Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Anthony Hill FLASHING TALENT at Tennessee Titans OTAs & Cam Ward Has PERFECT FIT with New Coaches
Episode Date: June 2, 2026The Tennessee Titans traded up to get linebacker Anthony Hill in the second round and with that comes the expectation he can make an immediate impact. That means it is great news to hear that Hill has... already been flashing in practice from his direct position coach. Hill taking a step forward and filling a starting role early on would be a good sign for the defense. On offense, the Titans new coaching staff is a perfect fit for Cam Ward due to the amount of research and work they had done on Ward going into last year's draft and a recent comment from the Titans quarterback coach made that obvious. Finally, the Titans want to rotate the defensive line a ton, but that means limited snaps for Jeffery Simmons. However, the Titans coach on the defensive line said Simmons is bought into the approach fully. Tennessee Titans rookie linebacker Anthony Hill has been flashing at practice over the last few weeks.
And if that doesn't get you excited, just wait until I tell you what his position coach had to say on today's edition of Locked on Titans.
You are Locked on Titans, your daily Tennessee Titans podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.
Welcome to the Locked-on Titans podcast.
I am your host, Tyler Rowland Titans fans on today's show.
We got to go back and go through some of the comments
that the Tennessee Titans position coaches had to say last week at OTAs.
Basically, every position coach spoke with the media,
and there were a lot of interesting comments at every single different spot.
Now, we're going to go through offense, defense, all of that.
but I got to start with Anthony Hill, the Tennessee Titans rookie linebacker.
He's somebody who I have had a circle around throughout the all-season process since the NFL draft
as one of the Titans rookies who could make the biggest impact early on.
I've talked about Anthony Hill maybe having the best rookie year of any of the Tennessee
Titans rookie class because I think he's going to be able to get on the field.
He has the ability.
He has the athleticism.
He has the build to have an instant impact.
He's a perfect fit in this defense.
And if that information, just that general knowledge of Anthony Hill,
his skill set in the defense, of course,
the linebacker success that Robert Salas had throughout his career,
if that right there wasn't enough to get you excited about what Anthony Hill could be
for the Tennessee Titans and could be right out of the gate immediately early on,
well, let me introduce you to what the Tennessee Titans linebacker coach,
Dave Borgonzi, and if you recognize the name, yes,
that is the brother of Titans general manager, Mike Borgonzi.
Dave Borgonze, the Titans linebacker coach,
said they've thrown a lot at Anthony Hill,
and he's handled the playbook well.
He said he's flashed a few times in practice.
The Titans have had basically five or six practices.
Well, when this was said, the Titans had had five practices.
with the full squad, the full team, the rookies, the vets, everybody included involved.
Normal off-season practices.
And Anthony Hill's already flashing.
We know from the very first week,
the very first week of Tennessee Titans OTAs,
Anthony Hill got an interception.
First open practice.
Could have been a pick six, maybe.
Now, pick six in these practices,
is their contact, would they have ran through it?
It was an interception.
That's what we know.
And Anthony Hill is going to be a downhill force against the run.
So if he can figure things out in coverage,
that's really what it comes down to.
So if you're telling me that Anthony Hill's position coach
has said that they've thrown a lot at him mentally
and he's handled the playbook well.
And then he's also come out and say
he's flashed a few times in practice already.
when they've barely practiced this early in the process for a rookie,
that's great news for me.
And it makes me believe that Anthony Hill is on track to start day one for the Titans.
That has been my belief is that he will start over Cody Barton.
And if he's handling the playbook well,
if he's flashing in practice at this stage when it's mostly coverage-based things,
because remember, the pads are not on.
So thumping in the run game,
getting downhill and taking on a lead blocker,
blitzing and knocking a running back out of the way,
all these things that we know Anthony Hill could do
based on his college tape.
I know he can do those things well.
He can play downhill with force and physicality
as a blitzer, as a gap shooter.
I know that he can do that.
Is he going to be able to withstand in cover?
at the NFL level.
So if he's flashing in practice,
and like Robert Sala said,
the Tennessee Titans head coach,
that this portion of OTAs is basically glorified seven on seven.
Because there's no pads, the trenches can't go full go,
it's basically passing stuff.
So if Anthony Hill is understanding the playbook,
If Anthony Hill is flashing in practice,
that means that both of those statements are relative to past coverage.
He's understanding where to drop back in his zones.
He's understanding where he's supposed to be within the coverage scheme.
He's identifying the quarterback's eyes, flashing to the football within his zone,
making the play that he's supposed to make.
And when it comes to him making that play,
You don't always make the play when you're ready to make a play.
He's making it.
Now, I know it's only been a couple of weeks of off-season practice,
and we can't fit the guy for the Hall of Fame jacket now,
but these are good things to hear when his position coach
didn't need to go out of his way to say that he's flashing.
He didn't say that about everybody.
Now, Borges, he had some other things to say,
and one of them is very interesting.
Cody Barton, he said he's been great.
he's a leader, he's a coach on the field.
That's why I think Cody Barton's going to stay around.
I talked about Barton is a surprise cut candidate.
If you're looking for somebody to be a cut candidate
that you didn't expect that actually would surprise you.
I think Cody Barton is on the list,
but because of that intelligence, because of that leadership,
with all of the other young guys in the locker room,
like Mike Borgesi talked about,
the young guys at the linebacker spot,
having a guy like Cody Barton who, yeah, maybe you don't necessarily want him on the field.
You would prefer Anthony Hill to take that spot from him.
But if he did have to play, it wouldn't be the worst thing of all time.
And in the meantime, he can mentor and help.
Cody Barton has a great personality.
You watch his miced up videos or you see other people's videos and he's involved.
He just has a very bright, very fun, very encouraging.
I'll never forget him talking to David,
was a Benda,
the undrafted free agent linebacker out of Texas last year.
And he's just so encouraging, you know,
it's a young guy, undracted free agent,
fighting for his life.
Why did Cody Barton have to take the time to up?
But that's what he's doing.
So I just think Cody Barton is in a place
where he wants that mentorship role.
He wants to be the guy that the Titans need him to be
for their young linebackers.
And some people have worried about Cedric Gray.
He had such a good year,
year, what's he going to do?
They're changing the system.
Well, Dave Borganzi said that it's a different scheme,
but not much is going to change.
Number one job for a linebacker is to find the ball.
Said he wants him to go run and hit.
Run and hit.
That's what a linebacker does.
So is that much going to change for Cedric Gray
because the scheme is changing, the system is changing?
Not really.
go hunt the linebacker's linebacker.
Go get the ball. You know what I mean?
It reminds me of the replacements.
Go get the ball, Danny. Go get the ball, coach.
That's linebacker 101 right there.
Find the ball, attack the ball, be physical, be violent,
take the ball carrier to the ground.
Cedric Gray is going to be able to continue to do that.
But I'm hoping, again, that it's Anthony Hill who is next to him
and the Titans have one of the most athletic,
one of the most physical downhill linebacker combos
in the entire NFL.
it all comes down to
Kid Ced Cedric Gray and Anthony Hill hold up in coverage,
which again, that's why I'm so excited about this Anthony Hill comment
and what we're hearing about Anthony Hill coming out of practice
is because if he is doing well in the coverage areas,
you add to what he can be in run defense.
Now we're talking, folks.
Now we're talking.
But with that being said,
there's more to talk about on defense,
especially in the secondary snap counts.
If the Titans are going to rotate their defensive line,
like they're saying,
are they getting the most out of Jeffrey Simmons? Will Simmons be happy with that?
A lot to discuss there, but now it's time to talk about Cam Ward and the offense.
Because again, I think this is just a perfect coaching staff for Cam Ward in year two.
And a comment that Titans quarterback coach Shay Tierney said recently
made me feel even more bold about that.

Let's continue today's edition of the Locked-on Titans podcast.
Again, we're breaking down comments from the Tennessee Titans assistant coaches
from their position coaches.
I found some very, very interesting,
and they kind of weave into some of the big conversations that we're having around the team right now.
Anthony Hill taking a step forward, the linebacker group.
We were there with Dave Borganzi.
But now I want to talk about the offensive side of the ball,
Cam Ward and his coaching staff and why it continues to be proven that it's such a perfect fit.
Before we dive in, I want to thank you again for making the Lockdown Titans

But there was a comment
from Tennessee Titans quarterback coach
Shay Tierney
at Friday's practice
that just solidified once again
that this is the perfect
coaching staff for Cam Ward in year two.
It's literally perfect.
They asked Shea Tierney, Titans quarterback coach,
about what mechanical things.
Cam Ward has been working on,
what mechanical things did they change with Cam Ward
after they got hired, this and that.
Tierney said, no big change that we've focused on.
Cam has had good mechanics going back to Incernate Word.
Cam had good mechanics last year. Washington, Miami
said it's more about doing everyday drills just to be more consistent.
When Tierney said, yeah, he's had good mechanics going back to Incernate Word.
You know what that means, right?
That Shea Tierney has watched Cam Ward's Incernate Word reps.
He even said,
I've watched every snap he has ever taken.
Like, and I'm sure he means at college.
I doubt he's watching Cam Ward in high school
when they're running the wing team and, you know,
that kind of crazy high school offense.
But that just drives home
how I felt about this higher all along.
I think I made a short video on it a couple of weeks ago
or when I talked about the Brian Dable plan for Cam Ward.
you could not have picked a better coaching staff
to take over with Cam Ward
in this circumstance.
There is no coaching staff in the NFL
more prepared to coach Cam Ward
than Brian Dable's coaching staff.
It was Brian Callahan
and then Brian Dable.
No, there's no way anybody in this.
the NFL did more work, more time, more research, not only on the football player, but the person
as Dable and his staff did on Cam Ward, like Brian Callahan and his staff certainly did on Camor.
And I would not be shocked, knowing what we know now with how good of a coach Brian Callahan
is and just his general mentality as a person.
I would not be shocked that Brian Dable and his staff did more extensive research on Camort.
spent more hours learning Cam Ward than Brian Dable did.
Would not be shocked in any capacity.
Would you?
I wouldn't.
Now, just because Brian Callahan wasn't a great head coach,
doesn't mean like he's lazy and they didn't do the work and stuff.
I'm just saying, Brian Dable, with his experience and his knowledge and his intelligence,
probably knows what to look for more, can be more efficient in his process.
That's what I'm thinking.
So again, Brian Dable has talked about meeting camp, going to dinner with this family, talking about the whiteboard.
What did you see? Why did you do this? What are you reading? What are you looking for?
What's your process here? Doing all of that groundwork on Cam Ward and then being able to watch his rookie season from afar, be like, why are they doing that with him?
Why are they having him do this? Why aren't they correcting this? Why aren't they doing more of this with him?
Why aren't they changing that?
Why aren't they?
And then actually having the opportunity to do it,
it would be like, to me, here's what I would relate it to.
Say you had a crush your whole life.
This one girl, this one boy, whatever.
Your whole life all throughout school, since elementary school,
you had a crush on them, never got to date them,
never had the courage, this and that.
You get into high school, they get a serious, you know,
partner, whatever, blah, blah, blah.
and then at the end of high school, they break up.
And they finally give you a chance.
Not only have you been preparing for this moment your whole life,
just generally preparing for it,
but you also got to watch somebody fail.
So not only have you thought of your whole time
what you would do,
but now you have seen what someone else tried and didn't work or did work.
You are now as prepared as ever
to get the job done.
and to do it right.
You know what I mean?
So it's like, it's not just that they prepared for Cam Ward.
It's that they got to watch someone else fail in that rookie season.
And that rookie season,
Cam isn't going to be the best version of himself.
It's not going to be 100% certain what he's going to do well,
what he's not going to do well.
So the fact is,
Brian Daible didn't have to take the punishment
of the failures of Cam Ward's rookie year,
but he gets to benefit from the growth of Cam Ward's rookie year.
going into year two, and then help that growth himself.
And again, with somebody who has studied every throw,
Cam Ward has ever made at a serious level of football
all the way back to incarnate work,
how could they have picked somebody better for Cam Ward?
And it's funny, I think of that Brian Dable story
where last year at the draft,
he tried to jokingly get Mike Organzi
to not draft Cam Ward at the top
so that the Giants could draft Cam Ward.
And it's like, in that moment,
I bet Mike Borgonzi was thinking,
hey, if I need another coach for Cam Ward,
it's Brian Dable.
You know, so, and we've already heard
that Mike Borgonzi
had contacted Brian Dable
before he ever hired Robert Sala.
He had already put in the groundwork
of hiring Brian Dable as the offensive coordinator
before he hired.
I'm sure he had Sala in mind.
But Brian Dable said that,
that he had talked to him before.
So Mike Borgonzi knew, hey, the best possible coach that I could hire this all season
and the best possible coaching staff that I could hire to get Cam Ward to develop
is Brian Dable's crew.
And that's what they got.
And that comment from Shea Tierney, it's just like,
fireworks in my mind like, man, that's real.
That's not something that I'm just making up to get hype about Cam Ward and these coaches.
that is a real factor in Cam Ward's development.
Now, I want to stay on offense
because they talk to Carmen Bracillo,
the Titans offensive line coach,
and a few things that stood out to me.
Austin Schlotman said, quote,
we're excited to have him.
He makes the transition easier.
He sets the expectations for what we want
in the locker room and drills in the system.
I'm telling you, folks,
Schlotman's going to be the start.
starting center. Now he was asked, is there competition for the starting center role?
And he gave a non-answer. Carmen Priscilla was like, we're competing right now,
but everybody's competing to get better. There's training camp in the preseason
for like position battles. Like are you going to get the starting center role? He said right now
everybody's just trying to get better. So it's kind of a non-answer, but I'm telling you,
Austin Sloatman is going to start at center.
I'm just fully convinced that that's the case.
The way that coaches talk about him,
the way that Peter Skoronsky talked about him,
the answer that Bracillo gave about how he's making everything easier
and he's setting the expectation for everybody else in the room
because he knows the system, knows what they want out of each drill,
out of the, like, he's just got too much of a head start
in the coach's mind, in my opinion,
to not end up being the starting center.
Like, I just, I can't believe that.
So he said changes from Bill Callahan.
He said he respected Bill Callahan,
but there are some things that they want to do just a little differently,
technique-wise, which makes sense.
Everybody's going to do stuff just a little bit differently.
And one of the thing that really stood out to me is he said that Carmen Brissilo
said that he has a reputation for giving the most difficult quiz
at the draft of any of the offensive line groups.
And he's, like, proud that his quiz is super tough.
Because he said, very difficult to learn.
The capacity to learn is very important for offensive linemen in the NFL
because it's such a complicated position.
So he wants his quiz to be tough.
And then he talked about how Pat Coogan, Fernando Carmona,
passed the quiz.
They were good.
They showed that they're very intelligent and very tough.
So hopefully that means good things going forward.
but having a difficult draft quiz.
I like that from Carmen Brissillo.
That's the type of stuff that I like to learn about the coaches.
So very cool to hear that.
Now, with that being said,
more to talk about on the defensive side of the ball,
specifically snap counts on the defensive line,
and then some interesting things that we got about the second day.

Again, we're going through some comments
from the Tennessee Titans position coaches,
the assistant coaches on the coaching staff.
We talked about Anthony Hill flashing.
We talked about Cam Ward and his perfect coaching staff.
But now I want to talk about some other stuff
on the defensive side of the ball, Big Jeff,
being mad about his snap counts in the secondary with three secondary coaches.
A little confusing there, but before we get into all of it,

But the Titans have been talking about
rotating the defensive line.
It's something that Robert Salah
has been very focused on.
It's something that he seems very committed to.
They don't want defensive linemen to play more than about 60% of the snaps.
Robert Sala actually said on Friday that if you could play four snaps in a row in this defense,
you aren't going hard enough.
Four steps.
Now, when I heard those things, my first thought was,
well, I certainly want Jeffrey Simmons to play four snaps in a row, right?
why would I only have Jeffrey Simmons on the field for three plays at a time?
What if it's freaking four straight plays at the one-yard line,
fourth and goal for the game in the fourth quarter?
Now, I'm sure there will be some situational things and stuff like that.
But Aaron Whitecotton, the Titans defensive line coach,
said Jeffrey Simmons had no pushback, quote, no pushback
to the idea of the rotation on the defensive line.
He said, Jeff's all in.
All the guys are in.
So, yeah, I guess so right now.
But again, when the Titans are down by seven and it's the third quarter
and the opposing offense is driving and Jeffrey Simmons hasn't played in three plays
and then he comes in and he plays two plays and you want to take him back out
and put back in Jordan Elliott or something like Jeffrey Simmons might say,
no, like it's easy to be bought in right now when the game isn't on the line.
I don't know how I feel about that personally.
Like I understand the general philosophy of a rotation on the defensive line to keep everybody fresh.
Like that is a good idea.
But this firm stance of can't play more than three plays in a row, only 60% of snaps.
Like, I just think that's a bit too rigid when you have a player like Jeffrey Simmons
who has showed you consistently that he can do more and play more and you need him.
So I don't know how I feel about that.
I got to see it play out and see if I think it's too little.
or not. We'll see. I'm going to keep a pin in that.
Do you want to mention Aaron Whitecotton talked about
Caldric Folk.
Said he's got great physical tools, great mental abilities,
a great person,
said they're just playing them on the right hand side right now
because they just want him to, quote,
get his hand in the dirt and know what to do.
I just learn one spot.
Just understand what your primary position is in the defense.
and then as we go along,
we'll start to cross-train you as an inside rusher,
flip you over to the other side,
be a different, because remember,
they could switch sides and stuff,
but there are positions on the defense.
And Keltric Falk is playing a different position
than Jermaine Johnson or Femiola Dejo.
You know what I mean?
So that's something to keep in mind.
They just want Anthony Hill to get good
at what he's doing right now
and keep things simple.
so that he can move forward.
And last thing, Aaron Whitecotton said that he coaches like a deranged raccoon.
I thought that was crazy, but watching him, as we've talked about,
he does look like he coaches like a deranged raccoon.
And I thought his comment about Jim Washburn, who used to coach in Tennessee,
a defensive line coach, we're cool.
There's a Tennessee connection for Aaron Whitecotton as the coach here.
He's a great coach.
Aaron Whitecotton's really a great coach.
So I think you do got to be a little off your rocker to be a great defensive line
in the NFL.
In the secondary.
The Titans have three secondary coaches.
So there's a cornerback coach,
a safety coach,
and then a nickel coach.
But all three of the guys,
Tony Oden, Mark Juan Manuel,
and Dalton Hilliard,
they all basically said, like,
hey, we could coach everybody.
Hilliard is the nickel coach,
but he could coach the safeties.
And Odin is the cornerback coach,
but he can coach the Nichols.
And Mark Wand is the safety coach.
coach, but he could coach the cornerbacks.
He said they're all interchangeable.
Got a, you know, that's basically what all three guys said across the board.
That's interesting.
Community-based coaching is what Dalton Hillier called.
I thought that was interesting, but I don't really think it's like a big deal or anything.
Sure, coach everybody.
You know what I mean?
I found it more interesting the comments that they made about individual players.
Like Tony Oden talked about Alante Taylor on the outside and said they think his
athleticism in his length give him the ability to play that.
But he has certainly been inside more often.
He talked about Marcus Harris.
They all talked about Marcus Harris.
He's got a great, Tony Odin said he's got a great mind.
He's a good communicator.
He said that the nickel back skill set has the chance to unlock the defense.
And then basically described everything that they needed in Marcus Harris.
So there you go.
More hype from the coaching staff.
Dalton Hilliard, who's going to be the nickel coach.
He said that Harris has been pretty phenomenal so far.
He's in early, works in the film room.
He's a hard worker.
He's out late.
Again, more hype for Marcus Harris.
And Marquan Manuel talked about Kevin Winston.
He said that he's learning the nuances of the position.
He loves football.
And then the big nickel thing,
Mark Juan Manuel, the Titan safety coach,
was asked about Big Nickel,
and it was Paul Kaharski, who asked the question.
I find it very interested.
He basically said, like, is Tony Adams your big nickel.
Which, I have a hard time believing that Paul would ask that question
without seeing Tony Adams play in the big nickel spot.
Like, why would you just make that up and suggest himself?
So Tony Adams is your big nickel guy, right?
Without having any inclination or any idea that that is the case.
Because I would lean towards if I had to pick between Tony Adams,
Amonie Hooker, and Kevin Winston,
I would pick Kevin Winston
to be the big nickel guy, in my opinion.
So if Tony Adams is that,
that's interesting.
Manuel said they're all interchangeable.
We have a combination of guys who can do it.
So he gave nothing away.
So I just found that peculiar, I guess.
Like, do you really just make up that name and throw it out there?
Or like, are we to believe that Tony Adams is the big nickel?
Curious. Curious.
Got to put a pin in that one as well.
But with that being said, that is going to do it for today's edition of the show.
Tomorrow I'm going to be back.
I think going over some depth chart revelations, things like that.
We'll see what happens.
But with that being said, again, that is going to do it for me today.
As always, I am your host, Tyler Rowland.
And this was Locked on Titans.
