Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins - Which Penguins prospects impressed during Friday's prospects challenge?
Episode Date: September 16, 2023Friday was the first day of the Prospects Challenge and even though the Penguins lost, some decent hockey was still played. Jeff Taylor of Fly Penguins Fly joins Hunter for this episode since Patrick ...Damp had a couple of things come up. They first discuss their thoughts on the Pens-Bruins prospects game and who stood out. Did Sam Houde impress? What about Joel Blomqvist? Hunter also discusses a player who some may not have noticed that much, but he did. After that, the two dive into what it was like watching a game without any commentary since it was a completely different experience. Is this someone Jeff and Hunter enjoyed? Did more fans enjoy it, or would more fans enjoy it? That leads into some talk about the broadcasting crew for next year before they end the show with how exciting this event is since hockey is officially back.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Jase MedicalSave more than $360 by getting these lifesaving antibiotics with Jase Medical plus an additional $20 off by using code LOCKEDON at checkout on jasemedical.com. So penguins dropped their first game of the Prospects Challenge this weekend, 4 to 2.
They got off to a really crappy start in the game.
They go down 2-0 within the first few minutes.
They go down 1-0, actually, in the first 30 seconds to a minute.
I don't think anyone was ready to play.
But the penguins do storm back with a couple goals later in the game before they lost for 2.
one of these standout players, I thought for me, was Sam Hoot.
He got the first goal for the Penguins, and it was a goal, Jeff.
It's a classic net front goal where you know where to go to score goals.
He shoots the puck the first time for about five feet out, goes off the Bruins goalies pads.
He's able to get the puck around the Bruins goalie to make it to one.
This is a player that I don't know too much about, but he still really impressed me throughout this game.
had a couple other nice chances in the second and third period.
I really liked that goal that he scored to get the Penguins back in the game after
they really struggled out of the gate.
Absolutely.
It was a nose for the net kind of a goal.
I like that.
Stick with the play and he sniffed it out.
Got it done.
The second goal was a bit more chaotic.
I guess one of the Penguins players goes in on the Bruins goalie.
He kind of wipes out a little bit.
but Lucas Spakovsky was like, okay, I have the puck right here 10 feet out.
I'm just going to fire it into the open net after the puck came to him and the penguins tied
the game.
So Ksovsky, he's an interesting player.
So he spent this past season with Wilkesbury.
It was his first season with Wilkesbury, 47 games, three goals, 15 points before that,
played in the WHL for the medicine hat tigers and the Thunderbirds of the WHL,
22 goals, 45 points with the Thunderbirds and the Hat Tigers, 13 goals, 30 points with them.
This is the player who I want to see more of in Wilkesbury this year.
I feel like this is a crucial time for his development.
Kind of a right place, right time goal.
But still, I'm curious about him overall at the Prospects Challenge this week.
And I think he's kind of one of the players who has gone a little bit under the radar.
Yes, everyone wants to see how Sam Poulan does.
everyone wants to see how Raiden Yeager does.
I wish we could see how Owen Pickering could do,
but he's a bit banged up right now.
He's another one of the Penguins' top prospects.
But when it comes to Spakovsky,
he's a player who I think, again,
is definitely a little bit underrated in the system.
And this is a big year for his development.
Yeah, Tampa, Florida looks like, place of birth.
So American Southeast, but then also it says nation,
USA and Chechia,
for him. Interesting. That keeps the check, the check blood going in the penguins system. You mentioned
Sam Poulan as well. I had the medical appointment up at Cranberry the other day, tried to hustle over
as fast as I could during what would have been the prospect scrimmage, missed it, but saw Poulan
working on drills down in the corner with, I assume, a non-Pittsburg Penguins coach because they're
not allowed in those skates and digging for pucks, digging for pucks on the wall. And then I got to
watch Sam do that in this prospects challenge today, battling along the boards and looking
pretty strong.
So some of these names, the injured Owen Pickering, Nolan Collins, among others, something
about Pickering.
I know he's not out there today.
I know we're talking about this particular game, but he still feels like a player of destiny
of some kind to me.
There's something about the guy when you see him in person.
Back to the relevant thing, though.
I'll let you take it away.
Now, I mean, he's a big player for a defenseman.
I think he's still a few years away.
I remember a few people in the YouTube comments or just DM me and such.
He's like, oh, like, could Pickering make the team this year?
No, he's still quite a few years away, at least in my opinion.
I think the earliest time frame for him is probably at the very tail end of the Crosby, Malkin, Latangar.
You can probably add the Carlson to that era now because he's going to be finishing that off with the big three as well.
But I still kind of think of him as like a Brian Dumolin type.
player if he pans out the way a lot of people think he can it's just unfortunate that we really can see him as for
poohan yeah he battled again it's it's one game he's also going up against players who he probably
normally wouldn't be going up against yeah he's still someone who i think could make a difference
when training camp rolls around a couple other players that really should out to me the goalie joel blumquist
he's a little bit of an undersized goalie when you look at him but he didn't really play like that during
this game he let in a couple early goals
for the penguins, but after that, Jeff, he was spectacular.
I even put a tweet out during the first period when the penguins were killing a five on three
in the game, he was making save after save, after save, after save.
Some of them were acrobatic saves.
A couple of them were also on one-timers.
Really nice job from him.
I'm really curious to see how he keeps developing.
He's one of the better goalie prospects in the system.
He's not an inchel ready yet either.
I think he's still probably two, three years away, maybe a little bit more.
But curiously how he does in camp, but I really liked how he played in this one,
even in the second period when he allowed the Penguins to come back and tie it before
they lost the game later on.
But he really woke up after he allowed those two early goals.
I was really impressed with him.
I think nothing would make the land of Penguins fans happier than to know that a goalie
within the prospect system is maybe going to make a difference.
or be there to make a difference at the NHL level in the even relatively near future
with the reputation that the Penguins system has for being, quote, unquote, dried out
or talentless pool.
That's never really true in any NHL city because any player in the HL clubs or anywhere else
that's the property of one of these teams is high-level talent.
And you just never know at the end of the day who is going to.
to pan out, right? That's the biggest thing, I think, with prospects. Outside of mainly the top
three to five guys in each year's draft, you don't know how many of the other players are going to pan
out. It's kind of just a lottery ticket. Heck, even Braden Yeager, who I am pretty excited about,
I think he can make the NHL in the next three, four years. I still have the opinion that he's
probably going to be a winger at some point, because I don't think at this point in time he has what
it takes to be a 200 foot responsible center.
His shot is out of this world.
Let's say that.
He didn't get a chance to use it today.
I'm hoping he gets a chance to use it on Saturday.
But again, like a lot of these prospects in that range outside that top five, there's just, it's a lottery ticket.
I know you're about to say something, though.
Well, when you refer to his shot, a Yeager shot, we are referring to the Yeager bomb.
Yes.
Let's call it like it is.
and you know clap bomb yager bomb whatever you're going to call it his name is destined to be on the
back of a penguin sweater yager yager yager yes sir was my tweet the day he was drafted and you called a
hat trick today jep i jokingly sent out a tweet that said yager had he in the third so you know
i think we didn't quite get it he might have been on the cusp but i just love to i love to have a little
fun, especially when it's something like this.
I don't want to call it a meaningless affair.
It's anything but that. I mean, these guys are trying to make a name for themselves,
and they're getting out there and working as hard as they can.
It was a chippy game as well.
Right.
We look at the way Andonovsky played.
If I'm pronouncing his name correctly, I think I am, Corey Andonovsky.
He was really getting after it.
I think he and Abate had a dust up there almost, not a full-on Bob Probert versus,
oh gosh, what's the famous fight that I'm trying to think of right now?
I can't think of the Penguins player right now.
But one of the greatest fights ever.
I just watched it.
We'll drop it in the episode.
No, I can't do that.
Yeah, it's just fun to watch these guys go at it, give everything they have.
And even as you're watching these games, you're thinking, someday I'm going to say,
I remember tuning in and seeing Andanowski throw the Dukes a little bit.
And then fast forward to him getting a call up.
But he is a physical specimen.
I tell you, he is a strong 194 pounds.
just over six feet.
Yeah, I think we're going to see him in a penguin uniform at some point.
He's just that level of athlete.
He's going to crack the NHL roster at some point in the near future, I think.
I like it.
That's a good prediction.
I'm going to try to watch more of him for Saturday's game.
Another player who also stood out to me,
this is actually the last part that really stood out to me for this game.
Defenseman Ty Higgins had a couple really nice keeps in the offensive zone,
especially during the first period.
One of them almost led to the tying goal.
for the Penguins. Another one, he kind of batted puck out of midair, led to a scoring chance.
Again, I don't know too much about him personally, but I liked his game for this one, too.
But I think that will do it for this first segment of the show.
Coming up in the second segment, Jeff and I are going to discuss how watching this game was pretty interesting,
considering there was no play-by-play and no color commentary.
But before we discuss that, we got to get into Fandu.

All right, we're back here in this episode of the Locked-on Penguins podcast.
I am Hunter Hodey, is one of your host, joined by Jeff Taylor, the special guest.
So, yeah, I mean, Jeff, I honestly figured there would be commentary for this game.
I tune in the stream.
Nope, it's just you see the players skating back and forth.
You hear the ref making some noises.
You hear the fans getting into it.
It was actually a pretty surreal experience because I'm not used to that.
Usually, you know, when I'm watching something, I have the commentary on.
I know some other people kind of mute the Penguins TV broadcast and actually sync up the radio broadcast so they can hear Josh Gets off and Phil Bork and, hey, maybe they moved to TV this year.
We'll have to see what happens with that.
The Penguins haven't fully announced their plans for TV after they let Steve Mears and Bob Eric go.
But what did you think of watching this game without any commentary at all?
You know, it wasn't as jarring.
It was interesting, but it was reminiscent of tuning into a live barn feed.
at a rink during a beer league game, right?
You, I GMed a team after I was unable to continue playing with them
when I moved here to Pittsburgh.
I was still handling the admin side for a New Jersey beer league team.
And I'd check in on the games.
I'd pour myself a brew and watch.
And that's kind of what it was like, you know,
except a lot more people in attendance.
Usually there's nobody there for those beer league games.
But that's otherwise, that's what it felt like.
I almost wonder if it wasn't,
if one of the cameras, the main camera following the action wasn't possibly that feed or more
than likely they had a proper camera set up.
I know there were some close-ups at least two or three cameras going for the broadcast.
It looked pretty good.
Yeah, it's kind of nice.
They're wearing their practice jerseys out there with the penguins.
And I think it goes hand in hand.
You're really just getting a peek into a cool scrimmage.
It's really not an NHL matchup.
some great competition out there.
The Bruins did have their NHL-style jerseys on.
Clearly there was no conversation between the two camps as to what the attire,
you know, called for would be.
But yeah, it was cool.
It was cool to tune in.
Like you said, surreal, also a little serene.
I like the way you put it there.
And I know it might be jarring for some as well who don't know a lot of these
players.
And heck, you know, I still don't even know some of the players that are playing in
these games, especially on the Bruins side.
and I know people probably have to have the roster lineups on their computer next to them to be like,
oh, like, who scored?
I got to see it because it's, you know, you're not hearing it from the announcer.
But for this situation, it makes it a little more fun because I feel like, I guess for me,
I can follow it a little bit more.
I don't have to have an announcer just saying this and that and all this other stuff.
And I can make even more observations, I think, without having a play-by-play announcer and a color commentator talking.
I was, I really liked that part of it, especially during this.
And I'm excited to potentially, you know, do that again tomorrow when I tune in about noon when the penguins have another game.
Yeah.
And against my home state.
Yeah.
Against the New Jersey Devils prospects.
So we look for the penguins to clobber the New Jersey farm system.
That's, that's my hope.
And I do think, you know, you kind of alluded to it.
I saw you raise your hand when you kind of sync up the, you mute the TV.
Oh, yeah.
The radio broadcast.
I'm curious just for this, when there's no play-by-play, I wonder if this is going to make more people.
Maybe I'm talking to my butt here.
Who knows?
Sorry, people.
But I wonder if this is going to make people maybe want to watch more of the games on mute this season so they can, you know, see the ice and just make more observations and all that good stuff.
Because, again, like, I just had so much fun with it.
And, I mean, I felt like I was able to.
I'll admit this.
I was able to actually kind of talk to myself a little bit when I was watching it
because I'm like, oh, like this guy did this and this guy did that.
And sure, I was a little bit confused at times, but I was still able to follow it pretty
effectively even without play by play.
Obviously, that would help for more of like a casual audience, some of the newer people.
But I think for the people that, you know, are diehards especially, I think those people
are really going to potentially just go all in and, you know, maybe even.
sync up, you know, what's the word I'm looking for here?
I wouldn't say sync up, but I guess go all in and watch the games on mute so they can make some of their observations.
Yeah.
I mean, as a kid, I used to set the boom box up.
Like I had the double tape cassette player with the two buttons to hit play and record.
And I would watch whatever was on anything that was live, like a political speech or a sports game and just record myself doing the Knicks game growing up in the,
New York area or things like that. On the on the topic of the future of penguins tele, you know,
televised events and the home broadcast, I know we don't have anything official to report.
I did see one of the parties you mentioned and I won't name them. And I asked if they had
any information and it was a no comment response. And you know what? That's fine.
Whoever we get from that system, if it is a familiar name, and this is,
complete conjecture on my part. This is not a reporting of anything. If, as Josh Yoey reported in his
article, I'll reference that. There you go. It's your fault, Josh Yoey. I know a friend of your show and
ours as well. Right. You know, he reported that the possibility that Josh gets off might be the
the TV play-by-play guy. Now, that would be, that would save me the trouble of having to sink his call
up to the TV side because there he would be. Now, he's someone with a lot of television.
experience.
His career back to, I think it was Ithaca College on the upstate New York there,
and then moving over through the state of Illinois, where he was awarded sports broadcaster
of the year at one point.
Like he's really a traveled guy.
He worked with NBC sports during the, I think was it the, well, the 2010 Olympics.
He was there in person helping out when Crosby scored the golden goal.
So he's worked behind the scenes in a lot of different capacities to say nothing of his
amazing run here with the penguins, he's become the voice to me. I didn't think I would really
settle into someone who wasn't Mike Lang as quickly as I have as a, it's no secret on my podcast.
I'm reporting news occasionally, but I'm a fan. I'm a fan of the penguins. And I follow the team in
that sense. So yeah, I think we have some treats in store for us on the TV side. I'm excited to see
what this SportsNet, Pittsburgh Network, really, really turns into.
I am very, very curious to see who ends up in the radio play-by-play chair.
I agree with that.
I haven't really been able to give my thoughts.
Pat gave his when he had a guest on when I was out of the country on my anniversary
show with my girlfriend.
I would be all four Josh Getsoff and Phil Bork moving to TV.
I really like Gets off's calls.
He's very fluid when he calls hockey.
And I love Borky, obviously.
He will give it to the team.
when needed. He is not afraid of really just hammering the penguins when they're playing bad.
He's just a very honest color commentator. And I love that when I'm tuning into a broadcast
at any kind for a sport. They're the best. They're the best. I agree. And all the best is Steve Mears
and Bob Erie. They, you know, Bob Erie had been with the team for obviously a very long time,
Steve Mears. This was his childhood dream to call Penguins games, Jeff. So all the best of him.
And he nailed it. I think that Steve Mears and
Bob Berry are treasures.
I know on my podcast, I said who my favorites were in that sense,
but I truly will miss the sound of Bob Barry's voice.
And there was nothing lost in having Steve Mears call the games.
I think he was fantastic.
It's clear to me that he's going to be picked up for a job in a similar capacity
somewhere else soon.
I agree.
And I am very curious about the radio as well.
It's funny.
I don't think people will sync up the radio broadcast.
and mute the TV if it's Josh Gets off calling the game.
I don't think that's the case.
Do you remember that this was the night,
and forgive me for alluding to this,
but the night I had Mr. Yoey on our show for a live event,
last season, Penguins were away in Colorado.
Of course, we were seeing the television broadcast out there
at the coal mine where we were broadcasting from.
Later on, I got to hear the call that Josh did for Crosby's goal
in Colorado.
And it was mile high magic for Sydney Crosby.
And I asked Josh later, did you, did you have that call?
Josh gets off, that is, did you have that call prepared?
And he said, you know, I've prepared some calls in my time.
I will admit it, that one was off the cuff.
I mean, mile high magic.
Put that on a T-shirt, man.
Penguins fans, if he ends up on your TV broadcast, you got something good coming to you.
they hit the jackpot going from Mike Lang to him.
And it's very hard to replace a legend,
but they have done it very admirably ever since Mike retired.
But I believe that will do it for this second seven.
Coming up to end the show,
Jeff and I are going to discuss more about the prospect challenge.
Just how exciting this event is just because we're finally getting live hockey
for the first time in Guadal.
But before we discussed that,
everyone should be empowered to care for themselves
and their loved ones during the unexpected.

All right, we're back here on this Friday edition of the Locked on Penguins podcast.
I am your host, Hunter Hode's with me is Jeffrey Taylor.
Jeff, how excited were you to sit down today and actually watch hockey for the first time in over two months?
Even though it's a prospect scheme, even only it took a couple hours, Penguins lost.
How excited were you to just sit down and watch some hockey?
Hunter, we live in the Pittsburgh area, do you and I.
We woke up this morning to a crisp autumn chill.
I mean, I had a zip up on.
I sat out on the front porch and made some turmeric tea,
because I'm trying to chill it out these days with the coffee.
I was ready for some hockey.
It just felt like a great day for hockey in every sense of the word.
And we had it.
Actually, I forgot in that moment, I thought,
hmm, this is hockey weather.
And it just, it was the day.
It just, you can't write it any better than that.
Now they're on the road and they're playing up in Buffalo, another chilly place.
So I think they were probably feeling it too.
And then it showed on the ice.
They were really ready to go.
Both teams brought a lot of fire to the ice.
And boy, yeah, I was excited just to see those crests out there,
even if they were contained within the much smaller circle of the practice jersey,
which I got to get one of those at some point, a black one.
and maybe I'll get hoodies on the back.
What would be your jersey number, Hunter,
if you had to throw one on the back of a Penguins practice jersey for you?
My jersey number, I mean, that's actually interesting.
I would probably go, hey, got me on the spot here.
I'd actually go 24.
I've always been a fan of that number for a long time.
That's the number of Christian Humphreys,
Cannonsburg Native, who is a member of Team USA, 18.
U-18 squad.
That's a good, I did not know that.
February, he's born February 4th, and
come on, he's going to go all the way.
We're going to watch the hometown guy, make his journey
all the way. So you'd be 24.
I wear 53.
It's...
Teddy Bluger.
Teddy Blugher. I am actually of Latvian descent,
so we share that ancestral blood.
It was actually the year my father was born.
I lost him when I was young, so 53 kind of became my
JV basketball number and whatever else I ever.
got to pick a number four, which was basically nothing.
Well, that is a good number for numerous reasons.
And yeah, I mean, you hit the nail on the head with the weather, especially, Jeff,
which is waking up today and especially yesterday, there's that autumn breeze that you can feel.
And it's like, yep, fall is right around the corner.
And that means hockey season.
And you can just tell, especially even with the weather during the day, it's like, oh, yeah,
you're in the high 60s, low 70s.
we are getting close now to full hockey weather and it's awesome again even though it was just a
prospect challenge seeing some of the players who you know some people really dive into these players
even more than me and some of the other shows some of some people this is their you know
championship all that other stuff and it was just fun seeing these guys go at it give their
110% for the first time in a couple months i always will cherish watching
any kind of hockey when it comes around penguins related.
Absolutely.
And I think a lot of NHL fans who don't follow, let's say, for example, the AHL is closely
and our affiliate Wilkesbury penguins, there are Wilkesbury fans out there, right?
Like when you go to a game, there are people who have jersey upon jersey of different
special events that Wilkes has done.
And they follow the Wilkesbury team.
So an event like this for them is doubly exciting.
This is the bridge for some of these players to showcase themselves.
And those fans would say, oh, I could have told you all about Ty Glover.
I could have told you all about Jordan Frasca.
So, you know, these are exciting moments for these players.
And especially for those AHL fans or fans of the Q, all right, we have a couple of players
from the QMJHL in Aguilar and Bellevaux.
And it goes on, actually, wait, I'm forgetting Ty Higgins as well.
Yeah. So it's an exciting event all around. We're getting amped for October 10th.
I mean, I'm going to the preseason split squad next Sunday, the 1 p.m. And, you know, we all know the big faceoff is on the way.
Connor Bedard and Sidney Crosby is going to go down unless for some strange reason,
98 doesn't make the opening night roster. And I can't imagine that being the case in Chicago.
No, that's he will be on the opening a roster and he will be taking that face off.
against Syracan.
How stoked are you, Hunter, for that?
I mean, I'm going to try to be there.
I will 100% try to be there to watch that.
That's going to be an awesome spectacle, I think, is the way to say it.
And the Penguins will be back in action on Saturday, as you said, against your home state,
and they'll be playing the devil's early afternoon on Saturday during all of the college football games.
The college football slate is really bad this weekend.
So if you have nothing to do tomorrow and your team is not playing and you're a college football fan,
tune into the Penguins prospects and go on your computer and watch it for free.
That would be a perfect Saturday for you all.
But I think this will do it for this episode of the Locked-on Penguins podcast.
Jeff, I really appreciate you coming on for the first time.
Can you let everyone know where they can find the show and where they can find you?
And I will shout out Jordan on social media.
Absolutely.
Yeah, Jordan DeFigio is my co-host on Fly Penguins Fly Podcast.

We have a great time and I'll just say making our podcast and I'll just say again to all of your listeners,
I'm echoing their sentiments as well. Hunter, you are a treasure of the Pittsburgh Penguins universe
and all of the things that you do.
You are an incredibly knowledgeable person on the X's and O side and you also bring a lot of fun
and openness to your listeners.
I'm grateful for you.
I really appreciate that.
And I know you definitely probably feel the same way about Pat as well after I brought him on.
Patrick Damp, he's been doing such a fantastic job.
And in the couple of episodes when you were out of town, I really thought he nailed it.
I did want to mention Patrick and I haven't actually met yet in person.
So shout out to Patrick doing a fantastic job on Elo Penguins.
