Cam Ward has been under the microscope since his lackluster performance in the Tennessee Titans first preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers, but Ward bounced back in his first session since with five touchdown passes in Saturday's practice. Ward has to continue building as URGENCY, not panic, is the Titans' current theme. That should resonate with everyone. Some did impress in last Thursday's game though, like Brian Daboll, Jackson Carmona and JC Latham. They weren't alone as others stepped up and showed off their skills as well. Cam Ward bounced back in a major way after his rough game in San Francisco with a five touchdown performance in practice on Saturday, showing the perfect mindset you want for a franchise quarterback. I'm going to dive more into the Tennessee Titans preseason game against the 49ers. I've watched all of the tape. I want to do Titan up for the good performances and tighten down for the performances. I'm more concerned with, but we got to start with Cam Ward's bounce back day at practice on Saturday. He threw five touchdown passes, was absolutely on fire, and that's exactly what you want to see.

Following the Titans mindset of urgency, not panic. And again, this is exactly what you wanted to see from Cam Ward. No doubt about it, the game against San Francisco was a rough performance. We're not going to sugarcoat it in any way. bounces back on Saturday at Train Camp again. According to a report from Jim Wyatt, he was 21 for 25. He had five touchdown passes on the day. Three straight touchdowns in red zone drills.

He had two to Cornell Tate, another one to Elic Ayo Manor. He had a deep touchdown to Elicio Manor in 11 on 11 drills. He had a 20-yard touchdown to Wondell Robinson in the strike zone period, right outside of the 20-yard line. He had a bomb in the scrimmage period to Calvin Ridley. He was getting it around to all of his different targets, making explosive plays, making big time plays, showing confidence, showing that he's not rattled.

And the 21 for 25 numbers shows that he was locked in during this practice, that he was accurate as well, making sure that the ball wasn't hitting the ground. And listen, I know the reality here. The people who don't believe in Cam Ward, the haters out there, the people who want to write him off, call him a bust already.

All of those people are going to say the same thing. Oh, it's practice. You've got to prove it to me in a game. I'm not going to believe it. He's tearing it up practice again. Here we go. But this is exactly the kind of mindset that you want from Cam Ward, not only for his individual play, but for the team.

The team needs to feel that Cam Ward isn't affected. His confidence isn't affected by that poor game. And something that I am going to bring up all the time is that Cam Ward is a gun, slinger. Cam Ward is going to have bad games. He's going to have games where he throws two interceptions and has a fumble and he looks terrible when everybody's mad at him and it's his full. And then he's going to come back the very next week and he's going to throw four touchdowns. He's going to make crazy plays. He's going to run one in. He's going to make a miraculous throw with a defender hanging off of him. He is a gun slinger. It's going to be up and down.

Now that doesn't excuse. I see some people say online, you say gunslinger just to excuse him being inaccurate. No, I'm not. He needs to be more accurate on the layos. The easy throws have to be more accurate. But I have said throughout the entire offseason, Cam's a gunslinger. He's never going to be pinpoint Tom Brady,

Joe Burrow type quarterback. That's not who he's going to be. He's going to be much closer to Caleb Williams quarterback. That's 61, 62, 63% accurate, at his best. But the big plays, the game changing. I can't believe that that guy just made that play. The good has to outweigh the bad.

And when Cam Ward can bounce back and not be affected and be accurate and throw touchdowns and make big plays and hit the bombs and he's just showing that he's not affected by this at all. He knows the type of player he is and he's going to get it back. He's going to get his get back, post. And it's all about a philosophy that I heard Robert Sala say at his press conference on Friday that I think is something that all Titans fans need to hear. And it's urgency, not panic.

I have been annoyed throughout the recent days since the preseason game. If you bring up the secondary being a concern, which we talked about all summer as a potential concern. And now it looks like a concern. Even in this practice, we're talking about a deep bomb to IOM manner, three straight touchdowns in Red Zone,

Wondale, a bomb to Ridley. That doesn't sound great for the secondary. That doesn't sound great for the cornerback room. The Titans wide receivers have been dominating them all the time. Like, that's not a great sign. And then they go out against the, second stringers of the 49ers. No Mike Evans, no Debo Samuel,

no Christian Kirk, no Ricky Pearsall, who I know is hurt, but nonetheless, he's not out there. You're dealing with the Zon Stribling, yes, a highly drafted rookie. But, like, what are we talking about here? You know what I mean? So it's like, if I say that I'm concerned about the secondary, if I say that Cam needs to be more accurate and be less loose with the football, If I say that I'm worried about Dan Moore, if I say that the pass rush may not have winners on it,

then all I hear back is, oh, there's panic. Everybody's been saying panic, panic, panic, panic. That's only, oh, you're a pain. At this point, panic is being used as an insult. It's being used as a, oh, stop panicking for anybody who has concern. and I love what Robert Sala said urgency, not panic. I'm not panicking

when I tell you that the secondary is a concern. I am expressing urgency and the Titans pass rush to be better because the whole entire identity of the defense was, hey, we can overpay a little bit for mid-level cornerbacks because we don't need elite cornerbacks. because we have an elite D-line. We are going to get pressure so fast on the quarterback

that we can have mid-level cornerbacks and they're going to be good cornerbacks because they are getting the assistance of the defensive line. That is how I believe you should build a defense. I agree with that philosophy from Robert Sala. I agree with him. But the pass rush was subpar because it was messing some people and they were doing vanilla stuff.

expose the defensive backs. And it's like, it's not panic to be worried about that. The Cam Ward situation. It's not panic to say Cam has to be a little more accurate. I'm not going to ask for Tom Brady, Joe Burrow, like I said,

Joe Montana. I'm not going to ask for that. But he's got to be better than what it was on Thursday. And that's not panic. That's, the season starts in 4th. weeks. Four weeks from today, the Titans are playing against the Jets. Like Robert Salas said, it's not panic. It's urgency.

Panic has a negative connotation. People are just trying to make you feel bad for having worries. Oh, you're panicking. You're a bad fan. That's what, no. There's a level of urgency that has to, if the Titans come out and lose to the Jets week one, they're going to go 0 and 3. If they come out and beat the Jets week one, they might go three and oh. This team is hanging by a thread. They need confidence. They need something to go their way

to let them know that they're on the right track to be better. So forgive me if I'm just on, oh, it's preseason game. And what are you going to do if it looks the same next week against Seattle? What are you going to do if it looks the same the next week against Chicago?

Just, hey, as long as it's preseason, I'm not going to count any of it. To me, that's insanity. That's feeling your brakes going. out and saying, well, they're not out yet. I don't have to worry about it. Well, you're not going to worry about your brakes until you're driving in your car

and you literally can't break at all. You can feel your brain. It's like the tread on your tire is going bald. It's like your grass growing. You see it growing. You need to cut it. It's going to rain tomorrow. You're not going to be able to cut it tomorrow.

And then it's two days later, the grass is knee high and you're like, man, how did the grass get so high? You know, it's like, come on now. we have to have a level of realism here that the team just isn't going to turn into freaks overnight and be great. We need to see some progress. So again, don't let people out there

try to say, oh, panic, panic, and make you feel bad for having concerns about a team that's won six games and its last 34. It's not panic, it's urgency, and they need to urgently get better and get ready for the year. And I expected to continue this week. Let's go back to the game because I have a lot more thoughts after going through the tape. And there are some incredible performances on the offensive line and not just the starters.

on Saturday, five touchdown passes. It was great to see after his struggles in San Francisco. But now I want to move away from Cam Ward. He sucks up so much of the oxygen here. I want to talk about some of the good stuff I saw on tape in that game against San Francisco. I put out a couple of different projects over on the Tick-Tac Titans film channel,

the Cam Ward breakdown, breakdown on J.C. Latham and Fernando Carmona, who we'll talk about here in just a moment. Before we dive into the Titan Ups from the game, though. Yes, J.C. Latham. But Brendan Crenshaw Dixon. The Titans' undrafted free agent tackle out of Florida last year in year two this year has remade his body He is so by far the third best offensive tackle on this football team. It is not even close. Now, I am still in favor of going out and signing a real swing tackle. Go get Jack Conklin if he's healthy.

Go get Cam Robinson. Taylor Decker probably would only come back to be a starter. So I don't know that he would be a logical solution. But I'm still in favor of getting a veteran offensive tackle in here to be a better swing tackle than Austin Declis. But my God, I have never felt more confident that Brendan Crenshaw Dixon deserves to be on this roster as the development OT4. He was moving bodies. He looked comfortable and fluid and pass protection. Look, do I think that Brendan Crenshaw Dixon can be Dan Moore's replacement after the year?

Do I think I would feel comfortable putting Brendan Crenshaw Dixon in for a couple of starts in the middle of the year if J.C. Latham were to get banged up or something? No, I can't go that far. but I was quite impressed with BCD's ability against the second and third stringers. He looked comfortable and he looked better than those defensive linemen. There were a couple of reps where guys got in his chest, moved him back. He can be a little bit high. He's a tall player, but I just, I know I'm such a nerd. You're leading the tighten-ups with the fourth string offensive.

Yes, I am. I'm leading the tighten ups with Brendan Crenshaw Dixon. He was awesome on tape. And that's what you guys sign up for Locked on Titans for. You get the deep cuts in there. But let's get to the headliners. J.C. Latham and Fernando Carmona. I keep wanting to say Jackson Carmona

because Slater and Fernando and putting them together. But Fernando Carmona is the starting right guard. Hear me when I say, Fernando Carmona is the starting right guard. And this is also why you listen to Locked on Titans because I told you about two weeks ago, hey guys, Fernando Carmona getting some first team reps.

Let's keep an eye on it. Hey guys. Fernando Carmona getting the majority of the first team reps. Hey guys. Fernando Carmona might be in the lead. You know, we've been following it all along. And here he is. And Fernando Carmona was awesome.

I did, again, I did a film breakdown on the Tick-Tac Titans channel. Make sure that you guys go check that out. If you haven't seen that yet on Latham and Fernando Carmona. But Carmona had two bad plays. out of 24, 23, I think it was 28 snaps total, had two bad plays. And it was a run play where he had to drive somebody one-on-one,

and it was Halton, number 93 from San Francisco. That's a player. Grayson Holton, that dude's a violent beast. Okay, San Francisco got a good one right there. But he had a one-on-one block against Holton, and Holton was able to swim through him and ruin the position. and there was another one where it wasn't as simple, it wasn't as easy, it wasn't as important of a block. He got the block initially and the guy kind of slid off of them and was able to help as part of the tackle.

But I would say one, one and a half bad plays out of 25. Passed protection, he looked comfortable passing off stunts with J.C. Latham. They looked like they had good chemistry together. In the run game and double team displacement blocks where him and J.C. Latham are together, double teaming and blowing a guy out of a hole. they were incredible. On pools, Fernando Carmona on a pool

is going to light you up. Coming out, pulling across the formation, kickout block on a power play, he did it twice in the game and he looked good. He is big and strong. And it's interesting

because he is as big as Cordell-Vosson but moves a lot better. And I would say he moves as good as Jackson Slater, if not a little bit better, quite honestly. And he's way bigger and stronger than Jackson Slater. So it's the best of both worlds. You get the size and power of Volson and the mobility of Slater

with just an outright nastiness. He wants to drive you. He wants to pummel you. He wants to beat you alive. And you need that from your interior offensive linemen in that phone booth, in the trench nonstop. I was so impressed

by Fernando Carmon. I could not believe it. I could not believe how good the tape was. And again, the breakdown is over at Tick-Tac Titans to check it out. But Latham as well. Latham looked controlled in his movements. He looked on balance,

which is a big problem I have with J.C. Latham is he can be off balance. I did a full-length 20-minute J.C. Latham film breakdown last week going over his tape from last year. You could check that out as well. You've got a pair of the Locked-on Titans podcast with the Tick-Tac Titans film.

I mean, there's no better combination. And then you get the hits on top of it that we're starting. It's all money right there. But those two guys together have me fired up about the O-line. Again, if Carmona is, and I don't think that Carmona is going to be like, you know, all pro guard or anything like that.

But if he could just be solid, if it could just be sturdy, if he could just be stable, him and Schloteman will not be that bad. Latham takes a jump to become a really good offensive tackle. Pete is a great guard, and Dan Moore is an average tackle. You could have a decent O line with that, and especially in the run game,

because the next tighten up outside the offensive line for me is Brian Dable. Varied run game with inside zone, mid-zone, duo, power, counter, added in easy throws, the ones that Cam missed, but they were easy throws. Tons of RPO, under center play action off of that run game. Motion, formation shifts, there's everything. Now, Brian Dable kept it real vanilla in terms of the play calls. They just ran their base stock play calls,

but you can see what their base stock offense is, and it's very exciting. That's going to be my next film project. I'm going to do Femmy and Falk is going to come out on Monday, and then I'm going to do a Brian Dable and offense and what they saw maybe get to the Robert Sala

defense by the end of the week. It's a lot to do. I will tell you that. But Brian Dable's offense, very impressive already. The wide receivers. Tate was getting open. Wondale Robinson was getting so open on those quick little hitters.

Calvin Ridley did his thing and showed what his value could be as a role player. Elyle-Ele-Manner was getting open and was available. Xavier Restrepo getting all kinds of run. I went back and watched the tape, seeing him work, get some catches. He is open.

He is just constantly getting open. He got open on a crosser. He got open on a quick en route. He is just always getting open. And that matters. I think that Xavier Restrepo is the actual backup. slot-wide receiver right now based on the tape and what I saw and how the packing order

went down. They can say whatever they want on the depth chart. I think X is the starting, or not the starting, the backup slot. Right now I loved what I saw from Robert Salas' defense and the diversity in the fronts. Five-man fronts. Mugged looks with

two linebackers in the A-gaps with six guys, defensive back, creeping up as well. I like the initial variation of the fronts that we got from Salah, even if he ran basic cover three, cover four, cover two, man coverage. Falk and Femmy. Again, I'm going to have a film breakdown on them coming out on Monday afternoon,

probably, maybe Tuesday morning at the latest. But it wasn't perfect, much more impressed with Keldrick Falk, than I was Femiola Dajio. But both of them had good moments. Both of them had tackles across the line of scrimmage, set firm edges, had some glimpses. of pass rush wins. Keldrick Fult had a spin move

that I'm telling you right now, and I know this is hyperbolic. I am admitting to you that this is full-on hyperbole. When Keldrick Falk hit that spin move, I was like, this guy could be the best pass-rrrisher in the NFL. To be that long, that strong, that big, and move with the quickness that he does, He has, I'm not saying he's going to get there,

but he has the ability in his body. He has the natural talent to be the best pass rusher in the NFL. Like, it's crazy the spin move that he put. I can't believe it. So Femian Fulton. Are they going to be starting level edges this year? I don't think so. But I was very, very happy with the progress that I saw.

Anthony Hill, outside of biting on one play action fake an overrun and one-run play. He played 30-some snaps close to something like that. Anthony Hill played very well. Bishop Fitzgerald, I don't think he's going to get a roster spot, but practice squad. Bishop Fitzgerald, the young safety out of USC.

I thought he had some good moments. He wasn't asked to do a ton, but he did everything he was asked to do well. And then Jaylen Holmes, a recently added defensive lineman, number 97, he looked explosive and violent. He did. I think he's going to make it on the D-line,

especially with an injury that's happened on the D-line. We're going to get to the Titan downs, the things I didn't like on tape, and it wasn't necessarily on tape, but the Titans suffered two major injuries with players out for the season as well. It's unfortunate, and we're going to talk about those. Do want to let you know that today's episode

We talked about my Titan ups like Brian Dable's offense, the Titans offensive line, Robert Salah's diverse fronts, Femmy and Falk. But now I want to talk about the Titan downs,

the things that have me concerned after I went back and watched the tape and that includes some of the injuries that came out of the game as well. But other than Cordell Flot kind of getting abused by Dizant Stribbling in one-on-one situations, it wasn't really all that bad. I mean, the Titans' defensive backs outside of the starters, not very good. And again, the Titans' defensive backs

got worked. in the practice on Saturday that the Titans had. But generally speaking outside of Cordell Flot, giving up a bunch of catches to Desan Shribling, you know, it wasn't like Alante Taylor was getting absolutely smoked or anything like that. Marcus Harris wasn't challenged a ton. Cordel Flot was playing off coverage.

And here's a reality. Cordel Flot is a field corner. Cordel Flot is somebody who is not going to be pressed up on the wide receiver a ton. He's going to have some cushion to the wide receiver. and I think there's another reality that needs to be accepted here. And you could call it a tighten down if you want, that's up to you. Robert Sala has said publicly,

as the defensive coordinator of the 49ers, Robert Sala has said this out loud. I do not care about yards. I care about points. Robert Sala is going to give up those little catches. Yeah, it's third and six. cornerback backed up to 12 and he gave up an eight-yard catch and they kept the drive going. Sure.

Robert Salas' philosophy is, I am to prevent points. So I'm just telling you, we can be mad at the cornerbacks for giving up those little conversion things, but Robert Salas' defense is built to tamp down explosive plays. You are not getting over the top of us. You're not beating us deep. You're not getting a 50-yard chunk in the middle of a drive, a 30-yard chunk in the middle of the drive. You're going to have to 8, 10, 6, run for 4, blah, blah,

you're going to have to 10, 11, 12-play drive us to death. And we bet that in that 10-12 play drive, you're going to mess up. Or we're going to get a sack. Or we're going to get a pressure and cause a turnover. Or we're for better or for worse. For richer or for poorer. agree or disagree.

That is his philosophy. So it can frustrate fans all you want, but they're going to give up those little conversions and not get beat deep and give you the underneath. That's what they're going to do. I'm just telling you. But the cornerback certainly need to be better. Now, Cody Barton,

after looking at the tape, he is out of control going after the quarterback and misses a sack. The Titans run a trap zone on defense, basically where Cody Barton is pretending like he's going to blitz. He's up on the line of scrimmage. And then he drops back and darts to the side real quick, hoping to bait the quarterback into throwing a slant right there

and he can jump it. And he was a half step too slow. Now, I've seen other people disagree with me that he wasn't a half step too slow. He was perfect. The quarterback threw the ball behind. That's why he didn't get it. I don't agree with that.

I don't think if the ball was thrown perfectly. he would have picked it off. I think he was a step behind. And I'm looking at Cody Barton and I'm like, oh, if he was a little faster and more violent, he would have sacked that quarterback. Oh, if he was a little quicker and athletic at this stage, he would have intercepted that track play that is designed to create that interception. You can't waste those opportunities. Cody Barton is just not athletic enough right now to start on defense. And I know Anthony Hill is a rookie and it's probably going to take some time.

for him to get up to speed, but I don't really care about that. Cody Barton's not good enough. The cornerbacks and Cody Barton were not good enough. I'm also going to say this. I know that there was no John Franklin Myers. There was no Jacob Martin. But think about what we're talking about here.

We're talking about Jacob Martin. Oh, we didn't have Jacob Martin. We can't judge this pass rush. A 30-year-old who just had his career high last year, five and a half sacks. Yeah, I can't judge the pass rush. Yeah, John Franklin Myers is very important. I agree.

But, guys, I am worried about the pass rush. Femian Falk took good strides, but I don't know that either of them are going to be ready to get consistent pressure on the quarterback this year. I just don't know about that. And watching Jermaine Johnson in that game against the backup offensive tackles, he was good and run defense, which is exactly what I've expected all along, but he doesn't have good enough pass.

rush moves. He's not quick enough. He's just a power rusher wants to get into you. And that can't be your primary edge rusher. So, Jeffrey Simmons and John Franklin Myers, like one of them has to win every single snap.

And that's just going to be hard to do. It's just going to be hard to do. Wrap it up a few things here at the end. Nazi Johnson, who the Titans brought in at cornerback, I think last week, 10 days ago or whatever, suspended the first six games of the year, PEDs, but he says that it was a fertility medicine

because him and his wife were trying to get pregnant. It's complicated. The NFL has a zero tolerance policy for things you put into your body, but you certainly have to feel for him and his wife. He said that they recently dealt with a loss. I certainly know how that is. So, you know, apologies to Nazi Johnson, man. That's a tough time. But again, the NFL is very stringent if you put it in your body.

Johnson put out a tweet that I thought was very mature, basically telling other players, hey man, I thought this wouldn't be a problem. You've got to get everything checked by the NFL. You got to run it through the NFL first. So I thought that was a mature response to tough news for Johnson. For the Titans, it's not like he's like a super good player,

so I don't think it's that big of a difference. And then Jalen Harrell, Titans edge rusher out of Michigan a couple years ago, ACL tear in the game. He's out for the season. That's unfortunate. And Jaron Kanek, the Titans rookie, tight end,

fullback, special teams player played one rep of special teams and Torres Peck Toros Peck Toro. He's out for the season as well. So two major injuries for the Titans, but let's be honest. Is the season

you know, undeniably affected because Jalen Harrell and Jaron Canick? are out for the year? No. We have to be honest. That shouldn't impact the Titans wins or losses.
