The Penguins were back in action on Friday in Cranberry for day two of training camp.
And of course, Hunter Hodes was there to cover it all.
We're going to talk about some standouts, including one of the goaltenders,
some line combinations and defensive pairing, and everything else right after this.

Preseason literally just a couple of days away and the regular season less than two weeks away.
So it is hockey season and you don't want to miss an episode.
So today, it's Fan Take Friday once again.
We had a poll question out there and we got plenty of responses.
If Getty Malkin, he might not be done just yet.
We will see.
But before we get into any of that, of course, it was day two of training camp,
the second full practice day at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex.
Hunter Hodes was there.
And you know what, Hunter?
we might as well pick up right where we left off when we started yesterday's episode with the
goalies because you were telling me right before we hit record, it was the return of one of these
goalies.
Yes, Sergei Murashav returned with a vengeance today.
I talked about how he was a bit off in the first practice.
I don't know if it was nerves.
I don't know if he was just fully uncomfortable because Eric Carlson and Brian Russ just
let him up for a 45 minute stretch.
during the first practice on Thursday.
And yeah, some of it again,
odd man rushes, breakaways,
you know, not the best circumstances for goalies.
But today, he responded really well.
And I will say,
Yo, Blumquist, had a really good day once again.
So it's really been cool to see both of these goaltenders
push each other, excuse me,
during this training camp.
So far, we'll have another practice, of course, on Saturday.
But Murashov looked very collected in the crease,
looked very confident in the crease. He was stopping literally everything that came his way.
Even on those two-on-ones, those breakaways, he looked more confident there. There was one
side of especially where he literally stuck his paddle out on Ilya Solov and made an insane save.
And that got the crowd going with some ooze and Oz a little bit. There was another one during
a 2V2 drill where Andre Kusmanko had a great pass to Ben Kindle and more on them in a second
because I think they're starting to develop some chemistry together.
And Kendall looks like he has a sure goal.
Murashov sticks his toe out and literally just flat out robs him.
So those two saves just there, and there's countless others.
Really good day for Murashov here at the office.
And it was kind of what I expected after Thursday.
He wasn't going to perform like that again at camp.
We still know that games are going to matter more.
That is very obvious.
But I felt like that he was going to respond on Friday.
And sure enough, we saw that really nice day for him.
For sure.
And that's good to hear because even though I said this yesterday that obviously the games are going to mean more and these drills that Dan Muses and the staff have them doing really put goaltenders at a disadvantage.
It is still good to see these guys jockeying back and forth, having good days, having standout performances.
Because whether they want to admit it or not, this is in fact.
a competition for a backup or 1B spot on the Penguins roster.
And Yoel Blumquist was that guy before Sergei Murrishov got on to the scene.
So huge for both of them in this camp.
The other thing that we should note today, and this does get a little bit into what
you were saying there, but we will eventually get to the Kindle Kuzmanko of it all.
A lot of players who are kind of.
on the bubble or are fighting for spots, but even though we expect most of them to start the year
in the HL, Hunter, you observed this a lot of them or with the NHL group today.
Yeah. So that was an interesting little wrinkle. That was kind of with group A after group B was
done. So during the group A, which again, each practice session is about 90 minutes, 45 minutes
on one rink, 45 minutes on the other one. And when group A came on the ice, this was
from about 11.30 a.m. to about 12, 15 p.m.
We saw during at least a drill for about 15 to 20 of those minutes,
the H.L. likely players were on one side,
and a lot of the expected NHL regulars were on the other side,
but there were some players who were jockeying for spots on the roster
with those expected angel regulars.
And those players were Owen Pickering,
Philip Hollander, and Harrison Brick.
And I liked everything I saw from those three,
today, especially Hollander, but once again, he is really jockeying for one of those forward
spots. He's had a really nice couple days of camp. He's skating like the wind out there,
and it's been really nice to see he talked a lot today, Pat, about how he knows he almost lost
hockey, just considering everything that he has been through throughout the last calendar year,
and, you know, he's putting paddle to the medal right now. It's a really nice start for him at
camp. Time will tell if he's able to win one of those spots, but he's really gunning for
them right now. Brunick and Pickering, they were paired together throughout the session today when
Group A came on the ice. I especially liked the way Brunick played, and again, Pickering was totally
good as well, but Brunick, I thought he skated well. I thought he defended in his own zone.
Well, he looked pretty confident out there. So it's exactly what you want him to do, even though, again,
I still think defensively, it's just really loaded on the right side and not sure they want him
on the left side, but he's still jockeying for a spot. And then some of the other plays,
players in the AHL group, Bill Zonan, who I thought had a pretty good day, Avery Hayes,
Tristan Brose, and Thomas Galvis.
Pretty quiet camp so far from Thomas Galvis, but I'm not really surprised by that,
and I also don't think it's a bad thing.
He's still kind of adjusting to ice here in North America.
Yes, he had a really good week last week at the Prospect Tournament,
but he's still kind of getting acclimated to everything here with this group at training camp.
if he heads back to check you and we've talked about how that's the most likely option
that's a good thing for me because he's still got to bulk up a little bit and he's still
got to develop a little bit more so quiet day from him but not the end of the role no reason
to get concerned about Tommy Galvis for sure and Galvis making the squad out of camp was
always an extreme long shot yeah wasn't out of the realm of possibilities wasn't impossible
but it was an extreme long shot and I would rather a player like
Galvis come in and say, hey, guess what?
I'm going to make this team.
I'm going to do it right out of camp and be motivated to do it.
Then come in and just kind of say, hey, guess what?
I'm happy to be here.
So I like that fire and that motivation from him.
Now, let's finish up this segment here, Hunter, with something you hinted at a little bit
ago.
We have the two of us, that is, said for a while now that we expect that third line to be
Ben Kindle, centering Kuzmanko and Robertson.
And even though Robertson has been getting some looks up with Sidney Crosby
these first couple of days, it has been Kindle and Kuzmenko, and it looks like these two
right off the bat are hitting it off.
Yeah, they read off each other really well.
That's been pretty evident in the drills that they have run these first two days,
whether it's 2 v2 drills, whether it's 3 v3 drills or whether we go.
to the full five-on-five, which they do for the second half of the session.
When they move over to the main ring, they do a lot of five-on-five drills over there.
I really have liked what I have seen from those two.
And they just feel like a natural fit together on the third line.
Robertson, this was another day where he was on the top line with Crosby and Raquel.
And granted, yes, some of these players are in different groups, so you're getting new combinations.
But I feel like Robertson has been hitting it off pretty well with Sid.
I thought he had another good day-to-day.
He was really showcasing his release and blistering the puck past the goaltenders in his session.
And I will say, Pat, there was a line that we saw today as well.
Brian Russ on the third line with Brent Kindle and Andre Kuzminko,
which that is interesting to me because, you know,
Brian Russ, he's been a mainstay on the top line.
We all know how much Sidney Crosby loves playing with him.
But it would give the Penguins options if they decide to look into this a little bit.
more where it gives Ben Kindle another scoring winger, someone who can play, you know, good minutes
in the offensive zone, he'll still score 20 plus goals a season, always a threat out there,
Kuzmenko, looking for a bounce back in Kindle, he's more of the playmaker, really good hockey
IQ, obviously a really strong two-way center, at least last year.
So it would have at least some potential, but only been a day or two at camp.
I want to see how this looks in a preseason game.
but let's just see if we even get in a preseason game.
But at least it's intriguing me a little bit.
Sorry, I just,
I completely tuned out after you said Rust was down on the third line
because I just wanted to interject with Dan Muse, Kyle Dubas.
Thank you very much for being dedicated listeners of the Locked-on Penguins podcast
because that sounded awful familiar, but I digress.
That is going to do it for our opening segment.
I will say to the person who came up to me today and said,
if I was early, you are correct. I got here 10 minutes early today because there wasn't as much
traffic. So there's your shout out. Thank you very much for asking me that. Because yes, I was 10 minutes
late yesterday. I blame the rush hour traffic. I guess today not nearly as bad. So I will take the pat on
the back there. Everybody on that Friday schedule. So you didn't hit as much rush hour traffic,
I suppose. But once again, that will do it for our opening segment. When we return is of Gennie
Malkins return going to be more than just this year? Who knows, but we got to talk about it,
and we will when we come back right after this. But first, we got a couple of sponsors to get to

We are back here on the Friday edition of the Locked on Penguins podcast.
I'm Patrick Damp. That's Hunter Hodes. And we might want to pump the brakes on the
Evgeny Malkin farewell tour because Gino might be coming back. He might not be. He doesn't know.
This could be it. It might not. Gino was pretty indecisive. I don't want to say indecisive,
but he was honest, I should say today. The biggest standout from his comments, which he made quite a few.
today. He spoke at length, I would say. And here's the one that stood out the most to me, Hunter.
He basically said, if I don't feel 100%, if I don't feel like I can give my all and be in top
shape, then I'm done. So it was a very honest assessment. And it was refreshing to hear that from an
athlete, the caliber of Afghani Malcon, because we know athletes in the mold of of Genie Malkin try to hold on
as long as they can.
Yeah, I think the biggest thing is that he's just not sure,
and he wants to see how his body feels.
Like the quote here from Josh Yoli from the Athletic,
you know, right now he goes,
I want to say yes to playing beyond this season,
but we will see how my body feels.
I still love the game.
It's why I've been here for 21 years.
I'm excited every shift, practice battles,
see guys around and have fun,
but most important is how your body feels.
And that's what it's going to come down to.
If, say, for example, his body breaks down,
this year, God forbid, of course, he's probably going to call it quits.
I still have been maintained, and I will continue to maintain, that I think it's likely
that this is his last year. I could be dead wrong on that, but I think that this is most likely
it for him. However, if he also goes out there and has another season like he had last year,
over a point per game, and he goes, hey, I think I want to do this one more year,
that contract discussion will probably take five minutes once again.
I know some people may roll their eyes when they hear that, oh, you can't keep doing this.
You're just delaying everything, yada, yada, yada.
Evgeny Malkin is not blocking anyone until they get their hands on a top generational type prospect once again or a franchise type guy.
That's going to be the case.
And respectfully, I don't really see that happening this year just because I expect them to stay in the race for the entire season unless something.
weird happens where everyone just falls off a cliff and then they get a top five pick but he's not
blocking anyone so that's kind of where i stand on that but overall i will still maintain my take
that i think this is it but you know he i don't if people were looking for like a full
declaration like oh yep this is it for me i'm done after this year i think you were always
going to be disappointed you know he kind of just said got to see how my boss
body feels. He doesn't know. And that's, that's the end of it, really.
Right. He didn't Aaron Rogers it where he came out and said, this is it. And you beat me to it.
The other factor to keep in mind here, because I know that inevitably, there are going to be people who shake
their heads at Evgeny Malkin potentially coming back after this season. If he still feels up to it,
and he still is producing at a point per game or around 0.75 points per game.
game. I'm fine with running it back.
That works for me. If you bring him back for a year contract at like that same similar
or cap it. If he's producing at that level still, which. And then the other side of it is exactly
what you said where until a bona fide number two center or top six winger. And I mean
bona fide, not a rental, not hey, we're just moving this player up the lineup because we have to.
If he isn't blocking anyone, I'm fine with him coming back.
especially if he is still producing.
So there's,
that's a lot of caveats to put on it,
but it's to the point right now where players like him,
players like,
I guess technically Chris LaTang,
even though a lot of people want to see Harrison Brunick,
but Harrison Brunick still a little rough around the edges,
still has to develop.
And then your Crosby's, your Carlson's,
Rust and Raquel's,
they aren't blocking anyone.
It's not, and I know people will say,
oh, there's this big glut of forwards
who aren't going to make the team,
and going to have to get waived.
We might lose them for nothing,
but you go through those names right now.
They're not top six forwards.
They might be one day,
but they aren't yet.
So we're still waiting on that.
So at the end of the day,
I'm refreshed with those comments.
And the other thing about it,
and this is the,
I think the last thing we can touch on,
before we get to fan take Friday.
The team wanted him back,
and I don't mean just the front office.
You talk to players like Brian Rust,
Igor Chinikov,
who is going to be really nice for him
to have that familiarity for a full season.
And of course, your leader in Sydney Crosby,
they all love this guy.
They love playing with him.
They love what he brings to the table.
And if he keeps bringing it,
why not keep him?
Right. That's the main thing there, too.
If he keeps being at a point per game, even if it's like a little bit lower,
there's no reason to not bring him back.
But it's all going to come down to how he feels.
He even said, if I'm not at 100%, I'm not coming back.
I got to see how my body feels.
So I still think this is probably it.
I'm not going to put like a huge wager on it, though.
I don't need to go to Fandul.
put my odds down for that we just let's see how the season goes yeah but i'm excited to see what he
can do this year and i will give him this he basically also said that he's still motivated yeah
this isn't a farewell tour it's he wants to win yeah he said that today it's not one last lap around
the track it's him saying i still feel good i still want to play i still want to win and
i'm not going to go through my whole rant about culture and tanking and all that for the million
the time, but it's good to have when you're trying to develop young players.
That'll do it, though, for this middle segment when we return.
It's my favorite day of the week.
It's Fan Take Friday.
We got answers to our poll.
We'll go over that.
We'll go over your comments.
We'll have a little discussion ourselves.
So stick with us.
We're going to do that when we come back right after this.
The easiest dinner isn't always the one that comes through a drive-through.
Sometimes it's knowing you've already got incredible protein sitting in.
your freezer. That's exactly why Budgerbox has become part of my routine. Butcherbox delivers 100%
grass-fed beef, organic chicken, wild-hot seafood, and more. All source the standards they can
actually tell you about. They've already done the research and made the tough sourcing decisions.
So all you have to do is decide what's for dinner. And for me, it's super easy. All to this place
in order, get the protein when it's on my front porch, got to put in the freezer. And then like this
Alaskan cod, just pull it out and I'm making it. And I got great meals already ready to go. And it's
super easy. If you're looking for an easier way to get great meals on the table, give Butcherbox
a try. Go to butcherbox.com slash Lockdown-Dain-Shall to get $20 off your first box,
plus your choice of free whereby, New York strip, or Flamingon in every box for a year with free shipping

finishing up the Friday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast. I'm Patrick Damp.
That's Hunter Hodes. And it's another fan take Friday. And on this fan take Friday, if you saw it on our YouTube, which plenty of you did, we put out a poll.
Are the Penguins going back to the Stanley Cup playoffs in 27? And Hunter, this one was a barn burner.
54% say they are going back.
46% say sorry they're going to miss.
And before we get to the playoff discussion,
there is a fan take Friday comment that I want to get to
that I do think is an underrated possibility coming out of this camp.
And this comes from Austin Fernsler.
He says,
The Penguins will lose a young player to a trade request due to crowd.
competition in the early part of the season.
I do think it's a possibility, but what I do think might be more of a possibility
is a guy like Justin Brzoe asking out if he doesn't end up getting a spot because there
will be suitors for his services because he's a solid player.
He can move up and down your lineup.
He has talent.
He is big.
and I think they could get nothing major,
but they could definitely get something for them.
A pick or a prospect somewhere along those range.
You're not going to get both, I don't think,
but I think you're going to get one of those two in return.
If you do try to move Justin Roseau before the season or during the season,
as for a younger player,
I understand where Austin is coming from.
I guess I would just ask,
which one do you think would?
Like, would it be a Ville-Coyvenin?
I don't think so because he'd just sign an eight-year contract.
would it be a Rucker McGuarty?
We've kind of already been down that road with him with his former team where wasn't happy
there, basically requested out, comes here to Pittsburgh.
I don't think so, but you never truly know.
Avery Hayes, you know, he just had five goals in 16 games last season.
And yeah, I know, a very small sample, but I don't think he'd be ready to request out
just yet.
You know, Philip Hollander is not really super young at this.
Juncture, and you just traded for Hendricks LaPierre, who, yeah, is young, but he's not going to request out after you just traded for him three months ago.
So I guess that's the question I would ask back is which one?
So of those, again, even though I don't think it's likely, the best chance in quotation marks is probably Rucker McGority.
But even then, I still think even if he doesn't make it, I think he has to know he's going to come up multiple times this year because we all know the penguins are going to be banged up at some point during the season.
So I think he would stick through it.
But I understand at least where Austin is coming from with that one.
What else you got?
Let's get into a little bit of the playoff discussion.
And we can kind of go through a few of the highlighted comments because there are a couple that are just honest yes or knows.
So we'll go with some of the ones that do have comments and explanations.
Let's start with John Gorman who says, hope I'm wrong.
but I feel like this could be a step back year.
A lot of it will depend upon the goaltending,
especially Murshov,
and if the blue line plays decent,
I also think a lot of the teams in the Metro got better this off season.
See, that's this, I don't want to hedge, right?
I don't want to do the set myself up to be right,
no matter what happens.
But I do think this year is more of a wild card than last year.
And I don't mean that in where they're going to finish in the standings.
I mean that as in there are so many other factors at play this year than were last year
because you have more bets on your roster.
You have a couple of the blue line with guys like Caden Corsack.
You have Kuzmenko, who could he be your next Anthony Mantha?
Maybe he could also go bust.
You've got Shilov and Murashav who when you look at the.
to Sheelovs is kind of inconsistent in the regular season.
Murshov's an unknown.
Do the big guns, Crosby, Malkin, Rust, Raquel, Carlson, et cetera, et cetera,
do they keep fighting back father time or do they take a step back?
So this really does feel like a year where you would convince me of just about any outcome.
You could convince me they miss the playoffs.
You could convince me they fight for a division title.
you could tell me they make the playoffs and win around.
You could tell me they miss completely.
And all of them, I would kind of just go, yeah, I could see it.
Maybe not the division title, because I think that's Carolinas to lose.
And I think they're going to win the Metro by quite a bit this year.
Washington's going to be, I think, their biggest competition for that.
I think those are their two best teams.
I understand what some fans are saying when it comes to the Metro getting better.
The Rangers, for example, they got better, but how much?
better did they get? Their blue line is definitely
improved, but I still don't like their forward group
that much. I understand that E. Gorsha Sturkin
is still E. Gorses-Dirkin, but
I think their ceiling is maybe a seventh
or eighth seed, and then they get bounced.
But hey, penguins,
they could be competing for them for a playoff spot, but I still
don't think the Rangers are
that good. They're definitely better than they were last
year, but I still don't think they are that good.
The Islanders, to me, kind of just
stayed where they are. They're just in a weird
situation, too. Columbus had a lot
of drama this offseason, and
I think they're kind of just
are where they are as well.
Philadelphia, I don't think they've majorly improved.
I think they're definitely going to be fighting for a playoff spot once again,
but I don't know how much truly better they got this off season,
but they'll still be in the mix, of course.
New Jersey, if they're healthy,
and after the moves they made, they're going to be in contention for a playoff
spot.
So I will say, definitely some of the teams got better,
but I also do think some of the teams kind of just stayed the same
slash got a little worse.
I think, again, the teams,
be really competing for that third spot.
Philadelphia, New Jersey, and the Rangers and the Penguins.
I'm not a big believer in the Blue Jackets and the Islanders this year.
It's not big on them.
I say that now, and of course they'll probably be fighting for a playoff spot during the season.
But those teams that I mentioned before those two, I think those are going to be like
the Penguins' main competition this season for that third spot in the metro.
Yeah, that's where I am as well.
I think if I have to go ten toes down,
and really kind of say what I think,
where they're going to be and what it's going to mean for the postseason.
It's the same take I've had overall is that I think they're going to be in the mix all season long,
but I would agree with your point of those are pretty much the teams that they're going to battle with in the metro to get in.
Let's keep it moving here with another comment from Victor's Channel.
Victor's Channel says, I honestly don't think so, making the playoffs, that is.
Dubus and Company won't make the mistake of keeping the players this deadline.
He will trade them and we'll end up with another first and a couple seconds and or prospects,
young ready players.
This will help with gaining a high draft pick next year, say somewhere between the fourth and seventh pick.
I get the strategy and I know what Victor's Channel's going for here,
that they will flip some things to give themselves a better swing at the draft next summer to move up.
But do keep in mind that Hunter and I have talked about this before.
Always remember the one week test.
If they get to the deadline and they're one good week at getting back into the postseason,
I could see Dubus moving some pieces out to bring in some more capital,
but he won't sell because you don't want to hurt your locker room that way.
but if they're five or more points out with a week to go to the deadline,
those guys are getting moved.
Yeah, 100%.
So I get the strategy.
Yeah, it's the same kind of topic we discussed yesterday
when we were discussing Eric Carlson in his situation as we approach the trade deadline
this year and his contract situation and all of that.
I think for all this, it just depends on where they are in the standings.
If they are in a playoff spot slash comfortable in a playoff spot,
I don't think you're moving a lot of those rentals.
I think you are keeping them as your own rentals on one of your contracts,
and you're looking for ways to improve your team,
especially trying to get younger players,
because they're still very much trying to do that via the trade market.
But if you're out of it, as you said, and as we talked about yesterday,
they will look to move on from these players and look to cash in when they can.
That's why you sign something like Andre Kuzmenko.
So if your season does go to crap and you're out of it by the deadline,
you can flip him and a few other players that you signed as well.
We do have some very positive comments, of course, from Scott.
We have Sid, that's why I love it.
G. Tots wants Penn's Flyers round two.
I love that as well.
Brandon wants Penns versus Caps round one.
Inject that into my veins too.
James just believes, hey, so we definitely have a lot of positive comments on here.
It's a nice little mix, and that's kind of what the poll indicated as well.
It was close to a 50-50 split, which I do appreciate.
Which is just the people speak.
for my brain because I really am so 50-50 on this.
I genuinely echo what I said at the start of fan take and that's you really could
convince me this year of just about any outcome short of them winning the cup that they're
going to do whatever they're going to do because maybe all the bets work out.
Maybe some of them do.
Maybe none of them do.
But that's the fun.
And guess what?
we're going to get our first look at it on Monday because the preseason officially begins on Monday
night, which means Hunter and I will be back with a brand new episode on Monday morning
previewing the first preseason game and going over any news that may happen over the weekend.
So again, make sure you're following us on social media.
And just real quick about I will say we got one from our Instagram account from Frank.
he says he was at camp today so love that you were there frank he said he liked the lines and also said
that he loved how nick robertson looked today with his shot did also say that he felt
justin briszo looked a step slow and how he didn't seem to fit any of the other line combinations
i will say about brzzo he was skating a lot today on the quote unquote fourth line in his group
but i think he's been fine so far he just hasn't stood out like some of these others yet now
time will tell because frank thinks he's out we'll see
see, it's going to be a fun competition, but didn't mean end up to there, but wanted to get
that one.
Just Brazil just hasn't popped yet.
And if he does, that'll be a good thing.
If not, might tell us where he ends up.
But that's going to do it this time for the Friday edition of Locked-on Penguins.
Hunter and I will be back one more time with that brand new episode for you on Monday.
So for now, for Hunter Hodes, I am Patrick Damp.
Thank you for tuning in.
And we'll be back on Monday.
day.
