Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Cam Ward 'BIGGEST LOSER' & Carnell Tate BIGGEST WINNER of Tennessee Titans OTAs

Episode Date: June 14, 2026

The Tennessee Titans have complete OTAs and Cam Ward's struggles would make it seem like he is the biggest "loser" of the process. However, Ward's struggles are acceptable and expected. The real loser...s are the people who decided to give up on Ward based on a week of June practice. Carnell Tate was a massive winner, but some are saying that Tate doesn't deserve credit if Ward can't get blame. That is illogical as a rookie wide receiver should not be judged the same as a second-year quarterback in a new system. On offense, other winners include names like Nick Singleton, Chim Dike, Xavier Restrepo & Austin Schlottman, but there are losers as well like the Titans rookie offensive linemen. On defense, Kevin Winston and Marcus Harris are big winners in the secondary, but Femi Oladejo remains a massive loser after missing the entire OTA process.   LOCKED ON TITANS EVERYDAY CLUB: https://lockedontitans.supercast.com/   Subscribe to the TicTacTitans Film Channel:  https://www.youtube.com/@TicTacTitans   TicTacTitans Merchandise: https://dixons-dream.square.site/shop...   Follow Tyler on Twitter @TicTacTitans   Follow the show on Facebook @LockedOnTitansPod   Subscribe to the Locked On Titans YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@LockedOnTitans   Everydayer ClubIf you never miss an episode, it’s time to make it official. Starting point is 00:00:00 If you think Cam Ward is the biggest loser from Tennessee Titans OTAs, I think you are the real loser. I'll explain why on today's edition of Locked on Titans. You are Locked on Titans, your daily Tennessee Titans podcast, part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. Welcome to the Locked on Titans podcast. I am your host, Tyler Rowland Titans fans. Today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast is brought to you by Fandall. The biggest stage in world soccer is here. Let there be goals on Fandle.
Starting point is 00:00:43 Visit fandle.com to get started on today's show. We're going to go over the biggest winners and losers from the Tennessee Titans three weeks of OTAs. We're going to talk about the big loser on defense, which I think is Femi Oladayjo, how the young wide receivers are the big winners on offense. but we got to start with Cam Ward in the conversation that he is the biggest loser from OTAs. And again, if you think that, I think you might be the biggest loser from OTAs. And I'll explain why here. At the end of the day, it's the context that I've been providing throughout last week's OTAs.
Starting point is 00:01:22 Cam Ward is not just going out there and playing full games. They're not just showing up at practice and having a scrimmage all the way through. situationally, and I talked about this last week when Robert Sala talked before practice on Thursday or Tuesday, one of the days before practice, he said, Brian Dable is intentionally trying to make it hard for Cam Ward in the offense. They're doing got to have it periods where it's third and long, it's red zone. You're at the 25, 27 yard line, you've got to score a touchdown, two minute drill, third and long situations.
Starting point is 00:01:59 they are repping the most difficult situations in football games. Because situational football is how you become a winner. So it's not just like, you know, Cam Ward's out there first and 10, first quarter with seven minutes left and he gets to, you know, hit a couple of slants to Elykeo Manor and push the ball down the field and things like that. And look, I am not here to say that he isn't struggling, you know, quote unquote, struggling according to all the reports. Yeah, he could be more accurate.
Starting point is 00:02:30 He could complete more passes. I'm sure he could have played better. But let's not also forget the context. People go, oh, he was 12 for 24. That's not good. Yeah, well, he was basically doing third and long or red zone or, again, strike zone situations where you're at the 25 plus and you've got to throw the end zone to score.
Starting point is 00:02:49 It's two minute drills and you've got to have it. That's why he throws the interception to Kevin Winston on Tuesday. Well, it's fourth and 15 in a red zone drill where you got to throw into the end zone. Would we be mad at cam in real life? If it was fourth and 15 and nobody was open and he just tried to throw it in there to give them a chance like you have to, right?
Starting point is 00:03:11 So I just want everybody to realize that if you're coming out of this and you've lost faith in Cam Ward, whether you're outright off and you don't believe in Cam, whether you're somebody who believed in Cam, but now you're a little worried, you're a little shaking in that, whether you're buying into the nonsense, that he's a bust,
Starting point is 00:03:32 whatever level you're at. Into the boo-boo box with you. Into the boo-boo box. Like, I just think it's absurd. I'm not going to act like Cam Ward's playing well. But when you consider the circumstances, you consider that we've seen him play games before and the special talented things that he's done.
Starting point is 00:03:52 Like, look at his career to this point, including these all-season practices, and it's not that hard to see why he might struggle. Like, he had the worst weapons and the worst coaching in the NFL last year. He may struggle. He's already a rookie quarterback in the NFL, which is hard enough. We'll talk about how hard it is to play quarterback and why that's part of the evaluation here too.
Starting point is 00:04:18 So, to me, it just, you have to, the things that sometimes I get criticized of, not being nuanced enough, hot takery, getting too emotional this. To me, that's what it would take to lose faith in Cam Ward. It would be an emotional, rash response that leaves the logic on the cutting room floor.
Starting point is 00:04:40 Just think about what's going on here and think about the situations in practice and why that might be. And also consider that it might be a good thing that Cam Ward is struggling right now. We want him to struggle now so that he struggles less in the actual games. That's the whole point,
Starting point is 00:04:56 as practice is supposed to be hard. Now, Cam Ward again, the biggest loser, I don't buy that, but I understand that will be the narrative coming out of OTAs that came more. And again, I pushed back on them. But if we look at the other way, the biggest winner is clearly Carnell Tate. Carnal Tate, I mean, he missed one practice, but throughout the multiple weeks of OTAs, remember, we're not just talking about last week.
Starting point is 00:05:20 We're talking about the three out of four week process that was voluntary OTAs with mandatory minicamp. coming next week, this week, right now, I guess, is the way to put it, this upcoming week. And we'll be breaking all that down, so make sure that you're here. But, Cornell Tate has made incredible highlight catches. He's exhibited number one wide receiver aura and persona. He has been a go-to-target for Cam Ward in those critical got-a-habit situations,
Starting point is 00:05:50 third downs, red zones, all the important money-downs. Cam Ward's gone to Cornell Tate to find his most success. Now, I know what's going to happen because it's already happened to me. Got into a conversation with my guy easted freeze from A to Z over the weekend. Because you had a point that you can't say, oh, well, Cornell Tate, big winner, he's been great, we're very excited about Cornell Tate. OTAs matters. And then say, oh, well, Cam Ward didn't play well, OTAs don't matter.
Starting point is 00:06:25 Don't, that's not fair. He called that out. And I get it. I get that. But I think that take lax nuance. I think you 100% can say that I'm excited about Cornell Tate and I'm not worried about Cam Ward.
Starting point is 00:06:42 I think both of those things can be true at the same time. It doesn't take an incredible mental leap to get to that duality. Like, it's this simple. And some of what we talked about with Cam Ward already comes into this. playing quarterback is significantly harder than playing wide receiver. Point blank, period. Point blank period.
Starting point is 00:07:07 Cam Ward has a new system, new scheme, new coaching staff asking new things, new weapons that he's got to get accustomed to. He's got to figure all that out while going through what we just talked about a second ago with the situations and the circumstances, while going through the toughest situation, you can practice in football. Third down, third and long.
Starting point is 00:07:32 Gotta have it. Two minute. Red zone. Strike zone. Like, he's doing the toughest possible stuff. While all this new stuff is going on, he's coming back from an injury. It's only a second year in the NFL
Starting point is 00:07:50 after having again the worst coaching you could have in his first year. Like, yeah, I'm going to grade Kim, differently than Carnell Tate. And let's call it what it is. Wide receiver is one of the easiest positions to transition from college to the pros. Every year, we see rookie wide receivers come out
Starting point is 00:08:15 and make a big time impact. Go for 1,000 yards. This every year, we see rookie wide receivers make immediate impacts around the NFL. Because wide receiver, look, I'm not going to sit here and tell you that transitioning from college to the pros in any realm is easy. That's not what I'm saying. It's not easy to go from college football to pro football and have success.
Starting point is 00:08:40 It's none. But if you rank the positions based on which positions are easiest to transition, wide receiver is up there at the top of the easiest. Running back is by far the easiest. Which is another good point. Like, if a running back was doing really well in OTAs, I think that's real. If a running, let's put it this way,
Starting point is 00:09:02 because there's no pads and stuff. If a running back was doing really bad in OTAs, that is not a good sign. If a wide receiver was dropping every pass and, you know, the routes were off and they couldn't get the connection, couldn't get the feed in, struggling, that's not a good sign.
Starting point is 00:09:19 But like if a quarterback, a rookie quarterback, or a rookie quarterback, or a rookie offensive linemen are struggling, I'm not going to write them off for that. Those are very difficult positions to transition to with quarterback being the absolute hardest. So quarterback, now I know that Cam isn't transitioning from college
Starting point is 00:09:41 or anything like that, but quarterback is just such a significantly more difficult position to play. Add in the circumstances around Cam Ward, and I think it's silly to call him the biggest loser. But with that being said, again, I don't have to grade every single player, on the field on the same scale, nor should I, because context matters, which means that Carnell Tate can be the biggest winner and it is also real.
Starting point is 00:10:08 So, yes, I can not be worried about Cam Ward struggles and be hype and think what Carnell Tate is doing is real right now. Yes, both of those things can happen at the same time. A nuanced, rational person could understand both of those things could be the case. because each player is not graded the same across the board based on their circumstances, their ask, their position. Football is a more complex game than, hey, I'm going to grade and talk. And look, here's another thing.
Starting point is 00:10:41 Like I said, Cam Ward has played real games. So if I'm looking at Cam Ward's evaluation, why would I base the majority of my evaluation of Cam Ward on June OTAs, a week of practice? why would I let a week of June practices mean more to me than the incredible throws and stuff I saw Cam Moore do in real games? Whereas Carnell Tate, Carnot Tate's never played at the NFL level.
Starting point is 00:11:08 Carnot Tate has nothing to evaluate him on other than the OTAs in which he's been great in. So of course, the evaluation in the conversation is going to be different because June OTAs mean a lot less to me for Cam Ward's evaluation, then they do Cornell Tate's right now. Like, doesn't that mean, isn't that simple?
Starting point is 00:11:31 Isn't that a simple thing to understand? I think so. So, you can call Cam Ward the biggest loser if you want, but Carnell Tate is the biggest winner of Tennessee Titans OTAs. And again, I think it's very possible to not be worried about Cam
Starting point is 00:11:46 and also think what Carnell Tate is doing right now and the excitement there is real. I don't think it's hard to do both of those at the same time. But with that being said, let's talk other women. winners and losers, we're going to start on the offensive side of the ball where the young wide receivers made a big first impression. I do want to let you know
Starting point is 00:12:06 that today's episode is brought to you by Fan, Dual Sportsbook. The biggest stage of world soccer is here and every match feels like it has the potential for a memorable moment. One goal can completely change the energy of a game, shift momentum, and alter the outcome

That's a job for Indeed. Sponsored jobs. Let's continue today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast. doing winners and losers from Tennessee Titans OTAs as we move forward into mandatory
Starting point is 00:14:49 mini-camp week, which is a totally different vibe. Again, I'm going to be here to cover mandatory minicamp all week long after each practice. There are two practices open to the media. There should be more players involved. Some of the veterans should finally show up. Make sure that you stay locked in with the number one Tennessee Titans podcast in the world. Locked on Titans. But with that being said, we look at the winners on the office. offensive side of the ball. And like I said, Carnell Tate is the biggest winner from Tennessee Titans OTAs.
Starting point is 00:15:19 What he was able to do, the first impression he was able to make some of the highlight play, some of the connections with Cam Ward. I mean, that is the most exciting possible thing that could have happened in Tennessee Titans OTA. Cam Ward lightened up would have been cool. You know what I mean? But
Starting point is 00:15:34 we've seen Cam Ward making credible throws and have good games and stuff like that. Like we saw that in his rookie year and when you add in, again, the circumstances of this rookie year, that makes those performances that may on paper look mid, per se. You look into the film and it was like, wow, that's pretty impressive from Cam Ward. But again, I don't believe that Cam Ward lighting it up
Starting point is 00:15:55 would have been as exciting for Titans fans as Carnell Tate looking like a true number one wide receiver. Because, and I'm included in this, this is me. I will wear this badge. I was not excited about the Cardell Tate paper. I didn't think they card up going. into the draft, I didn't think that it would have been a good idea to take Carnal Tate at number four. I didn't think he was a true number one wide receiver.
Starting point is 00:16:18 I didn't think he was good enough to warrant a pick that high in the draft. There were a lot of people out there who felt exactly like I did. So for Cardinal Tate to come in from day one and essentially flip everybody immediately, like, I'm a hype about Carnell Tate now. He got me. You know, for him to do that, that is. is the best possible storyline that could have come out of Tennessee Titans OTAs, period. And we got it. So not only is Cardinal Tate the biggest winner, we are big winners for that.
Starting point is 00:16:52 Big losers for having to deal with the Cam Ward conversation, though. So I guess it's a mixed bag. Life deserves balance. But outside of Cardinal Tate, who we already know, the other young wide receivers, Chim D.K., Xavier Restrepo, Tyron Montgomery, Hank Beattie. the undrafted free agent. I just cannot believe I'm over the moon is what I was looking for. I'm so excited.
Starting point is 00:17:21 Titans wide receiver group is excited. I'm hype about the wide receiver group instead of lamb basting it and crying about it, being worried about it. Oh, this team's wide receiver group. It's terrible. It's this. We have an exciting group.
Starting point is 00:17:34 I'm not saying they're going to be one of the best wide receiver groups in the NFL. They can be. I think on paper, it might be a, top 15 wide receiver group, maybe top 10? If Cardo Tate is this guy, it's a top 15 wide receiver group on paper, slim, dunk, no question, we're talking top 10 conversations at that point.
Starting point is 00:17:52 But we can't know that for sure yet, so I'll pump the brakes on that. But, I mean, let's get to training camp. I might hit the gas if he's awesome in training camp too. But again, it's the depth. Jim D.K. was good when he got back out on the field during OTAs. Bomb touchdowns down the field. and I mentioned this before. Jalen Hyatt. I know that you Tennessee Voss fans,
Starting point is 00:18:15 Jalen Hyatt was drafted by Brian Dable to be the vertical slot and be a downfield threat with his speed. So Brian Dable already had a role in his offense that is tailor-made for Chim Deky who's a better player than Jailen Hyatt. Maybe not more talented than Jalen Hyatt, but he's already a better player.
Starting point is 00:18:38 I think it's mental personally. but Jim Dekh has a chance in that vertical role that Brian Dable already has established in his offense. DK has a chance to, yeah, maybe he won't get, you know, 60 catches and, you know, be that kind of guy. But he could be a yards eater. He could be a Christian Watson type downfield, all his catches are downfield type deal. You know, Darnel Moody is a guy I think is like this quite a bit, but D.K. a little bigger. if I remember off the top of my head. But again, Jim D.K.
Starting point is 00:19:13 Coming back in and immediately making a bunch of explosive plays, winner, in my opinion. Xavier Restrepo. X is fighting back, man. I did not have faith. Put me in the boo-boo box. I lost faith in Xavier Restrepo. They put him in that rookie minicamp tryout.
Starting point is 00:19:33 I was like, oh, buddy, this dude is cooked. No. He's been out there making plays. running slot with the second team offense, catching touchdowns, not just with Cam, with others, getting rotated into the first team with Cam and catching touchdowns from Camp.
Starting point is 00:19:52 Remember he had the 27-yard touchdown catch and the strike zone drill in the corner of the end zone. Restrepo, as Jim Wyatt said, is leading the Titans, wide receivers, and catches. All Titans players in catches right now during OTAs. Well, OTAs is over. So he did. He just led all Titans players with catches in OTS. He had 14.
Starting point is 00:20:15 So, Restrepo, man, and I've said this all along with Restrepo, he's never going to be a guy who helps you significantly on special teams. But when Brian Dable has come from the Patriot system and he's seen these slot-wide receivers like a Wes Welker, Danny Amidola, Julian Edelman, man, what's Deion Branch? Go back with Brown,
Starting point is 00:20:39 two-way player for the Patriots back in the early 2000s when they won their first Super Bowl. I forget the guy's first name. I was like, you know, 10 years old or something like that. And I'm not a Patriots fan, obviously. But the guy who played both, he played quarterback, he played slot. Heck, Wondale Robinson.
Starting point is 00:20:55 Brian Dable and Wondale Robinson. There you go. He used Stefan Diggs in the slot a ton in Buffalo. So Brian Dable is going to get the most out of a slot-wide receiver that can get open and catch the football. And guess who can do that? Xavier Estrepo. So I put myself in the boo-boo box
Starting point is 00:21:12 because Restrepo is a big-time winner of OTAs, and I did not think that that was going to be the case. Going back to that rookie minicamp tryout, Tyrone Montgomery had a bomb touchdown catch in that last OTA has been impressing. He's going to have to make plays on special teams, but the 25-year-old out of John Carroll making a big-time impression,
Starting point is 00:21:33 he's been good, and he's been playing with Will Levis. This is one of the cool things about having Will Levis still on the team. I know that Will Levis is not good, and we'll talk about him here in literally just a second. I know Will Levis is not good, but Will Levis is a lot better than a lot of third-string quarterbacks around the NFL or camp arms around the NFL. Think Trevor Simeon was the Titans' third-string quarterback for a good chunk of time. Logan Woodside was the backup quarterback for a long chunk of time. Gross. Will Levis is significantly better than Trevor Simeon, Logan Woodside.
Starting point is 00:22:08 guys like that, you know? So whereas the quarterback play could be so bad that you don't get a look at your wide receivers as much because the quarterback play so bad, Will Levis is significantly better than your normal third-string quarterback. So we get a good look at Tyrone Montgomery and Hank Beattie, the slot guy out of Illinois.
Starting point is 00:22:29 I think Montgomery, maybe not. He'll have to beat out Bryce Oliver. Hank Beattie, though, I expect to be on the Titan's. practice squad. He's the new Mason, Kinsey. In my mind, he is there a practice squad slot receiver. Hopefully, Restrepo can win the two job behind
Starting point is 00:22:47 Wondale Robinson, and then Hank Beattie's on the practice squad as the third stringer. And obviously, other guys can play slot, match it up by whatever, whoever they're playing, but I think that's what you've got to look at. Some quick ones here, Austin Schlotman, he's going to be the starting center. Big winner.
Starting point is 00:23:06 There isn't a true competition there, in my opinion, They'll say that, but Schwatman's going to start at center. So he's a big winner. Jaron Kanick, the rookie, tight end, out of Oklahoma, last pick for the Titans. Been popping up, and again, he is a benefit, benefactor of Will Levis being the third-street quarterback because those dudes have been hooking up quite a bit. The top three running back, Spears Pollard,
Starting point is 00:23:27 remember Robert Salah just called them the Bell Cowbacks. They're not getting replaced any time soon. And Nick Singleton, to get back healthy and be able to participate, I think that's huge. Mitch Trubisky, clearly, the backup quarterback. He's better than Will Levis, knows the system. He looked better than Cam Moore. You know what I mean? So Mitch Trubesky, big time winner on the offensive side of the ball. He is certified in his role with this franchise. The losers on offense, though, Will Levis.
Starting point is 00:23:59 Struggled, had some good throws. Of course, Levis always does, but just too much bad for Will Levis. He's clearly not going to get ahead of Trubisky, probably more likely to be cut than anything at this stage. Hendon Hooker, once Mitch Trubisky came back, Hendon Hooker didn't even get any full team reps. Unless they get rid of Will Levessoon, Hendon Hooker's probably not going to be around for much longer.
Starting point is 00:24:26 Callow Mullings. I think he's been jumped by Nick Singleton in the depth chart already. So not good for Calo Mullings. Dan Moore missed like the whole time. What the heck? don't like that, don't appreciate that. Can't wait to get damn more off this football team after this season. Pat Coogan and Fernando Carmona, again,
Starting point is 00:24:46 I think Coogan has no shot to pass Slotman in training camp before the season, maybe at the end of the season, but definitely not now. And I just think Cordell Voson or Jackson Slater is the real battle at right guard. I don't think Carmona has a real shot this year. But let's move to the defensive side of the ball, where again, I think the real biggest loser of Tennessee Titans over. OTAs is Femiola-Dasia. Starting point is 00:27:38 Femi missed the entire time. Didn't practice in any of the open sessions. Are the Titans practicing Femi when the sessions are closed? We don't know that. And quite frankly, I think it would be silly to assume that. You can't assume that at all.
Starting point is 00:27:55 If he's not out there and participating, especially when all three sessions were open last week, he didn't participate in any of them. He was dressed and just watched. Why? If he's hurt, he should be inside rehabbing. If he's not hurt, he should be playing. I've said it before, I'll say it again.
Starting point is 00:28:14 This is a critical juncture for Femio dejo's development. This time of year is all about individual technique, learning the system, understanding your responsibility, You think it wouldn't help Femiola Dejo to be out there in those defensive line drills with Aaron White Cotton? This is a massive blow to Femiola Dejo's development. And if he doesn't pan out, I will look to this moment right here specifically and say, he missed critical development time going into a second season. Switching schemes.
Starting point is 00:28:44 Another position change. From linebacker to outside linebacker, now he's defensive end. So major concern about Femi, he's the big time loser. I would say Cody Barton, a loser in the process because Anthony Hill is just going to take his spot. Anthony Hill is a big winner for me.
Starting point is 00:29:07 I would also say that Keldrick Falk and Jermaine Johnson are big winners. Falk had multiple sacks, I think three sacks throughout the three weeks of OTAs in drills that are meant to favor the offense. Jermaine Johnson only came back for the last week of OTAs, but made an incredible impression and really impressed folks who were there in attendance.
Starting point is 00:29:29 I would say Solomon Thomas in the absence of Jeffrey Simmons and John Franklin Myers, Solomon Thomas, has been very impressive on the interior defensive line. In the secondary, Marcus Harris, Kevin Winston, big winners. They've been hyped up by the coaching staff. They've made plays. They've made an impression. I would put Josh Williams in there,
Starting point is 00:29:54 and part of that is because he's not Michael Robinson. Michael Robinson has been a big time loser. Yeah, he's had an interception. He's made some plays, but when Cardinal Tate's been out there, he's just treated him like a little kid. And that's not what you want to see if you're Michael Robinson. Now, on the flip side of that, Josh Williams,
Starting point is 00:30:10 haven't heard a lot about Josh Williams being baptized, the big six-foot three quarterback, the Titans signed out of Kansas City. Josh Williams, very interesting that his name hasn't been heard a lot, and I think that's a good thing for a cornerback. So those are my winners and losers from offense and defense. Let me know your winners and losers down below.
Starting point is 00:30:31 Remember tomorrow preview of mandatory mini-camp ahead. But that's going to do it for me today, folks. As always, I am your host, Tyler Rowland, and this was Locked on Titans.
