Pat, we went into Friday already recording our show late Thursday evening of Gennie Malkins'

40th birthday. Not really expecting any news. There's just going to be people reacting to some of Gino's best goals like we did here on the pod. But then Kyle Dubas said, yeah, I'm going to give you all some news. Ifgeny Malkin is especially going to have a small little birthday present because he played a lot with Tommy Novak last season. And Novak was signed to a three-year. extension by the Penguins.

It was announced at 10 a.m. on Friday morning. The average annual value on the contract will be 4.65 million. I got to say, Pat, in terms of term and money, I have no problem with it. I was just surprised if they actually did it this early. They didn't wait until the season, didn't wait until the trade deadline. Hell, didn't wait until after the season just because he was expected to be a UFA. I kind of had him still as a potential trade candidate, just. because they have a lot of forwards right now,

both veterans and some younger players who were trying to push for roster spots, and I felt that he was going to be one of the options that they would at least look to potentially move because teams are always in need of centers. I just didn't think he was going to come this soon, so I was just a bit surprised when I saw it. But again, term-wise, I don't have a problem with it.

Money-wise, this is kind of the going right now for a middle-six-to-top-nine center who can play up and down your lineup, can play center, can play wing. We'll get into more of where he fits going forward a bit later on in the show. We'll also talk about the state of the Metropolitan Division. But Pat, those are some of my main thoughts. I also think Tommy Novak is a player that gets a little bit too much flat from some select people in the fan base.

I think there's just people that are too hard on him, you know, this past season, put up totally fine number, 16 goals, 42 points, and 82 games, basically half a point per game. And I will gladly take that for someone who was in that middle six to top nine for the Penguins throughout this season. I know in the second half he played a lot more in the top six on the second line. But still, that type of production, I will take for that cap hit. And, you know, again, money wise, term wise, I'm good with it. I will continue to say that us included, when I say everybody, we do have to shift our mentality to the rising salary cap world.

because I know that when I first saw it within the first couple of minutes, I kind of balked at the AAV. I went $4.65 million for Tommy Novak. That's steep. And then the other part of my brain clicked in and went, the salary cap's going way, way up. So the going rate for guys like Tommy Novak is increasing along with it. So with that in mind,

I'm right there with you in the sense that I got no problem with a three-year extension at this number for, a 29-year-old Tommy Novak. He played fairly well on that second line with Hvgeny Malkin and Igor Chinikov. And those are two players right now that you, I don't want to say you need to keep happy because they're perfectly happy here. We know that we talked about it on our Friday episode. There's nowhere else of Gennie Malkin wants to be except for Pittsburgh.

So he's just happy to still have a Penguins jersey and still be in the NHL. Igor Chinikov for now is pretty damn happy in Pittsburgh because it's been a career. renaissance for him ever since he joined the team. But there are two players that you do walk a bit of a tightrope with. You need to make sure you have a center for them. And last year in the second half of the season, Tommy Novak very much was the center for both of them. And it worked out pretty well. So keeping him around for the medium term is a good idea. However, the part that I will, I will both agree and push back on you with is the same thing I said in our season review about Tommy Novak.

I agree in the sense that for some reason, Tommy Novak has unrealistic expectations placed upon him by the fan base. He's not an elite center. He's a very good to good center. He's not going to be a guy who's ever on your top line unless there are a bunch of injuries. He is a guy who on a content. is probably going to be in your bottom six. This is not a contending team, so he is in your top six.

But all of that I come back to is he is a player that since he has become a penguin, not counting the two games he played before he got hurt after they got him. Last year, he just leaves you wanting a little bit more. I'm not expecting him to become an elite center. I'm not expecting him to become a big time point producer, but I just need slightly more consistency in production out of him, where I don't want to see him go a week and a half without scoring a goal or putting up some points. I don't want to, I don't expect him to light up the score sheet.

I don't expect him to be in the top four-ish, five-ish players who put up all the points on the penguins. I leave that to Crosby, Malkin, Carlson, Shinnikov, those guys. But considering the role he is taking on with the penguins, and maybe this happens this year, because he had a solid year this year. He has consistently put up the similar numbers everywhere he's been, but just a tad more consistency out of him. But overall, don't hate the deal, don't hate the term, don't hate the number. Yeah, I understand. your last point, but he also kind of falls in line with a lot of these other players around the league, Pat, where they're going to go through times where they're a bit inconsistent and they don't

score for a week or 10 days or two weeks. That's just the nature of life for a lot of these types of players in the NHL. The ones that avoided are to me, like those top high-end players who, obviously they're more consistent, but they know how to go most of the time, you know, a week to 10 days to 14 days, you know, while just continuing to score. These other players, this is kind of what you sign up for, where there's going to be times where their game is lacking a little bit or they're not posting consistent numbers, but you live with it because there's going to be other times where they can't stop scoring and they're writing, the writing, excuse me, a little bit of a shooting vendor.

And you've seen that a little bit with Tommy Novak so far. I mean, I wrote about it for the hockey news at the beginning of last season where I wanted to see more. I did the next few weeks. he started going on fire, came back down to Earth a little bit, got on fire a little bit, especially in the second half this season, comes back down to Earth. That's just kind of going to be the life cycle for a player like this. Now, if you want something like, say, 20 goals for him this upcoming season, I think that's

totally fine. He came really close this past season with 16 goals, still about a half a point per game. But if you want 20, 22 goals for someone that's hopefully going to be in your top six all season, at least that's what it's looking like right now, more on that in a second. I think that is a fair expectation to have. now. And that's pretty much. He also may not go into the corners and, you know, win as many loose puck battles as some other players will on this team, Pat. But considering who he is as a playmaker, his vision, his hockey IQ, they all fit really well on this team,

especially on the second line with a player like of Gennie Malkin, who leads really well off Tommy Novak. So again, I know he has some detractors in the fan base. You know, I will continue to still be a Tommy know back truther, even though to your point, if you want 20 plus goals, you want a little bit more consistency, that's fine. But just the way that he plays, just kind of light for that type of player in the NHL where there's just always going to be at least some inconsistency every season. Well, and that's, that's the point I'm making to what you said about the numbers is I want him to reach that 20 goal mark. I want him to hit 50, 55 points. And again, it's not to expect to. him to become some elite level producer.

But when you put it in the context of who he's expected to be on a line with, I need a little more production. If you're with Evgeny Malkin, I know he's 40. I know he's not the Afghani Malkin of even five years ago. But he's also on a line with Igor Chanikov, a guy with a lethal shot and a nose for the net. I just need him to increase a little bit. That's all I'm asking.

I'm not asking him to score 30 and put up 70. It's 25 or 20 to 22, maybe even 25 is a high ceiling and 50, 55 points on a whole. Because you know on that line, and we're going to get into the fit here in the next segment. When you have that line of Malkin, Novak, Chinikov, Malkin and Chinikov are going to eat. But to keep this in the right metaphor, Novak needs to be the guy who grocery shops. You set them up. You get all the ingredients. You retrieve the pucks, you make the passes, you make the plays, you play defense, and you let those two run wild.

So that's all I mean with that. If he can hit that 20 goal mark, if we're sitting here next summer when this extension kicks in and he's still a penguin and he hit the 20 goal mark, I will be more than satisfied. Yeah, and I think that's fair. Like you always want every player on the team to improve from year after year. So he does hit 20 goals, 50-ish points somewhere around there. I think that will also lead to maybe some of his detractors kind of coming over slightly a little bit to the other side. I do think this deal should show Pat that the front office and the coaching staff, they're pretty high on him, considering that they signed him to this extension right now,

and they didn't want to wait until during the season or even during the trade deadline, because I think, Pat, if the penguins were, say, out of the race by the deadline, for example, this upcoming season, I would like to think that Tommy Novak would have generated some interest around the late. teams are always looking for centers around the trade that downline, excuse me. Now, wouldn't have been like the biggest fish available, but I do think teams would have been coming to call the Penguins about Tommy Novak. But that's going to do it for our first segment. Coming up in the second segment, where does he fit in the lineup going forward?

All right, we're back here on the Monday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast.

I'm one of your host, Hunters, Hodes, joined by my co-host, Patrick Damp. And Pat, I want to go back to something you said about where Novak slots in, because I agree with you on a true cup contender, I think he is a third line center. He's on the third line. He has two really solid wingers around him,

but the Penguins, they're not a true cup contender, as of right now. So he has to play a little bit higher up in the lineup. That's just where their center depth is right now. If you acquired someone, say, like, I'm just starting out there because we talked about it. If you acquired someone like Elias Pedersen, I think he would probably be your second-line center, and you can probably afford to move down Tommy Novak to your third line and be your third-line center. That has not happened.

So Novak, I still think he's going to start the season as second-line center. He'll play with Afghani Malkin and Igor Chinikov. That was one of the Penguins' best lines throughout last season, especially in the second half of the season from January onward. They all just fit so seamlessly on the same line. Chinikov, he's that Pierce sniper who will finish off plays. Malkin, we all know how much he's a puck count, he's a bully, loves doing his thing on that line, and then Novak, he's more of the playmaker.

He has good vision. He'll set up both of those players on the line. And both Malkin and Chinokov, especially Malkin, you know, they're just so comfortable with Novak. So that's what I see happening entering the season. and then for special teams, Pat, I still assume Novak is going to get at least some power play two time for this upcoming season. It just makes sense to have him on there considering his vision and his playmaking ability.

And he can still finish at least decently well. I still think his shot is an underrated aspect of his game. So those are kind of my expectations for him going into next season and for the rest of this deal. I think you're going to see them all over, the Penguins, special teams units. I think you will see him get some power. power play two time. He will be a factor on the penalty kill because he is a very good, maybe not very good, but he is a reliable two way in that way that you can trust him on the penalty kill. And you're right. The line will remain the same barring injuries or

ascendancy for many of the younger or new players. But I mean, we we talked about it on this show after he was acquired. If Getty Malkin straight up said he wanted to play with Tommy Nob. Yes. And he said he liked the way Novak played. He liked the way their games mesh. And what do you know, Gino was right. He was dead on because the two of them almost had instant chemistry last year. And like you said, in that second half of the season, there is a real argument to be made. And it's probably the correct argument that Novak, Malkin, Chinikov was the penguin's best line. They all just fit together right away. Malkin and Chinov have a lot of chemistry. Novak and Malkin have a lot of chemistry. The line just works. And you'll have Novak there to distribute the puck to one or both of them.

You'll have Gino, like you said, to do some of the dirty work. And if you're Igor Chinikov, just find that soft spot, find that place to sit where you can fire pucks because that shot remains absolutely unbelievable. So I think that's where he fits. Now, I'll push back on one thing about where you think Tommy Novak fits. Don't think he's going to play a lot on the penalty kill pad. He played 34 seconds on that unit last season. So, but mixing him up with someone else.

That's okay. But I will, but I will say this. It's in the same vein as what we have said about Chinikov and the power play. You don't want to overextend Tommy Novak. You don't want to, you don't want him to be playing 30 plus minutes a night because that's just not who he is. But much like Chinikov in the power play, there is a, there is room to put Tommy Novak on the PK. He can win face offs. He's defensively accountable.

Those are just two. And the other thing is he works his ass off. And those are the three things you pretty much need to be a forward on a penalty kill. You're defensively accountable. You can win face offs and you work hard. I say it all the time about penalty killing. At the end of the day, the best attribute you can have as a penalty killer is hard work because that's really all it is. If you know where to be and you work hard and you're willing to block some shots,

you will be at least serviceable penalty killer. So I think that is all there for Tommy Novak. Now, this is the part of the discussion that I was having with some people on social media. just because he signs a three-year extension doesn't mean he's going to be here for all three years because we spent all this time hyping him up in talking about how he can slot up and down your lineup. He's got value. He also is a center that is making less than $5 million. If the penguins swing a big trade and get a good young center in the system,

wouldn't be shocked to see him going the other way in that deal or on the other side of it. He again, he is a sent a middle six top nine center making less than five million. Even as the cap continues to rise, that contract is going to get a lot more valuable. And if there's a team that needs a third line center, a guy who can be your second line center in a pinch, if you've got that deal sitting there, you can extract some value out of teams. Yeah, I don't think it's going to be super soon. I don't think it's going to be this year's trade deadline. Maybe not even next year's, but potentially after that, for example,

with a year two left on his contract, I could definitely see him getting moved in a deal where a team really needs an upgrade at center, whether it's the second line or more preferably a third line, because I do think it would be mostly contenders going after a player like Novak. Can I see him more again as a third line center on a cup contender? going back to the penalty kill discussion for just a second. You know, Pat, we'll see if Dan Muse wants to, you know, add that to his repertoire. Because I understand what you're saying.

He just has barely played on the PK at all during his square. The most he has played on the PK came during the 2324 season with nationally played a buck 33 on there. So maybe he changed, maybe he does it a little bit more this year. Maybe Dam Euse says, hey, we like what you do at five on five. You like what you do on the power play too. I want to see how you do on this unit. But right now doesn't have a lot of experiences. We just have to see if that changes.

That's all. It's genuinely baffling to me that both here and Nashville have not used him on a PK. And I know that both teams have had better options. I get it and you should use those better options. But much like we have been saying with Chinikov, he's sitting right there, man. Like we don't have to overthink this. But again, we don't have to overthink it, but you also don't want to overextend. them as I said. It's just, it's an option that's there. And while not as obvious as Chinikov and the

power play, it still should be an option. Right. I'm with you. And again, for the power play with Chinokov, just give me. Needs to happen. Yeah. Eat that up. Give me PP1 minutes for your Chinoff this year. It makes the most eyes, especially with his deadly release. And hey, maybe you get your wish. And we get to see Tommy Nobeck a lot more on the PK this show. I'll have to see what Dam Euse and the rest of the coaching staff thinks about that. And Pat, this last segment was inspired by a really cool tweet from Josh Yoie, where he gave his early thoughts on the Metro. And I completely agree with him because I've said it a little bit on a recent pod earlier this whole season, where Carolina number one, Washington number two, three to eight, everyone else. And I think that's totally fair. I could see so many different combinations outside of teams three through eight in the Metro that I feel like this division actually might be the hardest to predict once you get outside the top two because I definitely think Carolina is winning the Metro.

I would be stunned if that did not happen. I wouldn't be stunned if Washington didn't get second, but I'd be a little bit surprised because I do think on paper they are the second best team in the division, especially when you, A, look at their forward group. It is way better this year compared to last year. Their defensive pairings are better. And they have one of the top goaltenders in the league. That is at least a good playoff team.

I don't think they're a pure cup contender, but I think they are definitely good enough to get home ice or at least a round in the playoffs. All side of that, though, you know, I kind of have the penguins fighting for that third or four spot in the metro. I think the Rangers have improved this off season, especially defensively, though I don't think their ceiling is probably just a wildcar team that gets bounced by the Panthers in the first round. The Islanders are still just kind of there. They have a lot of bad contracts.

Matthew Schaefer is going to keep them interesting as well as Ilya Syrokin. Columbus, they still have some good young talent there, but is Marchenko going to get moved? I'm not fully sure. Philadelphia, do they take a step back? That's also going to be interesting to me. Pat, we can keep going on. on about this. New Jersey, for example, could they take a step forward this year after how ravaged they were by injuries and their coaching wasn't really good last year either?

There's just so many different combinations that I could see from teams three through eight where I'm really only confident about two of these teams making the playoffs. Otherwise, at least for one more Metro team making the playoffs, I have no idea who it's going to be right now. It's going to be fun making these predictions as we get closer to the season, though. I mean, you hit the nail on the head there, and I don't think you meant to. I think the metro this year, if things go the way we expect them, you're only sending three metro teams to the playoffs. They might. Because the Atlantic Division is just hell in a cell. That's that is what the Atlantic is. And every team in the Atlantic is

either somewhere between good or great and even getting better. So I really think the Atlantic division is going to send five teams. And that's how it was this year. They sent five and the Metro only sent three. And if you are the Metro, you have to get into the third spot to make it into the Stanley Cup playoffs to be the last team. And I'm with everybody else in the sense that one and two is Carolina and Washington. Carolina defending champs, they're getting just about everybody back. They've still got cap space so they can make a big swing again and get better So that just seems unfair. Washington, they are a couple years ahead of what the penguins are trying to do.

Yeah. They were pretty much, I know that everyone was asking if OVie was going to come back or not. Honestly, if I look at the way the capitals operated the last couple years, they didn't care. Like they cared in the sense that he's their guy. He's the best player in the history of their franchise. And they would love to have them as long as they can. But you look at the way they put that roster.

together. That wasn't putting a roster together and thinking, oh, man, how are we going to fit Ovi into this? If Ovi comes back, we'll find a place for him. But if he doesn't, we're fine, which is crazy. So they're going to be, those are the top two teams. The Flyers still, they need that guy. They need that, they need that number one center. But they're still a pretty damn good team. And they are a discipline and stingy team as we saw in the playoffs. And that is good enough to win you around and stay competitive, and they improved their goaltending. So that's another team that I think is going to be right there again. Sneakily under the radar, Rangers having a solid off season.

I think they're going to be better than they were last year. I don't know if their playoff ready yet. Yeah. Same thing with Columbus. You got to see what happens with all of their big pieces if they want to stay, if they want to move the devils. While they haven't done a ton, they made the changes they needed to make. and should they stay healthy, they'll be competitive.

The Islanders, some of their young players are starting to take over aside from just Matthew Schaefer. Once those bad contracts are off the books, they're going to be right back in the mix. So this is going to be a tough year for the Penguins if they want to try to recapture last year's magic, which I'm a little skeptical of because as much as I like everything that the Penguins are doing, I don't want to say last year was a fluke per se, but it was more of a everything that needed to line up for them lined up. So if you're expecting the penguins to get back to consistently making the playoffs, you might be a little disappointed.

Yeah, last year was everything that had to happen literally happened. And then other players also outperformed expectations tenfold. And then also the goaltending held up. and we can throw the special teams in there, too. They had two of the best special teams units in all the NHL last season. So, you know, we'll have to see if somehow all that happens, again, to create that perfect storm because that's what it was last season for the Penguins. Though you'll at least be competing for one of those metro spats, you know,

time will tell on the wild card just because of how stacked the Atlantic is this season. Now, I think a team like the Bruins potentially comes out for a team like the Panthers. Panthers in there. You can even argue the senators because they traded Brady Cuch. I know they got, they did the Eklon trade, but I still think on paper right now, the senators are a bit worse than where they were on season, but I still think that division is probably going to send 15, especially again with the Florida Panthers coming back to next season.

The other, the other thing I think we got to kind of keep in mind here is that the balance of power in the NHL is very much shifting back to the Eastern Conference. because I look at the West and there are three genuinely bad teams in Calgary, Chicago, Vancouver. Those teams are bad. Seattle's mid, Winnipeg's mid, San Jose is on their way up, Nashville. They've made some improvements. I'm curiously what they do. St. Louis, L.A., kind of mid.

And then everybody else above them, pretty good. But then you look at the East right now. I don't see a genuinely bad team right now. the Rangers got better Toronto got better Florida just had injuries up and down the lineup and were burnt out

they're going to be right back the devils should at least be competitive the islanders should at least be a competitive team maybe Columbus falls off Detroit they're always a coin flip but who knows with Detroit they still have working on their roster

so but they're not I know they fell off hard in the second half of the season has been has been their trend the last couple years, but who knows? Like, you look at the East right now, and I'm struggling to see a bad team. So it's a tough year to be an Eastern Conference team. Yeah, it's definitely a better conference than the West.

I think there's no question about that. And I do expect that to continue this season. But there's always teams that will surprise you, Pat. And teams that are expected to be good are bad the year after. So we'll just have to see what happens when the season starts. I'm excited for it. It's going to make for another very competitive season. And again, you mentioned some of those other teams in Metro.

We all know the Penguins. They're going to be at least competitive this year as well. Now, town will tell if they can get back to the playoffs for a second straight year, but I don't think this team is going to roll over or anything like that.
