Locked On Titans - Daily Podcast On The Tennessee Titans - DISASTER: Cam Ward HURT by Mike McCoy MALPRACTICE, Draft Pick Update & Mike Borgonzi Takes CONTROL
Episode Date: January 4, 2026The Tennessee Titans took a loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, but the worst part was the loss of Cam Ward to a shoulder injury. Ward being used on a design run for what feels like the first time all s...eason in the scenario he did feels like a final act of malpractice from Mike McCoy and his offensive staff. However, the weekend was mostly filled with good news for the Titans as their draft pick situation was finally secured and is in a great spot after the results of the early window in the Week 18 slate. Finally, the Titans released a major announcement on Friday that isn't really news, but serves as a public relations statement to ease the mind of concerned future coaching candidates. It reaffirms the power Mike Borgonzi has and demotes Chad Brinker back into an advisory role. This is good news for all Titans fans even if it isn't "new." Cam Ward got hurt and I think it's Mike McCoy Mao practice on the way out after we wrap up the game
We got to talk about the weekend that was because again the game was a disaster but I
think it was a good weekend for the Tennessee Titans.
They're getting some help with their draft pick
and Mike Borgonzi got clear control of the football operation.
So we'll talk about all of that before we dive into it.
I do want to thank you for making Locked on Titans your first listen

But with all that being said again, Cam Ward gets hurt, and that is the disaster moment.
That is the one thing I talked about on the show on Friday.
Healthy, healthy, healthy, no serious injuries.
And now look, Cam Ward has a shoulder injury on the opening drive.
What a great drive that was.
We'll talk about that in the moment.
But early indications, seeing early reports from different medical sources.
Paul Kajarski reported that early indications are,
It's not a serious injury, but I'll tell you this, seeing Cam Ward on the sideline in a sling,
that doesn't make you feel very good no matter what happens, no matter what the outcome is.
But early indications are Cam Ward will be fine, it doesn't look like it's going to be something serious.
But I'll tell you, you know what makes it serious or not in my mind?
Whether surgery is required.
I do not want Cam Ward to have to have a surgery no matter how minimal,
no matter how maximal, no matter how serious or non-invasive or whatever they want to call it,
whatever terms, I'm not a doctor.
As I say all the time, but no matter what happens under any circumstances,
I do not want Cam Ward to have to have surgery going into such a crucial offseason
where you're going to have a brand new head coach with a brand new playbook.
You're going to have a ton of new weapons.
The Titans are likely to sign some wide receivers, to draft some wide receivers.
Pieces have to be put into play, and this is a critical all season for Cam Ward to have a fool.
Last all season, remember how they talk about rookie all seasons.
You've got to prep for the draft and prep for the combine.
prep for the interviews.
It is not like getting ready to play football whatsoever.
So most of the all season for these rookies is spent doing that
and then Cam Ward went straight into rookie minicamp
and all the rest that they talked about
that he didn't take during the training camp time
and during the preseason, during the bi-week.
Like this guy is an absolute psychotic competitive junkie
and I love that but he got no break from his college season
into draft prep into the NFL season
to be a rookie starter in his first year.
Like that takes a toll on somebody
and I want Cam Ward to be fresh, healthy,
good to go as we go into a critical all season
where he can just focus on being an NFL player
and doing all the things that you have to do
and not on meetings and combine testing and measurements
and all of these different things that come along with
getting ready for the NFL draft.
Like he can finally settle in and have time
and not have everybody breathing down his back about being number one
like it's critical.
So the thing that differentiates whether this is a serious problem
that we just witnessed or whether it's
not is whether surgery is required or not.
If Cam Ward is going to heal with no surgery, this is not a big deal whatsoever.
But let me just say this.
Absolute malpractice by Mike McCoy and Bo Hardegree as well, who is calling the plays,
who deserves his blame for calling the actual play.
But the Titans didn't run a read option with Cam Ward on a third and shorter on the goal line.
They didn't run a veer option like we saw there where you can hand off inside or take a suite to the outside.
They haven't run a single design quarterback run like that.
The only time Cam Ward has run and it's looked like a design quarterback run
has been a busted RPO, which we literally saw earlier in the drive
where Cam Ward either hands it off to the running back or throws it out on the quick screen.
He chose to throw it out on the quick screen, but a defender got in the way and he couldn't throw it.
So he has two options right there.
Either he throws it to the ground where someone else is at so it's incomplete
and takes an intentional or an illegal man downfield penalty
because his linemen are blocking downfield because it's RPO timing
or he has to run it to avoid a penalty and gain some yards.
He did that earlier, got a couple yards, went down fine.
I don't think it was that.
It was a designed quarterback run and for them to pull that out.
In week 18, on the opening drive of a game
when the game isn't even on the line and in the balance yet,
on first down from six yards out,
you're not even on the one yard line on the goal line
where he can get in easily.
On first down where it's not even a money down
where you gotta have it.
You could just run Tony Pollard up the middle and be fine.
For the Tennessee Titans to run a design QB run with Cam Ward
for what feels like the first time all season.
In that moment, in an inconsequential game,
when you as Mike McCoy and Bowhart agree
know that you are out on your can tomorrow morning.
For them to, I mean, that is like,
that is like if you're a house sitter for a rich person
and you eat McDonald's off their China on the last night
before you've got to give up the house and give it back.
That's what just happened.
Mike McCoy ate a Big Mac on our family China
because he knew that he was leaving the house tomorrow.
That's what just happened to us.
It's despicable, it's disgraceful.
You can defend it as, oh, it's football, it's a football play.
No, I'm sorry.
I'm sorry calling that kind of play at this time
after what's happened all year.
That is malpracticed by Mike McCoy
And just another reminder for anybody
Who thought that he should be a serious candidate
For this long-term head coaching position
That you're insane
Just a Cam Ward is not
Lamar Jackson and Jalen Hertz
And Jackson Dart
He's not shouldn't be used on these plays like that
If you want to run like Tannahill
Tana Hill
Tana Hill used to run the read option
Right on the one yard line or third and one third and two
You want to do that? You want to do that perfectly fine
But people defending Mike McCoy saying
oh, it's just a football play
that's perfectly fine that they did that
blah blah blah blah like I'm just like no
I'm sorry I hate to be harsh and critical
but it was ridiculous
it was ridiculous so the fact that that happened
really made me angry
but whether Cam Ward has to have surgery
or not will be
what happens
now I think it's funny that both of the coaches
that had the reins this year
both of them gave a parting gift
to the Tennessee Titans
Brian Callahan gave the Titans the gift
of Brandon Allen, who was absolutely terrible
and ensured that the Tennessee Titans never scored another point.
The Titans were up 7 to nothing with Cam Ward.
They lost 41 to nothing with Brandon Allen.
So there you go.
Thank you, Brian Callahan.
This is why I wanted a bad backup quarterback.
If Cam Ward isn't in the game, why would we want to win?
And especially at this point in the season,
when you know the season is over.
If Cam Ward's out, they can lose by a million.
I don't care.
Especially with it being week 18.
I mean, give me a break.
So the fact that Brian Callahan left us
with his quarterback coach
in the locker room, in the quarterback room,
Brandon Allen to secure this draft position.
Thank you, Brian Callahan.
But on the other hand, Mike McCoy left us the piece of coal
that is getting Cam Ward hurt in the final game in the season.
So both of the Titans head coaches this year
left us with a little gift on week 18.
All right.
But again, early indications are,
early indications are that Cam Ward did not suffer a serious injury
but nonetheless that will be determined in my opinion by whether or not
he has to have surgery or not so we wait and see on the update on that
and confirmation on that and we may not get it anytime soon with the season being over
they have no reason to do that so we hope that an insider of some kind
or someone locally will give us a report on whether Cam Ward has to have surgery
this all season because if it's an AC sprain a joint sprain
something like that again I'm no doctor
but just NFL examples in the past
some guys have had to have surgery I think
you know again I don't want to
misremember but Will Levis
might have had surgery for something similar
to that so it's not out of the question
and that's my biggest fear
going forward now I do want to quickly say
that although the game was a disaster
Jeffrey Simmons again
a great player gets another sack
right off the rip and shout out Miles
Garrett who set the NFL sack record against the Bengals
even though we'll talk about that
the Bengals. Let us down, folks, like always. But anyways, I thought Simmons, James Williams
had some plays. They mixed him in with Cedric Gray. I thought James Williams played pretty well
in Chimdeka. Again, continues to look good. Alec Iommanner, some physical catches, and Jackson
Slater got to play. I can't wait to break down his tape over on the Tick Tac Titans film channel
and maybe we'll talk more about Jackson Slater later when we do a final year-end rookie review.
I got a lot of content playing for you guys coming up both here with the conversations on
locked on Titans and on the Ticktack Titans YouTube channel
with the film breakdowns.
But with that being said, again, the game was a disaster.
But the weekend, the weekend was pretty good for the Tennessee Titans
and that includes some of the help that they got with their draft pick position.

Titans fans, let's continue today's edition of the Locked on Titans podcast.
We talked about the game. It was a disaster. Mike McCoy malpractice, Cam Ward
hurt. Hopefully it isn't serious. It doesn't sound like it's
serious right now, but we'll see whether surgery is required, and that will tell me whether
it's serious or not. Moving forward, though, again, a disaster game, but a good weekend for the
Tennessee Titans. If you're a Tennessee Titans fan, you should be very excited right now about
what happened to the Titans this weekend outside of the game itself. That includes Mike Borgonzi
in the news that he is fully in control of the Titans football program. I'm going to talk about that
at the end of the show, but right now the Titans draft pick, and we're seeing it unfold a
As you guys know, I record the show live.

It's your team every day here on the Locked on Titans podcast.
But we're looking at all the games around the NFL and the Giants got a win.
The Dallas Cowboys helped out the Titans.
They pulled Dak Prescott and a lot of their starters.
And midway through that game, the Giants get a win.
And that moves the Giants up to four wins on the season.
And this is exactly what we hoped would happen when we talked a couple of weeks ago about the remaining schedule.
You had the Giants against the Raiders last week
The Giants are obviously a better team
They beat the Raiders
The Giants don't need a quarterback
So the Giants would be a team that would take a trade down
If the Raiders get the number one pick
They're just going to take a quarterback
I don't want another team up there
To get a big trade down package
And then there won't be as many teams
Who would be willing to give a trade up package
Like there's only going to be one at max
Maybe two if we're lucky teams
that are actually willing to package a bunch of picks and move up.
And one of those teams that would take a big package is the Giants.
So if the Giants are at number one,
then that means they'll probably trade back.
That ruins the Titans opportunity to get a good trade back for a potential quarterback.
So I'm happy that the Giants did this.
They beat the Raiders last week, and then they beat the Cowboys.
Like, this is great news for the Tennessee Titans.
Now, what remains?
The Raiders got two wins.
The Raiders are not going to win.
And even if they do, they'll be tied with the Titans for the number one overall pick.
So with strength of schedule and everything like that,
even if the Raiders win,
they're still going to get the number one overall picks.
So the Raiders are entrenched.
Who cares what happens with them against the Chiefs?
But after that, you have the Jets who have three wins.
But here's a big development.
The bills are literally sitting everyone.
They have all of their backups in.
They're inactive with some of their best players
like Joey Bosa, Dionne Dawkins, Christian Benford.
But they are not playing anybody.
So maybe the Jets in Buffalo get a big time win.
in. If that happens, that would be critical
and the Titans can move all the way up to the second
pick, but here's one of the issues
that we do have to worry about.
The Arizona Cardinals play the Los Angeles Rams.
The Rams are playing for seating and are going to play their starters.
The Cardinals right now are behind the Titans
and the draft pick situation because they have a
harder strength of schedule.
They have a 577 strength of schedule
and the Titans is at 576.
Well, some of the games that the Titans need to go their way
did not go their way. They needed the Browns to lose to the Cincinnati Bengals. That was a big time one
for the Titans and it went against them. So that's not going to help the strength of schedule right there.
Not only that, but they needed the Cowboys to win. They needed the Packers to win. They needed
the Falcons and the Falcons won. They need Miami. They need Miami to win. Miami plays New England
right now in the 4 o'clock window. But they needed three stars, two and a half stars at minimum
to secure a
weaker strength of schedule than the Cardinals
and make sure they're ahead of them in the order.
I don't think that that's going to happen.
Even if Miami wins, they're only going to have two stars
because the Packers, Cowboys, and Bengals all lost.
So that's going to be up in the balance.
There is a chance that the Giants move behind the Titans,
but the Cardinals move ahead of the Titans
and the Titans still sit at pick number four.
but the way things are looking right now,
the Tennessee Titans cannot have anything less
than the fourth overall pick.
We're looking at 2 through 4.
The Jets need to give the Titans a miracle.
And the Cardinals need to win?
Yeah, yeah, that's what it's looking like.
The Cardinals straight the schedule has dropped to 568.
The Titans is still at 576.
So if the Cardinals lose against the Rams,
the Cardinals are going to have a high.
higher pick than the Titans.
So right now, unless the Jets win and the Cardinals win,
the Titans will not pick number two.
So Jets win, Cardinals win, Titans pick number two.
Jets win, Cardinals lose.
Cardinals win, Jets lose the Titans pick number three.
If both of them lose, then the Tennessee Titans will pick number four.
So now it's all down to the Cardinals and the Jet.
who, again, are both playing in the 4 o'clock window.
You're listening in this on Monday morning.
You already know the results of those games.
But no matter what,
the Tennessee Titans are in a position to have a top four pick.
And that's critical.
And now, you know, we look at the draft,
and I talked about it on my episode on Friday.
There are basically eight players who I want,
I want the Tennessee Titans to leave the first round with one of those players,
whether it's them picking them sticking and picking,
or whether it's them trading back a little bit,
I want either Ruben Bain, R. Vell Reese, or David Bailey on the edge.
Jordan Tyson, Carnell Tate, or Mackay Lemon at wide receiver.
Jeremiah Love, Caleb Downs.
I might even reluctantly throw Sunny Stiles in there.
If the Titans traded down like to 10 or 11, I would not be angry if that happened.
It would have to be with all those other guys off the board.
So essentially, being in the top four,
if there are two quarterbacks,
like a Mendoza and a Dante Moore,
maybe the Titans don't get a trade for one of those guys.
But if those guys go off the board,
then you're getting one of Reese or Bain.
You're getting, you know,
one guy is going to go off the board.
And if it's the Cardinals,
and it goes, Raiders, jets,
and they take two quarterbacks,
and then the Cardinals are up,
I mean, they've taken Marvin Harrison Jr.
They have Trey McBride.
Would they take a wide receiver?
They could probably go edge rusher.
They need some other things in Arizona, though.
It would be interesting to see what they do there.
So I think that the Titans, no matter what,
based on what's happened with the Giants losing their game,
the Titans are in a great position
and there's still opportunities for things to get better.
I think the Jets might have a serious opportunity to win against the bills
based on what the bills have done, even though the bills are at home.
So, there are still things that could play out for the Titans.
They didn't get much help to stay above Arizona,
but they did get help from the Giants.
So that could leave them at minimum at number four.
And I think going into the week,
they could have dropped as far as number seven,
and that would have been a true disaster.
So the fact that they avoided that, that's great.
And then we moved to Sunday night football.
Where remember, if the Ravens win on Sunday night football against the Steelers,
if the Ravens win,
Titans fifth round pick they got for a Draymont Jones becomes a fourth round pick.
That's critical.
And again, the draft pick situation and the Titans having a good draft pick for sure now,
no matter what takes place, they're going to have a top four pick.
And I think that makes sure that they get a really good player in a really good situation
and can even take a trade down still, even if somebody wants to trade up for a specific position player.
And it's not a quarterback.
It doesn't always have to be.
We just saw Travis Hunter get drafted up for her.
knows what can happen.
But either way, the Titans are going to have a good draft pick,
early reports on Cam Warder that he's going to be fine,
and the Titans provided clarity for the fan base
and for potential head coaches coming up here in the future
with a statement they released on Friday,
and I think it's a very interesting statement.
It tells us a lot.
We're going to go over why this was also a very good part of the weekend
for the Tennessee Titans.

Titans fans, let's cap off today's edition of the Locked-on Titans podcast.
We talked about the game being a disaster with Cam Ward's injury and Mike McCoy's malpractice.
We talked about the Titans draft pick situation being in a pretty good spot and could get even better depending on what happens with the 4 o'clock games with the Jets and with the Raiders and the Cardinals.
well, the Raiders, they're locked in.
But either way, you know what I mean?
The draft pick could get even better
as the Titans sit at the number four pick right now
with the Giants winning the game.
But nonetheless, the weekend started good
for the Tennessee Titans.
As Friday, we got a Friday news dump.
And if you don't pay attention to media,
you aren't maybe used to these kind of terms and things.
A Friday afternoon is the best time to release
bad or controversial or less than ideal news or anything
because the weekend comes.
nobody really pays attention.
And by Monday, there's new news to talk about you.
It's kind of the news equivalent of sweeping the dirt under the rug
or like I used to do when I was a kid,
putting all my crap into my closet and closing the door.
That was a classic Tyler move when I was growing up.
But either way, the Titans dropped the press release
that basically says it's from Amy Adams' drunk
saying that Mike Borganzi is taking full control
over the Tennessee Titans football operation.
He owns the 53-man roster.
He's leading the head coaching search.
He is in control.
And instead of him reporting to Chad Brinker who reports to her,
now Brinker and Borganzi are equal.
And Borganzi and Brinker both individually report to Amy Adams Strunk.
Basically, it takes Chad Brinker from being Mike Borganzi's boss
and puts him as Mike Borganzi's co-worker instead.
And I think that that is great news.
Now, I said when it came out, I made a little video saying,
hey, this is news, but it's not new.
I mean, if you have been listening to my show,
and you're a Titans fan
who kind of pays attention
a little bit more
to all the ongoing stuff
and all the ins and outs
and you care about
some of the inner workings
behind the scenes
we've talked about this
I thought Mike Borgonzi
had had 53 man roster control
the entire time
that's something that we were told
early on
now you knew that
Chad Breaker was the vice president
or the president
of football operations
for the Tennessee Titans
so he was going to be involved
in the decisions
but I guess what the Titans
put out in this press release
that Mike Borgonzi
is full control
of all the football decisions and that Chad Brinker is now back in the role that he was in originally
when he was hired to work alongside Rand Carthon he is helping with salary cap and injury predictive stuff
and the analytics and doing field equipment and making sure that the injury staff is well stocked
and you know, Chad Brinker is doing some of these other more businessy aspects of the general
manager duty while providing data and analytics and analysis to Mike Borgonzi as information
Soundboard, that's what I thought they were all along, to be honest with you.
I just thought Chad Brinker was a liaison who can translate all of the ongoings to Amy
Adam Strunk. So quite frankly, this isn't really a deviation from what I thought
their role delineation was anyway. I didn't think that this was a difference from what we
already knew. But nonetheless, the reason that this is coming out and the reason that this
is being said publicly, even though it's something that could be sorted out behind closed
doors, you didn't need to do this publicly. The reason that they did do this publicly
was so that the potential head coaches that they're getting ready to interview know exactly
what's going on. Clearly there were questions or concerns from potential candidates about what
the actual hierarchy, what the actual structure is. So this is just an announcement. Hey, we're going
back to a traditional hierarchy and I think this tells us a couple of things. Number one, this
tells us that Mike Borgonzi has done the opposite of Rancarthon.
After one year in full control, the Titans are like, hey, this guy should be in charge.
He knows what he's doing.
And when we look at some of the signings, let's be honest, Dan Moore has worked out.
That worked out.
Dan Moore has been fine this year.
He has not been great, but he's been fine.
And I don't want to get into each individual move.
We don't have time for that, but the draft class as well has performed very well.
So I think with what Mike Borgonzi has showed us in year one,
it's like the opposite where, hey, we didn't make this massive mistake
and we got to get rid of this guy right away and move on.
It's the opposite of, hey, we did pick the right guy.
And I think while most people called Chad Brinker a snake
and he wanted to snake the power from Rancarthon
and he went behind Rancarthons back and was Jafar and Amy Adamsrunk ear
and used the swirly-eyed scepter, snake scepter on Amy Adam Strunk
to get power from Rancarthon,
I think in reality what we really see now after all the moves have played out
this is what happened.
Rancarthorn was a disaster.
It was a bad hire.
It was a big mistake by Amy Adams Strunk.
Chad Brinker didn't want the all-end B-N power all along.
He just was the only guy that Amy Adams-Trunk could trust after she messed up with Rancartan.
They hired Mike Borganzi who is worthy of that power.
And Chad Brinker said, hey, I don't want to be in control anymore.
I don't want all this power.
I never wanted to have all this power anyway.
I want to be a mad scientist on the side,
cooking up intellectual property algorithms about injury predictions
and salary cap management.
I want to be a tinkerer off on the side.
I don't want all the power.
I didn't want to snake this away from Rancarthorn.
He was just a bozo.
And I was the only person Amy Adams Strunk could trust.
And now that we have Mike Borgonzi, who is worthy of the power,
I'll give it back to the guy and go back to doing what I wanted to do all along.
I think that there were a lot of rumors
and a lot of opinions and a lot of conjecture
about what Mike Borgonzi and Chad Brinker
and their roles and their involvement and I think this kind of tells us the truth
Brinker didn't want that power all along anyway
he gave it back as soon as somebody worthy came along to take the mantle
he didn't want it so I think that we've learned a lot of truth this weekend
but again the most important part of this is this was a public relation statement
to potential head coaches of Mike Borgonzi
He is in control. He is hiring you. He has control of the roster.
He is your partner. He's who you're going to work with and Chad Brinker is a guy who's helping on the side in the process.
But Borganzi is the guy. There is no confusion. There's no uncertainty.
It's not clear as mud. It is crystal clear.
Mike Borganzi is in control. That's who's going to hire you.
That's who's your partner.
And making that definitive public statement is why this statement was made at all.
It did not need to be made but the fact that they made
made it was for that purpose.
So the fan base knows who's clearly in control,
and then that's who the head coach is.
More importantly, know who's clearly in control.
And folks, it is popping off already.
We got official reports, and I posted on all my socials
from East and Freeze at A to Z
that Mike McCarthy and Matt Nagy
will get a formal interview request from the Tennessee Titans.
I would imagine they both take it.
We will see.
But also, there are some names out there
like a Robert Sala, Jeff Hathley, Chris Shula,
who should and intend to get interview requests from the Tennessee Titans.
Some of the people that they're going to interview are going to be in the playoffs.
On tomorrow's show, we are going to go through all of the reported candidates
that have been tied to the Tennessee Titans.
There's like 11 or 12.
Right now I'm going to go through every single one of them and talk about all of them,
what stage I think they could be at for the Tennessee Titans,
the timeline for interviewing them, what it could look like.
going to do all of that on tomorrow's show
but again
this weekend
was a good weekend
for the Tennessee Titans
yes Cam Ward got hurt
again early reports are
it's not serious
hope he doesn't have to have surgery
if he doesn't have to have surgery
no harm no foul
no surgery
no problem
that's how I feel
with Cam Ward's situation
so maybe we get a report on that later
tonight on Sunday evening
that would be great I would love to hit my pillow
later tonight after recording Locked on NFL after the Sunday night game
check me out on Locked on NFL where I break down the entire NFL
for the number one sports podcast network in the entire world
holler at your boy but nonetheless
when I hit my pillow tonight
I want to know that Cam Moore doesn't have to have surgery on his shoulder
that's what I want to know I will wait for that confirmation
before I am no longer concerned so hopefully we get that soon
But nonetheless, outside of that, if that goes fine, which again, early reports are good,
the Titans draft pick is in a good spot.
They're going to get a really good player who can help this team.
Mike Morgonzi has clear control, the guy who we trust and want to pilot this ship.
And now all of the future head coaching candidates know that.
The coaching candidates interviews, requests are going out.
They're being communicated as legally as they possibly can.
This was a good weekend for the Titans in a weekend.
that you should feel very hopeful.
And I would add on to that
that when Cammore did play that one drive,
it was 7 to nothing.
He had a multiple good plays,
showed us that he can score on that kind of play
if he needs to,
even though I hate the call in the situation.
And not only that,
but all of the guys that the Titans want to draft,
Bain, Bailey.
Looking pretty dang good in the college football playoff.
So, very excited about the first.
