Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Cam Ward CAN'T BE DUMB in Tennessee Titans MUST WIN GAME Against New York Jets to Open 2026 Season

Episode Date: September 10, 2026

The Tennessee Titans absolutely must win their season opener against the New York Jets and the biggest thing that will determine who wins will be intelligence. The dumb team will make the big mistake ...and it will decide the matchup between two even teams. Cam Ward will be at the heart of that issue and he will need to play a clean game for the Titans to win. Ward won't be the only one with this responsibility though. Running the ball will still be a primary objective, particularly to the outsides, where the Jets will be vulnerable. On defense, the Titans must tackle and ensure the Jets don't make easy work on the ground and getting pressure on Geno Smith will be critical. LOCKED ON TITANS EVERYDAY CLUB: https://lockedontitans.supercast.com/ Subscribe to the TicTacTitans Film Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@TicTacTitans TicTacTitans Merchandise: https://dixons-dream.square.site/shop... Follow Tyler on Twitter @TicTacTitans Follow the show on Facebook @LockedOnTitansPod Subscribe to the Locked On Titans YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@LockedOnTitans Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!HomeChefFor a limited time, Home Chef is offering my listeners FIFTY PERCENT OFF and free shipping for your first box PLUS free dessert for life! Starting point is 00:00:00 This is a must-win game for the Tennessee Titans, and that means that Cam Ward cannot play dumb football. We'll get ready for the Jets on today's edition of Locked-on Titans. You are Locked-on Titans, your daily Tennessee Titans podcast, part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Welcome to the Locked-on Titans podcast. I am your host, Tyler Rowland Titans fans. Today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast is brought to you by Fandall.
Starting point is 00:00:36 Get $350 in bonus bets guaranteed when you bet $5 for seven days. Join all the action at fandle.com on today's show. Football is back. The Tennessee Titans season is here. The New York Jets are ready to go. We are going to talk about the players to watch on defense and why I think the Titans actually need to blitz Gino Smith early and often. We're going to talk about the players to watch on offense and why it's all about running to the edge.
Starting point is 00:01:06 But we got to start with my prediction for this game and the keys to victory. And I do think the Tennessee Titans win this game. And you know why? Because they must win this game. Make no mistake about it. This is a must win. And I know that some people say it is. Some people say it isn't.
Starting point is 00:01:24 Everybody falls in a different spot. But for me, there is no doubt this is a must win game. The Tennessee Titans are in a different situation and have different circumstances than most typical teams. They've won three games in back-to-back seasons. Change the coaching staff. Change the jerseys. Change the brand. Young quarterback.
Starting point is 00:01:43 New stadium being built. Going up against the Jets. Former team of your new head coach that needs to prove, hey, we got the right guy. He's better than the guy that they got. The new players we got, it means something. The money that's been spent in free agency, the high draft. picks, the trading up, everything surrounding the Tennessee Titans right now, to me, makes it a must win game. Because if you lose at home, week one, to the Jets, a team that is
Starting point is 00:02:12 considered in the same exact tax bracket as you, if you lose to that team, the momentum, the wind in the sails, absolutely gone, everybody upset. You play Philadelphia next week. You lose two games in a row at home, back to back. Who knows how close that Philadelphia game is. and things already feel like nothing changed. This team is still as bad as last year. The coaching change hasn't mattered. The players haven't mattered. We're cursed.
Starting point is 00:02:40 All the fans are going to be saying that kind of stuff, and you know that the players are going to feel it. And maybe some players won't hear the noise and don't care about that, but some players will hear. And it will affect some players. And whether it's hearing it online from fans or just in the building, the cafeteria people, the valets, the maintenance people, the cleaning people,
Starting point is 00:03:04 the people in the cafeteria, the people in the ticket office, the people that greet you in the morning, walking around like everybody in the building feels it when the team is losing. And all of those bad memories from the last couple of years and those bad feelings, they're hidden behind a shaky gate right now. We're holding them back right now. We can feel it. We're holding it back. And if they lose to the jets,
Starting point is 00:03:27 to open the season. I'm telling you, it's going to be an outright meltdown and it won't just be the fans. Players will feel that way too, especially players that have been here throughout the last couple of years. They're not madden players
Starting point is 00:03:45 that have no feelings. So they've got to win this game. This is an immediate measuring stick. They have to win. And I think if they win this game, they could win six, seven, maybe eight at-best games, if they lose this game, they'll win three, four, or five games.
Starting point is 00:04:06 This is the game, the line in the sand, because it's not just about this individual game on the winner loss column. It is about the momentum and the feelings that they'll have. And I think they're going to lose a couple of games here early. You got Baltimore, you got Houston, you got Philly. Having that win in the pocketbook and being like, all right, I know that we're losing some games right now, but we beat the Jets, a team that we were supposed to be,
Starting point is 00:04:30 a team that we're better than. Now let's get to Indy, let's get to Cleveland. We beat those teams. Now we're like, all right, we're not ready to play with Baltimore and Philly and Houston quite yet, but we're building. We're building. And then by the back half of the season, maybe you beat Detroit, you beat Pittsburgh,
Starting point is 00:04:47 you beat Houston, you beat Jacksonville, and you tell yourself, oh, okay, now we are ready to play with these teams. And then by the time we get to next year, it's okay, now we're ready to contend for the playoffs and contend for the division, and we're on our way up. That is the progression that we all want to see, and I don't know if that is possible
Starting point is 00:05:04 if they don't beat the Jets. Because then they may go on a big losing streak. They don't have confidence, and it gets ugly. Like, we can't afford it. It's a must win. Now, I do think they win. The Tennessee Titans win this game. They cannot afford to lose it.
Starting point is 00:05:23 16 to 13. I think it is going to be an ugly game. I think it is going to be a defensive game. And I think that the Titans, ultimately with Joey Sly, find a way to win the game. And that's how we get into my keys to victory. And we start with number one, key to victory. Don't be dumb.
Starting point is 00:05:43 And this starts with Cam Ward. Don't be dumb. Starts with Cam Ward. And it encompasses mental mistakes, penalties, turnovers, blunders, errors. Think pre-snap penalties. operational stuff, calling a bad time out, not throwing the ball away, not getting out of bounds. Like week one at Denver last year, taking bad sacks to knock you out a field goal range.
Starting point is 00:06:09 Those sorts of mental mistakes will be so critical in a low-scoring, ugly game. Cam Ward cannot be the bozo quarterback that makes the mistakes. Can't drop a ball out of his hands or, you know, have a weird pass that comes out wrong because he's hesitating or, you know, like misses a wide open dude because he's just got the yips. Like you got to be the calm team. You got to be the poised team. You got to be the team that doesn't freak out under pressure. You're at home.
Starting point is 00:06:39 You can't be the stupid team that fumbles a kickoff that muffs a punt, that roughs a kicker that has one of those Jeffrey Simmons unsportsman-like penalties where you hit the snapper. You know what I mean? You cannot be the team that. that makes the dumb mistake to ruin the game. The Titans have to grow up, they have to be mature, and the reason that hiring Robert Sala was met with such applause
Starting point is 00:07:06 is because he is a professional coach that's done it before and should have his team ready to go for that stuff. Wins and loss would tell you, Robert Sala is a better coach than Aaron Glenn. So I want to see a team that's better prepared mentally to win the game. Do not be the dumb team. because the Titans and the Jets have made a career, made a franchise out of being the dumb team.
Starting point is 00:07:31 Don't be the dumb team. If the Titans are the less dumb team, and that starts with Cam Ward making stupid mistakes, if they are the less dumb team and Cam Ward is just a game manager, they will win the game. I believe that. It's a must win. They will win.
Starting point is 00:07:47 Don't be dumb. 16, 13. My second key to victory, though, is you got to win the run game. And I mean both sides. The Titans need to run the ball better than the Jets, and they need to stop the run. Because both offenses, I think, are going to struggle early on. And running the ball is going to be a cheat code for teams
Starting point is 00:08:09 to sustain drives and get into field goal range and be able to get points on the board. Because I think both offenses are going to struggle in third and long, and whichever team can create more third and longs, probably win the game. And how do you prevent third and long, run the football. So whichever team is able to get an advantage on the ground when passing offenses might be stuck in the mud,
Starting point is 00:08:34 that's the team that I think is going to have an advantage. And we're going to talk more about how the Titans can create that advantage in the run game. Specific runs. I want to see the Titans lean on to challenge the Jets in our game plan segment for offense here in just a moment. But my final key to victory, special teams. My guy John Buchko from Locked on Jets was on the crossover show yesterday.
Starting point is 00:08:57 Make sure you guys check that out. And he talked about how the Jets special teams was really good last year. But they had Nick Fulk at Kicker. And like the Titans, they let Nick Fult go. And now they're having a crisis at Kicker. Well, the Titans aren't. The Titans are set at Kicker.
Starting point is 00:09:14 They have an all-pro returner and ChimDK. They have who I think is the best special teams coach in the NFL and Bones Fossil. And the Jets have a good special teams unit as well outside of their kicker. Their coverage units and things like that, very, very good. So I would tell you that special teams battle might be pretty close and whoever makes the play and takes the edge in special teams field position,
Starting point is 00:09:40 a return potentially in a low scoring game, whoever makes that play block a field goal, block a punt, set up field position, get your team points. Whoever makes that kind of special play on special teams will be the team that wins because it's going to be a close, ugly game. Again, so it all kind of works together. The Titans need to not be stupid and make the bad mistake. They need to win the run game battle
Starting point is 00:10:02 and keep their quarterback out of third and long situations. And they need to make a play on special teams. Like that, they got to win that battle. So those are the keys to victory for the Titans in a must-win game against the Jets that I think they win 16 to 13. Let me know your prediction for this game down below
Starting point is 00:10:22 the Titans got to win it, folks. So curious to see what you guys have to say. But with that in mind, how can the Titans win this game? We're going to talk about what they need to do on offense. And they need to run, but they need to run outside. Do you want to let you know that today's episode is brought to you by Udo. That's O-D-O-O-U-O. Running a business shouldn't feel like you're trying to connect a bunch of systems

That's where Odu comes in. Odu is an all-in-one business management software that brings every part of your business together in one powerful platform from sales to accounting, inventory and marketing. Starting point is 00:11:25 That's true in sports, just like it is in business. We're talking about how the Titans can all work towards the same goal right now. You know why? Starting point is 00:12:21 surprises and more every week. Just check the Fandle app to see what's waiting for you. And right now, you can go on there, maybe look at the Titans. One and a half point favorites at home. That's not giving up a lot of points. I got the Titans winning 16 to 13. So I think that they'll cover one and a half
Starting point is 00:12:38 or let me know what you guys think. But make sure that you make this the most rewarding season ever with Fandle. Visit fandle.com. Once again, that's fandle.com to get started. Titans fans, let's continue today's edition of the Locked-on Titans podcast. It's a football Friday, baby, game plan episode. We have finally made it.
Starting point is 00:13:16 The Titans play the Jets. We talked about the keys to victory, why it's a must-win game. My prediction for the game, 16 to 13 Titans win. Now I want to dive into what the Titans have to do on the offensive side of the ball to win this game. And I have some specific plays in specific direction that the Titans need to go in the run game.
Starting point is 00:13:36 The Tennessee Titans must. run the football. That is the number one key on the offensive side of the ball, but they need to run to the outside. So I'm thinking particular plays. Outside zone. Thank classic Derek Henry Titans. Outside zone. Brian Dable has a varied run scheme. He's got zone runs. He's got power runs. He's got gap, man, whatever you need. He's got it in there. So I want to go to the outside with outside zone. I want to go to the outside. with power, which is where you see like Peter Skoronsky pulling across to the other side of the formation.
Starting point is 00:14:14 Look for Peter Skoronsky pulling, usually a tight end with him, running power to the outside where Skoronsky is going to kick out the defensive end, or he's going to come up through the hole and hit up to a linebacker, power and counter back and forth to get to the edge there. I also think Pinpool Suites.
Starting point is 00:14:30 Do you remember Tony Pollard 65-yard touchdown against the Cleveland Browns last year? I did a breakdown of that on the Tick-Tac Titans film channel, which if you aren't subscribed there, you better get over to Tick-Tac Titans on YouTube and subscribe because I'm breaking down the film
Starting point is 00:14:46 all year long of what's actually happening out on the field as we have conversations here on Locked on Titans. But it was a pin pool, outside sweep, where the outside guys like the tight end, the wide receiver, stuff like that, they pinned people inside. And then the Titans pulled the offensive tackle, the guard, the center, guys like that,
Starting point is 00:15:09 pulled a couple of all-fetchers, offensive linemen out to the perimeter, you pin inside, then you pull outside on a sweet play, and you get to the perimeter with offensive linemen leading the way. That's what I want to see the Titans do against the New York Jets. You know why? Because I think the Jets are weak on the edge. I think the Jets run defenders outside are not good. And if Joseph Asai, who, you know, even Jets folks, are not expecting Joseph Asai to play,
Starting point is 00:15:36 who is their new outside linebacker, if Joseph Asai doesn't play, and we're talking about Will McDonald, who is a speed rusher, who's never necessarily been a guy who's incredible against the run. We're talking about David Bailey, who I think is going to be a problem for the Titans' offensive line and pass rush. But in run defense, that was an area of concern for him coming out of college. That was an area we looked at like, huh, Kingsley and I'm Barre is a decent backup player, but he's a backup for a reason, a guy they signed from Green Bay,
Starting point is 00:16:04 who I thought the Titans could bring in his potential depth. I liked him as a potential option, but he goes to the Jets. But at the end of the day, he's not a starting edge rusher for a reason. So outside of that, their real run-stopping ability is inside. They have Tavondre sweat. We know about big meatloaf inside. They have Harrison Phillips. They have David On Yamada, who is, that's beef on the interior.
Starting point is 00:16:27 I'm not going to challenge them with inside runs. I'm not going to run duo and inside zone non-stop against those big cloggers who could take up two guys, especially when I have Peter Skoranski, who is not a power offensive lineman. is not a power offensive lineman, and then Austin Schlotman, who was a smaller guy himself, that's not going to be my game plan. I want to use my athleticism.
Starting point is 00:16:50 I want to get out on the perimeter. I want to make David Bailey, Will McDonald, Kingsley and Iqbore, and then their cornerbacks, Jarvis Brownlee, DeAngelo Ponds, who may or may not play, Brandon Stevens, Azare Thomas. Are you guys ready to tackle
Starting point is 00:17:10 because week one of the NFL season, not everybody's prepared for the level of physicality. It's the first game of the year. And if the Titans are the more physical football team and they make those DBs and those edge rushers play against the run, I think they're going to just gash them. And that's why I think
Starting point is 00:17:33 Tony Pollard is my number one player to watch on offense. I think Tony Pollard is about to have a massive week. I think Tony Pollard has 120 total yards touchdown. I think Tony Pollard's going to have a great game in this one. And it's going to be those outside runs and he's going to run through arm tackles of DBs who aren't ready for the physicality yet and he's going to have some chunk plays.
Starting point is 00:17:59 And I think the Titans are going to be able to get out on the perimeter. And I also think that some of those power plays that I was talking about earlier, where you have a guard pulling over, that allows J.C. Latham and Fernando Carmona to downblock on these big, heavy, defensive tackles. And if you're going to get movement on those big, heavy, beefy, defensive tackles of the Jets, you're going to have to do it on a double team.
Starting point is 00:18:21 So it all works out perfectly. If I'm the Titans, I am attacking the outside. But moving away from the run game, where we talk about sweet, counter, power, pinpool, and outside zone. In the passing game, Cam Ward needs to be a game manager. I really do think that the Titans need to be conservative with the game plan from a passing standpoint. He needs to hit on some of those throws that he missed against San Francisco, some of those easy quick outs for five yards, some of those little bubble screens.
Starting point is 00:18:53 Because I think those little short, easy passes are going to be absolutely critical to keeping the chains moving. Again, I think it's going to be ugly. I think teams are just going to say, hey, we're not going to give up explosive plays. Again, you want to challenge these guys and make them tackle in week one. so I would dedicate myself to the short passing game early on, not try to challenge too far downfield quickly. I think when you take shots, bring Cornell Tate into the slot. Let him go against Jarvis Brownlee Jr. DeAngelo Ponds,
Starting point is 00:19:20 who he has a size advantage on, and let him take them vertical against man coverage. That's what I would do if I can get that opportunity. But for the most part, I think the Titans need to work the middle of the field in the short passing game. And that's why I think Wondale Robinson is going to have a big game.
Starting point is 00:19:40 We've been talking about how Wondale Robinson is going to catch a million passes this year. So why would I expect anything else? I think Wondale Robinson has 60, 70 yards, six or seven catches, a couple of first downs, and has a very Wondale Robinson-s game. And that allows the Titans to get over midfield,
Starting point is 00:20:00 get in sly range, and get more points on the board than the Jets are able to get. So I think Wondell Robinson is critical. In this game, he's a player to watch for me. And then the final guy is J.C. Latham. So Tony Pollard, outside runs, Wondell Robinson, over the middle of the field against the Jets linebackers and D.Bs, and then J.C. Latham.
Starting point is 00:20:25 David Bailey, I think, has the potential to wreck this game. I've said two and a half sacks is what I think David Bailey might do in this game. The real problem I have is J. C. Latham struggles with speed. And when people beat him to the edge with speed, he starts to overset, and then it's easy to beat him inside. It's all over the tape.
Starting point is 00:20:49 I did a J.C. Latham breakdown before the preseason started on, is he good or not? And I went over his good play after the by week and his deficiencies that are still on the tape, even after the buy week. and that is a problem. And David Bailey's best move, if you remember David Bailey,
Starting point is 00:21:09 when we scouted him, he has a nasty inside spin move. So if David Bailey beats J.C. Latham with speed for a sack, early in the game, first two drives, I think we're in for trouble. But if Latham can go the first couple of drives and shut down the speed and not feel a laxiefer.
Starting point is 00:21:35 of confidence and not feel like, oh, no, I got to deal with this speed demon all day. Then he has a chance to do it. He has a chance to not let him wreck the game. But J.C. Latham against David Bailey will be a massive matchup for this football game. But with that being set, it's time to move to the defensive side of the ball where I know Robert Salas is known for his four-man rushes. I think it's time to blitz Gino Smith. Matt Derry here from the Lockdown Lions podcast.
Starting point is 00:22:04 You know, life insurance is one of those things. You don't really think about until you have a reason to. Hit the link down below in the description to join the Locked-on Titans every day or club. Now, with that being said, on the defensive side of the ball,
Starting point is 00:25:39 I think the Titans got a blitz. I know that Robert Sala again is known for these wide, four-man fronts, he only wants to rush four, drop seven back in coverage, take the windows away, and that's what they're going to be expecting. We know who Robert Sala is. We know what he wants to do. No, that's not how I'm playing it. If I'm the Titans, I'm heating an old quarterback up early.
Starting point is 00:26:06 I'm coming after Gino Smith. I'm letting him know, hey, you're old. I don't care. We're going to hit you. You're going to take a beating today playing against this defensive line. You're going to get hit all day long, And what he's going to do is he's going to start getting rid of the ball a little early. He's going to start fading back.
Starting point is 00:26:24 He's going to start fading away from the pressure. And what has Gino Smith done very much so over the last couple of years? Turn the ball over. Heat Gino Smith up early and then fake the pressure late. Don't bluff early. Go after it. Let him know we are coming for you. We're not going to do the Robert Sala four-man front, wide rush.
Starting point is 00:26:48 drop back no. And why I want to do that is, it's week one. Let's test your response to pressure. Are you ready? Did you practice that? How many real pressure looks did you get during the off season and the preseason to be ready? Does Gino Smith know all the calls? Do all the offensive linemen know all the calls? How do they respond to certain look, certain gap threats? Are you well versed on all that in week one? Are you prepared for? Frank Reich, did you get your group prepared to have all the answers for all the different things? Don't make it easy on them and line up in four-man fronts and drop back and just let them have their way with just little stunts and loops and stuff. No, crowd the gaps, show exotic fronts, go against your career-long tendencies in week one and have them in a place where they were not prepared for this.
Starting point is 00:27:40 They didn't spend a lot of time on this. They weren't ready. That's what I'm doing. I'm stress testing the New York Jets response to pressure right away. And Gino Smith is an old quarterback again. He'll wilt under the hits and the physicality. I know it. That would be my plan.
Starting point is 00:27:58 So with that in mind, the only other thing I want to say about defense is they have to tackle. It's week one. Guys are not ready for the level of physicality. The Titans have been touting how tough and difficult their training camp has been. They should be physically more ready than the New York Jets for the physical pounding of this game, tackling,
Starting point is 00:28:25 blocking. So I expect if the Titans are the more physical team, the Jets will wither at the end of the game and the Titans will win. And that's how if the Titans can do that, they win this game 23 to 13 instead of 16 to 13. That's how they blow it out, is if they are the more physical team because the Jets will wither at the end and be tired of the pounding and they weren't used to it and the Titans were.
Starting point is 00:28:53 That's what will make a difference. So watch that in the last 10 minutes of the fourth quarter. If the Jets look tired, if the Titans look strong, that'll tell us a lot about that training camp program that the Titans had. But my players to watch on defense, Alante Taylor against Garrett Wilson. I would put Alante Taylor on Garrett Wilson and tell him to harass him all day long
Starting point is 00:29:19 because Garrett Wilson is the real threat. Let Cordell Flot play field, play back off. Adonai Mitchell is like a deep threat type. Just don't let Adonai Mitchell beat you deep. Alante Taylor, you press Garrett Wilson and make it difficult on him and don't just let him eat up little five, six, seven yard stuff. So we have a safety and flock to keep Mitchell from going deep.
Starting point is 00:29:43 we let Alante Taylor take care of Garrett Wilson. I'll let everybody else take care of everybody else. And I'll feel all right. Kevin Winston, again, is a big part of that. The Titans cannot give up explosive plays down the field. You can't make it easy for the Jets. Do not let them get X plays. Robert Salas style is to earn it, and I want to blitz them.
Starting point is 00:30:08 But that's going to put pressure on Kevin Winston in the back end to not give up plays down the field. I'm going to need a big game from Kevin Winston to be able to execute this game plan and his range in the back end and his physicality in the back end to take things away, bang, bang plays down the field. Big game coming for Kevin Winston.
Starting point is 00:30:28 Finally, Jeffrey Simmons. Because when the Titans are done blitzing and they're showing pressure and they're bluffing and they're faking the blitz, when everybody backs off, Jeff has to take advantage and bring them home. Bring them home, Jeffrey Simmons. Jeff needs to make a big play at the end of the game to seal this one.
Starting point is 00:30:52 It will be required and he'll have an opportunity to do it. Time to bring us home. But that's going to do it for today's game plan edition. We are so back. Titans win 16 to 13, must win game, keys to victory, game plan points, players to watch, all of that and more. Thank you all so much for turning in again.
Starting point is 00:31:12 I'll be here after the game on Sunday. Check out the Titans hit. I'm going to have injury report stuff on Friday. More information, more conversation, so much stuff. We're about to have a good season. I cannot wait. That's going to do it for me today, though, folks. As always, I am your host, Tyler Rowland, and this was locked on Titans.
