to get started. A bit later on in the show, Pat and I are going to continue our season
in review series with both goaltenders this year, Artie Shilovs and Stuart Skinner, but before we
get to those season in reviews, unfortunately, Pat, Wilkesbury's season ended on Sunday night,
a two-to-one loss to the Toronto Marley's in game six. The series was tied going into Friday.
Marley's win game five. They then come back to Wilkesbury Scranton, and they're able to win it in
overtime, thanks to had to be a former penguin. And Alex Nealander, he scores the game
winning goal with 6-16.
That's honestly a pretty nice goal at a couple of guys draped around him.
Harrison Brunich going down to block the shot, somehow squeaks through and then beat
Sergei Murashov after Murashov was fantastic.
And that overtime really matching the Marley's goaltender, he was also just on bath salts
that not just for that overtime, but for the entire game.
But Pat, I want to take this moment to discuss two players who I felt were really good
about the playoffs.
I think the two best players for Wilkesbury.
and that were Harrison Brunick and Sergey Marashov.
Brunich, I felt, was the best player on Wilkeshire.
I felt he was tremendous in all three zones.
He defended very well.
He showed some physicality a lot more compared to what we saw in the early stages of
the season.
And honestly, I felt his overall game was just night and day better compared to what
we saw at the beginning of the season.
He goes back to junior, works out some of the Kings, he plays well there,
comes back to Wilkesbury at the end of his junior season,
bring some of that momentum from the regular season into the playoffs.
And he was just phenomenal.
I think he is going to be on this roster to start the 26, 27 season.
I understand that there are still quite a few moves to be made,
but I still think he is going to be there.
And, of course, I feel the same way about Sergey Mershov.
I think that was his last game in Wilkesbury.
It's funny, you talked about a couple of instances earlier in the playoffs
where you felt his game went down a little bit.
I pushed back a little bit at that point.
my problem was a bit in this series, Pat,
where it felt like games three through five,
I felt you saw a little bit of a dip in his play.
It just was uncharacteristic from him,
considering how well he was playing in the first two series.
I still felt he played relatively well in the first two games.
I know he had that weird moment in game two with the overtime goal,
misplayed it,
but also I think bad luck there.
You could have had an interference situation.
But overall, I still felt he had a good,
playoff minus a few games finished with a 931 save percentage 2.11 goals against average those two
to me or wilkesbury's best players in this run it's really hard to argue with a 931 save
percentage throughout a playoff run when you play 15 games that's not a small sample size that's
more than enough to tell you that he performed extremely well in the postseason and just to clarify
It wasn't any sort of worry.
It was more just he had some uncharacteristic moments and some subpar moments,
but that's to be expected of a goalie at his age in learning how to be a professional.
He was never going to be perfect.
He was never going to be flawless.
There's no such thing, especially in pro sports.
And as for Harrison Brunick, just an incredible amount of growth from him in this postseason run
and his time with the baby penguins.
we've talked about it so much on this show.
There were so many things you saw in his brief stint in the NHL this past year
that were well ahead of schedule.
His vision, his puck handling, his first pass, even his skating was solid.
But part of his defending, part of his angling in the defensive zone and his net front defense,
they left a lot to be desired.
It was the exact opposite in his.
his time with the Wilkes-Barreth and Penguins.
Now, of course, it's the H.L.
That is not the NHL.
We will see how he can continue to grow and adapt should he get back to the
NHL level.
But a lot of the things that were a concern after he was sent back to junior
are less of a concern now that he's going to turn pro going into next year.
Yeah.
We'll see if he's able to become a full-time NHLer next.
year or if he's going to need some time to continue to develop in the
HL, which as I will remind people, especially defensemen, they take a while.
There are very few young defensemen who make the leap and are able to stay and be
consistent as an NHL defenseman.
Maybe Brunick is one of those few, but if it gets to the point where we're a month
or two into the season next year, should he make the roster, any struggle?
and has to go back to the HL, it's not an indictment on him.
He's going to need some time to grow.
But overall, in this postseason, not only was he Wilkesbury's best player,
there were a lot of games in all three series where he was the best player on the ice
and says a lot about where his game is.
I agree.
And, you know, right now I see him penciled in onto that third pair for next season.
And that's assuming Kyle Dubis doesn't do anything on the right side.
of the defense pat going out and adding a debt player via free agency or going out and trading
for someone who you maybe see as a longer term top four option obviously with letang getting another
year older carlson getting another year older so but right now i have him on that third pair
at least to start for next season play great down the stretch continue to mature work on aspects of
his game i agree with you about the net front defense that was a big struggle for him early on in the
season and I felt that he was doing a better job of that here in the way else and again pat he was
also more physical you know you never really notice that too much when you go back and watch some
of his junior tape or even some of his NHL tape from earlier this year but he worked on that aspect of
his game as well he's kind of turned into a little you know mini mean player and I actually like
that he already has a lot of good other skill but I like that he's added a little bit more snarl
to his game as well and as for moroshov you know I think he's going to be the backup to art
she loves to start next season. Now, Pat, we get to see, okay, you've done well in the A.
How do you do when you're going up against NHL shooters for a full season? Like, that's obviously
going to be his biggest test yet. You know, if he hits his full ceiling, obviously that helps
matters a lot when it comes to this rebuild. But, you know, what is his overall ceiling still going
to be? I think that's just the biggest question because, yeah, he's played really well in every
level of hockey that he has played at throughout his career, this is going to be his biggest test.
And I'm excited to see how does he adjust to it next season?
I mean, just seeing his post game comments where he basically said it's, he wanted to cry,
to be honest, like he was really emotional after that game.
But it was less about him, about him and the baby penguins losing and being eliminated.
And more about him saying, I want these opportunities.
I want the ability and the chances to play in these big moments, in these high leverage moments.
And I keep saying it about Murashav.
He's a kid in his early 20s and he's already that's mature.
When you're playing the position of goalie, which is, as we all know,
the maybe most scrutinized position in hockey.
And he's already got that perspective of, you know, I'm not saying he's not worried about the wins and losses.
as you could tell this one hurt.
But the fact that his mindset was more,
I'm in these moments,
I want to be in these moments,
says a lot about him.
And I would be remissed
if I didn't also mention just
the play of the Toronto Marley's
in this series.
Now, granted,
it's two different franchises in two different places.
The Leafs are either going to have to come to a retool rebuild
in the next year or two, or they're going to remain in go-for-it mode.
So they only had a couple of real prospects on their team.
A lot of their team was HL lifers and in-between players.
So that to me was also kind of the difference in this series,
along with, speaking of goalies,
Actyamov, more or less out-duled Sergei Muroshov.
You look at the series going four-two.
I don't think it was a big,
a big gap between the two, but they're going to the Calder Cup finals.
Baby Penguins are not.
So Acty Amov deserves a ton of credit for playing incredibly well against the baby penguins.
And it wasn't the difference, but it certainly helped their case.
He was on bath salts in that overtime last night.
It was amazing end to end action.
And he made a number of elite level saves.
One of them on Dili Coivinen, Mikhail O'Lean, had a great chance.
Tanner Howell had a great chance.
I can keep going down the list, Pat.
He was phenomenal in that overtime.
He was also great in that third period
and bringing it out to a bigger stage.
He was just great all series as well.
So, no, we'll see maybe Pat.
Do the Leafs have their goaltender of the future there at some point too?
Time will tell, but he was very good in this series.
And I also want to shout out Easton Cowan.
Had that mess up early on in the series,
giving the game away to Rucker McGority.
after that he was lights out good.
He was a big reason why the Marleys were able to win this series over the Wilkesburg Scranton
and Penguins.
So unfortunate as it is that Wilkesbury got eliminated, there were still some positive to take
out of this series and this playoff run, especially Brunick and Murshov.
And that's going to do it for this first segment.
Coming up in the second segment, Pat and I are going to take a look at a couple other players
who he felt also had some really good playoffs as a whole players that you should have
your eyes on heading into next season.
and that's coming up right after this.
But before we get to that,
we have to tell you all about one of our sponsors,
which is Fandall.
The biggest stage in World Soccer is here.
The FIFA World Cup starts this week,
and every match feels like it has the potential
for a memorable moment.
One goal can completely change the energy of a game,
shift momentum, and alter the outcome in an instant.
Gatsun makes Torment Soccer so exciting
from the opening whistle to the final kick.
Now, Fandle is giving fans another reason to stay locked
into every match with every goal pays.
Bet on a match.
match and get bonus bets for every goal scored in that match.
More goals mean more bonus bets.
All you have to do is turn on your token.
I absolutely love the FIFA World Cup.
It only comes around every four years for reason.
And you get to see the best players in the world go at it on the biggest stage.
And it gets more people into this sport, which that's a great thing.
Soccer is awesome.
Hell, one of my favorite moments from one of the World Cups back in 2010, Landon
Donovan sends Team USA to the knockouts over Algeria.
I'll never get over that.
Trust me, people, you want to be tuning in to the FIFA World Cup.
From the opening whistle to the final kick, let there be goals on Fandall.
Visit fandle.com to get started right now.
All right, we're back here on the Monday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast.
I'm one of your host, Hunter Hodes, joined by my host, Patrick Damp,
and Pat, outside of Brunich and Murashav, to be honest,
I wanted to see more consistency from Coivident and Magrorty.
they had some moments throughout the playoffs,
but I don't feel like it was to the point where I was fully satisfied.
And, you know, that has me, you know, still a little concerned going into next season.
I wanted to see more from them.
I loved McGority's goal in the Marley series.
He showed he had that dog in him for that big moment.
But from an overall consistency basis, I wanted to see more from him in these playoffs.
Same thing for Coivin.
He was getting a bit hotter, you know, as you saw in the Marley series.
I still felt like Pat, I'm not trying to fully criticize them.
I just felt they could have rose to another level in this series in general, in my opinion.
I don't disagree, but I don't agree also don't agree either.
I think that, you know, when you look at the fact that both McGrorty and Coyvenin were tied for the team lead in goals in this playoff run,
And this was, for the most part, on Wilkes-Bair's account, a playoff run by committee.
There wasn't really a dominating force that really drove them to the conference final.
You can make the argument for Sergei Murashov because of how great he was in net.
And if, you know, you're only giving up about two goals a game and you only need to score three,
that's really the story of the playoff run.
But I would have liked to see both Covenant and McRourty do a little bit more,
or be at least a little bit more productive.
But at the end of the day, you look at the fact that these guys produced in high leverage
moments more so than just empty calories.
They weren't filling their boots in games one and two when the stakes weren't as high
or they were just kind of getting empty calorie insurance goals or insurance tallies.
Both had a couple of game winners.
Both were parts of game tying and game winning goals and overtime goals.
So they showed up in high leverage moments.
Now, I would like to have seen them put their stamp down a little more, so to speak,
as in some more signature moments.
But I was just left wanting more just from two,
prospects who, you know, I want to see make it at the actual level.
I think that is the best way of putting it is that we, I'm not dissatisfied with how
either of them played. I thought Coyvenin took a lot of steps forward in this playoff run.
He did a lot of things that similar in an aspect to Brunich.
He did a lot of things that when he was at the NHL level, we scrutinized and said he's got to
get better at this. And Coyvenin went down to the H.L.
and instead of just leaning on being an elite offensive producer at the AHL level,
he put an edge into his game.
He was a lot more physical.
He was a lot more effective on the walls.
McGrady, he's the one that I'm not worried about just yet because we know what kind of game he is.
He's going to be a middle six forward at his ceiling.
He's not going to be a top line player.
He's not going to be a big time goal score.
He's going to be a very effective two-way forward.
should he reach his peak.
But at the AHL level,
I wanted to see him do a little bit more.
I wanted him to either produce a little bit more
or play with a little bit more of an edge.
Again, not dissatisfied with the way he played.
I think he did quite a bit.
But I just want to see him go to another level,
just maybe a half step up.
But he's still young.
He's still got a lot of untapped potential.
And I still think he is going,
to eventually reach it because he's a very mature, very serious prospect who takes this.
He's not somebody that we're going to have to worry about.
Does he want to be here?
Does he want to play?
He wants all that stuff.
It just might take a little longer than we want.
Yeah, I understand that aspect.
And I'm not like, you know, trying to crap on them or anything like that.
I don't think they were awful in the playoffs.
They both had some really good moments.
At the end of the day, I was just felt, was just wanting a little bit more from
both of them, just going into the offseason, going into training camp, all that stuff.
But some players that I did think took step forwards, number one, Pat, Bill's on in.
I felt it was only 11 games, small sample, but he made his mark, four goals and seven points
during that time.
He had a remarkable end to his junior season in the queue this year for the Armada.
He carried that momentum into the Calder Cup playoffs.
I still think that he needs one full season in the HL before he's ready for the big show in the
NHL, but I felt he was fantastic in these playoffs. I was a big fan of the way he played.
Great stuff from him. I'll shout out Tanner Howl as well.
Missed a good chunk of this season. He was still coming back from ACL surgery, but I think
he showed in these playoffs that he can be a player down the line for this organization, you know,
in that, you know, middle six to bottom six role, loves to hang out around the front of the
net. He's a total pass to play against. Three goals, five points in 14 games. I'm also excited to
see what he can do next season in the A. Maybe he gets called up.
at some point next year.
And then finally, Pat, my last big shout out,
McKale, I thought he was very good in these playoffs.
Spent the regular season on loan in the KHL, 14 goals, 44 points, and 68 games.
But after Elean's season ended,
join Wilkesbury, Scranton, and it didn't really take him that long to really adjust
to the ice in North America.
Two goals, nine points in 15 games.
His vision is really strong out there.
I like his playmaking ability.
also of course has that underrated release you know this is someone that i do think more fans
need to be paying attention to going forward i the you hit on the biggest thing for ilion i was
fully ready and expecting that adjustment period and we know we do it sometimes fans definitely do
it other pundits do it we overreact and get impatient to prospects where they don't come over and
immediately light the world on fire.
We're like, ah, he's a bust or he's disappointing or whatever.
Ilyan was like, yeah, screw that.
I'm going to come over to the HL and I'm just not going to miss a beat.
He played extremely well.
And again, we don't want to overhype it.
We don't want to put too much, too much behind it.
But the makings of a useful, productive NHL player in the future seem to be there.
So we'll see what happens with him.
Here's going to be, because I spent a large portion of my day, listening to one of my other
favorite pods, the rewatchables.
This is going to be my hottest take award.
I don't think he's going to make it out of camp,
but I wouldn't be shocked to see Zonan in the NHL next year.
Because I know.
If he lights up the gay, potentially, if he lights it up, yeah.
I know that this is a little bit of hype and PR on the penguins,
on the penguin's side where they talked about he showed up from Junior and they're like,
okay, we're going to take you through the film.
And he's like, I don't worry.
I already watched it.
Yeah.
But if that's even half true, the kid is prepared.
The kid is a, I'll just say it, a hockey nerd.
And if he's that serious already and he was this good,
this wasn't like he showed up to play in the HL in January,
where you're mostly just playing on the weekends,
you're in the dog days,
and there's going to be teams that are poached because their NHL affiliate
has a bunch of injuries or they're just not that good.
It was in the Calder Cup playoffs, and he showed up and did not look out of place.
He has a good summer.
He has a good start to the season with the baby penguins.
The penguins hit some injuries or some guys are underperforming.
Wouldn't be shocked to see him get a cup of coffee and a taste in the NHL next year
because he looks like a player.
And we kind of forget with all the three picks that the penguins made in the first round last summer
between him, Kindle and Horcough.
The talk around Zonan was he might be the closest to NHL ready of any of these three picks.
And that kind of looks like it might be true if he showed up to the HL played this well.
Now, he's going to have to earn it.
He's going to have to prove it.
But there is a lot to like about his game.
And I can see a lot of it translating to the NHL.
Yeah, I agree.
Especially just the way that he.
he sees the ice the way that he's also really underrated in front of the net.
I also really love his skating ability.
I like his playmaking ability as well.
He's just a really smart player when he plays.
And I'm excited to see how he does when he starts the season next year in the A,
unless he has a great training camp like Ben Kendall did this past year, Pat,
and just leaves the organization no choice but to put him on the main roster.
But I still think he's probably a year or so away from being.
a potential full-time NHL player.
So maybe he still does get a call up next year.
If he lights up the A, wouldn't be totally surprised.
I'm just going, based on how he ended his junior season, how he did here,
and what he'll be doing heading into next season with Mikhail Ilian.
I'm also kind of there too where he probably needs at least one full season in the A
before he's potentially ready to see some initial action unless he also lights it up down there.
Maybe he's a call up in case someone gets hurt.
but the players that I highlighted here, mainly in this segment,
you know, Tanner Howell, McHale, Aalian, and Bill Zonan,
just really impressed with them in the playoffs as well.
So that's going to do it for this second segment.
Coming up to end the show, Pat and I are continuing our season and review series
with Artie Shilovs and Stuart Skinner.
That's coming up right after this.
But before we get to that, we have to tell you about one more sponsor,
which is five-hour energy.
If you've got a sweet tooth like I do,
You know how tough it is to find that perfect tree without all the sugar.
That's why the fruity rainbow five-hour energy shot brings that nostalgic flavor back in a whole new way.
Fruty rainbow, five-hour energy shots, treat your taste buds to an explosion of fruity flavor with a tasty caffeine kick.
It's a quick, easy way to satisfy that sweet craving while keeping things simple and on the go.
I love having a zero-sugar treat.
That's a sweet tooth approved.
I like how convenient it is.
It's a small, portable shot that I can grab whenever I need a little pick-me-up.
It's become my go-to when I want something sweet.
without going overboard.

All right, we're back here on the Monday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast.
I'm one of your host, Hunter Hodes, joined by my host, Patrick Damp.
And it's time to discuss the two goalies this year.
We're not going to discuss Trish and Jari because he was only available for a couple
months before he got traded.
So we're discussing artist Shilovs for his full season,
and then Stuart Skinner after he was acquired by the Penguins in the Jari trade.
Honestly, I'm going to give both goalies a B for this season.
May sound weird to some people, but with Artie, definitely a bit up and down during the regular season.
You look at his regular numbers from that time, 1912 and 8, 3.07 goals against average 888 save,
had some games where you see, okay, he's starting to put it together.
Then he'd have a stretch where it's like, okay, there's the inconsistible.
but when push came to shove in the playoffs he showcased his big game pedigree he had that
pedigree coming into the playoffs as someone who can really step up in big moments whether it was
international or in the a hl or in the national playoffs with the vancouver canucks when he pushed
the oilers to seven games and you saw the way he played especially once he took over for skinner
halfway through he was phenomenal game six i can't say enough about the performance that he had i
felt awful for him in that game.
He wasn't even able to see that Cam York shot,
but I still give him a B.
Skinner, you know, he did what I expected him to do.
Were there some inconsistencies?
Yeah, but he still gave the Penguins some decent goaltending
after coming over from Edmonton.
He was still far down the list of problems for the Penguins in the playoffs,
in my opinion.
I'll give him a B, though I don't think he is coming back next season.
I think there are going to be a handful of
suitors for him in free agency.
One team I keep coming back to, especially if this goalie leaves Florida, if Bob does leave
the pampheters, Pat, there's an opening right there.
Maybe they signed him to a short, short term contract.
That's just one team that I thought of for Stuart Skinner.
But those are my main thoughts on the two goalies this year.
I give them bees.
I do too.
They did what they needed to do.
There was no, there was nothing overly spectacular and there was nothing negative
about, well, I don't want to say nothing negative,
but they weren't drags on the team like it has been for quite a few years for the penguins.
And if you're a longtime listener of this show,
you have heard me talk about this quite a few times is I do think a lot of the penguins problems
stretching all the way back to 2019 do come back to goaltending.
We talked about lack of depth.
We talked about coaching, et cetera, et cetera.
but a through line to all of those since 2019 has basically been in the biggest moments,
the penguins weren't getting saves.
They've never needed a goalie, at least rarely have they needed a goalie to steal games.
And they, in the last few years, they have had goaltenders who were actively losing them games.
So for both R.D. Shilovs and Stuart Skinner, they made the saves they needed to make.
And then I will say in the playoffs, for two games, Stuart Skinner kept them in it.
He kept them in a position to win.
And that's really all you can ask of your goalie.
Game three, he wobbled a little bit.
And after losing, it was just time for a change.
You have to shake something up when you go down 3.0.
And then Artie Shilov's absolute gamer in games five and six, he was fabulous in those games.
And game four, very good.
Game four as well. He did an absolutely tremendous job. And the thing I keep coming back to with
Artie Shilovs is he's 25. He won't be 26 until late next season. He's shown a big game ability.
He's shown a lot of potential and he's still young. So I'm curious to see what he can grow into,
especially with Sergei Murashov nipping at his heels. So I do think for the first time in a while,
The penguins find themselves in a pretty solid position when it comes to goaltending.
As for Stuart Skinner, I again keep saying it.
He has played for two organizations that have never been known for defense.
And I think that is more, I think that gets him more crap than he deserves.
Don't think he's a tremendous goalie.
No one's ever going to confuse him for a Vesna candidate.
But you play behind two organizations that historically are known for being great offensively.
it's going to give your reputation a little bit of a knock,
but a solid 1A, 1B kind of goalie,
he gets you where you need to go.
That's why I also think that Florida would be good for him,
especially because I think the Panthers are going to take another run at this next season.
I think they're going to improve their defense as well.
You saw how structured they played,
winning those back-to-back Cups, Pat.
I just think a fit there makes too much sense.
We'll see if they go down that road.
But just a thought that I had to really end the episode.
but overall, the tandem you'll see next season, very most likely, is Artie Shilov and Sergey
Mirosha.
I would expect Artie to be the 1A.
Yes, I understand people.
He is an RFA right now, but I would be very surprised that the Penguins are not able to
work out a contract extension for him.
It's probably going to lean on the short-term range, Pat, probably two, three years,
something like that.
I don't think you need to give him a lot of term or anything like that.
I think you can give him two, two, three years have improved that he deserves
was potentially a bigger contract.
And then with Mershov, obviously he's cheap and he can be the 1B slash backup to start next season.
So those are my main thoughts on the goalies from this past year.
You know, for once, Pat, they finally were able to get some saves.
You know, it feels like it's been a while since we've been able to really say that on a more
consistent basis for this hockey team.
Hopefully it continues for next season.
But that's going to do it for the Monday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast.
Thank you all so much to take the time to,
listen to slash watch this one. Pat and I will be back with a fresh episode for you all on Tuesday
continuing our season review series. And hey, maybe we start getting into some draft stuff
because it's two and a half weeks away. My big board just about finalize and I am really excited
to share it with everyone on the pod. So for Patrick Damp, I am Hunter Hodes. Thank you all so much
tuning in. We appreciate it. We'll be back on Tuesday.
