Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins - The Penguins take on the NHL's HOTTEST team before the trade deadline
Episode Date: March 5, 2026Before the NHL trade deadline, the Penguins will take on the league's hottest team: The Buffalo Sabres. Patrick and Hunter begin the show taking a look at the league's hottest team - and this is not a... typo - the Buffalo Sabres. What has led to the success of the Sabres so far this year? Well, just about everything from their forward depth to their defense, and even some great goaltending performances. (0:00) Then, they shift the focus to the Penguins, who got some good news this morning as it appears Blake Lizotte's absence is just one game and he is set to return tonight. They give their keys to victory, as well as a Sidney Crosby update. (12:54) Finally, the trade deadline is less than a day away, and for the Penguins, they have plenty of options, but which would be the smartest? We've got just about 24 hours until the NHL trade deadline.
and as every single media person, writer, podcaster, you name it, will tell you, yes, deals can be announced after 3 o'clock on trade deadline day.
They just have to be to Central Registry before 3 o'clock.
So if you see some penguins moves at 3.30 on Friday, don't be overly surprised.
But as we sit here recording this on Thursday, still no big moves or any.
moves for the Pittsburgh Penguins, but they do have a game to play tonight.
7 o'clock at PPG paints arena.
It is a nationally televised game on ESPN when they will welcome the Buffalo Sabres to
PPG Paints Arena.
And still doesn't feel right saying it, Hunter.
This is a really, really good Buffalo Sabres team.
They have been crushing it 7-2-1 in their last 10.
they are on a four-game winning streak against Vegas, Tampa, Florida, and the Devils.
So three pretty good teams, well, two in two.
Florida, I'm just chalking that up to injury and fatigue.
That roster is still pretty good.
They're done, though.
They're not.
Yeah, they're just hurt and tired, but on paper, still a very good team.
Vegas, they're not bad.
Tampa, they're right back to be in Tampa.
devils and Panthers, though, going through it.
Believe it or not, the last Sabres loss was the pre-Olympic loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins
when the penguins beat them five to two.
So Hunter, they have shown that they can beat this Sabres team,
but they cannot overlook them.
Yeah, this Sabers team is really good, man.
And they're going to be a playoff team this year.
Earlier this week, you saw that crowd against Vegas at the end of the game.
That's one of the best Sabers crowds I've seen in probably 10,
15 years. This fan base is ready for playoff hockey. It's one of the top fan bases in the sport.
And they're also being aggressive at the trade deadline. They were trying to get Robert Thomas.
Doesn't look like that's happening right now. They almost got Colton Pareko, but Perico's like,
nah, I don't really want to waive my no trade clause to go to Buffalo, even though the Sabres,
again, are in a better spot right now than the Blues. Praikos still said, hey, I don't really
want to go there. But, you know, for the Penguins, they've beaten the Sabres twice already this season.
they've outscored them nine to four combined in those two games.
And that last game against Buffalo, that five to win in early February.
I feel like that's one of the most complete performances of the season for the Penguins.
The way that they play defensively against them was outstanding.
I felt they did a great job limiting the chances to the outside.
And even when Buffalo was pushing at times,
Ardysh was right there to make some really big saves.
Yeah, the first one that he allowed to open the scoring early in the first period,
not a good goal to allow,
but after that, he really settled in
and locked things down for the penguins
and again, got a lot of help from his defensemen in front of them.
So you're going to have to see a pretty similar
defensive performance to what you saw in early February
where the penguins were making quick, simple decisions,
exiting the zone with control,
and they were also forechecking the hell out of the sabres.
They also utilized some quick strike offense
that you saw, especially from Avery Hay,
that is also a key for me in this one.
It is good news that the Penguins will be getting back.
Blake Lazade it looks like tonight.
He was a full participant during the morning skate was on the fourth line with
Noah Chari and Connor Dewar.
Again, man, this is a completely different team when he is in the lineup.
I know that may sound weird to say or here if you're listening slash watching this,
of course, it's because he's a bottom six player.
Trust me, though, the way that he plays, the way that he drags this team into the fight,
he makes a big difference.
He's huge for the pagan.
His return is going to be pretty big.
But, you know, for the Sabers, all starts with their high-end talent.
They do have 10 players with double-digit goals, but their best players are playing
like their best players.
Tage Thompson, he has over 30 goals.
Rasmus Dahlene, he is excellent in all three zones, has over 50 points.
He is playing like a top five defenseman on the planet this year.
Alex Tuck has been really good.
Agniqui going down the list, if you want me to.
But their best players have been damn good in everyone.
is performing at a high level for that team.
Yeah, this is a genuinely great team.
They have pretty good high-end talent.
Their young stars have taken the next steps to becoming real game-breaking players,
and it's showing in the stats.
You said it, Tage Thompson, 33 goals, 64 points in 61 games.
Alex Tuck, not far behind them.
60 games, 52 points, 24 goals.
Josh Dohn, having himself,
a pretty good season as well with 18 goals in 40 points.
And you brought this up.
You said his name.
Rasmus Dahlene, man.
He was looking like another in a long list of high Sabres draft picks that just weren't going to pan
out.
Or at the very least,
we're going to have to leave Buffalo to really hit that ceiling.
That part, I kind of understand.
The first part,
I was going to disagree with you on because he's been good.
since entering the lead really good.
This year though, he has taken that next step.
53 points in 57 games.
He is one of the better defensemen in the entire league.
So for the Sabres, you said it as well.
This is a great fan base.
This is a great hockey city and they deserve to have a really good team.
And they finally, at least for now, looks like they're finally getting paid off for all
their loyalty and we'll keep the focus on the savers for the opening segment.
We'll talk a little bit more about the penguins in our middle segment and then to end the show when we talk about the impending trade deadline.
But our favorite name is going to be between the pipes for the Sabres tonight.
In net at PPG Paints Arena for the Sabres will be Uca Pecha-Lukinen, one of the best names in the sport.
and silly name aside.
He's having himself a nice little year.
13-7 and 2 record 2.62 goals against average
and a 908 save percentage to go along with it.
He, this honestly, one of the things you can say about the Sabres,
they had a myriad of problems leading up to this year.
And a lot of those problems have seemed to have been solved.
But one of the biggest ones was they did not have goaltending for the longest time.
And this year, they went from having what looked like no goalies to basically having three.
So it's a legitimate strength.
Him and Alex Lyon combined for a three even goals against average in a 901 save percentage in two shutouts on the season.
These guys are good and mix it with the high end talent, them playing well and just feeding off that momentum.
This is going to be a challenge for the Penguins tonight.
I agree.
They're both both the goaltenders, Ukapeka Luka.
and Alex Lion are top 25 in the league in terms of goals saved above expected.
Peke Luka is 25th overall, 5.3 goals hit above expected, and then Lion is ninth overall with 13.6.
He's behind some pretty good company.
Igor Shisterkin is in front of them, obviously, Andre Vaselewski, Jeremy Swamon,
Ilya Seroqin, who's probably going to win the Vesna, Logan Thompson, the likes of those goalies.
So he's in some pretty good company this season.
won't be Alex Lyon, obviously for this one.
The Penguins were able to get to him in that last one.
The Peke Luchinin, he said, man, he's having a good year.
And as a whole, their team's Sabresendant just year is 908.
So not only are they getting saves, but they're getting the scoring.
Some of their underlines are a bit below average.
Their expected goal share is, you know, 18th in the league at 5 on 5.
But they're outperforming that.
Their actual, well, they're outperforming their expected goal share is what I'm trying to say.
Their actual goals for rate is in the top 10 overall in the league.
So they're scoring.
They defend well and they get the saves.
So this is going to be a really tough outing,
especially without the services of Captain Cindy Crosby.
But again, for the Penguins,
it's all about treading water until he comes back.
You're two and one in one.
You have points in three of the four games.
Just continue to get points whenever you can.
That is what's most important.
He's back on the ice skating.
He's been skating in Cranberry the last couple of days.
There was a rumor I saw a couple weeks of not a week ago, but a few days ago that he was skating last weekend when the penguins were on the road.
So he's in that next phase of his recovery and hopefully over the next couple of weeks, they can get him back.
Until then, it's all about just getting as much point, many, as many points as you can until that happens.
It's huge.
And this is a game where if you take this one to overtime, no big deal.
It's not an indivision game.
Just keep stacking points, do what you can do while you're waiting for Sydney Crosby to return.
But two points would be nice.
Speaking of Crosby's return and Lizott's return, we have got plenty more to talk about when it comes to the Pittsburgh Penguins,
as we get you ready for penguins and Sabres tonight at PPG Paints Arena.
So stick with us and we'll talk more about this game when we come back right after this.
Before we do that, though, we've got to tell you about today's first sponsor.

We're back here on the Thursday edition of Locked-on Penguins.
I'm Patrick Damp right alongside Hunter Hodes.
You brought up Sidney Crosby.
He did skate today before morning skate.
He has been getting some session in at UPMC Lemieux.
So that is very good news for the penguins, considering we're just going to operate under the
assumption that it's a knee injury. That's kind of what the consensus is, even though the penguins
won't say it and all that jazz. But the fact that he's got his skates on, the fact that he's moving,
that shows us progress. It shows we're getting closer to him coming back. And of course,
tonight they get back Blake Lazot. It looks like full participant in the morning skate ahead of
the game. And I'll say this. A big thing that led to
the penguin's success before the Olympic break against the sabers was that bottom six they did the
things that they have done really well they played with energy they forechecked hard they took advantage
of their opportunities and with how good the sabers are this year that is where the game is going
to need to be one is against the bottom six lines so if the penguins third and fourth lines can
continue to show up and show out the way that they have so far this season I do think the advantage
goes to the penguins.
Yeah, and now that they do have Ben Kendall returning to the bottom of six,
again, if Lazot returns and it's looking highly likely,
that I do give the penguins the edge and that even with Sidney Crosby,
still out of the lineup.
Kindle has been a really nice fit between Mantha and Brazil.
Mantha and Brazil also have great chemistry together.
I like that third line quite a bit with Kindle there.
And the fourth line, we all know, arguably the best fourth line in hockey.
that line has been chugging along really nicely with Lazot centering it. Connor Dober has been
great. Noel Chari has seen a really big step up this year. So I like that line is back together.
We're still doing the Rickel thing at Center Pat, which, you know, okay, like, I'm glad that
Crosby is, you know, getting closer to returning just based on the way that he's skating throughout
this week. He was starting to skate last weekend by the sound of it. Maybe he'll go on the five game
road trip starting next week. That's going to be the,
kicker, by the way. Does he go on that five-game road trip? Maybe he could return a bit later on
during that trip. That would be huge. But I still am not that big of a fan of Rickel centering
that top line. I understand you don't want to separate the second line with, you know, Chinakov,
Novak and Malkin. I mean, Chinokov and Malkin, we all know, I've just been on another level since
the Penguins acquired Chinakov. But still, I prefer to see Raquel back on the wing, but they're going to
go back to him being at center for tonight.
Defensively, Gerard still with Latang,
Shea with Clifton.
I've made my piece on it.
I would flip those two,
but Dam Ews doesn't want to do that right now.
Watherspoon Carlson, of course.
And then Artie Shilovs will get the start tonight
as the Penguins continue the 1A, 1B,
the goalie rotation that they have had since the Skinner trade.
And honestly, since before the Skinner Trade,
when it was Jari, they were still rotating him and Shilovs.
And Shilovs was really good against Buffalo.
The last time he's fighting them,
he's been really good as of late.
I need him to really have another great performance night.
The Penguins want to walk away with two points.
Power play dipped a little bit on Tuesday against Boston.
Want to see that responded a little bit.
Apparently kill has been lights out throughout the year.
But, you know, I think the Penguins also, Boston just plays a style where it's hard
to generate against them.
I think they'll have an easier time generating offense against Sabres.
Because, yeah, like, are they good defensively?
Sure.
but they don't do a 1V4 like Boston does and they don't, you know, dare you to play dump and chase and all that good stuff.
So I do think it's going to be easier for the penguins to really get to their game,
forecheck below the dots, all that good stuff.
It's going to come down to, okay, how well is Uco Pekalukin in play?
Can you convert on your chances?
All that good stuff.
So they're still going to have a decent chance to win this one.
The Penguins have been playing a lot better at home as of late,
but still going to be a tough challenge when you're going up against the hottest team in the league over the last three.
months. Didn't know we had Dan Bilesma, former Sabres and Penguins coach on the show,
have the Penguins get to their game. That's a, that's a nice little throwback line there by
Hunter Hodes, whether he meant to do it or not. But here's the thing that I want to bring up on this is
I do think the Penguins in a way when you look at their forward lineup right now are a little bit
of victims of their own success because you look at this top six, Chinikov, Novak, Malkin,
You're not breaking that lineup.
They have been playing so well together and you don't want to mess that up.
Hayes Raquel Rust.
It's a tough line because Raquel really hasn't been as good at center as we had hoped he would in the short term.
Again, neither of us endorsed him being a long-term option at center,
but we thought it would be better than this because it had been in the past.
And then you look at the bottom six away from that.
Mantha, Kindle, Brazow, that line's been really good.
Duer Lazot Achari, I mean, we have fawned over that line all season long with how good they've been.
So you're kind of just between a rock and a hard place because you're not going to swap Raquel and Malkin and put Malkin back at center.
And you're not going to break up that first line.
I'm calling it first line, by the way.
That's how good they've been.
Yeah.
Sit out.
That's your first line right now.
So they're just kind of in a tough luck scenario where they kind of got to deal with that.
Because the other option, you're not bringing in Kevin Hayes because we have seen how ineffective he has been this season.
So you just kind of got to like the overarching theme of this episode in the last few weeks,
you just got to tread water until 87 gets back.
And then you figure out what you do from there.
As for the goaltenders, I mean, what else is there?
say. As much as we keep saying, yeah, Shilovs would be our playoff game one starter,
knock on wood, should they get there. But both him and Skinner have just been matching one
another's performances. And until one of them decides to falter or really step up and take the
reins, you just got to let him keep doing their thing. Yeah, I'm with you on that. The 1A1B
has worked throughout the season. There's no reason to go away from
that now you're going to need both of these guys down the stretch,
assuming obviously Skinner stays beyond the deadline,
but I think there's a fairly good shot that happens unless a team overpays.
And I will say, man, there are some crazy prices right now out there.
You're seeing Nick Waugh go for a first round pick, which is kind of crazy.
You saw Nick Dowell go for two picks and another piece coming back.
It was basically the equivalent of the Igor Chinikov trade that the Penguins made.
Some of the prices I'm seeing are kind of crazy.
So, hey, if someone out there, you know, wants to overpay for Skinner, as I said early this week, you got a deal you can't refuse.
Okay.
I can very much see the penguins taking that.
But otherwise, I think they're going to keep him through the deadline.
You are going to need both of those goalies down the stretch to get in.
Both of them have been playing really well as of late.
Not to annoy one of our listeners who I know hates when I say this, but I've been given the opportunity.
Oh, not.
Let's park that there.
because we do want to talk about the deadline and get to a break real quick.
We will have plenty more to talk about the Penguins deadline coming up here in just under 24 hours from when we're recording this.
So stick with us because we got a lot to talk about.
And a familiar name is starting to surface connected to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
We'll get into that when we come back right after this.
But we've got one more sponsor to get to.
and that is our friends at Factor.
Cold days, packed schedules, and big goals,
that pretty much sums up the winter months for all of us.
And when there's not a lot of time to cook,
eating well can feel like another thing
on your ever-growing to-do list.
That is where Factor comes in.
Factor makes healthy eating easy with fully prepared meals
designed by dieticians and crafted by chefs
so you can eat well without all the planning,
prepping, or cooking.
Hunter loves to make fun.
of me for being short. So, you know, one of the things I try to do is stay in shape because I'll
go from playing beer league hockey to beer league bowling and I will be the bowling ball if I don't
take care of myself and try to lose some weight. But one of the problems is I do this show. I've got a
full-time job. I've got a full-time job. I've got to take care of. So getting to the grocery
store and spending hours in the kitchen, just don't have the time for that. And that is where
factor has come up huge for me as I keep trying to stay in shape and keep myself from becoming
the aforementioned bowling ball. The factor meals are fresh. They're never frozen. The ingredients
are fantastic, lean proteins, veggies, whole foods, healthy fats, all the stuff I'm looking for.
There are also tons of variety with over 100 rotating meals each week. So I'm not eating the
same plain chicken, rice and broccoli every single day. A lot of variety there. Big fan.
and it's perfect for the busy schedule that I have.

We're back here closing out the Thursday edition of,
Locked on Penguins. I'm Patrick Damp, right alongside Hunter Hodes. We're getting ever closer
to the NHL trade deadline. We're all curious. What does Kyle Dubus have up his sleeve?
Because this season has been a surprise, as we all know. The penguins are battling for the
playoffs. They were supposed to be in the McKenna sweepstakes. They very much are not. They've got
some prospects who are ahead of schedule. They've got more draft picks than they know what to do with.
plenty of cap space.
So for the penguins,
it's like elementary school, man.
When you got that Goosebump's book
that was Choose Your Own Adventure,
you could just go wherever you want
on this deadline if you're Kyle Dubus.
But this just in
from our friend Josh Yohe,
the Penguins,
might be talking to Vancouver
about their old friend,
Teddy Blugher.
And I'll say this much.
If it's a cheap deal,
and you're not giving much up,
I will live with it because when it comes to the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs
and just the grind of the stretch to the Stanley Cup playoffs,
as we're seeing right now,
as we just talked about in our previous segment,
it can never hurt to have some center depth,
and they need that right now.
I mean, as a face-off specialist, as another center,
sure, fine, you know, he's whatever to me.
like I don't think he's really going to move the needle that much more in the bottom six.
How I think for the players in the bottom six right now, I don't think he's better than any of those six that we have talked about.
Connor Dewer, Noel Achari, Blake Lazot, I'm all taking over Teddy Blugher, and I'm especially taking Justin Brazo, Anthony Mantha and Ben Kendall.
So again, he's way more on the safe side.
He's probably not going to cost very much.
but, you know, if you want to maybe nab him as a, again, face off specialist, that's fine, too,
I guess.
I'm not, you know, over the moon about it again, totally fine player, but, you know, I'm not going to,
you know, go nuts if they acquire him or anything like that.
Someone else that also comes to mind for me, you know, Dawson Mercer from New Jersey,
24 years old, team control, he's at 4 million, but he's going to be an RFA.
his contract up right here for the show notes today. He's under contract next season at $4 million.
and he's an RFA for the 27, 28 season. Fits the type of mold that Kyle Dubus wants to go after.
Players in their early to mid-20s that may need a change of scenery. He's put up good numbers in
the NHL already this season, 14 goals and 32 points on a not-so-good Jersey team. His career
high in goals is 27 back in the 22, 23 season. His career high in points is 56. You can play him
all over your lineup.
Now, if he comes, you know, kind of like the Chinokov deal, like that type of template,
that makes sense to me.
And that's kind of what Kyle Dubas is going after.
By the way, he said as such on the GM show last night that the Chinokov deal,
that's kind of what he's eyeing.
I think Dawson Mercer fits that to a T.
I know a couple people have asked me on Twitter, DMs, a couple other places.
What do you think of Shane Wright?
For me, I think Seattle only dangles him if they're getting a
big time score back.
Like that's the way I see it when it comes to Shane Wright.
I think he's a fine enough player.
He fits the mold that Kyle Dubus would go after.
But if you had me pick between the two that I just mentioned,
I'd definitely go for Dawson Mercer.
I just think he's a better overall player.
On the back end, if the price is right,
and if you want to try to upgrade that number six spot,
again, no disrespect to Connor Clifton or Ilius Wolof.
But if you want to look at Justin Falk from the St. Louis Blues,
I could see that.
someone that can play third pairing minutes behind Carlson, behind Lettang, you just have to see
what the price is. Because again, right now, Pat, these prices are crazy.
Like, we saw, it's not even 48 hours ago. The NHL Insiders are like, oh, it's a buyer's
market this year. No, it's not. I mean, it's more of a seller's market this year compared
to last year, in my opinion. Some of these. I think we try too hard to fit trade deadlines
in free agency days into boxes that, you know,
don't exist. I think we're looking a little too hard at trades and overall trades to say like,
oh, this is a buyer's market. This is a seller's market. This is the rare time where I think we're
safe to say that trades operate in a vacuum because Colorado goes out and pays all that for Roy from
Toronto, right? They need that. They are a team that is gunning for a Stanley Cup. Their expectation
is win the Stanley Cup, and that is it.
There's no, if we get in and go on a run, that's cool.
They're gunning to win the Stanley Cup.
Everything else is a failure, and that includes,
forget the future, whatever it costs,
we're throwing it out the door.
And then you have teams like the Penguins who they're playing with house money.
So like if they want to go get a young guy and it costs a little bit and it fits into their future,
that fits better.
So I do find it funny when people are like, oh, this market's crazy.
It's like, let's maybe look at what all these teams are trying to accomplish
before we talk about the whole market.
Because if say I'm the penguins and I want to go to a team and say,
hey, let's talk about the one I just talked about at the start.
They go to Vancouver and they're like, hey, what do you want for Teddy Bluger?
And they say, well, you know, Roy got us got Toronto all this stuff.
And you go, dude, we're not Toronto.
and we're not Colorado.
You're not Toronto.
We're not Colorado.
You're entering into a rebuild.
We're in the middle of one.
Let's help each other out from there.
So I do find that funny.
The other thing that I really enjoyed,
just to move off of that real quick,
before we end the show,
was I know that Kyle Dubus is great
at doing wordplay, essentially.
He's not classic GM speak,
where he talks out of both sides of his mouth.
But he is a classic guy who will say a lot.
And then when you read the words, you go, he didn't say anything.
He's got media trained.
Yes.
You kind of have to be when you come from a place like Toronto.
He plays his cards very close to the vest.
You know, it's funny.
He could do something totally out of left field tomorrow and it wouldn't surprise anyone.
Remember last year before the deadline, acquired Tommy Novak out of nowhere.
Nobody had that on the Penguins radar.
He wasn't even really out there on anyone's trade bait board.
Penguins still got him in the money.
Michael Buntoning trade. So just look for something like that. Kyle Dubus plays his cards very close to
the vest. Only a select few people really know what's going on. Let's see all the next 24 hours go.
So we'll see. I'm excited to see what he has up his sleep here in the next, you know, well, it's not even really 24 hours.
It's about 23-ish hours now, Pat, since we're finishing this right around 4 p.m. And don't worry,
people. We'll have a full episode out on Friday after the deadline expires on every,
everything the penguins do or don't do because they don't really have to make a move if they
don't want to.
And we'll be recapping this game against the Sabres.
I'm excited though.
We'll see what happens here.
And I will end it on this quote to talk about what the penguins might do with the deadline.
And I think it fills into talking about both the goalies unless they get a king's ransom for one
of them.
And that's, well, I think we feel good about where we're at in goal in the present and in the future.
So Kyle Dubus knows that there is one place this team has a lot of depth organizationally,
and that's in net.
So don't be surprised if you don't see any moves when it comes to goaltending because they have a lot of good options.
They have a bright future.
And they're present so far has been pretty damn good.
And I'll say this for Anthony Mantha, too.
As of right now, I don't think he's getting moved.
I just really don't see it.
I know some people may get upset about that when you see the market that's going on right now.
And I totally understand that.
But I just don't see him getting moved right now.
That's my take on it.
I could be dead wrong.
I've been wrong about quite a few things this year already.
But I do not think he is getting moved at this time.
You and me both.
But that is going to do it for the Thursday edition of Locked on Penguins.
Hunter and I, as he said, will be back with a new episode on Friday,
recapping tonight's game against.
the Sabres and giving you a full recap and breakdown of everything happening at the trade deadline.
So let's say if the penguins go off and make a few moves, we're probably not going to do Fan Take Friday.
If we've got some time and the Penguins don't make a ton of moves, keep an eye on our YouTube channel and we'll put the call out for Fan Take Friday.
That is to be determined.
But for now, for Hunter Hodes, I am Patrick Damp.
Thank you as always for tuning in.
and we will talk to you on Friday.
