Somehow, some way the Pittsburgh Penguins are officially alive in the series against the Flyers.
And Pat and I are going to recap Monday's game five coming up right after this.

Of course, thank you all so much for making this your first lesson slash watch of the day.
We are free and available on all platforms.
To start the show, Pat and I are going to talk about how the Penguins were able to win their second game in this series,
forcing Game 6, before getting into the depth players that really stepped up
in this game and then to end the show pat and i are going to glaze cindy crosby some more because he was
magnificent last night but pat you're a metallica guy right so you know ride the lightning oh yeah
that might be my favorite metallic album when i quickly think about it it's up there but i don't
want to interrupt your flow here yes so that's what the penguins are doing right now these last
two games they're riding the lightning and they have gotten themselves right there's
back into this series. I also want to shout out the PBJ Paints Arena crowd last night.
At least for the TV, that's got to be one of the loudest crowds I've heard in several years.
I can only imagine how loud it was for everyone that was in the building.
So, kudos to all the fans who came out for that game.
But Pat, even though the Penguins had a bit of a slow start, they were really testing
already she loves in the first five or so minutes.
I loved the way they responded, especially for the rest of the game.
And that first goal is a perfect illustration of.
of what I have been wanting them to do throughout the series.
What do they do, Pat?
They dumped it deep.
Anthony Mantha, went to work, beat his man, fed out to the high slot, boom, puck is in
the back of the net.
That is the way you beat this system at five on five.
Work it deep.
You go to low, beat one on their defensemen, get to the slot area, those high danger
areas, boom.
And going off that, Pat, last night I feel like was the first true game where they finally got
to those high danger areas.
At 5-on-5, they finished with 12 high-danger chances.
That has not been the case in a lot of these games so far,
where they just have not been getting to the high-danger areas squat,
but they finally started doing it last night,
and they really tested Lidar.
And what do you know?
He only allowed three goals.
He did make a couple of really big saves in this one,
but the Penguins were finally getting to their game a lot more last night.
And I also thought the way they defended,
especially in the third period, was clinical.
That is two third-period.
periods in a row where they have completely locked things down, not allowed the flyers to do much of
anything. This was a complete team performance from everyone last night. We're going to get into
some shoutouts a bit later on in the show, Pat, but that is where I want to start. A complete
team performance from everyone on the ice and a picture perfect third period when playing with
the lead. Through three games, we were pretty critical, rightfully so of the way the penguins
were playing in this series. You go down 3-0 in the fashion that they did.
and it was a lot of questioning of just about everybody on the roster,
including the coaching staff.
In the last two games, however, they have seemed to turn the ship around in a way.
You mentioned the first goal of the night from Elmer Soderblum.
Congratulations to him on his first Stanley Cup playoff goal.
That's got to feel great.
Anthony Mantha made that happen.
But to your point, the thing I noticed last night,
and it started to show up in game four,
really showed up in game five is they have broken through this flyers defensive system.
And while they deserve a lot of credit, I do have to give some negative marks to the
Flyers because they're playing and now they're playing into what the Penguins are trying to do.
The reason that the Penguins were able to get so many high danger looks,
especially with extended zone time, is a lot of the Flyers defenders, both forwards and
defensemen are getting fixated on the puck and the penguins are pulling them deeper,
which is opening up that middle of the ice. It's opening up those high danger lanes and the
penguins are taking what the flyers are giving them. There were a lot of times early in the series
where I would watch the penguins get the puck deep and they would immediately look to the point
and I was watching it and going, that's not open. They're not giving you that. The last two games,
they're pulling the Flyers defenders deeper, and it's opening up the points.
It's opening up the high slot.
And at times it's opening up right in front of Ladar.
So if the Penguins can continue with this forecheck into the next game,
I'm not going to make any predictions.
I'm not going to say put your deposits down for game seven.
But this is a successful formula.
and until the flyers give you a reason to deviate from it, keep doing it.
The thing is, they're forcing the flyers to open up more because they're also playing with
a lead a lot more. That's now three games in a row where you have played with the lead.
The last two, they have basically led slash tied the entire time.
Game four, Pat, they were in the lead the entire time.
Game five, there was a time where they were tied for a little bit before the Penguins took the
lead back, but for the most part, they played with a lead for most of that game.
and in turn, that has to allow the flyers to open up,
which I think does play into the Penguins' hands
because, you know, you saw during the regular season,
third most goals scored in the league.
If you can get them to get away from their trap a little bit,
they can potentially be vulnerable in transition,
and you have seen that these last couple of games,
especially in game five in Pittsburgh.
Now, Pat, I still don't know if they're going to pull this off.
It's a miracle for a reason.
You still have to win two more games in this series.
There's a reason why that it's just only been done four times.
but I think at the very least they've made the Flyers a little nervous going back to Philly
and this will be a game that at only the Flyers ever wanted to play.
Yeah, it's going to be raucous there.
You know the Philly fans are going to bring it.
It's going to be very loud.
But you saw in Game 5 the Flyers that to me felt like they were gripping their sticks a little too tight.
And I think they're still going to be nervous for Game 6 because the Penguins,
they're going to try to drag this series right back to Pittsburgh for a winner take all Saturday night,
primetime.
I know there's no, you know, start time yet.
We all know it's going to be prime time on Saturday if the Penguins do win on Wednesday.
But going away from that, Pat, another player I really want to shout out,
and he deserves all the kudos in the world.
Chris LaTang, what a performance on Monday night.
That is his second straight, fantastic game for the Penguins.
He has turned back the clock.
He is now the oldest player, not named Gary Roberts or Matt Cullen,
to score a game-winning postseason goal for the Pittsburgh
Penguins. And yeah, his game winner last night, let's say it, Pat, it's a devil magic
bounce. That is what it is. It's a bounce from the hockey gods. You can call it that too.
It's a lucky goal, but the Penguins will take it, especially when you're down 3-1 facing
elimination. But even outside of the goal, he is making every right decision. He is pinching
well. He is exiting the zone with control. He has been great on the penalty kill. He has been great
in all situations for this team for the last two games, and I can't say enough about it.
Him and Gerard, they have turned it around in the last two games.
They have to keep that going, but I have liked both of their games immensely over the last
two nights. They have, there's not a ton for me to add. They are making the right decisions.
The biggest thing I have noticed from both of them, and it was something that was plaguing Gerard
more than it was La Tang.
Latang has had his issues this season.
I think a lot of it, unfortunately,
is father time catching up with Chris LaTang.
The problem I've seen with Gerard throughout the season
since he was acquired and came to Pittsburgh,
he was just trying to do too much.
He was just trying that one extra move,
the one extra pass,
skating one extra step too far,
trying to spin off of four checkers.
the last two games and when Gerard has been effective in the regular season for the Penguins,
he's playing simple.
He's just taking what the game gives him.
And that honestly has been an underrated part of the Penguins success,
not just in these two games,
but throughout the regular season in getting them into the postseason,
the Penguins have not done anything overly complicated.
They have played a straightforward simple game.
and it's brought them results.
That really, and we're going to have a preview episode up tomorrow,
is really how they have to approach the rest of this series,
however long it goes, is just play simple.
Take what the flyers give you.
Don't try to overthink it.
Don't try to do one thing too slick or one step too many.
Just take what the game gives you, play it right in front of you,
it's brought you success all year.
You might as well stick with it now.
Right, and we also have to give credit to Dan Muses as well.
You and I, Pat, we were pretty harsh on him those first three games because he was getting badly outcoached by Rick Tocket.
But slowly but shortly, he has made a couple of adjustments.
Some in-game adjustments for a roster configuration, changing the goalie, by the way, Artie Shilov.
Shout out to him again last night, Pat.
I didn't like the first goal, but he made a lot of really big saves, especially late.
Porter Martone won, his biggest one of the night, in my opinion.
He was a brick wall to start the game.
Really nice start once again from Artie.
He's going to get the game six start, for obvious reasons.
But Dan Mews, shout out to him for these last two games.
He has made some adjustments.
He has also been able to have the Penguins play very stingy defense in their own zone,
kind of setting up their own little trap in a way,
but he's also found ways to break through the flyer system.
So again, it's two games, Pat.
You're back into it.
There's still a steep hill decline.
right now, I do like the job that Dan Muse is doing to help get the penguins back into this series.
But I think that's going to do it for this first segment.
Coming up in the second segment, well, Pat, the depth finally answered the call in game five,
and they'll need a lot more from the debt players if they want to pull off this miracle comeback.
Pat and I are going to talk about which debt players stepped up coming up right after this.
But before we get to that, we have to tell you all about our first sponsor,
which is Indeed. Workplace chaos, deadline stacking up, inbox is overflowing, and the one

All right, we're back here on the Tuesday edition of Locked-on Penguins podcast.
I'm one of your host, Hunter Hodes, joined by my co-Coh's Pat.
I love that the Penguins are continuing to feed us more content.
No early exit, at least for this series.
Again, anything can still happen on Wednesday.
Again, there's a reason why it is so hard to reverse sleep a team,
but at the very least, they have made it interesting.
and that's all we can ask for in this series,
at least with the way they started it overall.
But Pat, the debt players were great last night.
I loved the fourth line in particular.
What a racket of a shot by Connor Dewar to make it 2-0.
Went in and out so fast that you had no idea.
Then it went to the back of the net.
But as the old saying goes, the players always know.
And Connor Dewar knew it right away.
Just a beautiful shot right past Dan Vlodar.
And St.
Crosby, great keep at the line.
Connor Dewar finishes it off with that shot.
I thought Blake Lazot was a one-man wrecking crew in this game.
I thought Noah Chari was especially great on the penalty kill.
But Pat, it was the third line that finally came alive.
Elmer Osloblam.
You said, congratulations to him.
His first career playoff goal.
Anthony Mantha, welcome to the series.
It took five games for him to make his mark.
But I thought he was really good for the Penguins last night.
And slowly but surely, Ben Kindle,
is starting to find his way into the series a bit more as well.
I thought that was by far his best game of the series last night.
I made a couple of good defensive plays.
Had a really good chance late in the third.
Ladar better save.
He was coming down the right side.
Try to go far aside on Vladar,
but he just made the save.
He was making a couple of really nice saves overall last night.
But he has slowly but surely found his way into the series.
And Pat, they have needed their depth to step up,
and they're going to need it even more if they want to pull this off.
That was kind of the biggest problem through the first three games.
And there was a long list of problems through the first three games.
But one of the biggest was the fact that outside of their top six,
nobody was really playing well.
And even their top six wasn't playing all that well.
They were just getting on the board in one way or the other in those losses.
Last night, I mean, we, you talked about the devil magic of Chris Latang's winning goal.
It was Joe Lewis Arena-esque magic, where a puck bounces off the end boards, hits the goalie, and goes in.
But you look at last night, Elmer Soderblum and Connor Dewar are the other goal scorers.
They didn't have to lean on Crosby and Malkin in Latang and Carlson.
They got contributions from their bottom six.
And I loved both of the third and fourth lines game last night.
They obviously get their flowers for each line recording a goal,
but it was everything else that they did.
The fourth line last night were dogs on a bone all night long.
Anytime they were on the ice,
they were taking it to the Flyers defensemen in the offensive zone.
And I am reminded of Paul Maurice when he was miced up a couple years ago
with the Florida Panthers,
where he said,
just because you guys are up and I'm going to heavily edit,
this because there's a lot of language in that miced-up segment we can't use on this show.
But he basically told his forwards, keep pounding their D.
So when you get to game seven, they're exhausted.
And you could see that from both the third and fourth lines.
They played a straightforward, simple game.
They put the puck in the corner.
And if there was an opportunity to throw a hit on the forecheck on their defensemen,
they took it.
And that's big because the more you do that, the more hesitant their defense,
are going to become. They're going to look over their shoulders. They might not make the
complicated play. They might just kind of rim it along the boards because they know a four checkers
coming for them. So along with the production, the way they played both in the offensive zone
and defensively was a big positive for the penguins going into game six. I agree. And just going
off that couple other players that I did want to shout out depth-wise that I thought had good games.
I thought Ryan Shea was once again really good. He was exiting the zone.
really well. Playing also
really well defensively
on the third pair. I thought in the
moments that we got him, Ilya Soloviov
was steady in his own zone, but
they're not playing him as much. They're kind of
hiding him for a good chunk
at the game, Pat. They're
playing most of these last couple of games with five
defensemen. I don't know how much longer
you're going to be able to do that. I think you're going to have to get
a little bit more from Soloviov.
But in the minutes that we
got from him, I thought he was pretty solid.
Ryan Shea, as the series
has gone on. He has gotten stronger. So I wanted to shout him out as well. I still want to see more from
Igor Chinochinov. I'm hopeful that the breakout is coming because he got at least a couple other
chances last night. But again, Pat, he just needs to hit the net. I think once one hopefully goes in
in this series, hopefully on Wednesday, the damn might start to break for him. But he just can't hit
anything right now. He's getting the chances. He just can't hit the net at all. This is kind of,
these are two things that I think are kind of linked right now that I'm going to say.
I agree with the Chinikov point that it kind of feels like he's building towards finding that
first point, that first goal. And when it goes in, it's going to go in. And like I said on
yesterday's episode, I worry about guys like Chinikov when the chances stop coming. The chances are
still there for him. He's just got to find the net. And I mean that quite literally. He keeps missing
the net. It's not a matter of scoring. He needs to hit the net, period. But I also relate it to the top
power play, which once again was not great last night. But I look at both of them in the same vein
as they are very clearly suffering from a crisis of confidence. It's going to take a goal or two for
them to really dig out of it. I looked at especially the last power play that the penguins had
in game five.
They were playing not to make a mistake rather than playing to score.
And that is a unit that is suffering from a confidence crisis.
They pop one or two in game six.
I do think that power play finds it swagger a little bit.
And the same thing goes for Chinikov.
He finds himself a goal in game six.
He's going to look like the Chinikov we saw in the regular season.
Unfortunately, it sounds like a lot of,
I'm making excuses, but when you have this happening with talented players in talented units,
the only real option in front of you is to let them work through it rather than to dismantle
them. Yeah, I think with the power play, I feel like I'm just running out of things to say at this
point, too much playing patty cake, they're overpassing, there's not as much of a shoot-verse
mentality. That's the biggest thing I continue to notice in this series, Pat. They're just not
shooting the puck enough on the power play, which is a far crunch.
from what they were doing for most of the season
where they had way more of a shoot-first mentality.
And I might say something that's a little controversial here.
That's fine.
If the power play was even average in this series for the Penguins,
I think they are the ones that are up three-two,
going back to Philadelphia.
It's just been that bad in this series.
And a lot of it is just they're doing bad.
Like, the zone entries have not been very good.
Even when they do gain the zone,
they're just passing the puck around,
too much perimeter play.
They're not getting to the high danger areas, and they're not shooting the puck.
You know, you and I have we talked so much about, you know, changing configurations and all this other stuff, but they're just not getting back to basics.
No, they aren't.
I will give them this, though, for Monday night.
I did like that they were moving the puck and moving bodies more on Monday night.
We saw in game four, even though that they got the win, the power play was just stagnant.
They were just kind of getting to a spot, not really moving, moving the puck around the perimeter,
turning it over.
At least on Monday night, you can see them getting back to that form where guys were moving,
guys were hunting pucks.
That was something that had been missing through the first four games.
But in no world is the power play fixed.
In no world is the power play operating well.
But they at the very least in game five took.
steps to get back to where they need to go.
There are other tweaks they need to make, and I will continue to say the biggest
tweak they can make is to score a goal or two just to get that confidence back because
it is without a doubt, just completely shot.
And what's interesting is that they scored three power play goals in the two games in
Philly.
You think that, oh, maybe that gets their confidence going.
Nope, not at all.
Power play is still just an absolute mess.
but before we get to the final segment,
I touched on him in the first segment.
I want to give you an opportunity here to discuss
the play of Artie Shilov's back.
Thought he was once again great last night.
The first goal, I think he would want back.
I think any goal that gave up that goal would want that back.
I do think Parker Watherspoon could have played that a bit better too
because I think he fell asleep there.
But that is now two games in a row where overall
already has played really well.
And as I said, Pat, you're riding or dying with him at this point.
he has to start game six.
Oh, absolutely.
I don't see any other reason why not to start him.
And before I get into Sheelves real quick,
why not dance with the date that brought you to the prom in this regard?
The Penguins found some success by basically having a goaltending tandem all year.
I said it going into the playoffs.
This might be the year we see not just the penguins,
but a bunch of teams that got to the postseason with a tandem lean on it.
Because, yeah, the conventional wisdom is, oh, you got, you got to have a number one goalie going into the playoffs.
And while, yes, the evidence shows you that.
It's also just something that everybody has done.
And it's not a shot at Skinner.
I said it on the earlier show that his game didn't decline over three, but you could see dips with each game.
So why not go to Artie Shilovs and see what he can do?
And the first goal, not great, but the rest of the night, he shut the door when he needed to.
He made a lot of big saves in moments when the flyers were pressing.
In the third period, he didn't face a lot of work.
But when he did, he was there to make the save.
And this is kind of the story of the series, I think, is that for both teams,
you've got goalies who can make the saves when they need to make them.
But there's always one extra goal lurking.
for both of them.
Ladar has played really well,
but there has been a couple of goals.
And I'm not going to count Latang's.
La Tangs is just bad luck.
But Raquel's in game four.
And with Sheelovs and Skinner,
they're making the saves they need to make,
but there's always one waiting for you.
So this does feel like which of these two goalies
is going to make that save and which one isn't.
I can see it, you know,
already has played well at times in the playoffs when the stakes are really high.
You've seen that at times in Vancouver.
You obviously saw it last year in Abbotsford in the HL.
Let's see if he can keep it up on Wednesday for game six,
but that's going to do it for the second segment.
Coming up to end the show, it's time.
Cindy Crosby was sensational on Monday night,
and Pat and I, we got to talk about it.
That's coming up right after this.
But before we get to that,
we have to tell you all about our second sponsor,
which is Warby Parker. Spring is here, weddings, trips, rooftop hangouts, basically a lot more
photos getting taken. And if you wear glasses, you're wearing them at all of those moments. So if you
don't love your frames, you feel it pretty quickly. And that's where Warby Parker helps out.
They have completely changed how easy it is to find glasses you actually like. Their virtual try on
lets you see how frames look on your face right from your phone, just point your camera, and you can
try on tons of styles in real time. I had an eye appointment last week. I picked out a new pair
glasses for Robie Parker and the whole process was very easier than what I have dealt with before.
I was able to try on different styles virtually and actually feel confident in what I chose
before ordering the frames, they look great, they feel high quality, and I've already gotten
compliments wearing them out.
And honestly, for the price, it's hard to beat.
Prescription glasses start at just $95, so you're not just sacrificing style or quality.

supercast.com. So, all right, Pat, let's get into it. Sydney Crosby gave us another injury scare last night,
taking the puck off of a knee from a Ryan Shea shot, went down the tunnel briefly, came back,
looked totally fine, and he was a man on a mission last night. He has officially arrived in
this series. He's not allowing the penguins to go down without a fight. He has been arguably
the best player on the ice these last two games, and it's not even just that he had two assess last
night. He's doing the little things. He's getting back in his own zone. He's winning some crucial
draws late in games. He has been great along the boards. He is being physical. He is doing everything
possible to will the penguins back into this series and every other player is following his lead.
It took him a little bit to get going. The first three games, Pat, he was completely shut down.
But in these last two, this is the Sydney Crosby that we have grown accustomed to seeing in the Stanley
Cup playoffs and everyone on this team is feeding off of it.
These are the reasons in the things that make him one of the best players of all time,
because the points will always be there, the goals will always be there.
It's everything else around it.
He is dragging the penguins back into the fight,
and it's because he is doing all of those little things.
It's because he is playing very good defensive hockey the last two games.
when his line was out there last night, they locked it down.
They did not give the Flyers much of anything.
It was either one or done or it was nothing.
You said it.
He won especially late with the Penguins holding onto a one-goal lead and the Flyers pressing.
He was winning defensive zone draws to give them possession and killing time off of the clock.
He was obviously blocking shots, even though one of them was friendly fire.
But he almost scored.
what would have been a highlight real goal on the empty net where he dove in highlight the pot
down the ice trying to ice the game and if that goes half of an inch the other way into the
net we're talking about that this morning and not and not much else but i loved his game last
night and here's the thing they caught him miced up at the end of the game when they were
celebrating and he goes to art or she loves and says great job
we're not done.
That is a man who is motivated and has his eyes on the prize.
So if I'm the Philadelphia crowd on Wednesday night,
I might avoid the Crosby sucks chance because that is a man who is really motivated
and you probably don't want to give him anything else.
Pat, you say that now.
We all know that's not happening.
There's going to be Crosby sucks chance.
It's a Philly tradition.
at this point. It's been going on for 20 years. You and I both know, that's not going to happen.
You're going to see some signs from fans in the crowd with, you know, I'm sure old pictures of them crying or something like that.
It's going to be a madhouse there. And I wouldn't expect anything different.
It's Philadelphia. And this is how they do for their sports teams, whether it's the Eagles, the Phillies,
flyers, or even the 76ers in the NBA. This out is. So that ain't changing. You're going to hear plenty of Cosby.
you're going to hear him get booed plenty of times.
Honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way.
He, you know, he does feed off of it.
He loves it, but that's not changing, you know, until he retires.
So you have that, but he also went to work down low.
His line is really starting to grind out some of the flyers that are on the ice.
And that's also been a big development in these last two games.
They're getting a lot of extended zone time.
in the offensive zone. Brian Rust almost had a highlight real goal last night.
It was made possible by some really strong forechecking by that top line.
Rickel is getting a couple of really nice chances in his own.
Obviously, had that goal in game four.
He is playing well, but it all starts and ends with the play of Captain Cindy Crosby.
Again, he is dragging this team back into the fight.
Yes, they have a long way to go if they want to win this and make NHL history.
but he has woken up here.
And, you know, that could be nerve-wracking for the Flyers and their fans.
So, again, that can't say enough about the way that he is playing.
Do you have anything else to add about Crosby or anything else about the game or the series in general?
It's more his line that I want to add on this.
It's a drum that I have beaten since the start of the series.
making sure you have that line of Crosby, Rust, and Raquel together is a huge key to finding
victories in this series because they have the ability to grind you into dust.
And you saw that in game five.
They got their chances.
They had their moments.
They didn't get on the score sheet.
But the fact of the matter is they did get on the score sheet, but I digress.
The thing that stood out most to me was they.
owned the offensive zone, whether it was down low, up high, right in front.
They did what they need to do for the penguins to beat the Flyers.
And we love highlight real goals.
We love when they do all the crazy moves and the, the tick, tack, toe passing.
But the way the Crosby line is going to beat the Flyers is to just grind their bones into
dust.
Pucks in deep, hitting them in the corners, possessing the puck behind the net,
making them chase you and they did that in game five.
If they can do that in game six,
I like their chances,
but we got a preview episode coming tomorrow.
Yeah,
and maybe we'll talk about how the Penguins
have still not had that big explosive offensive game yet.
Could that be coming in Game Six bad?
Well,
everyone has to stay tuned for that
because that's going to be part of our preview episode
coming on Wednesday as the Penguins try to tie up this series
and force a game seven back in Pittsburgh on
Saturday. But as I keep saying, one shift at a time, one period at a time, one game at a time.
They're back in it. They still have a lot of work to do if they want to pull off this miracle here.
But that's going to do it for the Tuesday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast.
Thank you all so much for time to listen to slash watch this one. Pat and I will be back
with a fresh episode for you all on Wednesday. Previewing Game 6 and giving some keys to
victory for how the penguins can bring the series back to Pittsburgh for a winner take
all game seven this weekend. So for Patrick Damp, I am Hunter Hodes. Thank you all so much
for tuning in. We appreciate it. We'll be back on Wednesday.
