Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins - Why the Penguins should be in on ANOTHER college prospect

Episode Date: June 16, 2025

Last summer, the Penguins surprised everyone by acquiring Ruter McGroarty; this summer, they have a chance to do something similar. Patrick and Hunter begin the Monday edition by discussing why the Pe...ngins should be interested in Tampa Bay prospect, and Hobey Baker winner, Isaac Howard. They get into what it would cost, how Howard would fit into the Penguins' system, and why he is exactly the type of young player that they need. Then, over the weekend, the Penguins announced they had signed 19-year-old Melvin Fernstrom to a three-year, entry-level deal and re-signed forward Boko Imama. This leads to a discussion of why Imama is a good vibes guy and what Fernstrom's ceiling is as a prospect. Finally, it's been reported that this will be Evgeni Malkin's final year with the Penguins...maybe. They get into what the future could hold for the Penguins' great. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!GametimeToday's episode is brought to you by Gametime. Starting point is 00:01:17 Hunter, we are rounding out the Stanley Cup final, which we will talk about in our final segment, which means we are about to get right into the nitty gritty of the offseason. the draft will be here before we know it. Free agency will be here before we know it. And as we know, it is going to be an interesting offseason for the Pittsburgh Penguins. While we know that they are not very likely to be active on the free agency market on July 1st, we do expect them to be pretty active on the trade market. And last summer, we all remember the surprising trade that the penguins made sending Braden
Starting point is 00:01:59 Yeager to the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for Rutger Magrorty. It appears that that is going to be a mutually beneficial deal as Rutger McGroity was trying to make the next step into the NHL. The Winnipeg Jets said, you're not quite part of our plans yet. The Penguins said, hey, you might not make the NHL roster full time, but you're going to get there a lot sooner in the Pittsburgh organization. And Braden Yeager should probably be part of their plans in the next year. two up in Winnipeg. So that was a bit of a shocking move because everybody thought,
Starting point is 00:02:35 okay, it's going to be other teams that are in a better position to go for Rutger Magrorty. And out of nowhere, the penguins threw their hat in the ring and acquired Rutger McGroity. They have a chance to do it again with another really impressive, really promising collegiate prospect who isn't very happy with his current team. And that is Michigan states, Isaac Howard with the Tampa. of a lightning. Now, before we get into what the penguins could do to get him, there is one part of this deal, potential deal, I should say, that might have us waiting for quite a while to see if the penguins are able to pull this off. And that is the fact that if the lightning do not trade him
Starting point is 00:03:20 before August 15th, they will get a compensatory second round pick. So right now, we'll talk about Howard him his game and what the Penguins do to get him. But right now, while it's not a lot, Tampa does hold a lot of the cards because no matter what happens with Howard, they're guaranteed to get a second round pick for him because by all reports and accounting, he's done with Tampa Bay. He is not going to be returning to them. So they're probably going to lose him. So the fact that Tampa kind of holds the cards right now, because no matter what, the baseline is a second round pick, they can kind of see what's out there, wait out the market, and see if they can get something better, or they can settle on the second round pick. So Hunter, I think the penguins should be in on this
Starting point is 00:04:10 every single day. Kyle Dubas should be calling Tampa every single day to try to pry him out. But what do you think? Kind of with the leverage is the key word here. They have two months to kind of get this trade done. As it gets closer to that August 15th deadline pat, that leverage is going to keep getting lower and lower and lower. I think Tampa's best case for a trade here is trading Isaac Howard for another top prospect in return similar to what we saw last year with Rucker McGority for Braden Yeager. I thought the Jets did as well as they could have in that trade with McGority. I think Tampa Bay is going to be looking at that deal thinking, okay,
Starting point is 00:04:49 if we can get something similar to that type of value back for Howard, that's a win for us. We just have to see if they'll be able to do that. I've seen some reports out there saying like, oh, they can maybe get a first round pick for him or something like that. I don't think Tampa has the leverage to get a first back for Isaac Howard. I think it might be along the lines of the Adam Fox trade that you saw a few years ago when he got traded to the Rangers for a second round pick and also a third round pick. I think if it's not that top prospect, I think Tampa Bay is going to have to settle for something like that. But to your other point, the Penguins should 100% be in on this, especially after they got McGority last year. go down this route with Isaac Howard.
Starting point is 00:05:28 He already is playing for Michigan State this upcoming season. After that, who knows, this past season, he won the Hobie Baker Award for the best player in college hockey, and he was awesome for Michigan State. 26 goals, 52 points in 37 games. A year before that, he had eight goals, 36 points and 36 games. He was also one of Team USA's best players at the World Junior U-20s in 2024. Seven goals and seven games, also nine points in those seven games. He was all over the ice for team USA during the World Juniors, excuse me, in 2024.
Starting point is 00:06:02 When you turn on the tape, the skating is one of the biggest things that really jumps out at you. That, I think, is the biggest difference between him and Rucker McGrody. McGority still need a lot of work with his skating after being acquired by the Penguins. With someone like Howard, he really doesn't need a lot of work there. Like, he has a great motor, and once he gets going, he can blow past a lot of defensemen. I think when he was coming out, one of the biggest knocks on him was his shot, but he's really fine-tuned that these last couple years. He was scoring a lot of really nice goals this year.
Starting point is 00:06:33 He's worked on his release. I think compared to where it was a few years ago when he was drafted by the lightning, it's night and day to me. I mean, he's a more silkier player than Rucker McGority. And again, Penguins, how much they want to get younger going forward, they should be all in on this type of player. You get McGority, who's kind of more of a net front, greasier player, really good fit on the top line at the end of the season with Sidney Crosby.
Starting point is 00:06:59 Howard, I think he projects also to be a good top line board, but is a bit silkier, good playmaker, has really worked on his shot, really nice skater. I think he will be a really good fit once he has fully developed into an international player again. He's going to be playing college hockey again this year for Michigan State. He did a great job for them this past season, winning the Hobie Baker.
Starting point is 00:07:19 But if I am Kyle Dubus, I am calling the Tampa Bay, lightning every single day to try and acquire this player. You did it last year with the Winnipeg Jets. There's no reason not to do it this year with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Yeah, here's something I will say that I think some people might balk at, and I think you will too. And this is just assuming that if you're the penguins and you're really interested in this guy and you want to get them done, here's where your leverage is.
Starting point is 00:07:45 They have three first round picks over the next two years. if you're willing to say part with the Rangers one over the next two drafts, let's say whether it's this one or next year, and you really want to pry this guy out. You really like them. You think he can be a key contributor over the next decade or so. You can offer one of those first round picks, I think, because one, you're looking at a Hobie Baker winner and a guy who is a really well-balanced player and has continued to build on getting better with each and every season in college hockey.
Starting point is 00:08:21 And you have that offer that not a lot of teams do. Now, the thing that might get in the way of that, Penguins don't have the deepest prospect pool yet. And there might be a couple of teams that have some B or C level prospects that they can offer up to Tampa Bay, as well as a second or a third round pick. And that sweetens the deal for Tampa Bay. And they choose to go with that.
Starting point is 00:08:45 But if you're willing to say, you know what, we have two first, yeah, we have three first round picks over the next two years. We can go grab a sure thing with one of those draft picks or we can wait and pick our lottery ticket over the next two drafts. I wouldn't be against it. Now, I would want to know what else would go along with it because I don't think this is worth breaking the bank over. he's a solid player, a lot of potential there.
Starting point is 00:09:17 Is he a superstar? Probably not. But at the end of the day, if you can use their leverage against your own to get him, I wouldn't hate that idea. See, I don't think he's going to cost a first. I think to me that's a bit of an overpayment. Again, I like the player,
Starting point is 00:09:35 but say you get the 12th pick this year from the Rangers, say they're like, okay, we're going to give you our pick this year. We're going to keep our pick next year. I think the 12 overall pick for Isaac Howard is a little too rich for me. I would do a second and a third somewhere along those range. If you want to do a second plus something else, not even a pick, but maybe a prospect going back to Tampa. I think that's a bit more realistic.
Starting point is 00:09:58 I just think a first for Isaac Howard at this point is a little rich for me. I would do a little bit less. I just think that's a little bit of an overpayment. So I'll push back a little bit on that. Again, I don't think it's what you need to offer to get him. I'm in I'm in a You don't have the leverage to ask for a first drop bag Like you even said kind of
Starting point is 00:10:18 That's true But it's only going to keep going down As we get closer to the August 15th deadline here When it comes to them needing to trade him I don't think they can even ask for a first right now And as it again as it gets closer That price I think is going to go down So we have to see what Julian Brisbane does here
Starting point is 00:10:34 Right and again to kind of reiterate my point I'm not saying Immediately put that first on the trade block and go get them but if you are trying to separate yourself and you have high confidence that Howard will project into a top nine, top six forward over the next couple of years, you have a bit more of a scouting report on what he could do than say somebody you're going to get over the next two drafts. And it's also, like I said, pitting leverage against leverage,
Starting point is 00:11:03 because we know that right now Tampa doesn't have to be in a rush to move him. They know that no matter what happens, they get a second round pick. So that is a market that's been set no matter what, no matter who is interested. They cannot lose him for nothing. So at this point, they don't have to be in a rush to move him. If you're the penguins and you want to sweeten the pot because you really like them, it's something to consider. But again, I'm not advocating in saying go do it right now, trade that first round pick and get him.
Starting point is 00:11:35 If you feel like you have to sweeten the pot, you have that leverage to pit against everybody else's. but very interested to see what they do with this. I think it's definitely worth the trade. It's definitely worth calling on and figuring out what he's going to cost because it'll only help what the penguins are trying to do. But that is going to end our first segment when we come back right after we finished recording on Friday. The penguins announced a pair of signings.
Starting point is 00:12:01 We're going to talk about those when we get back right after this. But first, we've got to tell you about today's first sponsor, and that is Monarch Money. That's monarchmoney.com code locked on NHL for half off your first year. Welcome back into the Monday edition of the Locked on Penguins podcast. I'm one of your host Patrick Damp right alongside the one and only Hunter Hodes. And the Locked on Penguins jinks strikes again, Hunter. we finish recording a show and what do you know the team drops some news on us they announced on Friday that they have signed one of their rookies that they acquired in the marcus peterson
Starting point is 00:13:53 trade melvin fernstrom they signed him to a three year entry level contract and they also brought back forward boco imama on a one year extension that second one we expected that to happen Dubus has kind of said as much that they were pretty much just waiting to iron out the details and bring back what I would call at least for now a Hall of Fame vibes guy. He is a fantastic vibes guy that you need in a situation like this where the Penguins were in. We will briefly touch on him later in the segment. But first, let's focus on Melvin Fermstrom. They acquired him in the Marcus Pedersen, Drew O'Connor deal that they made back in January,
Starting point is 00:14:38 with Vancouver. And this is a pretty promising 19-year-old forward. A lot of good stuff from him playing in the SHL, the top Swedish league, had a pretty solid year. He was the 2025 rookie of the year with eight goals and 17 points, which was the most among all rookies. The thing I'll say about that,
Starting point is 00:14:59 I say this a lot about European leagues as well as the KHL. You hear numbers like that, and they don't sound that impressive. but doing that in a top professional league in a country where there is a lot of good talent as a 19 year old, that's pretty impressive. It's going to be good to get him over here to North America so that he can really fine-tune some of the other parts of his game. For example, I think his shot is really good, but he's not a good skater until he works on that. I don't think he's going to be a full-fledged NHL player,
Starting point is 00:15:33 but he still has the potential to be a player because of his shot. So if he can really iron out some of his skating, he could potentially at least make a little bit of a difference here. If he's able to keep developing North America, you know, with Wheeling, Wilkesbury, all that stuff. I assume he's probably going to start this upcoming season with Wilkesbury. And again, that's going to be good for him to go up against some of these pros in the AHL, really work on his skating, utilize his shot to his advantage and all that stuff.
Starting point is 00:16:00 So I'm glad that he signed his ELC, and I'm glad that he's going to come over to North America because I really think he needs it, especially right now for his development. As for Boko-O-Mama, you're right. We were kind of just waiting for deciding to become official. Kyle Dubas spoke to Taylor Haas about this and said, like, yeah, we would like to bring Boko back on a contract. And literally a week after he talked to Taylor about that, they signed him. One-year deal, $775,000 at the initial level. And as you said it, Hall of Fame Vives guy, really good guy to have in the locker room.
Starting point is 00:16:32 I think Crosby and Malkin like having him around. I think they're comfortable having him around. And I know some people may scoff at that, roll their eyes. But even though they're a bit older, the fact that they like having Boko around, even though he's kind of a punishing big hitter, a little bit of a mini-enforcer,
Starting point is 00:16:51 even though there's really not many enforcers, if at all left in the NHL, the fact that they like having him around, I do think is at least a little bit of a big deal. And he can bounce between the penguins in Wilkesbury, throughout the season. And he's a totally fine 13th slash 14th forward to have around. There is literally next to no risk to having him on this team throughout the season.
Starting point is 00:17:12 I don't think he's going to be a top 12 guy every night, Pat. But if he's your 13th or 14th forward, I'm totally good with that. Right. We don't need to completely rehash the Amama conversation. If he ends up as a regular, that's probably either a problem or just shows us that they are throwing the towel in preemptively on next. lot of injuries too. That too. But that's, that happens with every season. But again, good guy to have
Starting point is 00:17:38 around by all accounts, he's extremely positive, works hard. And listen, you can't discount the entertainment factor of a guy like that. When you're a team like this in this, in this position that the penguins are, and you get into those slog February games where everybody's just counting down to the Stanley Cup playoffs and going through the motions, having a guy like a mom to throw a couple big hits, maybe getting a fight, gets the fans going. It's nice to have. Back to Firmsdrum real quick.
Starting point is 00:18:08 One of the other things that really stood out to me is his play internationally. He was a big time contributor for the Swedish junior under 20 team. He played 12 games for them last year, 11 goals, 7 assists, 18 points on the international stage. So you can see when he starts to go up against. other top competition on an international level, the offensive abilities are there. And again, being only 19 years old, being able to put up these kind of numbers in the SHL,
Starting point is 00:18:44 and then on the international junior stage, this is a player that if you really start to acclimate his game to North America, let him develop for a little bit, whether it's Wheeling, Wilkes-Barre or both, and really let him get a handle on what it's like to be a North America. pro this could be a guy who could project into a top nine forward for the penguins yeah we just have to see like they kind of took a flyer on him in the marcus peterson trade and why not like you have to take as many flyers on players as you can especially with where the penguins are right now but if you can get
Starting point is 00:19:18 him over here really keep developing him especially with his skating i do think he will have the ability to turn into an nchel forward we just have to see what happens but i think for this upcoming season you'll probably see a lot of it in wilksbury but you may see a little bit of it with Wheeling as well. I'm excited to track him throughout this upcoming season, especially now that he signed his ELC. So good news on that front. Also love the name Melvin for a first name. Absolutely awesome. And then for Boko, again, literally no risk for that signing. Good 13, 14th, 4 to have a round. And you know when he plays, something really fun is going to happen. Absolutely. And again, real quick to add to end of the segment, biggest thing we got to keep
Starting point is 00:20:02 in mind for the next couple years is you're going to see a lot of these like hunter said a lot of these flyers part of it is going to be just seeing what you got throwing as much against the wall seeing what sticks but again i come back to this is something that i think kyle dubus is is continuing with the penguins that has been a trend for the past couple we'll say decade and a half at least penguins are really all in on developing and using their minor league clubs they're really all in Wheeling's not just an ECHL affiliate that they have to have. They want players to go down there and develop. Same thing goes for Wokes Bear.
Starting point is 00:20:38 They want these guys to play good, meaningful hockey at the minor league level so they can learn how to be pros. They can learn how to win. And for a lot of them, they can learn how to win and grow together. So when they hopefully develop into NHL talent, they will be ready to take that step together with the big club. He was also a former third round pick. So anything like you get out of them at the initial level, man, like that's such a big bonus because of the way the draft works with the NHL.
Starting point is 00:21:07 So again, it's a flyer. You throw it up a dartboard. Let's let's see what happens. We're really mixing metaphors here. So I think that means it's time to put a cap on this segment and move along to our final segment. When we come back, we are going to talk about some reporting from Josh Yohey today about Evgeny Malkin as well as quickly touch on. the Stanley Cup final and where it stands right now. We will do that when we get back.
Starting point is 00:21:34 Stick with us. We'll be right back. Happy Monday, everybody. Welcome back in to the locked on penguins podcast. I'm Patrick Damp one more time right alongside Hunter Hodes. And Josh Yohe had some reporting this morning in the athletic, essentially confirming that this will be likely, Evgeny Malkins last season in Pittsburgh.
Starting point is 00:22:04 We got to talk about that wording because that could mean quite a few things. Now, it's been pretty much largely accepted that this is going to be of Gennie Malkin's final year as a penguin. What does that mean, though? We're not entirely sure yet. We don't know if this means he's going to hang him up after this year. We don't know if this means he's going to go play in Magnitogorsk for a couple years to put a cap on his career. or if he's going to go somewhere else in the NHL. The thing about that last part,
Starting point is 00:22:41 Gino's been pretty vocal that he doesn't want to play for any other NHL teams, but we also know these guys are the biggest competitors on Earth. And if they still think that they can go, they are going to try it until they are absolutely told no. So Hunter, I'm going to let you run with this one, because we talked about this for quite a bit before we hit record.
Starting point is 00:23:05 You know what's funny? The first thing that really popped into my head when I saw Josh put that article out was how have we already gotten to this point? I still remember 2009 against the Carolina Hurricanes, Gino doing his insane spinner goal as a 22-year-old. And it's already been 16 years since then. The dude is about to be 39.
Starting point is 00:23:27 Where did all of the time go, man? It really is crazy that we've already gotten to this point. I think all of us are insanely old at this rate. But I understand why Josh put the article out that he did. Again, you know, Pat and I, we don't really doubt his reporting that much. But I still think a lot can change over the next calendar year. Maybe the penguins see how he does this year. He has a good year.
Starting point is 00:23:54 And they're like, hey, let's sign you to a one-year deal. Maybe you'll take a little bit more of a pay cut. I mean, he's been doing that throughout his entire career. Maybe you'll take, I don't know, just throwing a number out. you know, 4.5 to 5 million on a one-year contract. You can keep doing something like that for as long as you want, maybe do another year. Who knows?
Starting point is 00:24:13 That could also happen. Maybe he wants to go play in the KHL after this season with Alex Ovechkin, because this season could also be Alex Ovechkin's final year in the NHL. No one will be surprised by that. I still would be a bit sick if the Penguins decided not to re-sign him, Pat, and he went on to play one more season in the NHL for another team. I think that would just be, I don't know, it would kind of just give me the hibby-jibbies. I would feel kind of gross about it, to be honest.
Starting point is 00:24:42 I don't think that's going to happen, but if it did, I would kind of feel a bit nasty with it. But we've known this day was probably coming for a while now, but we still have to see what happens once the season gets underway and once the season officially ends. So I guess for this, stay tuned. Again, I'm not doubting Josh's reporting because it felt like this is probably the most plausible outcome, same with Ovechkin, but we still have to see what happens, how he does the season, and then if there's any contract talks after this upcoming season, all that. But if it does officially get announced that this will be his final season in the league, I will cherish this season even more because I will be really hoping that Gino walks off in the sunset. Again, don't think he's going to win a cup this year, but I still want him. walking off into the sunset in some capacity. That's kind of where I am.
Starting point is 00:25:38 And I'm sorry everybody, but I have to do it. I have to talk about the potential nuclear option. And as I said to Hunter before we recorded, it's one in a billion. It is one in a billion probably never going to happen. But there is also the potential of him being traded. And while I highly doubt it would ever happen, You can see a world where he doesn't have a down year, but he doesn't have a great year.
Starting point is 00:26:08 And you understand that you're probably not going to resign him. So you can send him somewhere. I can't believe I'm going to say it. Florida, because he lives down in Florida in the off season, and he can do whatever he wants there. You get something for him. But again, one in a billion, highly doubt it would ever happen. highly doubt he'd agree to it unless the relationship becomes so toxic.
Starting point is 00:26:36 And that would be a problem in and of itself alone, away from him potentially retiring or going to Russia. You don't even put that into the universe. You're out to lunch even on that one in a billion chance here. Get out of here, Pat. Hey, we got to be realistic on this show here, Hunter. We can't sit here and shelter ourselves because we don't want things to exist. That's not how we operate.
Starting point is 00:26:58 But obviously, like Hunter said, it's a stay tuned moment. We'll see what happens real quick. Before we close out the show, the Florida Panthers are one win away from repeating as Stanley Cup champions after a win over the Edmonton Oilers over the weekend. And there is one thing I want to say about the final, because we're running out of time here, is the Edmonton Oilers need Connor McDavid to put his super. man cape on and be Superman. In no world has he been bad in this Stanley Cup final. You look at his stat line. He's doing pretty well,
Starting point is 00:27:37 eight points. But there has not been a lot, if any signature Connor McDavid moments. And if there was ever a time, it's right now. He had the goal in game five to try and pull the Oilers back in, but literally right after that, the Panthers restored their three goal lead.
Starting point is 00:27:55 And that was the most Florida Panthers win. of all time. The way they suffocated the Oilers on the road, the way they gave up, nothing in the middle of the ice, the way they kept everything to the outside. It was a defensive clinic from the Panthers. And nothing seems to rattle this team. The way they lose game four, you're up three goals. You have a chance to win it in overtime to take a stranglehold on the Oilers with Sam Bennett, hitting the crossbar. They lose with Leon Drys Idol winning the game in overtime, sending it back to Alberta tied and they're just like okay oh hum we lost it's okay whatever i feel like every other team would
Starting point is 00:28:34 have been rattled by that and then gotten smoked in edmonton other panthers they're like yeah we're just going to play our game shut down your best players not give you anything in the offensive zone get a few past cal pickard it was just a textbook panthers win and now they have a chance to win their second straight stanley cup at home on tuesday i still hope this goes seven games i kind of want to see Edmonton find a way to send this back to Alberta. I want to see Connor and Leon put on their Superman capes yet again. They need to be a lot better after game five. I thought Leon was a little bit bad in game five.
Starting point is 00:29:10 But again, I don't feel like a lot of Oilers played well in that game. I think McDavid had a pretty good third period. He was knifing through some dudes, had that nice goal. But he definitely has another level to reach. But hey, just for my series prediction, I need the Oilers to find a way to win this game on the road to send us back to Alberta for a winner take all game seven. We're almost to the end here, people, at least one more, if not two games left in the season before all hell is going to start breaking loose with the draft, trades, free agency. We've only scratched the surface when it comes to this off season.
Starting point is 00:29:41 Yeah, there's a lot of chatter out there, but I'm kind of ready for the season to be over at this, right, even though this has been a fantastic Stanley Cup final. And, oh, yeah, people, we know that Pat brought up the one in a billion chance for Evgeny Malkin. You can let him know in the comments that he's out to lunch. It's okay, guys. Hey, that's why I said one in a billion. I didn't say it was guaranteed. I didn't say they should. I said one and a billion.
