Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to the Locked on Titans podcast. I'm your host, Tyler Rowland. Titans fans, it's Crossover Wednesday. And we do have David from the Locked on Chargers podcast on the show to talk about the game with us. Before we get into our conversation with David, we are going to talk about why the quarterback competition is a very hot topic between Ryan Tannehill and Marcus Mariota. It may not matter because of this fatal flaw with the Titans offense. So after we talk about that, we will jump into my conversation with David in the first segment. I ask him some questions about the Chargers, get his take on how he thinks this Chargers
Starting point is 00:00:37 offense and defense will attack this Titans team. And then in our third segment, David asked me some questions about the Titans and I give him a little bit of insight as well. Love recording these shows. I know you guys like listening to them. Can't wait to get into all of it. Let's get it. Your Tennessee Titans lead story seems like it would be the quarterback competition between Ryan Tannehill and Marcus Mariota. However, it may not matter who wins the starting job if the Titans offensive line continues to perform like the least talented unit in the league. When Ryan Tannehill came in on Sunday, he was able to get the Titans offense moving a little bit more than it had throughout the first three and a half quarters. However, during that short time he was in the game, he was still sacked four times for a loss of 35 yards total. So at that point in time, although the offense looks healthier and is moving more,
Starting point is 00:01:40 the offensive line is still not giving the offense an opportunity to be consistent and sustain drives. Just a look inside how statistically futile this offensive line has been. And I do reference some of these stats in our conversation with David from Locked On Chargers to get his perspective. But the Titans have given up 22 negative runs, league lead. The Titans have given up 29 sacks, a league lead. The Titans have given up 47 quarterback hits, second in the NFL after a tie for first place. So statistically speaking, the eye test, the film, whichever way you want to look at it right now, the Titans offensive line is putrid and any quarterback
Starting point is 00:02:25 is not going to have an opportunity to succeed long term or win enough games to make this team competitive unless that offensive line is shored up. Now, one of the excuses that was used is the injury to Pamphil and playing Jameel Douglas and then having Nate Davis come in who's a rookie who hasn't played in a long time. And then another excuse was that Dennis Kelly had to play left tackle, so now Taylor LeJuan is back. He's still only played two games, so the chemistry and how to handle stunts and blitzes can be off. But none of that should matter now.
Starting point is 00:02:57 They've had enough time to play together. The reps have been there. We have Nate Davis plugged in at guard, which will be for a third straight week. Kevin Pamphil, if they feel he is going to be a replacement there, then he's going to be available to play this week after being able to practice. So either way, the excuses are starting to fly out the window. And with the amount of money that's been put into this offensive line, they are going to have to start giving the Titans offense some production
Starting point is 00:03:23 and giving these quarterbacks and running backs some time. Think about the run game. As I said, 22 negative runs, a league lead on the year. This running game is averaging 3.9 yards per carry right now. Derrick Henry has not been able to get anything going in the last few games. They only have four rushing touchdowns on the year, which is at the bottom of the league. This Titans offensive line is not doing their part. They're not holding up their end of the bargain, and it's going to be nearly impossible for
Starting point is 00:03:53 either quarterback to get things going regardless of who's better or how well they play if the offensive line doesn't give them an opportunity. The offensive line cannot be great. You look at a team like Seattle, you look at a team like Houston, who don't necessarily have the greatest offensive lines in the NFL, but they give their quarterback at least enough time to be able to make some plays. The Titans quarterbacks don't even necessarily have enough time to make plays out there with how porous the offensive line has been. Now Now let's move this forward into
Starting point is 00:04:25 a conversation about the Los Angeles Chargers. Right now their pass rush has been one of the bigger disappointments for their team. They only have 12 sacks right now, which is 10th worst in the league. Joey Bosa, vaunted pass rusher, only has three sacks. Melvin Ingram, who has been a force on the edge for a few years now for the Chargers, has missed a few games with a hamstring injury and has not been very productive when he's been out on the field. He is possibly expected to play this week, but he's only got one sack on the season, so he's been ineffective in his time.
Starting point is 00:04:59 We saw with the Broncos last week. They only had five sacks on the year. They were able to get seven sacks against the Titans and more than double their season total in one game alone. We saw the Titans give up, I believe, nine sacks to Jacksonville. They gave up five sacks to the Buffalo Bills. You cannot have these type of high sack number games and expect to compete in the NFL week to week. So will it matter who plays quarterback this week? We have to see if the offensive line improves to be able to answer that kind of question.
Starting point is 00:05:31 The Titans simply cannot allow the Chargers pass rush, who has not been productive this year, to find a way to get production against them. That's going to do it for our first segment. In our second segment, we're going to kick off Crossover Wednesday. We're going to have David from the Locked On Chargers podcast on. I'm going to ask him some questions. Of course, in our third segment, we'll do the reverse of that and he'll ask me some questions

Welcome to the Locked On Titans podcast. We are here for Crossover Wednesday with the host of Locked On Chargers, David. David, how are you doing tonight? Hey, I'm doing well, man. I mean, as well as you can be after watching a 2-4 football team get embarrassed on Sunday night football.
Starting point is 00:09:01 But alas, it is a new week and it's time to talk about Chargers and Titans. Yeah, I definitely do understand how you feel about having an embarrassing football team after we just got blanked by the Denver Broncos, so I know exactly how that goes. Unfortunately, the season is not going as planned for either of our teams, the Titans or the Chargers. One thing that is going well for the Chargers offense, at least, is their passing game. Right now, they're averaging about 288 yards, fourth best in the league. What is it about the run game that's only averaging 80 yards a game for 27th in the league that hasn't been able to match the vaunted passing offense of the Chargers?
Starting point is 00:09:41 So part of that is the offensive line. There's a lot of new faces and part of that's injuries, but also a big part of that is just game planning and not putting your running backs in the right position to succeed. I mean, in the first few weeks, Melvin Gordon was holding out and Austin Eckler was getting, and Justin Jackson were both getting, you know, the majority of the carries and they were doing really, really well, but that's because the play calling was suited to their strengths. They're good at getting out to the outside, making people miss, and breaking tackles. Austin Neckler's a small kind of diminutive guy, but he's very, very strong,
Starting point is 00:10:17 so he's a little deceptive in that nature. And then Melvin Gordon's come back, and he's just really rusty. He just doesn't have that same burst acceleration as we saw last year. But, hey, that's what happens when you don't play football for pretty much this entire year. So, I mean, it's a combination of a lot of things, but play calling, I think, is probably chief among them. So with the play calling, that's going to move right into my next question about the offense here. The Chargers are struggling in the red zone right now. They're 50% in the red zone. I believe it's a successful 10 of 20 times for 21st in the league. The red zone issues,
Starting point is 00:10:57 you mentioned the play calling. So do you think that the red zone play calling is what's holding this offense back? Or are there some other places of blame that you would say is keeping them from being able to score when they get their opportunities? Yeah, I mean, definitely play calling is a part of it, but also they're just making really dumb mistakes. I mean, throwing interceptions in the red zone, which is something you can never have or tolerate, or just, you know, like I said, the bad plays.
Starting point is 00:11:24 Like they had a play on the two-yard line where they do kind of like a fake jet sweep for Austin Eckler to go to the pylon, and the Broncos stopped it. And, you know, you waste opportunity to score there before half, and it was just a bad play. I would have much rather seen them, you know, run Melvin Gordon up the middle, the bigger, more physical back, after he had just had a, you know, six- or seven-yard run to get him in that position. But, yeah, no, also there hasn't been as many targets for Mike Williams, who is a big-body wide receiver, who is really built for the red zone. I mean, he can out-jump.
Starting point is 00:12:01 He can out-physical most corners. And also, you know, they have missed Hunter Henry, but he did make his return last night. Or not last night. He did make his return on Sunday night against the Steelers, and he had a great performance. A hundred yards and two touchdowns and also made his presence felt in the red zone. So that's going to help things definitely going forward. Yeah, absolutely. in the red zone. So that's going to help things definitely going forward.
Starting point is 00:12:24 Yeah, absolutely. Now, speaking of the turnovers in the red zone, obviously Phillip Rivers has had some turnovers. The team has had some fumbles. Right now, you guys have the seventh worst turnover margin at a minus four turnover margin. That kind of leads me into the defense. We know that the offense is having some turnovers, but it seems like the defense hasn't been able to produce a lot. Is that just because of the injuries to the defense we know that the the offense is having some turnovers but it seems like
Starting point is 00:12:45 the defense hasn't been able to produce a lot is that just because of the injuries to the talent there or what do you think's holding them back from being able to get some more turnovers on defense and even some more sacks right now even with those vaunted outside rushers and and bosa and ingram they only have 12 sacks that's 10th worst in the league so what's keeping the defense back from making those big explosive plays with turnovers and sacks well i mean part of that's injuries i mean they have just been decimated with major injuries one of those is you know derwin james who was their all pro safety from last year he's just an absolute monster absolutely all over the field he can rush the passer he can play in the box he can play center field he just did everything well and
Starting point is 00:13:24 their chargers obviously are sorely missing him. And then another kind of a jack-of-all-trades defensive back, Adrian Phillips, he also got hurt, and he's on IR. And so those are the two guys that, you know, just made a really, really big difference on this defense. Although they are expected to return, you never know when with those type of injuries. But it's just, you know, there's been no pass rush, I mean, at all. And part of that is because Melvin Ingram has been hurt,
Starting point is 00:13:50 but part of that is they just don't blitz enough. I mean, the Chargers play a lot of zone, and they like to try to get pressure with four, and it just doesn't always work. I mean, when they have been successful, they've been sending the corner blitz, having Desmond King rush off the edge, which he is very able and very capable of doing. And, you know, they've been running Bosa and Ingram on the same side when they're both in the game. But Ingram's been out. He has missed the
Starting point is 00:14:14 last two games because of a hamstring injury, although I do expect him to play on Sunday, which will obviously, you know, be a nice little jolt. But I'm sure you know a secondary's best friend and help in getting interceptions and turnovers is a really good pass rush. Pass rush, yep, every time. Absolutely. And right now, on paper, the Chargers have great pass rushers, but they're not getting it done on the field. Yeah, I understand how that works, actually, a little bit. Well, my next question
Starting point is 00:14:47 for you would be just specifically a question that happens to matter more against the Titans. As I'm sure you know and we'll talk about, the running game is going to be ever-present. It's going to be the most important thing the offense has to do, regardless of what happens at quarterback. But I noticed that the Chargers are, as good as their pass defense is, only allowing 201 yards per game. They're averaging about 120 rush yards per game allowed. Why are they so dominant against the pass but struggling against the run, which is actually something Titans fans will understand.
Starting point is 00:15:18 What's the difference there? Well, they're just not as stout in the middle of their defensive line. They just get pushed around, and the linebackers also just miss a lot of tackles. And when they have those one-on-one situations, you expect them to make plays. You expect them to be able to bring ball carriers down, and they have just drastically struggled in doing that. That's just been a really big common theme for the Chargers. And going up
Starting point is 00:15:46 against a bigger running back like Derrick Henry is kind of scary and I'm sure my if my other two hosts were listening to this they would say the exact same thing because bigger backs tend to have a lot of success against this you know kind of weaker you know not as stout you know Chargers defense but you know hopefully the Chargers defense can make some adjustments. They did start to employ one of their, you know, recent draft picks true tranquil into the linebacker mix, try to cycle Thomas Davis. Yeah. The 36 year old Thomas Davis off the field a little bit more, try to keep him a little more fresh, but you know, the, the bottom,
Starting point is 00:16:20 at the end of the day, it's all about the bad tackling. And that's, what's been just's what absolutely just has to get fixed. And if it doesn't, Derrick Henry's going to be running all day long. Yeah, I can understand why that would be a concern for you guys. One thing I did notice I was eventually going to ask about this good segue into it is, you're right, 57 missed tackles on the year per pro football reference. That's second worst in the league, so clearly that's a struggle. One thing I can tell you is Derek Henry, although he's big,
Starting point is 00:16:50 he doesn't break as many tackles and run as big as you would think he would. But speaking of that, I'd just like to ask this, not necessarily a prediction for the game score-wise, but how do you see the Chargers defense trying to attack this Titans offense? And quickly, how do you feel about the offense for the Chargers attack and the Titans defense which is actually pretty solid what do you expect to see yeah so on defense I mean looking looking back at your four losses that one of the big themes is just getting getting sacks I mean the for the opposing team you know they've given up four eight five and six That's 21 sacks in the four losses.
Starting point is 00:17:25 So obviously that's a recipe for success against the Titans. Whoever is trapping up and playing that quarterback, whether that be Marcus Mariota or Ryan Tannehill, I mean, obviously pass protection has been an issue for the Titans. So trying to get creative and really, really blitzing this team a lot more, I think, is what the recipe for success is for the Chargers defense. Yeah, I have a quick question for you about that. Sorry, but I did notice that, once again, per pro football reference,
Starting point is 00:17:54 the Chargers are only blitzing about 18% of the time. That's like fourth lowest in the league right now. So are you expecting them to ramp that up because that's what's working against the Titans? Absolutely. I mean mean they have to i mean it that's the only time they've really you know had success like i mentioned earlier using that corner blitz and you know really trying to you know confuse you know use some stunts but really trying to you know make people have to attack both and ingram on the same time and really try to protect against that attack. And that's really, really difficult. And it's going to be something I would expect to see multiple times on Sunday
Starting point is 00:18:32 for Chargers going up and trying to get some pressure against the quarterback. But on the offensive side for the Chargers, obviously you want to try to establish the running game, and it's really been tough. I mean, but they need to – the way to do that in this one is really to employ the screen game and kind of have an extension of that running game with the passes to the running backs. But also I'd like to see some more pitches in this game,
Starting point is 00:18:59 try to stretch those linebackers out and make them run. But also Hunter Henry, getting Hunter Henry involved heavily over the middle of the field to open up things for Keenan Allen. I think that's really going to be the game plan. They saw it work really well against the Steelers, and there's no reason why they shouldn't employ that again on Sunday versus the Titans. Absolutely. That does make sense. So Titans fans can obviously look out for that in our third segment. We're going to come back. David's going to ask me a few questions about the Titans, and we will talk about the game from that side of things. All right, everybody, we are back. David Droegemeier here, Locked On Chargers.
Starting point is 00:19:45 And, of course, we're joined with the Locked On Titans, Tyler Rowland. Boom. Yeah. Great. Good job. All righty. So, yeah, you took over the first segment, getting everybody all the information about the – I gave you all the information about the Chargers, and we're going to flip it over here and get some stuff about the Titans so you know you
Starting point is 00:20:09 guys actually started really well I mean after a pretty convincing win against the Browns you know in week one how did the Titans kind of get where they are at two and four well unfortunately and I hate using words like this that are so harsh, but the Browns win was a fluke. I was actually there in the stadium. It was really enjoyable, I have to say. It gives a nice star to the season because watching the Browns fans flood out of there so depressed after the hype train was just going off the rails was a great time, but unfortunately that performance was a tad bit fluky
Starting point is 00:20:41 because the Browns gave the Titans so much. They committed so many penalties, around like 180 yards of penalties. I believe it was past 15 in terms of the number. The Titans' offense was able to capitalize on a couple big, long screen passes. Marcus threw a 75-yard touchdown screen to Derrick Henry in that game. So with the penalties, the Titans were gifted, and the Browns' mental errors in the game, along with some lucky shot plays that the Titans were able to get,
Starting point is 00:21:09 it made it look like the Titans were a little bit better of an offense than they actually turned out to be, unfortunately. So that's what happened there. Gotcha. Well, hey, let's go ahead and go straight to the quarterback position because we obviously know that's the most important position on the football field. And there's kind of been some change there I mean Marcus Mariota got benched in this past game against the the Broncos and they brought in Ryan Tannehill who do you expect to play quarterback on Sunday and is Marcus Mariota on his way out of Tennessee well my predictions for the season
Starting point is 00:21:39 in terms at least for the games haven't been uh. So me, I'll probably get this wrong, but I don't see how at this point they would be able to go back to Marcus. He's had four years, four seasons prior to this, five games, six games into this year. And while there's a lot of blame to go around for the Titans with the play calling, the offensive line, the receivers, everyone has blood on their hands. That's a fact. But like you said, the quarterback position is the most important
Starting point is 00:22:10 position on the field. They are tasked with elevating the cast around them. And right now, Marcus is not only not doing that, he's not taking care of his business that he can control either. He's missing easy throws. he's inaccurate on wide open passes that you would see made in college you know I've put film out on my my twitter account at tic tac titans to break down some of these things everyone has blood on their hands like I said but he's not holding up his end of the bargain either and in the NFL oftentimes you need the quarterback to lift up the team and kind of make everyone else around them play better than they actually can. And in this circumstance, Marcus just isn't even doing that.
Starting point is 00:22:50 He's not even carrying his own weight. So I don't see how they could go back to him at this point. And I think that if they were going to go back to the starter and the franchise QB, in air quotes, they would have announced that already. They would have said, hey, it just wasn't his day. He just didn't have it. We knew it. We took him out, see if we could get anything going. They would have already said those kind of things, and they haven't.
Starting point is 00:23:11 So at this point in time, it's Tuesday evening. We're recording. They have not announced the starter yet. I believe they've told the team based on what Mike Vrabel, the head coach, has said yesterday. But at this point, you have to go with Tannehill. This offense is just absolutely futile. the head coach has said yesterday but at this point you have to go with Tannehill this offense is just absolutely futile they have to try something different this point and I think if
Starting point is 00:23:31 Marcus was going to start they would have announced it already so I'm pretty positive that Tannehill will play and in that circumstance the Titans offense is still similar enough because their skill sets are similar but I definitely do expect them to play a little bit differently because their strengths are just slightly different well there you have it charger fans uh we're expecting to see ryan tannahill on sunday i mean and you know you bring up a lot of good points that definitely suggest that as well but let's kind of move on to some of those weapons that the titans have that charger fans should know about? Who's going to be getting the majority of the touches on Sunday for the Titans' offense? Well, as I kind of mentioned in the previous segment,
Starting point is 00:24:14 the Titans' run game is always going to be the most important, so I'm sure the Chargers will have a game plan set to stop that. But if the Titans are going to win this game, I do believe that Adam Humphreys will have to get involved in the slot. The Chargers obviously have some talented players in the secondary, but with the injury to Derwin James, some of the struggles at linebacker you mentioned, a slot receiver like Adam Humphreys, who signed to a big contract in the offseason, he's going to have to come in and get some chemistry going with Ryan Tannehill and hopefully use Adam Humphreys, who's a great slot receiver and a route runner, to get some first downs.
Starting point is 00:24:50 It's something this team really struggles with is just getting some first downs and moving the ball down the field. So whenever you want to make it a focus to do things like that, you have to get the run game going to make sure you're ahead of the chains and you have convertible third downs to make. And then you have to use a guy who you paid money to be a chain mover, especially when the outside corners on the chargers are pretty decent players. Casey Hayward's one of the best in the league. So you have to, in that circumstance, use your inside receiver to beat linebackers,
Starting point is 00:25:20 beat safeties, and just move the chains. Adam Humphreys isn't a yak guy. He's not a yard after catch guy. He's not going to catch the ball, make moves, and get down the field. But he is a good, precise route runner. So the quick throws, because the Titans offensive line is obviously struggling, as you mentioned with the sack numbers. It'll be important for the quick passing game to work because, you know, the Chargers edge rushers and Ingram and Bosa are fantastic. So they're going to have to be able to get the ball out quickly.
Starting point is 00:25:47 And the only way to do that is to have routes run correctly. So I trust Adam Humphreys to run the routes correctly where A.J. Brown and Corey Davis not so much. So they're going to have to focus on getting Humphreys the ball over the middle against those linebackers, against those safeties, and finding a way to get the ball out quickly and pass the first down marker, not behind the line of scrimmage like we're seeing right now. Well, I was going to ask you what the plan of attack was, but you pretty much just answered it right there. So let's go ahead and switch over to the defensive side.
Starting point is 00:26:17 Who are the guys, the pass rushers and the secondary guys that Charger fans need to know about on Sunday? Harold Landry. If people haven't taken notice of him yet, which is probably the case because the Titans are not an exciting football team. They're not a nationally recognized and talked about football team. So of course, no one's gonna focus on that.
Starting point is 00:26:38 But Harold Landry has been phenomenal so far this year. He's tied for fourth in the league with seven tackles for loss. He has four sacks. He's the only fourth in the league with seven tackles for loss. He has four sacks. He's the only Titans defender that can be counted on to consistently put pressure on the quarterback and make the offense kind of think about where the pressure is coming from. Wherever we line up, Landry is usually going to be an area of focus. He's getting double teams and still finding ways to win. He's a talented young player in his second year. He was drafted in the second round due to some concerns about his health long term,
Starting point is 00:27:09 but he was viewed as a top five talent going into his senior year. So the Titans got a steal with him in the second round, and he's produced the way that they need him to produce. The front four is a pain point for the Titans. Good defense, or good defense, but the front four pass rush is a pain point for the Titans. Good defense, they're a good defense, but the front four pass rush is a pain point, and Harold Landry is the only bright spot for them in that area right now. So Harold Landry is definitely somebody that they need to pay attention to. Also, the Titans like to blitz their safeties and their corners,
Starting point is 00:27:37 so you've got to look out for Kenny Vaccaro and Logan Ryan, who are the Titans' slot corners, and Vaccaro plays strong safety, but he's down in the box all the time. Him and Logan Ryan will be in the slots. They're lined up as linebackers a lot, and they'll blitz quite often. So they have to look out for that if you're a Chargers fan or the Chargers offense. That'll be somewhere that they can get tripped up if they aren't sound with their protection schemes. All right, well, that leads me to the next question, actually, rather beautifully.
Starting point is 00:28:05 What do you think the game plan is going to be for the Titans' defense against the Chargers' offense? And also, what do you think is the biggest thing that the Titans are worried about that the Chargers can do offensively on Sunday? Well, I think the plan on defense for the titans is pretty clear they are going to have to blitz and disguise their coverages so they can force the chargers offense into making mistakes the offense doesn't run the ball well which means the titans defense can key on the passing game philip rivers is a hall of fame quarterback and although like matt ryan he is having some
Starting point is 00:28:44 struggles at the moment, they still at any moment in time can flip it on and go into Hall of Fame mode and beat you. So the Titans defense will have to focus on confusing Phillip Rivers, blitzing him with linebackers and cornerbacks and safeties to confuse the offense, confuse the offensive line, and turn that into turnovers to help this offense find a way to get some good field position and make some plays. I think the Titans, and you wanted to know what the Titans defense has to worry about about the Chargers offense, right? Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:17 What are they most worried about that the Chargers offense can bring on Sunday? I think that it's pretty simple, and it's that Phillip Rivers will be able to use these excellent wide receivers like Mike Williams and Keenan Allen, and they'll be able to hit shot plays. This Titans defense is solid drive-to-drive, play-to-play all the time. The only way that you're going to beat them, and typically so far this year, it's been a team ripping off a big run in the fourth quarter. Or like the Broncos got one long pass last week to Cortland Sutton, and it just felt like a backbreaker because of the way the Titans' offense plays. The Titans' defense will not be able to allow Phillip Rivers to get shot plays down the field and big plays down the field to his talented and big wide receivers,
Starting point is 00:29:58 at least in Mike Williams and then Keenan Allen in the slot. The Titans' defense can't allow chunk plays. They'll have to keep the ball in front of them. All right, yeah, well, so last but not least, what do you think is ultimately going to decide this one on Sunday? I think it'll be whether or not the Titans are able to run the ball. That's really what it comes down to. If the Titans run the ball well, then they are a 500 team. If they can't run the ball, then they're one of the worst teams in the league. So if the Chargers show up with a game plan ready to stop the Titans' run game and force them to be one-handed on offense and pass the ball, I believe that the Chargers' versatility and experience on offense will trump that.
Starting point is 00:30:36 So basically if the Chargers' defense can play good and stop the Titans' offense by stopping the run game, then it's going to be a battle between the Chargers' offense and the Titans' defense, and I think eventually in the run game, then it's going to be a battle between the Chargers offense and the Titans defense. And I think eventually in the NFL, the defense will break and give up 20 points to this Chargers offense. And if the Titans can't run the ball in offense, they won't be able to match. So that will be the key to everything is will the Chargers be able to stop the Titans run game?
Starting point is 00:30:58 Can the Titans get the run game going to help the offense? That's what the whole entire game will be centered around. Well, it's always a physical matchup whenever these two teams get together and strap it up and play a football game. So it's definitely going to be interesting.
