Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins - What should the Penguins offseason priorities be?

Episode Date: April 19, 2023

It's Day Two of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and the Pittsburgh Penguins are still sadly not in it. Sad! Hunter starts the show by going over a few Penguins-centric items from Elliotte Friedman's 32 Thoug...hts on Monday. He discusses how the Penguins are continuing to discuss building out their analytics department and who they could get from other teams that Elliotte mentions. He also looks at a funny but sad ROn Hextall story that Elliotte wrote about and why the Penguins' front office will need to be more in sync for next season and years to come. What about those JT Miller talks? Hunter provides an update on those courtesy of Friedman and why Hextall actually got it right when it comes to not giving up what Vancouver wanted. Hunter then gives his ideal contract for Jason Zucker before analyzing what the top priorities for this team should be over the next several months. Do they need to totally restart at goalie? Does Kris Letang need a new partner for next season? Hunter also analyzes what the Penguins should do with Mikael Granlund before discussing the bottom six as a whole and why it needs to be revamped. What kinds of players should new management target for those roles? All of that, plus how awesome Monday night was is on this episode of Locked On Penguins.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!GametimeDownload the Gametime app, create an account, and use code LOCKEDONNHL for $20 off your first purchase.eBay MotorsFor parts that fit, head to eBay Motors and look for the green check. Starting point is 00:00:00 Happy Tuesday, April the 18th, second night of the Stanley Cup playoffs for you all. Tonight, the Rangers take on the devils. We got the Maple Leafs and the Lightning. The Leafs trying to end that curse in a couple of late games. As well, but to start off today's show, we're going to get into Elliot Freeman's 32 thoughts and a lot of the Penguin stuff that he discussed. I'll give you all my thoughts on it as there's a little scoop in there about Jason Zucker and a very funny but also kind of sad story about Ron Hicks on how he ran
Starting point is 00:00:30 the front office. That's coming up right after this drop. You're Locked on Penguins. Your daily podcast on the Pittsburgh Penguins. Part of the Locked on Podcast Network. Starting point is 00:01:22 to get started. So just before the first games of the Stanley Cup playoffs on Monday happened, L.A. Freeman released his 32 thoughts blog, discussing Brad Tre Living and then the Penguins front office. Real quick note on Brad Trilliving. The Penguins might interview him for the general manager role. I'm not big on retreads, you know, especially with Fenway sports groups. You know, they want someone who's a forward thinker, you know, proactive and all that.
Starting point is 00:01:52 I don't think that's Bradshaw living out. I think he did a decent job in Calgary. I do. I think he made the best of a really tough situation last summer when Johnny Godro left. He traded Matthew Gitchuk, but he got Jonathan Hubertow back, McKenzie Weeger. You know, he signed Asim Khadre. He did decent there. It's just, I don't think him and Daryl Sutter were on the same page.
Starting point is 00:02:13 page. I think he'll need to go to a team where he's on the same page. Maybe that's the Penguins, but I would rather go for someone who's a little more young and up and coming and who leans more into the analytics a little bit. I don't think Trulivie would be a bad hire. I just really wouldn't be blown away by it. You know, just want to put that out there because he's a free agent right now. I would just purely speculation here. I probably would think the Penguins will interview him. I don't think he's going to get the gig, though. So outside of that, Elliot discussed is a whole bunch. on the Penguins.
Starting point is 00:02:45 He said in Pittsburgh, many of us wondered what it meant that Mike Sullivan is part of the transition team with a couple of days to look into it. I think it's more along the lines of there's not much experience
Starting point is 00:02:53 among the remaining group as opposed to Sullivan gaining a Bill Belichick-like power. Basically what he's saying is there's just not much management experience with Alex Shaw, Eric Heasley, you know, and all these other guys
Starting point is 00:03:05 and they want Mike Sullivan to, you know, be there to assist in, you know, the exit interviews and all that stuff. you know, Sullivan's not going to be handpicking his boss here. I mean, that's a little ridiculous. But, you know, he's going to assist, you know, with like the day-to-day stuff and, you know, exit interviews, you know,
Starting point is 00:03:23 Richard, maybe Richard. If he's been placed by then, you know, that kind of stuff. Elliot also says, again, expect the penguins to cast a wide net. He talks about Fenway. They didn't really commit to any front office structure. He also said, it's just basically discovering who to me, as much as about discovering who to hire. Here's the Ron Hextall story that I alluded to in my intro.
Starting point is 00:03:50 No, this is that. Elliot writes, Ron Hextall likes to keep a circle really tight. He despise hearing players' names and trade rumors, but there's a demand that the new front office is more collaborative. Here's a story. During at least one trade deadline meeting this year, per Freeman, everyone in the Penguins front office in the room had to put their phones in the middle of the table so nothing could leak.
Starting point is 00:04:12 No, I am not joking. Elliot Friedman actually wrote that and it's true. What are we doing here? Like that's literally like my mom back when I was in middle school being like, okay, Hunter, give me your phone for 24 hours. You're grounded. Oh, but when I give you it back, you can't tell anyone why you didn't have your phone. Something like that, right?
Starting point is 00:04:38 It's just like, is he really grounding his coworkers here? you know, what's to stop any of those people in the front office being like, oh, hey, Rob Rossi, hey, whoever, Paineer Reporter or Elliot Freeman, hey, get a load of this crap. Like, it's just really, really weird. But hey, guess he doesn't want anyone getting, you know, a head start on Dermitri Kulikov, doesn't want anyone getting ahead of Mikhail Granlin, right? That's just hilarious to me. I can't.
Starting point is 00:05:09 I figured we could start off the show on a little bit of a fun. me note, but also a sad note at the same time. It's just like, Ron, you know, leaks happen. That's just how the world is now in 2023. That's sad, man. You don't need to take your coworkers' phones. Like, there's just really no reason for that. You know, again, that's another reason why I'm glad that he's gone and, you know, having the front office to be more collaborative. I think that's, I don't think that's a true shot, but I think that means that, you know, Hextall was kind of in his office a lot of times not really you know engaging with a lot of people in their front office I think the penguins want their front office to be like one cohesive unit and not just having
Starting point is 00:05:51 separated and stuff like that as before last week's firings the penguins are committed to making more of a commitment to analytics so they look and talk about the forefront in places like buffalo Carolina Colorado Columbus New Jersey Seattle and Toronto again Buffalo Jason Carmanos San Ventura Carolina Eric Tolskine a couple of their other guys you know Tom Delo I believe he's in New Jersey. You know, Toronto, obviously, with Eric Tol. I don't know, Eric Tolte. Kyle Dubis.
Starting point is 00:06:19 A bunch of the people that are these people in these teams were in Rob Rossi's original article. So not surprising that they're going to be looking at people from those teams. Elliot also says he thinks he'll be looking to talk to some up-and-coming former hockey playing executive. Like Sean Horkov, just as an example. some others with the bit more experience. That will be interesting.
Starting point is 00:06:47 So I'm interested to see, you know, possible that the Penguins asked about Stan's bonus data then brings up working for Mike Sullivan. So obviously someone is talking about it, but I truly don't think he's going to be that hot of a candidate. You know, Elliot went from expecting on the 32 thoughts podcast. Now he said it's possible. Honestly, if you're asking me,
Starting point is 00:07:10 I don't think he's going to get an interview. If he does, it's a courtesy one. I don't even think he should get that. But I don't think he's going to get this gig, and nor should he, for multiple reasons. Elliot also says he expects the penguins to look outside of hockey, as Rob Rossi said, brought up Jeff Greenberg. And then here's the big thing with J.T. Miller.
Starting point is 00:07:31 He says, whatever happened with Pittsburgh in Vancouver, J.T. Miller is like the White Whale of Inchell Report. We know it was a big, complicated move. By the basis of all, the Cucks made a huge ask. I believe that they wanted two first-round picks and a good prospect, and at the end of the day, I don't think the Penguins wanted to go there. Honestly, my thoughts, I'm fine with that. You know, two-first, the prospect was probably Owen Pickering.
Starting point is 00:07:53 If you look at the Penguin system, there's not much there. I mean, Joel Blumquist, I guess, maybe. Other than that, it's probably Owen Pickering that they were asking for. Two first-round picks for a guy where it's a massive extension's about to kick in. And then there's rumors that they wanted Jason Zucker. as part of that deal. Yeah, I am okay that the Penguins did not do that trade. That would have been a, it wouldn't have been as big of a disaster, I think, as the Grandin one, but I do think it would have been pretty bad. You know, two first plus Owen Pickering, plus Jason Zucker for J.T. Miller
Starting point is 00:08:28 would have been really dumb. I haven't really given a lot, hext all a lot of credit even after he got canned. And, you know, he did do a pretty poor job, but I will say he did a good job, not doing that. And then finally, some big meat here, the last one. Elliot says, I believe the penguins do want to resign Jason Zucker. I just don't know if it's going to be possible. He played very well and will be wanted. My thoughts on this, I would bring back Zucker, preferably on a two or three-year term. I'm not really interested in a five- or six-year term.
Starting point is 00:08:59 You know, you can maybe talk me into it and say, oh, the team's going to stink by the end of that. And sure, you know, you're right. It's probably not that big of a deal. But I also just don't want his production going down. the crapper next year, even though he just had a great year here. That's my main concern because he was awesome this season. But can he repeat that if you give him a five or six year term? You're also going to be giving him a lot of dollars.
Starting point is 00:09:24 It will be five times five, five times five point five, five five times six. You know, I just don't know if the penguins can commit to that, whoever this new management group is going to be. You know, maybe it's a two times five point five, two times six, three times six, something like that. I'd be more down for that, especially in the short term, but I just don't know if it makes the most sense to sign him to a long-term deal like they did with Brian Russ, like they did with Ricard Raquel. Don't get wrong. Jason was awesome.
Starting point is 00:09:52 But I do think of the free agents this summer, Zucker, for as good as he was, this may be a hot take. But with the players available in free agency and via trade, I think he could be one of the easier players to, replace. Again, it's going to sound weird because he just had his best season of his career. I don't know where the Penguins would be without him this past season, but I do think the Penguins will have options either via agency or via trade to replace it. That's how I see it, though. Again, I want him back as much as anyone, but it's going to be really, really tough, I think.
Starting point is 00:10:33 So that wraps up this first thing, getting into Elliot Freeman's 32 thoughts. And my thoughts on all that. Again, the Ron Hexel story is hilarious. I can't even believe that's true. But coming up in the second segment, we're going to get to my personal off-season priorities, what the Penguins really need to focus on this off-season outside of getting a top-for-defendman. And I do think there are a few other needs as well.
Starting point is 00:10:55 But before we get into that, we do have to discuss Fandle, which is the official sports betting partner of Lockdown. Grand slams, no hitters, and double plays are back, and there's no better place to get in on the M&B action than Fandul. America's number one sports. That's because right now,
Starting point is 00:11:10 your new customers can step up to the plate with a no-swept first vet up to $1,000. So don't miss your chance to get a no-sweet first bet up to $1,000 when you join Fandall today. Just go to fandle.com slash locked on to sign up.
Starting point is 00:11:29 Fandle, that's the official partner of Major League Baseball and Locked on. All right, I'm back in this episode of the Lockdown-Pangland's podcast. I am your host, Hunter Hodes. I'm going to follow me on Twitter at Hunter Hodes. Follow the shows, Twitter, Eleanor Shopanguins, and of course, thank you so much for making this. Your first listen to the day
Starting point is 00:11:47 where you're free and available on all platforms. I'm recording this just before the night two action and stand like a playoffs. We'll get to the playoffs a little later on in this show. But so off-season priorities for this team, I touched on my Monday episode. They have to go out and get another defenseman. Right now, you take Brian Dume on out.
Starting point is 00:12:07 Marcus Pedersons on your left side. P.O. Joseph, yeah, Ty Smith waiting in the minors. But do you really think a left side of Marcus Pedersen, P.O. Joseph, and Ty Smith is enticing to the new management group, especially, you know, if they're big on analytics. Even if they're not, I don't think so. I think you need a bona fide top pairing to second pairing defensemen on the left side to come in here and eat a lot of minutes. I like P.OJ. I thought he was awesome this season, but I don't know if he's fully ready to eat 22 to 24. minutes a night. You could find that out, but you also would have Ty Smith playing on your third pairing. And, you know, he was fine down in Wilkesbury, but, you know, is he someone you want
Starting point is 00:12:50 playing on an every night basis? You know, I have the defenseman in Calgary circled. Nikita Zedora, Rastas Anderson, Noah Hannafin. I'm sure there will be others out there in free agency and via trade. I'm going to get into some of those targets a little later on this week. In the coming weeks, but I do think they need a bona fide left-handed defenseman to either play with Jeff Petrie in the second pairing but more importantly, Chris Lettang on that top pairing because they can do Pedersen-Petri and be fine. That pairing was very good this set past season.
Starting point is 00:13:23 Up above water in shot attempts, above water and squint chances, above water and high danger chances and expected goals. It was probably the best pairing on the team. But with how comfortable Latang was, to Dumlin, you've got to try to rekindle that with bringing someone in who can not only defend but can move the puck and also provide a little more offense than Dumlin did during his tenure. That's obviously assuming Dumlin walks, but I think it's a pretty good likelihood that he does.
Starting point is 00:13:52 So that's my first one. You all know it with goal tending. They got to get another guy in there. At least one, no, in a perfect role, it's two. And they do what the capitals did. And you find a taker for Casey and Smith and you let Trist and Jari walk. and you try to trade for someone else. You know, I was thinking maybe Demko in the off season,
Starting point is 00:14:12 but he also has a lot of injury concerns, and it looks like the Canucks are going ahead with him after he came back and played well for them in a second half of the season. You know, I would trade up all my assets for UC Soros. He makes a ton of sense for this team. You have John Gibson out there, but I think it's four years at what? Over six, about six and a half million per.
Starting point is 00:14:30 I just don't really know if the penguins want to do that. Gibson, fine goalie, not what he used to be, but they're kind of handcuffed there a little bit. I want at least one new goalie, though. You cannot run this tandem back, especially with a new management group coming in here who did not even inherit this goalie situation. That's just a no-go. You have to sort up a goal today. Those are my top two needs. Number three, bottom six.
Starting point is 00:15:01 I want probably three to four new forwards down there. I mean, Drew O'Connor, I would assume we'll stay, and I like his game. Ryan Paling, he might come back. I'm not sure. He's an RFA. They could choose not to qualify him, which would make him a UFA. I liked him in spurts. I think he deserves to maybe have another shop,
Starting point is 00:15:22 but I also could see a new manager team saying, hey, you know what? He didn't do enough. We're going to start fresh, deal it out the bottom six our way. That's a TBD on that. Jeff Carter, he's most like 99.99% chance he's going to be there unless something crazy happens. So those are two or three spots right there.
Starting point is 00:15:38 Otherwise, you have a few spots that are open, especially if they do buy out my Kyle Gremlin. I think getting Gremlin off this team is also another one of my big priorities for fixing this bottom six. If you cannot trade him and even attach a sweetener in that deal, whether it's a second round pick,
Starting point is 00:15:55 whether it's the third, I don't think you would need to do a first for that. Even if you're eating some of the salary, if you can't trade him to a bottom feeder or another team that maybe will take a flyer on him, even though it's two more years, I would buy him out. The cap savings for this season especially
Starting point is 00:16:13 would be worth that the penguins would get over $4 million in salary cap space if they were to buy out Greenland, if the worst comes to worse than they had to do that, it goes up in the next few seasons. I believe the penguins would only have $3 million the season after that, and I think a million or two in cap space in the next couple of seasons. The dead cap for this season is about 933, It goes up to about 1.8 for the remainder of the buyout.
Starting point is 00:16:37 Yes, the buyouts with him and Jack Johnson will be a little over to $2.5 million, but it would be something that I think would be necessary because I don't think there's a way he should be on this team next season. And I know that sounds harsh to some people because he only played 21 games, but he scored one useless goal in those games in a game that was over. Otherwise, he didn't do a thing. He was never a good fit here. I told everyone when he got here
Starting point is 00:17:04 This was probably going to be a bad move You know, I'll take a rare W on that This is not going to be a James Neal situation Where he just balls out in the second year People keep saying, oh, he had 60, 65 points the year before So what He played with Philip Forsberg, Matthew Sheen, Roman Yosey, Ryan Johansson
Starting point is 00:17:22 He's not going to get those minutes here Nor should he So, you know, in terms of proving the bottom six I would cup bait with him And I would bring in a couple four free agency via trade, you know, fit Mike Sullivan's system. Grindr-type players who can forecheck hard, defend well. And the Penguins had a minus 21 goal differential from their bottom six this season,
Starting point is 00:17:46 which is atrocious. That needs to be fixed heading into next season. You cannot have the top six. Do everything for you every game. I kept saying during the season it was going to be one of the best accomplishments of Cindy Crosby and of Guinea-Malkin were able to drag the rest of this team. and Chris is staying in, but top six in general were able to drag the rest of the team of the playoffs. The fact that they came a point away and they probably should have made it
Starting point is 00:18:09 if they would have won some of those gimmie games is a testament to how good that top six was. This team needs more depth scoring in the worst possible way. I don't bring back Josh Archibald. Denton Hinen can walk as well. Nick Benino, he can walk too. I think you're going to see a lot of changes made to that bottom six. And for a good reason. Those are my three main priorities for this off season.
Starting point is 00:18:37 Obviously, if they let Zucker walk, replacing him will be of the utmost importance, getting another top six winger in there because I don't think there's anyone else on the team that can have those minutes. So that's what I'm really looking for this. Obviously, you know, the hard parts are in place. The core is ready to go. You have a good top six. got to figure out the goalie.
Starting point is 00:19:01 If you can get average goaltending, that's fine. Got to figure out another department next to Latang. You got to sort out your forward depth. I don't think it's, you know, I don't want to say this. It would be hard to ice a worst bottom six next season with whoever comes in here as a general manager. It would be hard to top how awful that last bottom six was. So that is what I am looking for in terms of offseason priorities. If you want to go off the ice, I would bring in another assistant coach or two.
Starting point is 00:19:35 I would honestly relieve Mike Volucci of his duties. I don't really think he does anything, to be honest. His penalty kill has not been good the last couple of years, especially this year. It's gotten exposed in quite a few situations. Maybe he gets some attention for some head coaching opportunities. I know he had that last season. I think in Chicago, I think in Philadelphia, he got pretty far. There's a couple open right now in Washington and Columbus.
Starting point is 00:19:57 Anaheim is also open. We'll have to see if any more could become open. But I don't think, you know, I just don't think either way. He deserves to be back with this team next season. I don't think it did enough Todd Reardon. You know, I know the organization thinks very highly of him from what I've heard. But with how the power play was this year, I'm not really sure he deserves another crack at a next show.
Starting point is 00:20:22 But I think it's more likely if one coach goes, it's a leach. But that's also going to be up to the incoming new management. They're going to evaluate the coaching staff. as a whole. I expect myself in this day, TBD, on the assistance. So that will do it for my off-season priorities for this latest segment coming up to end the show. Talking Stanley Cup playoffs. A lot of fun stuff happened on Monday. We're going into what I expect to happen tonight, even though the games are about to kick off. So stick around for that. But before we do that, so I get my wonderful, wonderful promo here.
Starting point is 00:20:59 Is that it? Yes, it is. We do have to discuss athletic greens. They have a product I use literally every day. I started to keep taking them because, you know, when you have time in the morning, I want more energy. I don't really like taking pills and vitamins and all that. So what is this stuff?

I'm back in this episode of the Lockdown Penguins podcast. I am your host, Honor Hodes, know, follow me on Twitter at Hunter Hodes, follow this show's Twitter at L or so Pinguines, Elliot Freeman always doing the there is a point and warm up because of a rated point. That's always fun. So, Stanley Cup playoffs, great night on Monday night is,
Starting point is 00:22:36 I got to say it was a little bit weird. You know, I'm just kind of just had the games on in the background reading. I've started Air to the Empire just because I'm getting into, you know, had that in the back, had the games on the background was reading my book. I'll probably do that again tonight. It just feels weird. It doesn't feel right that the penguins are not in the playoffs right now,
Starting point is 00:22:59 that I'm not talking playoff hockey with you all like I happened for the last few seasons. Definitely feels odd. But last night, Bruins take a 1-0 series lead on the Panthers. Panthers, you know, they played pretty decently in that game. But, you know, if Alex Lyon is not going to play, you know, God mode, I don't think the Panthers stand a chance in this series. The Islander's Hurricanes game, Islanders can score. Sorokin can be as good as he wants, but unless they can actually score goals,
Starting point is 00:23:24 they're going to get blown to hell in that series. I don't think the Islanders are any good. At best, they're an average team with a superstar goalie. It's honestly a shame that the Penguins do not get in the playoffs over a very mid-team in the Islanders. The Islanders are not good. Had the Penguins taken care of business, it actually would be, I think, the Islanders who would have,
Starting point is 00:23:44 well, actually, standings-wise, no, I actually think the Ironers would have gotten in because the Panthers lost that last game. Have the penguins taken care of business? I'm actually pretty positive. It would have been the Panthers that missed the playoffs. And, you know, the penguins would have, I think, gotten the first wildcard spot and put me playing Carolina right now based on how everything else went.
Starting point is 00:24:06 But, you know, Islanders need to actually, you know, even with Barzell coming back, they got to find some scoring. It's not good enough. The Western games, that Dallas and Minnesota game was electric, you know, watching, you know, the team that left Minnesota, the North Stars play in Dallas now versus, you know, Minnesota getting a team back over two decades ago. That's a fun little rivalry. And you saw it last night.
Starting point is 00:24:31 That Matt Dumba hit, you know, it was not. Just the whole game was nasty. The Dumba hit, I don't really like too much. I just thought textbook interference. And with how Hurt Padooski was, I think you could have argued for a measure with that. I just, I'm sorry. I don't like seeing players, you know, have their brains turn into mashed potatoes on ice. You know, it's not like it was, it wasn't the worst.
Starting point is 00:24:52 Worst hit in the world. You know, we're not talking, you know, Ralphie Torres, decapitating someone, or Matt Cook back in the day, or Sean Thornton or even Tom Wilson from back in the day. But it was still a hit that I just don't like. And, you know,
Starting point is 00:25:05 Dumbah's been a pretty sneaky, dirty player for a while now. You know, Ryan Sooner, he was cross-checking the real Caprice off all the time. I don't really like that either. You know, people like to say,
Starting point is 00:25:16 oh, that's playoff hockey. No, it's not playoff hockey. It's just bad officiating. If the officials actually knew how to do, their jobs, I think we would see less and less of these really stupid plays. But playoff officiating is a sham. But that game was still fun. You know, Jake Gottinger was showing that he was him.
Starting point is 00:25:34 Ryan Hartman, great goal. I was a gutsy effort for him after he was banged up for most of that game. You know, Minnesota, they're trying to break that curse. They haven't won a series since 2015. Minnesota sports, it's always a fun time with their teams. But that was a really fun one to watch. the Kings Oilers game, their foot off the gas pedal. Don't know what was going on there.
Starting point is 00:25:56 They had a 3-1 lead with less than half a period to go. King scored to make it 3-2 with Kempbe. Then the Kopitar ties it with about 15 seconds left. And then the Kings win it in overtime. Big missed opportunity there for the Oilers. They should have won that game. Now they definitely have to strike back in game to the Kings. They're deeper this year.
Starting point is 00:26:13 They're faster. They took the Kings. They took the Oilers to 7 last year, and they actually almost beat them in six games because they had a chance to close down in LA, didn't have been lost in Edmonton in Game 7, curious to see if the rules get reversed this time and maybe LA is able to close it out.
Starting point is 00:26:28 But no, that's going to be really fun. One Connor McDavid, he was a one-man wrecking crew yet again. Leon Drysaw had a couple of goals. I'm kind of torn on, you know, McDavid carrying the Oilers during the height of his powers or them still failing epically and him like asking out or something like that.
Starting point is 00:26:47 You know, that would be very, very, very, very sad to say the least, but, you know, Night tonight, Ranger Devils, Leaves Lightning, got the Colorado Ambulance with the Seattle Cracken, and then you have the, uh, I just like forget. I mean, I'm sorry, people. This is embarrassing that I just like totally forgot. You know, Winnipeg, Vegas.
Starting point is 00:27:14 Jeez, Hunter, that's embarrassing. I apologize, people. At least Winnipeg's an easy one to forget, right? A lot of fun playoff hockey coming tonight.
