Starting point is 00:00:00 A third round pick for DeAndre Hopkins? If the Titans get the offer, they have to accept. I'll explain why on today's edition of the Locked On Titans podcast. Let's get it! Starting point is 00:01:09 We've got a lot to discuss on today's show. Number one, we're going to look at some trade ideas that were laid out by Pro Football Focus and decide whether the Titans should or should not make those trades. Also, we're at the bye week. I feel it's a good time
Starting point is 00:01:23 to look back. I want to take a look at Rand Carthon's first batch of free agent signings. I'm going to grade those, and I'll take a look at the rookies and the second-year players and give them a grade on their performance so far this season as well. Before we get into all of it, thank you guys for making the Locked on Titans podcast your
Starting point is 00:01:39 first listen each and every day. Remember Monday through Friday, Tennessee Titans content all year round, always for free. Make sure that you get subscribed. Starting point is 00:01:55 Shout out to my everydayers tuning in Monday through Friday. Couldn't do it without you guys. Tomorrow, got a great show for you. We're going to be doing a mailbag. So send your questions to me at tiktaktitans on Twitter. But with that being said, I want to talk about this article. And it was written by Brad Spielberger of Pro Football Focus. And it was 10 trade ideas that should happen before the trade deadline.
Starting point is 00:02:20 Three of them were titans. Okay. Now, some of them I like. Some of them I don't. Well, one of them were Titans. Okay? Now, some of them I like. Some of them I don't. Well, one of them I don't. But what I want to do here is go through those three trades, mock trades for the Titans, and just decide,
Starting point is 00:02:36 would I hit accept yes, or would I decline? And I want you guys to play along with me down below as well. So the first trade was DeAndre Hopkins to the Kansas City Chiefs for a 2024 third round pick. This one for me is an instant yes. The Titans have to make this trade
Starting point is 00:02:59 and specifically, if they lose to Atlanta. So the trade deadline is October 31st. That's two days after the Titans play the Falcons. If the Titans lose that game at home with presumably one of their young quarterbacks and drop to 2-5, they have to make this trade. I'm okay if they want to wait until the game against Atlanta, see if they win. If they go to make this trade. I'm okay if they want to wait
Starting point is 00:03:25 until the game against Atlanta. See if they win. If they go to 3-4, one of their young quarterbacks, Levis, Malik, whatever, looks good and leads them to victory, then hey, okay, I get it. You want to keep fighting.
Starting point is 00:03:38 You want to keep playing. You want to keep trying to win. Fine. I would understand it if Mike Vrabel logically told himself that. But at 2-5 it is time to sell, sell, sell. And if you could get a third round pick, the Titans have a first round pick, a second round
Starting point is 00:03:56 pick, a fourth round pick, and then three sevenths next year. With the shape that this roster is in that is disappointing to hear. So if you could get a top 100 pick from Kansas City for Hopkins, that would be an absolute deal. The Cardinals were trying to trade DeAndre Hopkins last season, during the offseason,
Starting point is 00:04:24 and couldn't get anywhere close to that. Now, a lot of that had to do with the financial situation of Hopkins, his contract, all that. Now, Hopkins got paid minimum salary this year. Most of the money was in signing bonus that the Titans gave him, like $8-9 million in signing bonus. So a team that is taking on DeAndre Hopkins won't have to take on more than a couple million
Starting point is 00:04:46 dollars in salary, which makes it possible. And with that, it makes it more likely the Titans could find a trade partner. Now, here's what I'll say. Some have said to me that the Titans signing Hopkins and then immediately trading him as a bad look for future free agents and stuff like, I think it's the opposite. Hopkins wants to win, at least that's what he said all along. So if the Titans aren't winning and they're going to prioritize the future, then do the veteran a favor and trade him somewhere where he can compete. That is the way that I would sell this and future free. Hey, sign with us. We want to win. We're serious about winning. If it doesn't go the way that we expect, though, we'll take care of you.
Starting point is 00:05:28 That is what I would sell with a trade of DeAndre Hopkins, and both parties would be satisfied. So I think you got to do it if you get a third-round pick. The next trade was Kevin Byard to the Philadelphia Eagles for a fifth-round pick in 2025. I would have to decline that. 2025 draft pick? Nope. I want draft picks right now.
Starting point is 00:05:51 Also, there is some PTSD of sending Kevin Bayard to Philadelphia. But I will say this. Bayard was born in Philadelphia. So if the Titans had to trade him anywhere, at least it's to an NFC team. At least it's to a team that has a real shot to win a Super Bowl because I would love to see Kevin Byard do that. And at least it's to the place where he was born.
Starting point is 00:06:12 I still wouldn't do it for a 2025 though. I'm going to need a 2024 pick to do that. And it better be a fourth or a fifth rounder. That's what I would say. If not, no reason to do it. The last trade is going to be a quick one. And of course, remember, let me know down below, guys, would you do these trades or not?
Starting point is 00:06:32 The last trade that was proposed was trading Christian Fulton to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a 2025 fifth round pick. You're telling me that you could get the same draft pick for Christian Fulton that you could get for Kevin Bayard? No way. One, you're not getting a fifth-round pick for Christian Fulton, but here's what I will say. If the Titans could do it, yes, yes, yes, immediately.
Starting point is 00:06:58 Fulton is leaving after the year. He's going to be a free agent. The Titans are not bringing him back. The writing's on the wall. Also, Mike Vrabel put in Trey Avery over Christian Fulton for a portion of the game on Sunday at the Ravens. They already are playing Trey Avery over Christian Fulton voluntarily at times. Why not do it and get a draft pick back?
Starting point is 00:07:17 If the Titans could get any draft capital whatsoever for Christian Fulton, they absolutely have to trade him. I've been saying that since the summer. But, yeah, of all those trades, yes to Hopkins, yes to Christian Fulton, but I'm not trading Bayard for a 2025 pick. Not a chance. I'll let something else happen and play something else out. But let me know how you guys feel about that down below.
Starting point is 00:07:42 I am going to grade Rand Carthon's first batch of free agent signings so far through six weeks and grade the performance of the rookies and the second-year players as well. We're going to get into that in just a moment. Before we do, I do want to let you guys know that today's episode is brought to you by Bird Dogs. You guys know I love my bird dogs the best shorts shirts pants hats joggers khakis polos
Starting point is 00:08:12 Whatever you want bird dogs has it and they have the best of it particularly I got to talk about the shorts and the joggers the shorts you guys know I've been saying to work out just to relax To swim I like to swim in my bird dogs They're incredibly comfortable, to swim. I like to swim in my bird dogs. They're incredibly comfortable to play sports in. I love golfing in my bird dogs. I wore them every single time I golfed all summer long. They have anti-stink sweat wicking fabric. They have a built-in inside liner. So you don't have to wear underwear. It's like wearing a, like compression shorts, basically underneath your shorts, but it's all built in with excellent fabric. I mean, it's like Lululemon for guys, but fits way better, okay? And it's getting colder.
Starting point is 00:08:51 It's turning into fall. It's turning into winter. A perfect time to break out the Bird Dogs joggers, which I have a couple pairs of and absolutely love as well. Make sure that you guys go to birddogs.com slash locked on NFL. Use the promo code locked on NFL at checkout for a free bird dogs water bottle with your order and the holiday season's coming around. You won't want to take your bird dogs off. I promise you. Titans fans, let's continue today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast. Talked about some trade ideas that we got from Pro Football Focus and whether the Titans should or should not do them. I said yes to two, no to one other.
Starting point is 00:09:58 Let me know how you guys feel about those trades down below. Now, I want to grade, and again, we're going to have some fun on today's show. It's interactive. I want to grade, and again, we're going to have some fun on today's show. It's interactive. I want to get you guys involved here. I want to grade Rand Carthon's first batch of free agent signings so far. I mean, we're a third of the way through the season, so obviously these could change dramatically. And I want to take a look at the young guys and the rookies,
Starting point is 00:10:19 so the second-year players and the rookies, and see how they're doing so far through six games of the season. Before I get into it, thank you guys again for making the Locked on Titans podcast your first listen each and every day. Tomorrow, mailbag. Send your mailbag questions to me at tiktaktitans on Twitter. Might as well follow me there for all my film stuff as well if you're not on Twitter regularly or X, whatever, you guys.

But, with that being said, like it's always the San Diego Chargers to me. Never be Los Angeles Chargers. I try to be professional but in my mind, I won't let it go. Starting point is 00:11:16 It'll be live here on the Locked on Titans YouTube channel. All the Locked on NFL YouTube channels. Check out Locked on NFL Live Kickoff. So put your grades down below as I go through each of these players. Let me know how you would grade these players and these things. So I'm looking at free agent signings first
Starting point is 00:11:34 and we are going to start with DeAndre Hopkins. And for me, this is an A-. Alright? For what the Titans paid, for their need. Alright? And Hopkins plays so far, 27 catches, 376 yards. With the disappointment of the Titans' sophomore pass catchers,
Starting point is 00:11:54 Hopkins has been absolutely essential. Where would the Titans be right now if not for DeAndre Hopkins? 1-5? 0-6? So, I know that the Titans aren't a good team, so arguing people's contributions seems a little weird, but come on, we got to be honest here. Hopkins has been good. Now, Hopkins isn't prime DeAndre Hopkins.
Starting point is 00:12:15 He's had a little trouble with press coverage at the line of scrimmage. His separation isn't really elite, which it's never really been something that he's been elite at with separation. He wins in other ways. But he's not elite DeAndre Hopkins. But he's definitely still a top 20, top 15 wide receiver in the NFL. So I give it an A-. Arden Key.
Starting point is 00:12:36 Arden Key is a tough one. Because, I mean, Arden Key had like 11 pressures in the first game of the year. And he's got 20 overall in the season. So the numbers look good, but if you look each week, Arden Key has been okay. Two and a half sacks, again, 20 pressures. Had a big first week.
Starting point is 00:12:57 It's slowed down a lot since then. Hasn't been great against the run either. Key just hasn't been, people were talking about Arden Key in training camp and in the preseason, like he was going to be like a dominant pass rusher for the Titans and had all these pass rush moves and this relentless energy. Well, now you're kind of seeing why Arden Key has succeeded as a rotation player the last two years.
Starting point is 00:13:23 When he's out there constantly on starter minutes, he starts to wane. He starts to wear down the effectiveness. You can't deploy him and correct opportunities and situations as well because he's out there all the time. So for that, I give Arden Key a B. The Titans right now as things look still desperately need a top-tier edge rusher. They have not been good enough on the edge this year.
Starting point is 00:13:45 And a lot of that has to do with Landry not being to form, not being back from the ACL properly. But a lot of that is Arden Key has not lived up to the preseason hype. He's been good, but not what people were talking about. So I give it a B. I give it a B. Again, let me know your grades down below. Aziz Alshair, I give it a C+. 31 tackles. He's got one sack. He's missed a lot of tackles. grades down below. Aziz Alshire, I give it a C+. 31
Starting point is 00:14:06 tackles. He's got one sack. He's missed a lot of tackles. The guy misses tackles a lot. Something that I notice. Again, this is to me just okay. The Titans don't have a top tier linebacker. I don't think the linebackers are the biggest problem
Starting point is 00:14:24 on the defense. not even close. They're last on the list, in my opinion, of biggest issues. That's just how I feel about the linebacker position in general, though. It's kind of like the running back position for me on defense. It's more about your D-line and your coverage than it is your linebacker play. But overall, Aziz has been okay. I give it a C+.
Starting point is 00:14:40 He's a run-of-the-mill starting linebacker, low-end starting linebacker in the NFL. For what he was supposed to do, it's solid. C+. These are college grades, not high school, public school grades. Keep that in mind if you think I'm being a little harsh on some of this stuff. Daniel Brunskill,
Starting point is 00:14:59 that's a B for me. Giving up two sacks, ten pressures. Been solid. Nobody's complained about Brunskill. You know, we're worried about Dillard and Aaron Brewer and even Chris Hubbard now, but nobody's worried about Brunskill. He's just solid. If Daniel Brunskill was your fifth best offensive lineman,
Starting point is 00:15:17 even your fourth best offensive lineman, pretty solid unit, right? Pretty solid. I mean, he's been like the second best Titans offensive lineman this year, and that is disappointing. But Brunskill is like a solid starting offensive lineman. It's how I feel about Aziz, basically. But, you know, it's just solid.
Starting point is 00:15:34 So I'll say B- for Brunskill. Just, you know, pretty good. Pretty solid. Chris Hubbard, I give that a flat B. He's starting to have his struggles. Titans try to help on the other side a little bit more and see if they can leave him alone. Three sacks, 14 pressures now. Chris Hubbard, everybody was freaking out at the beginning of the year.
Starting point is 00:15:58 He was playing well, but he was getting a lot of help. It's Chris Hubbard, okay? He's not a long-term answer. He's not a high-tier starter. He's not a high-tier starter. He's filling in, and the Titans are helping him a ton, and it's getting the job done on the right side. But with all that help over there, you can't help enough on the left,
Starting point is 00:16:13 and now there's a ton of problems over there. So let's not make it more than it is. I'll give that a B. And it was late in the season, too, and they made something out of it when NPF got suspended so that's why I bump it from the B minus Hubbard got or Brunsco got to the B Hubbard gets Chris Moore that's an A
Starting point is 00:16:32 I hate it on the signing that's my fault Moore has been a good depth wide receiver he's made big plays I mean Chris Moore's been better than Traylon Burks it hasn't been great either way but Chris Moore's made a lot of big plays for the Titans this year. You know?
Starting point is 00:16:48 It hasn't been a ton, but when he's needed, he's there. So I got to give Chris Moore an A. Trevon Wesko, a C+. He's gotten better the last few weeks, but it was a struggle early on, and he dropped that pass, and C+. He's the new Jeff Swaim. Is it a big difference?
Starting point is 00:17:08 I don't know. I'd rather see Wiley and Chig out there more anyways. Sean Murphy bunting. B+. Sean Murphy bunting might be the most underrated player on the team right now. He has been awesome. People think that it's this weird dynamic that your casual fan has of
Starting point is 00:17:28 if this guy's not a starter, he's a bum. No casual fan respects role players. They're a bum if they aren't a good starter. You know what I mean? Nobody respects it. Likewise, if you give up any catches, you
Starting point is 00:17:43 didn't play well. Oh, I saw Sean Murphy Bunting give up three catches. That's not that bad. You know what I mean? You're going to give up catches in the NFL. He's created turnovers. He's been really, while Fulton and Avery are getting targeted, it's been Sean Murphy Bunting holding it down.
Starting point is 00:17:59 So is he a lockdown number one corner, Revis Island, SMB Island? No. But he has been a very solid contributor. He's created turnovers. He's a long physical corner, and the Titans needed it. All right?
Starting point is 00:18:11 It's the Titans' existing players that are really letting them down on defense, not the new guys. So it's Landry. It's Fulton. You know what I mean? It's not the new guys. So B-plus for Sean Murphy bunting.
Starting point is 00:18:28 And then, of course, Andre Dillard. That is an F. An F. Seven sacks. 26 pressures. Fat F. Can we do F-minus? Because that's what I'm giving it.
Starting point is 00:18:42 No surprise there. Let me know your guys' grades down below. We are going to grade the rookies and the second year players and their performance so far this year as well. Titans fans, we are going to cap off today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast by giving grades to the rookies and the young players on the Titans and how they fared so far through six weeks. Before we get into it, thank you guys for making Locked on Titans your first listen each and every day, Monday through Friday. Tennessee Titans content all year round, always for free. Make sure you get subscribed, stay subscribed. I've been asking you guys to give your grades all throughout the show. Now I will ask you to throw a thumbs up on the
Starting point is 00:21:53 video as well. The show is always free. All I ask for in return is the press of a button, throw a thumbs up on the video and hit subscribe if you aren't subscribed. I put out shows every single day, man, like for free. Where are you going to get that? All right. Anyways, moving right along. We are going to give a grade to the rookies and the second year players for the Titans. The young guys. The guys that, let's be honest here, these are the only dudes that matter going forward because the Titans are going to have to get younger. They're going to turn it. I mean, the Titans turned over more than 50% of the roster. Most of the older players that the Titans have right now
Starting point is 00:22:31 will not be here next year. Bayard. Henry. Tannehill. Probably Hopkins. Fulton's not an older guy, but he's in his fourth year. He'll be gone. Danico Autry,
Starting point is 00:22:46 T.R. Tartt may be gone. You know? So let's take a look at these young guys in their two first years. Got to go through them quick because there's a lot. Let me know your grades down below. Traylon Burks, that's a D for me. Missed three games.
Starting point is 00:23:00 Only six catches for 99 yards. Even when Burks was in, he didn't make as big of an impact as he should have. Now, that's not all his fault. There are times where he was open early in the season, and he simply didn't get the ball. That did happen. But part of that is on him as well.
Starting point is 00:23:15 And he just cannot stay healthy. And at the end of the day, this guy was traded for A.J. Brown. It's been a disaster, man. That's a D. Anyways, moving right along. Roger McCreary, B+. McCreary has been very solid throughout the beginning of the year. It's not getting talked about.
Starting point is 00:23:39 He's given up some catches. Again, that doesn't make him terrible. This is the NFL. You're going to give up catches. Okay? It's like saying Ron Artest was a terrible defender because Kobe would give him buckets. You know what I mean? Come on, man. But Rodgers has been solid in the slot. Everybody's been talking about Fulton. Everybody's been talking about Trey Avery when he played. People aren't hating on Roger McCreary. Roger McCreary has been solid in the slot. Okay?
Starting point is 00:24:06 He's not the best slot guy in the whole league, but he's physical against the run. He comes in. He's willing to fit. He's willing to tackle. He's willing to blitz. He covers. Good slot corner.
Starting point is 00:24:18 B plus. Good for Roger McCreary. Nicholas Petit-Ferrer, F. You get suspended. You miss multiple games. You come in, you play worse than Andre Dillard, at least in pass protection. F. Jeez. He's putting the F in NPF. All right. Chigaconquo, I'm giving it a B-. 17 catches, 122 yards. Just hasn't been the explosive threat that we hoped he would be. He's basically on pace with last year in terms of catches and yards.
Starting point is 00:24:53 But again, like with Burks, it's not all completely on him. Chigaconquo's situation would look totally different if Tannehill hit those two passes to him for two touchdowns in the first game of the year. You know what I mean? That would be an extra 90 yards and two touchdowns. And we'd be talking different if Chick had 20 catches for 220 yards and two touchdowns. We would be like, oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:25:14 He's on pace. He's doing better. So not all on Chick. So I give him a B- there. Haskins, F. He's on IR. Phillips, D-, one catch six yards not the player a lot of people
Starting point is 00:25:28 talked about like he was can't punt return either finally though Jack Gibbons A A he's been awesome in his role as an early down linebacker awesome Titans got a real one in Jack Gibbons as an undrafted free agent from last year and then Ryan Stonehouse A
Starting point is 00:25:44 A plus I love Ryan Stonehouse, A, A+. I love Ryan Stonehouse. He's been great. To this year's draft class, Skowronski, B, only played in three games. When he's played, he's been solid. Really good second half against the Ravens. Really good second half from Skowronski. Had the appendectomy situation.
