Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Cam Ward DOMINATES Tennessee Titans Mini-Camp with ELITE PERFORMANCE & Rookie Receiving SHOWING OUT

Episode Date: June 10, 2025

Cam Ward put on a STELLAR PERFORMANCE on Day 1 of Tennessee Titans Mandatory Mini-Camp. Ward threw an early interception, but then dominated the rest of practice, not missing a single throw. This is E...XACTLY what you want to see from your young QB. Catching those passes more often than not were his rookie teammates as Ward connected with Xavier Restrepo, Gunnar Helm and Elic Ayomanor during the onslaught and all the rookies seem to be showing out. Finally, Jeffery Simmons was not only participating, but back out on the field making noise. Simmons' presence makes the entire team better and it is good to have him back out on the field. Subscribe to the TicTacTitans Film Channel:https://www.youtube.com/@TicTacTitans TicTacTitans Merchandise: https://dixons-dream.square.site/shop/tictactitans-gear/C3AAPNWXSXA6SBYG3USV2I7R?page=1&limit=30&sort_by=category_order&sort_order=asc Follow Tyler on Twitter @TicTacTitans Follow the show on Facebook @LockedOnTitansPod Subscribe to the Locked On Titans YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/c/LockedOnTitans/videos Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!GametimeDownload the Gametime app, create an account, and use code LOCKEDONNFLfor $20 off your first purchase. Before I dive into all of it, do want to thank you for making Locked On Titans your first listen

If you aren't an everydayer, you need to be one. The Tennessee Titans have two more days of mandatory mini camp and I'm going to be breaking down everything you
Starting point is 00:01:38 need to know every single night, including today where where we gotta talk about Cam Ward going absolutely insane. So Cam Ward goes 20 for 21 at practice, according to Jim Wyatt from Tennessee Titans dot com. 20 for 21. What an elite performance of getting the ball to his receivers, getting it out on time, all of that. Absolutely fantastic stuff. Absolutely great. But what makes the performance even better? What makes the performance even better than just 20 for 21? You hear that? That's incredible. Cam Ward went 20 for 21. Absolutely insane. But, but the fact that on his fourth throw of the day, in seven on sevens, Cam Ward threw an interception to Cody Barton.
Starting point is 00:02:36 He throws the interception to Cody Barton in seven on seven, trying to force it into David Martin Robinson across the middle of the field, isn't able to get it in, interception, trying to force it into David Martin Robinson across the middle of the field, isn't able to get it in, interception, it happens. But what do you do after that? How do you bounce back? That's the question. What happens next? Well, after the interception, Ken Ward goes 18 for 18! 18 straight completions after the interception. He goes 14 for 14 during 7 on 7s. Incredible. Absolutely incredible to bounce back.
Starting point is 00:03:16 Look, is Ken Ward going to be perfect the entire training camp? Is everything going to go great for him the entire time? Is that ever going to be the case? No. There are going to be mistakes made along the way. This is what we talked about last week. Did Cam Ward have a fantastic practice? Did he have a great start to that practice last week? No. But he was able to bounce back a bunch of completions in a row and then today, to do what he did today? Again, there are going to be issues, there are going to be problems that arise.
Starting point is 00:03:48 It's how you bounce back from them. Can you stay poised? And remember, Brian Callahan talked about the mental makeup and how important that is for his quarterback and how important that is you're looking for the neck up at this position. That's because when bad things happen, are you able to rebound? Are you able to bounce back? And for Cam Ward to throw the pig and then have his best practice as a Tennessee Titan yet. And let me remind you, this is the most intense practice that Cam Ward has been a part of yet either. Mandatory mini camp is a different level. Mandatory mini camp is a total different intensity.
Starting point is 00:04:32 Okay, so for Cam Ward to have his best performance, not only in the most intense practice that the Titans have had so far this summer, but to do it after throwing an interception. I mean 18 of 18 to finish practice 14 of 14 and 11 on 11. Look, you could say seven on seven is absolutely meant seven on seven is absolutely meant to help the offense like that is going to be an offense slanted offense lean drill forever. But 11 on 11 team 11 on 11 team, 11 on 11 team, I mean, 11 on 11 team drills, that's very difficult. That is not going to be ass slanted to the offense now with no viable pass rush, the quarterback can't get hit, all of that taken into account. Obviously, that's going to be a factor. But nonetheless, rookie quarterback struggles
Starting point is 00:05:26 early on, bounces back from last week showing, biggest practice so far absolutely dominates. And he was passing the love around, okay? You had Chim Dike getting a pass from Cam Ward on an out breaking route. You have Chigga Conquo on a swing route. You have Gunnar Helm on a seam route. You have Ellic Io Manor on an out route. You have Xavier Restrepo with multiple catches over the middle of the field. You have a completion of Van Jefferson.
Starting point is 00:06:00 Like you're passing it around. Cam Ward is not just locking in on one guy, this guy. It doesn't matter what the circumstances are. Cam Ward is delivering. So again, I have to hammer this home because people always wanna rain on the parade, of course. People always wanna rain on the parade. But, but what if Cam Ward struggled mightily out there?
Starting point is 00:06:24 Those same exact people would be lining up right here saying, he's a boss, see, I told you, But what if Ken Ward struggled mightily out there? Those same exact people would be lining up right here saying, he's a boss, see, I told you, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. But when Ken Ward does excellent practice, lights it up, 20 for 21, 18 straight completions to finish the practice, 14 for 14 in all of his team activities. Like, I'm sorry, how am I, am I not supposed to be excited?
Starting point is 00:06:45 Am I not supposed to be excited about that? Bull crap, I am going to be hype about that. We should be hype about, so don't let anybody rain on your parade. Are you going to guarantee yourself an all-pro year? Are you guaranteed to be the franchise savior because you had a great practice and mandatory mini camp? Obviously, no.
Starting point is 00:07:04 But man, I would much rather hear about Cam Ward slicing and dicing the defense up, connecting to multiple different people, bouncing back from his first interception, and lighting it up. Would I rather hear that all day, every day, twice on Sunday? And hopefully, we see a lot of Cam Ward balling out on Sundays as well. But again, so excited, and you add in not only the on-field stuff, not only completing it to all these different receivers, going crazy in practice, but talking trash to Jeffrey Simmons.
Starting point is 00:07:38 Big Jeff back in attendance, back out on the field, that's exciting, and he's barking at Cam Ward, and Cam Ward has given it right back not back and down. Love to see that Cam Ward got the most reps by far out there based on the rotations that you see which is exactly what we were hoping for. Again does this mean that success is guaranteed? Does this mean that all the rookies will hit and cam ward's the savior and yes it does no All jokes aside. No it doesn't But I will take these kind of reports in this sort of progress and him checking every box and cam ward doing everything possible I will take that
Starting point is 00:08:21 Over the opposite all day and when you're out on the field and you're barking back at Jeffrey Simmons who has been the dominant alpha in this locker room for years, now you're checking the boxes on the field, you're checking the boxes with your teammates and personality stuff, you're checking the boxes off the field. Again, doesn't guarantee anything, but what more could you ask for from Cam Ward?
Starting point is 00:08:46 Are you not entertained? And what I love the most is he is making those connections I was hoping for with his rookie pass catchers and it's the rookies who are stealing the show. And mandatory mini camp again, Cam Ward went absolutely insane through an interception to Cody Barton early in seven on seven and bounced back with 18 straight completions, 14 of 14 and teamwork going 20 for 21 on the day. Does it guarantee regular season wins? No, but I love seeing Cam Ward go out there and check all the boxes. But one thing that I think people need to think about when they hear Cam Ward's stats. You know what I thought about when I heard Cam Ward went 20 for 21, 14 of 14 in team, and 18 straight to finish practice?
Starting point is 00:11:18 People aren't dropping the ball. Right? That's what I thought. That means that every single pass, every single pass that Cam Ward threw out of 21 passes got caught. Now Cody Barton caught one of those, but every single pass that Cam Ward threw got caught. That is a great sign. That shows that the new pass catchers that the Titans have brought in are reliable, they are going to catch the football. Look, with Chim Dike and Elec Iow Manor, there are
Starting point is 00:11:51 some questions about drops and wanting to clean that up and making sure that there are no issues there. So the fact that the ball wasn't hitting the ground, that is massive for the Tennessee Titans. And let's talk about these rookie pass catchers. They are going nuts. Every single practice, it's the rookie pass catchers who are showing up and showing out and catching the eye of people watching practice. Every report that you see, all these rookies, the rookies, this guy, that guy, it may not even be like, hey, look, it's the rookies. Just the reports themselves, Iow Manor did this did this and D.K. did this and Helmcock this pass and... Everywhere you look, it's the rookies who are stepping up, showing out, making plays.
Starting point is 00:12:32 And that's what the Titans need because this is the beginning of a new era of Tennessee Titans football. And this rookie class, remember when they were drafted? We talked about this being a culture setting class. We talked about this laying the foundation of the Tennessee Titans' new era of football. So when you go to practice and the players that are making the biggest plays and that are really showing out are the rookies?
Starting point is 00:12:54 That is what you wanna hear. Xavier Restrepo. Xavier Restrepo was going to make this football team. I remember that there were people out there trying to downplay Xavier. Oh, why? He's no lock to make this team. I don't know why Titans fans are so excited for an undraft free agent who ran a 4-8. If you don't understand the context of Xavier Restrepo, he's not just an undrafted wide receiver
Starting point is 00:13:18 who ran a 4-8. Okay? He's not just another undrafted rookie running the mill wide receiver. There is obvious context here that has people more excited about Xavier Restrepo than we typically would be for an undrafted free agent wide receiver. So to ignore all of that to me is bad faith. But regardless, regardless, Xavier Restrepo doesn't care about the talk. He's just going to go out on the field and produce big X weapon X. Six catches, a team high on the day. Do you remember last week's OTAs? Who had the team high of catches that day? Xavier Restrepo
Starting point is 00:13:54 with three. So another practice, Xavier Restrepo, six catches, a team high. I saw someone say that he was everywhere. I saw somebody say that second and third pass of basically every quarterback ended up going to Xavier Restrepo. Every single quarterback, and look, he had six catches on the day. According to Jim Wyatt, four of those were from Cam Ward. There was an in-breaking route on a dig route. There was a quick slant route over the middle. Cam Ward throwing darts to his boy, Weapon X. Let's go. There was a quick slant route over the middle. Cam Ward throwing darts to his boy, Weapon X. Let's go. But there are other quarterbacks who are finding Xavier Restrepo,
Starting point is 00:14:30 who find him as a security blanket. And that to me, if he was just getting work with Cam Ward, it'd be like, oh, Cam Ward's going back. But the fact that other quarterbacks on this roster are identifying Xavier Restrepo as a guy that they can count on, a guy they can rely on, a guy they can rely on, and he is making every single catch that comes his way.
Starting point is 00:14:49 In traffic, doesn't matter, he's making the plays. This is exactly the player that everybody who was excited about Xavier Restrepo thought he could be. So the fact that every single practice, every practice, we keep going back to, oh, Xavier Restrepo, team high, Xavier Restrepo balling out. Xavier Restrepo making a name for himself. It's gonna be hard to keep Xavier Restrepo off this team. It just, every single practice. And I'm excited to continue to see that. Remember, this is day one.
Starting point is 00:15:17 The Titans are gonna have open practice tomorrow. They're gonna have open practice on Thursday. And I'm gonna be here to break it all down with you guys. But continuing forward, outside of Weapon X, Xavier Restrepo, Elec Io Manor, you know, maybe I should pump the brakes here, but I can't. Something about this guy gives me the feeling. It gives me the vibe. Like, something about it, it's gonna work. He fits perfectly with
Starting point is 00:15:47 what they want from the X receiver. You see people talking about who's at practice, hey, you know, watching a guy his size, you know, how smooth he runs routes, all that. Like I saw multiple people who were at practice saying, hey, I.O. Manor stands out to me every time I go to practice. He's my favorite player to watch. Buh, buh, buh, buh, buh. He caught a 50 yard bomb from Will Levis and shout out Will Levis, who went six for 10 on the day overall, according to Jim Wyatt, I believe, and had a 50 yard bomb to Ellic I amander.
Starting point is 00:16:23 And that's exactly what Iomaner can do. He can be that big physical guy, but he has the speed and he has the smooth route running ability to get downfield. And then you add in his contested catch ability to just, it gives you a skillset the Titans don't have. Iomaner had four catches on the deck. Caught passes from Levis, again, the 50 yard bomb
Starting point is 00:16:42 down the field. Caught passes from Ward,, again, the 50-yard bomb down the field. Caught passes from Ward. Like, it's the rookies. So, remember, when we're hearing, oh, all these catches, but who's leading the team in catches? Well, I saw Xavier Restrepo with six, Chicka Conqua with five, but then Io Manor with four, DK with three. Gunnar Helm had two. I'll talk about Helm here in a second. But like all of the guys
Starting point is 00:17:07 that are the guys catching the passes, making the plays are the rookies. And that's not just, hey, the rookies are the one catching the ball. Think logically about what depth chart position these rookies are in, where these guys are at, first team, second team, third team offense. Think about that sort of stuff. So if the rookies are the one making all the plays and making all these catches, they obviously are getting run with the guys who are throwing the most, which is Cam Ward and Will Levis, which is first team and second team. So clearly these rookie receiving options are getting opportunities with the first and second team already. Which is a great sign about what's to come. Chim Dike again, three catches.
Starting point is 00:17:55 His speed in the return game. Immediate impact. And then Gunner Helm. I put out a Gunner Helm film breakdown on the Tic Tac Titans film channel on Tuesday. Gotta go check that out. 25, 26 minutes of just pure Gunner Helm hype, man. You gotta check it out. But I saw Buck Rising say these other tight ends are gonna have a hard time holding back Gunner Helm. Now Chick got five catches. Gunner Helm had two, Chick Aconquo had a great day.
Starting point is 00:18:28 I know we're focusing on the rookies right now, but Chick Aconquo had a great day and he continues to get constant work because he's gonna be a weapon. And I think that there is a real world where Chick Aconquo has more yards and catches and touchdowns than Gunnar Helm. But Gunnar Helm plays the most snaps.
Starting point is 00:18:45 He's a more versatile player than Chigga Conquo. But I'm talking about it like a this versus that thing. The reality is the Titans need both of those guys. Chigga Conquo is a playmaker, a playmaker, and they need to get him more involved. He's capable of more. But I think that Gunnar Helm should be out there on the field just as much, if not more as well. Use them both. Chicka Conkwo is a versatile weapon. You can have both those guys out on the field.
Starting point is 00:19:14 When you run your traditional stuff, you can have Helm. Like, the possibilities are endless if Gunnar Helm turns into the player. I think that he can be. And Chicka Conkwo just stays the player that he is right now and is utilized better in a more healthy environment of an offense. Think about what the Chigga Conquo is one of the most successful tight ends in Tennessee Titans history already, and is going to pass a bunch of guys that you would know this season in yards like Jared Cook and Algie
Starting point is 00:19:41 Crumpler and John U. Smith. And. And he's done that in a terrible offensive environment. So the young pass catchers absolutely balling out like we hope to see in Chigga Conquo making some things happen as well. But let's go a little bit roll call. I'll tell you who was at practice, who worked on the side field, who returned, and one of the big names obviously is Jeffrey Simmons, and Simmons' presence has such an incredible impact on everyone around him. That's S-K-Y-L-I-G-H-T-C-A-L.com slash NFL. Titans fans, let's cap off today's edition of the locked on Titans podcast, breaking down day one of mandatory mini camp for the Tennessee Titans. Cam Ward goes absolutely crazy. We've talked about that a ton.
Starting point is 00:22:08 We talked about who he was throwing the ball to as well with the rookie receiving options, going absolutely crazy with him. But now I wanna do a little roll call update you guys on who was at practice, who wasn't, what's going on. And we gotta start with big Jeff being back out on the field and again, his presence is bigger than just a good player out on the field.
Starting point is 00:22:30 It's so much more important than that, which is why I'm so happy that Big Jeff not only came back for mandatory mini camp after skipping voluntary OTAs, which are voluntary, but that he was out on the field participating something that Brian Callahan hinted at before in his press conference. He said he'd be out on the field participating, something that Brian Callahan hinted at. Before in his press conference, he said he'd be out on the field. Didn't say quite how much with Jeff being a veteran and someone they can rely on, but
Starting point is 00:22:52 Jeff was out there making noise, making plays, got a sack on the day as well. Jeffrey Simmons is back in the building now. Before we dive in, do want to thank you again for making Locked on Titans your first listen each and every day remember Monday through Friday Tennessee Titans content all year round always for free you're not gonna beat that anywhere else there is nobody grinding out and pumping out the amount of Tennessee Titans content that I do and all of it is free but with that being said Jeffrey Simmons I talked yesterday about how he needs to be a leader. He needs to not only be there, but be out on the field,
Starting point is 00:23:28 make an impact on his teammates, lead by example, but also lead with his bravado. He is the best football player on the team. He has to be one of their best leaders. That's the way this works. Not everybody can be Kevin Durant and be a terrible leader who's a great player and win. Doesn't work like that unless you have greatness around you. And Jeffrey Simmons doesn't have the greatness around him right now to be laissez faire with leadership with the Tennessee Titans.
Starting point is 00:23:55 So the fact that he's back out there right now is fantastic. And not only that, but like I talked about, he's already barking at Cam Ward, talking trash, yelling across the line. Even when Jeffrey Simmons was off the field and not actively participating, he was barking at Cam Ward and barking at the offense and making noise. That is an alpha mentality that raises the confidence of everyone around you. And not just your defensive teammates, not just the guys on your side, that's going to make Cam Ward better. Jeffrey Simmons just being around and being an alpha dominant personality who's been an all-pro in the NFL multiple times, that is going to make Cam Ward better. And when Cam Ward is barking at Jeffrey Simmons,
Starting point is 00:24:44 and Jeffrey Simmons beats Dan Moore for a sack on Cam Ward better. And when Cam Ward is barking at Jeffrey Simmons and Jeffrey Simmons beats Dan Moore for a sack on Cam Ward. That happened. Jeffrey Simmons... Oh Dan Moore. Oh man. Don't make me right Dan Moore. Please don't prove me right. I would rather have people clowning me and dogging me and saying I was wrong about Dan Moore when I didn't like that signing, then Dan Moore proved me right. Don't do it, Dan. But Jeffrey Simmons beats Dan Moore for a sec, instantly starts talking trash. And what does Cam Ward do? Go right back at him. And how does Cam Ward respond? Oh, I'm bombing on you guys. 18 for 18, 14 for 14 and team. Talk all you want, Big Jeff. I'm balling over here. That back and forth, that battle of leaders, that test of will, that sign of alpha mentality, that is critical for this football team. We talk about leadership and look, it's, hey, I want to love my teammates. Hey,
Starting point is 00:25:38 you're my buddy. You're my pal. You know what leadership is? I'm scared to let down Big Jeff. You're my pal. You know what leadership is? I'm scared to let down Big Jeff. I don't want to get in trouble at school because I'm scared of Dad. I don't want to get in trouble because Mom will be mad at me, ground me, give me a whooping. Look, at the end of the day, there is an aspect of leadership that requires respect, bordering on fear, right?
Starting point is 00:26:05 Like that's a real thing. And guys should look at Jeffrey Simmons and be like, I can't mess up or Big Jeff will get on me. I can't mess up or Cam Ward's on me. Like Iomaner said in those press conferences at rookie mini camp, where he said, hey, if you're late, you're late. Cause Cam Ward ain't gonna be late.
Starting point is 00:26:21 All right. Seeing your two top dogs, your two generals, go at each other like that is high intensity and that is exactly what we need. So really, really happy that Big Jeff is back out on the field, not only to raise the level of play for the Tennessee Titans. He is the best player on the team, but also what his personality can mean he tightens he is the best player on the team, but also what his personality can mean for the rest of the team and Big Jeff lost 20 pounds from last year. He said he's down to 301 301 Everybody on the Titans getting skinny these days. Hey, I'm trying to come to all right
Starting point is 00:27:00 I'm trying to come with you guys on that Different story for a different day do want to mention Kevin Zeitler back out there with the team. He didn't do any teamwork in the 11 on 11 or seven on seven. Obviously, there's no offensive line seven on seven, but good to see Kevin Zeitler back out there. He talked about he wants to keep playing football. He thinks he could play at a high level. So Kevin Zeitler back out there with the team. Love hearing that even if he's not being rushed into teamwork. He's 35 years old guys. This ain't 28 year old Jeffrey Simmons who I want to see out on the field.
Starting point is 00:27:30 He's 35. All right, we can we can pump the brakes on Zeitler. No luxurious need out there. I'm telling you guys that the more we go along the more trouble I have seeing luxurious need bounce back for this team. In my mind, realistically in my mind, I kind of want to just move on, you know, I'm not saying they should cut him or trade him. I'm just saying in my mind, mentally, I don't want to, I don't want to talk about Ligerius Snead very much anymore. I just would, I don't think he's part of the future. I don't have high hopes. He'll turn it around.
Starting point is 00:28:00 I just kind of want to move on. So no Ligerius Snead. Lloyd Cushionberry out there with the team stretching, didn't participate in the other stuff, but coming back from an Achilles tear mid season, I love seeing any progress from, uh, Lloyd Cushionberry cause he's probably not going to be himself for a while. Even once he gets back out onto the field, uh,
Starting point is 00:28:23 Calo Mullings the seventh round or the sixth round running back out of the field. Cal O. Mullings, the seventh round, or the sixth round, running back out of Michigan, finally on the practice field. He had a core muscle injury coming out of Michigan that he was rehabbing, didn't participate in any of the practices up to this point, but he was back out there at practice. Now on the flip side, Kevin Winston coming back from the ACL,
Starting point is 00:28:40 the third round safety, he is not out on the field in rookie mini camp. They're probably going to bring him along slowly. I would be shocked if Winston is even out there for training camp right away. May bring him along even slower. And I'm fine with that. Tremendous talent from Kevin Winston. No need to rush him back when you have Xavier Woods and Mike Brown and Imani Hooker at safety. Otis Reese and Colton Dowell didn't practice. That's bad news for them. Those dudes are already fighting uphill to be who they want to be. Dowell to make this roster,
Starting point is 00:29:11 Otis Reese to be the starter. And when you have James Williams and you have Cedric Gray as drafted linebackers who are rotating next to Cody Barton right now, and you're missing opportunities because you're hurt. Look, it may not be his fault he's hurt, but life doesn't care whether it's fair or not. If you're Otis Reese, you are missing valuable time to be out there and prove that you should be the start. So not good there. Same thing with Colton Dowell.
Starting point is 00:29:39 You're fighting to make this roster after missing all of last year due to injury. Not good that you can't be out there. Those guys better be ready to go by training camp. fighting to make this roster after missing all of last year due to injury. Not good that you can't be out there. Those guys better be ready to go by training camp. Tyler Lockett didn't practice. He hit the jugs machine, which is the thing that shoots the football out to you so you can practice. And one thing that I hate, I hate to say it.
Starting point is 00:29:59 But Femi Oladejo did leave practice early, so hope he's back out on the field tomorrow. And it was just a precaution. Um, he's another guy who needs tremendous development. So anytime missed is a, is a big detriment to his ability to, to be helpful in year one, but with that being said again, back tomorrow to break down tomorrow's practice as well, we're racing to 20,000 subscribers.
