Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Calvin Ridley PAY CUT Shows COMMITMENT to Tennessee Titans & Free Agent WISHLIST for Remaining Needs
Episode Date: March 16, 2026The Tennessee Titans had a big decision to make with wide receiver Calvin Ridley. Ridley was a potential cut candidate due to his high salary, but the Titans made the right decision to keep Ridley aro...und in a move that shows Ridley is committed to the Titans as well. While this was the right call, it does open up opportunities for Ridley to be moved in the future, but for the time being, this is an amicable decision for both sides. With Ridley locked in, the Titans can now get back to their free agency moves. While plenty have been made, there are still needs on the roster that need filled and the Titans have plenty of money to fill them. On offense, center, right guard and running back remain openings with tight end being a sneaky option. On defense, depth at linebacker and edge still remain a question mark. Calvin Ridley took a pay cut to stay with the Tennessee Titans.
Not only is that great news right now, but it's great for the future as well.
I'll explain on today's edition of Locked on Titans.
You are Locked on Titans, your daily Tennessee Titans podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast network,
your team every day.
Welcome to the Locked on Titans podcast.
I am your host, Tyler Rowland Titans fans,
on today's show. I'm going to talk about how Calvin Ridley took a pay cut to show his commitment to the Tennessee Titans.
That is great news for the Titans right now, but it also is great news for the future.
Also, heading into week two of free agency, I'm going to give you my remaining wish list on offense and defense and who I think the Titans still should sign.
Before we dive in, do want to thank you for making Locked on Titans your first listen each and every day.

It's your team every day.
Speaking of every day, shout it to my everydayers out there.
Tune in Monday through Friday, couldn't do it without you guys.
If you aren't an everydayer, what are you doing?
The Titans still have more moves to make here in free agency.
The draft is right around the corner and before you know it,
the Tennessee Titans will be back out on the football field.
You want to stay as up to date, as in foreign,
as entertained as a Tennessee Titans fan could possibly be.
Make sure that you stay locked in
with the number one Tennessee Titans podcast in the world.
Locked on Titans.
But with that being said, again, we got the news over the weekend
that Calvin Ridley would be restructuring his contract
to stay with the Tennessee Titans for the season.
And I think this is absolutely great news.
The reality here is the Tennessee Titans wide receiver group
is not that great.
And just because they added Wondell Robinson
doesn't mean that the Titans all.
of a sudden have solved their wide receiver issue. It is very far from being solved.
Losing Calvin Ridley for nothing just to cut him to save $13 million when, as we talked about at the end of last week,
the Titans still have a ton of cap space to work with. It just wouldn't make a ton of sense.
Calvin Ridley may not be the number one wide receiver that we hope that he would be when he was signed by the Titans.
He did go for a thousand yards with Mason Rudolph and Will Levis though.
So it's not like the guy is a bum either.
And right before he got injured last year,
he started to gain some chemistry with Cam Ward.
And I go back to that Arizona Cardinals game
where they were connected on big plays down the field over and over.
And it's like, oh, you see the sparks starting to hit.
The fire hasn't caught yet, but you can see the smoke coming up.
The truth here is having Calvin Ridley on the team
is not a bad thing for the Tennessee Titans.
again, especially without wide receiver being solved.
Calvin Ridley may not be a number one wide receiver,
but I still think he's a low-end number two
or probably more realistically, a high-end number three,
wide receiver.
And now he's not going to have as much pressure on him
to produce and be that number one guy.
You have Wondell Robinson in the slot.
Chim D.K. took a step forward as a rookie.
You hope that Elic Iyo Manor
could take a step forward in year two.
I still expect the Tennessee Titans
to draft a wide.
wide receiver pretty high in the NFL draft on day two at minimum with their second round pick
hopefully or again at minimum their third round pick so here is my point the titans need a number one
wide receiver but there isn't one available to them right now there isn't one that's going to be
available to them realistically in the first round of the draft none of the wide receivers carnell
tates not a number one wide receiver and has never been one at a high level of football
Jordan Tyson I think can be a number one wide receiver
but I've talked about this.
There's no way the Titans are going to take him at number four.
Mackay Lemon is a very, very talented prospect.
I think he's going to be a very good wide receiver,
but the Titans just went out and paid Wondell Robinson.
I'm sorry, but I think that Mackay Lemon is going to be a slot wide receiver
in the NFL.
I just don't think it would make a ton of sense to take Mackay Lemon at number four.
Now, the Titans' last number one wide receiver came in the second round.
It was A.J. Brown.
So it's not like the Titans can't find a number one wide receiver,
but realistically speaking,
they probably won't find a number one wide receiver.
Well, if you can't have a number one alpha wide receiver,
you're better off with having as many good players as you possibly can.
So if you can't have supreme quality,
you might as well have quantity.
That way you're covered if there's injuries.
If Elyke-O-Manor doesn't take a step forward,
if the second-round rookie that you get doesn't become A.J. Brown right away.
Having as many good players as you can makes a ton of sense.
And I go back to the relationship between Brian Daible and Calvin Ridley
who worked together at Alabama in 2017.
And Daible even said it is opening press conference when he got the job.
He was excited to work with Calvin Ridley.
So we've talked about the potential of him getting cut to save money.
The Titans didn't need the money.
They need as much talented wide receiver as they can possibly have.
Keeping Calvin Ridley around makes a ton of sense.
And again, him being willing to take a pay cut here.
It was reported by Paul Kaharski that Calvin Ridley is taking $11 million off of his salary cap hit.
Now, that doesn't mean that Calvin Ridley's giving up $11 million.
It just means that the Titans are moving the money around.
But make no mistake about it, in that report, it was said,
Calvin Ridley took less money to stay with the Titans.
And I think not only from just a roster standpoint, like what we just talked about with the talent wide receiver, the need for depth, all of that.
But what that means for the culture.
Calvin Ridley being willing to take less money because the options were you take less money or we're cutting you.
And Calvin Ridley probably said, well, I'm not going to get as much money as I'm getting paid right now out on the open market.
So what if I take just a little bit less money, help you guys carve out a little bit more cap space,
and then I stick around and work with Cam Ward.
He would only do that if he was happy with the culture,
happy with the environment, happy with Cam Ward,
happy with what Brian Daibble is telling him he's going to do within the offense.
Calvin Ridley is only going to do that if he is bought in for what the Titans are going to do.
And again, it's not just the right now, it's about the future as well.
Now, Calvin Ridley took less money that is guaranteed
and it's being replaced by incentives.
So they're saying, hey, you can get your money back
if you play well.
It's the same thing that the Titans did with Kevin Byard
the year that they traded him.
Before the season started, Rancart Thon redid Kevin Byard's deal
and said, hey, we're going to give you less salary money
but we'll replace that with incentives
so that if you do hit certain numbers,
you're going to get all that money back anyway.
It helps us with the cap.
You still have a chance to get your money,
but, you know, it works best for both parties.
Well, what happened with Kevin Byard that season?
Again, I just told you he was traded.
So when I say it's good for the right now
because depth, buy-in,
keeping Calvin Ridley around at lower money,
which is good for the team,
all of those reasons are good right now.
but in the future
there's two different ways that this can go
either the Tennessee Titans
don't have as good of a season
as we're hoping that they have
and now it's easier to trade Calvin Ridley
at the trade deadline
because his salary is less
and that means a team would have to take on less money
to get him in a trade
his salary being $19 million
even if you
you know
in week 7 you trade him
the team would still have to take on
what, 12, 13 million dollars, two-thirds of his remaining salary, that's a lot of money
to take on during the season. But if you can take $11 million off of the salary,
and now it's only $8 million, and then you're a third through the season,
and now a team can take on Calvin Ridley in a trade for $5 million.
Now not only is he more likely to be traded, but it's going to be easier to trade him
and it's going to be easier to get better value because the thing is, I'm not going to
to give you some great draft pick if I have to pay $15 million.
If I only have to pay $5 million, which is easily absorbable,
I might be willing to give you a better pick.
So it makes Calvin Ridley easily traded.
And I think that that might have been part of Calvin Ridley's calculus as well.
Hey, if things don't go well here, I'm about to turn 32.
I'd like to compete for a championship and go to a contender.
Well, Calvin, if you do this for us,
It's going to make it easier for us to trade you to a contender
and make that more likely and more feasible.
So I think for that reason,
probably had to factor in
Calvin Ridley's decision to take less money as well.
But also, what about this possibility?
Calvin Ridley could stay with the Titans for a couple of years.
He's a low-end wide receiver 2,
high-end wide receiver 3 right now.
Next year, he stays around as that aging veteran
helping the Titans young wide receivers grow,
continuing to be slightly productive,
5 to 700 yards,
still being a good, valued member of the football team.
There is a path here.
It may be the least likely path of them all.
The odds are that Calvin Ridley's traded
or that Calvin Ridley's cut after this season.
But there is a path here where Calvin Ridley ages gracefully
and becomes the Titans veteran receiver
that can help teach the young guys
instead of going out and signing a Tyler Lockett
or something like that,
like the Titans have done in recent years,
going and getting a DeAndre Hopkins or whatever.
The Titans could just have Calvin Ridley on a cheap deal.
Keep him around.
Build that chemistry with Cam Ward.
Continue to show all these young guys
who the Titans are inevitably going to bring into the room
like Chim, like Aya, whoever they draft this year,
whoever they draft next year.
There is a path here where Calvin Ridley stays with Titans
for a couple of years.
And I don't think that that would be a bad thing either.
So whether it's right now and all the benefits for right now
with Calvin Ridley taking a pay cut or whether it's the future benefits
with a trade or sticking around, this was a fantastic move
by the Titans front office by Calvin Ridley as well.
But let's talk about my remaining free agent wish list.

Fans, let's continue today's edition of the Locked On TV.
Titans podcast. Again, we talked about why Calvin Ridley taking a pay cut, showing his commitment
to the Tennessee Titans is great for right now. It's great for the future options as well.
But now I want to talk about my free agent wish list because we're heading into week two of free
agency and I know that the Titans have done a ton already. They brought in like 14 new players,
which is a lot. But the reality is with the coaching change, with the scheme changes on offense
and defense, we're going to see a ton of turnover. I mean, think about it.
14 new players in free agency.
The Titans are going to have 8 to 9 new players with their 9 draft picks.
That's 20 players right there.
I mean, I'm not a math fleet by any means, but 20 inside of 53,
I mean, we're talking about 40 to 45% turnover right there already.
So that's turning over the roster in a major way
and that would lead me to believe that the Tennessee Titans may add even more players
because they're totally trying to flip this roster around
to do what's bets for the new scheme and the new system.
So we look at the offensive side of the ball.
And the Titans have, in my opinion,
with Calvin Ridley's new money added in, $11 million,
the Titans have probably $30 to $40 million of cap space
that they can actually spend.
You're going to see numbers out there like $50, $70, $80 million of cap space.
You've got to pay the draft class.
The Titans like to keep some money in their pocket
during the season. They're not going to spend all of the...
I told you guys this before free agency.
And everybody was saying they don't have the money to trade for Max Crosby.
They don't have the money to sign Trey Hendrickson.
They don't have the... They're not going to use all their cap.
They're going to have more than enough money to do whatever they want to do realistically.
So that's the case now.
But the Titans have, in my opinion, about 30 to 40 million dollars to actually spend if they want to
after the Calvin Ridley cut.
We talked about all of that.
And I broke down all the math and all the numbers.
my last show of last weeks.
Go check that out if you need an update there.
But look at offense,
two positions that still remain wide open
that the Titans need starters at, in my opinion.
Some people out there think Austin Slopman,
Jackson Slater, the starters,
I think that would be asinine.
All right?
I'm literally about to watch film later today on Schlotman and Jackson Slater
so we can talk about where they're at,
and whether they can truly be starting centers,
I don't buy it.
But with that,
guard is going to be easier to find a good option than center.
At right guard, you could bring back Kevin Zeitler.
If you don't bring back Kevin Zeitler,
you could bring in Wyatt Teller.
You could bring in Joel Betonio.
I want Wyatt Teller.
I want to bring back Zeitler.
If they don't do that, I want to bring in Wyatt Teller.
I know that Teller has dealt with some injuries,
but this is one of the best guards of the past five years,
10 years, whatever.
Wyatt Teller's current career pass block win rate
is 96%
96% of his pass blocking snaps
he wins
that's outrageous
all right that is outrageous now
would Wyatt Teller
want to come to Tennessee I think he would
give him a two year deal
$8 to $10 million per season
I think that gets the job done
and Wyatt Teller's 31 years old
where Kevin Zitler is 36
so Zitler is still a good player
He wants to be in Nashville.
He wants to keep his family there.
I'm fine with bringing back Kevin Zitler.
But if you want somebody who can be your starting right guard
for the next two to three seasons,
Wyatt Teller is the way to go.
And that's someone that I've been very high on for quite some times
despite the injuries and the absolute destruction
of the offensive line play in Cleveland last year.
Everything fell off a cliff.
I'm not going to blame some of their good players for that.
So Wyatt Teller would be my number one option at Garland.
but bring back Kevin Zeitler.
Either way,
one of those two has to happen.
If you want to go with Jackson Slater
or Austin Slotman at starting center,
by all means.
Go ahead.
All right, give that a shot.
I think it would be ill-advised,
but I could go in with a level of optimism.
If they try to go with Slater at right guard
and Schloteman at center,
we're in trouble folks
we're in deep deep trouble
because that ain't going to be good enough
you could have one of those guys
starting
and get by
but if both of those guys
are your plan starters
that's not good news
that is not high quality level enough
Slotman is a Corey Levin
he's a good spot starter
can fill in in a moment
but he's not supposed to be your long
long-term starter.
And Jackson Slater
maybe will be a long-term starter.
But he needs to be your fifth best player
on your offensive line
for your offensive line to be any good
right now going into year two.
You can't have him and Shlopeman out there together.
That is bad news.
So go get Zitler,
go get Wyatt Teller,
and then let Slater and Shlopman
battle it out for center.
And then I could live with that.
But the reality is, if I had my way,
the Titans would go get one of Zeitler or Teller,
and they would go get Graham Glasgow
who played next to Kevin Zeitler for years in Detroit.
33 years old, still a good player,
hold down the fort for one year,
teach Jackson Slater everything that you know.
If he gets hurt, Slopman plays,
that's the rot that I would go.
And I mean, even Ethan Posage,
Andre James
bringing back Lloyd Cushingberry on a smaller deal
like I would
I'm just very very nervous
about how and
a lot of you guys want to get in the comments
and tell me about all these rookie centers
you're going to count on a fourth, fifth,
sixth round rookie
to be the starting center
in front of Cam Ward in a critical year too
again I just think that
I just think that's insane
that is an insane plan to have
I don't care how good
you think these rookie centers are.
I don't care.
It's nuts.
It's nuts to think that they're going to come in and be a day one starter
and be good enough to protect Cam Ward.
Insane.
All right.
So, I want to, they have to sign a starter at right guard
and then do what you want at center at that point.
But if I had my way again, I'd sign somebody at both.
Now, here's an interesting rumor
that I'm hearing on the offensive side of the ball.
David and Joku
apparently is getting some interest
from the Tennessee Titans.
Now, that makes you raise your eyebrow
because Gunner Helm,
Daniel Bellinger,
they signed Kyler Granson,
still have David Martin Robinson.
Now, in my opinion,
Brian Dable is going to run heavy
tight-end personnel.
Heavy, not only
because he likes tight-end personnel,
in heavy packages, but because the Titans aren't going to have elite talent at wide receiver,
which means you should lean into the tight end position where you could have a better group.
But in Joku, it's like a starting level player.
So, now I know that a pessimist would say,
well, maybe you're too high on Gunner Helm and they're not as high on Gunner Helm.
I don't buy that. Gunner Helm was awesome last year.
And he got a lot better as a blocker as the season went on.
He's a young ascending player.
You don't take opportunities away from him
to give him the 30-year-old David Njoku.
And Daniel Bellinger is 25.
So it's not like he's an older player.
So I guess I'm just looking at this one
and I'm raising my eyebrow like,
are the Titans being used as leverage here
to get Injoku to a team that can actually give him better opportunities?
Because him coming in his tight-end.
or tight end two pushing Bellinger to tight end three and then Kyler Granson is even going to make the team at that point like
I guess that's it's just hard to understand but I'll say this if they want to bring in David and Joku to make as much talent as they possibly can at the tight end position I'm here for it
I wouldn't hate that move I'd like that move sure David and Joku's a good player he's talented can run good routes can catch the ball in the red zone
can moss people still at this age
and he's not so pass first
that he can't block at all
like he's got good size and ability to him
so I would love to have David Nijoku on the Titans
I just
I don't know why he would want to come to the Tennessee Titans
you know what I mean?
I'm just like that one
the math doesn't math for me on that
but outside of that
at running back I'm going to keep saying it
bring me Brian Robinson
whether you do get Jeremiah Love
and you cut Tony Pollard,
whether you don't get Jeremiah Love
and you keep Tony Pollard,
Brian Robinson makes sense.
They need a downhill physical runner.
They need somebody
who is going to pick up short yardage.
Third and short, goal line.
Tony Pollard and Tadier Spears
are a disgrace in short yardage.
They are not good.
You don't, and I'm sorry,
I'm not betting on Calaisal Mullings
to be a useful guy.
Go get Brian Robinson.
He's still available.
He's still out there.
It still makes a ton of sense
for not only your third running back need,
but the skill set fits perfectly
for what you don't have with Tony Pollard.
And even if they draft Jeremiah Love,
Jeremiah Love isn't a power runner.
He's a home run hitter.
Now he can break some tackles and running the, you know,
inside the tackles and inside, he's not some chump in that regard.
you really want to count on a rookie to run hard and pick up those tough yardage situations?
They need Brian Robinson no matter what they plan to do at running back.
And then finally, with Calvin Ridley taking the pay cut and coming back,
I don't think that it's going to happen.
But I would still be open to signing Joanne Jennings at this point.
It's not going to be as expensive as I initially thought.
The market has dried up a little bit.
He's a big physical wide receiver who could set the tone and help set the culture.
other than Elykoi Manor.
They don't really have a big physical wide receiver.
Again, if you can't get an alpha number one receiver,
then get as much quantity as you possibly can and see what sticks.
So I would still be okay with bringing in Jawan Jennings at this point.
Like, even after the Calvin Ridley thing,
I just think it's less likely after the Calvin Ridley pay cut.
But with that being said, what about the defensive side of the ball?
Where there's only a couple of positions left
where I want to see the Titans make some additions.
but they would be very, very big names to fill them with.

And let's cap off today's edition of the Locked-on Titans podcast.
We talked about why Calvin Ridley's pay cut is so important right now and in the future.
We talked about my remaining wish list on the offensive side of the ball again, Brian Robinson,
David Nizoku, Graham Glasgow, Kevin Zitler, Wyatt Teller, Jawan Jennings would all love to see them get added by the Titans.
They're not going to add all of them.
but, you know, a couple of those names would be great.
On defense, though, there is not as many spots to fill.
The Titans have really put a lot of resources
to the defensive side of the ball early and free agency.
They signed three cornerbacks.
They sign two safeties.
They signed two interior defensive linemen.
They trade and then sign for an edge rusher.
They sign another practice squad level edge rusher.
I mean, they've got three edge rushers,
three interior defensive linemen,
three cornerbacks, two safeties.
The Titans have added a bunch of bodies on defense.
So there aren't as many spots that I have an interesting name to fill there,
but there are still two big spots that I think need to be filled by the Titans.
Number one is linebacker.
I would be shocked if the Titans didn't add a linebacker of some kind.
Whether it's a depth guy who is a little-known name
or whether it's a guy who could be a potential starter.
And if they're looking for a guy who could be a potential starter and be better than a guy like Cody Barton,
I think Bobby O'Karek still makes a ton of sense.
He was cut by the Giants.
He's still out there, 29 years old, good in coverage, long arms,
over the middle of the field.
He worked with Gus Bradley in Indianapolis.
Was just on the Giants with Brian Dable as the head coach.
There's connective tissue.
There's a scheme fit.
there's a need there.
Now the question is,
do they just think Cody Barton can do that?
Cody Barton can play that coverage linebacker role.
We can draft somebody in a good linebacker draft class
and develop them behind Cody Barton,
maybe even take Cody Barton's job.
What if we all talk about Jeremiah Love, the edge rushers?
What if the Titans want sunny styles?
What if they want to get a 6-foot-5,
long arm, freak athlete linebacker
and put them in the middle of the defense?
for the next decade.
I've been against Sunny Stiles,
but I gotta be honest,
I'm warming up to it,
especially if the Titans were able to trade down.
I talked about it on my bonus episode
earlier today. They had a 30
visit, which you only get 30 visits.
They had a 30 visit with Monsor Delane,
the cornerback.
He's not in their range
at number four, right?
So the Titans could be saying,
hey, we need to do some work on some of these guys
if we're able to trade back a little bit.
They could have already had conversations with teams
about potentially trading back.
So if the Titans were to trade back
to 8 or 9, 7, 6,
and take Sonny Stiles,
I couldn't hate that.
So with that being a possibility,
maybe they just don't think they need to add a linebacker.
Maybe they're just not that word about it.
Robert Sala is a linebacker savant at the end of the day.
He gets the best out of linebackers.
Maybe they're like, why would we,
why would we pay a bunch of money or pay extra money
to go get somebody at a position where our head coach
can get the best out of somebody for a lot cheaper?
That would make sense.
But if the Titans do go get a linebacker,
I think Bobby O'Caricay makes a ton of sense.
You can cut Cody Barton, bring in Bobby O'Caricay
and let him play that veteran linebacker role.
and you could still draft a linebacker in the mid-rowns
or on day three and develop him behind him
because Bobby O'Caricay isn't a long-term solution
next to Cedric Gray.
Now, the other spot is obviously Edge.
I talked about it on yesterday's show.
The Titans don't have a speed rusher.
They don't have a designated pass rusher.
They have two big physical power rushers
like Femi and Jermaine Johnson.
You could put John Franklin Myers
or Jeffrey Simmons out on the perimeter for a little bit,
but they don't have that pure speed rusher
that Robert Sala typically has within his defense.
Joey Bosa is still out there,
and I can already hear it now.
Well, I talked to my brother, Nick,
and he said that playing under Robert Sala is fantastic.
I think this team is going to get a lot better, a lot more quick,
blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
I think we have a chance here.
I think we could,
sense. Now I expect him to go to a true contender, not the Titans. But again, the Titans have
30 to 40 million dollars of cap space. Give Joey Bosa 12 million dollars a year, 12
million dollars for the year. See if he can do something. Like, what's it gonna hurt?
You could still draft a pass rusher. You have the ability to do whatever you want.
It's just a one-year deal. Germaine Johnson, I remind you, is still on a one-year deal.
so go out and get Joey Bosa. Why not?
What's the risk?
Other guys who are speed rush types, Hassan Reddick,
but remember Reddick had that weird situation with the Jets when Salah was the coach.
Maybe he doesn't hold that against him because it was more of a front office issue,
but I would be surprised if that didn't rub Robert Salah the wrong way.
You know what I mean?
Is that the kind of guy you want?
Leonard Floyd, another speed rush guy who's still a productive rusher,
could make sense.
Either way, the Titans are, you know, if in their mind,
they're going with one of the three edge rushers at the top of the draft
or in their mind they're going with Sunny Stiles at four,
then there is no reason to make an addition at those spots.
But if they're not quite as certain about that,
I think Bobby O'Karek at linebacker,
Joey Bosa at Edge would be great additions for the Titans.
But let me know what free agents still out there you're most interested in.
