Kalshi trade what's next.
On today's show, the Penguins preseason keeps rolling tonight when the Detroit Red Wings come to town for preseason game number two.
We'll make sure you're all set for that.
But first, we've got to recap the first of the back-to-back preseason games.
And while I got up this morning and even a little bit after the game last night and wrote my script for today's show, I had this whole idea of what I wanted to do, how I wanted to do it.
But now with injuries and other news, it's going to be a little bit jumbled.
So stick with us on that.
So let's start here.
The Penguins get a 4-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres.
Brian Rust very much led the way with a goal and two assists.
Connor Dewar, Avery Hayes, Elmer Soderblom, all get on.
on the board. But Hunter, we got to start with some injuries. Obviously, we had Ben Kindle,
who went down with a lower body injury. He blocked a shot with his foot. Looks like he was going
to return, but then didn't. Then you had Justin Brzo, who now is being classified as day to day,
along with Ben Kindle. He took a nasty spill after a sneakily dirty play from one of the Sabres.
and now Velae Coivanin is day to day with an upper body injury.
So welcome back hockey.
The Penguins have a bunch of injuries.
Yeah, and Ville Coivinen taking a puck to the face basically during a scrimmage,
had to leave the ice.
And now he's day to day.
He was expected to play today.
He was in the lineup for today's game against the Red Wings.
And then the Penguins announced this morning that he is day to day and he has been replaced.
So Ville Coivinen, not playing.
Ben Kendall, at least he is day to day.
I still felt last night he was.
more precautionary for him. There is just no reason to even bring him back at all in a meaningless
preseason game. But the fact that he is day to day, at least so far, is good news. I say this now
until, God forbid, it turns into week to week or something like that. But at least right now,
it seems like it is good news with the season about a week away. Justin Brzeau. He came back for a
little bit after taking that nasty spill. And I agree with you bad. That was a sneaky, dirty hit.
I don't like that play. Owen Pickering also took a beating last night, too. And I was texting
you that that was at least interference along the boards and I didn't like that hit either I just
thought it was a little sneaky dirty there too I think like either of those two hits I texted
back to you I said for the two scenarios the pickering and then the brazo injuries or at least
stoppages I think with the pickering incident that was just a mass of bodies and he just kind
of got caught up in it along with everybody else and just kind of took the worst of it I don't
think it was intentionally dirty. I think it was just a scrum and he unfortunately was on the
receiving end of a bad part of it. Brezzo, that was a real. I had it in my notes and I lost it,
but the defenseman on the Sabres, that's just, that's a sneaky dirty play. I understand you're
in a foot race. Brzo beats out the icing. You got to kind of put a body on the guy so he doesn't
get an immediate walk right to the net. But where he put his stick right at his feet, that's
That's a sneaky dirty play.
That can end up.
Luckily, for now, we have him as day to day.
We don't know the full extent.
But the fact that he was able to come back tells me it's not overly severe.
But that's the kind of situation and kind of injury that can end up very catastrophic if it goes the wrong way.
And especially for someone who's trying to make the team.
Like he's in a big battle for one of those last forward spots, even with Blake Lazott,
now week to week with an injury that he suffered during training.
in camp pat he's really trying to make this team and i felt even before the injury his night was a bit
quiet compared to some of the others who had better night so we'll see if he gets into some of the
other action here he's obviously not playing tonight but we'll see if he gets into the other two games
at least one of them later on this week because he's in a really big fight right now he is so
this is really unfortunate for him let's kind of flip this over now we got plenty more to talk about
from this game. You would think a 4-1 first preseason game, there wouldn't be a ton to get into,
but there's plenty from this game. There was a lot of standouts. There were some not-so-good stand-outs,
you name it. I'm going to say this much. Brian Rust, thank you for your service. Glad to see
you still work hard. Glad to see you're still good. Take a seat for the rest of the preseason.
Now with all these injuries, we get it. You're a competitor. We get it. You want to get that experience.
You want to get that time on ice. But we need you for the 84 game season.
And man, we don't need you to prove it against the sabers and blue jackets and red wings anymore.
You're good.
Yeah, best player on the ice last night.
After, especially after Ben Kindle got her.
I thought Kendall was the best player on the ice until he got hurt.
Brian Russ was right behind him.
And then once Kendall went out, it was the Brian Rush show the rest of the game.
By far the best player on the ice right after that.
The way that he went one on four in the offensive zone pad, just knifing around all of these dudes.
and then just dishing it out to Connor Dewar.
Just beautiful.
And you're right.
Take a seat, man.
We don't need him hurt.
There's just no reason for it.
Now, will he potentially play on Saturday for the dress rehearsal?
Yes, because I'm assuming that's what it's going to be.
We are getting Crosby and Malkin a couple of other regulars tonight,
though no Eric Carlson, which I find interesting.
He might only play in one preseason game, excuse me, this year.
But yeah, put someone like that in bubble wrap,
because I think we saw what we needed to see.
Pat, I think he's going to make the team.
Yeah, pretty a chance.
I think he's got a good shot at making this club.
The other thing, and I don't want to take away from what was a spectacular effort by Rust,
but I know the Sabres weren't exactly playing their A team or even really their B team.
That was a lot of guys who are either going to be in Rochester this year
or doing something else with their time come fall.
but that was just a spectacularly awful defensive effort on on doer's goal because
they all fixated right on brian rust completely lost everybody else on the ice which led
doer to just walk right into the most dangerous place on the ice basically unchecked
and then Alex lion man that that was not a good goal to give up so not to take anything away
from Dewey and Rust.
But man, that felt a lot more like the Sabres gifted them that one than the penguins
earned it.
But they never ask how.
They just ask how many.
But let's kind of shift the conversation here.
And let's finish up the first segment with another positive.
I do think that both goalies had themselves a pretty solid night.
Murashov stops 13 to 13.
Blumquist stops 10 of 11.
And the one he gives up.
I can't give him too much grief.
It's on a penalty kill.
And the thing I liked about it, and I will give Blumquist this.
He said after the game, he wanted that one back, and I appreciate that competitor's spirit.
But on the other side of liking that competitive spirit, he tried to beat the screen and did just miss it.
It wasn't as if he completely read it wrong.
It wasn't as if he was out of position or completely misread a play.
he got to where he needed to go.
He tried to look through the screen
and just missed it.
That is going to happen at every level,
HL, NHL, NHL, ECHL,
but overall, this battle
between Blumquist and Murashav,
it's still going.
Yeah, I thought in the first period,
Murashov wasn't tested too, too much,
but he still made the say he needed to make.
The second period in the first time minutes
was like a full-on onslaught for the first half of that period.
Buffalo was coming at the Penguins in waves,
and I felt Marashav did a really nice job,
you know, staying comfortable,
being cool, calm, and collected in the crease,
showcases really nice agility,
made some really nice saves in that second period.
So all in all,
exactly what you want to see in the first half.
Bumquist, he also made some really nice saves
after showed some really nice movement in the crease as well.
The first goal that he allowed, yeah, no chance on it.
That was a laser.
Like, he's not going to stop that.
I don't think Sturgey Mirashov is probably stopping that either.
So I'm not going to hold that one against him.
I thought both goalies overall played a really strong game last night.
It's exactly what you want to see is these two guys are really jockeying for a spot.
And one more thing on Connor Dewar, you know, I've seen some people ask me,
like, who do you think Connor Dewar could get traded with this roster battle
and trying to get younger?
No, I don't see that.
I think he is a roster lock.
He scored last night.
He had a career best season last year.
They're not moving off that player.
I would be stunned if that happened.
I truly would be.
I think again, he is the straw that serves the drink on the fourth line.
Don't think they have any interest in moving him before the season,
even if some of these other younger players are making pushes.
And we're going to talk about that coming up pretty soon because there were some other really big positives last night.
It would really need to be a stupid offer for Connor Dewar for them to move him.
It would have to be a godfather offering you can't refuse level because they like him a lot.
He had a career year.
And he gives you stability.
He gives you some office.
offense and he's just a good presence to have in the bottom six. So I don't think he is a guy that
would be moved unless a team just offers you an insane amount for him, which I don't see happening.
But we got plenty more, as Hunter said, to discuss from last night's preseason opener. So stick with
us. We're going to get to a lot more of that when we come back right after this. But first,
we got to get to our first sponsor, and that is our pals at Odu. Running a business shouldn't feel like
you're trying to connect a bunch of systems that were never designed to work together.
One app for accounting, another for inventory, another for sales, and somehow none of them
talk to each other. That is where Odu comes in. Odu is an all-in-one business management software
that brings every part of your business together in one powerful platform. From sales and accounting
to inventory and marketing, everything works in one place. Odo is one platform to manage, grow,
and scale your businesses.
The best organizations know that success,
it's not just about talent.
It's about having everyone working toward the same goal.
And that's true in sports,
just as it is in business.
As training camp continues,
you can tell that the Pittsburgh Penguins have one goal in mind,
and that is returning to the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Between some of the off-season acquisitions,
the young guns battling for a spot,
it's clear they want to compete,
and that is a coordinated effort across
the entire organization.
Great organizations win because operations matter, and that is why you should be using O-DU.
It's one platform to manage, grow, and scale your business, and you can try for free today
at O-D-O-com slash Locked-On.
That's O-D-O-O-O-O-com slash Locked-on.
We're continuing the Tuesday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast.
I'm Patrick Damp.
As always with me is Hunter Hodeys.
We're recapping the preseason opener, a 4-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres, though.
Who really cares about wins and losses in the preseason?
It's about performances.
And I know we spent a bit there to start the show on the injuries.
So obviously this little bit here is both a call to hope that Ben Kindle's okay
and also an evaluation because the hype train behind Rust, Kindle, Kuzmenko,
through practices has been moving at lightning speed.
We're excited about it.
It looks like it's going to work.
And I will say through the first period, that line clicked.
Well, Pat, it's funny you say that because I got some numbers here for you.
Do you want to hear them?
Because I'm just going to give them to you anyway.
So in period one, this is pro natural stat trick.
The Kendall Kuzmanko Rust line had 85.7% of the shot attempts,
100% of the scoring chances in 93.7% of,
the expected goal share. And yes, I understand
Buffalo was not really playing any
of the regulars last night outside of
one to two. But
it was still a nice step in the right direction
after how comfortable they all look together
during three straight training camp practices.
And I even tweeted, I was excited to see what those numbers were going to
look like by the end of the game. And then of course,
I janked it because Ben Kendall got hurt, took a
felt like he took a puck off of the skate, like the foot- ankle area,
and then try to test it as he was
coming back out, said, you know what, not going to do it.
He's now day to day, of course, with an injury.
So I will say, though, man, they were buzzing on the ice.
Kindle, Rust and Guzmanco were finding each other at will in the offensive zone.
The amount of times they delivered a great centering pass where the puck was just not going in the net,
was too many to count.
It felt like in the first period, they were everywhere.
I mean, right off the rip, right off the rip,
Kuzmanko and Kendall get a two-on-one.
And if it wasn't for a desperation defensive play,
Kindle taps in an easy one right off the bat.
And that just, to your point, yeah,
the Sabres didn't really play any of their regulars
or anybody that they really expect to be part of the consistent NHL squad.
But that line of two NHL veterans and an NHL sophomore,
one of Ben Kindle's caliber, especially,
that's what they should do in that.
game. They should be beating everybody up and they did for the first period.
So we got to hope that Kindle is okay and this is just mostly precautionary and that we
will get him back for the regular season. Now, here's a couple things that I do want to say
were maybe negative. What did I say yesterday? I wasn't telling people to buy tickets for
the Ryan Graves redemption.
and it looks like that tour is not getting started.
Now, I'm not surprised because all of the evidence has been there that he's pretty much cooked.
But to my point of what I said yesterday, I just wanted him to look like a viable option.
And he started the game rough.
It was a rough first period.
And he sort of leveled out in the second and third.
but at the end of the day,
it looks like it is going to be another season
in the HL for Ryan Graves.
He was not good last night.
Dare I say, Pat, he was probably the Penguins' least effective player last night,
which doesn't really surprise me.
He has been like that since he signed that contract,
literally in the first game that he played.
Just because of injuries in how this team is,
I assume he might get some games with the team this year.
And by some, I mean like a few.
you but is he going to be an every night regular no and we saw once again that he's just not very
good anymore going back to some positives though i thought owen pickering looked night and day better
compared to what we saw last year and then the year before remember he played really well in the
a hl playoffs he was also banged up during that time by the way it still played well now fully
healthy took that big hit along the boards which i felt was interference and a little bit of a low-key
dirty play got up,
play the rest of the game. I thought his
defensive awareness was really good. He was just making
really smart decisions in his
own zone, really good at breaking the puck out.
It felt like a really nice fit with Harrison Brunick, who I also
felt played a pretty good game, but I thought Owen Pickering
just really stood out. And then
death taxes and Avery Hayes
scoring against the Buffalo Sabres. He loves to score
against the savers and Pat. What a goal that was.
Wins a battle below the net.
Comes out with the puck.
and fires it in the one place where there is a smidge of room.
And that was a laser, man.
Great game from Avery Hayes.
It's exactly what you want to see from someone like him who was also battling for a roster spot.
And one more for you.
Philip Hollander, he was everywhere in the offensive zone, getting his own chances,
setting up chances for his linemates.
He is on a mission right now to make this team.
And with a couple of injuries now, especially with Blake LaZott week to week.
and we talked about that forward spot also wide open.
Pat, there's a spot for Philip Hollander to make this team.
I had some, I had a listener DM me last night during the game asking how Hollander was looking.
And this, this evaluation is going to sound dismissive.
And I promise you it isn't.
But when you talk about the type of role and the type of player that Hollander is,
the way I described it was he's not standing out in a tremendous way,
but he's fast.
He's involved in the play.
He is making things happen.
Just because I know we say this all the time, you don't want to overinflate expectation.
You don't want to oversell things.
He did have a great game relative to the role he is trying to carve out.
I thought he was physical.
He was fast.
He is a motivated player who looks like he wants to put last season and everything he had to go through in the rearview mirror.
The other thing I want to add on.
on to you. And it's something we can put another stamp in the Pat Damp Locked on Penguin's
cliche book is that Brunick in Pickering. You know what the best thing about them last night was?
I barely noticed them. And in the role that they were playing, I don't need to notice them. They were
the third pair D. They were basically there to shut down some of the top skaters on that
Buffalo roster.
And when they were on the ice, they were positionally sound.
They were physical when they needed to be.
They didn't make many, if any, mistakes.
And for two guys who are going to be taking on the lion's share of the top minutes in
the HL this year, being able to do what they did last night in an NHL preseason game
gives me a lot of hope that when they take on the big role down in the A to start
the year, they're going to be pretty damn.
good. Yeah, I agree. And it is probably the most likely scenario that they start down in the A,
just because of when you look at the D, Carlisle with Carlson. And yes, Carlson is not playing tonight.
I would have liked to see him with Carlisle in game action, but we might get that later on this week.
That looks like right now going to be the top pair, TVR and Letang, and I felt they were pretty good
last night too, and then Korzak and Gerard, and both of them are playing tonight as well.
So, you have Ilyos Solov. It looks like he's playing with Carlisle tonight more on that a little bit
later, but unless something else happens, it looks like that's going to be your top pair,
and they will play a whole bunch of minutes in Wilkesbury.
And I do expect both of them to get NHL time this year, by the way.
I don't think they're going to be down there for, you know, the full season.
I think just because injuries and they can probably reward them for their play, I do think
you will see both of them up with the NHL team at some point this season, and they'll get a handful
of games.
So those are my main thoughts on that pairing.
Did you have a thought on Avery Hayes before we get out of here?
I mean, just remarkably consistent at what he's supposed to do.
He is a bottom, and again, this is all complimentary.
He is a bottom six player.
And you know what he did?
He scored a hell of a bottom six goal where, like you said,
wins the battle.
Even what, it could have been real easy for him to just pack it up
because there was less than 10 seconds to go in the period.
It would have been real easy for him to just say,
ah, you know what, we're getting to the intermission.
I'm good here.
But nope, he is full go, full, full.
time full tilt and he scores a beautiful, beautiful goal.
So as our pal Joshio, he said in his write-up on the athletic, I would take an Avery
Hayes on my team eight days a week.
But that'll do it for the recap of preseason game number one.
Don't rest just yet.
We got preseason game number two tonight against the Detroit Red Wings.
They come to PPG Paints Arena.
Plenty of lineup news as we have talked about.
and there's even more lineup news, and we'll get into that when we come back right after this.
But first, we got one more sponsor to get to, and that is Kalshi.
The puck is about to drop on a new NHL season.
Who makes the playoffs? Who wins their division?
And who has what it takes to win the Stanley Cup?
On Kalshi, America's number one prediction platform, market platform, excuse me,
you can trade those predictions in a live market.
For the NHL, it seems that the Florida Panthers are still considered one of the best in the east,
If you want to trade on the Panthers winning the Eastern Conference, they're trading at 20%,
meaning a $100 trade pays out $437 and 45 cents should they win the conference.
On Cal She, you're trading against peers in a live market, meaning there's no house.
And as the probability changes, you can buy in and out of your position.
Download the Cal She app and use code locked on to get $25 when you trade $25.

involves risk and may not be suitable for all investors. Cali products are not available in all
jurisdictions. Prices, values, and available markets may differ from those mentioned. For more
information, see calshy.com slash regulatory. We're closing out the Tuesday edition of the
Locked-on Penguins podcast, Patrick Damp and Hunter Hodes, to make sure you're ready
for this whirlwind of a preseason.
And the Detroit Red Wings are coming to town tonight.
We've got our lines and our lineup for this game.
The biggest news about this lineup tonight is in goal will be Arter Shilovs.
And it will be Arter Shilovs for the full game.
So I have to imagine Hunter that this might be the only full action.
Artur Sheelab sees this preseason.
They'll play him in this game.
Maybe they play him in the finale.
But this looks like it is going to be the Blumquist-Muryshov battle the rest of the way out.
Yeah, I think he might play on Saturday in the dress rehearsal if that is indeed the dress rehearsal game.
Otherwise, I'm good here because it goes to show that he is the 1A.
And we all expected this.
I mean, his regular season, yes, it was up and down.
played really well in the playoffs. They were always going to have him be the one a goaltender
going to the year. And I'm excited to see what he can do in this game. Like Monday's lineup,
it's a nice mix of the veterans who we know are going to make the team versus some young
players who are also on the up-and-coming. And even though there's some that we know are probably
not going to make it, it's going to be cool to see them in-game action with the Penguins. And what do I
mean by that? So obviously the top six, Robertson, with Crosby and Raquel, that looks likely to be,
the top line on opening night next Wednesday.
Chinakov Novak Malkin, same thing for the second line.
It's the bottom six, which really intrigues me.
Rucker McGority with Bill Zonan and Atley Calvert.
I like that Zonanin is sticking at center,
and I'm really excited to see Zon and a Magrorty together
because that could be a preview of what we could expect,
at least for a time this year in Wilkesbury,
depending on how long Magrory is down there.
You and I both expect Bill Zonan to get basically the full season
in Wilkesbury, which is the next step of his development.
he's had a solid camp, but I still expect him to get most of the season in Wilkesbury.
excited to see what he can do in this game.
Atle Calvert is someone who I don't think gets enough love from people as well.
He's really done a good job building his way up.
So I'm excited to see what he can do.
And then of course.
Hunter, Hunter, I got to stop you here because, you know what?
We have wasted way too much time.
And we have got to tell people on the fourth line tonight in PPG Paints Arena,
center Marcus Ruck is with Wingers, Liam Ruck, and Mikhail Ile. I know that you were looking at me like, oh my God, what did I screw up now? You didn't screw anything up. I just really wanted to get to that. I know that we both know that the Ruck Twins. They are not making this roster. They're not making the Wilkes Bear roster. They're not making the Florida Everblades roster. They are going back to juniors. But this. This.
is something you and I have discussed plenty. With players like the Ruck Twins and other prospects,
this is what you should do with them. You give them a taste. You give them that little bit.
You play them in a game or two in the preseason. You'd let them hang around training camp for a week
or two, even though that training camp is basically just a week now. But you let them hang around
for a bit. You give them that taste. You give them that viewing. Then they go back to juniors and think,
okay, I know what I got to do now.
Yep, I'm stoked for them.
I'm really excited to see what they can do.
Even in a fourth line role, they're playing together.
Give me that Liam Ruck release tonight, man.
I want a goal, if we can get one from him, that'd be so sick.
And assisted from Marcus, just with that plate making ability that he has.
I only ask for so little, Pat.
So just give us a goal, one assist by Marcus Ruck,
and then the goal scored by Liam Ruck.
Come on.
let's just have some fun.
McKell Leyen, excited for him too.
Then defensively, Gerard and Korzak, no surprise there.
Carlis and Solovian, and then Tommy Galvis is going to get in tonight.
He was in the roster for last night's game, did not play,
but he is going to play tonight with Finn Harding.
Harding is a player I expect to start in Wilkesbury this year.
So, yeah, again, Pat, like Monday,
you've got your veterans who we know are going to make the team,
and we got some younger players who may not be there just yet,
like the Rock Twins, for example,
bills on in Atlee Calvert,
but I'm excited to see what they can do.
And of course,
Rucker McGority as well,
I had a really final good day of camp on Saturday.
How does that translate over in games?
Excited to see how he does.
And I should say,
we forgot about General Sherman
in the second segment with the MD net goal.
He was just begging for the MT net goal last night.
So very excited that the Shermanator gets one man.
Yeah, he was good last night.
I thought he had a solid game overall.
empty net goal notwithstanding but it was a good night for him as for tonight a couple quick
thoughts before we close this one out i need to see how good this robertson crosbie rquel line is in
game action i tried looking up detroit's lineup for tonight granted i didn't put a ton of effort
into it couldn't really find it so hunter if you find it give me a quick recap on if it's
prospects or regulars but either way i want to see that line really kind of do what we
said the Rust Kindle line did last night, where I want them to come out, play really well,
show that they're working. We obviously know what Novak, Chinikov, and Malkin can do together.
We saw it for a large portion of last season. And then like you said, that third line,
McGorreys-on and Calvert, those are three guys with designs, whether it's in the immediate
or in the medium term with playing in the NHL. Be nice for them to have a solid game. And then
And for the rest of it, Gerard and Corsac and then Carlisle, I'm curious to see what those guys do in some limited game action here because it is also a battle on the blue line.
We say that everything is pretty much decided, but we know that can be turned on its head right away if guys have a solid performance.
So Hunter, unless you have found Detroit's.
I have a couple of their power play units.
It looks like John Gibson is playing two of the periods tonight, at least by some of the beat reporters.
uh,
Casper is going to play tonight.
That's going to be fun.
Victor Arvinson looks like is playing tonight.
Nate Danielson, I think, is playing tonight, too.
That's a fun player that I like watching.
So they got some of their young players,
it looks like in,
and then again,
it does look like that John Gibson is going to play the first two periods,
and then one of their other goalies is going to play the third.
So they do have some of their regulars.
So did want to add that.
And that was an extra reminder also for me that Victor Arvinson
does indeed play for the Detroit Red Wing.
So nice to get back in.
the swing of things for the start of the season. So yeah, they're going to play some of the regulars
tonight. Kind of similar to the Penguins. They're going to kind of have regulars, prospects,
and fringe guys playing. So it should be an entertaining one tonight. Seven o'clock, once again
from PPG Paints Arena. If you are in the Pittsburgh area, it will be on SportsNet, Pittsburgh.
If you are not, you can find it on ESPN Plus or on the Penguins app for Hunter's Doppleganger,
Joe Brand will be calling the radio side of it.
But that will do it for the Tuesday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast.
Hunter and I are going to record our Wednesday episode after the preseason game this evening.
That will be in your feeds early on Wednesday morning since Wednesday is an off day for the Penguins.
We will get that episode to you bright and early on Wednesday morning.
Then we will be back with more on Thursday and Friday.
but for now, for Hunter Hodes, I am Patrick Damp.
