Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Cam Ward's ELITE WORK ETHIC Praised by Tennessee Titans Coaches & Teammates as Team Leaders Arise
Episode Date: June 4, 2025The Tennessee Titans drafted Cam Ward in the hopes he would not only lead them to victories, but that he would transform the culture of the team and he seems to be off to a fantastic start as stories ...of his insane work ethic and dedication begin to come out. Ward has been receiving praise in the media, from his coach Brian Callahan and his teammates like receiver Calvin Ridley. Ward can't be the only leader of the new school though, as players like JC Latham and T'Vondre Sweat look to step up and are showing leadership in the way they prepare for their sophomore season. Finally, a veteran in Cody Barton looks to take a leadership role in the center of the defense and Femi Oladejo looks to make an impact as well. But with that being said, Cam Ward continues to impress.
And it comes from multiple different sources as well.
Over the weekend, we heard from Jeremy Fowler of ESPN,
and he started telling the story, laying the groundwork.
Cam Ward's coming in five in the morning.
He's staying after practice. He's in the coach's office.
Jeremy Fowler from ESPN said, quote,
that the coaches have been really impressed with Cam Ward's work ethic.
They had to kick him out of the office
because he's been hanging around at night,
going over film, watching tape, going into the playbook.
He's been going into the coaches' offices
and trying to ask them questions about the offense and the playbook.
Literally, they had to kick him out
of the facility because Kam Ward's going so hard, he's so locked in right now
trying to learn, figure out what he needs to do, learn the playbook,
get on same page with his teammates, and that's all of the stuff
that was echoed by his coaches and his teammates.
I mean, Bo Hardigree, who is the Tennessee Titans quarterback coach.
He said that Cam Ward has been quote, everything we expected.
He's brought, he's bought in, he's working really hard every day, improving, taking the coaching.
He gets in, he works a lot on his own with his, um, which is impressive and the constraints that we have.
He works after practice.
He's just looking to improve every day.
That's what hard agree had to say.
Calvin Ridley chimed in as well.
He said, that's what you want out of your quarterback.
That's what you got to have out of your quarterback.
If he ain't one of the first people in here, what are we doing?
But that's great, like I said,
from day one that I met him,
I knew he was gonna be in the playbook,
here, and trying to get on top of it early.
So whether it be his number one wide receiver,
whether it be his quarterback coach, Bo Hardagree,
both of them are both saying,
yeah, everything we expected, he's working so hard.
We hear it from the media, they're reporting. Behind scenes. Coaches are super impressed with the work ethic. Like,
this is exactly what you want from your quarterback. Now, I've mentioned this yesterday
when we talked about practice yesterday. I mentioned it last week when we talked about
practice. These moments in June do not mean in Cam Ward's work ethic and I'm coming in at 5 a.m. and doing a...
That doesn't mean that they're going to win games. That doesn't mean that Cam Ward is, you know, going to do this, going to do that, going to accomplish this, not accomplish that.
You can't take away too much from June in terms of making bold proclamations, but you can check boxes.
And that's what I've been saying throughout the entire
all season, is I just want to see Cam Ward continue to check these boxes. I'm not going to say,
oh great practice in June, Cam Ward's gonna be a Hall of Famer. Oh, subpar practice in June,
Cam Ward's a bust. I'm not gonna make these bold proclamations, but I want to see him take the
steps. I want to see him check the boxes. I want to see Cam Ward, legendary work ethic. He's in here early.
He's busting his butt. He's 5 a.m.
He's watching tape with his fellow wide receivers and his tight ends.
They're having breakfast club sessions early on.
Like, does that guarantee anything?
No, it doesn't. But it's sure nice to hear.
And that's exactly what I want to hear.
But as for Cam Ward being in there at 5 a.m.,
Brian Callahan did give a word of caution though.
Brian Callahan said, quote,
everybody always starts out out of the gate pretty hot,
but you start to get into an actual routine.
You understand how long of a season it is,
the marathon that it is for
young players from the time that they finished the college season to the time
they finished the NFL season.
I'm not telling him what to do, just making the point that there is a lot
ahead of him that he's not aware of yet when it comes to the length and the
week to week grind.
It's a marathon, but I have no problem with guys trying to get the work in. So I like that Callahan is trying to at least give
some balance there to Cam Ward.
Like, hey, we love what you're doing,
but it's, you know, it's a long run.
Don't overdo yourself.
But quite honestly, I mean, my favorite athlete
of all time is Kobe Bryant.
And that shapes a lot of how I see sports
and what I want my players to be like.
And if Cam Ward is a maniacal competitor that he wants to get up while he's doing the Olympics
and do 3 a.m. workouts and stuff like Kobe Bryant did, I know it's not exactly the Olympics and stuff,
but you know the stories of Kobe Bryant doing those mid-morning workouts and stuff,
if Cam Ward wants to be that sort of maniacal, obsessive competitor,
quite frankly, I think that's what you need to be, to be that sort of maniacal obsessive competitor, quite frankly I think that's what you
need to be to be great. You don't want to be like Kirk Cousins where you take every Tuesday off
because you want to stay balanced. You know what I mean? Well, maybe that's why Kirk Cousins never
was an elite quarterback. Maybe that's why Kirk Cousins can't get it done in big moments because
he loves to take his Tuesdays off. I don't want my quarterback taking Tuesdays off. I want my quarterback in the film room at 5 a.m. every single day. That's what I want. That's what
I would do. That would be my plan. So quite frankly, I like that Brian Callahan is at least
trying to give some balance. But if Cam Ward wants to be in there every day at 5 a.m. because
that's how he wants to operate, that's what I want from Cam Ward as well.
But hey, Brian Callahan did talk about
how Cam Ward is improving actually on the field,
not just this leadership stuff.
I thought this was a good quote.
Callahan said, quote,
"'It's just the recognition part,
"'understanding what's being thrown at him
"'from a defensive perspective.
"'The protection game is always really important,
"'so we're getting reps
at that. Today is a big third down day, which I said yesterday on the show, so he will see lots
of different pressures. Understanding where your answers are, those things have progressed. Happy
with that process so far. He's seeing different types of space and field defense, throws maybe
he might have made in college that don't
show up in the NFL in the same way. He's learning from those. I think it's been
great. He's had a lot of learning that has occurred just from the act of doing
things that he's maybe used to doing that are different at this level. That's
always for young quarterbacks. The case, it's always going to feel different,
pleased with where he's at. He's picking it up pretty quickly as far as the mental part goes. We're learning every day. We are out there. I just
wanted to go play or say that quote because it's what I talked about yesterday. Literally,
have some patience. Let him grow. The recognition, he's learning his protections. What he said was
understanding where your answers are.
Those things have progressed and quite frankly knowing where to go with the football when you're
under pressure is something that quarterbacks struggled with last year for the Titans, one in
particular. So that's really what you want to see but whether it be the work ethic, whether it be
on the field progression, Cam Ward is exactly where we want him to be.
But he's not the only leader
that the Tennessee Titans need on this team.
And there are two guys going into year two
that really need to step up.
And it looks like they're on their way.

We talked about cam ward, all the work ethic stories that are coming out, whether it be Calvin Ridley,
Bella Hartigree, Brian Callahan, Jeremy Fowler in the media.
It doesn't matter.
Everybody's talking about this 5 a.m.
early morning stuff from Cam Ward.
And again, it doesn't mean that he's gonna be this
or he's gonna be that, but man, it is nice to hear.
But Cam Ward can't be the only leader on the team, okay?
Cam Ward isn't the only guy who's gonna have
leadership responsibilities moving into the new era of Tennessee Titans football. Something
that I said online recently, some people didn't necessarily like it, but I think it's a pretty
logical take. If you look at it, I don't think that the next version of a great Tennessee
Titans team, the next Tennessee Titans team that wins the division, the next Tennessee Titans team
that wins a playoff game.
I don't know if Jeffrey Simmons is a primary leader on that team. I don't know that Jeffrey Simmons is even on that team.
You know what I mean? It may be two, three years from now.
And you never know. You know what I mean?
So I think that it's much more important that some of these younger players,
especially with Jeffrey Simmons being away from the team, he doesn't want to be a leader.
He doesn't want to be there throughout the entire off season to bring guys along with him
and to not just lead by example, but to lead with his voice and vocally tell guys what to do
and mentor them and work out with them.
He doesn't want to do any of that stuff.
He wants to come in, get a paycheck, have good stats, and go home.
That's what Jeffrey Simmons wants to do.
Okay, great. You need players like that on the football team.
But that means that other players are going to have to step up and be true leaders.
And it would be better if it was some of the younger players on the team, including Tavondre Sweat.
Tavondre Sweat needs to be a leader on this football team, not only because of the skill level that he has in the player that he can be, but also because of his personality.
And one big thing that stood out to me about Tavondre Sweat and then the other second year player that I think needs to become a real leader for this football team, which is J.C JC Latham. The one thing that stood out to me about both of those guys is how they
have worked on their body.
So you look at Tavondre Sweat and some of these interviews, some of these
practice videos, this and that, blah, blah, blah.
I mean, Tavondre Sweat is still a monster.
Let, let's just, you know, be honest here.
He's six foot four, six foot five, 360 some pounds. But Devondre Sweat did say at practice that he did drop some weight.
He did say that. Like, he confirmed it. He said that he's lost some weight.
Now, he said, I feel great, you know, very excited going into my second year.
I feel a lot more comfortable playing very excited going into my second year.
I feel a lot more comfortable playing this game, especially my second year in the league.
I am ready.
It's going to be good, man.
But when asked exactly how much weight he's dropped, he did say ask coach Callahan.
Now I haven't heard or seen that Brian Callahan has confirmed how much weight,
but if you're Tevandre Sweat you're 360 pounds.
It's just like what JC Latham said. Latham said he played 360, 370 at times last year and you gotta think with Tevandre Sweat, he was rumored to be up at 380 at times in college. He looked like about
360, 370 last year as well. So if you could get Tevandre Sweat and JC Latham to drop 10, 15, 20 pounds,
Latham already has done that and confirmed it himself, which we'll talk about. But if you can
get both of these guys in the trenches, your year two players stepping up into leadership roles and
becoming your best players in these position groups and the guy, the other young, because think,
in these position groups and the guy, the other young, because think, again, the next great version of the Titans might have two or three more rookie classes added to the roster before it's time.
So like Tavondre Sweat may be a young player now in his second year, but three years from now,
he's going to be going into his fifth year, and he will be, it will be like,
oh yeah, Tavondre Sweat's one of the leaders here. You know what I mean?
So, when you have Tavondre Sweat, and you have J.C. Latham,
doing it better in year two, which should be the expectation.
I'm not saying that they've, you know, done something, reinvented the wheel here.
This is what should happen for rookies who finally get settled,
understand what they're supposed to do, understand their strengths and weaknesses at the next level,
have a full all season to not go to school, not go to classes,
not do combine training, not do pre-draft workouts and pro days and visits.
And when you can just be a professional football player, you should make a big step forward and
take a big jump as a player. That should happen. But the fact that Tavondre Sweat has dedicated
himself to being in great shape, he's been there with the team. Last week, we talked, oh, he wasn't at OTAs.
He was in the building. He was there. He just wasn't out on the practice field.
And he's been involved throughout this pre-draft process and these competitions and this field day style event
the Titans roster has been doing throughout the offseason.
He's been involved in that. He's one of the top guys on one of the teams. He's one of the co-captains.
So, I love seeing that Tevon Dre Sweat has taken a step forward. Brian Callahan even said, you know,
they have high expectations for him. He said, quote, he's a supremely talented person. There's
not a lot of people on the planet that can do what he does at his size. And it's more about the
consistency of performance. I'd like to see more from the pass rush game.
He's got the ability to rush for a man his size and that's a
point of emphasis for him is affecting the quarterback more.
He's a tremendous run defender that was a strength of his already
from last year. Part of it's going to be improving the detail
and then improving the ability to help affect the quarterback.
I think those are things
that we're looking for progression wise from him and he has the ability to be a
full three down player. He's not necessarily your explosive interior
pass rushers that are out there but he's got a great ability to push the pocket
too so looking for more from him and I think he had a solid start to his career
and I think there's a whole lot more meat on the bone for him.
So love seeing the Tevandre Sweat has gotten better shape.
Love seeing that he's been involved with the entire all season program and love
seeing the high expectations and the clear and defined improvement that the
coaching staff wants to see from him.
That's exactly what you do.
You tell him, Hey, this is what we expect from you. then you let the player go execute that so I love that and then of course
We've already heard
and talked about
JC Latham
Going into year two if you haven't seen pictures of JC Latham, you gotta look him up
He looks so different. And J.C. Latham talked
recently on the Bustin' with the Boys podcast with Taylor Luan and Will Compton. He even
said what I was talking about earlier. He played it like 360 last year. He got up to
370 at one point in time and he said he got embarrassed by the Houston Texans and the
back half of his season was a disaster because he was too heavy and he knows it and he needed to
be quicker and more agile and more explosive and that's exactly what he's done and if you
look at him I mean there is you don't need to be a carnival barker to be able to know
that J.C. Latham has lost quite a bit of weight. Now I think Latham said that he was about 340 and he wanted to get
down to about 330 something like that but going from 370 360 down to 330 that's a massive change
for a guy that big and to still be that and there was a video of JC Latham from practice like
exploding off the line of scrimmage during one of the blocking drills.
line of scrimmage during one of the blocking drills.
Whoa, moving at a totally different pace. So when you have guys like Tavondre Sweat and JC Latham
who are young enough to still be young players
but are also primed to be your leaders going forward
and they respond to this off season the way that they have,
that's excellent news for the Tennessee Titans.
It makes you so excited about the foundation when you have a guy like Cam Ward,
and then you have these year two guys, and then you have a guy like Femi Oladejo,
who we're going to talk about in a second, and then you have some other veteran leaders on the
team like a Lloyd Cushinberry, like a Jeffrey Simmons, I guess, like a Cody Barton. Now you have the ability to
have enough leadership in the room to kind of fix the culture, which is the number one thing that
the Titans have pointed out publicly themselves, like the coaching staff, the GM, they have all
talked about developing more leaders, developing a better culture. So clearly the Titans have put an emphasis on that.
And with that, you gotta have some of your best players
and some of your high draft picks, fill those roles.
And it sounds like Sweatt and Latham
are doing a great job with that.
But let's talk about some more leaders
like Cody Barton and Femi Oladizia.
Titans fans, let's cap off today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast. We're talking about leadership on this team, Cam Ward's work ethic, what we've seen from
the Titans two year two stars that need to step forward.
They're on their way to doing that.
But now I want to talk about somebody who hasn't got enough pop in Cody Barton,
but also give a little bit of an update on Femi Oladejo because Titans outside linebacker coach Ben Bloom had an incredible,
an incredible quote on Femi Oladejo.
So we're going to get to that.
But before we do, do wanna thank you again

But, Cody Barton.
Cody Barton had a mic'd up video that the Titans put out from him at practice.
And hearing Cody Barton interact with his teammates, hearing a mentor, David Benda,
the undrafted free agent linebacker out of Texas, just his energy, the way he's communicate,
he's talking crap to Cam Ward, like, woo, getting his face and him and Cam Ward,
Cam Ward's like, uh, uh, what do you mean?
You guys just gave up 35 points, you know, like they're chirping back and forth.
And to see a guy like Cody Barton, who was signed as a free agent, doesn't
necessarily mean that, you know, he's going to come in here and feel ownership
and want to be a leader.
He could just come in and get his paycheck, you know, just come in, do a job and go. But Cody Barton seems to
be truly invested in the football team, invested in the young players wanting
to not only do his job, but prepare people who may eventually take his job
and the young linebackers like his communication, the way he's willing to
interact and just his energy in general. Again, I think that Cody Barton will be a captain for this football team. Like,
I would not be shocked at all if Cody Barton is named a captain as soon as they do it. Not one of the rotating, like truly
a captain on the defense.
His, and you want that. The thing is that coming from your middle linebacker is so critical because linebackers all about communication.
You're communicating with the people behind you, you're communicating with your defensive line, you've got to be the quarterback of the defense, you have to read every play, you have to call out during plays, where things are going, run, pass, counter, all the different things that get communicated. Getting your guys lined up, getting the play called to your teammates,
not just the adjustments and everything,
but literally the base play call.
You have to be enthusiastic about communication
as a linebacker, especially as a Mike linebacker
who is going to be wearing the green dot most likely.
And I know that everybody likes to say
the green dot's overrated, but I disagree.
I think that the communication ability, the ability to get your guys lined up,
to communicate the play properly, did not have any miscommunications.
Like that is an important skill that I think is underrated, not overrated at
the NFL level.
So really excited about Cody Barton.
And again, you guys need to go check out that mic'd up video that the Titans put
out with Cody Barton and kind of get an idea of what I'm talking about but his enthusiasm,
his energy from dealing with veteran players all the way down to the youngest player on
the team like that is that is the kind of guy that you bring in in free agency.
That's the type of impact that you want to have on your football team and we could talk
about all these young guys being leaders and they need to be leaders. Like these young guys need to be the new school leaders no doubt
about it. Latham and Sweatt and Cam Ward and Femi Oladeja who we'll talk about in just
a second. But at the end of the day, you do need some well-placed veteran leaders in important
spots. Center, I think is a very important spot. Linebacker, I think is a very important
spot when you have guys at those spots and it's funny that the Titans got two guys from Denver
To come over and do that and then they're gonna play Denver week one
But regardless, I'm just really excited about what Cody Barton can be for this football team
I think they got a great value with Cody Barton as well
He really does bring a versatile skill set that can do all things on all three downs and you add in this
off-field mentorship element that he's bringing to the table, absolutely love that.
So Cody Barton is a guy who I was happy about the signing, it made sense,
he's not gotten a lot of pop,
but I think Cody Barton can have a major impact on this team,
not just on the field, but in the locker room and to the culture as well,
which is what the Titans need,
is they need veteran players
to come in and have a real impact in that way.
Do want to mention Femi Oladejo here,
because I think Femi needs to be a massive leader
for this team as well,
but the only way that you're ever going to truly become
the leader that you want to be and that we want Femi to be
is to prove it on the field.
And I thought Ben Bloom, the Titans outside linebacker coach, had just
an incredible couple of paragraphs.
Uh, he spoke with Tyron Davenport before practice.
They were doing all the coaches talk to all the media and blah, blah, blah.
But I saw a TD tweet this video directly, but Bloom said this about Femi Ola
Dejo quote Femi is a smart guy.
He's extremely hardworking.
He's very detailed.
I don't think the approach with him
is any different than any other players.
You put opportunities in front of them
to learn the techniques, get them the drill work
to work on their get off,
work on their hands in the move area,
teach them how to win edges,
teach them how to win with, teach them how to win
with power. That's through drill work this time of year. Then when we get to really rush in pads,
one-on-one in training camp, that growth and development accelerates. I'm excited to work
with him because he's got power and he's competitive and he's a quick learner. So I'm really confident in his ability to execute.
He got even more in depth.
Think like really soak in this comment
and how much Ben Bloom is teaching you
about the plan for his rushers in Femiolidasia.
Right here, quote, try to make things simple.
Are you getting off the ball?
How's your rush angle?
Are you attacking half a man in the pass rush?
Quick stop, half a man, think attacking edges of a player, your inside edge, your outside edge.
You want to attack the half of the defender, not right in the chest, attack one half of them
so you can beat them to an edge, but continuing the quote here.
In terms of pass rush moves, you've got to have some
power moves, one maybe two, gotta win on the edge. But we're talking a couple moves and
counters off of that, keeping a real tight menu. How's your get off? How's your rush
angle? What are the moves we're focusing on and then working on the moves, create momentum, counter momentum, keep it simple and keep
repeating the same stuff over and over and over and that's how you get the muscle memories
and keep it simple and repetitive.
He is literally telling you, we want Femi to blow off the line of scrimmage, speed off
the line of scrimmage, alright, we want him to get better with his hands. He needs one
or two power rush moves and then a couple of counters. So they want them to have one
or two moves with power, maybe one or two moves with speed, and then a counter off of
that and just keep it simple. Just do those over and over and over and over and over again.
And I think that is the best way to get the most out of family holidays.
You make it simple.
Let him use his physical gifts, his raw power, that explosiveness, his length.
Let him use his raw gifts in a simple way that he can master.
There are players in the NFL.
I know that this may sound crazy to some people to others.
It's not but
There are players in the NFL that literally have one move
Two moves now some guys have the full bag. They have the spin They have you know the dip and rip they have the cross chop. They have the long arm
They have the speed to power. They have the bull rush. They have the inside spin
They have the fake spin
like Demarcus Ware, they you know, they have ghost moves and then they have counters off those things
depending on how you rock your momentum this way or that way, but there are some guys
they just cross chop every time, dip move every time, every time, over and over, you know?
Like, if it works, it works.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
So I would love if Femi had every rush in the bag,
but if he could just get one or two moves down perfectly,
one power move, one speed move,
get off the line of scrimmage,
his just natural talent and ability.
And then that sort of development is going to mesh together and make him a
much quicker impact player than maybe I even thought, but so excited about those
detailed answers from Titans outside linebacker coach Ben Bloom, but that's
going to do it for me today.
Folks again, mail back tomorrow.
