Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children of all ages, it is Hunter Hode's favorite weekend of the year, the 2026 NHL draft.
With just a few hours to go before the first round, we're going to get you set for what we think the penguins might do and everything else in between on today's locked on penguins.
You're locked on penguins, your daily podcast on the Pittsburgh Penguins, part of the locked on podcast network, your team, every day.
day. Welcome into the Friday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast. I am one of your hosts, Patrick
Damp, joined as always by the one and only Hunter Hodes. You can find me on most social media
platforms at synonym for what. You can find Hunter on Twitter at Hunter Hodes and a happy NHL draft
weekend to one and all. Like I said in the intro, today is going to be a very NHL draft
heavy episode. We'll talk about who we think they should pick, who they might pick, what the team
needs overall, if they're going to move up, all that good stuff. Before we do any of that, though,
let's make sure, for those who may not be, they are caught up on where the penguins stand
just a few hours before the first round. Tonight, the penguins, as we record, they have just one
pick in the first round, 22nd overall. Of course, we know sports and news move at the speed of light
at this day and age. So as we are recording right now around 3 o'clock on Friday afternoon,
they're 22nd overall. So don't yell at us if they move up after this episode comes out. But
that's where they stand for tonight. From there on Saturday, they currently own four more
picks to in the second round, 39th and 54th overall.
in the third round, 86th overall, and then one in the sixth round, 170th overall.
I will say this, Hunter, barring any moves, any trades, whatever Kyle Dubus has up his sleeve,
with all the hand-wringing about what they need to do this off-season, what they've got to bring in,
who they got to pick, all that jazz.
It is a nice little piece of business having four picks in the top 100.
of the draft. I agree. Would I like to have more, Pat, absolutely, especially in the middle rounds,
but they have a lot more picks coming next year and then the year after. I still think there's an
opportunity for them to maybe add a pick or two if they maybe want to ship out a player or two
either tonight or tomorrow. I mean, remember last year, Pat, they got the Conner Clifton
trade. They added that pick when getting Conner Clifton in the Conor Timon's deal. So maybe you see
something like that over the next couple of days.
So that would be nice, but I'm curious to see last year, a lot of it was quantity.
They had 13 picks and they chose quantity over quality.
And that was fine.
I think that was the right draft to do it.
This year, you've seen a lot of the rumors about them wanting to move up.
They're trying to prioritize more quality.
I feel like that's why you're seeing the rumors of Hugo Bjork in the top 10.
It's going to be hard to trade into that top 10, though, just with their assets.
You're seeing rumors about Ryan Lerke.
in why it's easier to move into the teens.
We'll touch on that in a few seconds because there's a team that I think could be
interested in maybe moving down a few slots because they have a lot of first round
picks in the top 20.
But I feel like that's where they're trending, more quality.
But of course, Pat, as you and I talked about, at the end of the day, it's BPA.
That's what you got to do if you do stay, especially at 22 with where this draft is.
Yeah, the hardest thing that is going to be in.
front of Kyle Dubus, especially over the next few hours, is moving up because you look at a lot of
teams, especially in the top 10. I don't see the Maple Leafs trading out of the first overall
pick. They are going to take Gavin McKenna. That is pretty much set in stone. The sharks,
unless you blow them away with an offer, I don't see them moving off of two. The Canucks are
definitely not moving off of three. Maybe the Sabres move off of four.
just because they're in a really good spot.
They've done a really good bit of business over the past few days.
But much like I said about Toronto,
you probably would really have to blow them away to get up for number four.
The Rangers, they're probably staying at five.
They need a rebuild bad.
They need somebody in their system in a top five pick.
Flames don't see it.
They're rebuilding.
They're going to need a big piece.
Then you get into seven, eight, nine,
through about, let's say, 16.
You've got the Cracken, who we know that they were trying to get Jason Robertson,
and he turned them down.
Real quickly on that, I feel bad for Cracken fans,
because they have been really trying to get a premier player for the last couple of years.
They threw a lot of money at Artemian Panarin.
He said no.
And they had this trade agreed to.
They were going to give Dallas a seventh overall pick.
And Pat, they offered Robertson, Max turned basically with $15 million per,
and he still said, no, I'm not going there.
So I feel really bad for Seattle fans, to be honest.
But to that point, I don't know if it would be the Penguins because I don't see what they could offer Seattle right now.
But that is a team that I can see moving out of that.
The Jets, curious to see what they do because they're in a weird spot where they don't quite have to rebuild,
but they're quite not contenders either.
Helbuck has also requested a trade.
So we'll see what happens with that.
So that could also be part of it.
You also have the sharks who've got plenty of picks and they're sitting at nine.
Ten is the predators.
Don't know what they want to do.
But rather than going through the entire rundown of picks here,
I do think you're right that the idea of moving into the top five is pretty much a pipe dream
because you would have to give up quite a lot to get there.
But six through about 15, I can see them making work at some point because there's a lot of
teams like the Blues who have picks 11, 15, and 16.
The Devils, they're not exactly trying to rebuild themselves.
The Islanders, I doubt you're going in division,
but there is more of an opportunity for them to move into the top half of the draft tonight.
The Blues are the team that I am looking at.
They have a lot of first round picks.
You mentioned at Pat, 11, 15, and 16, though.
They do have 11 up for sale right now because I think they are trying to get Mason McTavish.
from the Anaheim ducks.
So if that trade does go through,
I think the ducks are going to get 11.
And then I think they're going to try to flip that pick for a player.
So maybe the penguins would call Anaheim, for example.
Although they also just traded Olinzellweger to Buffalo as the Bowen-Byrn replacement.
But 15 and 16, that might be the sweet spot there if you're trying to trade up for someone like Ryan Lynn.
There have been a lot of rumors, a lot of speculation.
The penguins really like him.
And they are eyeing a trade into that top half to try and see.
see if they can get him. Yeah, their love for Vigo Bjork is very well known. But honestly,
Pat, it's kind of looking more and more unlikely right now that they're going to be able to get him
just because the cost to get into the top 10 is going to be quite a bit. We know they tried to do it
last year. We're able to do it. It's easier to try to get up to 15, 16, just a few spots rather
than go into the top 10. You know, that's like 10 plus spots, obviously there for the Penguins. So
they like Ryan Lynn quite a bit. I would love it. He's kind of in my dream tier for
for tonight, him, Ty Lawrence, and then Vigo Bjork, those are my three dream tiers overall.
If you're able to trade up and get Ryan Lynn, you have an A plus night, in my opinion, for Kyle Dubus and West Clark.
Lynn is definitely on, and I've said it on the show, he is my absolute apex dream.
You have done very well in the first round for the penguins and Kyle Dubus.
But the thing that I kind of want to bring everything together of what we talked about earlier this week and what we're talking about now with the draft is the problem that the penguins have right now is that they don't have the premium assets they would need to move up.
It's pretty much Igor Chinikov and Ben Kindle.
And we know that they're not getting rid of either of them unless it is for an absolute king's ransom.
and then they're picking it 22.
So it's really hard to move around when you don't have the premium young assets that teams are looking for
and you only have a 20 second overall pick.
But we also do know that there are quite a few players that the penguins wouldn't be against parting with,
but for the right cost when it comes to Brian Rust, Ricard Raquel, even Eric Carlson,
depending upon what happens with that.
at the end of the day, the penguins are going to have to continue to do what they have been doing for the past 18 months and is being really savvy.
So I know a lot of people are refreshing Twitter.
They're refreshing the athletic and I'm among them.
But as we have said on the show multiple times, Kyle Dubus, he mostly operates in silence.
So a lot of the things that you're following and seeing, probably not what Kyle Dubus is looking to do.
Yeah, I mean, we haven't really heard too many rumors other than the Vigo Bjork stuff and the Ryan Lynn stuff.
I mean, it's been obvious that he wants to move up.
This is now two years in a row where he has wanted to.
He wasn't able to do it last year.
Time will tell if he's able to do it tonight.
I think you're mainly talking about, you know, roster decisions, though, because, yeah, trade-wise,
there's not really too many rumors out there about, you know, NHL players who he'd really be interested in going after.
you know the Robertson stuff, Pat, David Pagnona talked about that last night, saying the penguins are interested.
But that's been well documented.
Everyone knows that Kyle Dubus loves Jason Robertson.
They'd like to try to get him, but that price, I think, is going to be bigger than people expect.
And there's also no guarantee that he would even want to sign here.
Pat, he's rejected Seattle.
And then you probably saw Jeff Merrick's post.
The Blues tried to get him as well.
And Robertson said, no, I'm not going to St. Louis.
So you can offer really whatever you want, though I don't think the penguins are going to do that.
But it also comes down to Robertson has to decide if he wants to sign with whoever he wants to go to.
So tell what happens with that one.
That's the key point though.
And I actually do think we should spend a little bit of time discussing that because your colleague Kelsey Sermatz wrote about it.
It's the thing everybody wants to discuss right now.
So let's leave this segment here.
Let's go to break.
Let's come back.
We'll talk briefly more about Jason.
Robertson and then we'll get into the meat of the episode. We'll start talking about who we think
the penguins are going to take and what we think they're going to do this weekend. So hang with us.
We're going to get into more of that when we come back right after this.
But first, we've got a couple of sponsors to get to starting with our pals at five hour energy.

free trial let's pick it up right where we left off hunter with jason robinson you brought up a
really good point that i want to expand on a little bit he's already turned down seattle he's already
reportedly turned down St. Louis. And the thing that I will say is I really liked what Kelsey
wrote on the hockey news today about any time is the right time to go get an elite talent.
But at the end of the day, this is a two-way street. He does have to want to sign here.
And while I think the penguins just for their prestige, still having Sidney Crosby,
Evgeny Malkin and Eric Carlson is still pretty appealing.
You can see that the window isn't really open.
And it looks like Robertson wants to go somewhere where the window is open.
And we can moan and complain and yell about, oh, everybody wants to go to Vegas.
Everybody wants to go to Florida.
Everybody wants to go here, there, the other place.
It's not about taxes.
It's not about any of that.
it's about the fact that they can win.
Right, exactly.
You can throw Minnesota in there.
They're a perennial cup contender now.
Tampa Bay, I think their best years are behind them,
but they still make the playoffs every year.
They've won back-to-back cups.
Florida, two of the last three cups.
Vegas has been to three finals since they came into the league.
They've won one of them.
So, yeah, it's no surprise that a lot of the players want to go to those teams.
I think with Robertson, I've been so torn about this because, yeah,
I'd love for the Penguins to do it.
but I just don't think that's a trade that you can do on your own terms.
That's more of a trade that's going to be on Dallas's terms.
And I think it's going to be a package that it's going to be more than people expect.
Because I saw Kelsey's proposal.
I think it takes more than that.
And you may seem like, Hunter, how could you say that one, includes Rustin Raquel and a lot of picks and Will Horcombe and stuff?
Because I think Dallas would want their own version of Stan Coven back in that trade.
And I just, the penguins really don't have that.
Man, like, are you willing to include Ben Kindle in a package for Jason Robertson?
I love Jason Robertson quite a bit.
Personally, I am not comfortable trading Ben Kindle right now in that package.
I think it also potentially includes, you know, Chinakov as well.
Are you comfortable doing that?
Considering the way that he played.
And again, I love Jason Robertson.
He is an amazing player.
Wherever he goes, whether it's Dallas or somewhere else,
he is going to be a premier player.
He has been a premier player ever since he came into the league.
but I also don't think the penguins are just one player away from being a full contender.
Are you willing to dish out a whole bunch of your assets that you have spent a long time building up for this one player?
So yeah, I'm just really torn about it because on one hand again, I love the player.
He's so fun to watch.
On another hand, I just don't know if this is the right time for it.
and I'd be scared to see what it would take package-wise to get them,
because I think it's more than what Kelsey proposed personally.
That's where I am too,
but I will add the one thing that I do think does work in the Penguins favor a little bit.
The longer this drags on,
the longer that Dallas struggles to find a dance partner,
they continue to lose leverage.
You've already knocked out two teams.
Seattle and St. Louis, he's already said no to.
and they've pretty much made it clear.
They're not going to pay him what he wants.
So the longer this drags on, the less leverage the Dallas stars have.
So it could work out in the Penguins favor that way,
but at the same time,
there are going to be a lot of teams knocking and a lot of teams that can offer more.
So we'll see what happens with that.
But I do think if it continues on this way,
the Penguins do have at least a shot at making it work.
but that's neither here nor there.
It is night one of the NHL entry draft.
So Hunter, I know this is your Super Bowl.
So let's get into it.
You brought it up a little bit in the first segment.
I said if they can find a way to get themselves, Ryan Lynn,
that is an A plus night.
But for you, let's say they stay at 22.
What makes this a good night at 22?
Yeah, so I think if they stay at 22, if they take one of Tommy Blyle, J.P. Hurlbert, or Nikita Klepav,
I think that's an A-night.
Herbert, they obviously know because Harrison Brunich played with him in Canwops this past season.
He has a really nice release.
He's able to pick holes in any goaltender that he faces.
He's a good skater.
I still think his first burst could use a little bit more work.
His board play also really tough.
He's good at taking on defenders one-on-one.
He's two-way games.
He still needs a little bit of work, but I would still be.
be a fan overall of getting JP.
Also really good vision. Tommy Blyle, defenseman, one of my favorite defensemen in this range,
really good offensively, skates like the wind, really good in transition,
defends in his own zone really well.
I'd be a big fan.
He was great with the Wildcats this past season.
If he's the picket of 22, I'd also be a fan.
And then Nikita Klepov, just with the skill that he has, the one-timer, the vision that
he has from the half wall.
he's a dog man like he is a lot of fun to watch so i think those three i have them in my tier one
that i'd be really happy about if the penguins were to take one of those three tonight tier two
i have maddox dajne i'd be totally fine with him as the pick zavrilville knew i'd be happy with him
as well though i think there's actually a better chance pat that he goes to the second round
which he could be available at 39 depending on what the penguins do tonight in the first round
Adam Novotny, I would be a big fan of him considering the release that he has.
Marcus Nordmark, I'd be a fan of.
And then Elton Hermanson, I would also be totally fine with at 22,
because I think when he's on, he's a top 15 talent in this class.
And then the players I'm not high on, I've talked about a little bit.
Ilya Morozov doesn't really do it as much for me.
Jack Hextall, really strong two-way player, but I need more than that.
And then Alex came in, yeah, you can win a lot of face-offs really well.
I still need more out of you there.
I know Matthias Preston, people are asking me about.
I think you may be able to get him in round two, potentially if he slides like I expect,
though obviously that could change.
I know I've been asked about the Ruck brothers.
I personally don't see that.
I think the penguins have their eyes on other players, but I'd be fine with them.
I'd kind of have them in between tier two and tier three.
I've been asked about Wyatt Cohen.
He's going to be gone before 22.
You and I have talked a lot about him, Pat, really strong skill.
but I think he sometimes needs to be reined in a bit.
For sure.
I know that one of the players you brought up that I obviously I've already said
Ryan Lynn is my gold star.
You win Mario Party automatically pick for the penguins tonight.
But Hurlbird is one that I'm increasingly getting more comfortable with.
We talked about him with Jesse last week.
And the way I look at him is it's a multi-toll play.
with a lot of upside where I could see him developing into just about any type of player for
the Penguins if he hits a ceiling where I could see him being a top line player.
I can see him fitting in the middle six.
I could see him being a premium depth option depending upon how he develops.
And as we have talked about with Her overt, he's the kind of player where you don't have to
pigeonhole yourself into how you use him.
He can be used on the power play, the penalty kill, five on five, offensive situations,
defensive situations.
That's a player that to kind of connect the threat of what I said on yesterday's episode when I said,
hey, this is the most generic thing I'm going to say on this show, we know that at 22,
you're taking a player that is a project.
That is just a fact.
when you're when you're this low in the first round it's extremely rare you get somebody who is going to
be ready in the short term yeah but hurlbert checks the boxes of the kind of player where
you're getting a lot more upside than you are downside you're not looking at him and going
how we got to work on this this this this and this it's well he's doing pretty well with his
offensive game he's pretty solid two way but if we work on his physicality we work on his skating
he is going to be somebody that will have some value.
So for me, I look at 22 and if Heralbert is on the board,
that is who I would like to see them take.
Yes, that is actually my prediction,
kind of as a tease.
If they stay at 22, I am predicting J.P. Hurlbert is the pick tonight.
We'll see.
I would really like to see that myself,
but we have got plenty more draft talk to get into.
So make sure you're hanging with us as we close out,
the Friday edition, the draft preview edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast.
We'll be right back right after this.

We're closing out the Friday edition of the Locked-on Penguins podcast.
I'm Patrick Damp right alongside Hunter Hodes.
Penguins picking it 22 tonight.
So Hunter, let's have a little bit of fun to close out the Friday episode.
I'm going to put you right on the spot.
and I'm going to ask you straight up, do the penguins move up in tonight's first round,
and where do they move up if they do?
Right now, I'm going to say no, even though they really want to.
However, if they do, and I am wrong, I think they move up to 15 or 16, one of those blues
picks, and they take Ryan Lynn.
That is if they do that.
Right now, though, I think Pat, they stay at 22, and they pick J.P. Hurlbert.
I'll throw it to you. Do you think they trade up tonight? Do you think they have enough to do it?
I could see a world. And I think this is less likely to happen, but it would be the most Kyle Dubus thing that we don't hear about this and something happens with it.
I could see them doing business with the sharks and moving up tonight.
Because you look at all of the picks that the sharks have.
you look at how well they have done over the past few years with both drafting,
developing and acquiring talent that I can see the sharks and Kyle Dubus doing business together.
And with the sharks already picking it two and then having another pick later on in the draft
at 27 in everything else they have been in on in the fact that they pretty much have their
core set and will have it set even more after the second pick.
I can see the sharks throw in the penguins of bone and helping them out.
I don't know if it's going to be some big swing trade.
Maybe they package some picks together and a prospect that San Jose likes.
But I do think with a lot of the reporting and a lot of the smoke around the penguins
where a lot of the insiders are saying, hey, Kyle Dubis is burnt.
a hole in his phone with how much he's using it.
I could see that being the move that nobody sees coming.
That would be interesting, though.
I also think for the sharks,
I think they're going to take Stenberg at two.
If Verhof is there at nine,
I don't think you can move off that pick, man.
Like, I think if you're San Jose,
you just got to do it.
Like those are two players who could,
I mean, I know Stenberg is, to me,
ready next season, in my opinion.
Verhof, there's a chance he could be ready as well
as soon as next season.
So if you walk away with those two in the top 10 and like,
Verhof is there at 9,
I just don't think San Jose is moving off, man.
Like I think if he's gone by then,
there's at least a bit of a better chance.
But you have an opportunity to combine Stenberg and Verhof,
I just don't think San Jose can pass on that.
I can't.
See, that's where I am too.
And that's,
that was kind of more for me a bold prediction of what they're going to do.
just because we have seen this with Dubus with a lot of stuff where it may not be the biggest of moves,
but it's the move you don't see coming.
And I look at everybody that's involved, especially in that middle range.
I think you're more right that they're probably going to do business with the blues and find a way into 15 or 16.
But I look at that 7 through 15 range and I see the sharks at 9 and think that's a team that they have done
business with. They could do business with. But ultimately, my gut tells me, I think they're staying
at 22 and they're going to go BPA. I'm with you. I think they're going to stay at 22.
It'll be cool as hell if they trade it up to 15, 16 or whatever to go get someone like Ryan Lynn,
who we know they like quite a bit. I know they love Bjork. I just don't see that happening right now.
I think he'll be gone before they have a chance to go up there and get them.
But if they do trade up, they get sent to the teens, it's easier to do that.
But my gut tells me they're going to say at 22 and also go PPA.
My prediction is J.P. Herbert.
I, like I said in the last segment, would absolutely love that.
So here is how the weekend is going to go.
Make sure you are subscribed to us across all channels.
I know that one of myself or Hunter will be dropping a reaction to the pick,
whichever it may be.
So make sure you are tuned in for that.
If the penguins make any big trades throughout the weekend,
we will hop on here and do a quick emergency reaction episode.
But if it is just a simple, straightforward draft weekend for the penguins
where they make a couple moves here and there and they make their picks,
we will be back on Monday to recap the whole draft class,
give our thoughts on the penguins picks and all their actions.
activity over the weekend.
And then next week, we're right there, baby.
It's free agency day, as boring as it may be.
You do think that the penguins will be a little bit active on July 1st.
But that is going to do it for the Friday edition in the draft preview edition of the
Locked on Penguins podcast.
I just told you where you can find us.
Maybe we'll talk to you this weekend.
Maybe we'll talk to you on Monday.
Who knows?
But for Hunter Hodes, I am Patrick Damp.
Thank you, as always, for tuning in.
And that is going to do it for this week.
