Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - Carnell Tate & Anthony Hill MUST IMPRESS at Tennessee Titans Rookie Camp | Saleh's Biggest Questions
Episode Date: April 30, 2026The Tennessee Titans kickoff rookie mini-camp on Friday as the new additions get their first action and two rookies in particular need to make a strong impression. Carnell Tate and Anthony Hill are th...ose names. Tate is being asked to be a lead receiver in year one while Hill is being talked about as a guy who can wear the green dot in his first season. If that is going to be true for both, they need to hit the ground running. Similarly, on the offensive line, Pat Coogan needs to step up right away along with Fernando Carmona if Titans fans are to feel more comfortable with the state of the offensive line. Finally, Robert Saleh will likely speak at the event and there are some questions about these rookies that would be nice to get answers to. Tennessee Titans rookie minicamp is this weekend, and I think Carnell Tate and Anthony Hill need to get off to the fastest starts.
I'll explain why on today's edition of Locked on Titans.

with Tennessee Titans rookie mini camp going on this weekend.
It's Friday and Saturday.
I'm going to talk about the big questions that I would want to ask Robert Sala.
Also, we're going to talk about why my expectations for Kaldrick Falk are
low early on, and we'll talk about why I think Carnell Tate and Anthony Hill need to have the
fastest starts before I dive in.
I want to thank you for making Locked-on Titans, your first listen each and every day.
Remember Monday through Friday, Tennessee Titans content all year round, always for free.
Make sure that you get subscribed, stay subscribed.
It's your team every day.
Speaking of every day, shout out to my everydayers out there.
Tune in Monday through Friday.
Couldn't do it without you guys.
If you aren't an everydayer, you need to be one.
With that being said, though, again, Tennessee Titans rookie minicamp,
I think that Carnell Tate and Anthony Hill are the two guys who need to get off
to the fastest start for the Tennessee Titans, of course.
With the Tennessee Titans not being a great football team,
asking a lot from these rookies, not having great players in front of them.
The Titans need their rookies to get off to a faster start than certain other teams may need anyway.
That's already with the impact positions and roles that the Titans rookies are going to be at.
They're going to need production.
right away, but in particular,
Cornell Tate.
He's being asked to be a number one
wide receiver from day one for his football team.
That is a big ask
for a rookie wide receiver.
Not only are you asking a lot from
a rookie wide receiver to do that, but
everything that goes into that mentally.
What position
is he at? Is he learning
multiple positions? Something that we'll talk about
when I talk about the questions I would ask Robert
Salah this weekend when he does
media availability. But
having the ability to know the playbook, know the routes.
And in Brian Dable's Earhart Perkins system, the EP system,
which we're going to talk about a ton over the next few months
and into the season as we see exactly what Brian Dable does with the Titans.
But the system that he runs, all of the route concepts have names.
So a vertical on the outside and out route from the slot, that'll have a name.
double slants, that'll have a name.
All of the different route concepts,
whether it's three-man concepts, two-man concepts,
they all have different names and nicknames for what they are.
That's the way that the system works.
How quickly can Carnell take pick those up so that he can play in any spot?
How quickly can Carnell take pick all that up
so that they can use him as a match-up nightmare?
And they can use him outside as an X-wide receiver
if you have a smaller boundary press cornerback
at the Z position so we can get him in motion
and let him use his speed and his length and his stride
to get down the field vertically without the threat of press coverage.
In the slot, if you have a smaller slot cornerback
and the Titans want to take advantage of the length of size,
the contested ability matchup,
if the Titans want to do all those different things with Carnell Tate,
which is what is going to lead to Carnell Tate having maximum value
for the Titans in year one and being the Alpha number one wide receiver
that the Titans need him and are asking him to be,
for Carnell Tate to do all of that, he has to hit the mental aspect.
And for him to hit the mental aspect, you would hope that he's already in the playbook.
He's already studying.
He's already prepping to be ready for this rookie minicamp.
That's what you're hoping for.
All right.
So if anybody, anybody on this list needs to have a fast start to be able to do
what they need to do for the Titans this year,
it's the guy with the biggest ask of any rookie this year.
and in fairness, the number one pick that the Titans made.
A top five pick in the NFL draft.
You want Cornell Tate to come out and feel like he's a top five pick in the NFL
draft. He should be leaps and bounds ahead of any of the other
wide receivers that are going to be out there on the rookie tryout basis or, you know,
Tyron Montgomery and Rex Steiner and the other guy out of Louisville,
Beatty, Hank Beatty, you know what I mean?
Like Cornell Tate should be far in a way.
way better than all these other guys out there on the field.
And mentally, he needs to be ahead and get off to a good start
if he's going to be the player that we all hope that he will be in year one.
Now, the other guy that has to be mentioned here is Anthony Hill.
And it's for a similar reason.
It's the mental load that Anthony Hill will have to handle
if he is going to start day one for the titles.
If he is going to be the starter when the season begins,
then he's going to have to be ahead of the curb.
He's going to have to understand things.
He's going to have to move quicker in his development than other people.
And here's what.
What did the Titans say to us after Anthony Hill was drafted?
They said, oh, he was the Mike linebacker.
He wore the green dot.
We think that he has the communication skills to do that at the next level.
So you're going to ask a rookie linebacker.
to be the quarterback of the defense, to call the plays,
to name the adjustments, to get people lined up.
You want a rookie linebacker to slap Jeffrey Simmons on the hip
and make him get in his spot, to line up a defensive back,
to get the other linebackers in the right gap.
You want Anthony Hill to do that.
And a brand at the NFL level, which he's never been at before,
in a brand new defensive system, which he hasn't played in before,
in a totally different system at Texas.
You want him to be a leader,
command veterans,
know the playbook, know the adjustments,
learn a new system,
speed up to the NFL level.
If you want Anthony Hill to do all of that
so that he can be the starter immediately over Cody Barton,
then he better be ready to go this weekend.
Period.
Period. He has to.
right? I don't see a realm where we get the Anthony Hill came in unprepared.
And somehow by the time the season comes around, he has taken the spot from Cody Barton.
It would just be a bad sign.
So if we want Anthony Hill to be the vocal leader of the defense,
he better look like and sound like and feel like
he could be the vocal leader of the defense at rookie minicamp.
He should stand out among his fellow rookies as a leader.
And you can feel his presence.
Call it what it is.
Leadership isn't always something you can hear.
It isn't always something you can see.
Often it's something you can feel.
You can just feel who's in charge.
You can feel who people want to listen to.
So will Anthony Hill check that box?
Will Carnell Tate check that box?
That's what I'm looking at.
Those are the two guys by far.
that I think need to have the spotlight on them for rookie minicamp.
Now, you could also put the offensive linemen in there.
You could also say Pat Coogan, Fernando Carmona,
the Titans need a starter.
A lot of us have high hopes for these interior offensive linemen
despite fourth round, sixth round picks.
If you want Pat Coogan to start at center,
like we talked about with Anthony Hill, it's mental.
The center is going to call the checks at the line of scrimmage, slide the offensive line.
Shout out when there's a different defensive front and how they're going to block it differently.
The center is the heart and soul of the offensive line.
He is the communicative hub of the offensive line.
If you want Pat Coogan to take that spot as a rookie,
again, he better be in the playbook.
He better know some of the calls, know some of the cheques.
He better be doing all the work.
He better lead the offensive lineman while he's out there.
there. That needs to happen. That needs to be the case.
So if you want to put, you know, you can put Fernando Carmona into that group, but the reality
is my expectations for Fernando Carmona are just not as high as Pat Coogan. I'm not as
excited about Fernando Carmona as I am Pat Coogan. Maybe that proves to be dumb. Like the
D.K. We were all more excited for Elycaio Manor, even though he got picked after Chim Dek.
And who was the better player in year one? Jim Dek. So maybe the Titans
just got, there's a reason they pick Fernando Carmona over Pat Coogan because
Fernando Carmona is going to be a better player right away. Maybe that's the case and we're
all wrong when I'm just more excited for Pat Coogan. I want to see him take that step forward,
be that vocal leader on the offensive line. And there are a lot of young rookie
undrafted free agent in offensive linemen with Emil Wagner and, you know, the guy from
Louisville and some of the other options that the Titans have brought in, Fernando Carmona
as well, that group is big enough. They're going to need a leader. And I want to see Pat
Kugan establish himself. So
Cornel Tate, Anthony Hill, Pat Kugan,
that's who I'm looking for to get off to a fast start.
Let me know who you think needs to get off to a fast start
at Tennessee Titans rookie minicamp this weekend.
Now I want to talk about some of the guys who, you know,
I'm going to have a little more patience with at rookie minicamp
and some of these undrafted free agent options as well.
Do want to let you know that today's episode is brought to you by
Fan Dual Sportsbook.
The NBA playoffs are here in every possession

It adds another level of excitement to every game.
It's really easy to navigate the app as well.
It makes playoff basketball more engaging from start to finish.
The Lakers better close it out in game six.
I'm just saying things are getting spooky.
But with that being said, make sure you head to fandle.com to get started.
Fandle play your game.
And let's continue today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast.
Again, rookie minicamp this weekend for the Tennessee Titans.
We talked about Carnot Tate, Anthony Hill, Pat Coogan.
Also, I want to talk about the players who I'm not as big of a rush for.
I don't think they need to get off to a super quick start.
I'm going to try to have a lot of patience for certain players.
But before I tell you, thanks again for making Locked on Titans.
You're first listen each and every day.
We're going to be breaking down what happened at rookie minicamp.
on Sunday night after the weekend takes place.
We're going to look at the Titans' biggest remaining needs on the team right now
and free agent fits for those needs.
Next week, a lot of content coming your way.
OTA is happening, mandatory minicamp right around the corner.
Football, training camp right before you know it.
So make sure that you stay locked in with the Locked on Titans podcast.
But Keldrick Falk, I'm just not going to rush Keldrick Falk.
I am going to exercise patience with Keldrick Falk.
Falk. And there's a couple of different reasons why I feel that way.
Number one, him as a player.
Incredibly young, not good with his hands
and his hand technique and pass rush,
needs to learn to play lower in his pads
and anchor down and run defense.
He is going to,
not only him as a player, but his position,
interior defensive line, you have Jeffrey Simmons.
you have Solomon Thomas, you have John Franklin Myers, you have Jordan Elliott.
Like you have guys at the interior defensive line spot where if Keldrick Folk doesn't come out right away
and be a first round talent player, it's not going to kill the team.
Like if Cardinal Tate sucks, it's going to kill the team.
The offense is not going to be good enough to be any better than it was last year.
And it's just not going to be the improvement that we need.
if Anthony Hill sucks
Cody Barton has to play
be the starter all year
probably not good for the defense
he doesn't fit
you know like that is
those guys not being good
Cornell Tate is really in a tier on his own
but I would put Anthony Hill second
which is why we just talked about them needing to get off to a fast start
that's part of it too is Titans need them
but if Keldrick Falk
doesn't get off to the fastest start ever
if he's not great right away.
That doesn't hurt the Titans as bad.
Again, you have Simmons,
you have John Franklin Myers,
you have Thomas, you have Elliot,
you have depth on the interior defensive line
where a Falk isn't great right away
and he's just part of the rotation,
which he's going to be anyway.
I would imagine that Keldrick Falk's only going to get
20 to 30 snaps a game.
Robert Sala said he doesn't like his guys
to go over about 60% of snaps.
So they're going to be in a heavy rotation on the defensive line.
And I don't expect Keldrick Falk, you know.
He doesn't have to be a stud right away.
I hope he is, but he doesn't have to be.
And then at the edge, it would be nice to have him as an early-down edge rusher, of course.
But you have Femmy, you have Jermaine Johnson.
Those guys can play enough.
Jalen Herald popped a little bit last year.
I wouldn't mind him in a rotation.
Jacob Martin in a rotation.
You know, it's like they're good enough at those spots
or fine enough, we'll say good is a stretch of edge,
but they're fine enough to where they don't need Keldrick Folk immediately.
And with all he has to do, work on his hand technique, work on his pad level,
play different positions, learn inside, outside versatility,
do totally different things schematically than he was asked to do in college
because he was too gaping at Auburn.
and he's going to be on a one gap system with Robert Saleh here.
There's so much change for him and so much refinement needed
and so much depth at those positions that I just,
all of those things factored in together,
I can't be upset if Keldrick Falk takes his time.
Like it's just not something that's going to make me mad.
I am going to be the guy, just like I am with Femi,
I'm going to be the guy preaching patience.
And a lot of people disagree with me on this,
but I think the Titans are a team that can afford to have patience.
The Titans are a team that can afford to take some project guys.
The Titans are not a Super Bowl contender.
The Titans may make the playoffs,
but they aren't considered a playoff contender right now.
Teams that have to win right now are in their Super Bowl window,
are in their playoff contention window.
the Titans in 2021, the Titans in 2020.
Those were teams where you don't take a project.
You need to win right now.
Every single player that you add needs to contribute to winning right away.
Look, the Titans need to win.
I'm not saying that the Titans don't need to win.
But if the Titans go 6 and 11, 7 and 10, 8 and 9,
it's a great thing, not a disaster.
If you're a competitive team with playoff aspirations
and you go 6 and 11, 7 and 10, 8 and 9, and you don't make the playoffs.
You disappointed.
The Titans have the luxury of low expectations right now.
And with low expectations, you can be a little more patient.
And that's what they should be with Keldrick Falk.
Period.
Now, I think some other guys who the Titans need to be patient with,
Nick Singleton.
There's no need to rush Nick Singleton.
You have Tony Pollard, you have Tage Spears.
And the thing about Nick Singleton, like Keldrick Falk is,
the development needed how Nick Singleton needs to get better
to be the best version of himself for the Tennessee Titans.
He has to get better at reading his blocks.
He has to get better at reading the holes.
He has to get more patient with how he waits for his blocks to set up.
He runs into the back of his offensive linemen too often.
Have a bit more patience, a bit run with better tempo.
Understand your blocks better.
Understand we're trying to hit this hole.
And we need this guy to take this guy and this guy to take this guy.
And then that hole is going to open.
Especially in Brian Dable's multiple run scheme,
where you're going to have gap runs.
They require timing and patience and
counterstep here.
Let the tight end come through and kick out.
Let the guard come through.
and lead up through the hole.
Let the driving down block
from the offensive tackle clear
before you hit the hole too hard.
Brian Dable's run scheme has gap runs.
It also has zone runs.
And the zone runs are less of a problem.
He could just one cut,
get through, downhill, use his speed, go.
But the gap runs are going to take a little patience,
a little more IQ and awareness
from Nick Singleton.
He's got all the talent in the world,
the size, the speed,
speed, the dual threat ability.
He's got it all, but the mental aspect.
You can't just out athlete everybody in the NFL.
You've got to set your blocks up and be patient and wait for the creases
and see them before they actually happen, the vision.
He's got to improve in those areas.
And that may take time.
Now, it'll be worth the wait.
To me, it's like cooking something in the microwave versus cooking it in the slow
cooker. It's like grilling a
grilling a brisket
for smoking it. You know what I mean?
You grill a brisket, it'll be done
but probably won't be very good. It's a tough cut of meat.
But you smoke a brisket and you slow cook it
for 14, 12 hours.
It's worth the weight.
Boy, you can tell, I'm about to go
eat lunch after this. I am hungry. All right.
But nonetheless, or dinner
after this, I meant to say. But
let Nick Singleton slow cook.
you have Pollard, you have Spears,
you just need him to take five to ten
touches a game for right now,
work him in slowly, let him get comfortable,
let him learn the offense, and that starts
at rookie minicamp where there aren't a bunch of
other rookie running backs to take snaps away from him
like they're going to be in training camp with Tony Pollard
and Tage Spears. And if the Titans are smart,
they keep the wear and tear down on Tage Spears
and they give Nick Singleton a ton of carries
in training camp.
And let him take those reps and take those opportunities.
I would also tell you that Jackie Marshall
Jaron Kanick
you can't go slow with them
Jackie Marshall is a
convert from
edge to interior defensive line
needs to add a little bit more mass
doesn't have any pass rush technique
is just explosive gap penetrator
against the run he needs development
Jaron Kanik
was a high school
Wildcat quarterback into
a linebacker changed a tight end in his last year of college.
He doesn't know anything about playing the tight end position.
He is just an athlete who's going to play on special teams
who needs a ton of development to ever be a usable tight end in any way.
But I think Canick could be like a fullback type tight end.
It could be a utility player in that way,
which could make him a good tight end three, tight end four in the future.
But they're going to have to develop him.
He doesn't know how to run routes or the nuances
of reading coverage, and it's going to be a culture shock to him,
the Titans' offensive playbook.
Like, it's just going to be, so I am not asking the 225th pick in the NFL
draft who was a linebacker for most of college,
switching not only positions but sides of the ball,
not going to ask him to make a major impact right away.
So now, do want to mention the undrafted free agents,
Tyron Montgomery, the old wide receiver out of John.
John Carroll, Bishop Fitzgerald, the defensive back out of USC.
I think they could make an immediate impact right away.
Immediate impact.
Like they could be guys who, they may be undrafted free agents,
but Tyrone Montgomery and Bishop Fitzgerald were the stars of rookie mini-camp
over the weekend.
I can already hear it now.
So I'm keeping my eye on those guys.
But with that in mind, Robert Sala should be doing media appearance
at rookie minicamp.
and there are some questions and things that I would like to know,
and hopefully we get answers on.
Fans, let's cap off today's edition of the Locked-on Titans podcast.
Again, looking ahead to rookie minicamp that starts on Friday.
Carnell Tate, Anthony Hill, Pat Coogan, Fernando Carmona.
I think they need to get off to a fast start.
Caldric Falk, Nick Singleton, Jackie Marshall, Jaron Kanek,
not really worried about them getting off to too fast of a start.
They can take their time and be patient.
But with that in mind, what would I ask Robert Sala,
Before we go over those questions,
do want to thank you for making Locked on Titans

day or club. It's a small way to support me and support the show.
With that being said, though, again, what questions do I want to hear Robert Sala answer
about these rookies? Well, number one, what is Carnell Tate's role going to be?
And I'm sure that his answer will be, well, Carnell Tate's rule will depend on how quickly
Cornell Tate picks up the offense, which is what we talked about in the very first segment at the
very beginning of the show. That's why Carnell Tate needs to be ahead of the curve. He needs to start
quick, hit the ground running, whatever phrases that you want to go with, he needs to have a
good beginning to this rookie minicamp so that he has the capability of doing different things.
Because Carnell Tate, yes, he can be the Titans X wide receiver, but he's got the speed and the
vertical ability to go in motion and be a Z wide receiver.
He's got the ability to be a big slot wide receiver, which he did on multiple occasions at Ohio
State as well, using him in different matchups, in different roles based on the opponent.
is going, based on the situation during the game,
is going to be a critical part of extracting
max value out of Carnell Tate.
So what are your key measurements?
What are your KPIs?
You could say, where you want to see
Carnal Tate be to trust that he's capable of handling that his rookie year.
What are you looking to see out of Carnell Tate to prove that to you?
And with that in mind, staying on offense,
What do these rookie offensive linemen have to do to prove that they're ready to start?
How quickly are you hoping to see these rookies prove that they can start?
Do you worry at all about getting the offensive line starters as fast as possible so that they have time to gel?
How long do you want to drag the offensive line competition out until?
Do you, you know, are you worried that you won't have your offensive line starters settled
by the beginning of preseason.
Is there a finish line
where you're like, by this time
during training camp,
by this time the start of preseason,
by the start of the regular season,
by this time,
we want to have our offensive line in place
so that they can gain chemistry.
They can gel.
If you are Slater at Guard,
slotman at center,
volsen at guard,
Cougan at center, Cougan at center, Slater at guard, Cormona at guard, Cougar at center,
Cougan at center, you know, whatever combination you want to put together,
Cormona at guard and slotman at center, whatever combination you want to put together of right guard and center,
how quickly do you want to find those starters?
I think that might be one of the best questions that could possibly get asked.
I'm sorry that I'm not there to ask them, guys.
I don't want to move to Tennessee.
I've said this before.
I'm so happy where I'm at.
I love my house, love my family,
love everything going on for me right now.
I do not want to sell my house
and move to Nashville, Tennessee to work on the beat.
I turned that down in 2022.
I would turn that down even quicker right now.
I'm good where I'm at.
But I'm hoping one of the other fantastic beat reporters
for the Titans, like my guy, Teran Davenport,
or Nick Suss from Tennessee.
Another great reporter there, Jim Wyatt.
Maybe he could ask this question.
my guy Jim.
But I hope somebody asks
how quickly you want to see this offensive line
certify and what do you need to see from either of these two rookie linemen
and Pat Cougan or Fernando Carmona
to prove that they're ready.
Similarly, how can Anthony Hill
prove that he's ready for the green dot Mike linebacker spot?
What kind of marks do you want him to hit throughout the process?
How quickly do you want him to pick up the playbook
when should he know everything that he needs to know to be able to reasonably fill that spot?
I can't expect Anthony Hill to know everything as a rookie, especially, you know, in the middle of training camp.
He knows everything about the defense, every call, every check, everything.
But how much is it 75, 80%, 90% of what he could potentially learn?
How much does Anthony Hill need to know before you would trust him to be the green dot,
linebacker for this team.
What's that look like?
That would be a question that I would ask also.
The Titans talked a ton when Keldrick Folk was drafted
about, it was Robert Sala.
He could play on the outside, kick inside to pass rush.
Does that mean he's not going to get opportunities
to rush from the edge on passing downs?
They seem pretty forward
that he's going to play outside on early downs,
kick inside on passing downs.
again, does that mean that he can't rush from the edge?
You're not going to have him do that at all.
What's the development plan for his rush?
What moves do you want him to focus on?
What's going to be his path?
Because I watched Kellrick Falk's tape
and I hope you guys checked out the Caldric Falk film breakdown
that I put out on Tick-Tac Titans,
my Anthony Hill film breakdown came out on Thursday morning.
You guys are enjoying that, so thanks for checking that out.
Go do that.
If you're not, locked on Titans for the Convos,
Tick-Tac Titans for the film.
Smartest, most entertained Tennessee Titans fan
you could possibly be right there.
But I thought that Keldrick Folk had some pretty good speed
around the edge for a guy his size.
I don't think that he's a zero rushing off the edge
and the Titans need more edge rush help.
So I'd be curious to hear whether Robert Salab
truly means exclusively he's an inside rusher
or whether there's some wiggle room on that.
And then finally, what's the backfield, you know, pie chart usage going to be?
How much do you want Nick Singleton to be involved in the backfield?
You have Tony Pollard, Taj Spears.
You said before the draft Robert Sala, how much you love your running back room.
Okay.
So how much do you expect Nick Singleton?
How much did you guys want him to be involved?
I'm sure he'll say, well, it's about what he can do.
He's got to earn opportunities.
but, you know, we'd like for him to take, you know, 10, 15% of the carries if he's capable.
That's what I would ask.
So hopefully we get some answers to some of those questions.
Not all of them will be asked, of course, but be interested in what some of his answers are.
But I'm going to be here on Sunday night to break that all down.
Might even do a little bit on Friday.
Depends on what happened. Friday and Saturday are my off days.
So it depends how busy I am with everything.
It's lawn season, folks.
You've got to be out there fertilizing.
seeding, weed eating, planting, mulching.
It's that time.
So I'm just trying to fit everything together.
Y'all know how it goes.
Spring is here.
And with that, football is here.
So I'll be back at some point to break down
rookie minicamp and everything that took place.
Got a mailbag on the way for my Locked On Every Day or Club as well.
But with that being said, that's going to do it.
For me today, folks, as always, I am your host, Tyler Rowland.
And this was Locked on Titans.
