We miss you. We love you, our sweet child. The overtime still lives rent-free in my head, dude.
Starting point is 00:07:46 That's just crazy. It is one of the best things the NHL has ever done. Then you look at Jay Leach, he really fits into the same mold. We're starting to really see a trend emerge as we expected with these coaching candidates. And that these are guys who have worked, they may have some NHL experience, but they've worked a lot in the minor leagues. Leach was very successful with the Providence Bruins, an overall record of 136, 77, and 26.
Starting point is 00:08:20 cannot be mad at a record like that in the HL, especially in a league where you have an incredible amount of turnover, being able to win nearly 140 games in that time is very impressive. So, yeah, I look at this and I think of the top three right now between Mitch Love, Jay Leach, and Jay Woodcroft, I don't think you can go wrong with any of the three. Yeah, I mean, I would, if you had, if you gave me the choice, and say those three your finalists.
Starting point is 00:08:52 I'm just making this up because I'm sure they've talked to a whole bunch of other people, Pat, this is the first one of interviews. They're probably going to cut this down to a group of finalists, interview those guys, and then make a decision. But say those are the three finalists. I would go with Mitch Love, especially now that the capital season is over. They got, I wouldn't say they got crushed last night, but they lost four to one in this series, at least four games to one.
Starting point is 00:09:15 They lose game five, three to one. So Mitch Love is available now. You could hire him right now because their season is over. I would do Mitch Love first. I would have Jay Woodcroft second, Jay Leach's third. Sure, Mitch Love has not had any NHL head coaching experience, but again, he's done great work for Calgary's AHL affiliate. He's done really good work with the Capitals these last couple of years.
Starting point is 00:09:39 I would give him a shot. Jay Woodcroft. He did good work at least for a little bit with the Oilers. Was he out-coached in the conference final after he took over and they went on a 20-stress? and nine and three run that year. Yes, he was. The Oilers got absolutely crushed in that. And then they make the playoffs to the next year.
Starting point is 00:09:56 Oilers have a really good year. They then lose in the second round. He then gets fired partly because of the goaltending. Pat, the goaltending for Edmonton was atrocious to start that season. Chris Knoblock takes over, gets the goaltending, but also turns that team into a juggernaw, which is where they kind of are today. So Woodcroft, he did good work with them, kind of got done in by goaltending. He still could have worked a little bit.
Starting point is 00:10:19 bit on his exes and nose. But when I was watching the Oilers during those couple of seasons, they really push the play up the ice. Like he played his, his teams play a style of hockey that is fun to watch. So I would be okay with that, see what he's learned from that situation. And then Jay Leach, again, he's never been an NHL full-time head coach, but he's worked in the minors. He's been an assistant coach at the NHL level. You can really talk me into it. So again, those would be my top three as of right now, but we'll have to see what other names come out as well. I'm sure they've talked to a whole bunch of other people during this process. You beat me to the punch on the Woodcroft part.
Starting point is 00:10:59 It's the old Jeff Merrick line of they might as well just call the game of hockey goalie because his ultimate undoing was that he had very poor goaltending. It started to trend back up. No disrespect to knoblock done a great job. But once the goaltending got it figured out, they figured. it out as a whole and here they are now. But that is going to do it for our opening segment. When we come back, we've got to continue our season in review series.
Starting point is 00:11:27 And we will do so looking back on what was a so-so first season for Penguins forward, Blake Lazott. We will do that when we come back. Stick with us. We'll be right back right after this. We got to tell you about today's first sponsor. And that is game time. There is nothing like playoff hockey, the energy, the rivalries, the nonstop action,

All right, welcome back to the Friday edition of Locked on Penguins. I'm Patrick Damp right alongside Hunter Hodes, who is in enemy territory right now.
Starting point is 00:13:44 He is in the Big Apple, New York City, the home of now Mike Sullivan, but we're not here to talk about Mike Sullivan. We've talked about him quite a bit over the past couple of weeks. So let's continue the show with our season and review series for Blake Lazzat. It was a so-so season, as the rundown says for Blake Lazzat, dealt with some injuries, didn't have the best linemates, but still put in a solid performance, at least numerically, 59 games played, 11 goals, nine assists for 20 points. I'll say this much and hand it over to you, Hunter.
Starting point is 00:14:23 For a guy who you want to be ideally your fourth line center, but can fill in sometimes as your third line center, not half bad production for playing less than 60 games. Yeah, I thought he was fine this season. I'll give him, if you want to give me a grade or something like that, B minus C. I think a C is honestly quite fair for him this season. I would go a full B if he had been a bit more consistent.
Starting point is 00:14:49 you look at the counting stats this past season 11 goals 20 points he did have more goals and points they did last season with the los angeles kings his 11 goals is actually tied for his career high which he set in 22 23 with the kings he also had 34 points that season which is a career high for him but i think he just needs more consistent line mates that's the biggest thing man he spent a lot of this season with no la chari who again blocks a lot of shots but he's not that good defensively doesn't put the puck in the back to the net that much yes he's physically physical but once we get to a season review, we'll dive into that a bit more in depth.
Starting point is 00:15:26 But it's just still not the greatest fit at this point for Atari with the Penguins. And then Matt Niotto for a lot of the year was just kind of a shell of his former self, I think. And they kept interchanging his line mates. So when they put decent playdrivers with Wazot, you saw him carry play at times for the Penguins. That needs to be the case heading in. to next season, the final year of that two-year contract that he signed last summer.
Starting point is 00:15:54 They need to give him competent linemates that can really help him in the offensive zone. You know what you're going to get from Lazot in the defensive zone. He can kill penalties, all that stuff. But you also saw that if you put good players with him, he can help drive the offense. Now, the underlines, they need to be a little bit better played in 59 games this season, about 650 minutes of five-on-five ice time. when he was on the ice, the penguin said only about 47% of the shot attempts, which is a lot lower. Actually, the lowest of his career pattern. When you go through and look at some of the
Starting point is 00:16:27 underlines, especially shot attempts, he's never been below 50% until this year. Expected goals, 43% also the lowest of his career. 45% of the scoring chances, the lowest of his career. 43% of the high danger chances, the lowest of his career. Do you see a pattern here, my friend? A, bad line mates, B, not a good team. If you can get him some help, I think you can get his underlines back up to where they have been throughout his career, especially with the Los Angeles King. So I'd give him a B minus, probably, again, let's see if I had to really put like a full letter grade without minuses or pluses. I guess I'd go around the C range. That's about where I am with Lazot season.
Starting point is 00:17:10 I know that 59 games is a solid chunk of hockey, but I would almost. go as far as to say if I didn't have to give him a letter grade, which, you know, there's no law that says, I've got to give a letter grade here on the show. I'm not going to get arrested by the podcast police if I don't. But I'm with you on a C, but I would almost go as far as to say incomplete, just because of the injuries, you miss a solid chunk of games. And you got into exactly what I wanted to say about Blake Lazot. I think he actually did a pretty accurate. admirable job this year considering the mess that he had of linemates, whether it was inconsistent linemates, line mates who weren't that good. One way or the other, I still think being able to put up
Starting point is 00:18:02 double-digit goals, missing all that time, having inconsistencies on his linemates, and really catching a lot of really tough matchups as a third or fourth line center, I'm pretty heartened by his effort this year. He needs to be more consistent. He needs to obviously stay healthy, but he really did kind of live up to the billing that we expected at the start of the year. He was a physical player. He chipped in when he needed to chip in. He brought the intensity. This team had been lacking for quite a while. It didn't rub off as well on his teammates as you would like. But overall, I can't say that I'm disappointed in what I saw from Blake Lassat in his first year. He strikes me as a player that he's 27. He will be 28 around the
Starting point is 00:18:54 midpoint of next year. If he does well, I think he's worth an investment, not for a long time, year, two, three, if you really want to stretch it, depending on how he plays. But he's definitely a player, I would consider holding on to going into the future. They could, but say Pat, maybe he does have a career year next year. They could also look to flip him at the trade down, especially if they are out of the playoff race. And you know GMs, man. They love stacking up on those bottom six centers around the trade deadline.
Starting point is 00:19:28 It will give up quite a bit to get them as well, especially if we see another sellers market like we saw this last year with the prices that were going around, like the prices that even do beset and got back, especially for someone. like Anthony Bavillier, if you do have, say, for example, another seller's market like that, and Lazada is having an even better season, you can sell high on something like that and get an okay return. So I did have to throw that out there for you. But, you know, I wasn't disappointed with them. I just want to see a little bit more consistency. I don't want to see him get a little bit of help because when he did get help, you saw a Ford that can really chip in when needed. I thought
Starting point is 00:20:03 he was one of their top four checkers this year. He's kind of like a wrecking ball when he's on the ice. he's a lot of fun to watch. So, yeah, people may think I'm being harsh with my C grade, but that's just average. He was fine. I don't think he was, or I don't think he exceeded expectations, but I also don't think he was just flat out awful or anything like that. So that's where I get the Lederate grade from. In no world did I think you were disappointed by him.
Starting point is 00:20:28 I don't think our listeners do either, but I do think you can't expect a little more from him. I think if they can find him some younger talent from either trades. the draft or guys who are already in the system next year, put him with, and keep them together for a while. Don't constantly throw his line in a blender. Let them develop some chemistry, see what they're capable of doing together. And I think you'll see a pretty productive forward in Blake Lazot once again.
Starting point is 00:20:56 And being that I'm so caught up in thinking about the contributors of the future, I, you brought up a good point. he does well. A lot of teams, the deadline, who they love themselves, a good bottom six forward. And if you can get some value out of them, can't say I'd be upset about that either. But that'll do it for our middle segment.
Starting point is 00:21:20 When we come back, there was a day quite a few years ago where Sidney Crosby, what would you call the opposite of the broadcaster's curse? I don't know. But we will talk about it when we come back, a fun moment to send you off into the, weekend about Sydney Crosby. We'll do that when we come back right after this. Welcome back into the Friday edition of Locked-on Penguins. I'm Patrick Damp one more time
Starting point is 00:21:53 right alongside Hunter Hodes. And I teased it before we went to break. But I don't know what the opposite of the broadcaster's curse is, but on this day, quite a few years ago when the penguins were making their way to becoming Stanley Cup champions in 2016, Sidney Crosby delivered in the clutchest of most clutch moments for the Pittsburgh Penguins in game two of the Eastern Conference final against the Tampa Bay Lightning. He scores to give the penguins the victory in overtime. But the part I'm talking about Hunter was when this game on NBC, because this is when the league was still with NBC, went to intermission, it seemed like all the panel could talk about before this overtime was. you know who has never scored a playoff overtime winner in his career for all the things that he has done. Sidney Crosby has never scored a playoff overtime winner.
Starting point is 00:22:54 And for some quick context, penguins go up to nothing in the first period. Tampa ultimately ties it in the second period, no goals in the third. And it felt like we were in for a long night. Crosby said no thank you less than a minute no overtime he beats Vasilovsky the penguins tie the series I love that you mentioned that last part because I come up I was watching the game downstairs my mom was watching it upstairs and I go up to talk to her and I'm like what are you thinking and she smiles at me and she goes I think we got this but I think this might be a long game I had obviously school the next day I'm a senior in high school but at that point like I knew I was going to graduate I'm kind of just coasting the finish line. This is the best part about the end of the school year.
Starting point is 00:23:43 The Penguins are going on this really fun run to the Eastern Conference final. I think they have a really good shot of winning the Stanley Cup, and obviously they did. And I was kind of like, yeah, like this feels like it might be a triple or quadruple overtime game goes to, you know, midnight, 12, 30, 1 a.m., that sort of thing. Sidney Crosby's like, nope, I'm going to end that 40 seconds into overtime. And it's funny, I actually heard her jump upstairs a millisecond before. So I was kind of like, oh, crap, I think something happened.
Starting point is 00:24:17 And then sure enough, I went crazy to downstairs when Crosby scored the overtime winner. And that was such a big goal for him just because there were still some people in the hockey Twitter sphere pat being like, oh, he's not clutch. Like obviously he had this in the couple of the time, but it had been, you know, seven years since they had gotten back to a semi-up final before they won this one. the second of the Crosby, Malk, and Latang era. And there were still some people in the hockey media being like, oh, man, he's not as clutch as some of these other players on other teams. He doesn't have that big game stuff and all that. And he just told those people, would have shot the hell up.
Starting point is 00:24:53 And he got that overtime winner. Such a big goal for him, such a big goal, obviously, for the Penguins. And what a rip that was, by the way. Just an awesome goal, especially when the Penguins needed it and ties up the series. and obviously the rest was history, but that was such a fun goal during that run. Obviously, you know, the Benino goals and the calls especially were great, but I think that goal still gets underrated by some to the same.
Starting point is 00:25:23 By the way, it's crazy that's been nine meters since that goal was scored. Time really does fly when you're having fun, my friend. But just such a great goal, especially when the Penguins needed it. That Tampa team, I know the Penguins, ones were the better team in that series. But Vasselowski, man, he was sensational. That was his big coming out party for some people that may not remember, because Ben Bishop got hurt in game one, and you could hear the screen coming from the TV in the arena. Like, that was really bad. But Vasselowski comes in, and I remember at the time, man, like, I'm like, who the heck is this dude?
Starting point is 00:26:00 Like, he's just some regular run-of-the-mill backup. Like, I'm an 18-year-old dude. I don't know who this guy is. You know who he was after that because we've seen what he's done since then, Pat, arguably the best goaltender in the league. He gave them chance after chance to stay in that series and not only stay in the series, win the series. He was that freaking good for the lightning. So again, he was great, but just what a shot from Sid when the penguins needed it most. It was a huge goal for multiple reasons. One, Crosby was in the middle of an eight game goalless streak in the playoffs up to that point. Obviously, the penguins had been doing really well, but they weren't getting a ton of
Starting point is 00:26:40 production, at least goals from Cid. And they lose that game. They completely surrender home ice advantage because they had lost game one. They lose game two. They're down 02 going to Tampa. And we obviously all think of Tampa Bay of the last five to six years, where they went on all their runs, did everything that they did. This was the same deal for the.
Starting point is 00:27:04 this Tampa team. They were the defending Eastern Conference champions. They had lost the 2015 final to the Blackhawks the year prior. And they were on a mission to get back. And they were a really, really good team. And Crosby doesn't score there. We're probably not talking about back-to-back championships. It would have ended what would have been a pretty phenomenal run by the Penguins in 2016. Because once Sullivan took over, after his first first five games. That team flipped a switch and they were just running roughshod over the league, over the Eastern Conference, and they looked almost inevitable. And then they run into a Tampa team that gave them all that they could handle. The other last, the other, one of the thing I
Starting point is 00:27:51 did want to mention, you brought up where you were. I was still working for the nailers at the time. And this was the year that both the penguins and the nailers made it to the finals. So I was was just kind of hanging out by myself after a game at my apartment in West Virginia because we had a game the next day. So I had to get ready to go to the arena. I had to be ready for an early game day so I could get the arena set up, make sure everything in my job duties were done. And I'm sitting there thinking, of course, this is going to be a three overtime game. I'm going to be exhausted tomorrow. I'm going to need like four coffees and two Red Bulls, just to make it to game time. And Crosby does me a nice service, scores 40 seconds in,
Starting point is 00:28:39 ends the game, I go to bed happy. And I mean, it's, it was just another moment in what was such a fun run for that team to the Stanley Cup final. And if you don't remember the goal, go look it up on YouTube. I'm pretty sure Crosby's shot defied the laws of physics because it had no business going in, but it sure did. And what a moment, Hunter, anything you want to add before we wrap up today's show? Honestly, not really. Again, that's probably the most fun season I've ever had watching this team, especially after Sullivan took over. Man, just what a run it was. And again, that goal was absolutely sensational. That was also just such a fun series against Tampa Bay. They really gave the Penguins everything they could handle. I mean, I remember going into Game 7,
Starting point is 00:29:32 of that series. I was like, hey, even if the penguins lose tonight, this has still been one heck of a season. Obviously, I never wanted that to happen. And thank God it didn't because that was the start of the penguins back to back up run. But still, that's probably the most fun season I've ever had, you know, watching this team every single night. So yeah, what a moment. And I can't believe it's been nine years. Unbelievable. That is going to do it, though, for the Friday edition of the Locked-on Penguins. Thank you so much for hanging with us this week and all the updates that have been coming in on the Penguins coaching search. We will obviously keep our ears to the ground and bring you any news that we hear,
Starting point is 00:30:11 as well as continue our season and review series. And I think next week, keep your eye on our YouTube and our socials because we're probably going to debut a new segment that you can get involved in, but we'll debut that next week. So for Hunter Hodes, I'm Patrick Dam. Thank you once again for tuning in. And we will be back with a brand new episode for you on Monday. Enjoy the weekend. And we will talk to you later.
