You are Locked On Titans, your daily Tennessee Titans podcast.
Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.
Welcome to the Locked On Titans podcast.
I am your host, Tyler Rowland.
Titans fans, I am very excited to dive into this Thursday edition of the Locked On Titans podcast.
It's something that I teased earlier in the week, but today is the payoff.
We have a big-time guest on the show today,
and they are going to help us get ready for the NFL draft
and specifically get ready for the Senior Bowl
that is taking place on Saturday.
And that guest is someone who has nearly 20 years
of high-level professional scouting
and pro personnel experience in all levels of professional football.
He has worked for the formerly known as Oakland Raiders, the San Francisco 49ers, the Miami Dolphins, the Carolina Panthers, and the New York Giants.
And that's just the NFL.
He also has experience with the Arizona Rattlers in the Arena Football League.
And most recently served as the director of
player personnel for the Canadian Football League's Edmonton football team.
So a well-respected, intelligent football mind, I am excited to bring on the owner and
founder of Maverick Sports Consulting, David Turner.
So David's going to come on the show today.
He's going to talk about the draft as a whole.
Is it deep? Is it narrow? Is it thin? Is it top heavy?
And then he's going to kind of get in some Titans specific information,
talk about positions of need that the Titans have and how those shape up in the draft this year.
And also throughout, mention some specific names that Titans fans should be paying attention to this Saturday at the Senior Bowl.
And speaking of the Senior Bowl, before we get into that interview with David, I want
to talk to you guys about John Robinson's affinity for the Senior Bowl.
We're going to talk about some quotes that he gave to Jim Wyatt while at this year's
Senior Bowl, and also take a look at his record with the Senior Bowl as well.
And we can get a lot from the comments that John Robinson gave us on Wednesday.
So we're going to dive into John Robinson's comments while at the Senior Bowl first, and
then get into that interview with David Turner, breaking down everything draft and Senior
Bowl from a Titans perspective.
I could not be more excited to get you guys into today's edition of the Locked on Titans
podcast.
But before we do, I know that in recent weeks, we have had a lot of new listeners to the

So we got John Robinson comments to get into an excellent interview with David Turner on
today's Locked on Titans podcast.
Let's get it.
We have not heard from General Manager John Robinson since the season ended, and while
it's not tradition for a General Manager to have an end of the season press
conference, there are some questions that I would like to hear asked to John Robinson
and some answers that I would like to have about his process from last year and about
the season as a whole.
But it doesn't look like we're going to get anything like that until maybe some coordinators
are hired.
If they're ever hired.
I'm skeptical of that at this moment in time with how long the process has gone.
But John Robinson did speak to Jim Wyatt of Titans Online earlier this week and gave some
quotes, and it's as much as we have gotten from John Robinson.
So I wanted to at least go through these quotes and discuss them with you guys
before we talk about some more draft related comments that John Robinson has made as well.
And first he said this quote, unless you win the whole thing, whenever that last game ends and you
don't win it, it's kind of like a car crash. It just stops. End quote. And you know, Robinson
is right on there. It does feel like that, and it felt like that to me as well.
It was very strange the next day when the season was just over.
But John Robinson talked about the importance of the senior bowl with Jim Wyatt as well,
and he had this to say, quote,
This may be our only face-to-face, one-on-one interview time with some of these players.
Being able to sit
down for 15 to 20 minutes with a prospect and try and get to know them as people, see if they're
going to be able to fit in our building, determining if they are going to be about what we're about,
that's important. Not to say you can't get some of your questions answered on a virtual call,
but there is something about the personal interaction that is beneficial, And it's a good opportunity to see them on the field.
The class at the Senior Bowl is a pretty good one too.
John Robinson also talked about the Titans' own free agents.
And he said, quote, we have several guys that are up contractually and we'll have to see
what the salary cap number comes in at or what it should be a week, 10 days before we
know that.
And then once you have that dollar number, you can make decisions on how you're going
to allocate your resources.
We have several guys up that have been really good players for us.
Janu, Corey, Jayon, Daquan has been a good player for us.
So we have some decisions to make at the end of the day.
We have to do what is best for the team.
And I told all the players that when I met with them at the end of the year.
Like I told Jack Conklin the year before, I told Jack, we are going to try man, but
at the end of the day, you've afforded yourself a chance to hit free agency and if another
team offers you something you can't refuse, that is going to be a decision you and your
family have to make and I wish you nothing but the best.
We'll have to see how some things transpire this year with some of these.
And then he moved forward and talked about the all-important question of adding edge
rushers to this team.
Quote, it's an important position, one that will try to continue to bolster and find guys
that can help the team.
I mean, end quote there.
That's not a lot, but hey, it's good enough.
And then finally, he said positions of strength in the 2021 NFL draft.
He said, quote, there's positions in this draft that I think are really strong,
and it's a unique year at corner.
I think there are some really long corners who can help
and can play at an NFL level.
I think the tackle position is a deep one.
I think there's some really good receivers in this draft.
He talked also about the 2020 draft being terrible.
Quote, every draft is critical to get
returns on those investments and historically we have been pretty good at that. Last year we would
have liked to had a better return on that one. We'll just keep turning over rocks and finding
guys in the senior bowl will be a good opportunity to get to see those guys live. So a couple of
thoughts here on those last few quotes. John Robinson basically told us which positions he likes in the draft.
He talked about the tackle position being deep.
He talked about cornerback.
He talked about wide receiver.
And if you think about quotes that John Robinson has given in the past,
it could tell us a lot about what he's thinking in this draft.
So here's a quote for you guys from the 2019 Senior Bowl. This is what Robinson said,
quote, much has been made about the defensive front seven. There's really good depth on the
front seven of the defense. I think there's good offensive linemen. It's a heavy tight end crop.
There's some pretty good backs in the draft. I think there's good value at receiver. There's
certainly some guys at the top, but I think maybe in the later rounds too, we already have kind of our sights set on, if you will, our earmarked as
guys who can help our football team. So that was before 2009. So what did John Robinson say? He
talked about the front seven, and then he went out and got Jeffrey Simmons and David Long. He talked
about the starting offensive line group, and then he went out and got Nate Davis. And you might have heard of A.J. Brown, the wide receiver that he took in the second round in 2019.
So he was talking up the wide receiver group.
Now obviously he mentioned tight end in there.
He mentioned running back in there.
And he didn't ultimately go after those positions.
But just a year later, he put a premium on running back and went and got a third round back in Darrington Evans.
Just a year later, he put a premium on running back and went and got a third round back in Darrington Evans.
So clearly, John Robinson, if you pay attention to his quotes,
especially about the Senior Bowl and at the Senior Bowl,
we can glean a little bit from what he might be thinking.
So talking about the offensive tackle group,
talking about wide receivers, talking about the secondary,
well, the wide receiver group and the secondary group
are clearly groups that the Titans need to be laser focused on.
And if they're planning on moving away from Isaiah Wilson this offseason, then the Titans
have to go right back into the tackle market and try to get somebody who can be groomed
behind Dennis Kelly and can step in if the Titans get in a bad spot like they got in
last season at offensive tackle.
So just wanted to bring that to your guys' attention before we dive into this fantastic
interview with David Turner from Maverick Sports Consulting. Again, like I said, 20 years of high
level NFL and professional football experience. Really excited to get his take on this draft,
the Senior Bowl, and who the Titans might be looking at. Gonna dive into that next,

We have David Turner, the owner and founder from Maverick Sports Consulting, a guy who's worked in the industry for two decades,
high-level professional scouting, has experience with pro personnel as well,
has been involved in football at every possible level you could think of.
NFL, Canadian Football League, a very decorated personnel guy
in the Arena Football League.
David, thank you so much for joining the Locked on Titans podcast.
First and foremost, how are you doing today?
I'm doing well, well rested, and I appreciate you bringing me on.
I'm fresh off taking care of some senior bowl of film,
and now I'm here to join you in this awesome opportunity.
So thanks very much.
Yeah, not a problem whatsoever.
Very appreciative to have you on today. And you kind of mentioned it, not a problem whatsoever. Very, very appreciative to
have you on today. And, and you kind of mentioned it. We want to talk draft today. Obviously you're
a personnel guy, a fantastic scout as well. So I wanted to ask some general draft questions.
First and foremost, just your opinion of this draft class, would you call it top heavy? Is it
a deep draft class, maybe thin draft class? How do you
kind of assess the overall group that's coming into the draft this year? You know, I think this,
this has certain positions. This draft has certain positions that are top heavy,
and then large gaps kind of open up in between the rounds. You know, as we're personnel guys,
we start setting our draft boards with the value of all the players.
And then we'll sit and we'll take it into, you know, dividing it by rounds and then by strengths.
And I think you're going to see certain positions, one being the quarterback position where it's top heavy and then it falls apart pretty quick.
And then you're going to see some late rounds, late rounds some fifth sixth seventh round type guys
but in the middle of the draft it's gonna be really hard to i think land a quarterback that
might rise out of the depths um all the but the now this year again receivers like last year i
think are going to be very deep very deep at receiver i think some linebacker especially
middle linebacker is top heavy and then it's going to fall apart and then
you'll you'll catch some guys in the fifth sixth round again that might make the team a special
teamers and our one trick ponies that can do some things but all in all it's it's going to be a
pretty solid class i think it's thinner because of the numbers and pandemic and things and you know
that that whole conversation is where we won't
go into today, but we can revisit at another time. But you know, it's a, I think this draft pool as
of players is a little thinner than it was in the past. So you're going to find a little more top
heavy, I think, and then it's going to thin out quick. Well, that makes a lot of sense. And
obviously from a Titans perspective, they have some pretty glaring needs in my opinion especially on the defensive side of the ball so they may have to attack those
positions early and speaking of those positions number one obviously uh you are an anti-edge guy
so i won't refer to it as that but the pass rushers that could be available in this draft
uh what do you think about the group itself?
Is the edge, or not the edge group, the pass rushing group as thin as maybe the rest of the draft is?
Or where do you think you might be able to find value
for a pass rusher in this draft?
So I think there's going to be some gems.
That's one group.
I think there are going to be some gems.
And a lot of defensive coordinators and position specific,
like with the Titans, they run a 34.
So you're going to have to get your linebacker crew,
your linebacker coach to work with your D-line coach
and your coordinator to really break down that front seven,
find out what they're doing, and find out traits
because they might be able to find some guys later.
I know early in the draft, guys like Gregory Russo
from Miami, Jolene Phillip from Miami, Kylee Payne from Michigan, Peyton Turner from Houston.
Those guys are going to go kind of early, and I think those guys are going to be premiums.
But I'll also say this. I mean, you get a little deeper into this, into Jason law from Penn state and Rashad
Weaver from pit.
Who's at the senior bowl.
Carlos Bosham from wake forest had a great day at senior bowl yesterday.
And Quincy Roche, another outside linebacker, I believe he's from Miami as well.
Yep.
And I forgot to say Patrick Payton Turner is also at the Senior Bowl.
So these are all guys that are at the Senior Bowl.
And some of the measurables that I found yesterday from these Senior Bowl guys,
I mean, if you look at that would fit the Titans,
there's this Turner kid from Houston.
He's 6'5", 270, 35-inch arms, 10 and a fourth hand.
That fits more of what they're looking for him and um
and um bm bosham from wake forest you know uh he who's six three one uh 281 32 inch arms and
nine and eighth hand both those guys can fit in there on their defensive line and generate pass rush from the defensive line.
And then you've got guys like Roche, who's 6'2", 243, 32-inch arms,
9 1⁄2, who can stand up and rush.
And then a Weaver, who might not actually fit their system.
He's more of a 43 defensive end, bodies type-wise.
But here's a kid that when I was watching his movement and stuff
yesterday he might be a guy you could play with a little bit he might be he might be that one
trick pony we were talking about that you know might lose trim down just a little bit and then
be able to fit in their outside linebacker rush and give them a kind of an amoeba uh type rusher
for them off the edge.
Well, that would be very important.
One thing that the Titans had been doing throughout last season is trying to be more multiple
than being just, you know, a 34 team.
And the Titans seem to utilize a guy like a Jadavion Clowney to try to be that outside
linebacker who can rush in a 3-4 formation, but also kick down and be a 4-3 defensive end
in that sort of four-man front alignment.
So those are definitely some interesting names
if they can find that amoeba guy.
They might be going after two different types of guys
on the defensive line to help pass rush.
But outside of the pass rushing,
which is clearly the biggest need for the Titans,
I do feel like there will be a heavy need
in the secondary,
specifically at cornerback.
What are your thoughts on the cornerback position this year?
Youth movement.
We got a youth movement in the secondary.
Very good youth movement, but ones that make me feel really old
because some of their fathers played for me.
Right, Sir Pan, Asante Samuel.
Yeah, I literally had Pat's son or pat senior at the miami dolphins
when i started my career in 2002 so it was like seeing this kid that i've known since he was like
a baby like literally a little kid now you know i've been in the business 18 19 years seeing him
blossom into the young man that he has at alabama's just amazing. But he's at the top of the class, you know, Pat Sertan, Caleb Farley out of Virginia Tech, JC Horn out of South Carolina,
Eric Stokes, obviously out of Georgia. You got Asante Samuel out, a junior, again, another guy.
Junior, yeah.
Yeah. Florida State. So you got to use a very big youth movement down there at corner, I think,
at the top of this draft class.
A couple that are at the Senior Bowl, though, for your listeners
to maybe tune into and pay attention.
The first couple days of practice, these guys stood out to me,
are DJ Daniels out of Georgia.
He's a 5'11 1⁄2 corner.
He weighs 183 and has 33-inch arms and 9'8 hand.
Very good first two days of practice.
Sound technique, good transition.
You could tell he's been working and doing his stuff in the offseason here already
to get ready for Senior Bowl.
And then another kid, a little shorter, but that never shied away from that
because I think this kid has Titan type character. You know, I know that's something J Rob really likes and, and, and the, and the people
there. So this is a Titan type character kid, Trey Brown out of Oklahoma. And now he's a five,
nine, almost just a hair under five, five, 10, one 88, a 30 inch arms, which is the low,
what we usually like for right deals,
and 9.5 hand.
But yesterday, he was running routes for the receivers.
First day of practice, and then today, he really knew what was coming.
He recognized it really smart and intelligently.
He was able to run routes for the receivers in one-on-ones and during team.
So this is a kid that, again, if you're watching Senior Bowl this week,
pay attention to.
Secondary also includes the safety position. I think that's a position that the Titans can
upgrade. And again, in this class, there's guys like Andre Sisco from Syracuse and Trevor
Morarney from TCU. Again, I've been known, my nickname is the butcher. I butcher names all the time. So forgive me and forgive your listeners. If they're like, Ooh, uh, just look at the TCU
and you'll know who I'm talking about. Um, at the, at, and so those are a couple of guys that,
you know, again, that could add to their secondary, help these youth movement and get
them going. But at the senior bowl, there's a Joshua Bledsoe, Missouri.
There's Tyler Gillespie, who is Missouri.
Both these guys are about 5'11", almost 6'0", right around 210 pounds.
Both of them have about 30 1⁄2 and 31 1⁄2 arm and almost 10 hands.
So these are guys with good measurables.
But if you want to talk a freak, a freak measurable guy, you know, you got to look
down, um, for the Florida state, uh, Hasha Razim deer. Is that even close? Uh, yeah, he's six foot
one and 216 pounds and you know, he's 31 inch arms. So he's just a guy that I think could be
a very rangy, aggressive safety from the back end
almost like uh the kid that came out of uh like a dryson james that came out of there a few years
ago he's not quite as big but he's very i think he has similar versatility um and then devin
debolo out of virginia tech who's 6'3", 226, can be your box safety,
big guy that comes flying in and have enough athleticism to cover some of the tight ends
and things that's in that division to help not only with pass defense,
but he's so big he can come play in the box and he can do run defense too.
Well, I definitely do think that safety is kind of an underrated, undervalued need
for the Titans by the fan base this year. Kenny Vaccaro is probably going to be out the door,
and I think the Titans need a big influx of speed at the safety position.
Hey guys, before we continue our interview with David Turner, just wanted to remind you about
our friends over at Built Bar. Remember we had a promo code running with Built Bar a long time ago
and you guys sold out their inventory and at the time it was just their 12 original
flavors, but now they're back better than ever with even more delicious flavors. They
got six brand new ones, Caramel Brownie, Cookies and Cream, Cherry Barsia, Lemon Almond Cheesecake,
caramel brownie, cookies and cream, cherry barcia, lemon almond cheesecake,
carrot cake, and apple almond crisp.
Best of all, the bars are still covered in 100% chocolate.
They're soft and easy to chew, and they're great for any health-conscious guy or girl.
They're low-calorie, low-sugar, high-protein, high-fiber, and even if you use the promo code before, you have a chance to take advantage of it again.
So go to BuiltBar.com right now and use the promo code LOCKEDON.
That's one word, LOCKEDON, and you'll get 20% off your next order.
Once again, use promo code LOCKEDON for 20% off at BuiltBar.com. the last uh position that i really want to ask you about here specifically is the wide receiver
position the titans might be parting ways with slot receiver adam humphries due to not being
able to stay on the field cory davis probably going to leave as a free agent. The wide receiver group has been incredibly impressive for a few years now.
You mentioned it a little bit earlier, but do you feel that this wide receiver class
is going to be just as impressive as the few classes that we've gotten in recent years?
I do.
And, you know, when I looked at the depth chart for you guys here at the Titans.
I really think you're right.
I think receiver is a position that they're going to need to address.
And here's a position that's, again, really top heavy
and something that's going to be – but there's going to be some gems.
There's definitely gems.
Like we've already seen Shai Smith out of South Carolina yesterday
at the Senior Bowl, 5'10", 186 type receiver.
First day of, you know, came out, looked really fantastic yesterday.
Today was a little more average day for him.
I think some of the DBs dialed into him a little bit.
Yesterday he caught him off guard.
But, I mean, again, top of the class.
I mean, you guys are picking, I want to say, somewhere around 21.
22, yep.
Yeah, you're 22.
So I don't think you'll see, like, the Jamar Chases
and the Devon Smiths and the Jalen Waddles.
But you might run into a Rondell Moore or a Trevon Grimes
or one of my favorite receivers, which is Tony Kedarious Tony yeah that's a big
one that I've been looking at for the Titans because he can add a little bit of a speed
element that they don't have on offense to take the top off but he can also work out of the slot
and help the Titans in that area separating in man coverage so that's definitely a name that's
been on my radar yeah and again when I looked at list, I think you need a little bit more height at your receivers.
You have great tight ends, which you got, you know,
Arthur Smith used really well and stuff, but I think you need more height.
So again, like a kid like Trevon Grimes, who's 6'3", almost 6'4", 217,
you know, a 9 and 5'8 hand, or a guy like Nick Collins,
who's at the Senior Bowl as well this week.
And, you know, Nick Collins will be 6'4", 215, 32 and a half arm
and nine and three-eighths hand.
Those are some big targets.
Desmond Fitzpatrick yesterday at Senior Bowl, you know, again, a 6'2", 202 kid.
I think he was out of Louisville.
And a 32-and-a-half-inch arm, 9.25. He might not be the fastest
guy, but yesterday at senior bowl, he had one of the best catches nobody's talking about,
where he really had to extend outside of his frame and pluck the ball. So he's a guy that
with that catch radius of 32.5-inch arms and already being six, two, that would be a very favorable thing for
Tannehill to go and, you know, maybe pick him up again. He's not a first rounder and he might not
even be a second rounder. This is a guy you can maybe get in the third round, maybe fourth round,
depending on where his speed falls and boom, you know, you got a gem. One thing I do want to say
though, is your middle linebacker position you know again you talk about
not generating pass rush but your middle linebacker position too is a position I think that you might
want to look at not so much um your your mic but your will position and you know there are guys
like Micah Parson and Aziz uh Azure might be gone but you know and a Nick Bolton might be gone but
Baron Browning you know he's a guy that I might be gone, but Baron Browning, you know,
he's a guy that I think you might want to really look into and think about. So to address some of
these problems and tackling and just stopping the run and generating some pass rush, you know,
he's at the senior bowl. He's 6'3", 247, 33 inch arm and 10 hands. So he's a guy that, again,
if you put him in the middle of this defensive line,
it could really help sew up some rush defense as well as help with his blitzing and stuff.
He can come in and maybe help. He's a big boy in the middle of that defense. It's somebody that you really want to think about because with all the depth at receiver and with all the depth
at certain positions, this is a guy who can definitely fall down to where you're drafting
either in the first or second round
because people will get caught up drafting these other positions.
Well, again, I would say from a Titans perspective,
it's similar to safety.
It's something that maybe the Titans fan base doesn't recognize immediately,
but Rashawn Evans has not lived up to a first-round draft slot.
It's just the reality of his performance.
He can't get off blocks.
He needs opening.
He can get downhill and penetrate, but he's not going to be a guy who sheds a block, gets
a couple offensive linemen and makes a play.
So that hasn't necessarily worked out as perfectly as we had hoped.
And then Jayon Brown, who's their other starting linebacker, he's another guy who's really
small, had struggles in run defense and is a free agent anyways and could be off the team next year. So that is a need that Titans
fans definitely need to pay attention to, and Baron Browning is a name that we will pay attention to.
That kind of leads me into the last thing I really wanted to ask you about here, David,
and thank you so much for your time. Just the senior bowl, actually I have one name though.
What are your thoughts on Patrickrick jones uh the defensive
lineman out of pit that's a name that i personally have kind of like he's maybe not as quick twitch
and a speedy off the edge but he kind of seems like maybe one of those guys who could be an
amoeba guy for the titans play inside and maybe a little bit outside too do you share that view
or what are your concerns about him so uh he's one that i haven't done a lot of tape work on. I'll be
really upfront with you, but I peeked at him yesterday when, when I was looking at the
defensive line, I haven't finished the tape work today. He's not someone who's popping off the
tape, but numbers wise and measurable wise, again, to me, he's six, four, he's two 60,
32 inch arm and 10 hand. So he's a guy with good measurables. I don't know if he's 6'4 he's 260 32 inch arm and 10 hand so he's a guy with good measurables I don't know if he's
I have to break him down before I get into it but I think he's gonna fit more of a 43
defensive end and from the athleticism I saw yesterday I would say that's better suited for
him you know because I don't know if he's going to be able to drop into zones and have that ability to do some stuff as an outside linebacker for for the titans um you know if
you're going to do the amoeba style guy like a j uh jpp you know or something he needs to be able
to have the athleticism to drop into coverage once in a while be a disruptor back there as well as
you know burst forward and and come and make a difference there.
So, you know, I just didn't see that yesterday, to be fair to the young man.
I got to do more tape on him.
But a guy like Carlos Bosham or whatever, like he was interesting in his ability
to do things, and Roche was very impressive yesterday.
So, you know, those guys stood out to me initially.
And maybe, hey, that's why Senior Bowl has more than one day.
You know, the guys knock off the rust.
Then the dust comes to settle.
And then we figure out who they are by, you know,
tomorrow's end of tomorrow's practice and in the game this weekend.
Yep, absolutely.
Well, that's fantastic.
David, I'm willing to let you go.
Thank you so much for stopping by. Do you have any other notes or names or anything from the Senior Bowl coming up this weekend that you would like to drop on us here before you head out? the opportunity to, with so many young people have missed proms and missed so much thing.
And now the combine is going virtual.
So these young men aren't going to be able to do this, but at least this was a step in
the, in the process that was able to hold and keep these guys in the, in the know for
everybody.
So if you guys, if your listeners, you want to get ahold of me, obviously you can get
ahold of me on any social media at Mav underscore sports at Mav underscore sports is how you get ahold of me on social media
or check out Maverick sports consulting.com and feel free to, uh, you know, sign up for
one of our packages.
Always glad to consult with young men and women, uh, on how to, you know, advance their
career here in sports.
Yeah, absolutely.
So I really appreciate it.
Obviously, uh, an incredibly savvy
and experienced football mind.
Thank you, David, so much for coming on
and helping us get more ready
and more prepared for the NFL draft
that is to come.
Hopefully we'll be able to talk to you
another time in the future.
Be happy to.
That would be great.
Thank you so much, David.
Well, I certainly hope that you guys
enjoyed that interview as much
as I enjoyed
recording it and having that conversation with David.
Obviously he is a wealth of NFL knowledge with a ton of experience to draw
off of.
And I would love to have him on in the future.
We have been discussing ways to get him a little bit more involved in our
draft coverage leading up to the draft and then analyzing the Titans picks
afterwards. So excited to dive into and then analyzing the Titans picks afterwards.
So excited to dive into more conversations with David in the future.
