Today, it is once again Fan Take Friday.
We're going to talk about who we think will make the lineup on opening night,
potential NHL expansion, and much more.
But first, Hunter, because it's Friday, and we like to have fun here.
Let's start the episode with a fun.
topic. This comes from Stereo Penguin on YouTube. What player jersey numbers do you see the
organization retiring? We know the obvious ones. 87 and 71 are absolutely going to hang in the rafters
one day. So let's have this discussion, Hunter. Two names and numbers in my opinion that are
also likely to go up in a few years, maybe a decade or something.
so from now, Chris LaTang in number 58 and Mark Andre Fleury in number 29.
I know that there has been that discussion recently amongst some Penguins fans in some
penguins media about you don't want to get too carried away with retired numbers because
they have to mean something.
And right now, the Penguins have all of three, 21, 66 and 68.
We know with Michelle Breyer that was honoring his life after he tragically passed away,
Mario Lemieux and Yarmir Yager speak for themselves.
Obviously, Sid and Gino, they will be right up there with them in the coming years.
Though I do think some people would have disagreements on Latang,
but I think 29, most people are going to want that retired.
Yeah, I'm with you.
for me with Letang, there's not a question about it. He is going up into the rafters and
rightfully so. He's the best defenseman in the franchise's history. He's been here for so long.
He's helped them win three Stanley Cups. He has put this team on his back so many times. We all know
87 and 71 have done it so many times as well, but don't forget about 58 there too. So to me,
he's a lock. And for the Hall of Fame, I wouldn't say he's a lock, but I think he is a lock. But I think he is
definitely going to get in at some point. Again, some people may disagree, that's fine,
but I think he's still going to get into the Hall of Fame. But those three are definitely
going up there to the Rafters. As for Mark Andre Fleury, I have had this take before,
and I will say it again, I would personally not do it, but I know that they're going to. Like,
for example, he's going into the Penguins Hall of Fame this year, and it's deserved. He
has had one hell of an NHL career. Well, his fan.
fantastic with the penguins. He's also been away for so long where I think for me,
I reserve like Jersey retirements for franchise icon or just cornerstone guys.
And to me, that's only Crosby Malkin. Let's hang. If you want to argue for Lurie that,
that's fine. But I would personally only do three. But I know for a fact they are going to
do four. And I think he's going to go up there as well. I mean, I get your point about wanting
franchise one jersey, maybe two jersey guys to go up there.
But the counter to that for me would be Yarmir Yager.
He played in pretty much half the league after leaving the penguins.
And I think the parallel that you can make there is less about the teams that they played
for and more about the amount of time they played for the penguins.
When you have Mark Andre Fleury, he played in totally.
total in 21 years in the NHL, 1,051 games, but 691 of them were with the Penguins.
When you go to Yarmir Yager, he played 1,733 games.
806 of them were with the penguins, the closest to it were the Rangers at 277.
And then you look at Flurry, 192 games with Vegas, 123 with Minnesota.
and 45 with Chicago.
So I understand your logic of why you might not want to do 29.
But I think in both cases, or not in both cases,
because Yager is already retired.
We talked about that on this very show.
It was also, you know, him and Mario.
And he was a franchise full cornerstone,
one of the four best players in the history of the franchise.
I think that's,
I understand what you're saying.
counter to that is, you know, when it's one of the four best players in the history of your franchise,
I think now that one just takes a little bit more precedent in my opinion. Don't give me wrong.
I love flour and he was going to be always one of my favorite penguins.
I just think it really should only be reserved for these select few players. But again,
that's maybe my old person yelling at cloud take. Well, then I'm going to keep pushing back here
because this, this opened up more of a can of worms than I thought it would. So this was a good start to
fan take Friday is by your logic then because we know that the top three players all time
to wear penguins jerseys are lemieux yager crosbie rank them in whatever order you would like
if you're going to apply that logic then i guess we think the penguin should retire 35 for tom barasso
because he was one of the best goalies in the penguins organization and it's flurry then barasso in my
opinion. So like, again, I'm not discounting your argument or even totally disagreeing with it,
but I think when you look at the way I'm looking at it is this. I'm looking at meaning to the franchise.
We talk about how we are in the twilight of the Penguins golden era where they won three Stanley
Cups. They got the first back to back Stanley Cup championships in the salary cap era.
This era, it didn't begin with Sid.
It began with Flurry.
He was the first piece.
He was the first real piece that they drafted when they went on that run of first or second overall picks with Flurry, then Gino, then Sid.
So when you really break it down, I think in the historical context, it's worth retire.
Yeah, I understand what you're saying.
And again, I assume I'm going to get pushed.
back and that is fine. I just think at the end of the day, I feel like I limit it to just a very,
very short exclusive club. And that's why I'm really only okay with obviously Mario,
Yager, Michelle Breyer, Crosby, Malkin, Latang. That's kind of where I stand on it.
I mean, the thing I will agree with you ever so slightly on is that when you do talk about this
group, 87, 71, and 58 have lasted longer in Pittsburgh.
Now, obviously, there were extenuating circumstances.
The expansion draft, Mark Andre Fleury, was not that affordable in a salary cap world
anymore after that 2017 Stanley Cup and everything.
But I can see in that extent that when you talk about these players from this era, 87's a lock.
71's a lock.
58, more than likely a lock.
29,
as this segment is showing.
It's a conversation.
Yeah, I think most people, fans, media, the organization included,
would probably land where I'm landing in that you're probably,
you should probably do it because he's,
he was on three Stanley Cup championships.
He was in a fourth Stanley Cup final.
he's going to be in your team Hall of Fame.
He just feels like the right kind of guy that you would do this for
rather than saying, hey, because listen,
the Penguins are one of the best teams of the expansion era and the modern era.
But let's also not get it twisted.
They're not the Montreal Canadians.
They're not the Boston Bruins.
People will laugh at this, but when I'm talking about the history of the NHL,
they're not the Toronto Maple Leafs.
There has been a lot of town.
that has come through the penguins, but they're going to be a huge part of the league
in the 200th anniversary because of how good they've been for the last 40 years.
But at the end of the day, I get your point of it's got to be rock solid.
But I think it's a damn good way to start fan take Friday.
And don't you worry, we got plenty more.
We're not just going to sit here and argue for 30 minutes over retired jersey numbers.
We got plenty more to get to on this Friday.
I believe they will actually retire it probably pretty soon, to be honest.
They're putting them in the Hall of Fame.
I assume it's only a matter of time until they actually do it and they put 29 up in the rafters.
The funny part about it is he might actually be the first of this group to get his number
retired from being honest.
So we'll see on that.
But like I said, we got plenty more to get to here on a fan take Friday edition of Locked on Penguins.
Stick with us.
We'll be right back right after this.

Welcome back to the Friday edition of Locked on Penguins.
Patrick Damp and Hunter Hode is here with you as always.
As we continue another fan take Friday,
we're going to lean more into the takes part of fan take Friday
because we got a couple of scorchers in the comments today.
First, Hunter, let's begin with this one because you were named specifically in this hot take.
This one comes from Mr. the Bish 29.
Hot take, EK65 surpasses Hunter's prediction and gets 85 plus points.
I mean, I wouldn't be upset if Eric Carlson got 85 plus points this year.
I will say, here's how I would think I could see this setting up.
We know that the Eastern Conference at this point has completely tilted the balance of power in the NHL,
whether it's the Atlantic Division or the Metropolitan Division.
So if you're a team in the east, you are going to have to be locked in pretty much every night because one bad week is going to probably knock you out of playoff position and put you behind the eight ball.
One good week might not do all that much for you because of how good this conference and these divisions are going to be this year.
So for this scenario of Carlson scoring 85 plus points, he is going to have to be what he was.
last year and locked in every single night.
That and we all know how great the Penguins offense was last year.
They had one of the best offenses in the entire NHL averaging well over three goals a game.
You're going to have to up that even more if you want to get Carlson to be over a point for game this season.
Because he finished last year, 66 points.
Four points off.
My 70 point bowl prediction, I was so close hitting that one.
I'm going to go for it again.
I think he hit 70 points this upcoming season, maybe a little bit more.
but I think for them to hit 85,
they're going to have to be an even better
offensive team, in my opinion.
So I love the bull prediction.
This is what Fan Take Friday is here for.
So I hope that you're right.
Hell, I hope both of us are right.
I get my 70 points and you get your 85 plus points
because it'll be nice for that bull prediction to hit,
you know, a year later.
I'll take it.
In putting aside the hot take prediction of it,
I do see a world where he could,
could get between 75 and 80 this year because he really does seem to enjoy playing under Dan
Mews.
We know that regardless of what the front office is doing, we talked about it yesterday near
the end of the show with everything that they have done throughout the draft and how they
have acquired all these assets and young prospects and everything.
We do know that the team itself, the coaching staff, the players, they still have this
screw you mentality because even after making the postseason last year as we start ramping up
toward the season you look at everybody's predictions again and it's not quite as bad as last
summer where everybody's saying ah the penguins are going to suck forget about them you don't need
to worry about the penguins it's only a little bit above where people are like uh you know last
year was fun but it was kind of a fluke where it's probably not going to happen again so you know
this team, especially the leaders and the veterans, are going to be motivated to say,
screw you, we're doing it again. Don't forget about us. So that could play a factor in it. But
let's move on to the next hot take because kind of like Jersey retirements is one that you
and I are probably going to have to have a bit of a longer conversation on. And this comes from
Ryan Brust, hot take. Covenin makes the lineup out of camp. I have to believe that Dubus didn't
write up that contract without proof he took big steps in the offseason. So this is where I
land on it, Hunter. I do think the contract fairly or unfairly has clouded people's judgment of
covenant. I agree with what the take is saying, but for a bit of a different reason. First is
they handed him that contract. So I imagine in a way, they're going to throw him to the wolves to start
the year. You got your raise, you got your eight years. It's put up or shut up time.
I can see him making the lineup out of camp and they keep him around for better or for worse
for like 20-ish games just to say like, all right, you worked, you had a good off season. We
rewarded you. We're going to give you a runway to prove you're worth that deal before we say,
ah, he struggled for five to ten games. We'll go. We'll let him go get some season.
in the AHA. This is going to be a, you're here. You've got to earn it now. Yeah, I agree with you on
that last point. He's going to have to earn everything in training camp in a couple of weeks in the
preseason, which is shorter now. He did make the team out of camp last year. I honestly thought
his camp was pretty solid. He just wasn't able to translate that in his past AHA success to
NHL success. We talked about a lot. He just looked at steps slow, wasn't playing well along the boards.
every time he was forced to make a decision, he would delay,
and that split-second delay, it's going to cost you in the NHL.
It may not do it in the AHL, but it's definitely going to do it in the NHL.
You know, there's another question here about a projected lineup for opening night.
I have mine, and personally, I don't have him in my projected opening night lineup right now,
but that can change depending on how he does in camp and depending on how some other forwards do at camp.
Like right now, I see about 10 to 11 forwards that are.
virtual walks for the opening night roster.
And then the final one, like that 12th forward in the lineup,
it's really a toss-up.
Him, Elmer Soder Blum, Avery Hayes, Rucker McGority, Justin Brise, Hendrixo, Hendrix LaPierre.
You know, it's going to be a race to the finish to see who gets that 12th forward
spot in the lineup.
And Coivin's going to have just as good of a shot as anyone else.
But, you know, as it right now, I don't have him in that projected lineup.
We can get to that in a second because,
I do have a projected lineup a couple weeks out from training camp.
Yeah, we will dive into the lineup in the final segment.
He does look bigger and stronger this offseason, which is big.
Like that's what we've needed to see from him.
Okay, how does that translate over to camp in the preseason?
Can you do more this year than last year to make yourself stand out and make this team,
but also last on this team?
Because, yeah, you can get a cup of coffee at times in the NHL.
but it's now on him to actually last in the lineup.
And we need to see if he can do that because so far he has not been able to do that yet.
You brought up an important point, I think about Kovinen as well.
And I think you can mesh two different things here with Vela Kovinen.
And that's he did look a half step behind a lot last year,
whether it was reactions, blocked shots, passes, you name,
it, he was about a half step behind the game action and the game speed.
But the other part of that to me is when you look at a lot of what he did in the
HL and a lot of what he did two years ago when he debuted near the end of the year,
confidence, I think, plays a huge role in his game.
I think if he does make the team out of camp, that's a confidence boost.
if he can have a solid first five-ish games,
that's another confidence boost.
Because I do think a lot of what ailed him last year,
he just thought too much.
There was just too much thinking.
It was, all right, I've got a lane, I've got the puck,
I've got to pick my head up, I got to shoot.
And by the time he made that process,
the opposing player adjusted, got in the lane,
put the fuck away, blocked the shot.
If he can have a good start,
even if he doesn't score because we know how snake bit he was last year,
hitting every post,
goal he's making ridiculous saves before he finally popped a couple of goals.
If he can kind of have a bit of a meshing of the way the season ended for him two years ago,
and the way it started this year,
because he played pretty well to start the year,
he just had horrible puck luck.
if you can mesh those two together, give him a little bit of confidence.
I do see him as a player that's able to stick because to bring this full circle to what I said at the beginning about the contract kind of clouding the way people are judging him.
He's still young.
He's still very talented.
It's just now that you slap that contract on him, everybody has, again, rightly or wrongly, inflated expectation.
I think with that and a few other things,
it's really just put up or shut up time with him.
And yes, you're right.
He has not played as many games yet.
He's so relatively young.
I am by no means giving up on him right now.
I think that'll be pretty mature.
What I am saying, though, is that I do think it's put up or shut up time,
and I want to see him take that next step in his career, in his development,
to not only make the team, but stick.
But again, it's on him because right now I don't have him in my projected roster.
that can change in a few weeks.
So if he goes out there and has one hell of a camp and one hell of a preseason,
I am sure they are going to give him every single opportunity out there to make this team.
They'll be doing it for some of the other younger players as well.
Yeah, there's a lot of veterans on this team right now.
And for my projected roster, as a small hint, I'm going to be siding with some of those vets to start the season.
But they're also not just going to be given jobs at the start.
They're also going to have to earn their spots as well.
That is what they call in the radio business, Hunter, a good tease because we are going to talk about the opening night lineup when we come back after this break. So stick with us. We'll be right back.
We're closing out the Friday edition, another fan take Friday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast. Patrick Damp and Hunter Hode is here going through it.
And as we ended the second segment, that's how we're beginning the third from our.
pal chance they ask what would your guys opening lineup be to start the year so let's keep that
discussion rolling i think at this point safe to say on the forward side your top six get a stone
tablet get a chisel and just start writing it because rakel crosbie rust chinikov novac malkin
that's your top six done and dusted very easy third line honestly i know i'll see that i'll probably
see this in the comments. Yeah, I'm pretty much just copy and pasting mine from the Puckpedia
projection. Your third line, Kuzmanko, Kindle Robertson, that'll probably be your third line.
The fourth line, as Hunter said, is where this gets a little bit sticky because you've got
quite a few extras. Blake Lazot, he will be your fourth line center. No questions there.
Connor Dewar, he will be on the fourth line, had a great year, very deserving.
contract. It's that 12th forward spot that is up for grabs between at minimum right now
four guys. And I'm only counting pretty much the guys that are on bigger deals, are quote
unquote vets. You have Coivinen, Omer Soderblum, Justin Brzeau, and LaPierre. So at this point,
to kind of build off of what I was saying in the second segment about Coivin, I
I think it's going to go to him.
I think if for no other reason,
you sign an eight year,
$4 million per deal
and to build off of what you said, Hunter,
they're going to give him every opportunity to earn it
because they clearly believe in him.
They clearly trust him.
Do I think it's the ideal?
Probably not.
I would much rather see Elmer Soderblom there to start the year
because he played extremely well down the stretch
and into the post season.
Justin Brazo, we all know how he started the year last year.
We thought he was going to win the damn rocket.
So that is going to be really tough.
As for defense, I think your first pair to start TVR and Eric Carlson.
I'm with you.
I think your second pair will probably be Carlisle and Latang.
And then your third pair.
And obviously, I'm just going through six defensemen here would be Gerard and Corsack to start the year.
And your goaltenders, obviously, Artersh.
Sergei Murrishov. Yeah, I am with you on basically that entire projected lineup
outside of that last spot on the fourth line. As of right now, I am penciling Elmer Sutterblom
to get that 12th forward spot. And then the 13th and 14th spot, if they decide to keep two pet,
I might side with the veterans right now because I got to see Ville Khoevenin go out there
and fully earn it during Canva preseason. I am going to side with Justin Briseau and Hendricks
Lafayere. But if Kovinen goes out there and is better during that time,
I don't think they will hesitate to put someone like Brazo on waivers or, you know,
even though they traded assets to get Hendricks-Loppierre, potentially not have him on the
opening night roster, I don't think they'd be afraid to do that.
And I know some people would be like, well, you traded assets to get him and you're just
going to not have them on the opening night roster.
I get those complaints and we got a few of them when the trade happened because, you know,
I understood.
But I just don't think they would hesitate.
do it if someone like coivenin or even another one of the younger players excuse me has a better
camp than someone like lapier now he shouldn't be discounted still but as of right now i had elmer
sotr blam winning that spot on the fourth line and then if i had to say an extra i'd kind of lean
towards brazo lapier but if someone like coivenin or avery hayes or ruck and grorty want to
switch that up that'd be fantastic and then the sixth defenseman i'm in a great
agreement with you as I am with the goalies.
So I think the last thing on the Fan Take Friday agenda,
well, last couple of things,
for expansion, Houston or Austin,
I am going Houston for that one.
I know Austin is very young, very up and coming,
but I think it makes the most sense to go to Houston here.
Already have the Texans,
already have the Astros,
already have the Rockets,
really underrated Sports Town in this country,
makes the most sense to go there.
I agree as well.
I think the main thing that you hit on is the right note is that Austin's up and coming.
And I do think inevitably,
I think at some point we are going to get into the 40s for pro teams.
There's just not enough talent to go there.
Like, I'm good.
Listen, I'm not going to,
I don't want to have the talent discussion.
I disagree to a certain extent,
not like horrifically.
I'm not going to sit here and tell you,
no, shut up.
We need 50 teams.
there's so much talent.
But I think it's just a population thing.
Like more cities are booming, more people have entertainment dollars.
So you're going to try to take advantage of that.
But yeah, Houston already has a pro sports audience.
They've got pro sports teams.
It would look really good to be there as well.
And with as massive as Texas is, I know a bunch of people are going to shake their heads.
Oh, another team in the South, yada, yada, yada.
But Texas is massive.
They have the population.
they have the money.
And this will annoy people.
It's going to be the same thing for Atlanta.
Atlanta has the population.
And you can complain about the flames and the thractors leaving.
The difference now is you have owners who know how to own sports teams.
And if you can find solid ownership that knows what they're doing, has deep pockets, it should be okay.
You just have to find that right ownership.
And Hunter, I know we got one more that you wanted to hit before we get out of here.
Yeah.
And I do also think at some point, Pat, they are going to go back to Atlanta.
I do think that is going to happen at some point down the line.
There's just been too many rumors about it over the last several years.
And I'm sure they're probably going to try to go back to Arizona at some point as well,
knowing how much Gary Bettman and Bill Dilley.
Love that area.
But this one comes from Allen C. Yoder from Twitter.
So he says he's a bit behind on podcast.
What are your must have can't miss giveaways theme nights this season?
I'd have to say the iceberg Legos talking Gino Bobblehead.
And my favorite has to be this one, which is the Jeff Jimerson,
Bobblehead.
I'll say this, man.
That Jeff Jimerson singing Bobblehead, Pat, looks awesome.
Though, I will say, isn't it a special event, Pat, if I have it, correct?
So I'm trying to figure it out myself.
I don't, like, I don't, I'm guessing that it's just like a special.
ticket that you have to buy.
So basically you have to buy the ticket.
It guarantees that you get the bobblehead.
It's not just a first X amount of fans through the gate get the bobblehead.
So you can find that on the Penguins website.
It's under their promotional tab.
It's under special ticket packages under the promotional schedule.
You can find it there.
I'm surprised you didn't say this one.
Mike Lang, catchphrase alarm clock.
I want Loretta to wake me up.
to tell me I got to look out.
I want grandma to know she's got to get in the fast lane so she doesn't miss the bingo game.
Need that to get me out of bed in the morning.
And the Gino one. Bingo.
I am scores.
All his catchphrases.
Just give me that one, please.
And you know what?
I'm going to,
I'm going to kind of move the question a little bit.
I'm not going to yuck people's yums.
If this is what you're into,
if this is what you want,
I'm going to tell you to go have fun,
enjoy it.
I'm just going to say it's not for me.
me the commemorative Stanley Cup ring.
I listen, it's cool.
I think it's a neat little thing that they're given away.
You weren't on the team.
You didn't win the Stanley Cup.
You are a hater.
Listen, I know I've got the banner behind me.
I know I've got all that stuff.
But like to me that that feels like a team thing, not a fan thing.
like you can get the banner you can get the t-shirt you can get the hat but the ring feels like
you were part of the organization that won the stanley cup that should be your thing but again like
i said if people are into it and people want it and people like it no hate for me on that just not for me
pat's a hater guys that's what he's trying to say here he is a total hater and that's just
the reality of the situation the one that i do really i think i may once once we finish recording
here. I may just go buy tickets to this game is the December 18th game for the 60th anniversary
poster. That poster looks really cool. And I think it would look pretty good behind me in my little
studio here. Yes, that would be great. Obviously, the 80s night t-shirt early on in the season,
sign me up for that. You can even, you know, dress up with hair like mine, honestly. It's pretty
rare when I come on to the show without a hat on just because I like wearing my nice hats.
But I wanted to show off the curls day. So,
If you want to get a wig like that, you can go to 80s night and get the t-shirt there.
The Hall of Fame game, obviously, that's always a good one.
The Star Wars game, you can get to see what costume Dan Potash wants to dress up as on set for everyone.
The 90s night is pretty good.
The 2017 Cup reunion Pat on January 31st, that is going to be a good one as well.
How about this one, though?
So you said the replica ring was not for you.
I'm going to say this one.
country night is not for me man i'm sorry i'm just not a country music fan i will not go to that game
